Sometimes a song captures everything I want to say, and this is one of those times. I love this song… it’s a simple story where a curious boy is asking his grandfather about some old pictures. What the boy got in return was invaluable quality time with his grandfather, who shared the story behind each photograph, building up to the end, where he concludes “That’s the story of my life, right there in black and white.”
Here's a snippet of the song and a couple of questions for consideration: How are you using your time? Will your future self look back, thankful for how you invested it?
From “In Color” by Jamey Johnson
I said, "Grandpa, what's this picture here?
It's all black and white, and it ain't real clear
Is that you there?", he said, "Yeah, I was 11"
"And times were tough back in '35
That's me and Uncle Joe just tryna survive a cotton farm
In a great depression"
"If it looks like we were scared to death
Like a couple of kids just tryna save each other
You should've seen it in color."
From all of us here at Broomfield Lifestyle, we appreciate that you invest some of your time with us, which is really an investment in your community.
In closing, please remember—cherish each moment!

“Car maintenance is an important investment for the safety, performance and overall enjoyment of all the cars in our family. I don't want my wife and kids stranded on the side of the road or to have to spend an unexpected day at the shop getting something fixed that I could have prevented from breaking. By having 5th Gear Automotive maintain all of our vehicles, I rest knowing I am putting my family's safety first.”

Everyone enjoyed learning about plants, gardening, how hydroponics works, planting seeds, caring for plants, watching them grow and bringing them home. There were visits from beneficial bugs (ladybugs/ worms), and everyone was blown away with some fun plant experiments. It's safe to say plants make people happy! CONTINUED >

It was a sweltering 100-degree day in August 2014. Roger Japp and Steven Linenberger had just purchased a house together, and they were on their way to their new home to celebrate with a bottle of champagne! They walked into the 80+ degree house, which was understandable since no one lived there then. Too excited to care, they turned on the AC and sipped their bubbly.
“One of the lessons from this story is how important regular maintenance is to keep equipment operating optimally.”
Roger vividly remembers that Tuesday night. He and Steven returned on Thursday to start moving in, expecting a cool home after leaving the AC on. Yet they walked into an 86-degree house! Roger frantically called Nate from To the T Plumbing & Heating to investigate. And then, with sweat rolling down, they moved in.
When Nate arrived, he did an inspection. Roger and Steven received the grim news that the previous homeowners hadn’t done any maintenance work on their HVAC system, such as changing the air filters and cleaning the air ducts. As a result, the AC unit couldn’t lower the temperature enough to cool the house.
To get things working again, Nate’s team took apart the entire furnace to clean it. They then cleaned all the air ducts and replaced the filters. It wasn’t a small task. Or a cheap fix.
On top of that, Nate explained that the AC unit was meant for a smaller home, and they needed a unit designed to cool the space properly.
Well, after that large, unexpected expense, Roger and Steven managed with the smaller unit for six years, which mostly worked out. During the hottest times of the year, the AC kicked on at 7 am and didn’t stop until 10 pm. When it was just too miserable upstairs, their workaround was to go to the basement.
Finally, in the summer of 2020, Roger and Steven called Nate again and purchased the right-sized AC unit for their house.
We’ve probably all had some kind of similar experience, and one lesson from this story is how important regular maintenance is to keep equipment operating optimally. If the previous owners had taken care of their HVAC system, Roger and Steven would’ve “enjoyed” moving into their new house with cool air to help offset the heat.
In addition to being physically comfortable, regular maintenance can prevent angst, worry and disruption to your daily life. It literally can help you sleep at night (physically again, but also mentally!).
To help their customers have restful nights of sleep, To the T offers a program called the Club Plan. This yearly maintenance plan includes three visits per year to optimize the HVAC system, reduced repair costs, and more. The goal is to provide “peace of mind so your family will be safe all year long.”
Chad Means also had the “pleasure” of the AC not working in the summer as well as a heater breakdown in the middle of winter. As a result of these situations, Chad firmly believes in investing in preventative care. Chad decided to purchase the maintenance plan with To the T since HVAC equipment and repairs aren’t cheap, and they wanted the protection to save money and ensure the units function properly for their comfort.
The Club Plan offers the additional benefit of receiving priority scheduling during emergencies. As Roger, Stephen and Chad have experienced, waiting a week or more can be miserable, so it's important to get the emergency taken care of as quickly as possible.
When investing in your home, explore options that go beyond replacing a piece of equipment. For example, when it was time to replace the AC unit after a year of limping along with added freon, Chad opted to install more energy-efficient units plus a REME air purifying system, which reduces bacteria and odors throughout the entire house. “Our home is our largest investment, and protecting it is crucial. The new, energy-efficient units provide cleaner air," says Chad. "To the T's maintenance plan helps us preserve and safeguard our investment."
“The goal is to provide peace of mind so your family will be safe all year long.”
When Steven's grandma moved into the neighborhood just four blocks away, they recommended To the T for her home needs. To the T installed a reverse osmosis system to remove contaminants from water in her kitchen. In addition, Nate recommended higher toilet seats as a safer option, which all guests seem to love too!
As winter and the cold turn to the warmth of spring, those 100-degree days might seem like a distant memory. Yet now might be the perfect time to make sure your house is ready for the heat, so you can sleep comfortably knowing that your home—your biggest investment— receives proper care.

THE IMMEASURABLE VALUE OF INVESTING IN A FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER TO CARRY YOUR FAMILY’S STORY INTO THE FUTURE.
My son’s clear blue eyes and his incredible disposition come from her. His gentleness defies the nature of an eight-year-old boy. His thoughtfulness constantly delights and surprises me. The way he tunes into the feelings of those around him mirrors how she made everyone feel seen. Though my incredible mom passed away less than a month after our son was born, so much of her lives on in him. I talk about my mom often, not just with Everett, but also with my two girls who sandwich him on either side. We keep her memory alive by making her special yogurt pancakes, pausing on hikes with our eyes closed to “just listen,” and noticing the beauty of God’s creation all around us. In addition to these little remembrances of the amazing woman who raised me, I’m particularly grateful for the photographs we have of her. They are some of my most precious possessions.
Not surprisingly, family photographs are some of the first things people grab when having to evacuate their homes. Fire-proof safes guard portraits. Wedding photos get passed down from generation to generation to find homes on the walls of grandchildren. Pictures tell our story and root us to family members who have passed. The value of family photographs surpasses most other material belongings. Therefore we protect them, care for them and are wise to invest in them.

“Photos leave a legacy long after we’re gone. They root us to our past and carry our stories into the future.”
Sarah Schierkolk, local family photographer and owner of Sarah Dawn Photography, constantly has her eye behind the lens, capturing the seasons of her own children. “Candid photos are amazing!” she shares, “Take tons and enjoy them!” However, photos from our smartphones, though often posted online, don’t usually become valuable family heirlooms inherited by our children. We take a plethora of them and most stay somewhere on our computers or in “the cloud.” Alternatively, professional family photos become art on our walls, remind us daily of past seasons shared, touch our friends as Christmas cards, and greet grandparents on personalized coffee mugs. When talking about personal photos vs professional family photos, Sarah encourages people to, “Do both!”
Sarah Schierkolk - Owner of Sarah Dawn Photography
“I try to capture the essence of the family’s connection in all the little moments.”
There are lots of reasons why people don’t invest in professional family photos. “I might not like how they turn out,” “We will look staged and awkward,” and “My kids (or husband) won’t cooperate,” are some common objections to hiring a family photographer. But a good family photographer has a bag of tricks and tips to avoid these mishaps. “I always send a questionnaire to families before a shoot,” Sarah explains. “I find out things like their goals for the shoot, their kids' interests and passions, and if the family has a special place they’d like to be.” For example, if a young child has a favorite movie character, sometimes Sarah will go buy that little figurine. She’ll do a shoot in the neighborhood park where they spend lots of time or capture them playing together in the mountains. “This isn’t a JCPenney portrait,” Sarah laughs, “I try to capture the essence of the family’s connection in all the little moments.”
Sarah loves getting to know each family on a personal level. “I’ve made friends with the families that I’ve gotten to photograph year after year. I get to see these kids grow and change and watch their personalities come out,” she reminisces. Even clients she only gets to film once, for example with senior pictures, bring her joy as they share who they are and who they want to become. During shoots, Sarah likes to have fun with her clients, make people laugh, and capture genuine joy. As a mother herself, she also understands that moms who are often taking the photos at family gatherings or children’s special events, rarely make it in the photos themselves. “I like taking the stress and responsibility of photography away from Mom, and letting everyone actually enjoy the moment. I capture images that they can cherish for years to come.”
Each season passes by in the blink of an eye, and we don’t get a second chance to relive them. In five years, you won’t regret investing in professional family photos, you’ll only regret not having them. Photos leave a legacy long after we’re gone. They root us to our past and carry our stories into the future.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING TRUSTWORTHY, PASSIONATE AND EMPATHETIC COACHES ON YOUR TEAM WHO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ENSURE YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES’ SUCCESS.
When it comes to planning for your financial future – whether your own or for those you love – there’s a 3-word mantra that fits best: Peace of Mind. It’s a mantra perfectly reflected by the experiences of Broomfielders Sara and Sam Taylor and a Denver Metro area woman who prefers to just be called Susan who both turned to the Summit Financial Solutions team for that planning support.
The Taylors’ Broomfield story began when they met and settled here in the 1980s. Over the years Sam worked for several companies, ran one of his own, and served for eight years on the Broomfield City Council. Ultimately, he was hired as the CEO of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce, where he was working when he suffered a massive heart attack in 2022. En route to the hospital, he said he remembers thinking, “So this is what dying feels like.”Given only a seven percent chance of survival, he beat the odds, and by December of 2022, he had moved on to a new job as Director of Colorado Loans to Improve Mainstreet Business Economic Recovery (CLIMBER), created by the Colorado Legislature to assist small businesses.
Sara’s career looked a little different than she expected, happily becoming the primary caregiver for their son Benjamin, who had infantile spasms as a baby, leaving him nonverbal and unable to walk, and requiring 24/7 care for the rest of his life. Sara has coordinated Benjamin’s elaborate support system by recruiting help and managing the care he needs. In recent years the Taylors started planning for both their own and Benjamin’s long-term future – a major piece of that being a life insurance plan put in place for them by Aaron Rask at Summit Financial.
“Benjamin will need a place to live for the rest of his life,” Sam said. “Our house has been retrofitted and is wheelchair accessible, but we started wondering what would happen when we would no longer be there.” When the house directly behind theirs came up for sale, their daughter Bethany and her husband bought it, giving them a new possibility. The Taylors obtained permission to build Broomfield’s first Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), a “tiny house,” in their backyard, directly between theirs and their daughter’s home. Designed by Sara, the freestanding structure eventually will become their residence. And Benjamin will be cared for in their current home, fitted out for all of his needs. The insurance policy, along with their other investments, will help them preserve the living environment that he has had for most of his life.
The Taylors said as they thought about their plans Aaron’s coaching advice to them was “Be unstoppable.” Be able to say, “Yes, I can do that. You can do that for your family. Go for your dreams and keep going.” Aaron and his colleague Dave Manley at Summit stress the importance of having “coaches” on your team as you set yourself up for long-term financial stability. “That’s critical,” Sam said. “People often don’t understand financial risk, and you need someone like Aaron to walk you through it. What are your goals? What might work best for you? What are the downsides? Aaron is really, really good at coaching that, “It’s not how much money you have, but what you do with it that matters most.”
As for Susan’s situation, she was struggling to juggle being the sole caregiver and provider for both her disabled parents and neighbor and serving in ministry, while dealing with an investment situation that was collapsing. During this, her longtime CPA suddenly died. At that point she not only lost her accountant but a trusted financial advisor. She frantically tried to find assurance in someone else just as reliable only to be dismissed by several financial advisers she was referred to, leaving her desperate to figure out how to care for her parents and neighbor and also for herself in the long term.
CONTINUED >
“I received a postcard in the mail and went to a workshop about long-term investing. That was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made.” The product she signed up for essentially was going to leave her in an even more dire financial situation and she wasn’t sure where to turn. Meanwhile, her dad passed, her mom needed to be moved to a facility and her parents had no investments to cover the large expenses left for Susan to deal with. And that's when she was finally referred to Dave Manley at Summit Financial Solutions, who not only helped dig her out of the hole into which she had fallen but also helped her set up a good financial plan for her mother before she passed. “We were able to make some adjustments to that bad plan because he helped me set up a phone call with the other company and helped me ask the right
questions about what I had and what I could do next.” All of which was a huge relief.
It was a complicated procedure but ultimately led her into a new program that will do what it is supposed to do when the time comes. With that peace of mind, she said she’s been able to get back to focusing on the work she loves and hobbies like photography and art inspired by both her parents. “Dad was a photographer; Mom was an artist,” Susan said. “I love nature and photography, and my Dad taught me how to use his Single Lens Reflex camera to follow in that passion. I was really quite good at it, but after I spent so many years caregiving, sadly I lost much of that knowledge. Now I’m able to renew my interest in photography using a variety of cameras.”
A missionary for more than 30 years, Susan works for a national organization that assists International University students “in about every way imaginable” as they come to study in the U.S. She personally helps with their arrivals and arranges volunteers to assist them until they are settled. She helps with everything from the basics like opening bank accounts, finding apartments, shopping for furniture and learning how to navigate grocery stores with unfamiliar food. In a more intentional and meaningful way, she pairs each student up with an American family, counsels them during difficult situations and walks alongside them praying with them through their faith journey. Though many may not have a faith background,“ I am able to help them in their spiritual growth.”
An enjoyable spinoff from her mission work has been the opportunity to travel to visit students in their home countries after they graduate. “I get to meet their families and see where they live.” Among her favorite visits have been to Japan, China, New Zealand and Portugal. “Whether it's in the U.S. or abroad, I take photos wherever I go.”
In addition to renewing her photography skills, she’s also learning to paint. “My mom did oils and acrylics, and we had a dream to learn watercolor painting together.” Since life’s circumstances did not make room for that, “I’m now taking painting lessons, primarily watercolor and oils.”
Meanwhile, she’s feeling much more reassured about what lies ahead thanks to Dave’s assistance with planning for her financial needs as she starts to approach her retirement years. “It’s good to know that I have things in place financially, and Dave has really helped me get prepared for that.”
Both Susan and the Taylors agree that Aaron and Dave are more than financial advisors. They look out for their clients almost as if they are family. “When Sam had his heart attack and was in the ER, he was convinced he was going to die,” Sara Taylor said. “If he had died, I would have been totally confident in saying to Aaron: ‘What do we do?’ He’s just trustworthy that way.” She said she would have been completely confident in Aaron’s advice.
“He instills the confidence in you that he will be there for you every step of the way.”
“I didn’t have a good support system to help me,” Susan said. “It was because I didn’t have that that it’s taken me so long to recover. Staying on top of the heavy load of responsibilities, there wasn't time to take care of myself, and consequently, I lost track of my own financial situation. With Dave’s support, wisdom and advice, I was able to regain control. He coached me through the trenches and always with a smile. He is trustworthy, brought stability back into my life and built my confidence in having my financial plan back in order.” With his guidance, she said she's regained her peace of mind.

“PEOPLE OFTEN DON’T UNDERSTAND FINANCIAL RISK AND YOU NEED SOMEONE LIKE AARON TO WALK YOU THROUGH IT.”
INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
It is imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. A room needs a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, and I see this so many times, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I always add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Also, candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.
Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.
Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness.
