If you have read Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, you may have learned that one of the strongest human desires is to feel important and appreciated.
Ironically, this is such a strong desire, yet it’s also one of the most neglected. For whatever reason, we tend not to share or show appreciation for others nearly as much as we should.
With that in mind, here are a few great reasons to focus on and share gratitude with others:

• Expressing gratitude for other people is a gift, lifting their spirits.
• Having a grateful heart creates feelings of contentment.
• Gratitude is good for your health and reduces anxiety. It has been said that we can’t hold onto anger or bitterness and gratitude simultaneously!
• It keeps you humble and also makes you more likable. Who doesn’t like thankful, humble people?
• Thankfulness inspires others to be generous. There are many more reasons, but I thought these were the most impactful and important to share as we enter the holiday season.
With that in mind, I invite you to make a habit of expressing gratitude. Who are you thankful for? Why? When was the last time you let them know?
Do it today! It will make you both feel great.

ARTICLE BY BETH GUSTIN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

Grief and gratitude might seem like emotional opposites—grief revolves around loss, while gratitude highlights the good in life. However, these two can coexist and provide profound support on your journey through grief.
Beth Gustin, a grief counselor at Transitioning Through Change in Westminster, understands this dynamic well. Grief manifests in various ways, whether mourning a loved one, a pet, or the end of a significant chapter in life. It can feel like an emotional rollercoaster, bringing waves of sadness, anger, and confusion. There’s no rulebook for “correct” grieving; the key is to allow yourself to feel those emotions so healing can begin.
One of Beth’s clients, who had experienced multiple losses, found herself struggling under the weight of her grief. Recognizing her pain, Beth recommended that she start noticing little moments of joy throughout her day. This could be as simple as feeding the birds in her yard, hearing bird calls during her daily walk, experiencing success at work, or sharing laughter with friends and family. By encouraging her to write these moments down, Beth helped the client honor her loved ones and express gratitude for both the big and small joys in life.
This practice shifted the client’s focus from her losses to the simple pleasures that still existed around her. While the pain of her grief remained, the act of acknowledging moments of joy provided her with comfort, strength, and hope on her path toward healing and discovering a new identity and purpose.
Grief does not have to overshadow all aspects of life. Instead, gratitude can carve out space for moments of peace and reflection alongside heartache. For instance, when mourning a loved one, gratitude can transform deep sorrow into an appreciation for the special times shared. The pain may linger, but gratitude offers a gentler way to hold onto the love that remains.
“There’s no rulebook for “correct” grieving; the key is to allow yourself to feel those emotions so healing can begin.”
HOW TO PRACTICE GRATITUDE DURING GRIEF:
1. Journaling: Write down three things you are grateful for each day, no matter how small, like enjoying a warm cup of coffee or getting out of bed.
2. Memory Rituals: Light a candle or create a memory box to honor your loved one.
3. Nature Walks: Spend time in nature, which can remind you of life’s cycles and its ability to heal and renew.
4. Supporting Others: Helping others can enhance your sense of purpose and remind you of the support you still have.
Balancing grief and gratitude may help bring moments of peace, even during life’s toughest times, allowing you to honor your losses while still embracing life’s beauty.

In the quiet corners of Broomfield, where tight-knit neighborhoods flourish, stands a home that has been a cherished emblem of the Anderson family for over half a century. This quaint space, marked by open doors and neighborly check-ins, witnessed countless family gatherings and childhood milestones. "My mom hosted family reunions with 25 people in that tiny house," Todd Anderson reminisced. "It was a wonderful place to grow up."
After the passing of their beloved mother, the Anderson children faced the daunting decision to sell their family home. Overwhelmed by grief and inundated with lowball offers from opportunistic investors, they felt lost in the process. Enter Kassi Reiger, owner of Reiger Real Estate, who arrived as an unexpected ally during this challenging time. Her connection to the home began serendipitously at the Anderson estate sale.
“As soon as I walked in, I thought, ‘I want this house,’” Kassi recalled. She left her contact information, hoping for a chance to make it her first home.
Months later, an unexpected email from Todd reignited Kassi's interest in the property. Although she had since purchased another home, her fondness for the Anderson house led her to propose a compassionate solution. Understanding the family's sensitive state, she suggested a unique approach: she would cover the renovation
costs while allowing the Andersons to retain ownership until the house was sold. This offer stood in stark contrast to previous undervalued bids. “In a time of stress, going through a death in the family, it’s nice to know someone is on your side, helping you get through the process," Todd explains, expressing his gratitude for the support during this emotional transition. “She cared about what we wanted and took care of everything, so all we had to do was sit back and let her take the reins.”
Kassi’s renovation philosophy centered on preserving the home's character. She carefully selected materials that balanced upgrades with their original charm; think rounded sconces and pastel green tiles juxtaposed with gold fixtures, paying homage to the original 1970s aesthetic. "We wanted it to feel like a modern home while still encompassing the time period," Kassi explained. Most importantly, it’s about preserving elements so that the home's history isn't erased but instead celebrated.
"She changed the house, but it needed to be changed,” Todd shares. “That was a good thing in my opinion."
In the spirit of community and continuity, as renovation neared completion, Kassi hosted a neighborhood preview. Long-time residents gathered to reminisce and say goodbye, sharing stories about Shirley Anderson. “I would come every Wednesday with my granddaughters to visit, and Shirley always had her candy dish full,” Margaret, a long-time neighbor to the Andersons, shared. “‘You make sure you take some candy now’, she’d say.” Margaret paused briefly to collect herself. “My granddaughter has that candy dish now...”.
With the home finding a new family and the Andersons receiving a price far exceeding their initial expectations, they felt a sense of relief and fulfillment. Todd emphasized, “She knew we didn’t want to sell to someone who would rent it out. This is a great neighborhood with great schools, and we wanted a family to live here.”
More than a realtor, Kassi aims to aid those in need while preserving stories and breathing life into homes for future generations. “I'm in this to help, especially pre-foreclosure people or landlords that don't have funds to renovate,” Kassi explains. “We'll put it on the market at full potential price to get them as much as we can…it's really awesome.”

Gratitude is a powerful tool that shapes our mindset and influences every aspect of our lives. “With a growth mindset, gratitude shifts your perspective,” explained Sue Vencill, a seasoned business coach and trainer with Business MAPS Coaching and Transformational Training. Sue helps business owners achieve their goals by focusing on the bigger picture and overcoming obstacles. In addition to coaching, Sue Vencill is certified with The One Thing, a New York Times bestseller on prioritizing a single task.
During a recent class, Sue worked with her clients on a gratitude mindset, and five of her key insights are provided here. “By focusing on gratitude, we can transform our overall approach to growth by prioritizing the one thing that will make everything else easier or unnecessary.”
1. Energy
Gratitude enhances how we manage our physical, mental and emotional energy. Physically, it motivates us to take better care of ourselves by encouraging movement, exercise, proper nourishment and rest. Mentally, gratitude shifts our thinking from fixed, negative mindsets to an expansive, positive outlook. Emotionally, practices like prayer, meditation and gratitude help replenish our reserves, enabling us to give to others from a place of abundance.
2. Habits and Choices
Gratitude influences the habits and choices that shape our lives. By focusing on what we’re grateful for, we naturally make decisions that serve us better, whether it’s choosing healthier meals, committing to personal growth or prioritizing exercise. The idea of focusing on one thing, like putting on walking shoes every morning to then get out the door for a walk, helps us build consistent habits, leading to longterm personal development.
3. Relationships and Resources
Gratitude also strengthens relationships and sharpens awareness of our resources. When we express appreciation to those we trust, we deepen our bonds and build a supportive community. Recognizing the people and resources we can rely on—like friends, family or mentors—creates a sense of security and positivity.
4. Growth Plan
When we focus on gratitude, we become more open to growth opportunities. Gratitude encourages us to learn, whether it’s mastering a new skill or improving an area of our lives. It helps us model good habits for those around us, such as becoming a better cook for our family or improving our health through consistent self-care.
5. Schedule
Gratitude requires that we prioritize ourselves, making time for things like self-care and reflection. By scheduling moments for gratitude, like a morning walk or meditation session, we create space for growth and self-reflection, ensuring we stay grounded and focused.
1. Start with Three Things: Begin by identifying three things you’re grateful for, which can be big things like family, health or your job. This helps you establish a baseline of appreciation.
2. Go Deeper: Choose one of those things, like family, and dive deeper into what specifically you appreciate. For example, be thankful for your 18-year-old granddaughter’s achievements or your youngest son’s newfound job stability.
3. Celebrate and Share: Don’t forget to celebrate your wins and express gratitude to others. Even small gestures, like complimenting a neighbor on their beautiful garden while out walking, can brighten someone’s day and make a lasting impact.
Gratitude is the lead domino in creating a growth mindset, setting the foundation for positivity and self-improvement. When we make gratitude a habit, everything else in life begins to fall into place.

HOW ONE FAMILY’S STORY BECAME A BEACON OF HOPE FOR OTHERS

When someone goes out of their way to express gratitude, amazing things can happen.
Thanking someone for simply holding open a door is an automatic response for most polite people. However, only saying “Thank you” may feel inadequate when a group of people go out of their way to help you in your time of need.
Daniel Jaramillo and his wife Jacquenette experienced that, and the results have grown into something very special. They responded to a family tragedy by giving thanks to those who helped them during some dark times and creating a fund to help other families cope with similar losses.
The couple’s son Daniel was born twelve weeks prematurely and spent 14 months at Children's Hospital fighting for his life. His parents nicknamed him “The Lion” because of his fighting spirit. When little Daniel went to be with the Lord at that early age, his parents reflected on the outpouring of love and support they had received from friends, family, and the wonderful staff at Children’s Hospital. They planned

a picnic in Broomfield’s Midway Park to thank everyone who had been a part of Daniel and the family’s struggle. “We planned for 50 people to show up, and 300 attended. It was a perfect example of Broomfield’s sense of community and the healing power of giving thanks,” explains Mr. Jaramillo.
Daniel “The Lion” Fund was created, and the following year, 500 people attended the picnic to benefit families who have lost a child or are struggling with a critical childhood illness. With help from local donations, the Daniel “The Lion” Day annual picnic, scheduled on the weekend preceding Labor Day weekend, is now in its tenth year and sees upwards of 1,000 people celebrate the community and provide help to those in need. The theme, “Healing comes from serving others,” is the event’s foundation and the fund itself.
The picnic is fun for the entire family, and even people enjoying Midway Park for some other reason often find themselves drawn into the festivities, including interacting with “Sonny and Friends,” the fund’s loving and cuddly animal characters. No fundraising speeches or banners listing corporate sponsors are at the event. There isn’t even a jar available for donations at the picnic because it’s all about providing a healing space for those who need it and giving thanks to those who provide it.
Christian Walter, a member of Broomfield’s Guys Who Give organization, heard of Daniel “The Lion” Fund’s impact on the Broomfield community and invited the founder to attend the quarterly Guys Who Give meeting at Wonderland Brewing. At each meeting, the Guys choose a Broomfield-based charity to

receive their donation. Three charities are pulled from the hat containing all the nominees, and the nominating member gives the merits of the charity. Christian explained why he believed Daniel “The Lion” Fund deserved the donation, and after a ballot vote of the entire group, nearly all of them agreed!
“When they announced the winner, I was shocked and overwhelmed,” says Daniel. “Just being introduced to all those caring individuals who make up the group was heartwarming and inspiring. To be lucky enough to get our name pulled from the hat, and then to be voted as the recipient of the donation—wow, it was such a blessing!" Daniel emotionally explains.
The $10,100 donation was more than double the usual amount awarded. That kind of money makes a huge impact on a small “kitchen table” charity like theirs, as Daniel describes it. The four Sonny and Friends costumes, tired and worn out from so many appearances over the years, were the first things replaced with the money. Activity items such as books and games were purchased to give recipient families a chance to spend some happy times together while they are suffering through the loss or critical illness of a child. “You might be surprised what kind of impact something as simple as that can have on a family during those emotional and stressful times,” instructs Daniel.
“I have personally experienced Broomfield’s tremendous sense of community and giving nature. I can’t think of a better place to live and raise a family,” beams Daniel.
