“MOM!”
That’s probably the word I hear most used daily. While it’s often followed by “What’s for dinner?” “Can you drive me to (insert a multitude of locales here)?” or “Have you seen (insert a multitude of objects here)?”, it’s also a word I cherish. I love being a mom (well, except for the 2 a.m., “MOM! I don’t feel well …” whispered in my ear, of course).
One of the things I love most about being a mom is that I get to help influence my children’s lives and guide them as they grow up.
Of course, sometimes they teach me more than I teach them. A perfect case in point is our dog, Icy (I’ll get to the name later!). It was not long after our first family pup passed that the kids—then ages 4 and 6—started asking for another. I didn’t think I was ready. My kids and husband were.
Off to the shelters we went, me humoring them. But of course, they all found one they fell in love with. I was outnumbered.
And so Icy came home with us, quickly taking her place in the family. Over the years, she has been there for all of us and taught us all so much. The kids learned compassion, how to take care of a living being, and had a confidant when they wanted to share their emotions with someone beyond a parent.
Of course, Icy is now my beloved fur child, and I can’t imagine life without her. I am thankful for her every day. She’s the sweetest, most loving dog and a huge part of our family.
Which brings me to this issue—welcome to our Kids & Pets Issue, where we focus on kid- and pet-themed stories. Read about a youth to watch, money ideas, a pet rescue product, child-inspired play areas, and more.
Enjoy … and if you’re interrupted by someone yelling, “MOM” or "DAD," just smile and be thankful for the wonderful beings in your life.
P.S. I promised the story! On the day we adopted our dog, my son looked at her and said she looked like an icicle because she was white and tan, so we should call her Icy. My daughter agreed. Since they were actually agreeing on something (you get me, parents, right?!), Icy she became!

CHANDLER TEEN SHARES HIS LOVE FOR COMPETITION & COURT PLAY
PROVIDED
“I drill and practice at least five days a week.”
Pickleball has taken the world by storm, and courts and centers are popping up everywhere. The sport has become popular for adults and youth alike, including 15-year-old Chandler resident Wil Shaffer.
Shaffer was recently featured on season 6 of All Around Champion , a competition show that featured 11 youth athletes from different sports competing against one another and coaching their sports to each other.
"Along with a special guest pickleball pro, I coached the other contestants," he says. "Then, for the other 10 weeks, I learned and competed in their sports. Some of the other sports were MMA, ice dancing, and teqball!"
For Shaffer, while pickleball wasn’t his first foray into sports, it has become an important part of his life.
“I was a competitive gymnast for years before I ever heard of pickleball,” he says. “During the pandemic, a friend
introduced us to pickleball. We started playing in our backyard. Then, when the local parks opened, I started going with my family. There I met some fantastic players who took me under their wings to teach me how to play better. I entered my first tournament and won second place. From there, I was hooked.”
Shaffer not only plays locally, but he gets to travel all over the country for tournaments—which of course takes a lot of commitment.
“I work out at Pickleball Sports Performance,” he shares. “Coach Ty Woody helps me with strength and conditioning to get better at the game and remain injury-free. I drill and practice at least five days a week, and I work with a sports psychologist to keep my mental game strong.”

Love of music typically begins for people at a young age and can evolve as you grow. For Chandler
Preparatory Academy senior Manasa
Subramanian, her love of one certain
Recently, Subramanian was able to take her musical talents on the road for an amazing trip touring India.
The young performer spent much of her winter break earlier this year there,
type of music has taken her on travels all over the world.
Subramanian has been singing Carnatic music—an ancient form of classical music from South India—since she was very young. This style of music is something that she has been around all of her life.
“Carnatic music was first introduced to me by my mother, Usha Ramachandran. She learned the style when she was my age, and continues to teach and promote the art form in Chandler,” she says.
Subramanian says from the beginning of her musical roots, she has found deep inspiration in her music.
“Carnatic music helps me feel more connected to my rich cultural background. It inspires me that I can continue to build on what has been around for thousands of years,” she says.
where she performed 12 shows in just 16 days. She performed in grand concert halls, and one of the highlights of the tour was a performance at a renowned hall in New Delhi, where she performed in front of a huge audience, sharing her soul-stirring renditions of Carnatic music.
Subramanian shares that, through her travels, she has grown to love the beauty of being able to connect with different people and share her music with them.
“Some of my fondest memories include singing and getting to interact with senior citizens and doing concerts in support of underprivileged and disabled children and senior citizens. It is always a joy to know I can brighten someone’s day with my music.”
Why Do I Need To See An Oral Surgeon?
While oral surgeons and dentists are trained to care for your oral health, oral and maxillofacial surgeons undergo an additional four years of training after dental school to specialize in surgery. This extra training gives oral surgeons the ability to perform complex procedures that dentists cannot do.
An oral surgeon is trained to handle complex cases that require surgery, such as: Impacted Wisdom Teeth | Dental Implants | Corrective Jaw Surgery Fractures And Lacerations | Oral Pathology | Wisdom Teeth Removal

Kim Stoegbauer of The TomKat Studio Shares Perfectly Designed Kid Spaces
When we asked Kim Stoegbauer of The TomKat Studio (TheTomKatStudio.com) about sharing amazing kids spaces her team has designed, she knew exactly which project she wanted to show us.
“This project immediately came to mind,” says the Chandler-based interior designer and real estate agent.
The clients, pro baseball player Kirby Yates and his wife, Ashlee, had just purchased a new home and brought in the TomKat team to furnish and style it. The scope included designing bedrooms and a playroom for their young children.
The project was led by designers Serena Gonzalez and Jennifer Pyzel.
The girl’s bedroom was designed in soft boho style and features a corner tent, which creates a cozy reading nook. Textural accents like the tiered yarn pendant light, woven baskets, and pillows add to the boho style. The wallpaper with tiny hearts finishes off the sweet space.
The boy’s bedroom features an “under the sea” theme, complete with charming wallpaper featuring waves, a macrame fish wall hanging, and custom art with a sea-inspired quote.
In the playroom, vibrant colors fill the space, meticulously planned to maximize enjoyment in every corner. A swing chair offers a cozy nook for reading, while a modular sofa provides flexibility for movie nights or naps. This room is thoughtfully arranged for optimal playtime fun.

“For those who love pets, this is a wonderful setup that saves the hassle of washing your furry friends outdoors or in your own shower.”
At this Chandler home, keeping pets clean is easier than usual, thanks to this special pet wash station.
The design feature was an option from builder Toll Brothers when the home was built, and the owners included it in the laundry room near the door to the outside yard— which allows easy access for outside dry time if needed (or for a dirty pet to head straight from outside to this station!).
The home was recently sold by real estate agent Lisa Ryan Whyte, who shares that “not every model had it as a standard feature, and the current homeowners were thrilled when they toured the house and it was already installed. The laundry room was the most logical space because it’s already considered a ‘wet space’ with tile on the floor everywhere. The builder offered the pre-plumb of the shower faucet, so it was an easy decision for the owners to have the dog shower installed with the builder.”
The wash station is completely tiled, and the shower faucet can be held for easy washing. The water temperature can be adjusted as needed.
“For those who love pets, this is a wonderful setup that saves the hassle of washing your furry friends outdoors or in your own shower. It’s a small space, so it makes for easy cleanup,” says Whyte ( RyanWhyteTeam.com).
The Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association (ALECA) was founded to bring together canine handlers across Arizona for the Desert Dog K9 Trials & Public Safety Expo. Now in its 21st year, this event has evolved into a significant public engagement and entertainment occasion. Through the support of sponsors, ALECA has expanded its mission to include top-tier training for law enforcement and the provision of life-saving medical and safety equipment for both canines and officers.
“The support we provide to our member agencies is vast,” says Tony Sanborn, president, ALECA. “We assist agencies in purchasing canines, paying for their training, buying medical equipment, and equipment for their vehicles. And of course, we provide ongoing rigorous training of our professional law enforcement K9 teams out there. Many don’t realize it takes years in the field before officers are invited to become K9 handlers. It’s intense, rugged duty, so our ongoing training is critical.”
ALECA also, with the support of Circle K, developed the Handler Trauma Kit (HTK). Designed to be worn under the vest, the HTK ensures handlers are always prepared for emergencies. The kit includes tools to manage common canine injuries, such as cactus needle removal and opioid ingestion. Over 400 kits have been distributed throughout Arizona, with plans for at least 120 more each year.
The HTK has gained attention for its effectiveness, leading to requests for similar kits for family pet emergencies.
Sanborn says the organization’s biggest impact on public safety and the community has been the Desert Dog K9 Trials (this year’s event will be held Oct. 26-27 at WestWorld of Scottsdale).
“Thanks to our four-legged partners, the general public is keenly curious about all we do. We make more connections and build more bonds and public trust in that one weekend than any event all year,” says Sanborn. “It is the marquee event in Arizona for public safety appreciation. We’re proud of the results and feedback received from the thousands of guests who attend each year.”

AS AN ALECA-TRAINED OFFICER HANDLER, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY YOU BELIEVE YOU’VE BEEN ABLE TO IMPACT THE COMMUNITY?
The best way I am able to impact the community is by being able to effectively switch between both extremes of the profession— going from tracking down violent felons while holding nothing but a leash to being Officer Friendly later in the day because a little kid wants to see my police doggie.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU TRAIN EVERY DOG TO DO?
Every Chandler K9 is trained in patrol work, which includes searching for suspects in open areas and buildings, searching for items, trailing suspects, and apprehensions, which involves biting and holding a suspect until officers can arrest the suspect.
HOW OLD IS THE AVERAGE POLICE K9? AND HOW OLD MUST THEY BE TO START?
Working K9s at Chandler Police Department have ranged in age from 2 ½ to almost 12 years old. The current average age of K9s at Chandler Police Department is 8 years old—we have three K9s, a 10-year-old, a 6-year-old, and a 3-year-old. New K9s start their police career between 2 ½ and 3 years of age.
HOW MANY ACTIVE POLICE K9S ARE ON DUTY IN CHANDLER?
Chandler Police Department currently has five handler-K9 teams. Three are trained to detect four different drugs (methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl) and two are trained to detect explosives. All are trained in patrol work.

Stackin Weight Precious Metals is a prestigious establishment specializing in the purchase and sale of precious metals, coins, bullion, collectibles, and a wide range of valuable items. Here, we chat with CEO Bren Blanchette to find out why investing in precious metals is a smart choice.
FIRST, HOW DID YOU GET INTO THIS BUSINESS?
I passionately got into the business during the global financial crisis of 2007/2008, as I watched most of my assets plummet in value while gold and silver skyrocketed.
MANY PEOPLE WANT TO SAVE FOR THEIR KIDS. HOW CAN INVESTING IN PRECIOUS METALS HELP?
Precious metals are a perfect way to save for kids. Precious metals are a hedge against inflation and a protection of wealth. Kids love gold and silver, and it’s a great way to teach them about assets/investing.
For example, if you have $2,000 in gold and $2,000 in cash and put it under your mattress and leave it there for 20 years, the gold will have more buying power, the cash will have less.
WHERE SHOULD SOMEONE UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS KIND OF INVESTING BEGIN?
The best way to begin is to give me a call or stop by the shop! I can help you invest in precious metals by understanding your goals, why you want to invest, how long you plan to invest, and then help finding the best strategy for you.
CAN PEOPLE BOTH PURCHASE FROM YOU AND SELL TO YOU?
Yes. We buy, sell, and trade. Our company takes pride in making purchases or liquidating easy, fast, and friendly.
WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE OR VALUABLE ITEM YOU’VE COME ACROSS?
A 112 oz. gold bar from the SS Central America that sunk in 1857, valued at $250k. That bad boy got my blood pumping!
As a local, family-owned business, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service and a refined, elegant shopping experience. Our dedication to quality and personalized attention ensures that every client feels valued and appreciated.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”
Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”
Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.
“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.
• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it, but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.
• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm—those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.
• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.
• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.
Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.
• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.
• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.
• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.
• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.

Thanks to twin brothers Rusty and Ryan Tussing, more pets will be prevented from dying in a house fire.
As Rusty explains, Ryan, an Avondale fire captain, has seen too many tragic endings to beloved pets who were not located in a house fire—mainly because responders didn’t know they were inside or they couldn't be rescued in time.
In an effort to prevent pet deaths from fires, the Tussings—who are devoted dog owners themselves –developed Rescue Retriever, the only smoke detector for pet rescue.
When Rescue Retriever is activated by smoke, the paw shaped device emits a powerful strobing light.
“This is a signal for first responders that a pet is in the home and where to search first for rapid rescue,” Rusty notes, adding that Rescue Retriever can be used for all kinds of pets, including cats, dogs, snakes, ferrets, birds, and hamsters.
The Rescue Retriever gives pet owners the ability to help firefighters locate their pets faster in an emergency situation.
Having a Rescue Retriever will significantly increase the odds that firefighters will be able to find the pets during a house fire.
“Every year, over 40,000 pets die in house fires. We are on a mission to change that statistic,” Rusty says.
