She Is Called
In a male-dominated Roman empire, Lydia of Thyatira had a successful business selling purple cloth. During Paul’s ministry, he found her leading groups of women on the Sabbath to a place to pray near the river outside of Philippi. In addition to her entrepreneurial pursuits, she was also insistent that Paul and his friends come to stay at her home, indicating her desire to be hospitable. Lydia’s leadership qualities became apparent when she became the leader and host of the first Philippi church. She is undoubtedly an example of a successful female entrepreneur.

Helen Keller was left both deaf and blind due to a severe illness at a young age. With the help of her lifelong companion, Anne Sullivan, Helen learned to read and write. Helen became the first deafblind person in the United States to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree and later wrote 12 books. Helen campaigned for those with disabilities and was a committed activist for social justice, despite her profound disabilities.
As instrumental women in history, their significance must be remembered today. The local women featured in this month's Women's Issue have many of the same qualities as Lydia and Helen: successful, faithful, intelligent and resilient. These are businesswomen who evoke leadership, show remarkable wit and knowledge, and have courage and spiritual insight. And when women are role models and business leaders, our community is elevated, and all of our lives are enriched.
I hope you find inspiration as you read about these local moms and business owners who have graciously shared a little of who they are. Their stories of determination and leadership will empower you. My desire is you will be encouraged to step up and lead in the areas of influence that you have been purposefully placed in.

SPRINGTIME MAINTENANCE TIPS
Regular service of the cooling and braking system actually SAVES money, not to mention stress and headaches caused by a breakdown.
Engine Coolant Change Every 30k Miles or 3 Years!
Over time, coolant loses it’s effectiveness to lubricate the water pump and other important coolant system components. Service also address the following issues:
• Balances pH & Ethylene Glycol Levels
• Prevents overheating
• Prevents foam and rust in system
• Longer component life
Brake Fluid Change Every 30k Miles or 3 Years!
Brake fluid requires regular service because it is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture naturally. Vapor and air leads to a feeling of a “soft” brake pedal, and greatly increases stopping distance (a major safety concern). Service also address the following issues:
• Helps prevent leaks in brake system
• Longer component life
• Helps maintain proper brake operation

LYNDSEY CUMBERLAND PLAYS A DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR WITH YOUR ASSETS

PHOTOGRAPHY
BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHYA wild turkey hunter parked his pristine 4WD truck and ventured into the woods. After an unsuccessful day, he found his truck surrounded by horses licking its exterior. The truck was covered with teeth marks, the fenders were chewed on and the doors were dented. Why? He recalled using a carnauba car wax with the scent of bananas, which had attracted the curious animals.
— Actual claim by a Farmers Insurance customer
“How effective can you be at the Super Bowl without a defensive coordinator?” History has shown that defense wins games (think back to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50), so without a defensive coordinator, you have no chance. Lyndsey Cumberland's role as a Farmers Insurance Agent for her clients mirrors being a defensive coordinator in life. “Life can throw unexpected challenges your way. I’m here locally to ensure you’re prepared.”
Lyndsey's approach as a life defensive coordinator helps her understand her clients’ life circumstances— such as where they live, family life and hobbies—and then ensures they’re adequately covered. Lyndsey gives her clients ample time and attention to make informed decisions. “By understanding a client’s lifestyle, I can identify gaps in coverage.”
Another benefit of working with her is knowing the risks in the area, such as hail damage. Since Colorado falls within “Hail Alley,” we can expect catastrophic hail storms nine times a year, resulting in substantial damage. Lyndsey recalls a client contacting her after one particularly nasty bout of hail. Lyndsey provided tarps to help cover her client’s damaged car and sunroof until help arrived. For Lyndsey, this exemplifies how a local insurance representative can assist during life's challenges.
Speaking of challenging times, Lyndsey has a network of professionals—roofers, plumbers, auto repair shops and more—to help quickly, thereby also supporting local businesses.
“Life can throw unexpected challenges your way. I’m here locally to ensure you’re prepared.”
Instead of relying on online forms and hoping for adequate coverage, consider meeting with Lyndsey and allowing her to be your life’s defensive coordinator. After all, you may return from a family hike to discover that your car has been broken into by a bear happily munching on your kids’ Goldfish crackers.
Lyndsey Cumberland - Farmers Insurance

Family Hearing is not only staffed with experts who are knowledgeable and up to date in their field, but they are as professional as the practice itself. I can highly recommend this business without hesitation. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

MAMMA BEAR DOES WHAT IT TAKES

can still remember that sweet new baby scent, the velvety soft skin, and the sound of each new coo coming from Josh, her healthy baby boy. She was happily adjusting to life as a young woman, wife, student and a first-time mom. And then Josh’s health challenges began.

“Gina simply beams when talking about her grandchildren.”
When he was a few months old, Gina observed some strange episodes of startling followed by a rash, which the pediatrician assured her was normal. On Gina's birthday, Josh had his 6-month check-up, which included watching her baby get those dreaded shots. Within an hour of getting home, he had a seizure. Twenty-nine hours later, he had another seizure that resulted in a hospital visit, where he had yet another seizure. This is every mom's worst nightmare.
Thus began a four-year journey of searching for answers for the continued seizures including infantile spasms (a rare and challenging condition with a high likelihood of brain damage), profound developmental delays, mobility and eating issues, and non-verbal communication. Throughout it all, Gina’s determination never wavered. Multiple rounds of tests, injections, medications and much more culminated in a week-long visit to the Mayo Clinic, which Gina took as a sign that they would finally get
answers. Unfortunately, they walked away defeated. At this point came acceptance and a mindset of doing what you need to do and trusting your instincts.
During those early years of Josh’s health journey, Gina welcomed two more children, Nicholas (Nick) and Molly, both neurotypical. Gina constantly worried about all her kids and admits to being a helicopter mom. One blessing is that the kids all took care of each other. Unfortunately, she didn’t have much of a support system which led to the breakdown of friendships and, ultimately, her marriage.
Championing the children's needs, the family moved to Broomfield so all three children could attend school together at Kohl Elementary, which had an inclusive special needs program. During the kids’ younger years, Gina created a great support system for all her kids through activities, sports and school, which grew as the kids got older. At the same time, Gina graduated from college with a degree in American Sign Language Interpreting.

During their transition to Broomfield, Gina naturally connected to a handful of families she met through church, all wanting a better life for their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Their passion to advocate for their children’s future built the foundation, and in 1998 they launched FRIENDS of Broomfield. Starting with a focus on recreation and social opportunities, the group expanded its scope and grew rapidly over the years. The organization flourished with Gina’s determination and became a recognized 501c3 charitable organization in 2002.
Always in the back of her mind was what kind of support Josh would have when he “aged out” of traditional programs, typically at age 18 or 21. Gina didn’t want a gap in what Josh and others were learning—she wanted them to continue to build on those skills. Thus began a day program at FRIENDS. Through the day program, it is believed that when adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given the opportunity and support to participate and contribute to the community, all of our lives are enriched. Gina’s non-profit baby, FRIENDS of Broomfield, now supports over 230 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities like Josh.
Gina drew her inspiration from her grandma, a remarkable woman who balanced business with community service. Her grandma's influence instilled in Gina the importance of balancing work and family responsibilities, inspiring her to be a
“My mom is my everything: my rock, my friend, my shoulder to cry on, my voice of reason. She inspires me with her incredible passion to help others. Her devotion to her family are the same qualities that drive her successful non-profit.”

strong role model for her own children. She wanted her daughter to see that you don’t have to pick being a mom or having a career— you can have both.
Today, Gina’s life is more fulfilling than ever! She is married to Ryun, a retired police officer who wholeheartedly embraced Gina’s children. Although Ryun never had kids of his own, his niece has Down Syndrome, equipping him to be a father figure in Josh’s life. Gina simply beams when talking about her grandchildren, who include Madison (7), Luke (6), Jack (5), Olivia (4) and Miles (1). The family has a strong bond, and they spend time together often. Nick is a project manager, and Molly is a special education teacher. They both serve
on the young professionals advisory board for FRIENDS and volunteer at all the fundraisers. Meanwhile, Josh happily lives at home, requiring care 24/7. Additionally, Gina and Ryun have opened their hearts and home to Marvin, a best pal to Josh and participant at FRIENDS of Broomfield.
Gina is a true advocate for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. From her role as a teacher’s aide in a high school special education class to her current role as CEO and Founder of FRIENDS of Broomfield, Gina’s journey has been remarkable. Gina wears many titles being a wife, grandma, professional and believer, but her favorite title is mama bear.

Tune Back Into Life
ARTICLE BY JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHYFrustrated and embarrassed.
For the past twenty years, Eric has been working hard as a local financial advisor, helping individuals and families in need of expert help in investing and planning for their future. Being a father himself, he can relate to the balancing act of a busy family, which is one of the many reasons people trust him with their finances. Recently, during meetings with clients at coffee shops or restaurants, he felt embarrassed and frustrated. No matter how hard he tried, background noise made it very difficult to hear and understand the voices of his potential clients.
15% OF AMERICAN ADULTS ARE MISSING OUT ON MORE THAN WORDS.

“THEY HAD THE TOOLS, THE TIME, THE TECHNOLOGY AND THE EXPERIENCE. TOTALLY DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE FROM THE FIRST PLACE I WENT TO.”
"I’M SORRY, CAN YOU REPEAT THAT?”
Eric was fed up with repeating that line. He worried that it was harming his ability to appear competent in his work and felt anxious that it would impact his relationships. Eric also loves music, and taking his son to live shows around town is a favorite pastime. His hearing loss was making it hard to fully enjoy that quality time.
TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE.
As fate would have it, he bumped into Chelsea Walters, co-owner of Family Hearing in Broomfield, at a community hearing screening event. Her empathetic approach, sharp wit, and sense of humor instantly helped him trust her. He felt comfortable sharing his story and seeking her guidance on how to treat his hearing loss so he could participate in the moments he’d lost touch with.
SOLUTIONS THAT GO BEYOND HEARING DEVICES.
Coincidentally, when Eric and Chelsea met, he was already in the process of trying out different hearing devices. But the fit was uncomfortable, the sound quality was artificial, and the results were insubstantial. Chelsea brought Eric in for an appointment with Tyana Bruso, an Audiology Technician, who tested the devices and explained that while she found nothing technically wrong, it was obvious that they weren’t meeting his needs. A comprehensive analysis of his hearing and goals revealed that more effective treatment was possible.
SAY “HELLO” TO EVIDENCE-BASED HEARING TREATMENT.
Eric’s experience supported the rating of a significant hearing handicap based on the survey Tyana sent before his appointment. By putting a number to his subjective experience, the Family Hearing clinicians validated what he was going through and now had a target they were set to beat. Together, Eric and the Family Hearing Team uncovered a substantial hearing loss, sampled various fitting styles, and met regularly for programming adjustments to build the solution that empowered him to hear confidently.

Chelsea Walters & Jennifer La Borde
CO-OWNERS OF FAMILY HEARING
Audible laughter is the trademark of any meeting between Jen & Chelsea, co-owners of Family Hearing in Broomfield. While they both love helping people communicate, they approach it from complementary skill sets.
Since childhood, Jen has been drawn to non-verbal expression. Her love of dance led her to her husband, falling in love while learning Argentine Tango. She is also fluent in American Sign Language, which is what introduced her to the world of hearing loss in the first place.
As for Chelsea, she will always fill the silence. Whether singing or sharing a thought, it’s rare that she doesn’t have something to talk about. Her husband says she and their 5-year-old son compete for airspace. She was drawn to hearing care through a love of engaging with people and listening to their stories. It is only fitting that she revitalizes others’ ability to do the same through her work.
For the last seven years co-owning Family Hearing, Jen and Chelsea have learned that their distinct communication styles allow them to help their practice, the people they serve, and a team of competent women thrive.
FINDING A SOLUTION THAT ACTUALLY WORKS.
Several months after his initial consultation and best practice fitting series, Eric could not be happier. His follow-up survey indicated he improved from a significant handicap to no handicap. Similarly, his ability to understand speech in background noise was comparable to someone with near-normal hearing ability using his devices. In his opinion, “They had the tools, the time, the technology and the experience. Totally different experience from the first place I went to.”
NOT “BAD ENOUGH” TO TREAT.
In other cases, commonly for younger to middle-aged adults, clinicians sometimes minimize mild hearing loss. Even though symptoms bother the patient, treatment is not recommended. This was the case with Laila. She met Family Hearing after visiting several hearing care specialists who told her that her audiogram wasn’t “bad enough” to treat, which left her feeling invalidated since she was struggling to participate in family events. Family Hearing took her pain seriously and after a few appointments, Laila felt that she could get back to being the involved mom and the grandma she wanted to be. “Each individual experience sounds differently,” explains the audiologist, Dr. Anna Hopkins. “It’s common that some people don’t notice a mild hearing loss and others are severely impacted by it.”
I FELT HEARD.
Laila’s difficulties finding someone who will listen are too common. But that all changed at Family Hearing. Even though her hearing loss was marginal compared to Eric’s, they fine-tuned her hearing technology until feeling like an outsider in conversations became a thing of the past. “When I walked into Family Hearing, I was greeted with a big smile. Everybody is so kind, understanding, knowledgeable, professional, and helpful. I felt HEARD, pun intended!”
Conversations with the people who matter are the heart of a life well-lived, yet 15% of American adults are left out due to hearing loss. We hope these stories shed light on the impact that compassionate care and evidence-based treatment provide so that more people can tune back into life!

Surviving Breast Cancer with Courage, Candor, and Community.
Sabrina Skiles lives her passion by helping women through their journey with breast cancer. Inspired by her mother, Sabrina penned and published her memoir addressing topics often not touched on by medical professionals. The yoga-loving mother of two writes with humor and candor, and shares practical tips that help other young women weather the same storm. But her influence doesn’t end with publishing her magnum opus. While receiving dozens of fuzzy socks from well-meaning loved ones during treatment, Sabrina also got a bag of truly helpful items like essential oils that help with chemo-induced headaches and nausea, and honey ginger candy to combat the metallic taste that chemo leaves in your mouth. The brilliant young woman recognized the need for practical gifts for cancer patients and went on to create Mauka Wellness Kits. The kits are filled with curated items that are pragmatic and helpful to those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. Through both her writing and her work, Sabrina endeavors to normalize conversations about breast health. She empowers women to be their own best advocates. Sabrina dreams big about being on the Today Show to share her book and Mauka Wellness Kits. “Life is hard. But we aren’t meant to do it alone. I want to continue to create this beautiful community of women who build each other up and celebrate all milestones, big or small.”
Lauren Robydek
Owner of Nothing Bundt Cakes. Broomfield Rotarian. Broomfield Chamber. 100 Women Who Care.
“It’s not life or death, it’s just cake!” can often be heard within the cozy walls of the Nothing Bundt Cakes’ bakery, as Lauren Robydek and her teammates keep things in perspective. It’s a good motto to live by in the outside world too, when we let small things dominate our lives. The good-humored owner of the Westminster and Wheat Ridge bakeries got into the cake business while looking for something more fun and fulfilling than her previous careers as a stock/real estate broker. Nothing Bundt Cakes was co-founded by the mother of a childhood friend, and after meeting this friend for coffee, Lauren uprooted her family and moved to Colorado to own a bakery. Lauren loves being part of a community that “steps up like no other to take care of its people.” Lauren plays a big part in serving Broomfield. She gives back to us both as a Rotarian and as a member of 100 Women Who Care. While being active in our community, Lauren manages to find time to play with and snuggle her one and fiveyear old children. She dreams of someday getting adequate sleep. In the meantime, Lauren delights in bringing joy to her neighbors through sharing cake!

Kukis Moran
Owner of iFOAM
Kukis spent a quarter of a century in the corporate world, where she saw very talented people go unnoticed and passed over for opportunities due to their gender or race. Seeing all that wasted potential fueled her passion for developing leaders and advocating for the inclusion of women and minorities in technology fields. The owner of iFOAM grew up in Chihuahua, Mexico, graduated from Regis University, and went on to earn her Masters at the University of Denver. After a highly successful corporate career, Kukis launched her own business in the insulation industry. She loves the convergence of science, technology, and environmental stewardship in spray foam insulation. Kukis also gets deep satisfaction from helping others solve problems, especially in offices and living spaces. Kukis’s experience owning a small business makes her an exemplary role model for her entrepreneurial daughter. Even with her long list of professional achievements and accolades, Kukis says, “It’s the little things that I am able to do for people that are my most satisfying accomplishments.” When she’s not innovating and mentoring, Kukis loves hiking, watching movies, and traveling with her wife. You also might find her creating her own science in the kitchen with her sisters.

Beth Gustin
Therapist & Owner of Transitioning Through Change
Beth Gustin was made for counseling. Well acquainted with personal loss and grief, Beth feels not only comfortable but also deeply privileged when people let her walk alongside them in the midst of a painful season. “Vulnerability takes courage,” Gustin remarks, “and I am honored to hear about the courageous steps people take when in their grief and realizing they can do the thing they’d not thought possible!” From an early age, Beth’s friends sought her out to talk about their problems. She became a peer counselor for younger students in the 8th grade, and went on to volunteer in hospice grief and homeless shelters. Now, as a licensed professional counselor, Beth continues to help people process their grief. Whether dealing with the loss of a pet or family member or the sudden loss of physical abilities, individuals find a safe space with Beth. Manolo, Beth’s service dog, adds to the warmth of the environment at Transitioning Through Change. Together they help members of our community move from hopelessness to a place of renewed purpose. In her free time, you might find Beth ziplining across the Royal Gorge, belting out karaoke tunes, or playing games with friends. She loves humor and kindness, and endeavors to make a positive difference in the lives of each individual whose path she crosses.

Let Hope Shape Your Future
ARTICLE BY JUSTIN SCHIERKOLK PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY
To say that John Capra is proud of his son is a wild understatement.
Zachary Capra was born and raised in Colorado. He was a devoted athlete, playing ice hockey, lacrosse, and golf. After graduating from Mountain Range High School in 2011, he joined the United States Navy, serving four years aboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman. Zachary completed two tours in the Persian Gulf, and during that time he became inspired to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot.
In August of 2016, after his commitment to the Navy was complete, Zachary attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.
On April 4, 2018, his journey to become a commercial airline pilot was tragically cut short when he lost his life after the small engine plane he was flying crashed.
In honor of his son’s legacy, John started Tailwinds of Hope, a nonprofit with a mission to award annual scholarships to aspiring pilots.
“Zach inspired people to follow their dreams and it is the family’s hope that scholarships given in his name will support others in achieving their dreams and living an abundant life.”
