LIFE + CULTURE CELEBRATE MOM IN STYLE
May is a time for celebration, especially of the women who inspire us, the mothers who nurture us, and the trailblazers who make Charlottesville shine. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to bring you our Ladies Issue, highlighting some of the incredible women shaping our community.
This month, we turn the spotlight on a Grammy Award-winning musician who got her start right here in Charlottesville, proving that our town is a launchpad for remarkable talent. We also had the pleasure of speaking with a renowned local female winemaker whose passion and expertise continue to elevate Virginia’s wine scene. If you’re in the market for a new home (or considering selling), a seasoned Charlottesville real estate expert shares her invaluable insights to help navigate today’s housing market. And, with Mother’s Day on the horizon, we’ve rounded up the best local spots to treat the special women in your life. Plus, we have a cocktail recipe from a female chef who’s been a part of the local scene and continues to provide her hospitality services through her own business -- it’s one that’s perfect for toasting any occasion, but especially Mother’s Day.
As always, we’re honored to bring you stories that celebrate our vibrant community and the people who make it extraordinary. We’re also grateful for our incredible partners -- the businesses, artisans, and entrepreneurs whose dedication and passion help make Charlottesville such a special place. We encourage you to support them, whether by visiting their shops, sharing their work, or simply spreading the word.
Here’s to the women who inspire us every day!

WHAT ARE THE TOP THREE THINGS BUYERS SHOULD PRIORITIZE WHEN TOURING POTENTIAL HOMES?
Location above anything. Architectural elements can be changed, but the location can’t. Be sure you love where your home is located: the surrounding area, the neighborhood, the commute to and from work and activities, etc. Can you truly afford it without working solely to afford your mortgage at the expense of your quality of life? I’d also prioritize a well-maintained home over one that has older systems but has had cosmetic updates. Cosmetics can be modified, but a home that has been well maintained will retain its value and be much less expensive over the
INSIDER TIPS FROM A LONGTIME LOCAL REAL ESTATE AGENT HELPING BUYERS AND SELLERS SUCCEED.
“AS A REAL ESTATE BROKER, I WANT MY CLIENTS TO FEEL LIKE THEY ARE INTIMATELY INVOLVED AND AWARE OF EVERY STEP IN THE PROCESS.”
years. And lastly, be flexible. I’d call it a win if a home had the majority of the ideal criteria. Rarely is a home truly perfect, so put the emphasis on the things that can’t be modified.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYERS TO HELP THEM MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS?
As a first-time homebuyer, I very much felt like I was flying blind. Now, as a real estate broker myself, I want my own clients to feel like they are intimately involved and aware of every step in the process. The more they understand, the more informed their decision. I guess my advice would be to educate themselves as much as possible with the help of their real estate professional so that they are prepared. Things move quickly when you locate the right property and being informed can help lessen any overwhelm.
I like to help people look past some of the more obvious elements, such as the floor plan or the yard, etc., to pay attention to how the home has been maintained. If a house has been updated inside, but shows lots of deferred maintenance outside or with respect to the systems, etc., there could be a lot of unexpected expenses that arise. Additionally, familiarizing oneself with the surrounding area can help immensely.
A home that has been properly prepared for the market makes all the difference. Taking the time to declutter inside, tackle small repairs, freshen up paint, and exterior landscaping, are the basics. Homes that paint the full picture win the attention of the largest pool of buyers, so more and more I am employing a stager to bring in some great furniture or art if the home is vacant or if a home needs a little re-imagining. And realistic pricing!
Grier Murphy
In 2005, after nearly eight years as a local restaurateur, Grier Murphy pivoted and began her career in real estate. “I was newly married to my architect-builder husband and searching for my next career path,” she said. “We were looking for a home to renovate and sell, and through that process, I became infatuated with homes and discovered that real estate was the perfect blend of my love of space and design and my desire to connect with people and understand what home meant to them.”
After 20 years as a Realtor in the area, Murphy remains passionate about her career and Charlottesville itself. “I have so much pride for this town and I feel so honored to share all it has to offer with people who are new to the area or are trying out a new part of town,” she said. “The access to nature, the award-winning restaurants, the vibrant and diverse community, the university… There is really something for everyone!”
FOR HOMEOWNERS THINKING OF SELLING IN THE FUTURE, WHAT ARE THE SMARTEST INVESTMENTS THEY CAN MAKE IN THEIR HOME?
Keep up with maintenance! It’s not all just cosmetic updates. Making sure the siding is in good repair, the systems are functioning well and are not on their last legs, the landscaping isn’t overgrown. A clean, bright, clutter-free, well-maintained home will always appeal to buyers.
HOW DO YOU HELP BUYERS NAVIGATE SUCH A COMPETITIVE MARKET?
I love to think about how to craft a strategic offer for my clients in an effort to put them in a strong position with a seller. This could involve much more than the purchase price. Having close relationships with my listing agent colleagues to learn what is important to their seller clients is the first place to start. Every transaction offers a unique set of circumstances and it is important to know what levers to pull to put your buyer ahead. Aside from the purchase price, elements like the home inspection, a seller rent back, or strong financing can be integral and each of those elements comes with a myriad of options on how to structure the offer. It’s like a puzzle sometimes and I love thinking about how to put that together for my clients in a creative way.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR MOST REWARDING OR MEMORABLE SALE, AND WHAT MADE IT SPECIAL?
My most rewarding sales are those with clients who have overcome the odds. I had a client a few years back who lost out on 7 homes before we found the one they would eventually buy. The market was crazy and it was so disheartening for buyers. These clients had an uphill battle on so many levels: a home they needed to sell, a very limited budget, some very specific parameters due to their family structure, etc. After months of looking and offers that went nowhere, we found the perfect home with the right seller and listing agent and we finally got them the house. It felt triumphant in the end and it bonded me with that family forever.

At just three years old, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, who grew up in Charlottesville, set her sights on becoming a fiddler. Not only did she achieve her goal, but she’s garnered some of the industry’s top awards. In 2021 and 2022, the dedicated musician was awarded Fiddle Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Then, in 2024, she won a Grammy for her work with Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway on the bluegrass album “City of Gold.”
Though she now lives in Nashville, Keith-Hynes began busking on the Downtown Mall at the age of 12 after her parents encouraged her to perform. “The first few times, I was very nervous and embarrassed, but once I did it and got the feedback, it was confidence-building,” she said. “I learned a lot about performance and playing for people, and the culture of busking.” She also fondly recalls playing at Fridays after Five and at jam sessions at both Miller’s and The Shebeen.
Keith-Hynes’ journey initially began with classical training on the violin, but her passion for fiddling became apparent, and she transitioned with an eye on Celtic fiddling. “I started out wanting to be a Celtic fiddler -- my whole dad’s side is from Ireland and immigrated during WWII,” she said. “We visited Ireland often, and there’s a great Irish music scene in Charlottesville, DC, and Baltimore.”
However, as a teenager, Keith-Hynes adjusted her focus to play the style of music that she does today, inspired by the bluegrass that she heard at fiddle camps she attended when she was 16 years old. “That’s the first time I heard bluegrass and was taken by it and taken by the bluesy element and the improvisation -- the vibe of it was how I wanted to express myself even more than Irish music.”
By the time Keith-Hynes was ready to move on to college, she knew that her goal was to make fiddling her career. She applied,
and was accepted, to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she went on to study bluegrass and immerse herself in Boston’s vibrant bluegrass scene. After graduation, she and four other musicians formed Mile Twelve, a modern string band that toured for seven years throughout the United States, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
It was in 2021 that Molly Tuttle reached out to Keith-Hynes to join the band that she was putting together, which would ultimately become Golden Highway. Not long after the band was formed, Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway began touring, performing on shows like Jimmy Kimmel and at large festivals. “I’d never played for crowds like that -- standing room only crowds and younger people who are so energetic,” she said.
Before she joined Golden Highway, Keith-Hynes also began a new project -- working on vocals. “During the pandemic was when I started singing; I’d never had time to do it before,” she said. “I took Zoom vocal lessons, and started trying to sing.” Ultimately, her hard work paid off, and her solo album was released in the summer of 2024 and was nominated for a Grammy as well.
Keith-Hynes is continuing to perform with Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway through June 2025, but after that, she’ll be touring under her own name with a five-piece bluegrass band she’s put together. In addition, she is honing her songwriting skills as she works toward another solo album. And while she’s been busy building her career, she has also focused on her personal life, tying the knot in October of 2024 on the Grand Ole Opry stage with another accomplished and award-winning fiddler, Jason Carter.
With so many projects, Keith-Hynes is always on the move, and says that she finds all of it fulfilling. “Just getting to make a living doing something I love is rewarding,” she said. “I put in a lot more hours than a normal job -- sometimes it feels like I’m working constantly, seven days a week, with very long hours. But when I get up on stage and there’s a ton of people out there and they’re up and giving me back energy -- I love getting to share that moment with people.”
For those who have a similar passion, Keith-Hynes’ advice is to persevere and remain optimistic. “I think you have to do anything you possibly can to make it happen, take any opportunity and just not get discouraged,” she said. “You have to love the whole process and not get caught up in results -- enjoy what happens in the moment. If you’re not enjoying the ride and what you’re doing, it’s not going to be a very rewarding line of work. Enjoy the whole thing and lean into your community, making sure to make positive connections within your community.”

In 2001, Emily Hodson decided to take a break from her career in infectious diseases and initially intended to take a few months to work on her family’s recently purchased farm, which is now Veritas Vineyard & Winery. Since then, Hodson has earned a Master’s in Fermentation Science from Virginia Tech and turned winemaking into her career, marrying her love of science with her passion for creativity.
Hodson has also contributed to the wine community through her work with Winemakers Research Exchange and her collaboration with colleagues and the USDA
to reduce or eliminate downy mildew. Now, nearly 25 years into winemaking, she has been awarded the Rich Smith Award of Excellence, an annual recognition of one winemaker in the U.S. who demonstrates passion, commitment, and collaboration. “It was a surprise and an honor to be on the list with some of the people who have been previously awarded,” Hodson said. “It’s fun for Virginia and the East Coast to be recognized.”
Hodson says that the work that she’s been able to do is possible because of how supportive the Virginia

wine board is, and her peers’ willingness to work together and collaborate. She also credits the land for the quality of her wine. “My site is so phenomenal. The aspect, the elevation, the soil drainage, matched with the grapes that we’ve been slowly adding to our program like Cabernet Franc or Tannat,” she said.
While Hodson loves nearly all elements of winemaking, she says what is most rewarding is having the opportunity to create something every year that’s grown here and expressed here. As for the future, Hodson says there are a number of exciting projects in the works at Veritas, including the release of her first single varietal bottle of tannat.
Winemaking Philosophy: “Stay out of the way! Do as little as possible -- I really want to show the farming. All of these wines are grown, and I always try to highlight that every opportunity I get. I try to stay out of the way and express how the grapes saw the vintage, not how they “should” be.”
What She Loves About Winemaking: “I love the mix of agriculture and growing something, with the science of creating something.”
What She’s Pairing With Her Wine: Hodson makes about 19 wines, so there are plenty of options, but some of her favorites are local fried chicken with Viognier and Caromont Farm’s goat cheese with Sauvignon Blanc.

Explore Roanoke’s food, shopping, vibrant arts scene, and outdoor adventures.
Just two hours from Charlottesville, Roanoke is an ideal destination for a weekend trip for couples, families, or groups of friends. Its 100-foot-high illuminated steel star has earned it the nickname Star City, and its multitude of biking trails are to thank for its recognition as the Mountain Bike Capital of the East. But there are plenty of other reasons to visit, too. Whether you’re strolling around Downtown, walking over to Wasena from Vic Thomas Park, or making the short drive to Grandin Village, there’s no shortage of shops, restaurants, art, and outdoor activities to explore.
If a boutique hotel stay is what you’re searching for, look no further than Fire Station One , a renovated fire station originally built in 1912 that still incorporates design elements from its original use. Each room is decorated in a minimalistic style, and front-facing rooms give guests a bird’s eye view of the town while still remaining cozy and quiet. The hotel’s restaurant, Stock , offers high-quality cocktails, wine, and beer alongside a Scandinavian and Nordic-inspired menu. Visitors can also tour (and purchase from) the selection of home goods and wine in TXTUR , adjacent to Stock on the first floor.
For travelers looking for a different historic hotel, turn to the Hotel Roanoke , built in 1882. The spacious property offers a variety of room sizes, including suites, as well as a spa and multiple dining options.
Food enthusiasts will appreciate the plethora of aromas wafting from the many restaurants in Roanoke’s downtown area. For breakfast or lunch, Scrambled at the City Market Building has something for every egg-lover on the menu. Meanwhile, On The Rise is a solid choice for sandwiches, soups, salads, pizza, and gluten-free options.
For dinner with an expansive view of downtown, make reservations at Six and Sky. The rooftop grille offers a wide array of seafood from crab dip studded with an abundance of lump crab meat to impressive lobster tails and an exquisite rainbow trout with wild mushrooms. Meateaters will be pleased, too, with the selection of steaks available. Thirsty? Choose wine from their curated list, or opt for one of their Instagramworthy seasonal cocktails.
“THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS TO VISIT ROANOKE -- WHETHER YOU’RE STROLLING AROUND DOWNTOWN, WALKING OVER TO WASENA FROM VIC THOMAS PARK, OR MAKING THE SHORT DRIVE TO GRANDIN VILLAGE, THERE’S NO SHORTAGE OF SHOPS, RESTAURANTS, ART, AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES TO EXPLORE.”
Another downtown dining option is Lucky, a stylish yet approachable restaurant and bar serving up sophisticated cocktails alongside comfort food prepared with locally sourced ingredients. For a unique dish, pop into this spot for their Den Hill Farm Lion’s Mane Cakes.
If you feel like exploring a little further, try strolling over to Wasena by way of the Roanoke River Greenway. For breakfast or lunch, stop by RND Coffee Lounge . The small-batch roastery with exposed brick walls is the perfect spot to settle in with coffee, tea, and breakfast or lunch bites like muffins, pastries, bagels, or avocado toast. For dinner, check out bloom , where Chef Nathan Sloan and his team prepare innovative small plates in an open kitchen.
For those headed to Grandin Village to visit the historic Grandin Theater and peruse the shops, consider fueling up at Scratch Biscuit . Get a housemade biscuit stacked with dozens of options and combinations from eggs, fried chicken, and country ham to catfish or Spam.
Finally, if you want to take a tour of cuisines, try heading down Williamson Road. For Asian, Middle Eastern, Cuban, and Mexican, try Viet Sub, Sticks & Spoons Ramen , Bethlehem Restaurant and Grocery, Cuban Island , and Mi Tapatia
Roanoke is filled with art at nearly every turn, from the sculptures in Elmwood Art Park to the statue of Henrietta Lacks in the eponymous plaza dedicated to her -- and much more. One must-see is the Taubman Museum of Art , which is, itself, a masterpiece -- its architecture pays homage to the Shenandoah Valley and mountains. Visit the free museum and tour their
multiple permanent collections, or pay a small fee to also visit the ticketed exhibitions. Don’t miss out on the stunning, colorful mural painted by blind artist John Bramblitt. Other museums in the area include the Virginia Museum of Transportation , Roanoke Pinball Museum , and STARcade -- adults and children will enjoy them all, and the latter two are interactive.
There are numerous shops for books, clothes, and food throughout Roanoke, but for the lover of thrift shopping, no trip to Roanoke is complete without a trip to Black Dog Salvage . The 40,000+ square foot store is filled with unique architectural salvage-inspired design and work from regional artisans. It's also the home of the “Salvage Dawgs” show from DIY Network.
If getting outside is your goal on vacation, Roanoke is the place to do it. Opportunities for biking, paddling, fishing, and hiking abound, and making your way up to the Roanoke Star is a must. For a fairly easy hike that’s worth the drive, head to Roaring Run Falls for a peaceful trail that leads to a breathtaking waterfall. A vibrant splash of passion fruit transforms and elevates a traditional brunch favorite into something luxe and artisanal. Passion Fruit Mimosas maintain the core beauty and simplicity of a mimosa, while lending depth and complexity to its classic citrus profile. The resulting cocktail is
• 1-750 ml bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine, chilled
• ¾ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
• ¼ cup passion fruit juice or puree (mango or guava juice can be used as a substitute)
• 2-4 teaspoons simple syrup or agave syrup, depending on your desired sweetness level (optional)
• Pinch of sea salt (optional, enhances flavor)
• ¼ cup fresh passion fruit seeds and pulp (approximately 2-3 passion fruits) for garnish (optional)
• Orange wedges for garnish (optional)
Asha Clare has served as a chef at multiple Charlottesville restaurants, including Tavola, Inn at Court Square, Keswick Hall, and Maya. She has also been a personal private chef under her business name of Bella Clare Personal Chef and Catering and is the founder of the artisanal hospitality company Kitchen Fairy. www.KitchenFairy.co.
floral, nectarous with notes of melon, effervescent, and refined.
For an even more elevated presentation, garnish with a sugared rim and add fresh edible flowers or herbs. Or, transform the drink into a mocktail by using sparkling water in place of the Champagne.
Step 1. Combine the orange juice, passion fruit juice, simple syrup (or agave), and a pinch of sea salt in a small pitcher. Stir to combine.
Step 2. Assemble the mimosas just before serving:
• Slightly tilt your Champagne flute or desired glassware and fill 2/3 with Champagne, letting it run down the inside of the glass
• Add ½ tablespoon fresh passion fruit pulp and seeds (if using)
• Top off with the passion fruit and orange juice blend
• Garnish with an orange wedge and enjoy!
tips for success:
• Chill your Champagne if it’s room temperature (approximately three hours in the refrigerator, but can be done days in advance).
• Prepare the juice blend at least thirty minutes (up to one day) before serving.

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings.
As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions
associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.
In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.
Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.
For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.
No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.
