I love nostalgia. Watching home videos on VHS, visiting places from my childhood, digging through years’ worth of scrapbooks… As the biggest blubbering crybaby in the South, I can confidently say that there’s just something special about tearing up from remembering the past.
We’re all drawn to those moments that feel familiar, especially as we see the year start to come to a close. That’s likely why I keep getting TikToks about reliving Polar Express Day and making reindeer feed back in elementary school. (Both of which I am now very much in the mood to do.)
In a world that is so turbulent, it’s no wonder why we cling to the simple joys. After all, it’s those simple joys that make the strongest impact.
The holidays are a time when we can slow down and appreciate the traditions that bring us comfort. That might be the old ugly Christmas sweater that somehow gets funnier every year, or decorating gingerbread houses that never quite turn out like the picture on the box. In my case, you bet your bottom dollar I’ll be dragging my family along to as many light displays as physically possible.
Of course, as much as “the most wonderful time of the year” is the chance to reflect, it’s also an opportunity to create brand new memories. The magic truly is in the balance—celebrating what has passed while opening our hearts to what’s still to come.
As you flip through our latest Holiday and Giving Issue, you’ll find plenty of inspiration for making the most out of the season. That may include supporting nonprofits in our community, connecting with your loved ones, or finally making it a point to find your peace. But I hope you take away one thing in particular… To enjoy the little moments.
To our lovely Cedar Park and Leander readers, thank you for making 2024 so special. And yes, I will be sitting down and pouring through our Instagram momentarily just to experience it all over again.
Whatever and wherever you are celebrating, our team wishes you and yours a happy holiday! We’ll see y’all again in the new year.

Step Into the Story
Experience Good Shepherd Lutheran Church’s unique Christmas production Follow The Star
Mark your calendar for December 5th through 7th! Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is bringing the magic of Christmas to life with its 13th annual Follow The Star.
This isn’t your average holiday nativity—it’s the full story of Jesus Christ. Coming together thanks to 300 cast and crew members, you can walk or drive through 10 immersive scenes complete with scripture storyboards. This grew from Pastor Marty Brauer’s vision, which he brought with him after two decades of operation in California. The production now extends internationally to Brazil.
“Follow The Star came at a time when Good Shepherd was just trying to do something that was going to bring the congregation together and bless our community,” says Pastor Steven Headley. “As the pastor of a church who gets to do this, it’s so moving to see people give up their time to serve others and share that joy.”
Following last year’s production, Headley recalls a teenage girl who
wrote to Good Shepherd about just how life-changing her experience had been.
There was also a time when a young boy, in attendance with his mom struggling through cancer, gave the change in his pocket with a request to make sure Follow The Star keeps going.
“My son asked me once what I thought his favorite month was. He said December because we get to do Follow The Star,” says Headley. “Sometimes out of the mouth of children comes the most beautiful truth. And that’s the message I conveyed back to the congregation—that we get to do this and know that God got to see this happen through these 13 years.”
In partnership with Hill Country Community Ministries, Follow The Star continues to make a difference for Greater Austin. To date, attendees have helped raise over $51,000 and 44,435 pounds of food for those in need. This year, you can be a part of that.
Our purpose here is to bless others. It’s what we’re called to do.
WHERE CREATIVITY THRIVES

PRESERVE THE BEAUTY AND INTEGRITY OF YOUR ARTWORK WITH ART DIRECT
For more than 20 years, longtime Cedar Park resident George Prichard has been evolving his creative passions, starting with his art degree and career in art sales. It wasn’t until the rise of the internet that he decided to launch his own business right out of his garage. What began with early success selling on platforms like eBay and Amazon has grown into Art Direct, a thriving fine art print, custom framing, and art gallery in Cedar Park.
Today, Art Direct operates out of a 9,000-squarefoot space, offering the community a full spectrum of services. Home to over 5,000 frames for custom projects and strategic solutions to elevate the look of your home or business, where big box stores say no, Art Direct says, “Bring it on!” Everything from sports memorabilia to 12-foot-long canvases is handled with care. That’s true whether the pieces are placed in Art Direct’s climate-controlled storage or moved around during the delivery and installation process.
“From posters to reproductions to originals, everyone wants some type of art decor in their home. You don’t have to be a collector to have art on your walls,” says Prichard. His inspiration behind Art Direct traces back to his father, a selftaught artist who never had the chance to pursue formal training. Motivated by his father’s struggles
in selling his art, Prichard set out to create a space where anyone— regardless of background—could showcase their talent.
“The best part is seeing customers’ reactions when they pick up a finished design. It’s about getting those personal treasures out of the closet and on the walls where they belong,” says VP Brent Howard.
Art Direct serves as a launchpad for artists, providing resources to elevate their growth. Through collaborations with platforms like Amazon, Walmart, and Wayfair, they expand their creative reach beyond Texas. From services like print fulfillment to licensing opportunities and branding, the team manages logistics so artists can focus on what they do best—creating.
“Our gallery is an eclectic space where everyone can find something that resonates with them. It’s exciting to see visitors connect with a piece,” says Giovanna Martin, Marketing and Gallery Coordinator. “We work with everyone—from our community to interior designers to first-time collectors—and create opportunities for Greater Austin to engage with art in meaningful ways.”
Building strong local connections is at the heart of what Art Direct does. Working with Central Texas art societies and over 500 artists, Art Direct’s goal is to give back and make the business journey as effortless as possible.
For their team, what’s most important is bringing people together. That’s why community involvement is a core value at Art Direct. As a sponsor and coach for the Cedar Park Youth League, Prichard ensures that supporting local teams and hosting events is part of the company’s DNA. “Being involved with the community isn’t just something we do, it’s who we are,” says Prichard.
To submit your work for consideration in Art Direct’s gallery, visit artdirect.com. Or if you’re looking for a holiday gift, swing by 720 S Bell Blvd, Building 9A. You can purchase limited-edition artwork, or their experienced team can turn a photo on your phone into a printed masterpiece.

FOCUS ON SELF-CARE WITH THE GUIDING HAND OF WAY TO WELLNESS
ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL
You can’t pour from an empty cup. Whether you are facing difficult family dynamics, feelings of overwhelm, or workplace burnout, incorporating regular self-care strategies can help you recharge and regain balance in your life.
“Start your day with a gratitude list of at least five things. It’s healing to be able to feel grateful while continuing to work through challenging situations,” says Angela Schaack, founder of Way to Wellness. “Also, pause and plan for how you can manage stress. The key word is plan!”
As you set goals for the holidays and the new year ahead, Schaack recommends being specific, marking actionable milestones, and finding an accountability group.
Your goals may revolve around the temptations that come with festive gatherings. Schaack advocates for mindfulness and moderation when it comes to food selections, especially during this indulgent season.
“Way to Wellness has hosted several Healthy Happy Hour events to educate others about healthier options,” says Schaack. “I look for organic wines with fewer sulfites and no additives that are made with grapes grown with only natural pesticides rather than chemicals. It’s amazing how you notice the real grape taste of the wine.”
Another way to embrace self-care is by stepping away from your normal routine. This coming April, Way to Wellness’s Women’s Wellness Retreat at the Winemaker’s Villa in Florence, Texas offers the perfect opportunity to refresh. Uncover your sense of purpose alongside your sister, daughter, or best gal pal.
“The value of retreats is that we take time for ourselves,” says Schaack. “It’s going to be very interactive, and you’ll make connections with others. It’s not just ‘sit and get.’ There’s a balance of sessions and introspective self-discovery, and time to relax and do activities you enjoy.”
Register today at way-to-wellness.com for your spot at the retreat!

GIVE YOUTHFUL OFFENDERS A SECOND CHANCE THROUGH JAIL TO JOBS
At first glance, the name “Jail to Jobs” suggests a simple goal: helping people transition from incarceration to employment. But dig deeper and you’ll find that this organization goes far beyond that.
It’s about transformation. With a focus on youthful offenders, Jail to Jobs sets out to break the cycle of recidivism through employment-based mentorship. This is accomplished by three-month-long electrical, plumbing, culinary, and entrepreneurial paid programs. Jail to Jobs has even partnered with Google for an internship, where there is an opportunity on the table to get hired at the end.
The other half of their program involves a curriculum based on character development. Topics cover time management, how to talk to your boss, and how to set goals with the aim of showing participants their truest potential.
“Anyone can get a job. We’re building into careers moving forward, which brings hope and future. A lot of these young people don’t know what that is or what it feels like because they only know how to operate in the culture they are in,” says Program Director Eric Mejia. “We’re trying to give them an opportunity to see a culture that will lead them to achieving their aspirations.”
Partnerships with local businesses are the backbone of Jail to Jobs’s success. While the organization excels at preparing and mentoring youth, that crucial next step— employment—rests in the hands of companies willing to take a chance on these participants.
ARTICLE BY MEGAN MARSHALL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAIL TO JOBS
Fortunately, since its founding in 2009, Jail to Jobs has cultivated a network of employers who trust in the program’s ability to provide workers who are not only skilled but eager to prove themselves. One example of this that comes to mind for Mejia is a graduate of their electrical program, Max.
“Max didn’t know what he was getting into at first. But you could see that with every day he was being encouraged and challenged, his attitude changed,” says Mejia. “Midway through the program, he started believing that he could become more. And when he graduated, he got hired at an electrical company five days later. Now, he says in five to 10 years, he can see himself going to the top.”
Sometime later, the Jail to Jobs team would receive an email from a barber inquiring about his son joining the program. He had heard about how it changed the life of a young man whose hair he cuts— that young man being Max.
Referrals like this are a powerful testament to what Jail to Jobs provides. After all, there’s nothing more convincing than hearing firsthand how someone has been equipped with the tools to beat the odds. Additionally, with regularly scheduled facility tours featuring heartfelt testimonies and lunch prepared by Salt Kitchen’s culinary students, businesses can better understand how their partnership will make a difference.
“The coolest thing is watching the light bulb go off. That’s when they go, ‘Wow, there’s more to my life than I ever thought possible,’” says Mejia. “We see lives change, and there’s nothing better than being a part of that.”
Go to jailtojobs.com to find out how you can donate, volunteer, and support their mission.
“We have the dream team. It’s a bunch of people who are fully committed to this cause, who really want to see participants change their lives and become more.”

Triumph TRANSFORMING TRIALS INTO
MEET THE QUEEN OF RESILIENCE, VIRTUAL LIFE COACH LAURABETH RYAN OF CHEERFUL HEARTS
The power of writing can be a beacon of hope. For one remarkable individual, the act of putting pen to paper became a lifeline during her darkest moments.
LauraBeth Ryan’s journey began when a spinal injury left her bedridden for a decade. Once a hands-on, busy mom of four boys, she found herself grappling with hopelessness. Despite the
“I don't want people to just be inspired by what they read about me. I want them to take pieces and see themselves in it. Whatever they face, they can use these nuggets that I’ve given to turn around and have their own resilience.”
darkness, a spark ignited within her and words burst into her mind, compelling her to write daily. Her first poem, “What Might I Gain,” emerged as a revelation, transforming her perspective on pain into purpose.
“There’s something deep inside of me that won’t give up even in times when I want to give up,” says Ryan. “It’s about finding a way to bounce back and to do it with a good attitude, having that determination and grit to overcome.”
With a laptop and a dream, Ryan proceeded to hire a virtual life coach and take online business courses. She then launched Cheerful Hearts in 2006, a company selling greeting cards that speak to the soul—all while enduring medical treatment.
Amidst battles with divorce and breast cancer, Cheerful Hearts continued to grow beyond cards through coaching and eventually public speaking. It was Ryan’s own coach who encouraged her to follow this path of helping women through depression, health conditions, and the balance of work and family.
“Many feel the pressure that they have to always be strong and don’t need to reach out for support. My approach is coming with compassion and understanding, so they understand there’s no judgment,” says Ryan.
It’s about women supporting women. Ryan’s goal is to provide clients with peace and fulfillment, and let them know that they are doing a great job even when they may not feel good enough.
“It brings me joy to help others find joy,” says Ryan. “I know even if I can only do a handful compared to a lot of people, there’s a ripple effect going out into the world to make it a more positive place.”

JOIN OUR MISSION TO SPREAD WARMTH AND COMPASSION BY NOMINATING SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A CHRISTMAS BLESSING
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way.”
As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the power of community and kindness. This year, through City Lifestyle’s nonprofit, The Kingdom Building Foundation, we will help people who may be struggling quietly without the support they need. But we need your help to find them.
Over the past three years, this campaign has grown into something truly beautiful, touching the lives of more than 150 families nationwide last year alone. Each year, we’ve seen firsthand how generosity can bring relief, hope, and a renewed sense of faith in others.
One person we had the opportunity to help was an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare eye cancer. After he had to undergo chemotherapy and surgery to remove his eye, his doctors recommended a prosthetic one, but insurance wouldn’t cover the cost, calling it “cosmetic.” When we heard his story, we knew we had to help. Because of this campaign, he got his prosthetic eye and a piece of his childhood back with it.
Another was a wife and mother of two who fought a yearlong health battle and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Just days before Christmas, she underwent surgery but passed away due to complications. Before her surgery, she received one of our cards and, in tears, told us this gift gave her some peace, knowing her family would have help in the difficult times ahead. It wasn’t just about the financial support but knowing that someone cared.
These stories remind us why this campaign is so meaningful. It’s not just
about writing checks; it’s about telling people they aren’t forgotten and that someone is there to lend a hand. It’s about giving families a moment of relief when the world feels unbearable.
“We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
Together with Matthew Perry, President, Steven adds that the gratitude from recipients was overwhelming, affirming this tradition’s importance. “We believe God has blessed our company with success,” Matthew adds, “so we want to be a blessing to others.”
We know many more people could use a little help this Christmas, and that’s where you come in. Do you know someone who could use a blessing? We want to hear about them.
To nominate someone, scan the QR code or follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the form in our bio. Nominations are open from November 27 to December 10, 2024. Let’s bring hope to those who need it most.
The City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized. All entries will be read, and selections and the amount given to each recipient will be based on the severity of the need. For more information, visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.com
