One of the most treasured liberties we enjoy in American culture is the freedom to express ourselves as we wish. We have the freedom to adopt and change our own style at will.
While the exploration of style in our community could go in many directions, School of Rock Broomfield and Jewelfire Diamonds of Broomfield take the spotlight this month. At a glance, there may not be much in common between music education and high-end jewelry. But taking a deeper look reveals that both share the common goal of helping others find and express their own unique individuality.
As Jennifer Moriarta, owner of School of Rock Broomfield puts it, “Everyone has their own style. If you play the same song with two different drummers, you’ll hear two different versions of a song.”
In the world of jewelry, Khristy Nash and her team at Jewelfire Diamonds of Broomfield help people connect memories, stories, emotions, and style to create timeless heirlooms from jewelry that might otherwise become a forgotten artifact.
So in the spirit of “freedom of expression,” I’ll express to you my gratitude for your support as a reader of this monthly publication. I speak for the team here when I say how much we enjoy connecting you to your community with each issue. We know your time is valuable, so thank you for spending a bit of it with us!

the thrill of conquering a challenging mountain summit or simply cherish the opportunity to explore new trails and the great outdoors. Here are their tips & tricks for happy hiking…
1. OBEY THE WRITTEN TRAILHEAD SIGNAGE
Many trailhead signs give important and helpful information such as routes with distances and a map of the area. Some will also list hazard warnings to alert you to recent obstacles on the trail in addition to warnings of increased prevalence of particular wildlife in the area with safety precautions should you encounter a bear or mountain lion for example.
Hiking in the mountains is one of the most effective ways to leave behind the noise, stress and pressures of a daily urban existence. Study after scientific study has shown that the health benefits for both the body AND mind from hiking and time spent outdoors are numerous. For stressed-out Americans, an opportunity to start living a healthier life can be as simple as getting outdoors more and hitting some hiking trails. Yet as more individuals realize the wonderful health benefits of hiking, some of those trails can become a bit overcrowded. With more people sharing the trails it’s essential for hikers to understand the written and unwritten rules of the trail. So we met up with the team at Adventum Colorado, a group of four friends who discovered a mutual passion for hiking the extraordinary mountain landscapes of the Colorado Rockies. After multiple hikes as well as summiting several of Colorado’s esteemed 14ers together, the foursome decided to launch a company that celebrates the adventurous spirit of outdoor enthusiasts everywhere who enjoy
2.
Don’t step off the trail unless it is absolutely necessary when yielding to others. Hiking off the trail can be dangerous for hikers as the ground can be uneven, slippery or rocky which could lead to a sprained ankle or other unfortunate injury with just one misstep. Hiking off trail is also damaging to vital plant life… think about if young tree saplings are toppled over by hiking boots…they will be prevented from developing into new plants and large trees which are crucial for our beautiful forests.
Downhill hikers should always yield to uphill hikers. When you’re descending a trail, step aside. This is a courtesy to uphill hikers as it takes more energy and effort to go uphill than down. But keep in mind that many uphill hikers (especially at higher altitudes above treeline) will gladly welcome a little rest and may possibly signal to downhill hikers to proceed past them while they take a breather.
4. GIVE A HOOT; DON’T POLLUTE!
Those of us ‘70s children may remember this famous slogan from the U.S. Forest Service’s national symbol/advertising character Woodsy the Owl. While it should be common sense not to litter, it’s astonishing how much trash is still found along hiking trails all over the country.
5. WHEN NATURE CALLS…
We’ve all been there…when nature calls, find a discreet place to go. Just as you would bring for your other trash, bring large ziplock bags to dispose of used toilet paper, tissues or other sanitary supplies and pack it out with you.
6. DO NOT DISTURB WILDLIFE
This should be a no-brainer but it’s quite bewildering how many people get too close to wildlife while trying to snap a selfie with a bighorn sheep, mountain goat, elk or moose. It’s an all too familiar news story we hear about—visitors get too close to wildlife and since they are in fact wild animals, they react with sometimes tragic consequences.
Thanks to the team at Adventum Colorado, we now are ready to hit the trails and play well with others. And if you find yourself summiting your first or fortieth 14er, celebrate by heading to adventumcolorado.com and grab some swag to remember the ultimate thrill and pride of such an achievement.
Happy Trails!
Rocks and stones have enamored silver-haired stunner Khristy Nash for as long as she can remember. The gems exhibits in museums always enticed her as a child, and she curated multiple rock collections of her own. The proceeds from Ms. Nash’s first jobs in the 80s went mostly towards jewelry, putting it on layaway as gifts for her family. During one such shopping excursion at the Westminster Mall’s J C Keepsake Diamonds store, Khristy’s vivacious personality and obvious enjoyment of accessories caught the owner’s attention. Later that night, she called Ms. Nash out of the blue and offered her a job. Though Khristy never intended to go into the jewelry industry, she excitedly accepted the offer, then proceeded to work her way up the bedazzled ladder. In 2021 a long-time friend, and former owner of Jewelfire Diamonds of Broomfield, sold the business into Khristy’s capable hands. Since then, Ms. Nash and her team have expertly supplied our community with gorgeous custom jewelry.
“I LOVE what I get to do for my job!” Khristy gushed when asked about her favorite aspects of owning and designing for Jewelfire. “It’s so fun, but it’s also deeply emotional.” Most people are ecstatic when buying new jewelry, but the majority of the store’s business doesn’t come from new merchandise. Over 70% of Jewelfire’s business consists of repairing and restoring jewelry and reshaping family heirlooms into wearable memories. Recently, for example, a tall, distinguished older gentleman walked into the store holding a gold wedding band. The clean-shaven Coast Guard veteran’s heart ached with the recent loss of his bride, the love of his life. As the couple had no children to whom they might bequeath her wedding band, Mr. Smith requested the band be incorporated into a dog tag that he could keep and wear. Khristy and Jewelfire’s expert craftsmen cut the wedding band in half and ran it along either side of a yellow gold dog tag bearing the couple’s names, “their song,” and a few other significant words chosen by the widower. Though Mr. Smith no longer gets to look into his wife’s eyes every day, he now wears a meaningful reminder of her next to his heart.
Another customer drove to Broomfield from Alamosa a few weeks ago. This woman’s mother recently passed away, leaving to her only child the gold wedding band she’d worn for decades. Rather than stashing the valuable piece of jewelry in a drawer for safe keeping, only to be brought out on rare occasions, the daughter made the four-hour trek to visit Khristy and the Jewelfire team. Employing their creativity and expertise, they decided to melt down the ring, size it correctly for her finger, and imprint it with meaningful symbols. A dog paw for a beloved, four-legged friend and a three-leaf clover, a nod to her mother’s St. Patrick’s Day birth, now decorated the gold band. Her mother’s years of life adorn the interior surface. When the younger woman glances daily at her new ring, many precious memories that might have dimmed with the passing of time, now remain fresh.
“JEWELRY IS USUALLY TIED TO EMOTIONS: WHETHER CELEBRATING SOMETHING WONDERFUL OR GRIEVING A LOSS. I LOVE GETTING TO BE HERE FOR IT ALL.”
Khristy Nash loves working with her customers to find or design something that brings them happiness. The Jewelfire crew not only reshapes family heirlooms, but also creates one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. A few months ago, Khristy had the privilege of designing a ring for a soon-to-be high school graduate. The co-ed’s sweet aunt paid a visit to Khristy in Jewelfire’s classy, modern storefront, requesting a ring with two gemstones: blue topaz and peridot, a less-common jewel. While getting to know her new client, Khristy quickly learned the reason behind the specific stone selections. Though celebrating her niece’s graduation, the aunt simultaneously grieved the recent loss of her brother, the girl’s father. The two gems represented the birth months of the father and daughter. The Jewelfire team did not find an existing ring that would fulfill the aunt’s desires, but managed to procure two separate dainty rings bearing the birthstones. The talented jewelers soldered them together at an angle to create a beautiful new piece. When the niece, along with her aunt, uncle, and mother returned for the ring fitting, the young woman’s mother was so touched that she purchased a ring displaying her own birthstone that day.
The high school senior and her mother now have something to remind them of her father and the deep love their family shares. In the upcoming months, the sweet family will extend their bond to include more loved ones. Just last week, the graduate’s cousin paid a visit to Khristy and her team to purchase an engagement ring for his girlfriend! The newlyweds will build a little home on his parents' property right here in Broomfield.
Khristy tells the stories of her clients with heartfelt gladness. It’s obvious that family and relationships play a central role in how she lives life and does business. Her daughter-in-law, Nancy Silvas, works with Khristy and, along with the rest of the Jewelfire team, prioritizes people. They delight in getting to know each client’s unique experiences, tastes, and desires when helping them select or design a new piece. “Jewelry is usually tied to emotions: whether celebrating something wonderful or grieving a loss,” the classy local business owner shares, “I love getting to be here for it all.”
“I love how School of Rock programs don’t just teach my kid how to play their instrument, but also how to work with others. How to listen, collaborate, and pull together. Such great life lessons.” -Anita S

“Carolyn’s hypnotherapy is amazing! We had our session through Zoom and it was like she was sitting right in front of me. I tend to be an over-thinker and was worried that I couldn’t be hypnotized, or would at least resist, but she was able to gently guide me under in just a few minutes. The results of just one session have been profound and I have a knowing that the results are permanent. I highly recommend her and am looking forward to more sessions!” -Client, Samuel H
Kids discover their musical style at School of Rock.
Music is all about style and creativity, from instruments to music genres to clothing. Punk rock. Heavy metal. Classic rock. Blues. Each has its own beat, sound and look. And each person who performs brings their individuality to the table. The School of Rock, a music school, encourages that style and creativity in the students.
A musician’s choice of instrument is a reflection of their style. Each instrument has its own connotation, from the physical pounding on drums to the funky groove of a bass guitar. Guitar players can express contrasting moods by smoothly strumming or fast shredding. The voice is the instrument for others, and each singer has a unique and personal vocal tone.
According to Jennifer Moriarta, Owner / General Manager, “Everyone has their own style. If two drummers play the same song, you’ll hear two different versions.”
“In Broomfield, we have quite a few metal heads,” said Jennifer. “This style requires people with a lot of energy and passion, as metal is quite powerful. It’s a huge sound,
and it can be an angry sound. It resonates with teens and tweens as well as adult students.”
On the flip side, R&B/soul/blues is another genre. “It’s a softer sound, more elevated in style.” The School of Rock puts on a variety of music styles each season (about every four months). This fall, they’re doing an Aretha Franklin show, a Skate Punk show, Modern Metal, Arctic Monkeys and more. “We are a school first and foremost, so we encourage students to explore all the sub-genres of rock and roll here. Each new band or style of music teaches new concepts and techniques. We don’t teach music to put on shows—we put on shows to teach music, and over time, students become well-rounded musicians.”
Of course, clothing is a fun way to represent a type of music and enables kids to have another outlet for expression. Kids tend to have a certain look for a heavy metal show—ripped jeans, boots, and t-shirts. For the Music of Memphis show, “We encourage kids to wear dresses, fedoras, button-up shirts—that type of thing,” said Jennifer. “And for a classic rock show, kids wear jeans, white t-shirts and bandanas.”
“We’re a non-traditional music company,” explains Jennifer. “Parents typically had a music experience when they were growing up where you learn one instrument and then you give a solo or group recital. And parents are looking for something different for their kids.”
At School of Rock, kids usually have a focus instrument. They’re grouped into bands to learn a set of songs, and they give a rock concert (instead of a traditional recital).
Kids receive more than a music education at the School of Rock. “While kids come to learn an instrument, they get so much more—they learn the instrument, and they’re exposed to music that they may not know. They also learn teamwork and how to perform as a group, and they develop self-confidence to get up and perform in front of an audience.”
School of Rock strives for a sense of community inside and outside the school. If you walk into the school on any given day, you’ll find music blasting from a room or two, kids hanging out in the front room playing Jenga, and parents talking to teachers or the front office staff—it’s a social scene!
“We really strive to foster a music community here,” said Jennifer. “The kid years can be hard, especially for tweens and teens, and we want to give the kids a safe and fun place to be.”
To foster even more support for kids, the School of Rock at a national and local level supports The Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide.
Teachers are an important part of the community. “Our teachers, who are working musicians in the local music scene, are great role models for kids. They not only teach the kids how to play or sing, but they also teach them how to work together and help them be confident on stage.”
In addition to a sense of community inside the school, the School of Rock seeks partnerships locally through the venues the bands play at, from local bars and theaters to parks and farmers’ markets. “We want to perform locally and give people a variety of experiences performing, including the venue, audience and sound systems.”
Are you ready to jam yet?
“We really strive to foster a music community here,” said Jennifer. “The kid years can be hard, especially for tweens and teens, and we want to give the kids a safe and fun place to be.”
