Men Who Build, Men Who Belong

When we set out to create this Men’s Issue, we knew we didn’t want to celebrate strength in the traditional sense. Canton’s men bring something far richer: a steady resilience, quiet leadership, and a deep commitment to building not just businesses, but legacies, friendships, and futures.

Here in Canton, you’ll find men who build things you can see—homes, companies, and spaces where community thrives. But more importantly, you’ll find men who build things you feel  trust, belonging, and a shared sense of purpose. They show up before sunrise and stay long after the workday ends, coaching Little League teams, volunteering at fundraisers, and launching ideas that push our town forward.

This issue highlights the men who define Canton’s spirit, not by volume but by presence. They are the entrepreneurs who take bold risks. They are the craftsmen whose hands shape the town’s look and feel. They are the fathers and grandfathers whose lessons often come not in speeches but in quiet examples.

Among those local legends is Dr. Andy Kragor of Kragor Orthodontics, whose work isn’t just about creating beautiful smiles—it’s about building confidence, one young person at a time. Through precision, compassion, and community spirit, Dr. Kragor and his team have become essential to many Canton families’ stories. Men like him remind us that leadership often looks like service.

And of course, you can't talk about the spirit of Canton’s men without tipping your hat to a bit of horsepower. With his collection of fast cars and love for performance and precision , John Horney reminds us that passion is a powerful engine in life. Whether it’s a classic muscle car or a modern marvel, John’s love of the road reflects the drive we see in many Canton men—an appreciation for craftsmanship, a thrill for adventure, and a respect for the journey.

The Men of Canton are not a monolith; they are a mosaic—woven together by a deep pride in where they come from and a steady hope for what’s ahead. They prove that leadership doesn’t always mean being the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes, it’s simply about being the most consistent one.

To the men who build, the men who give, and the men who stay rooted even as the world spins fast around them—this issue is for you. Thanks for shaping a community we’re proud to call home.

The Power of a Smile

A

CONFIDENT SMILE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER

How much is a first impression worth to you?  Do you have a first impression of someone that you wish you could retract for yourself?  Have you ever met someone and thought something about them just based on your first encounter that took you multiple visits to change?  First impressions are one of those enigma’s – you cannot pinpoint what it is exactly, but the cemented belief or perception of someone or something that became difficult to change.

My father, who has since passed away, gave me the best advice for my first job interview.  He repeated this before my dental school interviews, and my orthodontic residency interviews, and even my interview for a job position at The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.  His advice was to smile. You may not have the right answer, or best answer.  You may be stumped, or be nervous because you really want to attend this program or have this job, but remember to smile.  No one can argue with your beautiful smile.

That advice is something I still remind myself daily.  Personally, my bucket is so full, that often times my face demonstrates all the emotion I wear on the inside.  I am transparent and anyone can read me like a wide open book printed in large font.  However, my father was correct.  No one can argue with a smile.  Often we unconsciously – as vain as it is – make a judgement on a person based on the way their smile looks. Crooked teeth, yellow teeth, or missing teeth, we can make an opinion (and often is inaccurate) about a person’s social status, financial health, or whether they take care of themselves in terms of personal hygiene.

It is not fair, and really sad, but the reality is that most of us do.  I would argue that most of us would like to admit that we don’t but do.

To take away one of those false perceptions is easy – simply by visiting your dentist twice a year and keeping your oral health at the top of your priority list.  Women can spend a fortune on beauty products or beauty adjuncts, and men can spend a fortune on their social hobbies.  We pay for expensive cars, or streaming subscriptions, expensive coffee, our children’s sports,  or their fancy shoes, name brand backpacks, whatever it is.

As a teenager, I grew up without money, and begged my parents to get me braces.  I was the only one in my grade who seemed to have crooked teeth or didn’t have something to improve my smile.  I would put a paperclip in my mouth over the front of my teeth to pretend like they were getting worked on.  Not a joke!  So when your child is asking for braces, perhaps ask them why. And maybe if you are lucky they will give you an honest answer and perhaps they feel self conscious about their smile.

The number of adults who seek treatment in our practice is very high.  We treat a large adult population and many adults feel they didn’t have treatment as a child because their teeth weren’t that bad. Or perhaps they did have treatment and had some growth or shifting and now want to enhance it. There is a reason we care so much about our teeth and our smile. Whether it is good or bad, it is real and an investment worth making.

“Whether you’re 18 or 80, a strong smile is a secret weapon—boosting confidence, commanding presence, and showing the world you take pride in yourself.”
“You never get a second chance to make a first impression—so make yours unforgettable with a smile that speaks louder than words and shines brighter than any introduction.”

QUESTION: IS IT TOO LATE TO INVEST IN MY SMILE?

ANSWER: Whether you are seeking treatment for your child, or yourself, it is never too late to invest in your smile.  We recommend every child to be evaluated by an orthodontist by the age of 7 or 8.  Most children will not need treatment at this age, but many large orthodontic or growth problems can be identified at this age.  Also we have patients who are in their 80’s believe it or not so it is never too late!

QUESTION: I HAVE HEARD ORTHODONTICS IS EXPENSIVE.

ANSWER: The cost of orthodontic treatment does vary by region.  The price in New York City will be very different from the cost in Canton GA.  Also the price is more when you seek treatment with an orthodontic specialist than with a general dentist.  The reason for this is the additional education, training, and often board certification that becoming a specialist entails.  There is surely an option for everyone.  Experience also plays a role.  Most specialists can provide a comprehensive case fee for less than a car payment per month, or close to your average cell phone bill monthly.  It is very affordable and many practitioners can help with in house financing or payment plans.

QUESTION: MY CHILD HAD TREATMENT ONCE BEFORE, WHY DO THEY NEED TREATMENT AGAIN?

ANSWER: Some children (but not most) need what we call an early-interceptive or intervention approach, and often we educate our patients that if this occurs they will likely need additional treatment when they are older.  This may be due to their growth potential, excessive crowding, early loss of baby teeth, or many other interceptive techniques that are needed.  Often these cases may be challenging, and when a child

undergoes puberty, often another phase of treatment is recommended, but not always necessary. The big silver lining is that often times, these cases end up being the best looking cases that we have.

QUESTION: IF I CHOSE NOT TO DO TREATMENT, IT’S NOT IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT’S ALL COSMETIC RIGHT?

ANSWER: It is true that no-one (at least that we know of) has died from having crooked teeth or a poor bite or growth relationship of their oro-facial structures.  However there could be some problems that occur due to having a poor bite relationship and or jaw relationship.  These include but are not limited to: gingival recession, jaw pain (TMJ/TMD), sleep issues, wearing of the teeth, early loss of permanent teeth, poor position of permanent teeth, crossbites, tongue thrust or poor tongue habits, narrow maxilla and nasal floor, continuation of habits like thumb sucking or mouth breathing, etc.

QUESTION: MY DENTIST WILL TELL ME IF I NEED BRACES.

ANSWER: Yes we absolutely hope that your dentist will recommend treatment if needed.  However, the best way to determine if you need orthodontic treatment is to visit your local orthodontist for a complimentary consultation.  Most of the orthodontists in our area offer this exam without cost.  Remember an orthodontist is a trained dentist that specializes in this field.  They are often trained an additional 2-3 years to diagnose and see these problems better than anyone else in the field.  Although we have amazing dentists in our area, not all of them are trained or feel comfortable diagnosing some of these problems as well as your orthodontist.  But absolutely they will tell you if orthodontic treatment is recommended, but if they don’t tell you it may not mean that treatment isn’t recommended.

LEARN MORE: Dr. Andy Kragor is a Georgia native and board-certified orthodontist serving Woodstock and surrounding areas. He and his wife lead a family-focused practice offering expert care, including braces, Invisalign, and craniofacial orthodontics.

BUILT FOR Speed

FROM HORSEPOWER TO HARD WORK. LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND GIVING BACK.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Before he ever built a company, John Horney built speed. His passion for cars started young, long before Advanced Systems, Inc. became one of Cherokee County’s most trusted names in general contracting.

At just 16, he bought a 1978 Trans Am, which he still owns today. Over the decades, that same Trans Am evolved from a street cruiser into a 1,000-horsepower beast, lovingly rebuilt and refined—a symbol of the same craftsmanship and commitment that would later define his business.

For John, cars have always been more than machines. They are reflections of discipline, patience, and heart. His garage today is a collection of excellence, housing a Porsche Turbo S, a McLaren 765LT, and a Lamborghini Revuelto—each a reflection of speed, precision, and beauty.

“I think you’re just born with it,” John laughs. “I’ve always loved cars. The sound, the feel, the way every detail matters—it’s a lot like building anything that will last.”

And that’s exactly what John has built—not just a dream garage, but a dream life. His business, Advanced Systems, Inc., began in 1990 with just $10,000 and a determination to succeed. However, just as tuning an engine for peak performance requires more than passion, John knew success would need more than that. It would demand faith, discipline, and doing the right thing when no one was watching.

Advanced Systems began, like many American success stories, in humble, hands-on fashion, fueled by grit. In the early years, John wore every hat—estimating jobs, lining up crews, managing finances, and often working side by side with his team. He wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty or stay late to ensure the work was done correctly.

Yet as the company grew, he quickly realized he couldn’t do it all alone. If Advanced Systems was to thrive, he had to pivot—from "doing the work" to "building the business." That meant trusting others, investing in a strong team, and shifting his focus from job sites to big-picture leadership.

That shift was transformative. Early success was achieved through retail projects across the Southeast, notably with RentA-Center, one of Advanced Systems’ first major accounts. Those partnerships opened doors into retail upfits, cemetery development, financial service offices, and healthcare centers. John learned to stay versatile—something that would prove vital in an ever-changing economy.

Flexibility became key. “We never stayed stuck in one industry,” John says. “We pivoted when we needed to, and that helped us weather storms when the economy changed.” Advanced Systems became known not only for high-quality work, but also for its ability to adapt quickly, creatively, and professionally.

John’s philosophy remained simple throughout every project: Treat every job like it’s your own. Build it right. Build it to last. “You have to build the way you’d want it built if you were signing the checks,” he says. “That mindset has served us from day one.”

Faith has been the unshakable foundation of John's journey. He doesn’t view work as just transactions—it’s stewardship—stewardship of relationships, stewardship of opportunity, and stewardship of trust. To him, each opportunity to build or lead is a blessing—and a responsibility.

“We’re here for a short time,” John reflects. “Everything we have— time, talents, treasures—was given to us to honor God and bless others. It’s not about stacking up trophies or accounts; it’s about impact.”

That belief took on even deeper meaning in 2011, when John faced his greatest personal challenge: a stage three cancer diagnosis. Facing the unknown, he leaned into his faith, his family, and the world-class care at MD Anderson. After months of treatment, prayer, and resilience, John emerged stronger, deeply grateful for every new day.

“It changes you,” he says. “You stop taking time for granted. You realize every blessing you have is meant to be shared, not stored up. You look at every day as a gift to steward well.”

Today, standing tall at 6'4", John Horney is the rare kind of leader whose strength is matched by humility. Whether leading a construction team, mentoring a young entrepreneur, or taking a sunrise drive in one of his prized cars, he carries a steady, grounded spirit that speaks louder than any title or trophy. He leads by example, not just with words. John is an avid cigar aficionado who enjoys unwinding with a well-aged cigar after a long day, often pairing it with good conversation and lake views. His collection reflects his appreciation for craftsmanship, just like his cars and construction work, every detail matters.

His connection to Cherokee County is woven into everything he does. After years looking  across Cobb and Cartersville for the perfect location, John found his dream home on a peaceful lake, where mornings begin with glassy water and evenings end with grandchildren laughing across the porch.

“This is home,” he says. “We thought about getting a place in Florida or maybe the islands. But honestly? I can’t imagine being away from my kids, my grandkids, or my community. This is where my heart is.”

Life today runs like a finely tuned machine: home, business, and gym are all within a 10-minute drive of each other. John jokes that he’s “living the dream,” but it’s clear his dream is rooted in something more profound than comfort—it's built on gratitude, purpose, and genuine connections with people.

He believes deeply in giving back, not as a duty but as a way of life. Whether through supporting nonprofits, sponsoring local causes, mentoring young leaders, or investing in Cherokee County’s future, John sees generosity as essential to living a whole life.

“Life’s like a river," he says. "Blessings flow into your life so you can send them downstream. If you don’t, you get stagnant. That’s not the life I want to live.”

At Advanced Systems, that spirit of giving back runs through the company culture. John has built a team that values craftsmanship, integrity, and community impact as much as profitability. Hiring the right people, forming the right partnerships, and maintaining a long-term perspective on success have enabled Advanced Systems to survive and thrive.

“We didn’t survive 30-plus years by accident,” John says. “We survived by staying true to our values, caring for our people, and never forgetting that a handshake still means something.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many businesses struggled to stay afloat, Advanced Systems

Life’s a river — it’s not meant to be hoarded.
Blessings flow in so you can send them back out.
- John Horney

pivoted once again, shifting its focus heavily toward healthcare construction and facility projects. That agility helped the company survive and thrive, expanding its portfolio and impact.

Today, with three grown children, a growing fleet of grandchildren, and more horsepower in his garage than ever, John Horney stands as a living testament to what it means to live wide open: chasing excellence, cherishing faith, and choosing generosity over comfort at every turn.

He hopes the next generation—including his grandkids—sees that the accurate measure of success isn’t found in what you collect, but in what you contribute. It’s in how well you love, how well you lead, and how faithfully you give.

His cars may roar, but his legacy hums quietly through every project completed, every life touched, and every blessing passed downstream.

In the end, John believes success isn’t about what you hold onto. It’s about what you build—and what you give away.

PRECISION ON THE GREEN

PITCH

MARK ETIQUETTE

When your ball lands, it often leaves a pitch mark. Use a divot tool to lift the edges gently, not dig. Push the grass inward, then smooth with your putter. It’s a small act that protects the green for everyone. Play with class at Fairways of Canton.

Three Summer Tips for Reading Your Putt

Rory once said putting is all about trust— trust in your read, stroke, and routine. At Fairways of Canton, our summer greens demand extra attention and more precision. Here are three pro-level tips to help you read the green like a champion.

1. START FROM THE HOLE, NOT THE BALL

Most golfers make the mistake of lining up their putt from behind the ball only. Pros do the opposite—they start at the hole and work backward. Walk around and crouch behind the cup. Observe the slope, the grain, and any subtle breaks. Visualize the entire path before committing to your line.

2. USE YOUR FEET AND EYES TOGETHER

When you walk in the green, feel it. Your feet can sense subtle uphill or downhill lies. Pair that with your visual read—look at the high and low points around your putt. Early morning dew or dry patches can also give away the break. Trust your senses—they often tell you more than the putter ever will.

3. COMMIT TO YOUR LINE AND ROUTINE

Once you’ve picked your line, stick to it. Use a ball marker with an alignment aid or draw a thin line on your ball. Set it down with precision and line your putter face to it. Then breathe, trust the read, and roll it with confidence. Consistency in routine builds confidence under pressure.

And here’s a bonus tip: practice putting on imperfect greens. If you can read a tricky roll at dusk in July, tournament-day confidence will follow. At Fairways of Canton, we’re here to help you dial in your feel, sharpen your reads, and putt with purpose all summer. Let’s roll some together. Your lowest scores are waiting.

SUMMER GRILL

RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Following is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely,

chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped

• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 3 Cloves garlic, minced

• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 Teaspoon salt

• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 Ears sweet corn

• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes

• ¼ Cup lime juice

• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• ½ Cup white onion, chopped

• 2 Cloves garlic, minced

• Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.

2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.

3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.

4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.
