SECURING YOUR JUMBO LOAN, FOR YOUR JUMBO HOUSE. There are spectacular homes in Southwest Florida that will turn your dreams into a reality and make you feel like you are living in your favorite vacation destination. The market for high end mortgages has grown considerably. The application process for a high-end mortgage is the same as a conforming one with a couple notable exceptions, the most important being the approval process. Due to the fact that jumbo mortgages aren’t eligible investments for government-sponsored enterprises like Freddie Mac and Fannie May, lenders take on additional risk with this type of loan.

JUMBO LOAN APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: • Great credit with a score above 720 • A debt-to-income ratio preferably less than 40% • Significant reserves and liquid assets • A little as 20% down for primary residence •Loans from $424,101 up to $2 million

Lifestyle Letter

Those Who Give

W

eeks ago I had this letter finished but had to rewrite it after Irma passed through. I can't tell you how many people have said to me, "We really dodged a bullet," and, yes, we did. This was my first hurricane experience, and it's such a mix of emotions. I've never had a time in my life where everything literally stops. Everything is put on the back burner except the safety of your family and friends. "Will I have a home in two days? Where will I find gas and water?" Part of me is so thankful that our prayers were answered and we had very minimal damage to our town. On the other hand, I feel almost guilty about our good fortune, seeing other parts of Florida suffer such devastation. However, this has all reminded me that there are still good people in the world, people who want to help each other, especially in Cape Coral. I was truly blown away by how our neighbors came together and helped one another. There are so many examples of kindness—people putting up storm shutters for the elderly, loaning each other tools and plywood and, post-storm, collecting items to help victims here locally and in the Keys. And what about our brave police, firefighters and medical personnel who put their lives in danger to stay and help others? This need to nurture and take care of one another spread far beyond Florida. People everywhere were watching The Weather Channel and praying for us. I ended up driving all the way to Ohio and can't tell you how many conversations I had with total strangers along the way. A lady in a restaurant in Ohio felt the need to hug me! On my drive back, I saw countless numbers of utility trucks with plates from all over the country, coming down to restore power. This ugly storm brought out a beautiful side of people. What if this desire to take care of each other, this sense of compassion and kindness could last all year? For many people in our town, this is what they do. They dedicate their time, energy and resources to helping those in need, all the time. In this season of Thanksgiving, we want to make sure to recognize organizations like the Cape Coral Community Foundation, Cape Coral Caring Center, Samaritan Health & Wellness and Homes for Heroes. These are just a few of the many groups that make such a difference in the lives of others.

Good Times

Floridians Come Together In Hard Times

Millions of Floridians evacuated their homes during the threat of Hurricane Irma. One town that showed the true meaning of Southern hospitality was Camden, Alabama. Offering personal phone numbers, paying lodging fees and providing home-cooked meals were just a few ways they shared love with their Florida neighbors.

Now, we are not only sparing our patients a significant expense but potentially saving them from the fastest-growing cancer in the country and reminding those same people that we are the dermatologist to turn to for all skin care needs.” Every skin check provided by Florida Skin Center involves a dermascope, a microscope-like tool that allows doctors and physician assistants alike to inspect lesions for cancerous characteristics. MORE THAN CAPE CORAL ART LEAGUE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN THE CAPE

The Cape Coral Community Foundation and the Community Redevelopment Agency. This is just one of the many exciting projects coming out of the Cape Coral Art League. Chartered in 1965 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), the CCAL has continued to grow through membership, grants and donations. Located on Cultural Parkway near the Historical Museum and Cultural Park Theater, the league offers a way for residents and visitors to express themselves through art. There is something for everyone, including classes, workshops, art exhibits, children’s classes and a newly renovated gift shop President Barbara Magner was visiting her sister in Cape Coral five years ago and came in for one of the popular Wednesday Open Painting afternoons. The more, the merrier is the theme here, bringing together local people who love to paint. “There are usually 20-30 people in the room, and the atmosphere is so friendly and upbeat,” she says. Barbara says the experience was part of what made her want to move to Cape Coral. Years later, she has served as secretary and is now president. Wednesday Open Painting from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. is hosted by Pat Gilbert, who Barbara calls the “hostess with the mostest!” It doesn’t matter your level of experience; all are welcome to come and do their own thing within an encouraging group experience. What really makes Barbara light up is when she talks about the children’s programs. “The classes started with four or five kids and next thing we knew, we were up to as many as 24 students per session,” she says. She loves sharing art with children and feels it’s so important for kids to be able to express what they are feeling through art. She talks about times when they even walked next door to the soccer fields to pass out flyers and promote programs.

Cape Coral Lifestyle | November 2017

Currently, Barbara teaches Student Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It's open to the community and is offered for a donation of just $10 which includes materials. This program is for younger children through middle school age. Hal Klingler, who has a master of fine arts, teaches older children through adults in the adjacent studio. He has mastered all forms of art and mediums and is a very generous teacher working with the same parameters of $10 per class, materials included. All the money collected from Student Sundays goes to the league to replenish supplies and promote programs. Of all the beautiful projects coming out of the CCAL, the real masterpiece seems to be the sense of community, friendship and the way they are bringing joy to residents' lives through art. ave you ever had that nagging feeling that something is just not right about your child’s performance in school? You know your child is smart, yet despite working so much harder than his friends, he is struggling. I am here to tell you: Parents, you are not alone! There is a condition called dyslexia that impacts 20 percent of our population. Dyslexia is a language processing disorder that affects all four areas of language processing: oral speech, auditory processing, reading and spelling/written composition. There is no easy fix, and telling your child to try harder, slow down or read more will not help. That is because dyslexia is neurobiological in origin. That means the brain structure of dyslexics is different. People with dyslexia learn differently. Dyslexic students need proper intervention. The good news is there are many programs out there. The bad news is you won’t find those programs in many of our school systems. The program I use is The Barton Reading and Spelling System, BartonReading.com.

“You taught me new ways of how to spell words and help with my reading,” Taylor, a student, says. “I went from a C student to straight-A’s! I am very thankful for you and for my mom having me tested.”

Let me emphasize: teachers are not at the root of the issue. Teachers have rules they must follow, which are set by the U.S. Department of Education, the Florida Department of Education and the Lee County School District. That is the place to apply pressure for change! My dream is that someday, dyslexic children will get the proper programs of instruction to succeed–for free—within our public school. We are not there yet! In 2015, I opened a business called Believe Tutoring LLC. My vision: To spread awareness, to support parents, and to provide the right program for kids with dyslexia. I offer a rate that is half that which is charged by other providers. I have crossed paths with 20 courageous and amazing kids over the past two years. Working together, we have achieved success. “You taught me new ways of how to spell words and help with my reading," Taylor, a

student, says. "I went from a C student to straight-A’s! I am very thankful for you and for my mom having me tested." “I can't say it enough how thankful we are to have found someone like you to help our daughter," Carlos, a parent says. "She has learned grammatical rules, study techniques and gained confidence. This has been the piece of the puzzle that has helped us learn and move ahead.” If you are a parent who can relate to this story, a leader within the school district who is interested in spreading awareness through your staff or simply an avid community member looking to support my mission by becoming a tutor or providing monetary contribution, please feel free to reach out to me via email at BelieveTutoring@gmail.com. Together, we can make a huge difference! I believe! Forward march!

SAMARITAN HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER INC.

SAMARITAN HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTER INC.

What can you spare to help someone afford health care? Affordable health care is out of reach for millions of working Americans. In Lee County, Samaritan Health and Wellness Center Inc. provides affordable primary health care and counseling for the working uninsured and underinsured. This nonprofit, faith-based family medicine clinic receives no money from the government, and its sustainability depends on donations along with the small fees paid by patients. An appointment to establish care at Samaritan costs $55. Once established, patients pay $40 for follow-up visits. Donations make up 52 percent of Samaritan’s annual operating budget, so every dollar helps. Without the generosity of individuals, organizations, churches and businesses, the clinic would close. In November, Samaritan celebrates three years of caring for nearly 4,500 individuals in Lee County and the surrounding area. Two licensed, nationally board-certified nurse practitioners and three licensed mental health counselors provide holistic care of the bodies, minds and spirits of patients, Monday through Friday, in a Christ-centered environment where everyone is welcome. What can you spare to make sure others can afford their health care? For more information or to get involved, go to CapeSamaritan.com.

HOMES FOR HEROES HOMES FOR HEROES

Quite often the people who protect us the most in our own hometown don’t get the appreciation they deserve. Homes for Heroes Inc. was established after 9/11 to give back and say thank you to local heroes for all they do. The program provides Hero Rewards, which is an easy way for these individuals to save money when buying or selling a home. With gratitude, the program honors the selfless service of true heroes—firefighters, law enforcement, military (active, reserves and veterans), health care workers, emergency medical services and teachers—by giving back. Who is considered a hero? Any of these professions, current or former, qualify to receive Hero Rewards. There's no cost to participate in the program, no red tape and no hidden fees. How much the hero can save varies depending on the individual, but the average savings to most is around $1,500. The organization has saved local heroes over $27 million since its inception. The organization has also started a foundation, and every time a hero buys or sells a home, a portion is donated back to help other heroes in need. To see if you qualify and take advantage of the program, visit HomesForHeroes.com or contact Pat Eberle, a local affiliate of the program at 612.384.6018. CONTINUED >

THOSE WHO GIVE (CON TI N U ED)

CAPE CORAL CARING CENTER CAPE CORAL CARING CENTER

The Cape Coral Caring Center is a 501(c)(3) emergency food pantry, serving residents of Cape Coral that are dealing with things like serious illness or sudden job loss. The center has been assisting residents for 28 years, helping more than 300,000 people. The Cape Coral Caring Center has a staff of three, with a staff of more than 100 volunteers. With its reliance on volunteers, the center's administrative costs are very low. Every client is interviewed, and the need is determined. All income-qualified clients will leave with food and the center never limits the number of families it helps each day, even if it is low on food. The Cape Coral Caring Center believes that making sure food is available to those in need is the center's problem, not the problem of the family who may have hungry children at home. The Cape Coral Caring Center also helps with LCEC bills, clothing vouchers provided by Kiwanis Thrift Stores, bus passes for job searches and resume building. The center also has a day called “Backpack for Community Caring” where it provides complete backpacks for children in all grades. It will provide around 600 families with a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, including turkey or ham. The center will also have a Christmas store for families with young children. Parents are allowed to pick exactly what their children want. The Cape Coral Caring Center always appreciates food donations, perishable and nonperishable. It has what is called buying power, which means every dollar donated to the center is worth up to $8! For more info or to get involved, visit CapeCoralCaringCenter.org.

IvaMae: THE BOOK OF MOM

LOCAL AUTHOR ROBIN ANNE GRIFFITHS SHARES A GLIMPSE OF HER RECENTLY PUBLISHED BOOK

Iva Mae: The Book of Mom By Robin Anne Griffiths After all the years of planning and changing her own funeral arrangements, she was gone. Robin sat in her home office in what felt like the aftermath of a long hard journey. She was thinking back on Iva Mae’s life, and found it hard to believe her mother would only be in her memories from now on. Iva Mae had been planning her own funeral since Robin was a child. No one really knew why she was so obsessed with the details, but it was a regular topic of conversation, especially as she grew older. Robin and Sandy, her older sister, made fun of it, and it became a regular joke between them and their youngest sister, Tammy. At ninety-one, Iva Mae had finally gone to meet her maker, and the family put together the pieces of the plans that had been made over the years. Robin believed they had done a good job under the circumstances. She also believed that although her mother would have been pleased, she would have been a little disappointed as well. Over the years, Iva Mae’s funeral plans had ranged from a chicken dinner picnic at the cemetery with her favorite gospel singer of the moment to her being flown first class from her final home in Fort Worth to the small cemetery near where she grew up on a farm outside Labette City, Kansas, which had fewer than a hundred people. Iva Mae envisioned all her friends and family arriving for the preaching: it would be her last chance to have all the sinners in her life saved. Iva Mae had not been an easy person. As Robin went through her mother’s personal items, she started to piece together a life filled with family, needs, sorrow, and happiness. It all began in 1922, on the farm in Labette County. Looking at Iva Mae’s long life, Robin was amazed at all the different things her mother

About the Author Robin Anne Griffith’s life adventure began in Parsons, Kansas, and continued in Springfield, Missouri, until her love for the tropics led her to Southwest Florida. The lust for adventure has always been at the center of her existence. From running marathons, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to traveling the globe, Robin has never feared pushing the limits. Now filling her days are all types of outdoor activities, her family, writing, helping others and looking for the story in the lives of the people she meets. Robin and her husband, Jim, live in Bokeelia, Florida, along with their rescue dog, Tiberius, and eclectus parrot, Kozmo.

had experienced over ninety-one years: so much change, most of which she had accepted without a blink. But regarding the few things she did not accept, there was no room for negotiation. Iva Mae had shared stories of her life and growing up on the farm with her family. Robin was going through the metal box that held her mother’s important papers, such as burial plans, special photos of her with family members, and a brief autobiography. This box of miscellaneous papers had been around a long time. Robin could remember it from childhood. As Iva Mae aged, she made sure that Robin and Sandy always knew where it was and whether anything new had been added or changed. But the contents still were surprising. This is the story of Iva Mae Treadway. As a young Kansas farm girl in the 1920s and ’30s, Iva Mae grew up without electricity or indoor plumbing, and faced numerous hardships ranging from a devastating house fire to her mother’s death when Iva Mae was fifteen. Her adult years were plagued by health problems, money worries and two rocky marriages. Yet through it all, her faith in God, ability to find happiness, and love of family never faltered. Iva Mae: The Book of Mom offers a glimpse into America’s rural past and chronicles the struggles and triumphs of a woman who did not let fear stop her from discovering what life had to offer. Known for her cooking, love of holidays, and adventurous, ready-to-go spirit, Iva Mae lived her ninety-one years to the fullest. This is her story. Iva Mae: The Book of Mom is available online on Amazon and Barnes & Noble and at PJ Boox in Fort Myers.

T

he Cape Coral Animal Shelter (CCAS) organization is progressing forward in its efforts to build a new no-kill shelter with veterinary clinic in Cape Coral. The possibilities are endless to save 40,000+ animals in a 20-year span! To date, nearly $1.4 million has been raised in donations and capital campaign pledges. The target goal is to reach $2.2 million in funds as construction is planned to begin in winter 2017 with a projected grand opening in the spring of 2018. The future location of the Cape Coral Animal Shelter will be 325 SW Second Ave. in Cape Coral, just north of Lake Kennedy. Building plans are underway and moving through proper channels and phases of the building process. Fundraising efforts include dedicated events and a capital campaign aimed at providing a unique opportunity to support the shelter and create a family legacy. The capital campaign includes naming rights opportunities for dog kennels, cat rooms, tree of life family name plaques for trees in the memory garden and outdoor play areas. Another way to help the shelter is to enroll in the monthly automatic donation program. Think of a pilot flying using a compass instead of GPS. You want the best pilot, utilizing the latest technology, flying the most advanced jet! Dr. Tyson’s background as a biomedical engineer at Johns Hopkins University has allowed him to participate in the development of femtosecond cataract laser surgery. Dr. Tyson performed the first Bladeless Laser Cataract Surgery in Collier County at the Naples Premier Surgery Center. This system is designed to be the safest and most effective way to customize your cataract removal and correct your astigmatism.

The LENSAR™ laser, now able to work with the Cassini corneal modeling system, combines a high resolution 3-D CSI imaging device, giving a fully automated analysis of the cornea and lens surfaces. It offers significant advantages to traditional cataract surgery, giving a customized mapping of the front and back surface of the eye, which can offer a more precise correction of astigmatism. “We offer our patients the most advanced technology available in the market for their Cataract surgical experience. Achieving the best visual outcomes for our patients vision is priceless” -Farrell C. Tyson, MD, FACS
