Here's to Style
There’s something about fall. Even though it’s still hot here in the Valley, the searing heat has broken (typically, anyway!) and there’s the promise of change in the air—cooler weather, the upcoming holiday season, and of course, new fashions.
In keeping with that, September is always our Style Issue.
Style is an interesting concept. Not only does it influence the fashions that we wear, but it influences every aspect of our lives. From the way we decorate our homes to the music we listen to and from the books we read to the way we carry ourselves in conversations, style permeates every facet of our existence. It is the thread that weaves together the tapestry of our lives.
Style is deeply personal. And it evolves as we celebrate our quirks, our passions, and our desires. Style is a form of self-expression that communicates who we are, how we perceive the world, and what we value. In this way, style becomes a powerful tool for connection, as it enables us to find common ground with others who share our aesthetic sensibilities.
As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Chandler to uplift your spirits, boost your productivity, and ignite your creativity.
In fact, in this issue, we showcase design expert and Emmy-nominated TV host Bobby Berk, who partnered with homebuilder Tri Pointe Homes to design two of its model homes at Treeland; the little black dress; a local cosmetics brand; a hat maker; a new restaurant; a stylish home; and more.
What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on Earth can duplicate.
Here’s to being uniquely—and stylishly—you!
Yours,

WHO YOU WORK WITH MATTERS
My wife and I have bought and sold several homes in the last 30 years and Cathy has been the best Real Estate agent that we have met! She always looked out for our interest, was patient and never pushed us to buy any home. She even discouraged us from buying some of the homes that we saw since she did not think it was the best use of our money. We are very grateful to her for ensuring we got the best home. DESERAE N.

A Model Design of
ACCLAIMED DESIGN EXPERT AND HOST BOBBY BERK DESIGNS TWO OF TRI POINTE HOMES, INC.'S MODEL HOMES AT TREELAND
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE GLICKSMANDesign expert and Emmy-nominated TV host Bobby Berk—you may have seen him on Netflix’s Queer Eye partnered with homebuilder Tri Pointe Homes to design two of its model homes at Treeland, the new 26-acre planned community in Chandler. Located on the former site of a plant nursery, Treeland is anticipated to deliver a total of 86 homes upon completion. The single-family homes are expected to range from 2,427 to 3,200 square feet, with three to four bedrooms.
The model at 1427 E. Cherrywood Place is Berk’s Southwest Contemporary model and is 2,805 square feet, while the Mid-Century Farmhouse is 2,427 square feet.
Treeland will also have several community spaces, including parks, ramadas, and a playground.
We caught up with Berk to talk about Treeland, design trends, and what’s on the horizon for him.
YOU’VE WORKED WITH TRI POINTE HOMES FOR MANY YEARS, HELPING DESIGN MODEL HOMES FOR MANY OF THEIR COMMUNITIES. YOUR LATEST WAS THE
CHANDLER TREELAND COMMUNITY. WHAT DID YOU DO AT TREELAND?
It was a great pleasure to design two model homes at Treeland, my third community design collaboration with Tri Pointe Homes Arizona in the southern part of the Valley. In bringing the Bobby Berk aesthetic to the Chandler market, we wanted to create something unique that would still appeal to a broad audience.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE EACH OF THE DESIGNS AND MERCHANDISE THOSE TWO MODELS WOULD INCORPORATE?
The design goal for the two model homes at Treeland was to combine universal appeal and fresh, engaging aesthetics through Southwest Contemporary and MidCentury Farmhouse styles. Southwest Contemporary brings a touch of modernity with a high-contrast scheme offering tailored architectural details and clean lines juxtaposed with curved forms, rustic woods, casual fabrics and linens, and textural rugs and materials. The tailored Mid-Century Farmhouse style offers a surprising twist,
combining vibrance with farmhouse elements to honor Chandler’s agrarian past.

HAVING BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE TREELAND PROJECT, WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES IT SPECIAL?
Connection and balance. You can’t help but feel inspired by the land, the former site of a plant nursery. Even before they experience Treeland’s homes and elevated designs, customers feel so much natural appeal with the community gardens, green spaces, and beautiful towering palm trees.
And there’s a special, multi-layered balance at Tri Pointe Homes’ lifestyle community: homes with broad appeal, the blend of rustic charm with contemporary living, how the architecture invites a strong indoor/ outdoor connection, the plant nursery heritage and the desert, and the juxtaposition of a resplendent refuge that is conveniently connected to a thriving and vigorous local market, and all the attractions that the greater Valley has to offer.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST REALIZE YOU WERE INTERESTED IN DESIGN?
My interest began at a really young age, actually. I was 5 years old and wanted to redecorate my room. I took my birthday money and bought blue sheets and curtains that I knew would match a blue-toned dinosaur poster I had hanging on the wall. I can remember how excited I was to “design” my own space and the feeling of satisfaction and joy that came with it.
THAT PIVOTAL MOMENT WHEN YOU DECIDED TO LAUNCH BOBBYBERK.COM—WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JUST GO FOR IT?

I spent the first six years of my career working for a number of different home decor retailers. And over that time, the
retail world gave me incredibly valuable experience and relevant training. I felt like I was ready to branch out on my own, and things just happened to fall into place for me to create my own e-commerce site.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ITEM OR LOCALE YOU’VE DESIGNED TO DATE?
My favorite would probably have to be the Bobby Berk Headquarters and office, which we just finished earlier this year. It was a total gut renovation of a 1970s Spanish-style home, and it gave my team and me the chance to really create a space we loved, and choose design elements that were a true reflection of our taste and needs. It's also just very rewarding to work every day in a space you created—and put so much blood, sweat, and tears into it.
“When you follow what feels right, and what makes you feel good, you end up with something great.”
WHEN WAS THE MOMENT YOU FELT YOU “MADE IT” IN YOUR CAREER?
There are really two moments for me. One would be when I transitioned from retail and launched my own bespoke design firm in 2015. And the other would be when Queer Eye premiered in 2018 and took my career to a new level.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT DESIGN FOR YOU?
Great design is about so much more than just what goes into a room or how it looks. For me, it’s about creating a space that is a true reflection of its inhabitants— and is always guided by someone’s unique and specific instincts. When you follow what feels right, and what makes you feel good, you end up with something great.
TO JUMP TO ONE OF YOUR OTHER VENTURES … DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE QUEER EYE EPISODE?
A favorite episode, and one that really affected me the most, was Season 2, “God Bless Gay.” The hero, Mama Tammye, was one of the most loving and warm people I have ever met. Experiencing her outpouring of pure kindness brought me to tears more than once. I was so thankful I got to meet her, help bring her church community center to life, and be inspired by her big heart (and big hugs).
OK, FOR DESIGN … WHAT IS THE WORST DESIGN TRENDS YOU’VE SEEN?
I try not to really follow trends, but if I had to pick one, I would say faux finishes. This trend started years ago and has trickled down into every area of home decor. There are definitely ways to do it right (and sparingly), but I say going with the real thing is always the better choice.
THE BEST?
I’m loving all the natural materials that are popping up in everything from furniture to lighting to accessories. Woven fibers like jute, rattan, and cane, as well as bamboo and natural wood, really add that organic touch that I think every space needs. Also, it’s great to see so many sustainable options available in design, including my line of rugs from Karastan that includes designs made from recycled water bottles!
WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING, WE’D FIND YOU …
When I’m not working, I just want to be at home, relaxing with my husband Dewey, and our dog Bimini!
AND LASTLY, WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU?
I am very excited about the recently announced multiyear design collaboration with Tri Pointe Homes that continues our more than eight-year relationship

nationally, but most importantly will expand our wonderful, winsome combination of premium lifestyle homes and elevated designs, including a new set of design-forward interior collections ranging in style from organic modern to luxe bohemian. And expansive it will be, as the fourth quarter kickoff off for this collaboration with Tri Pointe Homes will range from California to the Carolinas!
All told, customers can look for my designs and merchandising in over 20 Tri Pointe model homes per year, allowing them to experience integrated, whole-home designs in person. From coast to coast, they will be able to choose between move-in ready, turnkey homes with my interiors or the option to personalize a Berk design in the company’s award-winning Design Studios.
Beyond that, I am also very excited about my very first book , Right At Home: How Good Design Is Good For The Mind, which will be coming out on Sept. 12! It’s been something that I’ve been working on for over three years and will focus on the intersection of mental wellness and interior design and how by being considerate to the things that you bring into your spaces you can better your life and your mental health in so many ways.

LOCAL COSMETICS BRAND ACHIEVES SUCCESS
Whats Up Beauty and Nails Features Non-Toxic, High Quality, and Fashion-Forward Cosmetics and Nail Art Products

Alena Monson’s love of cosmetics began when she was a young girl growing up in Minsk, Belarus.
“I can remember as young as 6 playing with my mom’s eyeshadows and my older sister painting my nails,” Monson says, adding that as a teenager, she continued to enjoy all types of cosmetics.

“I thought I was great at makeup, but my whole world turned upside down in 2012 when I moved to the United States when I was in my 20s.”
Feeling overwhelmed by the vast selection of products and brands that were now available to her, Monson turned to the internet for help.
CONTINUED >

“It took me watching quite a few makeup tutorials to even figure out what to buy and how to wear it, that it almost felt like I was starting over at 6 again,” she says.
Inspired by the tutorials, Monson decided to start her own social media account on Instagram, which now has over 390,000 followers.
While Monson’s knowledge about cosmetics improved, she still faced challenges in one area: how to do nail art at home.
“I could not find the right tools locally, and online stores were hit or miss with quality and usability,” she says, adding that these experiences inspired her to design and sell her own line of nail stencils.
The stencils were so popular with customers that in 2014, Monson decided to start her own company and brand called Whats Up Beauty and Nails, and expanded her inventory to include nail polishes.
In 2021, she expanded her brand again into cosmetics by adding eyeshadow palettes with coordinating nail polishes.
As Monson’s business grew online, she opened a pickup location for locals in her warehouse.
“The small showroom in our warehouse had moderate success, so I knew it was time to open the onestop-shop I had previously been looking for,” she says.
Monson achieved her goal when she opened Whats Up Beauty and Nails at Chandler Fashion Center.
She sells all of her products at her store, including the newest additions, a collection of eyeshadow brushes and a mascara called Watch Me!
Monson says she enjoys speaking with her customers, who she says are very savvy when it comes to what they are putting on their skin and nails.
“Cosmetics consumers are smart, and they read ingredient lists and demand better from their products, and it is driving a demand for clean, non-toxic,
sustainable, and cruelty-free ingredients,” she says, adding that customers are also eager to try “special effects” cosmetics including flash reflective polishes, and chrome and multi-chrome eyeshadow finishes.
“My products are right at the crossroads of these two trends, by mixing wearable colors and fun sophisticated finishes with cruelty-free and clean formulas to make great products people love,” she explains.
As for people who believe they can’t learn to do their own nails, and should only get professional manicures, Monson offers words of advice and reassurance.
“There is never a better time than now to do your own healthy groomed nails. There are so many resources and tutorials available online,” she says. “With some simple basics you can get started, and with consistency, you can grow long, strong natural nails for a fraction of the cost of going to a salon.”
People can ask Monson for advice via her Instagram (@ alena.monson) or visit the staff at the Chandler location.
Looking back, Monson is thrilled with her decision to launch her own line of beauty products and open her store.
“I love the creative process involved in making a great product, but I can’t compare anything else to the feeling I get watching happy customers use that product,” she says. “It’s great to see someone who absolutely loves something I made and run to tell the world about how it makes them feel beautiful and happy, on social media. The instant feedback you can receive today in business is astounding; even the fear of any negative feedback makes me a perfectionist and drives me to work harder every day.”
Whats Up Beauty and Nails is located in Chandler Fashion Center (by Bath & Body Works).

FROM COLLECTOR TO CREATOR
VALLEY HAT MAKER USES ARTISTRY AND PERSONALIZATION TO CREATE THE PERFECT FIT

No one is quite sure of the origin of hats, but some of the earliest depictions go back to ancient Egypt. Originally to keep people’s heads warm, hats eventually turned from practical to stylish.
For Valley resident Jono Gross, his affection for hats began with buying hats anytime he went on a trip or attended a special event.
“I was always buying hats to commemorate memorable experiences,” he says. “I can look at a hat and tell you the whole story of a trip, and where it’s gone. I have about 60 hats to date, and the obsession keeps growing.”
Soon, the obsession went beyond just owning to creating—maybe because it was in his heritage.
Generations before him were seamstresses and tailors, and nearly everyone in the family has a sewing kit, so the idea of making something of his own wasn’t hard. However, it was more about the artistry and craftsmanship behind the hat-making that really struck a chord.
“I started to go through the hats that I had to see how they were made and how artists made their different stitches. That is when I went on a quest to figure it out myself,” he says. “I would go to hatters around the country to support their businesses by buying a hat and seeing if there were any techniques they would share which would help me learn along the way.”
Gross also began watching videos to see if he could figure out all the tools he would need to get started.
“When I bought my first materials, it was such a cool feeling, and then I bought my first hat block, an important tool for making hats. After that, I bought an entire set from an estate sale and picked up vintage equipment from the 1940s,” he shares. “At first, I just kept making hats for myself because I wasn’t ready to put what I’d created out into the world.”
However, Gross kept working hard to perfect his process, and after a lot of trial and error, learned different ways of making hats that people would appreciate and love.
“I had a lot of fun experimenting with making hats—some of the best times for me—and it was feeding my soul to do this,” he says.
Currently, Gross’ shop and tools are in a trailer, which is where he measures, creates, and experiments. Hat-making is his creative outlet when he takes a break from running his marketing business. Rather than owning a storefront, Gross wants to create custom designs on the road, bringing his mobile hat shop to customers.
“I appreciate the whole design process, and I’m really looking forward to helping people get a hat that fits their head exactly right, as well as their personality and taste,” he says.
Some of Gross’ greatest accomplishments are creating hats with meaning. He takes great pride in the fact that they are custom-made, handstitched, and personalized.

Simply, he loves what he does.
“I tell people I want to make hats until the day I die, simply because I love it so much,” he says. His next steps include a new trailer, which will be more store-like in that it will be large enough to hold display racks with walls of hats both for purchase and to give customers an idea of the designs he can create.
Beyond his hats, Gross is known for one more thing—his mustache. He is ranked number one in the nation for it, winning Best In Show at the 2022 National Beard and Mustache Championship. He was wearing one of his custom-designed hats and the mustache as his look, Wildman, when he won, of course.

A WINNING COMBINATION
Jared Smith is a big car guy.
“I love waking up early on Saturdays, washing my car, and driving it to enjoy a good car club show,” says Smith. “However, I do not love that these events are usually in abandoned parking lots. Such gorgeous cars and camaraderie should have a proper place to be celebrated.”
Trophy Bar Caters to Men, Women, Gearheads, and Sports Fans Alike

Enter Russell Youngs, his longtime business partner in a media company, who was very involved in the Majerle Sports Grill locations across Arizona.
“Russell came to me with the idea of opening our own sports bar during the pandemic, and as conversations deepened, we imagined a space that welcomed car enthusiasts and sports fans alike,” says Smith. “We took more than 18 months to develop a concept that catered to both groups, as well as a third in women.”
While ladies certainly enjoy sports and cars in large numbers, Smith knows firsthand that many men often have partners or wives who prefer a good meal with a glass of wine over a casual sports bar experience.
“With Trophy Bar, which we opened this summer, we think we found a way to make everyone happy,” says Smith.

The space, located at 2551 W. Queen Creek Road in Chandler, is reminiscent of what a professional athlete’s garage or man cave might look like with high-end car- and sports-themed art installations in every direction. However, it does not feel like anything one might find at a chain restaurant or bar. There are mahogany stained woods and bold gold fixtures and navy accents inside that make everything feel very rich, almost as if at a country club. Coming soon? A well-misted patio.
There are also more than 30 televisions playing a combination of sports, car races, and even car-themed films, and cheeky
sayings related to both sports and cars displayed on walls to add a touch of whimsy.
“The menu is a nice blend of gastropub items like chicken wings, street tacos, and piled-high burgers combined with gluten-free dishes and stunning salads. We also feature a brick oven for authentic Neapolitan pizzas,” says Smith.

There are, of course, several beers available, but also an impressive list of wines, including Meomi, Charles Krug, Landmark, and Canyon Road. Trophy Bar also has a signature cocktail menu with nine types of margaritas, four types of mules, two types of martinis, and more.
“Finally, we are very proud to have Jeff Majerle, Dan Majerle’s brother who ran the Chandler Majerle’s for years, as our general manager,” Smith says.

THE little BLACK DRESS
ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES STYLIST: AMANI SKALACKIMost of us can say we have that one staple black dress that can be worn at any occasion, and the classic look is not only popular but is elegant and timeless. It is the dress in our closet that can be accessorized to fit the event and often is the dress we go back to time and again. It is one of the most versatile items we own, never goes out of style and looks good on anyone. But how did this classic look originate?
Prior to the 1920s, black was reserved for funeral wear, but when Coco Channel made the bold move to print a short, black dress on the cover of Vogue in 1926, all of that changed. The popularity of the black dress skyrocketed, and it became one of the most influential pieces of clothing. Chanel transported fashion from tight corsets and bustles to straightlined silhouettes. Because of its affordability, black remained a popular choice during The Great Depression. The black dress had another boom in popularity when “Breakfast at Tiffany’s’’ debuted, and Audrey Hepburn showcased her iconic black dress with long, black gloves. Today, people accessorize the black dress to fit any occasion.
We enlisted the help of stylist, Amani Skalacki, to show us how versatile the little black dress can be.
THE POPULARITY OF THE BLACK DRESS SKYROCKETED and IT BECAME ONE

OF THE MOST influential PIECES OF CLOTHING.

“We usually think of the little black dress as a piece you wear to an event. However, because black is so flattering on all body types and skin tones, women have multiple black dresses from casual to evening,” Amani says. “I selected this collection of dresses to show the versatility of the black dress and to give women some new ideas of how to wear the evening gown with a train on a night out with her girlfriends or the traditional summer strappy maxi dress while running errands in cooler temperatures.”

Although black is a timeless, classic look, that doesn’t mean it goes without personality. You can make it your own style by accessorizing to infuse new life into a dress that you already own.

“A sequin dress can be dressed up with heels, or that same dress can be transformed into a casual outfit with the addition of tennis shoes and an oversized blazer or a denim jacket. Transform that strappy dress you have been wearing all summer into an outfit that is perfect for chilly fall temperatures. Add a narrow scarf, a leather jacket and sandals or a tall pointy boot, and you have a whole new look for an evening out,” Amani adds.
If you have a dress in the back of your closet that you haven’t worn in years, don’t be afraid to dust it off and give it new life. “Take that evening gown you wore years ago to a tailor for a little transformation. Turn it into a high low dress-top that can be worn out with girlfriends or on a date night. Pair the top with leather leggings, ankle boots, a chunky belt and some statement jewelry, and now you have a piece that pushes the boundaries of the little black dress.”
Are you looking for the best cut or style of dress that works best for your body type? Amani provided this simple guide:
HOURGLASS FIGURE:

Charity Spotlight: Clothes Cabin
Clothes Cabin Helps Provide Clothing to Those in Need
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDEDIn 2009, Caryn Shoemaker and Kay Pratt founded a nonprofit called One Small Step to help provide clothing relief to people who couldn’t afford to buy the pants, shirts, socks, shoes, and other clothing they needed.
When the friends learned the only clothing bank in the area had closed, they launched Clothes Cabin to offer the same types of services.

As Amanda Nosbisch, executive director of One Small Step and Clothes Cabin notes, the clothing bank offers clothing assistance to anyone in need.
“All clothing is free, and individuals and families are welcome to come every three months for assistance,” Nosbisch says, adding that dignity, kindness, and respect are cornerstones to the program, and the clothing must meet high standards of quality.
Clothes Cabin also does community outreach where clothing and resources are brought into communities, programs, and partner locations where need is high, and transportation to the Clothes Cabin location is challenging.
“Examples of our community outreach partners are community resource fairs, local school events, and other agency outreach events.”
People who would like to help support Clothes Cabin may do so in many ways, Nosbisch says.
First, people can donate money to One Small Step, which is a registered 501(c)(3) and a Qualified Arizona Tax Credit Organization.
“Donations of money support our basic operations, but also allow us to source essential items in bulk like undergarments, socks, and children’s school clothing and shoes,” Nosbisch says, adding that volunteers are also always needed in direct service and behind the scenes.
Using social media and word of mouth to spread awareness about Clothes Cabin is also helpful, as are donations of new or gently used clothing.

“People can follow us on social media and our website to see our current high-needs items,” Nosbisch says.
