Pamela Jouan loves to tell a good story. After many years of radio promotion and marketing for Atlantic Records, she decided to pursue her love of writing and started a company creating magazines for celebrity chefs, restaurants, and boutique hotels. She has written and published over 250 branded magazines under hautelifepress.com. Gather around the fire pit.
Small spaces can be magical.
As the summer humidity starts to finally drift away, cooler evenings mean more outside gatherings. We chatted with award-winning landscape designer Linda Greenberg, of Linda Greenberg Landscaping Design (LGLD), about ways we can spruce up our outdoor areas - from window boxes to back yards!
“The arrival sequence from the driveway to the front door is one of the most important considerations when designing,” Greenberg says. She recommends unique planters on either side of the front door, filled with a variety of thriller, filler, and spiller plant materials. “This begins with a larger center piece in the planter, like an evergreen or ornamental grass, then layering in pops of fall color,” Greenberg suggests. She recommends pansies, ornamental cabbages, and snapdragons dianthus with the final touch of a trailing plant like Creeping Jenny or Weeping Rosemary.
Greenberg started creating landscape designs more than 25 years and has won Best of Houzz for the past nine consecutive years.
“I pride myself on giving great service and making every garden extraordinary in some way. LGLD has a fabulous team of professionals that can literally create and install anything that you can imagine for the outdoors,” she says.
Although she’s worked for clients who have large backyards and hard spaces (things like outdoor patios, pools, and kitchens), Greenberg loves working with smaller spaces too, including window boxes.
HERE ARE SOME OF GREENBERG’S TIPS FOR A COZY FALL AMBIENCE OUTSIDE:
1. Gather around a fire pit - Greenberg recommends four teak or Adirondack chairs to circle the setting - and use throws or pillows to add a splash of color.
2. Plant window boxes that are overflowing with a variety of textures, forms, fragrances, and color.
3. Plant a garden filled with trees, shrubs and ground covers that have fall interests so when one stops blooming, another is coming, like the turning leaves.
4. Use every inch of your property, beginning with the property lines.
5. An oversized water fountain creates ambiance and tranquility. “They can change the garden vibe completely! Plus, they attract pollinators and birds!”
“Most people have a favorite plant that makes them happy, and I make note of those when working with them. After all, “a garden evokes and creates memories for a lifetime.”
@TheCharlestonMoms curated a pumpkin craft and “spooky” recipe for fall family fun.
Craft materials for your pumpkin sun catchers. Add the colors and shapes you love. Fun for all ages!
October is pumpkin month! From pumpkin spice everything to jack-o-lantern carving, it just wouldn’t be fall without them.
Halloween is more than just one day of the month, it’s a month-long theme for outdoor neighborhood parties, costume contests, and, of course, jump scares! With the cooler weather in October, Halloween is also the perfect theme for family fun - from crafts to cooking.
We asked Joan Sturgis and Jody Vitali of Charleston Moms (@thecharlestonmoms) for fun Halloween activities for all age groups. Cheers!
GRAVEYARD DIRT CUPS
• 8oz clear plastic cups
• Chocolate pudding
• Oreos
• Candy eyeballs
• Milano cookies
• Gummy worms
• Pumpkin candy corn
Assemble your graveyard dirt cup starting with alternating layers of crushed Oreo cookie and chocolate pudding. You can also add candy eyeballs in these layers. On top, use a Milano cookie as a “headstone” and assemble your candy. Then enjoy your quick and easy graveyard dirt cup. Feel free to swap out your candy/cookie of choice.
PUMPKIN SUN CATCHERS
• Orange and black cardstock/ construction paper
• Colorful cellophane or tissue paper
• Scissors
• Tape
• Glue
• Laminating paper/ self-adhesive paper
Start by drawing a pumpkin outline on your paper and cutting it out. Draw and cut shapes for the pumpkin’s face too. Using cellophane or tissue paper, cut 2–4-inch squares and other shapes to fill your sun catcher.
Place the self-adhesive paper or laminating paper sticky-side-up and secure with a small piece of tape on each corner. Place the pumpkin outline on the sticky paper and arrange the face. Use tissue paper or cellophane to fill the pumpkin.
Put another sheet of self-adhesive paper on top (sticky-sides together) to “seal” your sun catcher. Cut around the pumpkin and hang in a window with lots of sunshine. You can add glitter or buttons for a more sensory activity. Have fun with it!
Marsh & Magnolia is destined to be a Charleston hot spot

Charleston native Isabella Macbeth has shucked more than 3,000,000 oysters, but she remains steadfast on her personal quest to be a knowledgeable champion of oysters, farmers, and oceans. “I love helping guide people into their journey with oysters,” she says. “My life’s passion is exemplifying what a maven is: an expert, a guide, and a teacher.”
ARTICLE BY EILEEN DAILY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY @HOLY_CITY_OYSTER_MAVEN
At NICO Oysters + Seafood in Mount Pleasant, Macbeth is indeed that teacher. “I am very lucky that I have served many people their first oyster.” She focuses on asking the right questions and listening carefully to each guest. “I never recommend the same oyster to every person. I ask if they’re a sweet or savory person - that one question can completely change their first impression of oysters.”
Oysters and her love for them have taken Macbeth on figurative and literal journeys around the world. “When I eat oysters from different places, I get a sense that I’m visiting there,” she says. “Shucking oysters has taken me to parts of the world I never thought I’d see,”
she reflects. “I get to connect with farms and shuckers around the globe, which brings me joy.”
Macbeth competes in at least six national shucking competitions each year, her favorite being the Wellfleet Oyster Festival in Massachusetts. On her bucket list? Cancale in Brittany, France. “The women of Cancale were, for generations, left for months when the men were on long fishing trips,” she explains. “The women managed the town and fed the children by cultivating the wild oysters.”
Until she sets off on that dream trip to Cancale, she’ll be your oyster maven right here, sharing her expertise and passion with the lucky guests at NICO.
Our pets are part of our families, and Charleston has a strong dog-loving culture. But how often do you think about the K9 police dogs trained to tirelessly defend and dutifully ensure peace in our city? These four-legged K9 officers sweep for narcotics as well as help track and locate crime suspects. You might have seen a police dog at the airport, but besides the Aviation Authority, they also work with the FBI, The U.S. Coast Guard, and neighboring police departments.
The Law Enforcement Neighborhood Support (LENS) Foundation of Charleston is a nonprofit that supports law
enforcement efforts to strengthen community relations and improve public safety. Wagoween is a fun, family event that helps raise money for the dogs’ retirement care, protective equipment, and specialized training. The cost of procurement, training, care, and special equipment for each K-9 Officer is an estimated $25,000 over their career. Typically, the handling police officers adopt their retiring partners and assume the burden of care and food costs.
Last year’s Wagoween enjoyed overwhelming support from the community and included such esteemed guests
as Mayor John Tecklenburg, Charlie the Riverdogs mascot, Shep Rose from TV's Southern Charm, and, of course, the CPD K9 unit. This year's event will also honor the memory of late Charleston Police Chief Luther Reynolds, who attended last year.
Wagoween 2023 will take place at Charleston Place Hotel on “Second Sunday,” October 8, and promises to delight with creative costumes, fabulous prizes, and celebrity judges. The blocks between Queen and Calhoun will be closed to vehicle traffic and open for canine trick-or-treating.

ARTICLE BY PAMELA JOUAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAGOWEEN CHARLESTONDr. Suzie Dubrinski has been that patient, sitting in the dental chair, hoping to leave with a smile on her face. “I didn’t get braces until I was 19,” she says. “I was made fun of on a daily basis in high school because of my crooked teeth.” After braces, she could see the change in her smile, of course, but she also felt more confident, which inspired her to help others feel that same way.
“It’s so empowering when you take somebody that has felt like I did, self-conscious and unhappy with their smile, and see that transformation within a couple of visits.”
The waiting room at Sculpt Dental Spa is more like a family room, with a cozy fireplace and aromatherapy. “There’s a lot of apprehension about going to the dentist, so we wanted to make the space as inviting as possible.” Other thoughtful touches include offering blankets and paraffin hand dips to patients in the chair.
Dr. Suzie’s path to opening her Charleston practice was, quite deliberately, years in the making. Although she offers services commonly performed at a dentist’s office, there are several that might surprise you. “Our passion lies in making people feel better, and that’s what made me gravitate to procedures you don’t necessarily learn about in dentistry school.” For example: using Botox to alleviate TMJ pain or to fix a smile; creating night guards and snore guards for the benefit of not just the patient, but their partner; and investing in the latest 3-D scanners and printers so that some appliances can be made in-house to save time.
It took additional training and significant investment, but it was important to Dr. Suzie to branch out into all avenues of interest to her patients and focus on a more “artistic side of dentistry.”
Sculpt Dental Spa is a family-feel operation. With her husband Jesse as COO and lead manager, and her best friend as her hygienist, Dr. Suzie has plenty to smile about. And so will you! Learn more about Dr. Suzie and her practice at www.sculptdentalspa.com.

Kelley Andrews-Edwards didn’t need another job. She was a full-time lawyer and mother to a baby girl. But she couldn’t let go of that look on her dad’s face when she and her brother surprised him with homemade oyster tables one Christmas. “I knew this was a niche market not being filled, because I would have been a customer!” That gut feeling resonated, and Kelley found herself at her computer crunching numbers and churning out a business plan which she emailed to the rest of her family. Were they in or out?
Oh, they were IN. Her brother is a co-owner and her husband stains and cures tables. “It’s definitely a team effort. I’m not doing the physical work, but I was the fuel and motivation to get this off the ground.” For that, you can add Charleston grit to her resumé!
Although the tables were originally designed for the ultimate Lowcountry seasonal tradition, it quickly became apparent that they were so much more. Reimagined as a multi-functional outdoor entertainment table, they double beautifully as a charcuterie board, a beverage-serving table, or game table. Kelley used one as a party favor table at her daughter’s birthday party and as a tasting table where she sourced a Champagne bucket that fit perfectly into the center. The perfect wedding gift, the table can be engraved with the couple’s names and wedding date. It’s easy to visualize this table as a stunning centerpiece at any event.
Each table is lovingly handcrafted, stained, and cured; a unique artisanal piece with its own serial number burnt into it on the backside. “I have so many great memories of oyster roasts growing up,” Kelley says. “It’s such a fun, communal experience and so different from sitting at a table.”
Although they come in three standard sizes and several stain options, Charleston Oyster Tables will work with you for a custom-build, including a specific color palette. Traveling for your oyster roast location? Each table’s legs fold under, making them easier to transport and store.
