Dad...

So, this is a space where we share the delights and discoveries across southern Arizona—great food and drink, scenic vistas. But on this June day, maybe let's step back and take in the epic impact of a specific man who shaped the world as I knew it.

Recognizing key influences in life, I am taking a moment to exercise my personal privilege here. I wish to remember my father, Robert Eugene Herr. He was a large man who built an epic home and life for me and my sister, Christine. He ran the drafting department at Tucson Gas and Electric (Tucson Electric Power) and was beloved by his team of draftsmen.

Stoic is the word that comes to mind. I remember an early summer morning when he and I were out trolling across the glassy surface of Tunnel Lake in Greer. Somehow, I managed to cast my Z-Ray lure, which, oh my, ended up hooked into his right cheek. The sun was barely above the horizon, which was shocking. We headed for shore, lure still dangling from his cheek, loaded our boat into the F-100 Ford truck, and headed for our cabin where my mom a registered nurse would help remove the dangling menace.

It was a quiet and short drive that seemed to take hours, but it was just a few miles. Terror unfolded in my young mind. The three-inch silver lure just dangled there in the early morning light! What have I done? But with a deft touch, my mom Sarah snipped off the barbed end of the treble hooks and slipped the lure from his face. There was no grimace. There were no exclamatory words or actions. The epic crisis was resolved. And I was able to breathe once more. He was the most stoic human I've ever known.

Now, decades later, with our daughters grown and gone, I think back to the impressions and perspectives I brought into their lives. Did I cultivate a sense of stoicism in their perspectives? I'm not sure. But all three fill us with pride and awe. Maybe they somehow picked up on my dad's quiet strength. Certainly, they are some of the strongest people we know. So thanks, Dad. That's generational grit. What a blessing. And today, I'm a few years older than when he was taken by lung cancer. How can I infuse his virtues in my children and, someday, in their children? Quiet love built on strong shoulders is where I will lean.

FOOTHILLS Community Market

Where Local Roots Grow Strong

The vendors truly make the market
Custom hats make a statement

Nestled in the heart of the Catalina Foothills, Foothills Community Markets has grown into more than just a shopping destination—it’s become a movement. Built on a foundation of sustainability, community engagement, and support for small businesses, the market thrives under the passionate leadership of Joe and Darcy Myers. What started as a modest gathering of local vendors has blossomed into a vibrant hub where connections are made, creativity is celebrated, and the local economy flourishes.

The journey of Foothills Community Markets began with a simple yet powerful vision: to create a space where artisans, bakers, and small business owners could not only sell their goods but thrive as part of a larger, connected community. While the market changed ownership several times in its early years, everything changed when Joe and Darcy Myers took the helm in March 2022. They were embarking on a journey to fulfill a lifelong dream. “We wanted to build something that wasn’t just about selling products, but about fostering a sense of belonging and community,” says Darcy Myers.

As former vendors themselves, Joe and Darcy deeply understood the struggles small business owners face—limited exposure, unpredictable sales, and the difficulty of turning creative passion into a sustainable livelihood. Having been on the other side of the table, they knew firsthand what it was like to set up before sunrise, hoping for enough customers to make the long hours worthwhile. This personal experience gave them a unique perspective and a profound empathy for the vendors they now support.

Their goal was simple but ambitious: to build a market that went beyond transactions and became a pillar of the community—a place where vendors felt supported, customers could trust they were buying ethically sourced goods, and where relationships could flourish between buyers and sellers alike. Joe and Darcy set out to create a market by vendors, for vendors.

WHERE TO FIND US

On any given weekend, a stroll through the bustling rows of vendors at Foothills Community Markets offers more than just a shopping experience. The scent of freshly baked bread mingles with the crisp desert air, and conversations flow freely between customers and artisans. It’s a social gathering spot where neighbors reconnect, friendships are formed, and locals take pride in supporting businesses that make our community unique.

“It’s about more than just transactions,” explains Darcy. “We want people to feel like they’re part of something bigger— something that truly matters.”

One of the market’s greatest successes has been its ability to uplift small-scale artisans, many of whom have struggled to find a platform for their work. The market not only provides these entrepreneurs with exposure but also gives them a loyal customer base that values locally made, sustainably sourced products.

The market has also introduced special initiatives that reinforce its commitment to the community. One organization close to the hearts of Darcy and Joe is the Pima Animal Care Center. Through their partnership with Pinups for PACC and events like UnPack the PACC, the couple consistently works to give back to all members of our community, including our four-legged friends.

Foothills Community Markets, located at 7325 N. La Cholla Blvd., is open Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. May through September, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. October through April.

“We wanted to build something that wasn’t just about selling products, but about fostering a sense of belonging and community.”

Despite its success, the market’s journey hasn’t always been easy. Darcy recalls the early struggles of securing permits, recruiting vendors, and ensuring financial stability. “At first, it felt like an uphill battle, but the community rallied behind us,” she says.

Through perseverance, grassroots marketing, and unwavering dedication, the market steadily grew, attracting more vendors and customers each week. Word of mouth became its most powerful ally, with visitors sharing their experiences and encouraging others to explore what has quickly become a Catalina Foothills staple.

“We never want to lose sight of what makes this market special,” says Darcy. “That’s why we’re always looking for ways to improve—while staying true to our roots.”

From its humble beginnings to its current success, Foothills Community Markets stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. It has provided a space for local businesses to thrive, given consumers access to high-quality, locally made products, and created an environment where human connection is just as valuable as commerce.

Darcy believes the market’s true success isn’t measured in sales figures or foot traffic, but in the stories of the people it has touched—the vendor who expanded their business, the farmer who found a loyal customer base, and the families who make visiting the market a cherished weekend tradition.

“At the end of the day, this market belongs to the community,” says Darcy. “And as long as they continue to support it, we’ll keep finding ways to give back.”

Foothills Community Markets isn’t just a place to shop—it’s a place to belong. It’s where passion meets purpose, where the entrepreneurial spirit of Catalina Foothills comes together, and where every purchase tells a story.

Teeing Off In Tucson

Discover Three Premier Golf Courses In The Catalina Foothills

Tucson’s Catalina Foothills region is known for its sweeping desert landscapes, upscale neighborhoods, and proximity to the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains. It’s also home to some of the most scenic and well-appointed golf courses in Southern Arizona. Whether you’re looking for championship-level challenges, a resort-style retreat, or a relaxing round in a vibrant community, these three standout clubs offer unique experiences, stunning views, and a wide array of amenities.

VENTANA CANYON GOLF CLUB

Perched at the edge of the Catalina Mountains, Ventana Canyon Golf Club delivers luxury golf with an unmatched natural backdrop. This exclusive club—open to guests through the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort— features two 18-hole courses designed by acclaimed architect Tom Fazio.

The Mountain Course is a desert classic, known for its dramatic elevation changes and jaw-dropping views. The signature third hole, requiring a tee shot over a rocky canyon, is among the most photographed in the region. The Canyon Course offers a more forgiving layout but maintains the stunning scenery, weaving through desert arroyos and high-desert flora.

Highlights include:

• Two 18-hole Fazio-designed championship courses

• Comprehensive practice facilities, including a driving range, putting green, and short game area

• Access to the Loews Ventana Canyon Resort with full spa, dining, and lodging options

• Golf school and private instruction available year-round

This club is ideal for those seeking both challenge and indulgence, with service and facilities that match the spectacular setting.

EL CONQUISTADOR GOLF CLUB

Located in nearby Oro Valley, El Conquistador Golf Club is a local favorite that combines mountain vistas with accessible play. The facility features three courses: Conquistador, Cañada, and the seasonal Pusch Ridge 9-hole course.

The Conquistador Course is a traditional par-71 layout, offering wide fairways, scenic water features, and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The Cañada Course plays slightly more difficult, with elevation changes and tighter angles, challenging golfers to shape shots and navigate desert elements. During the winter season,

the Pusch Ridge Course provides a quick, 9-hole option tucked into the slopes of the Santa Catalinas. Highlights include:

• Three distinct courses for all skill levels

• Full practice range, putting greens, and short game area

• Club and cart rentals for visitors

• Casual on-site dining with patio seating and Catalina views

El Conquistador is ideal for both serious golfers and casual players, offering flexibility and a friendly, community-oriented atmosphere.

SaddleBrooke Golf Club

Set within the active adult community of SaddleBrooke, this golf club offers a peaceful, parkland-style experience with stunning views and a relaxed pace of play. The facility includes 27 holes, divided into three 9-hole courses—Tucson,

SaddleBrooke, and Catalina—that can be combined in various pairings for a full 18-hole round.

The Tucson Course is known for its strategic bunkering and elevated greens, requiring precision and smart shot selection. The SaddleBrooke Course emphasizes course management and features several water hazards. The Catalina Course, the most scenic of the trio, offers closer views of the mountain range and includes several memorable par-3 holes.

Highlights include:

• 27 holes of golf with flexible combinations

• Modern clubhouse and fully stocked pro shop

• Regular tournaments, clinics, and social events for members and guests

• Multiple dining venues and access to community recreation facilities

The Catalina Foothills is more than just a beautiful part of Tucson—it’s a hub for golf enthusiasts seeking variety, challenge, and relaxation. From the luxury and drama of Ventana Canyon to the scenic versatility of El Conquistador and the community feel of SaddleBrooke, each course brings something special to the table.

For those ready to tee off with a backdrop of cactus-lined fairways and mountain silhouettes, there’s no better place to play.

Flank Steak

Three Mouthwatering Recipes To Try This Summer

A culinary chameleon, flank steak is happy to take on the flavors of its marinade or rub. Perfect as leftovers, here are three ways to make the most of this decadent dish. Perfect by itself, with a creamy sauce, or added into a sandwich or salad.

Grilled Flank Steak with Cucumber-Yogurt Sauce

Four Servings (with leftovers)

Ingredients

For the Steaks:

• 1 1/2 cups fresh flat-leaf parsley, coarsely chopped

• 1/3 cup fresh mint, chopped

• 3 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped

• 8 medium garlic cloves, peeled

• 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 lemons)

• 1/4 cup tamari sauce

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

• 2 flank steaks (about 3 lbs total), trimmed of excess fat

For the Sauce:

• 1 English cucumber (about 3/4 lb)

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 cup plain Greek yogurt

• 1 teaspoon minced garlic

• 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, toasted and lightly crushed

• 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

• 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

• Pinch of cayenne pepper

• 1/2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

• Pepper, to taste

Directions

Set aside two tablespoons of chopped parsley. In a bowl, combine the remaining parsley, mint, rosemary, and garlic. Add the lemon juice, tamari, one teaspoon salt, and one teaspoon pepper. Stir in the olive oil and mix until emulsified. Place the steaks in a baking dish and pour marinade over them. Marinate for at least four hours or overnight, turning occasionally.

Cut the cucumber in half lengthwise, then slice into 1/8-inch thick half-moons. Toss with 1/2 teaspoon salt and let sit for 10 minutes. Rinse, drain, and pat dry. In a bowl, mix the cucumber with yogurt, garlic, cumin, lemon zest and juice, cayenne, olive oil, and reserved parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Remove the steaks from the fridge one hour before grilling. Take the steaks out of the marinade and wipe off the excess. Season with salt and pepper. Grill over medium-high heat for five to six minutes until seared. Flip and grill three to five minutes more, until medium-rare (125°F). Let rest for 10 minutes. Slice across the grain and serve with the yogurt sauce.

Open-Face Flank Steak Sandwiches with Herbed Goat Cheese and Tomatoes

Four Servings

Ingredients

For the Goat Cheese:

• 4 ounces goat cheese (1/2 cup), at room temperature

• 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

• 2 teaspoons lemon zest

• 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

• Salt and pepper to taste

For the Sandwiches:

• 4 slices sourdough bread, cut 1-inch thick

• 1 garlic clove, halved

• Extra-virgin olive oil

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1/2 pound heirloom tomatoes, sliced 1/2-inch thick

• 1/2 pound leftover flank steak, thinly sliced

• 2 ounces shaved parmesan

Directions

In a small bowl, mix the goat cheese, parsley, basil, lemon zest, and garlic together. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

Position the oven rack five to six inches from the broiler and preheat broiler to high. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and rub one side of each with the garlic. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Broil for one to two minutes per side until toasted.

Spread the goat cheese mixture on the oiled sides of the toast. Top with tomato slices, season with salt and pepper, then layer on the sliced steak. Drizzle with olive oil and finish with shaved parmesan. Broil two to three minutes, until the sandwiches begin to brown and bubble. Lower the rack if needed to prevent burning.

Arugula Salad with Grilled Steak and Green Beans

Four to Six Servings

Ingredients

For the Beans and Mushrooms:

• 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 4 cups sliced red onions

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 pound shiitake mushrooms, stemmed and sliced 1/2inch thick

• 1 (15.5-ounce) can green beans, rinsed

• 1 1/2 tablespoons sherry vinegar

• 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped

• 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

For the Vinaigrette:

• 1/4 cup sherry vinegar

• 2 tablespoons chopped shallots

• 1 tablespoon dijon mustard

• 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

• Salt and pepper to taste

To Assemble:

• 1/2 pound baby arugula (about 10 cups)

• 1 pound leftover flank steak, thinly sliced

Directions

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it simmers. Add the onions, season with salt and pepper, and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring occasionally until caramelized, about 10–12 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until soft, about five more minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the beans, sherry vinegar, thyme, and red pepper flakes. Season to taste and let cool.

In a small bowl, combine vinegar, shallots, and mustard. Whisk in olive oil in a steady stream. Season with salt and pepper.

Toss the arugula with enough vinaigrette to lightly coat and season with salt and pepper. Place the arugula in a serving bowl. Top with the bean and mushroom mixture and sliced steak. Drizzle with remaining vinaigrette as desired.

Midtown Mercantile Merchants—A Kaleidoscope of Unique Treasures

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MAKSELAN

Our very own "Finder"
Emily Makselan

There’s no better place in Tucson for “Found Finds” than Midtown Mercantile Merchants.

Midtown is a local vintage and antique marketplace made up of hundreds of independent vendors, each with their booth. While Midtown Mercantile Merchants is located in the city at 3330 E. Speedway, many of the Merchants reside in the foothills, including me!

Midtown Merchants Mercantile has been a staple in Tucson for nine years. This time last year, they packed up and moved down Speedway into the old Bookman’s space. Moving over 100 vendors into the new 24,000-square-foot space in the Rancho shopping center took three days. The complex’s exterior has been undergoing a

makeover for the last year, with completion of their part of the mall expected later this year.   Owner Tami Mitchell used to run a design and staging business. When another local antique mall closed back in 2014, she decided to open a brick-and-mortar store. She started her store with the goal of creating community.

Distinctive, one-of-a-kind furnishing around every corner
This mercantile is all that it is "quacked" up to be
Owner Tami Mitchell surveys her domain briming with treasures

She wants everyone to come in and feel like they are a part of the store. Aside from the community of vendors she has brought together under one roof, she also hosts local events in the space, often partnering with other local businesses.

At Midtown Mercantile Merchants, you’ll find an ever-changing, wide array of items: Everything from vintage clothing and furniture to art and jewelry!  Midtown offers shoppers an alternative to the shopping experience at big-box stores.  It offers you a chance to hunt for unique items to fill your home and closet with, rather than the mass-produced items that are everywhere these days. Strolling the rows of vendors at Midtown should be on everyone’s radar this summer as you hunt for activities to get out of the heat!

Follow Midtown on social media at  @mmm_tucson to stay current on all their events, including when they offer storewide sales. You can also view the store’s happenings and sales on their website,  midtownmm.com .

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA

Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.” Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life.

So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime.

Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estateland, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape—and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses. CONTINUED >

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-squarefeet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent—ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).

For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.

Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-of-theart accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-emfrom-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.

DRINK & DINE

Montana’s best kept secret? Our hideaway chefs, making waves from the Montana wilderness. Chef Brandon Cunningham, Executive Chef at the Green O, is a James Beard Award finalist whose creations at the Social Haus are highly curated through an 8-course tasting menu. Other highly trained and talented chefs like Chef Brett Edlund, Chef Ben Scott, Executive Pastry Chef Krystle Swenson, and Sunny Jin, the General Manager of Food and Beverage, are part of the intricate patchwork of the culinary experience at Pomp, Trough, Shed, Camp and the notable Chuck Wagon—a summertime treat where guests can ride a hay wagon along the banks of the Blackfoot River for an Old West-inspired chuck wagon dinner. The menu ranges from all-natural chicken and Tomahawk ribeye to fresh vegetables grilled over an open flame campfire.

HOW TO GET HERE

Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.
