LIFE+ CULTURE HELPING HANDS: OUR THANKFUL ISSUE

CITY LIFESTYLE’S ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN NONPROFITS YOU CAN GET BEHIND

introducing upstairs bites

Brookhaven’s modern neighborhood steakhouse just got a new upstairs obsession. Upstairs Bites is our upstairs-only menu of bold, shareable plates and signature favorites — from the Arnette’s Wagyu Burger to the Astrea Caviar Doughnut, Pork Belly Bao Buns, King Salmon Avocado Roll, Spicy Bluefin Tuna Maki Roll, and a towering raw seafood selection. Available only in the upstairs bar at Arnette’s.

Refined ingredients. Rebellious spirit. Remarkably welcoming vibe.

Gratitude

I'm so very thankful for being surrounded by creative, engaged, talented and generous humans. These two, Karyn Slovin (our senior sales manager) and Aleks Kapetanovic (our staff photographer) are at the top of my gratitude list this month.

They produced the photoshoot for our annual THANKFUL feature, working with the efficient staff at Hotel at Avalon for a smooth afternoon of photography and portraits. True professionals and allaround stellar people, Aleks and Karyn are as dependable as they are delightful. Thank you!

We know you love this THANKFUL issue. You'll read about people you see in the grocery store and in businesses you frequent. They each make philanthropy a priority in their busy lives.

Finding your gifts takes introspection and imagination. Perhaps around your Thanksgiving table this month you can launch a conversation about the talents and resources each person sees in themselves and one another. Then take it one step further to challenge everyone to find a nonprofit to volunteer with. Deadline: New Year's Eve. Then, you'll truly have something to celebrate.

Have a wonderful month,

November 2025

Making Philanthropy a Priority

Wes Jones is co-founder and CEO of Honeysuckle Gelato, in Brookhaven.

SHARING MY GIFTS

I am wrapping up my term as Board Chair at United Cerebral Palsy of Georgia (UCP of Georgia) but I will remain on the board and continue to co-chair the Culbreth Cup Charity Golf Tournament with my brother, Bryan. This is our 15th year and we started the tournament to honor the memory of our grandparents, Roy and Floy Culbreth, who were instrumental in the formation of UCP of Georgia in the 1960s. Our mission at UCP of Georgia is to positively support and impact the achievement of a Life Without Limits for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

WHY I VOLUNTEER

The most meaningful interactions I have had at UCP of Georgia have been at our annual Years of Service Gala to celebrate the direct support professionals and the tireless work they do to care for the individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities we serve. I look at my service to the organization as serving two equally deserving groups – the individuals in the day programs and homes that we support and the amazing staff that supports and cares for them. Sometimes a simple and sincere gesture or thank you goes a long way.

FAMILY MATTERS

I am grateful to have a family full of people who inspire me through their service. My main source of inspiration is my wife, Caitlin, whose sense of justice and equity is unparalleled. She has served on multiple boards over the years and advocates for and donates to causes important to us. I’m also inspired by my brother, Bryan. It was his idea to start the Culbreth Cup and that has sparked fifteen years of service to UCP of Georgia from our entire family.

JOIN ME

The best way to support UCP of Georgia is to join us at the Culbreth Cup or our annual Share the Love Fashion Show, but there are many other opportunities to volunteer with the organization. With Honeysuckle Gelato, over the past 10 years, we have donated more than $90,000 to Feeding America network food banks, with more than $70,000 of that going to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

John Metz is Sterling Culinary Management Executive Chef & Co-Owner (Marlow’s Tavern, the Woodall restaurants).

SHARING MY GIFTS

I am honored to serve through our Sterling Futures Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit recently launched by Sterling Hospitality. For nearly 30 years, our team has given back to causes close to our hearts, especially Special Olympics Georgia and local neighborhood needs. The Foundation extends that work by supporting community-based projects such as school sports programs, Habitat for Humanity builds, local 5K races and families of patients staying in nearby hospitals. We also partner with organizations like Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry and Atlanta’s Giving Kitchen to support those in the hospitality industry. I’m also proud to serve on the boards of these two organizations.

WHY I VOLUNTEER

One of my most meaningful volunteer experiences has been building a friendship with Special Olympics athlete Josh Jansma through our annual golf classic. What began as a simple thank-you from Josh quickly grew into conversations about his training, his goals and life beyond the games. Over the years, I’ve come to look forward to seeing him, cheering him on and sharing those moments. His energy and gratitude remind me that this work is less about fundraising and more about dignity, inclusion and genuine connection.

JOIN ME

The best opportunity is our Annual Marlow’s Tavern & Sterling Culinary Management Golf Classic, which takes place each fall. Over the years, this event has raised nearly $1.9 million for Special Olympics Georgia. Whether by sponsoring, playing, or volunteering, it’s a chance to make a lasting impact.

FAMILY MATTERS

Giving back is deeply rooted in my family. My late father, John C. Metz Sr., and my mother, Mary, were leaders in their community, leaving behind a legacy of charitable giving through scholarships and nonprofit grants. My father’s passion for hospitality and his vision for creating opportunities in the industry inspired my own path, and I aim to carry that legacy forward through the Foundation. CONTINUED >

SHARING MY GIFTS

I am on the board of Directors of Warrick Dunn Charities. I’ve supported the event for about eight years and have served on the board of directors for the past year. I am also a graduate of the Fellows program of Halftime Leadership organization for Christian leaders. Inspired by our Founder’s life journey, Warrick Dunn Charities, Inc. empowers families to break the cycle of generational poverty and achieve a better quality of life for all.

Homes for the Holidays (HFTH) is the flagship program of Warrick Dunn Charities, Inc. Housing is the key to reducing generational poverty and increasing economic mobility. Moreover, according to research completed by Stanford, children living in stable, affordable homes are more likely to thrive in school and have greater opportunities to learn inside and outside the classroom. Warrick Dunn Charities, Inc. helps to break the cycle of generational poverty by providing a hand-up – not a handout – to single parents and their children. We surprise single parent families (who are actively working to support themselves) with home furnishings and down payment assistance.

WHY I VOLUNTEER

Seeing families receive a home — some for the first time even having their own bed — is uplifting and amazing! It’s the kind of experience I want to be part of forever.

We do an amazing celebrity golf event every year and we have a ton of fun and raise a great deal of money for the homes. We also do teaching and all sorts of amazing programs that people can volunteer for with time or treasure.

FAMILY MATTERS

My son who has a website called Help With Joy, inspires me everyday. He donates his birthday funds to a different charity every year and started being philanthropic when he was very young. For his 12th birthday he raised $1,700 for Warrick Dunn Charities and often forgoes presents to provide hope and opportunities for those less fortunate. He is one of my greatest inspirations.

With the help of donations from our sponsors and individuals like your readers, we work with local partners to turn houses into homes for single-parent families.

SHARING MY GIFTS

I volunteer for Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) and Camp Kudzu, a camp for children with type 1 diabetes. I am on the boards for both organizations. I fundraise for BT1D and am a clinical trials educational volunteer. I volunteer at camp every year for a week for Camp Kudzu. I also started a tennis and pickle ball tournament that we host every year at Capital City Club to raise money for Camp Kudzu.

Breakthrough T1D’s mission is to support research and resources for the cure of type 1 diabetes.

Camp Kudzu is a camp for children with type 1 diabetes. The mission of the camp is to educate and empower children living with type 1. Until there’s a cure, there’s camp.

My husband and all three of my adult children have type 1 diabetes. I volunteer for these organizations to support finding a cure and to support empowering children with type 1 diabetes.

WHY I VOLUNTEER

Being able to connect people to clinical trials through Breakthrough T1D has been very meaningful.

Volunteering at Camp Kudzu every summer is powerful. It’s wonderful to see children’s lives changed by their camp experience.

MISSBUCKHEAD TO REDCARPETROYAL

Shaquita Smith may spend her time bouncing between film sets in Los Angeles and red carpets across the country, but home will always be the South. “The South raised me,” she says with pride. “It’s authentic. I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for the South.” Born in Alabama and crowned Miss Buckhead in 2013, Shaquita hung up her pageant sash not long after and traded the runway for the screen—quickly landing her first role on NCIS: New Orleans and later starring as Adrien in AMC’s Wicked City, a performance that stirred early Emmy buzz.

Her Buckhead home is where she finds calm between flights, filming and other projects. Shaquita brings her signature colorful chic style to everything she does. “It really depends on my mood—I’m a Pisces,” she laughs. “But I love elegant, vibrant looks that stand out and make you feel confident.” Known for turning heads on the red carpet, she’s equally at ease in laid-back

Style goes deeper than surface for Shaquita Smith

Southern staples when she’s home, often spotted around town in casual looks that still carry effortless polish. “Buckhead just has this mix of charm and style—it’s where I feel most myself.” And she always stays true to her grandmother’s rules of style, which are to never leave home without mascara, your hair done and lipstick.

But for Shaquita, style goes deeper than surface. She’s drawn to people who use their platforms with purpose. “Angelina Jolie is one of the most powerful women in the world—not because of the entertainment industry, but because she’s created a platform rooted in helping society,” she says. “That’s what I admire. I love people who give back and stand for something bigger than themselves. Jamie Foxx is another one—he has a heart of gold.”

That mindset has shaped her career. One of her closest mentors, actor Anthony Mackie, gave her advice early on that she still lives by: “If you’re an artist, be an artist. Don’t worry about the publicity and that stuff.” The two met through a mutual friend and have stayed close ever since. “That really stuck with me,” she says. “It’s about the work, not the noise.”

Behind the glam is a grounded creative and entrepreneur. When constant travel and long days on the set began to affect her skin, she took matters into her own hands—literally. Her skin care line, Beauty Rituals, inspired by the exact seven-step nightly ritual she swears by, launched just eight months ago and has already built a loyal following. “Moisture and hydration are non-negotiable,” she says. “Your face goes through a lot when you’re flying coast to coast and under those lights.”

With several projects currently under wraps—including a major studio film and an

upcoming Warner collaboration with multiple roles as both actress and producer—Shaquita’s momentum is undeniable. Yet despite the career acceleration, she remains firmly rooted in her values and community. “Buckhead keeps me grounded. It reminds me of who I am.”

And in an industry often obsessed with image, that sense of self is her most stylish asset of all. Stay tuned— Shaquita Smith is just getting started!

Over The Finish Line

The Kyle Pease Foundation brings blue ribbon moments.

Joe Salome is co-founder of the Georgia Hemp Company, and a resident of the Buckhead Peachtree Park neighborhood. He’s been involved with the Kyle Pease Foundation for almost five years through his company. Their mission is to empower athletes with disabilities by providing access to sports, adaptive equipment, scholarships and community programs. What makes it so powerful is the experience it creates for in-chair athletes and their families. “When an athlete crosses the finish line with their push-assist partner, they get to say, ‘I did that!’,” says Joe. “For that moment, they get the same rush, the same cheers and the same sense of belonging as everyone else. For the athletes and their families, those moments of inclusion are truly life-changing.”

“For that moment, they get the same rush, the same cheers and the same sense of belonging as everyone else. That sense of normalcy and inclusion is life-changing.”

“The Georgia Hemp Company’s longstanding partnership with The Kyle Pease Foundation, a non-profit supporting individuals with disabilities through sports, is a vital collaboration involving their products into our athletes’ training and recovery routines, as well as through events such as the Green Hat Classic golf tournament and the ‘For the Love of Inclusion’ tennis tournament, which raises funds for the foundation’s mission,” says The Kyle Pease Foundation Executive Director, Brent Pease. “The Georgia Hemp Company’s co-branded CBD relief roll-on, contributes 20 percent of the proceeds from this product to The Kyle Pease Foundation, which goes a long way towards our goal to empower more athletes with disabilities and to create inclusion for The Kyle Pease Foundation and those it serves.”

The Green Hat Classic is held every April 20, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to the Kyle Pease Foundation. “Between these initiatives and providing products to support athletes with recovery and everyday wellness, we’re proud to help fuel their mission year after year,” says Joe.

“Simply walking into their office, several employees with disabilities are thriving in roles they were often overlooked for elsewhere. KPF doesn’t just create athletes; it creates opportunities for meaningful employment and inclusion in everyday life,” notes Joe.  Another powerful moment comes each year at the grant celebration. Families receive life-changing support — from accessible vans to home renovations that make daily life easier for their athlete. “Seeing the relief, the joy and the possibilities open up for those families is unforgettable. It always resets my own goals for how I want to give back in the year ahead.”

And of course, nothing compares to race day — the smiles of the athletes, the cheers from their families and the way inclusion comes alive on the course. “As a parent myself, I know what it feels like to cheer for your child. Watching those families celebrate their athlete

in the same way is what makes this work so meaningful,” says Joe.

Race day is where the magic really happens. Volunteering behind the scenes is impactful, but the ultimate experience is getting behind a wheelchair and racing alongside a push-assist athlete. Whether it’s the Publix Half Marathon, Walt Disney Marathon Weekend, or the Peachtree Road Race, sharing those miles is a gift you’ll never forget — for both you and the athlete.

If golf or tennis is more your style, you can offer support through the annual fundraisers: The Jake Golf Tournament and the For the Love of Inclusion Tennis & Pickleball Tournament. Both events fuel life-changing grants awarded annually to athletes with disabilities.

Joe has been inspired by his parents. His mother was a nurse and his dad served in the Air Force. “They both lived with compassion and empathy, always giving their time, energy and resources to help others,” says Joe, thankfully.

“One of the most powerful examples came when my mom was caring for a young girl with cerebral palsy who was close to my age at the time. The family dreamed of taking her to Disneyland, but medical expenses and her condition made it feel impossible. When my dad heard that, he rallied his Air Force squadron to organize a fundraiser to send the family on that trip.”

That experience stuck with Joe. It showed him the power of inclusion, the joy of leveling the playing field and the impact of giving people opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have.

Today, he sees that same spirit continuing in his daughter Olive, who is developing her own nonprofit, Olive’s Branch, to help underserved kids access sports and equipment. “Watching her step into this kind of service shows me that the compassion my parents passed on is now being carried forward to the next generation,” he says.

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

DESIGN STUDIOS AT ADAC: A NEW CHAPTER IN CREATIVITY

The Atlanta Decorative Arts Center (ADAC) has unveiled the latest evolution of its creative campus with the debut of the newly redeveloped second-floor wing: the 242 Design Studios. This 12,500-square-foot expansion welcomes 12 new design firms to ADAC’s growing design community, bringing the total number of design studios on property to over 40 and the total studio footprint to more than 50,000 square feet.

This expansion builds on ADAC’s longstanding mission to serve as the Southeast’s design epicenter, offering not only premier showrooms but also direct access to the region’s most talented interior designers and architects. For consumers, navigating the renovation or new build process and having designers on-site streamlines sourcing and collaboration, making ADAC an invaluable one-stop destination for design expertise, inspiration and resources.

Liza Bryan Interiors, Inc. has found new light in its thoughtfully designed studio at ADAC. “Being at ADAC means that we are just steps away from our favorite showrooms and vendors,” says Bryan. “We’re so happy to call ADAC our new home!”

Joy Street Design embraced its signature vibrance with purple ceilings and yellow cabinetry. “ADAC is the best design center in the country,” says founder Kelly Finley.

A New Nashville

Get away this fall to The Bobby.

One of my favorite things about traveling with my partner Marty is witnessing his childlike excitement the moment a gracious host hands us the keys to our temporary quarters. That joy was especially palpable when we checked into The Bobby Hotel in Nashville—our first road trip since moving to Atlanta from New York.

Our room on the sixth floor felt more like a suite, with its generous layout and mid-century modern flair. Every detail was thoughtfully curated, from the bespoke furnishings to the striking bathroom cleverly enclosed by glass panels and a wraparound velvet curtain. It was the kind of space that invites you to slow down and savor the design.

A few floors up, the rooftop bar offered a quirky surprise: a vintage bus repurposed as a lounge space. While the cocktails were tempting, Marty and I couldn’t resist our tradition—snapping goofy pictures in the rooftop photo booth, a ritual that always makes us laugh.

Our mornings began with coffee and pastries at the hotel’s cozy café, where the people-watching was as satisfying as my perfectly steamed flat white. Dinner downstairs was a

standout—we both agreed they had some of the best mocktails we’d ever had. (Seriously, we’re still talking about it.)

Of course, no trip to Nashville is complete without exploring the city itself. While we’re not big on bar-hopping, we love wandering downtown, weaving through boot barns and honky-tonks. A tip from the front desk led us to Hatch Show Print, a historic letterpress shop that turned out to be a highlight of our trip—second only to the 11 p.m. wagyu burger we ordered via room service.

What we loved most about The Bobby was its perfect balance: close enough to the city’s vibrant nightlife, yet tucked just far enough away to offer a peaceful retreat. Whether you’re into music, burlesque, or just a quiet night in, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve found your own little corner of Nashville.

New grab and go spot open in Buckhead

Antoinette Rosenberg is the founder of Gather’d Market, a Buckhead neighborhood store designed to take the mental load out of mealtime. Inspired by the familiar “4 p.m. what’s for dinner?” dilemma, she created Gather’d as a place where busy families can find fresh, high-quality meal shortcuts, like sauces, proteins, sides and seasonal specials.

Antoinette earned her MBA from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School before joining General Mills in Minnesota, where she honed her skills managing some of the nation’s biggest food brands. Later in Seattle, she launched an online specialty grocery platform that connected simple dinner recipes to curated groceries, deepening her understanding of how people shop and sparking the idea for a market where variety, quality and convenience meet.

When Antoinette and her husband moved back to Atlanta to raise their family, she knew it was the right place to bring Gather’d to life. Today, the market’s menus feature everything from pesto steak pasta to fresh salads, alongside curated wines, counter-service iced coffee and tea, freshly baked cookies and grab-and-go favorites.
