THE LOCAL MEN'S GROUP TURNING MORNINGS INTO MOMENTUM

The Gentlemen's Issue

The month of June is always a time for transition, as we slide into the warm days and nights of summer and embrace the ability to take full advantage of all that our area has to offer, from hiking and biking to water sports, outdoor concerts, and festivals. But it’s also a time to celebrate the men in our lives. In this month’s Gentlemen’s issue, we are turning our attention to the dads, mentors, neighbors, and friends who are part of the backbone of our community.

In this issue, we bring to you the story of a renowned local surgeon and professor who has supported the community for decades through leadership, education, and outreach. We also highlight the work of a longtime winemaker who’s bringing years of passion and know-how to one of the area’s newer vineyards. Finally, we’ve also rounded up some local destinations that are perfect for celebrating Father’s Day, whether you’re celebrating with little ones or adults.

We are always so grateful to you for welcoming our magazine into your home and giving us the opportunity to tell the stories of what makes our area an amazing place to live, work, and play. We’re also deeply thankful to our partners and hope that you’ll take the time to explore their services, stop by their shops, or spread the word about them!

Warmly,

LEADING WITH skill and COMPASSION

Dr. Bobby Chhabra has dedicated his entire career to UVA Medical Center and School of Medicine, joining the faculty in 2002 and serving as Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery since 2013. Under his leadership, the department has more than doubled in size and developed the UVA Orthopaedic Center, a project he considers one of his proudest accomplishments.

"It took ten years to open the Orthopaedic Center," Dr. Chhabra said. "We consolidated into one building outpatient orthopaedic care, a therapy gym, imaging, and operating rooms. It's a culmination of a lot of  effort and collaboration to build a premier orthopaedic center for our patients."

The center represents Dr. Chhabra's vision of creating both a patient-centric and team-centric environment. His focus now is "continuing to hire the right surgeons and team members" as demand for their services grows. He said, "We are looking to become a national destination site, and that people come from across the country for their orthopaedic care.”

What makes the orthopaedic care at UVA unique is its comprehensive approach. "We have nationally recognized surgeons in every specialty and an incredible level of access to our care," says Dr. Chhabra. In March, they launched an orthopaedic after-hours

walk-in clinic, which he describes as "an enormous service to our community and to the university."

Dr. Chhabra emphasized that what truly sets the center apart isn't just the facilities. "It's not just the building; it's the people who work in the building and a culture focused on providing the best patient care possible. We want each patient to feel like they're the most important person in the building."

Community engagement is central to Dr. Chhabra's mission. He hosts a weekly radio show discussing sports injuries to educate the community, and the UVA Orthopaedic Center holds an annual community open house with educational opportunities about injury prevention. His department is involved with the Charlottesville Free Clinic, where his wife, Sandhya Chhabra is one of the Directors, providing orthopaedic care to under-resourced members of our community.

The department serves multiple missions beyond clinical care. "We educate the next generation of orthopaedic specialists," Dr. Chhabra notes. "We have a strong research program, and I'm proud that we have been recognized as one of the top orthopaedic residency training programs in the country."

For the future, Dr. Chhabra hopes to continue providing "the highest level of access for patients with orthopaedic needs in our community " while recruiting and retaining top talent.

“It's not just the building; it's the people who work in the building and a culture focused on providing the best patient care possible. We want each patient to feel like they're the most important person in the building.”

WINE CRAFTED WITH HEART, SKILL, AND HISTORY.
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER WALDERA

Winemaker Boela Gerber.

In 2023, after over two decades of winemaking at Groot Constantia in South Africa, Boela Gerber made the decision to transition to Southwest Mountains Vineyards in Keswick, Virginia. The expansive vineyard, owned by Paul and Diane Manning, boasts approximately 70 acres of vines that are hand-harvested each year, and the fruits of Boela and his team’s labor can be found in the bottles and glasses in the winery’s upscale yet comfortable tasting room overlooking the mountains.

“I added the value that I could in Cape Town,” Gerber said. “The environment here in Virginia is exciting right now -- it’s maturing rapidly. There was really good quality in the bottle here already -- I want to make something exceptional.”

Gerber graduated from Stellenbosch University in South Africa, where he initially intended to pursue a general science degree. But before he finished his freshman year, he turned his sights toward becoming a wine specialist and ultimately graduated with a degree focused on oenology. It was actually during his time at Stellenbosch that he had his first brush with Virginia wine when he studied the esteemed Dr. Bruce Zoecklein’s textbook in his second year.

Though the vast majority of his career was rooted in South Africa, Gerber has experience that spans the globe. His first international harvest experience was at Château Angélus in Saint-Émilion, France. Then, during his time at Groot Constantia, he took several sabbaticals, making wine in France, Spain, Italy, and California.

Gerber says he has a special relationship with Merlot, thanks to that first harvest at Château Angélus, and it shows in the wine that he makes from the grape. But Gerber’s skill also shines through in all of his other varietals, including Petit Manseng, a grape that he was unfamiliar with before coming to Virginia. “It was obscure -- I’d never heard of it,” he said. “It’s very unique to Virginia, and it grows particularly well here.”

The opportunity to explore different grapes, like Petit Manseng and Viognier, was one draw to working at Southwest Mountains Vineyards. “Virginia is quite complex. There are all of these variations,” he said. “I appreciate the diversity, the variation -- it keeps you on your toes. We’re really still exploring sites and soils… there’s a lot that still needs to be discovered. It’s exhilarating.”

Gerber also credits Paul Manning’s support as being integral to the process of making and improving the wine. “It’s a passion project for Paul -- that makes it fun for me,” Gerber said. General Manager Dave Kostelnik agrees. “The Manning family is so connected and passionate about making the winery successful,” Kostelnik said. "It's great to be given the opportunity to set our sights high.”

"We’re trying to mirror what’s happening in the vineyard... What we’re trying to achieve is to express the area."

In addition to his studies and international winemaking, Gerber also seeks out opportunities to explore a variety of wines as a means of improving his own work. “It’s important to broaden your horizon and continuously sharpen your tasting skills,” he said. To achieve that goal, in South Africa, he was a member of three different tasting groups that each met once a month, where he tasted wines ranging from benchmark and classic to obscure. Additionally, he was a wine judge for over six years, tasting countless international wines. “Boela has some experiences that others don’t,” Kostelnik said. “It’s apparent in the final product.”

In addition, Gerber appreciates the collaborative spirit of Virginia’s wine community. “I really appreciate the diversity -- it’s a melting pot of knowledge with lots of experiences,” he said. “It really accelerates the learning curve in Virginia.”

Moving forward, Gerber says that his goal is to continue to work on sustainability efforts while also learning, improving, and making extraordinary wines with the grapes at Southwest Mountains Vineyards. “We’re trying to mirror what’s happening in the vineyard -- there’s a lot we can do to maximize what’s in the vineyard,” he said. “What we’re trying to achieve is to express the area.”

men moving with purpose

Local F3 member Dan Purnell shared what the organization is and how men can get involved.

FULL NAME OF THE ORGANIZATION:

F3 - Fitness, Fellowship & Faith. To be clear, faith has no particular denomination. We define faith as the belief in something bigger than yourself.

WHAT ARE THE CORE TENETS OF F3?

• Free of Charge: All workouts are free to attend, ensuring accessibility for anyone.

• Open to All Men: Regardless of age, experience level, or background, all men are welcome to participate.

• Held Outdoors: Workouts take place outdoors, rain or shine, emphasizing resilience and a connection with nature.

• Peer-Led : Workouts are led by fellow members who rotate, fostering a sense of community and leadership.

• End with a Circle of Trust: Each workout concludes with a "Circle of Trust," a time for men to connect, share, and support one another.

WHAT

IS THE MISSION OF F3?

The mission of F3 is “to plant, grow & serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership.” Men initially come to know us as a workout group in town, but almost all men come back for the fellowship and to help give back to the community through our group.

F3 really has hit on the issue of male loneliness. After college, work, getting married, and having kids, it’s easy to fall into a pattern

of isolation and hard to make meaningful friendships with other men. F3 gives an outlet for men to meet in an environment that supports vulnerability and emotional support. Men build friendships with other men differently than women do. We need shared experiences and shared suffering to build those bonds and connections. F3 is the perfect environment for that.

HOW DO MEMBERS FULFILL THAT PURPOSE?

There are lots of opportunities to lead within F3. Things as simple as bringing coffee to a workout so everyone can have some fellowship after the workout, or leading an “AO” (Area of Operation), and coordinating volunteers to lead each week. F3 is a peer-led organization, meaning that anyone in the group can lead a workout. We have around 22 weekly workouts throughout Charlottesville, that is 22 opportunities to step up and lead a group of men. We also step up and lead in the community by doing annual food drives, gifts for

Man running in the early hours of the morning.

underserved kids at Christmas, and leading/organizing The Haven 8k race annually, which is their single largest fundraiser of the year.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD READERS KNOW ABOUT F3?

We have a very supportive and inclusive culture that focuses on men of ALL fitness levels. I’ve seen guys who couldn’t finish workouts, but our group rallies around them to make sure they still feel included. The F3 motto is "we will not leave any man behind, and we will not leave any man where we find him.”

Every man gets a nickname after their first workout. Mine is Cheesy Poof, which was derived from my previous career with Utz Potato Chips. This is an important part of F3. We shed our identity… and come to the

group as [our nicknames], which puts everyone on a level playing field socially. It’s not about what you do, how much money you make, or what social circles you run in. It’s about having a shared experience to continually get better together.

Also, [it’s] important to point out that we have a sister organization with the same principles called FiA - Females in Action. Check out www.fianation.com

HOW CAN POTENTIAL NEW MEMBERS GET INVOLVED OR LEARN MORE?

The best place to start is by jumping into a workout that is on our calendar or emailing us directly so we can give you more information about getting involved. F3Cville.com

RELAXATION MEETS refined living

Gourmet food, world-class golf, and a spa oasis just outside of Charlottesville.

Horizon Pool. Photo Courtesy of Keswick Hall.

Built in 1912, Keswick Hall is a GeorgianItalianate Styled Villa that now serves as a serene getaway just a short drive from the heart of Charlottesville. After a several-phase renovation that was completed in the fall of 2021, the updated resort offers nearly twice the number of rooms, multiple settings for food and drinks, an award-winning golf course, two pools, athletic courts, upscale rooms and suites, and top-tier amenities.

STAY

With 88 rooms to choose from, there are a variety of options suitable for solo travelers, couples, and families, all with stunning views of the 600-acre property. Each guest room features Duxiana mattresses fitted with 600 thread-count Frette linens and custom bath amenities by red flower.

The calming light blue and white interior of the hotel was the vision of owner Molly Hardie, and no trip is complete without a stroll down the Grand Staircase. Carefully curated artwork on the walls is sourced from a variety of artists, including Anne Blackwell Thompson, whose hand-pressed foliage is featured throughout the hotel as a tribute to the natural beauty of the Virginia landscape and surroundings. There are multiple places throughout the hotel for guests to relax, unwind, and enjoy the landscape, including the Garden Room, which offers a sprawling view of the Full Cry golf course.

FULL CRY GOLF COURSE

This award-winning Pete Dye-designed golf course offers a challenge to players against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains while Bald Eagles swoop in to fish in the pond. Open to members as well as guests of the hotel, the course sports two grasses -- Bermuda and fescue -- for clarity of contrast. Meanwhile, artistry abounds in the form of railroad ties, sand traps, and planks for texture. “If you play golf overseas, you’d see similarities,” said Club Manager Rob McNamara. “There are a lot of holes that remind you of Scotland.”

ATHLETICS AND RELAXATION

Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate the European Red Clay surfaces on Keswick Hall’s courts as well as the ability to play at night, thanks to the top-notch lighting. Pickleball and basketball courts are available as well. Or, simply jog or stroll along the paths on the property and enjoy the work of Landscape Architect Yara Acker, who has meticulously planned the outdoor spaces for decades.

Two pools are available for swimming (or relaxing), too. At the pavilion, a large members-only pool is adjacent to an indoor and outdoor area that’s frequently used for events like winemaker dinners or the annual 4th of July gathering. At the hotel, guests can enjoy stunning views from the adult-only Horizon Pool that is heated to 84 degrees year-round.

For guests looking for a particularly peaceful afternoon, Keswick Hall’s spa is the ideal destination. It offers a comprehensive menu of hair, nail, face, and body treatments along with added amenities that include a eucalyptus shower, sauna, and a relaxation room where guests can unwind with complimentary small snacks and infused waters.

Keswick Hall stands as one of the best surviving examples of Italianatestyle architecture in Virginia today. One of the first examples of Renaissance Revival-style architecture, Italianate design principles themselves are some of the most historic ever used in the United States. Keswick Hall has influences of both Renaissance Revival & Palladianism.

DINING AND DRINKS

Adjacent to the Horizon Pool is Crawford’s, named for the original owners of Keswick Hall. The elegant spot offers bar seats and tables and serves wine and beer as well as inventive cocktails and mocktails. A menu of small plates, entrees, and shareable items is available, too.

A meal at Marigold by JeanGeorges is a can’t-miss at Keswick Hall, whether it’s for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Settle in indoors, or reserve a table on the deck with views of 10 out of the 18 holes on Full Cry.

The seasonal menu at Marigold includes raw options like sashimi and tuna tartare, appetizers like burrata with a strawberry compote, an array of plant-based options, and exquisitely prepared entrees including seared scallops with roasted cauliflower, avocado, and espelette, and beef tenderloin with spring vegetables and salsa verde. The beer and wine lists offer options to complement any meal, or guests can order spirits from the well-stocked bar. Anyone looking to punctuate a meal with something sweet can enjoy desserts that lean toward the lighter side, like sorbet, or reach for something richer, like a salted caramel ice cream sundae or molten chocolate cake.

ADDITIONAL AMENITIES AT KESWICK HALL

In addition to all of the offerings Keswick Hall has for guests, they’ve also formed partnerships to further elevate the experience. In collaboration with BMW of America, the resort is offering vehicles for guests to test drive with flexible times, potentially up to an entire day. Plus, one BMW is set aside as a chauffeur vehicle.

Additionally, Keswick Hall has partnered with King Family Vineyards for a one-of-a-kind Sunday polo experience. Guests who are staying for the weekend can extend their visit through Sunday night at a discounted rate and attend a day-long polo event at the vineyard. Guests can enjoy wine and access to Keswick Hall’s exclusive midline tent in addition to chauffeured service to and from the VIP-style event.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA

Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.”

Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life. So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime. Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estate-land, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape— and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-square-feet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent— ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).

For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.

Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-ofthe-art accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-em-from-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.

HOW

TO GET HERE

Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.

SUMMER GRILL

RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely,

chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped

• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 3 Cloves garlic, minced

• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 Teaspoon salt

• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 Ears sweet corn

• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes

• ¼ Cup lime juice

• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• ½ Cup white onion, chopped

• 2 Cloves garlic, minced

• Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.

2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.

3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.

4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.
