Exploring Life’s Beautiful Layers

Dear Readers,

Welcome to our July issue, themed Explore, a celebration of curiosity, adventure, and the incredible journeys that shape who we are.

This month, we invite you to dive into stories that inspire exploration on many levels,  from the landscapes we travel to, to the creative frontiers we push within ourselves.

Meet Jo Westfall, a truly remarkable artist who reminds us that creativity is a living, breathing force. Jo’s fearless blending of materials, mediums, and ideas shows us how playfulness and curiosity unlock new worlds, and how even the smallest scrap can spark something extraordinary.

Speaking of journeys, set sail with Maria DiSanti, whose passion for travel isn’t just about destinations, but about crafting meaningful, authentic experiences. Whether navigating the challenges of a global pandemic or tailoring custom adventures for every kind of traveler, Maria’s story is one of resilience, heart, and discovery.

For those who seek exploration closer to home, discover the story behind Cherry Blend Coffee Roasters,  a family who turned their passion for bold, pure coffee into a thriving business. They prove that sometimes the best adventures happen right in your own backyard, fueled by dedication and a commitment to quality.

We also shine a light on The Pregnancy & Parenting Center in Stark County, a beacon of hope and support for families navigating life’s most challenging moments. Their compassionate team guides new parents with education, encouragement, and kindness. It’s a beautiful reminder that exploring the journey of parenthood takes courage, community, and care.

And we can’t forget Ashley of Posh Ink, whose artful permanent cosmetics transform confidence and lives. Her blend of medical precision and creative passion is a powerful reminder that exploration is also about personal reinvention and embracing the skin you’re in.

This issue’s pages are filled with stories about exploration in all its forms, whether it’s the courage to try something new, the joy of connecting with community, or the simple pleasure of waking up to a fresh cup of coffee that tastes just right.

I hope these stories inspire you to explore your own passions, embrace new adventures, and find joy in the unexpected.

Thank you for being part of our community. Here’s to a month of discovery and wonder.

LIFE INTO ART

Exploring Creativity with Jo Westfall

For Jo Westfall, art isn’t simply a skill or profession, it’s a way of being. The Canton-based artist, curator, and creative visionary doesn’t just create art; she lives it, breathes it, and invites others to do the same.

Jo and Jo display
“I always know when I’m on the right track with art when I start to laugh.”

“As living creations, we are innately artists, dahling,” she says with signature flair. “Every child starts out as an artist… I was one of the lucky humans who was encouraged to continue doing so my whole life.”

Westfall’s journey to claiming the title of "artist" has been as colorful and layered as her work itself. Though she had long created art, it wasn't until a friend introduced her to a child simply as “an artist” that something shifted. “I wasn’t making a living from my work, it was just the way she defined me,” Westfall recalls. That quiet affirmation eventually bloomed into a full embrace of her identity and vocation.

Now, Westfall is known for her expansive, evolving body of work that defies categorization. She doesn’t confine herself to one medium or style. Instead, she

moves fluidly between materials and techniques, following what she calls her “sources of curiosity.”

Her current projects reflect that blend of curiosity, intellect, and play. One includes woven assemblages made from piano wire and welding spools, materials that fascinate her and challenge her technical skill. Another, “Scansion Art,” translates the rhythmic structure of poetry into visual and multimedia artworks. It's a marriage of Westfall’s love of language, music, and code. “It’s the perfect culmination of my interest in creative writing, analysis, coding, music, visual art, and collaboration,” she explains.

Playfulness is essential to her process. “I always know when I’m on the right track when I start to laugh,” she says. That sense of joy and spontaneity shines through in both her art and her approach to life.

Sue Cavenaugh

A self-described “Resource Artist,” Westfall frequently uses repurposed and salvaged materials, wood, metal, dress shop fabric samples, old instrument cables. This isn’t just about sustainability (though that’s certainly a benefit); it’s about transformation. “It forces me to calculate and solve problems in new and interesting ways,” she says. These materials often bring with them stories and connections, which she weaves into her pieces.

That sense of connection extends beyond materials to people. Westfall is deeply rooted in her our Canton community and believes collaboration is essential to artistic growth. “Anything that two or more people make together is going to be different than any individual could have executed on their own,” she says. “It’s unpredictable, fascinating, and usually better every time.”

As Gallery Coordinator for Cyrus Art Gallery, Westfall wears many hats. She also curates exhibits in local businesses, helping bring art into unexpected public spaces. “I get so pumped to work with people through personal connections, new or vintage,” she says. That passion for community engagement has helped her develop a web of collaborators and supporters throughout Northeast Ohio.

Even with her full schedule, Westfall makes time for reflection and balance. “Constant course correction,” she says of her approach to time management, always with planner, colored pens, and white-out in tow. Solitude, socialization, and rest are just as important to her as productivity.

Outside of the visual arts, Westfall has a vibrant musical past. “Marching band, jazz band, percussion ensemble, folk, rock, a cappella electronica, dubstep, punk, and electronic druid dance,” she says with a grin. She still contributes vocals to Post Organum, a metal recording project.

“No

one is good at anything the first time they try it. Explore, experiment, and create, whether it becomes a career or not, making is one of the most powerful things we can do.”

Her influences are as diverse as her work. Family, friends, mentors, and cultural icons all have a place in the creative mosaic that defines her. And when asked what advice she’d give to someone wanting to pursue a career in art, her answer is simple and empowering: “Just start.”

“No one is good at anything the first time they try it,” she adds. “Explore skills and experiment. Make whatever your art is, whether it becomes a career or doesn’t. Creating is the most deity-like thing we can do.”

For Westfall, art is more than what ends up on the wall. It’s about curiosity, community, and honoring the creative impulse that lives in all of us. Whether she’s shaping piano wire into sculpture or helping a local business host an exhibit, she’s always building something bigger: a vibrant, inclusive, joyful world where art is for everyone. And in that world, nothing is wasted. Everything, even a scrap of fabric or a snippet of conversation—can become the start of something beautiful.

TATTOOING CONFIDENCE, ONE STROKE AT A TIME

In a serene, impeccably clean studio infused with luxury and warmth, Ashley, owner and artist behind Posh Ink , is doing more than just tattooing faces, she’s transforming lives. As a licensed nurse and permanent cosmetics expert, Ashley brings together the precision of medical training with the soul of an artist to help people feel confident in their own skin.

Ashley’s path to permanent cosmetics wasn’t conventional, but it was inevitable. With a background in nursing and a natural love for art, she found her calling at the intersection of both. “I’ve always had a strong desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives,” she says. “Once I discovered permanent makeup, I was drawn to how it could transform someone’s confidence. What started as a hobby turned into a passion, and then a career.”

Ashley’s medical training still informs everything she does. With in-depth knowledge of the body’s systems, wound care, and sterile technique, she prioritizes safety and professionalism without compromise. “I want my clients to feel safe and completely cared for,” she explains. “That means hospital-grade disinfectants, strict protocols, and a clinical-level approach to hygiene. But I also want them to feel pampered.”

That duality, clinical precision and artistic luxury, is what defines Posh Ink .

A RANGE OF TRANSFORMATIVE SERVICES

Posh Ink offers a comprehensive menu of permanent makeup and restorative tattoo services, each customized to suit the unique features and personal style of the client. Ashley doesn’t believe in one-size-fits-all beauty. Before any pigment touches the skin, she hand-draws every shape for client approval. “No stencils here,” she says. “It’s all custom.”

CONTINUED >

Eyebrows are among her most requested services. Whether through microblading, ombré powder brows, or a combination of both, Ashley creates natural-looking brows that frame the face and simplify daily routines. “For many women, brows are a source of insecurity or frustration,” she explains. “Being able to give someone brows they love—and that last—is incredibly rewarding.”

Lip blush is another in-demand treatment. It enhances the natural color and shape of the lips, leaving them looking fuller, more youthful, and softly tinted. The results are subtle but impactful. “It’s like waking up with a touch of lipstick already on,” she says.

One of the most powerful services she provides is 3D areola tattooing —a highly specialized technique used to restore the appearance of the areola after breast surgery. For survivors of breast cancer and those who’ve undergone reconstructive procedures, this service can be life-changing. “These clients are some of the most meaningful,” Ashley shares. “To give someone the final touch after such an emotional journey, it’s an honor I don’t take lightly.”

Posh Ink also offers services such as beauty marks, scar camouflage, and tattoo lightening. And for those considering a career in the field, Ashley is in the process of writing a training manual to mentor future artists.

A STUDIO ROOTED IN PURPOSE

The name Posh Ink holds deeper meaning than it may suggest. “'Posh' is often associated with luxury and wealth, but for me, it’s about confidence,” Ashley explains. “Anyone can be posh. It’s about feeling good in your own skin and recognizing your selfworth. Posh Ink is confidence tattooed.”

That mission is reflected in every client story Ashley shares, like Brandy, a busy mother of five who had lost sight of her own self-care. “Back in 2020, when I was still early in my journey, she let me practice eyebrow tattooing on her,” Ashley recalls. “Those brows made her feel pretty again, and that small confidence boost inspired her to take better care of herself. She eventually lost 200 pounds. That’s the kind of impact permanent makeup can have. It’s not just cosmetic; it’s emotional.”

Ashley keeps her skills razor-sharp through constant study and hands-on practice. She renews her bloodborne pathogens certification each year and stays on top of the latest techniques in the industry. “Permanent makeup is my life,” she says. “I’m always learning. There’s always something new I want to master.”

CONFIDENCE THAT LASTS

At Posh Ink , Ashley’s clients don’t just leave looking better, they leave feeling seen, heard, and empowered. Her goal is to deliver not just beautiful results, but also a beautiful experience.

“It’s not about vanity,” she says. “It’s about being able to wake up, look in the mirror, and feel ready to take on the day. Whether someone’s coming in for brows, lips, or something deeply restorative like areola work, I want them to walk out of here feeling confident, important, and whole.”

“POSH INK IS CONFIDENCE TATTOOED.  WHERE LUXURY MEETS LIFE-CHANGING TRANSFORMATION AND SELF-WORTH.”

Behind each of our 200+ City Lifestyle magazines is someone who cares deeply about their community. Someone who connects people, celebrates businesses, and shares the stories that matter most. What if that someone was you?

Or maybe it’s someone you know. If this isn’t the right time for you, but you know someone who could be the perfect fit, we’d love an introduction

behind the beans

the Craft of Local Roasting

In the spring of 2019, Terry Miller and his family stood at a crossroad. After 27 successful years running Tegrey Family of Coatings, an interior painting business, Terry, his wife Peggy, and daughter Alison craved a new adventure. One born not of necessity, but passion, specifically, for coffee.

“We’re basically coffee snobs,” Terry laughs. “In a good way!” Having traveled across the U.S. for work, they’d sampled countless brews, only to find many fell short, masked by sugar or syrups. “We drink our coffee black. No additives. That made it hard to find truly great coffee.”

Determined to change that, the Millers began exploring the coffee roasting world. Their mission? Create a better bean, one that didn’t need anything added to taste incredible.  “We started looking into the coffee industry and asking ourselves how we could make coffee taste better—without covering it up,” says Terry. The answer became clear. To control quality from the source, they wouldn’t open a café or a coffee shop, they’d become roasters. Just roasters. The kind focused on what’s inside the bag, not on the frills that surround it.

Their journey began with a roasters course in Virginia. “The training gave us basics, but most of the learning came from months of study, speaking to other roasters.

Then came the bold move, transforming their paint shop into a roastery. “We removed thousands of gallons of paint, trucks, a spray booth… and replaced it all with a Diedrich IR-5 roaster, 2,500 pounds of green beans, and everything else we needed.” A handmade  sign and hand-painted storefront logo completed the transformation.

Cherry Blend Coffee Roasters Ltd. was born.

Today, the day starts early, around 8 a.m., at their roastery in Ohio. “We handle orders from our subscription service and ship coffee nationwide. We offer 20 different roasts, whole bean or ground, all roasted fresh in small batches.”

Terry emphasizes quality over quantity. “We don’t store a lot of coffee. Freshness is key. Once roasted, the beans are de-stoned, rested, labeled, and packaged.”

Exploring

It’s a full-family operation. Peggy manages inventory, packaging, and vendor relationships. “She handles everything from French presses to insurance,” Terry says proudly.

Daughter Alison runs the storefront, greeting walk-in customers with samples and helping them find their perfect roast.

Terry’s domain is the roaster. “I’ve developed profiles for each coffee we offer, custom roasts specific to each bean. It takes time and attention, but I can smell when a roast is just right.”

Cherry Blend sources its beans from Balzac Brothers Importers in Charleston, SC, a woman-owned, fourth-generation company founded in 1913. “We only buy Grade 1 or 2 beans, the highest quality they offer,” Terry notes.

In 2021, they added a second, larger Diedrich IR-12 roaster, boosting their roasting capacity to 150,000 pounds per year. That growth made them the only stand-alone coffee roaster in their area and one of just a few in all of Ohio.

Yet, despite this growth, the mission remains the same: “We want to share what great black coffee can taste like, without needing to add anything.”

Cherry Blend has also become a local destination, offering free tours and tastings daily, and a two-hour tasting every Saturday morning. Alongside coffee, they sell mugs, presses, local honey, syrup, cider, and cocoa.

As for the future, expansion is in sight. “We’ve acquired more property and plan to grow our wholesale partnerships. But we’ll always stay true to our roots. And that is roasting coffee that people love, one small batch at a time.”

Maria

DiSanti

From Cruise Decks to Dream Destinations, One Woman’s Passion for Travel Becomes a Lifelong Mission to Help Others Explore the World

As long as she can remember, Maria DiSanti has felt happiest with sand between her toes and sunshine on her face. She simply adores time spent at the ocean, with family and friends. The gentle sway of boats and cruise ships, the laughter of travelers, and the call of distant horizons has always felt like home. Her love affair with cruising began over 30 years ago. Travel wasn’t just a hobby it was a calling. When she said her wedding vows in Barbados, it was the sea that bore witness to her love. Not just for her husband, but for the adventure itself.

Maria’s passion for travel eventually steered her toward a professional path in the industry. A decade ago, she took a leap of faith by joining a Cruise Planners franchise as an associate. She quickly branched out on her own, fueled by a dream to create meaningful, bucket list experiences for others. It was a bold move, but one she has never regretted.

The pandemic struck like a tidal wave, challenging the travel industry in unprecedented ways. As cancellations poured in and uncertainty gripped the globe, many advisors stepped back. Maria remained steady, answering every call, navigating policy changes and travel restrictions, and guiding her clients with confidence. When other travel websites fell short and call centers were empty, Maria was still hustling. Her clients discovered something the internet could never offer: genuine, live support. From that storm, her reputation only grew stronger.

While her roots lie in cruising, Maria’s portfolio has since expanded to encompass land-based adventures across the globe. Whether it’s a family reunion in the Caribbean, a romantic escape to Hawaii, or a milestone graduation trip through Europe, she approaches every itinerary with the care and detail she devotes to her own travels.

One standout experience involved a custom “Amazing Race” style excursion in St. Maarten. Teams of travelers explored the city by following clues through markets, sampling local spices, and created memories through laughter and shared discovery. When they called her afterward, Maria could practically feel their smiles through the phone.

Personalization is her hallmark. From private cooking classes in Florence, where clients shopped with chefs at open-air markets and dined on handmade ravioli, to immersive family experiences in Puerto Vallarta, every trip reflects her dedication to authenticity. For her own son, a landlocked Midwesterner who dreamed of surfing, Maria arranged a private lesson in Los Cabos. It was an experience he’ll never forget, and a reminder of why she does what she does.

“THE WORLD IS VAST, AND WHILE I MAY NOT BE AN EXPERT ON EVERY DESTINATION, I’LL RESEARCH IT, TAP INTO MY TRUSTED NETWORK, AND PRESENT TAILORED OPTIONS. EVERY TRAVELER DESERVES A TRIP THAT IS UNIQUELY THEIRS.”

Maria believes in balancing exploration with comfort. "Cruises," she says, "Are perfect for immersive adventure by day, luxury by night." Whether her clients crave Alaskan glaciers or Spanish tapas, she ensures each trip and excursion is vetted, reputable, and unforgettable. For those wary of travel logistics, she handles every detail, providing step-by-step itineraries, virtual tours, and endless reassurance.

Technology only enhances her capabilities. With Cruise Planners’ dynamic tools, she can pull realtime pricing, create interactive itineraries, and provide customized quotes. She constantly updates her knowledge through webinars, supplier briefings, and live events. For Maria, education is a compass she follows faithfully.

Not every trip is simple. Some require intricate coordination, usually due to varying preferences and ages of the travelers, and tight timelines. Her secret weapon is being a good listener. Maria starts with a skeleton itinerary, then works with her clients to flush out a journey that satisfies each traveler involved. It’s a gift few possess, and one she has honed over the years.

When clients say, "We don’t have a budget,” Maria smiles knowingly. “Everyone has a budget,” she says. “They just don't know it yet.” Through honest conversations and creative solutions, she helps people realize their travel dreams without compromising their finances. "Don’t wait for retirement to see the world. Money will return,” she often tells her clients, “Time will not.”

Her greatest reward is the trust she’s earned. Firsttime clients become lifelong travelers. Doubters become believers. Many come for the deals, but stay for the relationship. “Online is for looking,” she says. “I’m for booking.” With no fees, insider perks, and access to exclusive experiences, Maria provides not just value, but a true partnership.

Now, with two associates under her wing, Maria has stepped into a mentorship role. She remembers those early days of learning the ropes and now offers the same guidance to others, building a business rooted in passion, resilience, and heartfelt service.

Looking back, Maria marvels at her journey, from a cruise-loving newlywed to a respected travel professional shaping the adventures of countless others.

For Maria, travel is a gateway to connection and transformation. With every journey she plans, she not only discovers new places but also uncovers deeper parts of herself, and the rich, expansive landscape of human experience.

The Center’s origin story is both humble and powerful. A prayer gathering at First Friends Church, led by Pastor Walter Moss, collided with the testimonies of two courageous women—Chris Grubb and Jana Demchak—who were speaking publicly about their past choices and the healing they’d found. From these experiences, the foundation was laid for what was then called the Crisis Pregnancy Support Center.

Over the years, the organization has grown into a multi-faceted support network under the umbrella of The

Pregnancy Support Network. Their mission spans far beyond the initial pregnancy test; it includes parenting education, emotional mentorship, and material support, all delivered in a welcoming, non-judgmental space.

For many expectant parents, the journey is not just about bringing a child into the world, it’s about finding their footing as new mothers and fathers. To that end, The Pregnancy & Parenting Center offers parenting classes tailored for both moms and dads. From infant care and safety to self-care during pregnancy, the Center

“PEOPLE DON’T CARE WHAT YOU KNOW UNTIL THEY KNOW YOU CARE.”

covers it all. Participants earn "Baby Bucks" by attending classes, which they can use in the boutique to choose baby items such as diapers, formula, strollers, and clothing up to size 2T. Maternity clothing and newborn diapers are often provided without any vouchers.

Fathers also find vital support through a dedicated Dads Group. Led by a trained fatherhood coordinator, these sessions help men grow in confidence and connection, offering education on child bonding, positive discipline, and personal character development. Dads earn incentives like gas cards or bus passes, and childcare is provided for their young

children during sessions. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing deep gratitude for the Center’s encouragement and guidance.

The emotional impact of the Center’s work is as meaningful as the practical aid.

A poignant story from one staff member highlights this beautifully: during what was supposed to be a routine baby shower, a young woman was moved to tears. She described how the event, filled with decorations, gifts, and heartfelt care, became a treasured memory, especially for those without family support. “They gave us a memory we’ll carry with us forever,” she shared. That moment became a powerful

reminder of the importance of seemingly simple acts of kindness.

Partnership is another cornerstone of the Center’s mission. Whether collaborating with local churches, public schools, or organizations addressing infant mortality, The Pregnancy & Parenting Center acts as both a resource and a bridge. Their team also works closely with Eva Women’s Clinic, which provides medical services like pregnancy tests and ultrasounds before referring clients to the Center for continued support.

Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers brings this mission to life. Many have walked similar paths and serve with empathy born from experience. Extensive training ensures that every client receives care grounded in love and respect.

Looking ahead, the Center is preparing for exciting expansions, both geographically and through enhanced programming for men. And for those in the community who wish to support their efforts, opportunities abound: from volunteering and donating to organizing group baby showers.

Ultimately, the Center wants every individual who walks through its doors to feel cared for, known, and empowered. As Client Services Director Holly West puts it, “People don’t care what you know until they know that you care.” And at The Pregnancy & Parenting Center, care is the very heart of the mission.

SUMMER GRILL

RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely,

chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste
