Cathy Carter is amazing! I recently moved to Arizona from out of state, she worked tirelessly on my behalf and honestly, made me feel so comfortable, as if I were her only client. That’s a rare talent! Cathy knew within our first 30 minutes together which neighborhood would be perfect AND found my great new home within my price range. In addition, Cathy met with and helped my family members while she coordinated inspectors and other trade professionals involved with the sale. Cathy is a true pro and I highly recommend you contact her!

LIFESTYLE LETTER
What's For Dinner?
I don’t know about you, but every day, either late afternoon or early evening, someone in my family asks the dreaded question, “What’s for dinner?”
I don’t like to cook. I’ve tried. It’s just not my thing. I make a mean baked ziti and pancakes in letter and number shapes, but the rest, well, let’s take in, shall we?
And so, often, it’s 5 p.m., my family is starving, and I’m staring down the refrigerator like it’s going to whip up a meal and plate it for us all.

Thankfully, we live in Chandler, which is partly known for its food and beverage offerings.
We’re lucky enough to have everything from mom-and-pop destinations dishing up meals made using recipes passed down through the generations to James Beard Award–winning chefs showcasing their culinary prowess nightly. We have creative cocktails. We have food spanning just about all ethnicities and regions of the world.
Hungry and thirsty yet?
Our Food & Drink Issue is always one of my favorites because even though I hate cooking, I love to eat. Exploring the textures, tastes, and sips is perfection. I love to see how items are plated, drinks are presented, and how they pair together.
In this issue, we explore the area’s culinary stories. Meet the couple who are now opening their third location of The Parlay Kitchen + Cocktails. Take a tour of SanTan Brewing Co., which has a brewery and craft distillery here (and you can tour the location!). Check out TESO Life, a Japanese lifestyle store. You can also learn about the latest in kitchen trends. Oh, and if you want to be ready for Halloween, check out the "spook-cuterie!"
Cheers to this issue!

IN THE KITCHEN
Three Local Designers Dish on Their Current Favorite Kitchen Trends

The Trends I’m Loving: Arches and a statement patterned tile What I Like About Them: We have had a movement toward clean lines and squaring things off the past few years, and I think the resurgence of curves and arches coming back is a wonderful juxtaposition to all the hard lines. It really softens a space and is so visually pleasing to the eye. In a kitchen, when you pair the arches with a fun patterned tile, I think it feels fun and timeless all at the same time. Product Recommendations: I love the options of patterned tiles at Bedrosians and Facings of America if you’re looking to source some great options locally. Tabarka Studio also has some wonderful bespoke tiles that would work with any project.

The Trend I’m Loving: Woven accents What I Like About It: Woven pieces bring a warm, natural texture to the space, adding a touch of organic interest. These pieces, whether in the form of pendant lighting, counter stools, or baskets, create a cozy, inviting atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with modern cabinets and countertops. Woven elements also provide a subtle nod to craftsmanship and tradition, giving the kitchen a timeless design. Product Recommendations: All featured items available for purchase through TomKat Design. What Homeowners Should Know: While woven accents add warmth and character to a kitchen, it’s important to avoid overusing various textured elements. Too many different woven pieces in various colors can feel too busy. Focus on one main element or a few smaller accents with woven texture.

The Trends I’m Loving: Warm wood finishes, two-toned cabinets, mixed metal tones, slab backsplashes What I Like About Them: The texture and contrast of all the various materials keeps it warm and interesting.
Warm wood finishes: My personal favorite is adding warm wood and wood-look materials through cabinetry, flooring, accent pieces, and architectural elements. White oak and walnut have been a favorite and at the top of wood trends. In addition, I also love to use clear alder. It has an even, textured wood grain that accepts stains well while allowing the grain to show through. It also works well in many different design styles, from modern to traditional.
Two-tone cabinetry: By mixing wood stain and painted cabinets, it provides character and depth to your kitchen. It also allows the ability to define different zones, which can create visual interest. Mixed metals: When mixing metals, I like to stick to two to three finishes. The key is to select metals with contrast and a mix of warm and a cool finish.
Slab backsplash: By carrying the slab of the countertop up the backsplash, it provides a clean and luxe look.
What Homeowners Should Know: My best advice is to follow the trends you love. If you love certain design elements, you still will several years from now. Your home should reflect you, your lifestyle, and the people and things that you love.

BEHIND THE BEER

ARTICLE BY REBECCA L. RHOADES | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON LY

TAKE A TOUR OF SANTAN BREWING CO.’S CHANDLER PRODUCTION FACILITY
Nothing’s better than sitting outside on a cool autumn evening and sipping a pint of your favorite craft brew—other than perhaps getting a behind-the-scenes look at where it’s made.
SanTan Brewing Co. is Arizona’s largest independent craft brewery. Its beers are available in its pub/restaurant in Downtown Chandler and at an outpost at Sky Harbor International Airport, as well as through thousands of retailers across the state. But many people—locals and visitors alike—make the trek to North Chandler to take a tour of its brewery, SanTan Gardens. It’s one of the most popular stops on Arizona’s craft beer circuit.
ARIZONA MADE
Anthony Cannechia opened SanTan Brewing Co. in September 2007 after years working as the head brewer at Four Peaks Brewing Co., which has been owned by Anheuser-Busch since 2015. Cannechia moved on because he wanted to experiment with American-style beers and new hops and grains that were coming out at the time.
For the next five-plus years, he brewed, canned, and kegged upward of 12,000 barrels of lagers, IPAs, and ales annually at SanTan’s original Downtown Chandler location. But as demand for the hoppy beverages increased, the brewery soon outgrew its center of operations. In 2012, Cannechia purchased the building that houses SanTan Gardens, and on April 8, 2013, the company brewed its first beer in its new facility. These days, SanTan brews approximately 1.8 million gallons of beer each year.
Of course, never one to rest on his laurels, Cannechia decided to add to SanTan’s offerings and began making spirits. SanTan now is also the state’s largest independent craft distillery. It boasts a broad range of spirits, including small-batch whiskeys, vodkas, and gins, as well as a selection of ready-to-serve and canned cocktails.
In October 2019, SanTan opened its brew facility to the public. Lively and interactive guided tours take guests inside the craft beer and spirits labs, offering a peek into the brewing and distilling process, and include an education about the past and future of SanTan Brewing Co.
A BREW-MAZING EXPERIENCE
“We get pretty immersive,” says tour guide Willie Talbert, who also is the brewery’s tasting room and events manager. “We want our tours to be educational, but we also want to make them entertaining. What’s great is that every tour guide puts their own spin on it and uses personal experience and things like that to change up the tours.”
Suds lovers will learn how SanTan brews and distills its award-winning beverages. Ten stations guide patrons on an in-depth journey through the 35,000-square-foot facility.
There’s grain handling, where barley, wheat, and rye are milled; and the brewhouse where the grains are soaked in hot water to convert the starches into sugars, creating a sweet solution called wort, and hops are added. The tank farm is where the mixture is left to ferment in large, cone-shaped stainless-steel tanks for two to six weeks. Each tank holds just over 7,700 gallons. And at craft packaging, more than 280 12-ounce cans are filled each minute.
At the stillhouse, tourgoers learn how SanTan transforms its brew base into whiskey, vodka, and gin.
“At SanTan, all of our beers and spirits start the exact same way, on the same system,” Talbert explains. “The only difference is when we’re making spirits, no hops are added whatsoever.”
More than 500 proof gallons are produced each week. And at barrel storage, the distilled spirits are left to age in oak barrels that are stacked seven or eight barrels high.
For Tempe resident Chandler Hord, his girlfriend Ashlie Fraser, and her mom, Elisha Percival, who was visiting from Lexington, Kentucky, the biggest surprise “was learning about the whiskey,” Hord notes.
Fraser adds, “This was my first beer tour. It was really good.”
QUENCH YOUR THIRST
Of course, the best part of a brewery tour is the tastings. And SanTan kicks its tours off with a solid serving of one of its most popular beers, Juicy Jack hazy IPA.
Select stops include more sample tastings, including sips of the single-malt whiskey wash, the sour, cidery liquid that evolves from the brewing process and is distilled into whiskey; two of the award-winning whiskeys; ready-to-drink cocktails; and the other top-selling IPA, MoonJuice. The tour caps off with a sample of SanTan’s newest creation, a bottled martini made with vodka, espresso, and maple simple syrup.
“I've had a lot of people who have done brewery tours before, and they say that this one of the best ones they’ve been on,” Talbert notes.
Tours of SanTan Brewing Co. are offered every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The cost is $15 per person.

THE PERFECT RECIPE

The Parlay Kitchen + Cocktails Opens Its Third Location This Fall
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROCHELLE PEREZ
Erica and Kyle Walters have always shared the common goal of opening several restaurants, based around a concept they’ve created.

“We kind of just knew... that we had a recipe for what it was going to take.”
The couple, who have been married for eight years and have two children, met while working in the restaurant industry.
“After efficiently running other restaurants for years that were not ours, and being inhibited from doing things our way, or wanting to change things that were not necessarily ours to change, we just knew there would eventually be a time where we’d open our own restaurant,” Erica says.
The couple achieved their goal in August 2019 when they opened their first location of The Parlay Kitchen + Cocktails at 1245 S. Price Road, Chandler.
The restaurant, which is open for lunch, dinner, and brunch on the weekends, is an American Gastropub that serves a blend of traditional and modern cuisine created from handcrafted recipes.
“Kyle scouted locations for years before the stars aligned just right for us, and the opportunity for
Price Road presented itself,” Erica says. “We kind of just knew that it was the right time and that we had a recipe for what it was going to take. We always maintained realistic expectations and both had the ability to work in every and any area of the restaurant.”
After their restaurant made it through the pandemic and began to thrive again, the couple decided to open a second location in March 2023 at 9220 E. Via De Ventura, Scottsdale.
Erica and Kyle are now working hard to open their third location, tentatively scheduled to open this month, at 4850 S. Gilbert Road, Chandler.
Interestingly, the couple opened this location together as Fat Willy’s in 2012 and worked there for several years together.
“It’s particularly special and sentimental to us for many reasons, so to say we’re excited is an understatement!” Erica says.

Most of the dishes at The Parlay Kitchen + Cocktails are made from scratch and, as Erica notes, feature their own take on elevating classic comfort food.
Some of the tasty choices that are currently especially popular with diners include the Spicy Charred Edamame, Ahi Salad, Short Ribs Over Risotto, Poblano Salmon, and the Crispy Chicken Platter, made with trimmed chicken tenders breaded in the house recipe flour.
“I am told often that our chicken tenders are amazing, and as a mom with two kids who eat them often, I am told that our tenders are the best,” Erica says. “Our spinach and artichoke dip is made from scratch and is another one of my favorites, along with our brisket burgers. There is definitely something for everyone.”
The Parlay also features an extensive wine list, several draft beers, and a variety of crafty and fun delicious cocktails and mocktails at affordable prices.
Looking back, Erica says she and Kyle are definitely happy with their decision to open their own restaurant.
“I am very thankful for Kyle and what we’ve been able to build together. We are a great team at the end of the day,” Erica says.
The couple is also delighted by the positive response they have received from the community about their third location.
“It seems that the neighborhood is excited! We know that we will be a great fit for that spot, and we’re excited to bring The Parlay Kitchen + Cocktails to South Chandler to provide more friends and family with our awesome environment and atmosphere.”

Since the store opened in December 2023, it has attracted a growing stream of shoppers who are eager to check out the vast selection of unique items.
“We carry so many popular products people already love like Pocky and KitKat, but we also want to introduce people to the more unique stuff that's harder to find anywhere else,” says CY Kwok, general manager of TESO Life. “For example, in our food and beverage section, we have exotic flavored chips like Kobe beef, BBQ lamb, and real matcha powder from Japan.”
Some of the store's most unique items include those Kobe beef potato chips, as well as low-calorie konjac jelly snacks, and soft-serve ice cream made in Hokkaido, Japan, Kwok says.
“We believe there is truly something for everybody, no matter their age or interests. Beyond food, we also have new releases of Japanese toys and blind boxes that are really popular with teenagers, viral beauty products you see all over TikTok, and really useful home gadgets,” Kwok says.

SOUTHERN STYLE GOULASH
WELCOME HARVEST WITH THIS SIMPLE SOUP RECIPE
HistoryToday.com explains that goulash is a beefy soup that originated in the barren beauty of the Hungarian plains during the ninth century. The dish was prepared by Hungarian Cowboys who spent months roaming the vast expanses of Eastern Europe on horseback while tending to their cattle. A lifestyle of sleeping under the stars calls for simple meals. Such soups spread throughout Europe and later across the world.
Though the soup is intimately linked with Hungarian culture, my
grandmother created a Southernstyle version. To make supper time feel fancy, she embellished this easy weeknight meal by describing it as a special recipe from Hungary. She was known to stretch the truth with her imaginative tales, but she was right about this recipe’s origin.
Goulash is a quick, economical dinner with robust tomatoes and macaroni noodles for any working mom to whip up on a whim.
INGREDIENTS
• 1 Pound Cooked Ground Beef
• 1 Yellow Onion Diced
• 4-5 Russet Potatoes Peeled and Cut into Cubes
• 1- 28 Ounce Can of Whole Tomatoes
• 1 Cup Elbow Macaroni Noodles
• Salt and Course-Ground Black Pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat a lightly greased pot or Dutch oven over medium heat.
2. Add the ground beef and brown.
3. Drain off any liquid or grease. Return to pot or Dutch oven to heat.
4. Add in onion, potatoes, tomatoes, salt and pepper.
5. Cover with water and boil. Stir occasionally, add more water as needed and until potatoes are cooked.
