us to put together at Chandler Lifestyle—there are just so many amazing men in the community! We wanted to spotlight them all in our 2019 Men of Chandler feature, but our selection committee was charged with choosing this year's winners. They said it was an extremely difficult task! Thank you to everyone who nominated their favorite guy. This year's list of men ranges from a museum administrator to business owners to a precinct commander, and so many others. The one thing they all have in common is that they're making an impact on our wonderful community. Speaking of our wonderful community, it was such a joy to see so many of these men arrive at our photo shoot and realize that they knew others there, too. Paths cross often when you're doing so many amazing things!

LAURA ROBERTSON NAMED CEO OF NEW BANNER HEALTH HOSPITAL Banner Health announced that Laura Robertson has accepted the additional role as CEO of Banner Ocotillo Medical Center in Chandler, while continuing to serve as CEO of Banner Desert Medical Center and Banner Children’s at Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa. Laura also served as CEO of Banner Baywood Medical Center and, eventually, assumed the CEO role of both
Why does the American Association of Orthodontists recommend that children be seen by orthodontists by the age of 7? There are several reasons kids should be evaluated early even if the baby teeth look ok. When patients come in for an orthodontic evaluation, one of the things we do is take a panoramic x-ray. This x-ray allows the orthodontists to see the entirety of the dental development, including developing permanent teeth underneath the baby teeth. We find that problematic canine development can be detected early, and can be treated to prevent future impaction. What we look for is the narrowness of the dental arch, and the angulation of the developing canines. Early treatment includes a Rapid Palatal Expander, and a few brackets to align and to open spaces for developing canines. When the early treatment is successful, the canines will change their path and erupt into their normal pattern.

HOME FOR GENERATIONS THE RAY FAMILY (YES, THAT RAY FAMILY!) SHARES THEIR STORY
WHEN BROTHERS PETER OR ANDY RAY MEET SOMEONE NEW WHO IS FROM CHANDLER, THEIR LAST NAME IS ONE OF THE FIRST TALKING POINTS. Chandler’s Streets: The History of Chandler’s Streets as told by CGCC Students.” It provides details on how Milton Ray was born to a farming family in 1910, and moved to Chandler in 1915. “Their farm was located along Ray Road, between Cooper and Gilbert Roads,” according to CGCC. “They raised hay and cattle. When Milton was 10, his father died, and the whole family had to help bring in money for the family. Eventually, the Ray family moved off the farm and rented various homes. Milton grew up in Chandler and in 1929 he graduated from Chandler High School.” According to CGCC, Milton shared memories of his school days. “There were a lot of horse-drawn buggy races and saddle pony races to and from school, and even at noon hour until they were forbidden. As usual, a few accidents of broken wheels, crippled horses, riders and drivers caused the curtailment. Hitching racks and water troughs were available at school. Each owner went out at noon or recess and watered their horses.... Many a student walked to school and back home. Later, when a CONTINUED >

All of us who skated to school and had a friend riding a horse along the same paved road, we’d hang on to the horse’s tail, thus getting pulled and getting a free ride.” Milton would grow up, marry Gwen, and continue to live in the area and raise a family. Andy and Peter’s father, Mario, was their youngest son. He raised his family—Andy, Peter and brothers Brennan, Tim and Matt—in Chandler as well, but tragically died in a plane crash in 1990. All five Ray sons—who have 19 children of their own between them—stayed in the area. Peter is now a general dentist at Ray Family Dental Care and Andy is an oral surgeon at Canyon State Oral

Brennan, Tim and Matt have found career success in law and entrepreneurship. “People recognize the name and I always tell the backstory every chance I get,” Andy says. “I think it helps to show local community members that we just didn’t show up in Chandler yesterday,” Peter adds. Andy shares how the three eldest Ray brothers went to Chandler High School, the same school their grandpa graduated from in 1929. “I still live in the same zip code I grew up in,” shares Peter. While both Ray brothers admit that Chandler has changed since they were children, they note that they love the community’s great schools, weather, and are active in their local faith community (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). “Having such a history in Chandler gives

A teacher and mentor to the students at Fulton School of Engineering, Aram is set on mentoring the next generation of leaders, and his teaching style frees them from the traditional constructs of uniformity with lateral thinking through entrepreneurial road mapping. It’s something he finds incredibly rewarding. “Mentoring several students and startups each semester and teaching our future leaders is a priceless occupation. Getting to listen to people’s dreams every day is incredibly humbling,” he says. His teaching at ASU earned him the Highest Rated Professor at ASU (State Press, 2015). He’s also received the FSE Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (ASU, 2017), was featured as “20 People to Know-Startups” by Phoenix Business Journal (2017), and was nominated for the FSE Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (ASU, 2018). Outside of his 70- to 80-hour workweek, Aram donates his time to efforts like Tonto Creek Camp, which delivers curriculum to underserved youth every summer. The married father of two also volunteers his time to coach soccer to young kids, mentor students, and help entrepreneurs and small businesses in Chandler. He is also currently publishing a book on entrepreneurship.—GY
MJ Reavley has always had a love for both fitness and people and, as the owner of Fit Society, he is able to combine both of those passions daily. He believes in steward leadership—essentially leading by serving and doing—to help him create a fitness community that “connects, challenges and inspires people to be better together.” With a “work, play, achieve” approach to life, MJ says that the most satisfying part of what he does is helping his clients to create real relationships. “The most rewarding feeling is being able to act as a vessel for real, positive life-changing relationships for the better,” he says. In addition to his work at the studio, he also gives back to local charities, schools and small businesses in a variety of ways. While several coaches have inspired him throughout his fitness journey, he shares that his mother is his biggest supporter and inspiration. From a small town in Colorado, he appreciates the hometown feel of Chandler and— while he’s known for his fitness and healthy lifestyle—he admits that he has an affinity for chocolate chip cookies and “people who do the uncommon, uncommonly well.”—MTE 24

Jimmy Silva is a problem solver, a good listener and a people person. He’s also a United States Marine Corps veteran who supports a long list of non-profit organizations. “Entrepreneurship is in my blood. I believe in owning your life, taking some risk, helping others in need, and helping others achieve their dreams of owning a business,” he says. He gives his dad credit for his work ethic and his ability to overcome challenges. He also tips his hat to his wife and kids. “My wife is my rock and inspiration,” he says. “We’ve been through so many life battles together and continue to come out on top. My four kids show me every day why I’m here and that no matter how hard business gets, connections to people you love are the most important thing and offer the greatest wealth,” says Jimmy. Jimmy and his wife are adoptive parents. Their four kids are siblings who they fostered for two years before making their family official about a year ago. “When we took on the challenge, we thought we could be some kids’

Robert Whetstine Cr edi t A n a ly s t, T o y o ta Fin a n ci a l S er v ices Robert Whetstine is a positive guy who’s not afraid to dress up as the Grinch for ICAN’s youth holiday party. He’ll even bring his son, dressed as Buddy the Elf. Family is important to Robert, and he has a big one. He’s married and has two teen sons, three rescue dogs, two cats, two tortoises, a snake and a hamster. “My family inspires me, because any success I have had is a direct result of the amount of love and support they have always provided me,” he says. Robert is a member of The Henrys, ICAN’s leadership development group that fundraises. And thanks to his efforts, Toyota Financial Services is a sponsor of its annual Thanksgiving dinner, which feeds 500 community members a free holiday meal. Robert also volunteers for Together We Rise, The Boys & Girls Clubs of Guadalupe and UMOM. He coaches youth sports and enjoys giving back to the community by supporting local businesses. His next goal is to share his love of books by reading to kids in character. The most rewarding part of what he does is knowing he made a child smile and feel important.—MG

For those who encounter him at Desert Car Care of Chandler, they might be surprised to find out that Frank Leutz is also a highly trained jazz trombonist, a DJ and a short film producer. The dad of two though calls the family business home because he was inspired by his father-in-law years ago while serving as his apprentice. He realizes that car care isn’t just about the vehicles, but he appreciates the opportunity to make an impact, too, by helping to reassure customers when they’re going through a stressful time. “My primary goal is to be the best I can be for my family and community while inspiring others to do the same,” he says. His shares that his inspiration in life was his mother. “As a single mom working to keep things safe and comfortable, I learned the value of work ethic and accountability while always enjoying the smallest things in life.” Frank also dedicates time to working with an extensive list of charitable causes, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 22 Too Many veterans, Youth World Education Program Mentor and many others.—MTE

Since he was a child, the notes have frequently carried him to the Phoenix Boys Choir, which he joined when he was 10-years-old. THE NEW D E S T I N AT I O N IT’S BECAUSE HE’S SPENT 15 YEARS IN THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY, AND HAS BEEN IN BAR OWNERSHIP FOR THE LAST FOUR. He owns the popular spot The Wandering Tortoise, as well as Hops on Birch—and now, along with owner/operator Tony Fatica and owner/partner Ryan Kemmet, Justin Evans is the owner/operator of Chandler’s newest hot spot, The Sleepy Whale, located at 290 S. Arizona Ave. “We offer beers, meads and coffee that are not heavily distributed or distributed at all in Phoenix and/or Arizona,” Justin says. “We’ve met a lot of amazing people and built a lot of relationships in our business. This translates to the great selection we’re able to offer. We do not serve food, but always allow outside food to be brought into the tap room. We have many amazing restaurants around us that even deliver to us. Ghett’ yo’ Taco, Mingle + Graze and Civic Market, to name a few!” From concept to opening day took 15 months, and is already drawing a strong following. This “beer bar + bottle shop” offers a modern laidback atmosphere, with picnic tables and stools dotting the interior and a large patio with plenty of shade and a wall with the word “Chandler” across it outdoors. Current specials include happy hour from 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Monday through Friday, and Industry Happy Hour from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Sunday and Monday. “I believe Downtown Chandler is already an amazing area offering great bars and restaurant concepts. I believe we add to this with the unique beer selection, service and ambience in an unpretentious setting. We all love what we do and love the community that surrounds it!” says Justin. 30

REV YOUR ENGINES! Two new car destinations have opened in the Valley. Since often cars and guys just seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly or football games and cold beer, we thought our Men’s Issue was the perfect time to introduce you to these locales. OTTO CAR CLUB For those who collect cars, a unique new members-only social club that features private collection management and storage, as well as a dedicated concierge service, may be just the ticket to automotive happiness. Called OTTO Car Club, it features private club space, climate-controlled storage, and a staff that’s knowledgeable to the needs of private car collectors. The 47,000-square-foot facility, which is located in Scottsdale, can accommodate up to 185 vehicles in the main storage area, with 20 more private storage spaces that give people 24/7 access for two to four cars each. Even the name of the new facility relates to cars. OTTO is in honor of Nikolaus August Otto, a German engineer and inventor of the compressed-charge combustion engine. In addition to state-of-the-art storage, OTTO offers members a number of activities and experiences, including speakers, private rallies, track days, product introductions and other events that are planned with the car collector community in mind. OTTO’s staff can also handle vehicle detailing requests, transport and collection management, and a web portal and app lets members control their collections from the convenience of their smartphones. Two tiers of membership are currently available. For more information, visit OttoCarClub.com.

“It is in the spirit of family and tradition that we proudly bring to you Señor Rio Tequila,” note Co-founders Jonathan and Debbie Medina Gach at SenorRio.com. Debbie, a Chicago native, had moved to Gilbert, where she had met Jonathan. It was a short time later when she received an unexpected phone call from her father, who was in Mexico. The two had had a 30-year separation. That call resulted in the couple’s memorable trip to Jalisco. During the emotional and joyful reunion, Debbie and Jonathan tried the special homemade tequila that Debbie’s father only shared with family and friends, made from a recipe handed down through the generations. They were impressed with its smoothness and quality. Debbie’s father—or Señor Rio as he was known by those he was close to—later gifted the family’s process and recipe to the couple. They include Blanco, Reposado, Añejo, Double Barrel Añejo, Extra Añejo and Café Elegancia. The company has won awards in taste and presentation from the L.A. Wine and Spirits Competition, the Spirits of Mexico competition, and the San Francisco Wine and Spirits competition.
