Style Is Always In Fashion

"Style" can mean something different to everyone. Style refers to the distinctive way in which something is done, expressed or presented. It can apply to fashion, writing, art, architecture. Style reflects the personal preferences and characteristics that define how something is created.

In this issue, we celebrate local style. We have chosen a few Style Icons in our community, individuals with a unique look or approach to life. We hear what style means to them and how they like to express themselves in their work, at home, through art or fashion.

We check in with Annie Jack and Honeysuckle Rose to see what stylish finds are in shops this fall. We also show some fun Hair Hacks  that can be found on the street as well as on the runway.

We also get to immerse ourselves in Outdoor Living style this issue. With so many options with pools, landscaping, lighting, and outdoor kitchens, the sky is the limit on how you can create your own personal outdoor oasis in your own chosen style.

As individuals, we have the freedom to embrace established styles, blend them together, or forge entirely new paths, becoming trendsetters ourselves. We hope this issue inspires you to forge new paths or perhaps explore familiar ones. There is so much here in Celina to uplift your spirits, boost your productivity and ignite your creativity.

What I’ve found is that the best style is an authentic expression of who you really are. And that’s something no one on earth can duplicate.

Here’s to being uniquely you!

As always, thank you for reading and we'll see you around town!

Celina Opens New Police Headquarters

The Celina Police Department has officially opened its new headquarters located at the corner of Punk Carter Parkway and Coit Road. The building features a large and inviting lobby with A/V needs and other support systems to serve as a community room or training area for the department. In addition to the main building which houses Police Administration, Records, and Patrol, among other divisions, a building next door provides space for Property and Evidence.

Celina Goes Back To School

Several local groups helped prepare our community and students for the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. Helping Hands of Celina held their annual shopping event providing students with clothing, shoes, and hygiene items.  Bobcat Moms hosted their kickoff event, Bobcats and Bling. Attendees donned cocktail attire and enjoyed snacks and dessert while getting involved on behalf of their athlete. The Chamber’s annual Meet the Bobcats was again a great success with around thirty vendors handing out bobcat swag.

CELINA’S NEW HEARTBEAT

TEXAS AMPS AND AXES TO BRING LOVE OF MUSIC TO TOWN

Driving down Broadway in downtown Prosper is reminiscent of the small town it was not too many years ago. Catty-corner to The Gin and up the stairwell to your right once you come in Texas Amps and Axes, you may stumble upon the unassuming office of Iris Meneley. Celina residents Iris and John Meneley are proud owners of the space at 117 W Broadway Street, where they have been bringing the joy of music to the Prosper and surrounding communities.

Since opening in 2016 with five teaching rooms, the music-school-meets-guitar-shop has expanded four times and grown into the 20 teaching rooms they now have at their Prosper location. Although there isn’t much public information to release yet, Iris says they are also excited to be working on opening a Celina location.

“Coming soon to Celina—we hope, we think, we feel, we’re confident—trust in God that that’s going to continue to be the pathway,” Iris said. “It’s been a journey; it’s been really magical.”

The music school and guitar shop Texas Amps and Axes prides today all began their senior year of college with John’s business plan capstone project and Iris’s love of other worlds within pages.

“I’m obsessed with books; I love reading. If I could just read for a living, I would be the happiest person in the planet. That’s my favorite place to be - is in a book,” Iris said. “We always talked about opening what we called The Beatnik, and it was like a café bookstore with a music shop on it. So, that was like the first [iteration] of—the inception, the idea—of Texas Amps and Axes, and then it became what it is today.”

Equipped with two degrees in music business from DBU and a dream, John and Iris opened

their doors. The Meneleys’ business opened just six weeks after their son Hendricks was born, and like their beginnings, quickly brought family to music.

“When we first opened…we actually had a pack and play behind the desk, and that’s where he was for so much of our beginning years: in his little pack and play, and then toddling around…All the other kids in the studio would come and go play with him, and it was my favorite,” Iris said. “The kid has never met a stranger; he would grab books from his room, and then he would go hand them to parents and crawl in their lap like, ‘Read to me!’”

The family, Iris says, they have built through the 38 teachers they have today, showcasing a long list of accolades and degrees amongst them, are not just impressive and talented.

“We’ve been extremely blessed to find some of the coolest, oddest, funniest teachers on the planet,” she said. “…

And they’re all— not just teachers— but they’re performers, too. So, they’re able to kind of share a whole different side and aspect of music with their kids, which I think helps make the students more well-rounded. But they’re great, they’re like a little family to us.”

The teachers they pick are important to them, Iris says, because they all point back to their mission and purpose.

“We’re so passionate about being here in Prosper and Celina that it’s something that we look for: is just someone to grow alongside us,” Iris said. “I think the team that we’ve built is so magical because of that.”

Iris says they push for a more relational, customized approach to music education rather than the transactional, institutional experiences of other music schools.

“What that means on our end is we’re listening and playing a lot more Taylor Swift music than we’d like to. It is tremendously funny to me that I can kind of like track,

throughout the years, the different musical phases that we’re in. We definitely had ‘Swift’ years, and we’re back to it,” Iris said. “We see your Shawn Mendes, and we’ll raise you something that’s way better.”

Iris explains that music is not just a skill to learn, but a part of life to appreciate.

“Sarcasm is something that we offer very much for free, here. It’s just part of our charm,” Iris said. “But for our kids, it’s more of understanding that music is meaningful, and powerful, and it has the opportunity to get them through some of the darkest times that they’re going to have in their life, and some of the most celebratory times in their life. We really just want them to understand music for what it really is, not just what you hear, but how it makes you feel, and be able to use that and channel that into their lives.”

As they anticipate opening their Celina location, Iris reflects on the past year they’ve spent working towards it and the two-steps-forward-one-stepback experience they’ve struggled with.

“That’s been the experience, but just trusting that God’s got something that’s perfect for us,” Iris said. “Waiting on His timing, which is not my timing, which is an important thing to remember.”

INDEPENDENCE CHIROPRACTIC

Dr. David Jarquin Helps
Athletes Get Back In The Game
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER HAVEMAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTI MURRY

What ultimately drew Dr. Jarquin to chiropractic was an injury he sustained while snowboarding. He tore his MCL, and the orthopedic surgeon had recommended surgery and told him he would be sidelined for 6 months. Not wanting to sit out from soccer, he  looked for alternatives, and a teammate recommended his chiropractor. After 3 months of chiropractic and sports rehab, he was back on the field playing.

Independence Chiropractic sees patients of all demographics, backgrounds, and levels of activity but has a special connection with student athletes. Dr Jarquin played soccer competitively through college and, up until recently, recreationally.  While he acknowledges that chiropractic is not the solution to every injury, he believes that all too often,

drugs and surgery are the first recommendation that an athlete, or anybody, receives. He wants to be able to give people an alternative solution that does not come at the cost of unwanted side effects. At Independence Chiropractic, he helps treat many sports related injuries from bumps and bruises to more serious injuries like sprains and strains. They also co-treat severe injuries such as fractures and tears with the appropriate physicians. Dr Jarquin points out that “our bodies are meant to heal and regenerate… If our nervous system is hindered then our ability to heal and recuperate is also diminished. As a faith based office, I understand that healing comes from above, down and inside out.

My role as a chiropractor is to remove the interference that slows that healing.”

In their office, they address the underlying cause of aches and pains. Before pain, your body has already begun to experience a decrease in functionality, which could be decreased range of motion, decreased muscle responsiveness, or decreased neurological sensitivity which are all key factors in athletic performance. Student athletes are particularly vulnerable because their bones and nervous system are still not fully formed, and they are putting an increased stress on their bodies. As their musculoskeletal and nervous system mature, chiropractic care can keep up with the constant stress and trauma associated with sports by correcting

Bristen and Sarah Phillips are an eclectic and artsy couple. Bristen is a mural painter known locally for his paintings around Celina Square, while Sarah describes herself as a corporate artist. Their story of music, art, and fun can be seen in the fashion they choose.

When not working, Bristen reflects his West Texas cowboy roots with an authentic look of Wrangler jeans, boots, and a cowboy hat. He can be picky about fit and fabrics and shops for quality over quantity. On working days, you will find him staying cool in his Vivobarefoot high-top shoes, Poncho shirt, and shorts. For Bristen, clothing must be comfortable and functional before it is stylish.

Sarah describes herself as boho freestyle. She prefers a long, flowing, colorful dress, fun accessories such as rings and earrings, and her favorite pair of boots. Sarah prefers to challenge the status quo and be herself in all she does, whether chasing her kids around the yard or walking into a corporate boardroom. She confesses that she wants to put in minimal effort with maximum effect, be kind to herself, and dress to her shape.

Both Bristen and Sarah prefer to march to their own drum in how they approach life and the clothes they wear. They believe in shopping locally, indulging in the growing and eclectic businesses moving to the Square.

Anthony Morel, the owner of The Nook CKMC and HEYDAY in Celina, as well as Graffiti Pasta in Denton, sets his own style. His father was born and raised in Italy and always had a flair for fashion. He had a favorite aunt from Harlem, from whom he learned that fashion constantly changes, grows, and goes in new directions. These two people influenced Anthony as he designed his sense of style. He describes himself as comfort but with a focus on things you don’t see every day. He is content to be a rule breaker and finds his sense of style is like his music: a little all over the place but unique.  His go-to wardrobe includes a pair of Lululemon pants good for any work he plans that day, comfortable shoes, and a graffiti t-shirt. Anthony confesses that he notices what other people are wearing and the fabrics they choose and finds their fashion can bleed off on him.

As a busy entrepreneur, Anthony finds that what he wears can motivate him and push his creativity in his work. You can see Anthony’s personality reflected in any of his businesses. He is known for fine cocktails and food with traditional ingredients but a new flair that hits all the senses, and he strives for that in what he wears each day.

Traci Miller

If you have ever been to the Terramania shop on the Celina Square, then you know that owner Traci Miller is passionate about everything from the earth. Her store is bursting with natural fabrics, finishes, and botanicals. And meeting Traci in person, you will most likely find her wearing natural fabrics, while incorporating stones such as turquoise or bangles made with shed horns. She would describe her style in her store, home and fashion as all reflective of her love for nature. But Traci is no wallflower; on the day of our interview, she was wearing a crazy pair of lime green print Palazzo pants with a beautiful but comfortable cotton shirt.

Traci developed her love for fashion and fun during the colorful and over-the-top 1980s. She is a confessed Madonna junkie with a fish net hair bow, tall bangs, and lots of colors and layers. She is the youngest of three girls and had a lot of hand-me-downs to work with. She started designing her style early. While her choice of style influences has changed, her passion for marching to her own beat with her style has remained.

Traci prefers to mix old with new. You will likely find her wearing a pair of new, on-trend, comfortable sandals, dressed in a flowy skirt, a vintage top, and a mix of vintage and new jewelry. She subscribes to being comfortable and stylish and swears by a good pair of comfy boots.

“She would describe her style in her store, home, and fashion as all reflective of her love for nature.”

Meet Malachi and Noa Grayson, a dynamic sibling duo from a sporty Celina family. Malachi, age 13, is a sports enthusiast in 7th grade, while his 11-year-old sister, Noa, is a multi-talented 6th grader. Their unique blend of athleticism and creativity has led them to a successful journey in modeling and acting, with a diverse portfolio of work.

Malachi’s first love is anything athletic. This year, he plans to play football, basketball, and track in school. As you would imagine, his go-to style is anything athletic and comfortable. He is also into gaming and more sports, including NCAA football, Madden, and NBA2K. He would not confess to being a fashion influencer, but he likes what he likes, and comfort is a must.

Noa also has plenty of interests, including basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, Legos, and arts and crafts. Active and fun, Noa is a natural leader. She was on the House Council in elementary school and looks forward to being involved with student government in middle school. Like her brother, her style is defined by the activities she is involved in.

Both kids have always loved fashion and clothes.  They started modeling and acting during the pandemic when everyone had more time at home.  Being on set and seeing the newest fashion trends and how clients style their clothes has influenced how they dress.  The wardrobe stylists always style clothes in cool ways they might not normally pick. But like most teens, their staple musthaves are hoodies or light jackets. Even when it’s hot outside.

LOCAL EXPERTS SHARE TRENDS FOR CREATING THE PERFECT OUTDOOR SPACE

Do you want a relaxing and entertaining outdoor home getaway but don’t know where to start? The people at Automation Integration, Weisz Selection Outdoor Living Specialists, and Daystar Landscapes can help. These local businesses share trends for creating the perfect outdoor space.

ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY
Daystar Landscapes

Eric Becker of Automation Integration in Celina notes new lighting styles include wash lights under the front house windows. Wash lights provide low-profile beams behind shrubs improving safety. Other trends include dimming or strengthening lights’ brightness, plus new lighting colors. Lighting rarely becomes outdated. “If anything, more styles are being added. Manufacturers are more creative offering new variety,” Becker said. “For example, wash lighting, down lighting, hardscape and outdoor kitchen lights, patio lighting, and underwater lighting are all becoming popular,” he continued.

For new homes, Becker recommends modern path lighting with linear shapes

matching the home aesthetics. For an established home, look at the home’s architecture and determine if the home has enough light in the right locations. If needed, the company may recommend adding new lighting trends to update the overall curb appeal.

Becker suggests using a professional rather than attempting do-it-yourself (DIY) projects. Common mistakes include using cheap wire connectors or fixtures with inadequate voltage. “Our company takes the lifestyle of our clients into consideration. We discuss safety, back and front yard use, and other factors,” says Becker. AutomationIntegration.net

Weisz Selection
“The pool should complement the home. Quality doesn’t go out of style so select superior lifetime materials.”

Ready to take the plunge with a pool?

Heather Weisz of Weisz Selection in Gunter has some suggestions. Gone are the “kidney bean” shaped pools replaced by ones that are sleek and linear.  “Spools” (large spa-small pool combos) provide a solution for smaller backyards, while larger spaces now incorporate lazy rivers, splash pads, or islands with sunken bars. Water and fire features, color changing LED lights, covered patio structures, outdoor kitchens, plus fireplaces are popular.

Weisz advises visiting their pool showroom to learn which products will match your needs. She says, “The pool should complement the home. Quality doesn’t

go out of style so select superior lifetime materials.” If your pool needs renovation, replace outdated tile with a high-grade glass and light-colored marble coping. Weisz says, “This can make an ugly, dated pool look great again!”

All the pools Weisz Selection builds are unique and designed according to each customer’s preferences. This sets the company apart from others in the industry. They “do it all” from design through construction. WeiszSelection.com

No outdoor living space is complete without great landscaping. Daystar Landscapes in Prosper provides solutions

for all landscaping needs. Deverie Gray with Daystar shares tips for creating stunning terrains even on a budget.

First, consider building a deck or patio. There are many options such as floating or freestanding decks and raised decks. Concrete pavers or brick patios allow for ultimate creativity and affordable options.

Second, add fresh mulch, specifically uncolored mulch with natural wood tints. Bark mulch is a good choice as is long lasting rubber mulch and pine needles. Replacing mulch gives a vibrant, clean new look to flower beds.

Finally, to obtain a beautiful yard, Daystar suggests planting trees, gardens, and various grasses. Young trees or fruit trees have minimal upkeep adding value and charm. Consider planting perennial plants as they return yearly. Ornamental grass like Blue Oat Grass is also low maintenance.

Daystar Landscapes will make your yard a sanctuary using natural elements with modern touches. The company cites trends like stamped concrete patios and driveways, and pergolas for shade and style. Daystar also makes playful spaces such as bocce ball courts, sports courts (Pickleball!), and putting greens. DaystarLandscapes.com

Enjoying outdoor living is possible with the talents and services from Automation Integration, Weisz Selection, and Daystar Landscapes. These local businesses can give your home the haven you desire.

Tatum Cross | Celina HS

OUTSTANDING STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Sponsored by Lamar National Bank

It is with great pleasure to announce the Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month as selected by the Celina Independent School District (CISD) Athletic Coaching Team. This month’s selection is Tatum Cross.

Tatum is a senior year at Celina High School (CHS) and a captain on the cross country team. Tatum previously played softball and basketball for CHS but, last year, said good bye to softball and added cross country and track. Her favorite moments have been praying with her teammates before every race, and her favorite memory is when the team made it to state last year. Running with a team of supportive girls who encouraged each other along the way was an amazing experience for Tatum. During her junior year, she came in seventh at the district meet, the team won district, the team placed second at regionals, and they qualified for the state cross country meet.

Tatum states, “God has impacted my life through sports, being able to represent him in what I do and the relationships that I have had

with teammates has been a blessing.” She credits Coach Krepps with helping her discover a passion for running and encouraging her to do better in every practice and every race. “His work ethic and dedication to each and every one of us makes me want to do better … I will take all that he has poured into us wherever I go to college!”

Tatum stays busy when not playing sports. She is involved in FCA, DECA, Special Olympics, and she works for the city of Celina and the Celina Senior Center. She also loves baking, spending time with family and friends, bible study, and attending church and student ministry.

After high school, Tatum hopes to be able to run cross country and track in college. After college, she would like to be a part of student ministry or be involved with dietetics. Spiritual health and physical health are her passions. Congratulations to Tatum Cross and her selection as the September Outstanding Student Athlete of the Month sponsored by Lamar National Bank!

I love Celina! Just ask my family, friends and clients and they will tell you how much I love Celina. I fell in love in 2003 and got here as fast as I could, as the saying goes. I love that I get to sell Celina not just as a real estate broker but as a proud citizen, neighbor, and friend. It is an exciting time to be in Celina! There are so many amazing neighborhoods and more on the way. I’m so grateful that I get to help my clients stake their claim in Celina and call it home!

DIY GOLD LEAF JEWELRY DISHES

supplies you’ll need:

• Wooden bowls, trays, etc.

• Gold leaf (or metallic gold paint)

• Gentle Gold leaf brush

• Mod podge (or gold leaf adhesive)

• Acrylic paint

• Paint brushes

• Painters tape (optional)

steps to do:

• Grab a wooden bowl, some acrylic paint, and a brush.

• Hand paint some paint on one section of the bowl.

• Let the first coat dry and paint another two to three coats of paint until you’re happy with the result.

• Let the paint fully dry.

• I wanted my gold leaf paper to overlap the paint for a layered look, so I took a paint brush and painted some Mod Podge in an overlapping pattern.

• Once the Mod Podge gets tacky, use your hand to apply the gold leaf and accompanying wax sheet.

• Push the gold leaf onto the tacky glue, then remove the top layer of paper.

• Use your fingers to gently push the gold leaf onto the glue a little further.

• Next, use the gold leaf brush to smooth over the whole area and gently wipe away any excess gold leaf. Pay extra attention to the edges.

• Next, smooth the gold leaf section as much as possible, but don’t worry about any imperfections. The organic look of the gold leaf being imperfect gives the piece character.

• Next, work your way to the outer edge.

• Once the gold leaf is perfected, gently brush over the leaf with some Mod Podge to seal it to the bowl.

• Let it completely dry and enjoy!

“They’re a great and affordable gift idea for friends.”

Al Fr es co STYLE

Spending time outdoors and enjoying friends and family over good food and drinks is a great way to enjoy the season’s beautiful weather. From the fresh flower arrangements, produce, and herbs, this earthy spread is brimming with character and flavor. The earthy ceramic and clay vases give the perfect vessel to fill with organic cut herbs and handpicked wildflowers. We arranged a beautiful medley of Queen Anne’s lace, mint, sage, rosemary, lavender, lamb’s ear, nigella, buddleia, oregano, dill, feverfew, and geranium to name just a few of these beautiful blooms.

We love a good home-cooked menu mixed with a signature drink, so we paired our meal with a delicious craft cocktail. Buttermilk brined fried chicken was a must for this outdoor party. A delicious peach bread pudding with salted vanilla caramel cream rounded out our meal for the perfect sweet treat. We wanted to share a few of our favorite recipes for you to try at home. Enjoy!

I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.

SUMMER END of CRAB BOIL

Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil and add crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and corn until cooked. Strain water and serve on a large galvanized tray, newspaper or parchment paper – enjoy your meal with guests, family style!

Give each guest a bowl of garlic butter for dipping as well as lemons for squeezing (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with twine to avoid seeds).

Include special beverages and desserts such as a tiered lemon cake or frozen treat to beat the heat.
