Let's Invest Wisely
As we embrace the warmer temperatures and freshness of April, we are excited to bring you our annual Investment issue of Chamblee City Lifestyle, and it’s not just limited to financial investment, but to the broader idea of investing in the things that matter most in life.
Whether you’re considering how to grow your wealth, nurture your health, strengthen your community, or invest in your child's future, this month’s issue offers something for everyone who wants to make thoughtful, lasting choices.
In this issue, we explore the many facets of investment, starting with the importance of prioritizing your health. We spoke with our friends at CrossFit Vengeance to discuss expert tips on wellness, fitness, and mental health—reminders that investing in yourself pays dividends for both your body and mind. From self-care routines to local resources for healthier living, this issue emphasizes how the best investments often start from within.
We also highlight the power of community investment. Chamblee is a thriving city with a spirit of collaboration, and by supporting local businesses, engaging in volunteer opportunities, and fostering connections with neighbors, you’re investing in a brighter future for everyone.
Our stories showcase individuals and groups making meaningful contributions to the growth of Chamblee, proving that small actions can create big change.
Lastly, we touch on the most precious investment of all—your child’s future. We follow one of our very own staffer’s journey with one of her young children and how The Goddard School in Chamblee (Brookhaven) is helping to transform his life.
We hope this issue inspires you to make thoughtful, intentional investments that will pay off for years to come—whether it's your health, your family, or the future of your community.
Thank you for being part of the Chamblee City Lifestyle family. We hope this issue encourages you to invest wisely in the things that matter most. Enjoy reading!

Investing in YOUR CAREER
Your headshot is often the first thing potential clients, employers, and collaborators see, making it a powerful tool for personal branding. In just a few seconds, people form an impression of you based on your photo.
According to LinkedIn, profiles with professional headshots get 21 times more profile views and 36 times more messages. Potential clients, employers, or partners might sift through countless profiles, so having a standout photo might be just the thing to get you noticed.
Invest in your career with a great headshot
How to Get a GREAT HEADSHOT
WHAT IS YOUR HEADSHOT SAYING ABOUT YOU?
Your headshot isn’t just showing people what you look like, it tells people a little about what it’s like to work with you. People often view your headshot to assess their compatibility with you. An outdated, blurry or poorly lit selfie can appear unprofessional, while a clear, appealing headshot can convey confidence, professionalism, approachability, and attention to detail.
DO YOU NEED A NEW HEADSHOT?
You should update your headshot every two to three years, or when you undergo a change in hairstyle, hair color, weight, or personal style, or for men, a change in facial hair. As you grow in your career, your headshot should also reflect any change in career or position. Someone you meet in person should be able to immediately identify you from your headshot.
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER
Look for a photographer with experience in branding photography, as they understand how to convey the right message through lighting, composition, and expression. Your photographer should be able to work with you to create visuals that tell your story.
2. DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Dress for the job you want. Your clothing should align with your industry and the image you want to project. If you’re in a corporate role, opt for classic business attire such as a blazer or a button-down shirt. If you’re in a creative field, you may have more flexibility to showcase personality through color or style, but even
in a corporate setting, you can find ways to express yourself through accessories, color, and clothing style.
People tend to trust those who appear well-put-together and confident. Avoid busy patterns or small stripes, and opt for solid colors that complement your skin tone. Make sure clothing is wrinkle-free.
A great headshot tells people a little about you.
your story.
5. PERFECT YOUR EXPRESSIONS AND POSES
We all know the importance of body language in person, but it’s important in photos too. Your body language can convey openness and confidence. Your expression should be approachable, yet professional. A smile can make you appear friendly and confident, while a serious expression can convey authority. Regardless of which expression you choose, the key is for it to be natural, not forced. A genuine smile exudes friendliness and warmth, while a forced or stale smile can come off as inauthentic.
A great headshot is more than just a photo—it’s an investment in your professional success. By making a positive first impression, building credibility, and reinforcing your personal brand, a high-quality headshot can open doors and create new opportunities.
Take the time to invest in a professional photographer, dress the part, and present yourself in the best possible light. Your career deserves it!

3. PAY ATTENTION TO GROOMING
Hair, makeup, and grooming should be polished but natural. Women may choose to have professional hair and makeup done for a refined look. Your look should align with your daily appearance, so don’t let your hair, makeup, or facial hair vary significantly from your day-to-day look.
4. CONSIDER THE SETTING
Plain backdrops keep the focus on you, while a setting that reflects your work environment or industry can add depth to the story your headshot tells. Consider your office, the city skyline, urban settings, or a natural outdoor setting to tell your story.
A natural setting may be the perfect backdrop for your headshot.

GET MOVING WITH CROSSFIT.
ARTICLE BY CHAMBLEE CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET HOWARD
Perhaps there’s nothing more important than one’s health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at cdc.gov, physical activity has both immediate and long-term health benefits.
Brandon and Emily Romanos, owners of CrossFit Vengeance in Chamblee, explain the benefits of fitness and good nutrition habits, and how CrossFit can benefit one’s overall health and well-being.
While any movement is good, Brandon and Emily explain that CrossFit offers:
Constantly Varied Workouts: Unlike traditional programs that stick to repetitive routines, CrossFit workouts change daily to keep things engaging and prevent plateaus.
Functional Movements: Instead of isolated exercises (like bicep curls or leg presses), CrossFit focuses on compound, functional movements, which translate directly to real-life strength and mobility.
High-Intensity Workouts: CrossFit applies the principle of intensity by using time domains, rep schemes, and competitive elements to push effort levels, leading to rapid results in strength, endurance, and fat loss.
Scalability for All Levels: While some programs cater to beginners or elite athletes, CrossFit is scalable allowing anyone to participate and progress.
Community and Accountability: CrossFit fosters a strong sense of community, where members push each other, celebrate personal records, and create lasting friendships.
General Physical Preparedness (GPP): CrossFit isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about preparing for the unknown and unknowable, making you fit for life rather than just looking good in the mirror.
NUTRITION
“You can’t out train a bad diet,” Emily says. “The easiest way to think about it is that your nutrition and diet is 80% of the fitness pie, while training and working out make up 20%. If you're not properly fueling your body and providing it with the necessary nutrients to function, you'll struggle to see results, make improvements, build strength, or lose weight.”
If you're new to nutrition, Emily, the in-house nutrition coach, suggests these eight key points:
Prioritize Whole Foods: Eat lean proteins, veggies, fruits, healthy fats and quality carbs. Minimize processed foods and sugary drinks. Shop the perimeter aisles of the grocery store.
Balance Your Plate: Focus on quality servings of proteins, carbs, veggies and fats.
Don’t Starve or Overeat: While a calorie deficit is required for weight loss, eating too little will result in having no energy to work out, and eating too much, regardless of what it is, will cause weight gain.
Hydrate: Drink at least half your body in ounces of water each day.
Focus on Protein: Crucial to build lean muscle mass, recover, and to keep you full.
Plan Ahead: Prep food ahead of time to take the guesswork out of what to eat and to prevent making poor diet decisions.
Avoid Extreme Diets: There’s no need for crazy restrictions. Each macronutrient (carbs, proteins, fats) plays an important role in your body. Instead, focus on consistency and quality food choices. Start small and build good habits by choosing one or two things to work on each week. Progress comes from small, sustainable changes and habits - not perfection.
SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM BENEFITS
Benefits can vary with any fitness program.
Short-term benefits (defined as the first few weeks to months) in a CrossFit program include:
Improved Cardiovascular Fitness: The high-intensity nature of workouts quickly boosts heart and lung capacity, leading to better endurance.
Increased Strength and Muscle Tone: Functional strength improves rapidly due to compound lifts and high-rep bodyweight movements.
Enhanced Fat Loss and Body Composition: The mix of strength and conditioning torches calories and increases metabolic rate.
Better Mobility and Flexibility: Constant movement patterns help increase joint range of motion and reduce stiffness.
Mental Clarity and Mood Boost: The intensity of workouts releases endorphins, reduces stress and improves mood.
Quick Gains in Athleticism: Coordination, balance, and agility improve due to varied workouts,
Long-term benefits (defined as months to years) in a CrossFit program include:
Increased Bone Density and Joint Health: Weight-bearing exercises reduce the risk of osteoporosis and strengthen ligaments and tendons.
Sustained Fat Loss and Muscle Retention: Unlike crash diets or traditional cardio, CrossFit helps maintain a lean, strong body for life.
Lower Risk of Chronic Diseases: Regular training improves insulin sensitivity, reduces blood pressure, and can lower the risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Better Longevity and Functional Independence: Training functional movements ensures the ability to perform everyday tasks (lifting, squatting, carrying) well into old age.
Stronger Mental Resilience: The intensity and challenge of workouts build grit, discipline, and confidence that translate into other areas of life.
Improved Immune System: Regular exercise strengthens immunity, reducing the likelihood of illness.
Lifelong Community and Support System: The community provides motivation and accountability, making it easier to stick with fitness for the long haul.

CROSSFIT COACHES MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Coaches provide value beyond just leading workouts. They inspire, educate, and build a community where people thrive. Their expertise, passion, and commitment create an environment where people progress safely, stay motivated, and build lasting fitness habits. Key benefits of having dedicated coaches include:
Expert Guidance and Safety: By teaching proper form and technique, coaches reduce the risk of injury. They provide feedback, correcting movements to improve efficiency and performance. They participate in the methodology, allowing them to have firsthand knowledge and experience with the programming, movements and standards.
Personalized Scaling and Progression: Whether you’re a beginner, elite athlete, or recovering from injury, coaches help modify workouts to fit individual needs. They track progress and help break plateaus and reach new personal records safely.
Motivation and Accountability: Coaches bring energy and enthusiasm making workouts engaging and fun, and help members stay accountable by setting goals, and celebrating progress.
Community Leadership and Support: Coaches foster a tight-knit, supportive environment. They help integrate new members to ensure everyone feels welcomed and encouraged. And they build relationships, creating a culture where people genuinely want to show up and improve.
Holistic Health and Lifestyle Coaching: Coaches provide nutrition tips, recovery strategies, and lifestyle advice to support members beyond the gym. They encourage smart training habits, balancing intensity with recovery to prevent burnout.
Competitive and Performance Development: For athletes looking to compete in CrossFit, Hyrox, or other fitness events, coaches help to fine-tune skills, improve efficiency, and build game-day strategies. They push

members beyond their comfort zones, helping them realize they’re capable of more than they thought.
Emily and Brandon’s advice is to just get started, wherever you are in your fitness journey.
“A common quote we share is you don’t find God and then go to church,” Brandon says. “So you don’t need to get fit to join CrossFit Vengeance. We are here for everyone that is at any step of their fitness journey. Member safety is our top priority and we have established an On-Ramp Program. Our On-Ramp Program is a 90-day commitment designed to teach the core movements and standards we see in the CrossFit Methodology along with the language used.”
Fitness is a lifestyle. Brandon and Emily stress that your fitness is rented, so like any fitness program, you can and will lose conditioning and strength if you don’t continue to work out.

Investing in Your Child’s Education
It’s never too early to invest in your child’s education.
We all want our children to excel when it comes to academics. And as parents, how can we help? Perhaps one of the first things we can do is to start our kids on the path to learning early on.
Chamblee residents, Spencer and Polina Williams, set out to do just that when they noticed their son, Silas, wasn’t hitting some of the usual milestones that most children reach by certain ages. In addition, he was nonverbal, which they initially thought was because they were raising him in a bilingual household. They decided to enroll him in school.
Unfortunately, the first school Spencer and Polina enrolled their son in wasn’t the experience they had hoped for. It was during that experience they learned their son was likely on the autism spectrum, and the school wasn’t prepared to help them. Polina says they immediately withdrew Silas from the school and searched for a new one. After interviewing five schools, they found The Goddard School of Chamblee (Brookhaven).
“At The Goddard School, we believe the early years of a child’s life are critical, as they set the foundation for their future success,” said Akshi Naik, owner of The Goddard School of Chamblee (Brookhaven). “As a parent myself, I understand the importance of nurturing young minds during these formative years.”

The Goddard School’s exclusive inquiry-based education program, Wonder of Learning™, embraces how children learn best— through their innate curiosity—because research confirms that when wonder leads, learning follows. Wonder of Learning features a cutting-edge curriculum developed by a diversely skilled group of educators, researchers, physicians and early childhood experts, as well as built-in assessment of academic and social-emotional progress and family communication via a proprietary app. Inquiry-based learning, which guides the Wonder of Learning curriculum, is a teaching and learning approach that focuses on the natural curiosity and sense of wonder children bring into the classroom. With teacher-guided inquiry topics, children learn about themselves and the world around them by exploring their interests, investigating concepts and asking questions. Wonder of Learning builds age-appropriate academic, social and emotional skills through curiosity, collaboration, investigation and discovery.
Silas spends time with his teacher.
The program also incorporates STEAM enrichment activities, including yoga, art, music and outdoor play that embed concepts such as community, design thinking, communication and critical thinking, which support children today and in the future.
“By encouraging children to ask questions and explore their interests and curiosities, we help them develop a lifelong love of learning,” added Akshi. “When children develop a strong desire to learn early on, they are more likely to excel as they progress through their educational journeys.”
Silas eventually received an official diagnosis. As his mother, Polina is his biggest advocate, and she says she never realized it would be so hard. But some things, including his new school, have made it a little easier.
Silas has attended The Goddard
School of Chamblee (Brookhaven) for about a year now, and he is not only doing well, but like many of his classmates, he’s thriving.
The Goddard School of Chamblee (Brookhaven) offers several enrichment programs, including Spanish, dance and engineering. Additionally, it features an indoor gymnasium, an outdoor garden, multiple playgrounds and hospital-grade sanitization equipment to ensure a healthy environment.
For more about The Goddard School and how to enroll in the Chamblee (Brookhaven) location, visit GoddardSchool.com . Joseph Markle, public relations specialist with The Goddard School, contributed to this article.

“I get a lot of joy out of how proud people are.” Leslie Robson, Chamblee City Councilmember
Investing in Community
Chamblee City Councilmember Leslie Robson tells why she’s invested in the city of Chamblee.
Leslie Robson moved to Chamblee about 30 years ago. Since then she's invested 17 years serving the community as a Chamblee City Councilmember.
Leslie says it was during the planning of Chamblee’s 100th birthday celebration when she decided to volunteer. “I looked at what was happening in Chamblee, and I could tell there was a lot of potential here that wasn’t being used,” she says.
She also says there was something missing. In looking for where people gather to get to know each other, she realized Chamblee didn’t have that because there wasn't an infrastructure for it. "That's when I decided to get on city council," she says.
Leslie says it was like-minded people under the leadership of the previous mayor looking into what Chamblee needed to become a “livable city,” defined as a community that offers a high quality of life for its residents. “I had an idea in my head about what it was going to look like
and how it was going to manifest itself,” Leslie says.
That vision started with an initial plan designed by a friend who was an architect, and while that plan changed over time, Leslie says it sparked them into realizing they needed a common goal. “The whole 17 years I’ve been on council we’ve pulled together for a common goal,” she says. “It gives me chills to think about it.”
Since then the city has experienced a lot of growth. City officials have made great progress with initiatives such as walkability, economic development, and more, and Leslie says there’s still more to come, such as green space and improving the connectivity of the different areas of Chamblee. But like Leslie, area residents are proud of the community.
“I get a lot of joy out of how proud people are,” Leslie says. “The people who live here are proud of Chamblee.”
