Amazing Local Dining Experiences!

It seems like 90% of married life involves asking each other “Where do you want to go eat?”

After 11 years of marriage and two kiddos, I quit asking. Instead, I just say “babe, I know you’re tired, let’s get sushi tonight.” #winwin #freemarriageadvice #tryititworks

However (don’t tell my wife) there ARE some amazing dining options and experiences right here in the Broomfield area that don’t involve sushi. We had an absolute blast working with Larry Herz of OCN Eats to highlight a few local gems. Check out our cover story, Larry’s Broomfield Area FLAVORites to get his take on some places to go and things to try.

If you missed the Broomfield Area Bites and Brews event back in July, you’re in luck! This is an annual event, so you can go next year, ha ha! But seriously, The Stable Bar & Grill was voted Best of Show by attendees, and for good reason. Find out what makes them stand out in this issue!

A few other things to look out for this month include; Beltran’s Grill, John’s Table Kitchen & Bar, and expert advice from our friends at Elevation Chiropractic & Wellness about how food sensitivities can be treated effectively with acupuncture.

I’m also excited to share a new feature in our publication! For the first time, we’re including City List, a segment of Broomfield Lifestyle where you can find a categorized list of places to try based on your wants.

Let’s eat!

Larry’s Broomfield

Area FLAVORites!

IF LARRY LOVES IT, THEN YOU MIGHT TOO!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY & LARRY HERZ

Larry Herz’s mission is to fill seats at local restaurants, driven by the challenges he experienced during his 29 years in the industry. As the face of OCN (Our Community Now) Eats, Larry supports local eateries by highlighting their owners—good people serving great food. Our annual Food & Drink issue is the perfect time to share his favorites in the Broomfield area! Also, don’t miss his special segment, Dining Out with Larry, every Friday at 4pm on CBS News!

So, let’s dive in…

La Belle

French

Bakery:

1170 US-287, Broomfield, CO 80020

“La Belle is an absolute gem,” Larry shares. Originally founded in Thornton, Founder and CEO Julien Renaut aims to open 16 locations across Colorado. When he appeared as a guest on OCN Eats’ ‘What’s For Lunch,’ he brought 40 pastries—each one better than the

last. “Julien is an absolute sweetheart,” Larry adds, noting that he has added sandwiches to the menu. With freshmade baguettes, it’s a top lunch spot. “Every dish is a work of art; you don’t know if you should eat it or hang it on the wall.”

La Belle French Bakery

Jennie Pho: 6765 W 120th Ave A, Broomfield, CO 80020

“Their Phorrito is a standout—think of it as a Vietnamese twist on a French dip, with meat, rice noodles, and more wrapped in a tortilla, served with a side of pho broth.” Another favorite of Larry’s is the Phonomenon, featuring whole lobster and wagyu beef. “John and Jennie, along with their kids, make this place feel like home,” he adds. “You can taste the love in every dish.”

La Distileria: 2255 W 136th Ave, Broomfield, CO 80023

“La Distileria is simply gorgeous,” Larry says. “A friend recommended it, and I’m glad she did. The pozole is one of the best I’ve ever had.” He’s also a fan of their frozen drinks and the quesabirria—a unique blend of French dip and taco. “The drippings from the meat are used to season the tortilla and make the dipping sauce. It’s smooth, rich, and spicy, perfect for flavoring meats. You really need to taste it to appreciate it fully.”

Rock City Pie & Ice: 1386 US-287, Broomfield, CO 80020

“Rock City Pie & Ice is my favorite in the north metro.” said Larry, with absolute conviction. He explains, “Detroit-style uses Wisconsin cheese drizzled on the outside to create a caramelized crust. The pizza is light and airy, not dense, with the sauce on top.” Larry adds, “The history is fascinating—Detroitstyle pizza was baked in blue steel pans originally used as drip trays or to hold scrap metal.”

“CD Wings is easily in the conversation for the best wings in the Denver metro area,” says Larry. “Their commitment to quality is unmatched—they fry each order from raw, while others might cut corners.” Starting in Westminster, expanding to Aurora, and soon Parker, CD Wings is known for its sauces, ranging from mild to super spicy. Larry’s go-to flavor? “The Notorious RBG, hands down,” he adds. CD’s Wings: 7685 W 88th Ave, Westminster, CO 80005

“Chop Shop is a standout in the fast-casual scene,” Larry says. “Their commitment to sous vide meat is impressive—the braised short rib is unbelievable, and that same technique keeps the fried chicken extremely moist.” He also praises their baconwrapped meatloaf and notes, “Their presentation is so refined it feels like fine dining in a fast-casual setting. No one competes with them in their lane.”

A FIESTA FLAVORFUL

SAVORING SUCCESS: HOW BELTRAN’S GRILL IS REVOLUTIONIZING COLORADO’S MEXICAN FOOD SCENE

For taco fiends and novice foodies alike, Beltran’s Grill stands out as a flavor-fest, catering to both adventurous palates and those preferring traditional ingredients. Nestled in Broomfield, it’s more than just a restaurant; it’s a vibrant celebration of authentic Mexican cuisine with a twist.

ARTICLE BY DANICA DE JONG

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

Drawing inspiration from his family’s cherished Beltran’s Meat Market, founder Aaron Beltran crafted this culinary gem, transforming a family passion for food and cocktails into a savory feast, continuously embarking on adventures to Mexico to scour for tasty treasures. With Chef Juan Carlos Garcia, a gastronomic wizard boasting over 20 years of expertise, at the helm, Beltran’s Grill delivers a diverse menu that seamlessly blends traditional Mexican tastes with inventive flair, bringing a cacophony of ingredients to Colorado. From tacos that pay homage to regions like Chihuahua and Mexico City to their ever-changing Taco of the Month, which has yet to repeat a single taco, every bite is an adventure.

Recently, Beltran's Grill turned heads at the Top Taco festival, snagging the People's Choice Award for Best Taco with their mouthwatering Alambre taco—a tantalizing mix of diced steak, bell peppers, bacon, and cheese, drizzled with a zesty green tomatillo salsa. They also took home second place for Best Margarita, proving their cocktails are just as delectable as their tacos. This win adds to an impressive tally of awards in both categories at past Top Taco festivals.

Stepping into Beltran’s Grill feels like being embraced by a warm family gathering—an inviting reception with comfort foods like enchiladas to flavor-packed delights, every bite offers a culinary epiphany. The lively spirit of family and fiesta fills the air, leaving you with memories that’ll have you salsa dancing all the way home!

JOHN’S TABLE KITCHEN & BAR: PROVIDING ELEVATED HOME COOKING FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS

ARTICLE BY JULIE WALKER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
Owners Alex & Kelli Gianopoulos, son Elias and office dog, Bronx

It’s Saturday afternoon, and you’re worn out after hours in the sun at your kid’s soccer game. You’re hot. You’re tired. Yet the kids are still buzzing around like bees to flowers. How do they have so much energy?? And, of course, they’re STARVING. What to do?

Keep the oven turned off, and take the family (and dog!) over to John’s Table Kitchen & Bar within the central hub of Broomfield, Lafayette, Superior and Louisville communities. This

tucked-away gem is a gathering place with elevated home cooking, ice-cold beverages and a large patio and yard with cornhole and giant versions of classic games including Connect 4, Sorry, Tic Tac Toe, and Jenga.

Everything on the menu is made from scratch. This includes the fresh-baked Challah bread and cinnamon rolls, to the pulled pork which is smoked in-house with a tequila blueberry bbq sauce, to the hand-cut fries that are—you guessed it— cut in-house. They have many gluten-free

(separate fryer), vegetarian, and dairy-free options, all clearly labeled on their menus.

Alex and his wife, Kelli, have turned this amazing space into a thriving community hub. Alex’s family is full of restaurant and food-inspired stories and history. The name, John’s Table, is an homage to Alex’s grandfather, John, who owned a restaurant called John’s Place. Alex wanted to honor his family by creating a place where people can gather and bond over food.

So sit back and enjoy a meal that feels like home—without the cooking or cleanup.

This recognition underscores their commitment to delivering remarkable food and unforgettable experiences, making The Stable Bar & Grill a standout destination.

EXPLORING HOW ACUPUNCTURE AND FOOD WORK TOGETHER TO HEAL THE BODY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

You just finished a delicious meal at that new restaurant nearby with a few of your friends and it tasted great. Unfortunately, by the time you get home your stomach already hurts and you know it’s going to be another sleepless night. Remedies like Tums and Prilosec don’t make the discomfort go away anymore either.

“I shouldn’t have had that spicy Thai food,” you scold yourself.  Then you remember that the Italian you had last week, and the Mexican you had just a few days ago, made you feel the same way.  “What am I supposed to live on, bread and water?” you inquire of the food gods.

Wondering if you have some sort of food allergy you see a gastroenterologist for food testing.  You change your diet after getting the test results. Things are a little better, but it’s hard to follow all the guidelines, making it nearly impossible to go out to dinner with friends.

“There must be another way to deal with this,” you tell yourself to fight off the growing depression.

Then a relative hears of your gut issues.  “Have you tried acupuncture?  It worked wonders for me.  There’s even a place here in Broomfield that offers it!”

You do some research and learn that acupuncture was developed in the far east, probably China, around 2500 BCE.  It’s not a fad.  Treatment consists of a skilled and licensed technician inserting very small metal needles into the skin and underlying tissues in precise points in the body depending on the malady.

Your next step?  Contact Elevation Chiropractic and Wellness at 3400 Industrial Lane in Broomfield to meet with Sunny Yoo, their acupuncturist, for a full evaluation.  There is a lot that goes into developing the right treatment regimen.

“Oriental medicine is all about finding the root cause of the problem rather than simply checking for

symptoms and just ‘numbing’ them. There are many different causes of indigestion, such as stress, deficient qi or energy that slows down food digestion, and even lack of stamina, which needs to be thoroughly diagnosed. There may be a single cause, or multiple. Once diagnosed, I choose points in the meridian or channel in the patient’s body that I find problematic and perform acupuncture treatment to adjust or balance the energy,” explains Sunny.

A typical treatment session lasts about one hour, generally less for weaker or older patients, or those with chronic issues.  The number of treatments required to rebalance the body energy, or qi, varies by patient and how they respond, not unlike many Western medicine practices.

Francesca, a patient at Elevation, felt better after just one visit.  “I was nervous at first because I am uncomfortable with needles, but now I look forward to my treatments,” she explains.  “Sunny was so great.  On my first visit she instantly knew what I was experiencing just by feeling my pulse.  She even knew that I hadn’t eaten!”

Sunny started practicing acupuncture in 2017.  Even as a child she was curious about Oriental philosophy and medicine and how the function of the body closely resembles nature.

“Acupuncture is very safe.  You could’ve come to me for digestion issues, but with treatment, symptoms such as headache or insomnia may also improve because those symptoms come from the same root in the body, which patients find very surprising in a good way!” Sunny adds.

Maybe acupuncture can get you back to your favorite dinner table!

Our Favorite Bourbons

$150

The “Best Bourbon” Is Truly Up To The Individual and Occasion Under

We were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon under $150 and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared. Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!

Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.

BLANTON’S SINGLE BARREL BOURBON

Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.

— BlantonsBourbon.com ($100-$150)

BASIL HAYDEN’S RYE BOURBON –AGED 10 YEARS

In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.

— BasilHaydens.com ($75-$100)

PINHOOK ‘BOURBON WAR’ VERTICAL SERIES 5 YEARS

Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,

cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.

— PinhookBourbon.com ($75-$50)

EAGLE RARE 10 YEAR

Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.

— EagleRare.com ($30-$50)

OLD FORESTER 86 PROOF

While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.

— OldForester.com ($20-$30)

MCAFEE’S BENCHMARK OLD NO. 8

Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.

— BuffaloTraceDistillery.com (Under $20)

USING THESE TIPS YOU CAN MAKE A DELICIOUS HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE.

A good barbecue sauce is comprised of a variety of the same six components. The key is to discover what style you enjoy most, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Oh, and taste often during the preparation process to adjust if so desired.

SOMETHING SWEET

This can be honey, cola, molasses, preserves, brown sugar, or syrup. This caramelizes as you cook, bringing those smoky, sugary flavors.

SOMETHING TANGY

Think vinegar, mustard, or citrus. This is what brings the zing to your sauce.

SOMETHING SPICY

This provides your heat: a hot sauce is a great choice. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 teaspoon for every cup of sauce you’re making.

SOMETHING LIQUID

It can be beer, water, chicken stock, soda, or wine. Start with about 1/2 a cup and see what happens.

SOMETHING TOMATO

You’ll most likely use ketchup, but you can also use tomato paste.

THE SPICE COMBINATION

This can depend on your liking and taste and can include anything from onion powder to garlic powder to chili powder to allspice to cayenne pepper to mustard powder to liquid smoke to cumin to Worcestershire sauce and more. Start with a teaspoon of salt, and keep tasting as you experiment with your desired spices.

HOMEMADE

BBQ SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups ketchup

• 1 cup water

• 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

• 5 tablespoons brown sugar

• 5 tablespoons sugar

• 1/2 tablespoon  black pepper

• 1/2 tablespoon onion powder

• 1/2 tablespoon ground mustard

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

DIRECTIONS

In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.

TONE + TEXTURE

STYLE YOUR HOME IN TONES AND TEXTURES WITH DESIGN HELP FROM HOUZZ INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERTS

WOVEN + KNOTTED

LIVING BOHO-CHIC WITH WOVEN TEXTURES AND MACRAMÉ

Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”

AGAINST THE GRAIN

TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS

Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”

BRIGHTS + WHITES

ADDING TASTEFUL POPS OF COLOR TO YOUR WHITE ROOM

Do you feel like your all-white room is missing something? Houzz contributor Kelly Porter bets what’s missing is energy.

“The best way to add a spark to any space,” she says, “is with bright color.”

Kelly says green is one of the easiest colors to live with, looking organic even in its more vivid tones.

“When searching for the perfect bright green, think springtime—fresh green grass and newly sprouted leaves,” she says. “These greens have lively undertones that will look comfortable and warm in your white space.

Other colors Kelly recommends adding as accents are yellow, royal blue, orange, blue-purple, red-purple and sky blue.

Fall’s most notable comfort meal

BY

CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP

This hearty chicken noodle soup is the perfect comfort food that is packed with nutritious goodness. This pairs perfectly with homemade beer bread or a sourdough loaf.

INGREDIENTS:

• 8 cups chicken broth (add more if desired)

• Whole fryer chicken, cut in chunks or shredded

• 5 celery stalks, sliced

• 8 carrots, sliced

• ½ onion diced

• 4 tablespoons butter

• 1 teaspoon italian seasoning

• ¼ cup half and half (optional)

• 1 package egg noodles

• Salt and pepper to taste

• DIRECTIONS:

In a large stock pot, add 8 cups of chicken broth. Dice carrots, celery and onion and add to the broth. Bring to a boil, and reduce to medium heat until the vegetables are soft. In the meantime, skin and cube 1 whole fryer chicken and add to the stock pot. Next, add egg noodles (frozen Reames homemade egg noodles are my favorite) and let boil until noodles are cooked. Add butter, half and half, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low until ready to serve.

TOMATO BASIL SOUP

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 cans diced tomatoes

• 2 ½ cups vegetable broth

• ½ cup heavy whipping cream

• 1 onion, diced

• 3 cloves minced garlic

• 3 tablespoons olive oil (or alternatively, 1 stick butter)

• ½ cup chopped fresh basil

• Salt and pepper to taste

This classic tomato basil soup is easy and quick to make and is the perfect way to get the rustic, tangy and savory flavors of this italian dish.

DIRECTIONS:

Toss the butter or olive oil in the pan. Add onion, and saute until the onion is translucent and soft. Add minced garlic, and saute for 2 minutes. Next, add canned tomatoes and simmer. Transfer to a blender, and puree until smooth. Add the fresh basil and heavy cream. Transfer mixture back to the pan to thoroughly heat, and salt and pepper to taste. Top with fresh parmesan and chopped basil, and serve with toasted italian bread.
