Welcome to 2023! I don’t know about you, but there’s something about a new year that feels like the first day of school to me. It’s a clean slate ahead that’s filled with possibilities.
I don’t make resolutions (I mean, how many times can I promise myself that I’m going to finally go to the gym or stop eating desserts or that I’m really going to make time to clean out those closets?!), but I do take time to stop and reassess.
It’s like those reminders I set in my phone that remind me to do something … oh, it’s a new year? Ding! Time to do XYZ.
Often, the turning of a new year is when I remind myself to be more mindful in my actions and not get so caught up in just my day-to-day to-do list.
If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy some of the health and mindfulness-focused stories we have in this issue.
Staying away from alcohol? Check out the fabulous mocktails that were created locally. Ready to make your home healthier? Check out the suggestions in our healthy home story. We also share the story of a doctor dedicated to changing patients’ lives, a teacher who is inspiring his students to be healthier, and we talk about how to recharge and relax.
I hope you enjoy this issue and wish you the very best in 2023!

When we think about being healthy in the new year, we think of exercise and nutrition, and we tend to overlook how much our environment affects us in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Our homes are where we spend most of our time, so it’s crucial to figure out how to create a comfortable and healthy home. Here are some simple steps you can take in the new year to ensure you’re living green and clean.
The first step to clean living is to make sure you’re breathing clean air. More than 80% of our lives are spent indoors, and improving that indoor air quality will drastically impact your quality of life. This purified air will improve allergy symptoms by reducing dust and trapping allergens like pet dander and dust mites.
You can avoid the harmful side effects that come with using chemical-based cleaning supplies. It’s easy to create your own cleaning products at home using products that most of us have lying around the house. Essential oils, vinegar, baking soda, soap, and water can be combined to create effective and healthy products for the home. If you don’t want to DIY your cleaning products, then look for products that are plant-based and non-toxic.
We have heard time and again that clutter creates stress in the home. A cluttered or dirty home can cause us to feel overwhelmed. Start small by keeping flat surfaces like counters and tables cleared off. It’s easy to build off of that and tackle other spaces that need decluttering. Keeping the chaos to a minimum will keep your stress levels down and create a peaceful home for everyone.
Many people begin the new year inspired to pursue clean diets and exercise plans. If you want to maintain that healthy lifestyle throughout the year, it’s a must to clear out the pantry of junk food and food with empty calories. It’s a temptation to keep this food in the home, so start fresh and rid your space of all processed junk food that will keep you from your health goals.
There are many benefits to planting a garden, including reducing stress levels and providing a great way to get exercise. If you don’t have an abundance of space in your yard, then start simple with a small box garden. You will reap the benefits of herbs and vegetables in the springtime when everything starts to bloom.
Choose a color palette that you like and paint the walls or find decor/accessories that lean into that color scheme, purchase artwork that is meaningful or hang photos of family or travel experiences that will boost your spirits when you see it, play soothing music or add a water element for soothing sounds, diffuse your favorite essential oils and create your own signature home scent, and bring in textures that you love for home accessories to cozy up your space.

Dr. Wissam Fayad Offers a Personalized Approach to Every Patient
Dr. Wissam Fayad founded VIA Health & Medspa in Chandler with one key goal in mind: That everybody should have the opportunity to feel confident and happy about both their mind and body. If you want to feel healthy, confident, beautiful, and empowered, this new local practice specializing in medical spa services and concierge medicine may be for you!
From the moment you enter the office, you will immediately recognize that VIA is unlike any other medical spa and physician’s office. From the upscale décor and furnishings to the warm welcome from the friendly staff to the cutting-edge equipment and patient rooms, no attention to detail was spared on making every individual feel special.
VIA, which stands for “Vein, Internal and Aesthetics,” offers cutting-edge technology through the guidance and care of a highly skilled and knowledgeable internal medicine physician who specializes in aesthetics, vein treatments and surgery, hormone therapy, and weight loss management.
“I feel strongly that people are beautiful both inside and out, and that the work I do complements each person’s strengths and unique qualities,” he says.
Whether you are interested in the spa services or concierge medicine, or both, every patient’s well-being is the priority of Dr. Fayad and his staff.
“Our Medspa services include all aspects of non-invasive and invasive aesthetic services and treatments for the face and body,” he says.
Those include Morpheus8 Microneedling with radio frequency, laser resurfacing, non-surgical facelifts, PDO thread lifts, acne treatments, face contouring, body contouring, liposuction, fillers, neurotoxins, IV drips, and cellulite reduction. PRP treatment for hair
loss and joint pain are also offered, along with both women’s and men’s wellness services.
VIA also offers the first Executive Concierge Medicine program in Chandler, providing luxury concierge medical care that focuses on preventative and proactive medicine for patients looking for the ultimate personal medical service.
“Our program is individually tailored to the needs of the patient, fitting their schedule and lifestyle with easy access to the physician. Same-day or next-day visits are available, as are telemedicine appointments,” he says.
Dr. Fayad, who has practiced medicine for over 24 years, originally had a very different career goal.
“I first wanted to become a pilot because I love to travel and learn about different cultures,” he shares. “Right before getting into college, I rethought my choices and found myself interested in the human body, diseases, and cures.”
After graduating from the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Faculty of Medicine in 1998, Dr. Fayad completed his residency at Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio and a fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California. He holds many professional certifications, licensures, and professional and society memberships, including Certification in Aesthetic Medicine and Cosmetic Surgery and Laser. He is also a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
Dr. Fayad continues his decades-long work in Yuma, Arizona, specializing in internal medicine, geriatrics, hospice, and pallative medicine. In addition to his work at VIA Health & Medspa, Dr. Fayad is affiliated with Yuma Regional Medical Center, Chandler Regional
Medical Center, and Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.
Life can be stressful for various reasons— and he understands this stress can impact how people look and feel. Whether the cause comes from family issues, lack of sleep, work, or simply the natural aging process, Dr. Fayad is passionate about educating and helping his patients feel their best for the long term. Their health needs are never far from his mind as he enjoys taking the time to get to know each individual, making sure that each and every one feels seen, heard, and encouraged—a rarity in modern-day medicine.
“VIA provides options aligned with your values and priorities, creating a true partnership that helps you feel incredible. Together, you and our team here at VIA can co-create an authentic, viable care plan, tailored to you and only you,” he says. “I am truly dedicated to my work and ensuring that everyone has a positive and healthy experience at VIA. Once patients have experienced VIA, they become part of our family.”

Krupski predicts that 2023 will be especially busy as more people than ever look for innovative approaches to their health and well-being.
“As the world is opening up again, I feel there has been a surge in the demand for health and wellness solutions—something that was too often neglected by people during the pandemic,” she says. “In many ways, massage has become medicine. Therapeutic massage and skin health treatments are no longer a luxury, but are now a proven method of self-care that leads to better health, pain management, and overall improvements to well-being.”
At MassageLuXe, Krupski and her team of licensed massage therapists and estheticians offer various types of massages and facials designed to help people feel and look better.
“Massage therapy can relieve stress and anxiety, which improves your mental health and well-being. Additionally, therapeutic massage provides pain management and relief for people suffering from numerous ailments and chronic conditions,”
“As the world is opening up again, I feel there has been a surge in the demand for health and wellness solutions—something that was too often neglected by people during the pandemic.”
If the holiday season has left you tired and stressed, and you are eager to start 2023 feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, Carissa Krupski is ready to help. The owner of MassageLuXe in Chandler shares her views on this year’s health and wellness advances—as well as how she can help at MassageLuXe.
she says. “As for our facials, they are customized to each person’s skin type and the results they are looking for.”
For example, most of the facials at MassageLuXe use a seaweed-based product called Repechage, which Krupski says is both gentle and effective.
“If you can get into the ocean, you can use these products,” she says. “We also have a Hydromassage table in a separate room, located near the lobby, for our clients to use before, after, or in between services. It is a water-filled mattress and has jets that are adjustable, so people can feel both the heat and pressure without having to get undressed.”
Recently, Krupski and her team added the HydraFacial and CBD facials to their lineup of services. Recent additions to massage include Himalayan stones and cold stones, as well as a CBD add-on.
“We are always on the lookout for the latest services and products to bring to our clients,” she says.
No matter which services her clients come in for, whether it’s a massage, facial, or waxing, Krupski says they will all get to experience MassageLuXe’s luxurious atmosphere, including spacious treatment rooms.
“One of the things that helps MassageLuXe to stand out is that we have a variety of providers in order to meet everyone’s needs,” she says, adding that she and her team are also devoted to offering outstanding customer service in a family atmosphere.
“We truly pride ourselves on delivering quality, consistent experiences with every service. I believe strongly that my team is the heart and soul of my business and what sets us apart from the competition.”
Ensuring clients are educated on the many benefits of massage therapy and skin care is also essential to Krupski and her team.
When they are finished with their appointment, Krupski says customers can enjoy shopping for skin care and other products to use and enjoy at home.
“We offer the Finchberry line of products, including soaps, salt soaks, bath balms, and hand lotions, as well as our CBD line, Plant Love. We also sell tiger balm, Biofreeze Professional Strength, and essential oils,” she says.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2023, Krupski says she is excited to continue to research and add to the number of quality services MassageLuXe offers.

COMPETING IN A 100K IS A BIG UNDERTAKING! WHAT LED YOU TO WANT TO DO THIS?
I have done other trail runs and triathlons and just wanted to test myself at a distance I had never tried before. The trail running community is a great group of people who just like to have fun, get outside, and experience new places. In the past few years, I’ve been able to do runs in Utah, Colorado, California, and Northern Arizona. As I get older, I am not getting any faster, so I may as well try and run further.
YOU’VE NOW INSPIRED YOUR STUDENTS TO DO THIS WITH YOU … CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW AND WHAT THEY’RE DOING?
I gave them two months to try and accumulate 100 kilometers on their own, either through walking, running, biking, or swimming. Whoever wanted to participate decorated their
own personal “runner” that I put on a wall inside our school. The students would turn in mileage slips, and I would move their “person” along the wall. There are mileage markers on the wall, as well, so they can track their progress. The project incorporates well with our character-building curriculum at our school. The students must show dedication to the miles. The tracking is all on the honor system so it builds trustworthiness. They must use time-management skills to get to the finish line. I have received a bunch of feedback from parents about how dedicated and responsible their kids have been in wanting to accomplish the challenge. And it keeps them active just for the sake of being active.
Being active is now just a regular part of my life and my family’s life. We are always looking to go do something somewhere, whether we are at home or on vacation. About 25 years ago, when I was more than 300 pounds, I didn’t do anything and felt cruddy all the time. Now, if there is a day where I don’t get out and do something, I don’t feel right. I need those endorphins from being active.
The kids at school definitely have taught me to keep things fun. During PE classes, we very rarely keep score or play to win. We really concentrate on the effort and the trying. So, I just try to remember that with every event I enter. Keep it fun, enjoy the journey, and see what you can accomplish.
Our club is all about building relationships with our members. Are you looking for an adrenaline rush, join us for a whitewater rafting trip. If you love the wintertime, we take a trip to Telluride for fresh powder rides. Are you one for
out on the lake, join us on a kayaking trip. Socializing is part of what makes the Village different.
(Actually, Coldest) Addition
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation.
The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity.
Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion.
In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery.
The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”
Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.”
Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep.
The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth.
You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.

In October of 2018, Brigid and John Hornacek opened Hornacek’s Golf in Chandler.
The store, which is located at 4975 S. Alma School Road, is stocked with virtually every item golfers need to enjoy a day out on the links.
From golf equipment and accessories—including tees, towels, and learning tools to apparel, club fittings, repairs, and golf lessons—Hornacek’s Golf is truly a one-stop-shop for golfers of all experience levels.
As Brigid notes, John founded the first Hornacek’s Golf store in Scottsdale in 1996. In addition to being co-owners of the Chandler location, the couple also owns two men’s clothing stores in Scottsdale and Phoenix: Scottsdale Men’s Shoppe and Carter’s Men’s Clothing.
“We opened Hornacek’s Golf simply because of our love of golf, and also because of our desire to work for ourselves,” Brigid says.
In addition to offering a wide range of golf equipment and accessories, Brigid says she and John enjoy getting to know their customers, many of whom have been shopping at Hornacek’s Golf since the first store opened.
“We are privately- and family-owned, and many of our customers have become like family, as well,” she says, adding that shoppers also enjoy getting to know the Hornaceks’ dogs, who come to work with them.
Brigid says she and John are thrilled with the way the Chandler community has embraced them and their business, and they anticipate celebrating many more years in Chandler.
“We are looking forward to continuing to grow, as well as expanding our brand offerings,” she says.

“Cathy Carter was my realtor for both buying a new place and selling my existing home. My home sold in one day! She updated me frequently and was always a pleasure to speak with. Cathy made it a seamless process. Her knowledge of Chandler and the East Valley is amazing. The contacts she has for things such as plumbing, electric, handyman, carpet cleaning and stretching, house cleaning, or anything else are impeccable. She knows someone for every need. She even scheduled the appointments for things I needed for my new residence. I highly recommend Cathy for any real estate needs!
