CELEBRATING MEXICAN
During Mexico’s Fiestas Patrias--or National Holiday Celebrations-- the Mexican people celebrate their national pride, independence and culture. On September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo gave his famous “Grito”-- or “shout out”-- to his parish in the small town of Dolores, Mexico, speaking against Spanish colonial rule. It is a very important part of Mexico’s history, as is their fabulous food! Mexican cooking had its beginnings in the culture of the Aztec and Mayan peo ple whose diets were based on corn and beans. In fact, corn was so revered that it was used in ceremonial worship of the Aztec goddess of fertility. As early as the 16th Century, the con quistadores introduced cows, sheep, rice and spices to Mexico. Later, the French, Austrians and other Europeans visiting the New World would leave their imprint on its culture and its food sup ply. Today, Mexican cuisine reflects all of these influences, contrasting simple and sophisticated dishes, blending the new with the old. FIESTAS PATRIAS

Black Broccoli
ARTICLE BY ANNA MAYNARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES MARTIN JR.
INSPIRED BY | STYLE + BEAUTY24
In the wise words of Nick Arcade (@_blackbroccoli_), “limitation forces innovation”. Establishing his clothing brand, Black Broccoli, around this principle, Arcade creates upcycled pieces that represent his resilience and honor his culture. Completely self-taught, his talents have catapulted him into opening his storefront on Fourth Avenue in 2019, where he seeks out inspiration from all places, especially music. Channeling his artistic style through film and music videos, James Martin (@jamesfrom17th) taps into emotion and diverse natural beauty behind the lens of a camera. Connecting with his own emotions through music, describing it as, “a cultural equalizer”, he works to capture those commonalities between vastly different people that music helps to create.

“Most people get their fashion influence from musicians”, co-owner Jake Sullivan remarked. Watching all walks of life pass through the doors of Wooden Tooth Records, the intersection of fashion and music is viewed every day. Records of all genres and from all eras line the walls, guaran teeing that there is something for everyone. This showcasing of diversity is not only evident in the store’s displays, but also in the models themselves.
Through meetings, shopping trips, and hours of planning, the power of music quickly emerged as the overarching theme within each photo’s story. In order to sell the messaging, selecting the perfect location was everything. Wooden Tooth Records, a staple in the music community of Tucson, graciously opened their space to house this creative endeavor.
Meeting by chance at the Black Broccoli store front and further connecting at 'The Cooldown', an event hosted by DeVille, a shared love of music brought these three creative forces together.

Tommy DeVille (@ogtommyd) is a self-pro claimed wearer of many hats. Sharing his talents in many mediums from running his own clothing brand, to working as a stylist, and, of course, as, “a certified forklift driver”, DeVille is a well-con nected pillar of the artistic community. A musician himself, he believes that, “all arts have a home with each other” and has big dreams to establish a loca tion in Tucson that can house the intersectionality of the creative arts, and the artists alongside them.

INSPIRED BY | STYLE + BEAUTY Nikki Housler (@mommakity), Mya Suter (@myaelizabethaz), and Allure Barcelo (@uhhlore) proudly wore each handcrafted and meticulously styled“Portraitslook. and music are my passion”, Martin explained. From behind the lens of his camera, Martin captures the beauty in his subjects’ differ ences. Each model, handpicked for their representation of uniqueness and beauty, furthered each individual’s personal story of unity through music. For him, diversity is essential behind the camera as well as in front of it. As a photographer, diversity within his network is central to his mis sion. His flow of ideas is stimulated by surrounding himself with people hailing from different backgrounds and worldviews, and the collection shown is evident of the power that a diverse range of perspective has. Arcade’s vision for Black Broccoli’s fall collection centers around his own unique perspective on fashion. Describing the branding of Black Broccoli as, “a celebration of [his] culture and an ode to things the [he] hold[s] dear”, the collection of nine looks produced is a testament to his drive to give a piece of himself, and a piece that is unapologetically himself, to the public. Transcending above the fast-paced trend cycles and focusing on creating clothing that can work in any era, Arcade’s creativity flows through “trends” that he believes will always have a place in modern fashion.
As fall quickly approaches, both Arcade and DeVille foresee a resur gence of the urban, streetwear aesthetic that ruled the 90’s. The Black Broccoli fall collection flawlessly captures not only the rise of a new fall trend, but the beauty in reclaiming things that others would have simply cast off. For Arcade and DeVille, upcycling is not just a sustainable trend, but a necessity in their upbringing.

putting in long hours of work in their respective fields, their creative mark has been placed within the Tucson community. Their passion and drive to achieve high goals takes them in new and exciting directions, with a powerful soundtrack to match. The marriage of fashion and music, and the sense of togetherness those creative outlets provide people shines through each image displayed.
Martin hopes, “When a 20 year old photographer in 2052 decides to do a shoot that revolves around music in the 2020’s I want to be someone that can inspire them. And to do that, I guess I’ll just keep taking pictures.”
“I’ve always found beauty in the things dis carded”, DeVille explained. Growing up shopping at thrift stores with his mother, he cites her as a major stylistic inspiration. Arcade shared a simi lar sentiment, describing how he began his jour ney as a designer through the means that he had: taking apart clothing he found at thrift stores and reworking pieces that others would view as waste into items people will keep in their closet for years to come. Leaving a legacy, in one way or another, is central to Arcade, DeVille, and Martin. Through each per son’s unique journeys of overcoming adversity and

Petra Juarez finds her artistic inspiration in the smallest of objects. While hiking, she stops to pick up a seed pod on the trail. Where one person may see just a seed pod, Juarez sees her next base for creation. Carrying on a skill set passed down to her from her husband’s grandmother, that little seed pod will be cast in metal and trans formed into a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. Traveling down a one-way dirt road, Juarez’s studio blends into the natural beauty of the desert. Every inch of the space is reminiscent of the natural beauty just outside its walls, and her creations carry on the organic quality of the sur rounding area. Pottery and jewelry are lovingly displayed for her buyers, with no two pieces looking alike.
“I’ve always done beading and upcycling and things like that.” Juarez explains. Her passion for creativity extended through her childhood, and Juarez’s talent in a variety of mediums is evident throughout her space. Over 20 years of pottery experience have honed her ability, with five of those years dedicated to working full-time through her art. Juarez channels natural imperfections in cre ating her work, saying, “It’s important to me that everything looks handmade.” Her connection to an organic aesthetic is evident in each item, and is especially prevalent in her seed pod jewelry. Her process, called lost wax casting, was taught to her by her husband’s grandmother, and accomplished jeweler, Lynne Tiemeier. With over 55 years of experience, Tiemeier gave her casting equipment to Juarez following her battle with Parkinson's. Each time the equipment is used, Juarez continues the tradition of Tiemeier's work by channeling her unique influence. Passed down from her husband’s grandmother, Juarez keeps the practice of metal casting jewelry alive through this equipment.

Channeling the design elements of pre-colonial Hispanic pottery, her clay creations share the same organic beauty found in her seed pod jewelry. The same care and hand made qualities are present in each medium Juarez works in. Juarez’s pieces can be found on her Instagram page (@ petraclayandmetal) and information on how to shop is located on her website. Buyers are welcomed into her stu dio space by booking an appointment, and are then free to look at each special piece. Her work is also available for pur chase at a number of local businesses and nurseries, such as Arizona Poppy and Ponderosa Cactus.
Looking towards the future, Juarez’s work will be featured in Shirt Shop Mercantile, a combination restaurant and retail store set to open soon in downtown Tucson.

Lost wax casting is a labor of love, both in its process and by working with such delicate materials. A seed pod is coated in wax and plaster to make a mold, which is then fired in a jewelry kiln. Once the seed pod burns out and the negative space remains, the mold is placed into a centrifu gal caster and the liquid silver is poured in. After "pickling", cleaning, and buffing the creation, the silver cast of the seed pod remains, with each small detail perfectly visible.
According to Juarez, the imperfections of her work create interest, and she strives to make irregularity beautiful.
FASHION FORWARD | LIFE + CULTURE
“I think nature does it best,” Juarez remarked, carefully laying out different seed pods and their matching neck laces. Even the pieces that came from the same species of plant look vastly different, showcasing their natural beauty.

Juarez’s collection of seed pods can be found in a set of drawers on her desk, waiting to be turned into beautiful jewelry.

After Lopez’s passing in 2016, her legacy is car ried on by her daughters, a dedicated board, and leagues of all-ages volunteers. Occupying two rooms at Wakefield Middle School, the space is piled high with pajamas in all sizes and books for all ages. The hands-on operation is in the incredibly capable hands of Dr. Patti Lopez and Dr. Stacie Emert, folding paja mas as the conversation flowed. Both women hail from long and esteemed careers in the educational field, and recognize the importance of placing books into the hands of children. Dr. Emert, the board president, explained that in unstable situations, the children are incredibly limited in what they can take with them, sometimes having no chance to pack at all. Giving them some thing that is expressly theirs, Dr. Lopez added, allows them to feel a sense of ownership and stability amid an unstable environment. Since a book is small and easily transportable, Dr. Emert remarked that, “it can go with them wherever they have to go”. With this
Graciela Lopez understood the power that a cozy pair of pajamas and a good book holds. Escaping Cuba to chase the American dream with her two daughters, she ensured that her children were never without those objects. She believed in the impor tance of access to pajamas and books so much that she worked tirelessly to provide them for any child who may be without them. In 2013, her and her two daughters founded the Angel Heart Pajama Project to pay this belief forward. Working with organizations from Tucson to Yuma and practically everywhere in between, the Angel Heart Pajama Project has provided between 37,000 and 38,000 care packages of pajamas, books, and “cuddle pillows” to children in need. Between 25 emergency closets and groups such as the Marana Food Bank and the Tucson Police Department, the care packages are distributed through their individual programs, providing comfort and support for children at a hyper-local level.

philosophy in mind, both women ensure that there is absolutely no shortage of books for all ages and reading levels. Through receiving donations from the community and supplementing through well-deserved grants, there is an abundance of support from a wide variety of avenues.
MUST SEE | LOCAL SERVICES
One such avenue came from someone not even involved with the Angel Heart Pajama Project! This story is shared with permission, however, names are not given in order to protect privacy. Dr. Lopez shared how their impact reached a member of the community, leading to them being unknowingly entered, and winning, a community service grant competition held by GEICO. The person who entered them, a GEICO employee, felt a deep connection with their mission due to their own childhood experiences and was inspired to help in their own unique way. The mission extends beyond just the children the Angel Heart Pajama Project serves, but within the area as well.
Dr. Lopez, the executive director, described, “a tre mendous spirit of community” that the organization has found through their service. From a club at Catalina Foothills High School arranging book and pajama drives, to sponsored “Little Free Libraries” that are meticulously taken care of by volunteers, the Tucson community has embraced the mission of the Angel Heart Pajama Project with open arms and open hearts.
The Angel Heart Pajama Project is currently accept ing donations of books and pajamas for children and young adults, spanning from birth to age 22. They are seeking volunteers to help sew cuddle pillows, and are looking to gift a brand new "Little Free Library" to a member of the community. For more information on volunteering opportunities and upcoming events, they can be found online and on Facebook at Angel Heart Pajama Project.

Each care package sent out by the Angel Heart Pajama Project includes pajamas, age-appropriate books, and a handmade "cuddle pillow". Residing at Wakefield Mid dle School, the storage shelves at Angel Heart Pajama Project overflow with generous donations.
