Putting together this magazine is always fun. I love my job. I love being involved with the community, learning its stories, and sharing those stories. Still, never do I love that more than when I get the opportunity to share stories of people who are working to make a difference in other people’s lives.
Welcome to our Thankful issue, where we include several stories on local nonprofits and companies that are giving back. Read about the Jaxon Foundation, Aquila Dental, the Assistance League of the East Valley, the East Valley Dream Center, and more.
Aren’t they inspiring?
Of course, we also share several other stories, such as the YoYoFactory; Patent 139 Brewing Co.; and the new nightclub in town, ClubTwentyThree01.
As for me, I’ll mark this season of gratitude as I’ve done the past few years—my daughter and I volunteer at various nonprofits around the Valley through National Charity League, and my son and I volunteer through Boys Team Charities.
There is so much to be thankful for—including the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is.
Here at Chandler City Lifestyle, we are also especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you.
This holiday season as we prepare to gather with our loved ones, let’s set time aside to consider what truly makes life meaningful.
Happy November!

FROM SCHOLARSHIPS TO FREE DENTAL CLEANINGS TO PROVIDING ASSISTANCE TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES, HELP IS HERE
ARTICLE BY ALISON STANTONJaxon Foundation was named for Jaxon Landfair, a Basha High School student who had dreamed of becoming a police officer. Jaxon was diagnosed with incurable leukemia and passed away in September 2019. While he was ill, Jaxon had been in contact with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, expressing his desire to start a scholarship program to help kids become police officers. In 2020, Jaxon’s parents started the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in his honor.
“Jaxon Foundation provides financial scholarships to young adults who wish to pursue careers in law enforcement,” says Brandon Ynclan, director of fundraising. “The Jaxon Foundation also provides law enforcement mentorship to our scholarship recipients. Having board members in law enforcement, we have an immediate connection into the law enforcement community to connect our recipients to officers in all different types of law enforcement roles.”

Since opening in Chandler 17 years ago, Aquila Dental has offered a number of free dental days that have been available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Patients have been able to get cleanings, fillings, and/or extractions at no charge.
On Nov. 11, the full-service dental practice is offering free dental services to veterans.
“Our office manager Kristine is a veteran, so that is why we decided to change it up this year,” says Clare Higgs, Aquila Dental’s marketing director.
“On Veterans Day, we will have our free dental day for veterans only, where they will call ahead of time to make an appointment for either a cleaning, filling, or extraction, and we will cover the bill.”

Assistance League of East Valley was founded 27 years ago as an all-volunteer chapter of a national organization. A small group of women had begun collecting clothing for needy schoolchildren, raising funds at rummage sales, and distributing clothing at Mesa elementary schools.
They opened their first thrift shop in 2002, moving to their current location at 2326 N. Alma School Road in 2017.
“Through our signature program, Operation School Bell®, we provided new school clothes, shoes, toiletries, and uniforms to 7,361 needy elementary school children this year,” says Marsha Calhoun, president-elect, adding that in the Chandler and Gilbert school districts, they provided 338 homeless teens with clothing, shoes, hygiene items, food, bus passes, and academic support.
“We also delivered over 3,800 assault survivor kits to local agencies with clothing, toiletries, and snacks for victims of trauma, accidents, or assault. And, we awarded 14 two-year college scholarships of $1,700 per year to graduates of East Valley Institute of Technology.”

Danny Gonzalez, Jovanni Cedeno, and Juan Zavala—two brothers and their friend—knew they wanted to make a positive impact on people’s lives. After surviving rough childhoods in their native Chicago, they hoped to make a change in the community around them.
The trio founded East Valley Dream Center with one mission in mind—to eradicate poverty through community outreach, free acts of service, and no-cost programs.
“We have MyBag, which allows families to request a specially-made bag, tailored specifically to their needs,” says Priscilla Cano, programs director, adding that the bag can be filled with cleaning products, household items, hygiene items, and/or food items.
“We also have MyMoney, which is our finance class, and MySports is our sports program that we host multiple times throughout the year, where kids come to build community and develop their sports skills.”

ClubTwentyThree01, an Upscale Nightclub, Features a Variety of Musical Genres
The City of Chandler is home to many types of businesses, including a variety of restaurants, retail shops, medical facilities, and an award-winning school district.
But as longtime Chandler residents Angela and Chuck Fazio noticed, Chandler was missing one key type of business: A high-end nightclub.
That recently changed when the Fazios opened ClubTwentyThree01 in early October.
The upscale, 21-and-over nightclub is currently open Thursdays from 8 p.m. to midnight, and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Angela notes, adding that Chuck has many years of experience working in nightclubs.
“The East Valley had nothing like ClubTwentyThree01, and we know how having a nightclub can be great for a community,” she says, adding that the club offers an electric ambiance.
“On Thursdays, our DJs are featuring different genres of music and themes for Ladies Night like Latin Night, Throwback Thursdays, and Country, and on Fridays and Saturdays we will feature more traditional club-style music.”
ClubTwentyThree01 also features an 8,000-square-foot patio with an upper deck. There are two VIP spaces available.
When hunger pangs hit, club-goers can choose from a variety of food, including sushi rolls, which are served until midnight.
“We are one of the only places in the East Valley to have food until midnight, and probably the only place for late-night sushi,” Angela says.
The Fazios, whose background is in real estate, own a number of businesses. They work for eXp Realty, running an international real estate group with almost 8,000 agents.
“We own The Forum Real Estate School, and we own The Forum, which is right next to the club and is a place for coffee, cocktails, and connections,” Angela says. “We do both corporate and private events; social events like comedy nights, happy hours, and live music; and soon, we’ll be the only place to get amazing coffee until midnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.”
When the Fazios decided to re-imagine their building in Chandler, they immediately envisioned transforming it into a lively gathering place with plenty of music and food.
The couple, who has called Chandler home for 18 years, made sure they had the correct business licenses in order before bringing their vision to life in the form of ClubTwentyThree01.
They were also careful to bring in a team of people who have worked in the industry.
“While we have not opened a nightclub before, we have hired a great staff with experience,” Angela says.
Angela says she and Chuck are thrilled with their decision to bring a high-end nightclub to Chandler and give people a place to mingle, dance, and have a great time.
They have also been delighted by the enormously positive response from the Chandler community.
“Our community is so excited. There just isn’t a place like ours in our area and it is an awesome place for people who are not wanting to travel far from their homes,” she says.
“ClubTwentyThree01 is also unique because of the variety of spaces it features—from the gorgeous outdoor patio and an amazing space to dance to an upscale lounge area. Our ambiance is incredible, we are close to the Chandler Airpark, and will offer valet parking.”
ClubTwentyThree01 is located at 2301 S. Stearman Drive.

PATENT 139 BREWING CO. PAYS HOMAGE TO THE FAMILY LEGACY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POPULARITY OF THE HASS AVOCADO
ARTICLE BY GEORGANN YARAWhen first-timers stroll in and spot the decor and menu dishes that boldly share a common denominator, it’s not unusual for them to pose a valid question.
“What is it with all of the avocado stuff around here?” says Tim Hass, owner of Patent 139 Brewing Co., with a chuckle. “Then, they flip the menu over and see our story.”
When Hass opened his Chandler brewery in January, it was a brick-and-mortar validation of his great-grandfather’s place in culinary and cultural history.
The fact that nearly every item on the menu incorporates the Hass avocado is not a gimmick. It’s a history lesson about this country’s most beloved avocado variety.
In the late 1920s, Pasadena postman Rudolf Gustav Hass decided to indulge his inner entrepreneur by growing avocado trees. He bought seeds from a farmers market believing they would become the popular Fuerte variety—a large bright green specimen that wowed with its smooth exterior and mango essence.
But when those trees yielded fruit that was smaller with rough black skin, Rudolf was stumped. Unsure what to do, he sold them at the farmers’ market. They were a huge hit.
“The Fuerte looked good but it had this hard interior. This has a creamy fattiness that people loved,” Hass says.
In 1935, Rudolf was granted the patent for the Hass Avocado, specifically U.S. Patent 139. Today, that variety represents 90% of all avocados sold worldwide.
Rudolf partnered with a local nursery and received 25 cents for every Hass Avocado tree sold, earning about $4,000 from this venture.
Prior to the 17-year patent renewal deadline, Rudolf passed away from a heart attack, and his place in avocado lore all but faded away. But When Hass’ grandfather died eight years ago and the family went through his belongings, they discovered his great-grandmothers’ written stories that documented his family’s tie to the avocado.
A veteran of the food and beverage industry, Hass decided to open a brewery that pays homage to his lineage. With Executive Chef Jared Martinez, he pushes the capabilities of the avocado’s talents in creative bites—its fat is used as a substitute for butter in the green buffalo sauce, the avocado’s natural subtle smokiness plays well in the in-house smoked feta and avocado dip, and the octopus starter gets a boost from an avocado salsa verde.
Avocados are even used instead of egg yolks to make an avocado crème brulée. And, the brewing of an avocado-infused Kolsch beer is a quarterly tradition.
If he were around today, what would the man responsible for introducing the Hass avocado to the world tell his great-grandson?
Hass says, “He’d look at me and be like, ‘I’m glad you’re taking something that’s part of our family history and putting it out there.’”

The City of Chandler is renowned for many reasons—it’s home to the annual Ostrich Festival, it’s won the “Most Playful City USA” award 11 times, it has a whopping 67 parks ... and it’s home to the nation’s largest yoyo factory.
In 2003, Hans Van Dan Elzen opened the YoYoFactory with Ben McPhee, a friend he met when he saw him yoyo-ing on a beach in Australia.
“We chose to open the factory in the area because there had been a huge yoyo culture here in the ’90s,” Van Dan Elzen says. “And I just wanted to make a better yoyo.”
Van Dan Elzen was born and raised in Michigan and moved to Arizona 27 years ago. He started yoyo-ing when he was 15 years old, and hasn’t stopped since. In fact, he holds a world record for the most yoyo tricks performed in a minute—a whopping 51!
“A friend of mine had a yoyo and I found I had a natural knack for it,” he said. “I’m not particularly good at sports, but for some reason, I just picked it up easily.”
Today the YoYoFactory is one of the biggest producers of yoyos in the world, it sponsors several yoyo competitions, and employs the top yoyo champions in the world as ambassadors for its products.
“Our ambassadors are social media stars and they are incredible, very skilled,” Van Dan Elzen says. “They get to travel the world getting paid to play and compete with our yoyos.”
Every year, the YoYoFactory sponsors and hosts the U.S. National Yo-Yo Contest held in Mesa. The event is one of the biggest of its kind in the U.S. and brings in participants from all over the country to compete.
“The factory has really become a destination for visitors,” Van Dan Elzen says. “It’s a great place to visit, shop for yoyos, and even learn how to use them and do tricks.”
Every Friday afternoon, the YoYoFactory offers free yoyo lessons taught by a yoyo champion and expert.
Yoyos were invented in ancient Greece around 500 B.C. It was introduced to the Philippines in the 1600s by the Spanish. The Filipinos introduced the modern yoyo to the U.S. in 1916.
The toy did have an upswing in popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, but according to Van Dan Elzen, the world sees a yoyo craze about every 30 years.
“I love that ah-ha moment that yoyos give you when it finally clicks and you feel like you’ve mastered or accomplished something,” Van Dan Elzen says. “I get to share that moment with both kids and adults every day.”
YoYoFactory yoyos can be found at Hobby Lobby or at the factory store. There are dozens of different models of yoyos, and they range in price from $5-$450.

Sometimes asking yourself the right questions will lead you on a completely different path.
This was the case for Audrey Martinez.
She knew that being active was the key to a healthy lifestyle. And while walking, hiking, running, biking, and swimming are all activities that can be enjoyed year-round in Arizona, sometimes it takes a little push to get going.
“It’s a mental game!” as Martinez says.
Having that little bit of extra energy or the right mental stamina can help you overcome the barriers between who you are now, and who you want to be. Audrey’s Chia Cookies are a delicious way to gain this extra push.
HOW DID AUDREY’S CHIA COOKIES START?
For my 50th birthday, I decided to run a marathon and started researching healthy foods to help me reach my goal. That’s how I came across chia seeds and started testing [them]. I would just chug a tablespoon of chia seeds with water and go on my runs. I soon noticed that I felt more energized. To test this, I started to use it for one week on and one week off. The weeks that I did use chia, I felt so much more energized. It was a big difference, actually.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT CHIA SEEDS THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE?
Well, it gives you stamina and endurance, it gels up in your stomach and helps metabolize the glucose into usable energy. It releases slowly into your system and reduces the rate of carbohydrate conversion to sugar. If you are a runner, you can just keep going because right around mile 10, you know, you’re starting to feel like slowing down. It’s a mental sport.
WHAT OTHER THINGS DID YOU NOTICE ABOUT IT?
After a while, I started noticing all the other benefits, like gut health, hair, and nails— everything! I just felt so much better overall. I just thought, “Wow, this is an amazing seed! Gosh, how can I get everybody to eat chia?”
I felt [that] people didn’t know what to do with it and thought of putting it in cookies because who doesn’t eat cookies? Everybody is doing blending and shakes, and—to be honest—I don’t think they’re satisfying.
THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME AS AN ENTREPRENEUR. HOW ARE THINGS GOING?
I got my first batch of cookies in the middle of 2018 and started getting on the shelves at the local stores in 2019. We did so well in Whole Foods that I’m asking them to take us into California. They are available in Arizona at Fry’s on the local product shelf. We’re also in a lot of independent stores around the Valley, some restaurants, and hotels.
A curated selection of the most intriguing upcoming events in our area.

Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.”
• Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.
• Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

“Cathy is a wonderful person first, and an awesome realtor. She was instrumental in my relocation from Washington and was very accommodating with my needs and requests. She showed me a bunch of houses and would point out things that I would normally not look at. This is why you should have a pro that understands residential construction and nuisances of Arizona homes. She always was available to answer my calls and got me connected with a great local lender, an accountant, a locksmith, You name it, she’s got connections! I am so happy with the home I bought and Cathy will go the extra mile for you, too! ”
