EMPOWERING WOMEN

BEYOND THE CROWN

Empowering Women, One Story at a Time

This month, it’s all about the ladies! And honestly, we’ll take any excuse to celebrate the women who make life richer, more beautiful, and, let’s be real—way more organized. Whether it’s our moms, wives, daughters, sisters, or friends, the women in our lives shape who we are. And with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms.

As parents to four daughters, this issue hits especially close to home. In fact, our own girls had a blast playing dress-up in a Taylor Swift-inspired fashion shoot that was part of a national effort celebrating individuality and empowerment. Flip to page 14 to see their moment in the spotlight with the “Tween Dream Program.”

Speaking of female empowerment, our cover star this month is former Miss New Jersey USA, Gina Mellish. She’s made the leap from beauty queen to coach, helping young women find confidence and authenticity. Read about her inspiring journey on page 38.

While we’re always big on shopping local, this month is the perfect time to support women-owned businesses in our community. On page 32, meet Lucy and Dana, the powerhouse duo behind House of Blooms, and on page 24, get to know Jess Colon, owner of Hairitage Hair Lounge.

And because you, our readers, have the best taste, this month’s City List features the best local spots for hair salons, boutique shopping, cosmetic surgery, lash studios, and dermatology—all voted on by you! Turn to page 10 to see which businesses earned Readers’ Choice status, and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram (@bridgewater_somerset_hills) for even more updates. We roll out new categories every month!

Before you dive into this issue, we have one request: take a second today to send a text, make a call, or—even better—set up a video chat with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a moment to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they mean to you.

SHINING in the SPOTLIGHT

Photography has the power to tell a story, and for Karen Kwong, it’s a tool for inspiring confidence in young girls. As the owner of Photography by MuSen, LLC, Kwong is on a mission to help girls find their voices through creative expression. One of her recent projects with our Publishers Daughters, a Taylor Swiftinspired photo shoot, was part of a national effort to celebrate individuality and empowerment.

The project, part of the “Tween Dream Program” in collaboration with Fairy Godmother Couture, featured custom-designed dresses inspired by Swift’s various musical eras. The couture dresses traveled among 24 photographers across the country, allowing young girls to participate in a one-of-a-kind photo shoot. Kwong’s session coincided with the final weekend of Swift’s record-breaking tour, adding a serendipitous layer of meaning to the project.

A VISION FOR TWEEN EMPOWERMENT

As a mother of three daughters, Kwong has witnessed firsthand the shifts in confidence that young girls experience as they transition from childhood to adolescence. Research supports her observations, showing that between ages 8 and 14, girls’ confidence levels can drop by as much as 30%.

A Taylor Swift-Inspired Confidence Boost

“This is a pivotal time when girls begin defining their interests, making independent choices, and forming their identities,” Kwong says. “I want them to feel heard, supported, and empowered to express themselves.”

She notes that many young girls participate in activities chosen by their parents, such as dance or piano lessons, but the tween years often mark a turning point. “They start to say, ‘Maybe this isn’t for me,’ and I want them to know that’s okay. They should have the confidence to explore their passions.”

THE POWER OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Initially skeptical about the impact photography could have on self-esteem, Kwong quickly became a believer after witnessing the transformations during her shoots.

“The girls radiated joy and confidence in front of the camera,” she explains. “It was a beautiful reminder that art and photography can play a role in shaping how they see themselves.”

The Taylor Swift-inspired shoot provided a unique opportunity for participants to embody strength, creativity, and individuality—traits the pop icon herself represents. Kwong’s 12 young subjects embraced the experience, many expressing how special and empowered they felt throughout the process.

LOOKING AHEAD

Following the success of this project, Kwong plans to continue her work in confidence-building photography. Another one of her recent shoots focused on a “Wicked” and “Wizard of Oz”-themed shoot, once again merging fashion, fantasy, and self-expression.

“I want to keep creating spaces where girls can shine, explore, and most importantly, believe in themselves,” she shares.

With each click of the shutter, Kwong is doing more than taking pictures—she’s capturing the essence of confidence and empowerment, one girl at a time.

Inspired by the impact of these experiences, Kwong hopes to make this program an annual tradition, giving more girls the opportunity to step in front of the camera and embrace their inner strength year after year.

Flounder, Flavor, and a Little Facebook Detox

Sautéed Flounder with Pine Nut Butter & Spicy Garlic Spinach

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY METROPOLITAN

SEAFOOD & GOURMET

INGREDIENTS

For the Flounder:

• 4 (6-to-8-ounce) flounder fillets (or substitute with red snapper, grouper, or catfish)

• Salt and freshly ground pepper

• ¼ cup all-purpose flour (for dusting)

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 2 tablespoons butter

• ¼ cup pine nuts (or coarsely chopped walnuts)

• Juice of 1 lemon

• 2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped

For the Sautéed Spicy Garlic Spinach:

• 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

• 6 garlic cloves, very thinly sliced

• 2 teaspoons Bomba (Calabrian chili paste)

• 10 ounces fresh baby spinach

• Zest of 1 lemon, finely grated

• Salt and freshly ground pepper

I’m sorry, did you say you have no time to cook... but just spent the last two hours Facebook stalking your high school classmates? Stop scrolling your phone and let’s get in the kitchen to start living.

This delicious recipe comes from Metropolitan Seafood & Gourmet , where fresh, high-quality seafood meets incredible flavors.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook the Flounder:

• Season the fillets with salt and pepper on both sides, then lightly dredge in flour, shaking off excess. • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add olive oil, tilting the pan to coat. • Cook fish for about 3 minutes per side, or until it flakes easily. Transfer to a platter and keep warm.

2. Make the Pine Nut Butter:

• Reduce the skillet heat to medium and add butter.

• Once the butter begins to melt, stir in pine nuts. Cook for 30 to 60 seconds, until butter is melted and nuts are lightly toasted (be careful not to burn the butter). • Add lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper. • Spoon the butter and pine nut mixture over the fish fillets and sprinkle with parsley.

3. Prepare the Sautéed Spicy Garlic Spinach:

• Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. • Add garlic and Bomba paste, stirring for about 30 seconds until fragrant. • Add spinach and toss with tongs until it begins to wilt. • While tossing, add lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Serve & Enjoy:

BREAKING Barriers

TRACY SANDLER ON WOMEN IN SPORTS AND CHANGING THE GAME
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRACY SANDLER
TRACY SANDLER

Tracy Sandler has built a career that seamlessly fuses sports journalism, fandom, and female empowerment. As the founder of Fangirl Sports Network, she has carved out a space in the male-dominated sports industry, proving that women can not only be passionate sports fans but also shape the conversation around the game. While her roots are in Los Angeles and her day-to-day coverage centers on the San Francisco 49ers, her impact extends nationwide—including to the East Coast.

BUILDING A SPORTS NETWORK FOR WOMEN

Sandler, a lifelong sports fan and University of Michigan alum, created Fangirl Sports Network nearly a decade ago with the goal of shifting how sports media speaks to women. "At the time, it felt like female fans were either expected to know nothing or just wear a pink jersey," Sandler recalls. "I love pink and sparkles, but not everyone does. I wanted to create content that truly engaged female fans." Through a mix of game analysis, off-the-field stories, and digital media savvy—including TikTok and meme-driven news—she has built a platform that resonates with a new generation of sports enthusiasts.

SUPER BOWL WEEK

While covering the Super Bowl in New Orleans this year, we had a chance to catch up with Sandler and ask her a few questions that we thought would speak to our female readers. Sandler's presence at Super Bowl LIX was more than just about covering the game—it was a chance to network, engage, and celebrate the evolving landscape of women in sports media. She attended high-profile events, including the Kelce brothers’ party, where Jason Kelce, the heart and soul of the Philadelphia Eagles, made an impression.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Sandler has her eye on several teams, including the Eagles. "The Eagles will continue to be a force to be reckoned with," she predicts. "They have a strong foundation and should remain a major contender in the NFC." Her analysis aligns with the high expectations Philadelphia fans have for their team, especially following seasons of playoff contention.

ADVICE FOR WOMEN CHASING THEIR DREAMS

Sandler’s journey is one of persistence, passion, and adaptability—lessons she hopes will inspire others. "At the end of the day, you just have to start," she advises. "You have to be flexible. When I first started Fangirl Sports Network, it looked very different from what it is now. But had I not been open to change, it wouldn’t have grown the way it has."

“You have to be flexible. When I first started Fangirl Sports Network, it looked very different from what it is now. But had I not been open to change, it wouldn’t have grown the way it has.”
— Tracy Sandler

Beyond Philadelphia, Sandler sees rising threats in the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders, as well as familiar AFC powerhouses like the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. However, she acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the NFL, where injuries and offseason changes can shift the landscape quickly.

As women continue to break barriers in sports media, Sandler stands as proof that determination and vision can turn an idea into a thriving platform. And while she may primarily cover the 49ers, her reach extends far beyond the Bay Area, making an impact on fans from coast to coast—including those donning green in Philly.

With Super Bowl LX set for Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco next year, all eyes will be on how the season unfolds. If Sandler’s predictions hold true, Eagles fans may have plenty to cheer about come February 2026.

How Hairitage Hair Lounge is Changing the Hair Game

Curls, Confidence,

and Community

At Hairitage Hair Lounge, curls aren’t just styled—they’re celebrated. For owner Jessa Colon, every strand tells a story, and she’s on a mission to make sure curly-haired clients leave her salon feeling empowered, educated, and, most importantly, seen.

Born in Puerto Rico and later moving to New Jersey, Colon was surrounded by a variety of hair textures, from sleek and straight to tight coils. However, when she entered the beauty industry 20 years ago, she quickly realized that curly hair wasn’t just underserved—it was misunderstood.

“There were products for thin, fine, straight hair or for thick, tight, coily hair, but nothing in between.” Colon recalls. “I was literally mixing my own leave-in conditioners just to get the right balance for my clients.”

That gap in the industry fueled her passion for textured hair and set her on a path to become a champion for curls. At Hairitage Hair Lounge, she and her team aren’t just cutting and styling hair—they’re educating clients on how to care for and embrace their natural texture.

Redefining the Salon Experience for Curly Hair

Colon remembers her early days as a stylist in Bridgewater, a town where the predominant hair texture was straight, curly hair was often seen as a challenge rather than a feature to be celebrated.

“There was a girl who came into the salon, and I remember all the stylists in the back room groaning because no one wanted to do her hair,” Colon says. “I thought there was some kind of impossible knot waiting for me. But when I saw her, I realized—it was just a curly-haired girl. That was it.”

Colon took her as a client, gave her a proper curly haircut, and showed her how to care for her hair. Word spread quickly, and soon, Colon had built an entire clientele of women with wavy, curly, and coily hair—many of whom had never found a stylist who truly understood their needs.

“Curly hair isn’t difficult—it’s just a different fabric,” Colon says. “It takes a different approach, different techniques, and a different mindset. Once you understand that, it’s not hard at all.”

JESSA’S

TOP FIVE

HAIR TIPS FOR CURLS (AND EVERYONE ELSE!)

1. Plan Your Wash Day Wisely

Curly hair doesn’t need to be washed every day, but when you do wash it, make it count. Colon recommends setting aside enough time for a full wash day—clarifying, conditioning, detangling, and styling—so you get the best results and don’t have to refresh as often.

2. Detangle in the Shower

Brushing curly hair when it’s dry can lead to breakage and frizz. Instead, Colon suggests using a wide-tooth comb or fingers to gently detangle in the shower with plenty of conditioner and water to help loosen knots.

3. Style While Wet

One of the biggest mistakes people make with curly hair is waiting too long to apply styling products. Colon says the best time to style is while hair is soaking wet, using water-soluble products to ensure even distribution and proper hydration. She even recommends using a fog-free mirror in the shower to make the process easier.

4. Rethink Oil

For generations, people have turned to oil as the ultimate cure-all for dry hair, but Colon says that’s a misconception. Oil and water don’t mix, and applying oil to wet hair can actually prevent moisture from penetrating the strands. Instead, use oils sparingly on dry hair for shine, not for hydration.

5. Sleep Smart

Nighttime habits can make or break a good hair day. Colon advises sleeping on a silk pillowcase and wearing a bonnet to protect curls from friction, frizz, and tangles. “Straight-haired girls should try it too,” she adds. “You wake up with smoother, shinier hair, and your blowout lasts longer.”

MORE THAN JUST A SALON

Beyond styling, Hairitage Hair Lounge is on a mission to reshape the way people see and care for curly hair. Colon and her team undergo extensive training, earning certifications in specialized curl techniques, and even teaching classes to help educate other stylists on how to work with textured hair.

“We don’t exclude anyone, but we want people with curls to know this is a place where they are understood and included,” Colon says. “For too long, curly hair was treated as a problem. We’re here to change that.”

Hairitage Hair Lounge isn’t just giving people great hair—it’s giving them the confidence to embrace their natural beauty. And for Jessa Colon, that’s the real reward.

life in the Fast Lane

Joe Saling’s journey into the world of competitive cycling began in 1953 with a rainy afternoon in Somerville. Drawn by the excitement of the annual Tour of Somerville and the promise of a new Chevrolet for the winner, a teenage Saling found himself captivated by the sport. By 1956, he had stepped into a bike shop, eager to race. A used frame and a job offer later, his life’s path was set.

Saling’s passion for cycling turned into an enduring career as both a competitor and an announcer. He spent decades behind the microphone at the Tour of Somerville, narrating the country’s oldest major bicycle race to thousands of spectators. His voice became synonymous with the event, guiding fans through the nuances of the sport. But in 2017,

for the first time in his career, he was speechless. His grandson, Noah Granigan, had just won the race—after returning from an eight-day, 100-mile-per-day stage race in Ireland the night before.

“The perfect finish,” Saling recalls.

While the Tour of Somerville has evolved over the years—shifting courses, prize lists, and attendance—it remains, in Saling’s eyes, the most important one-day race in the country. He has witnessed records shatter, speeds increase, and the sport grow in ways unimaginable when he first picked up a bike. Yet, he acknowledges the shift in public interest, as media coverage has declined and the event faces competition from countless modern distractions.

Still, Saling’s love for cycling has never wavered. At 85, he continues to ride every day the weather allows, proving that passion defies age. In December, he won the 85-89 National Cyclocross Championship, his 24th national title. He thrives on competition, embracing the reality that while his age group grows smaller, his determination remains boundless.

To aspiring cyclists, Saling offers a dose of reality and encouragement. “This is a hard sport, a relatively expensive one, but it will bring you so much,” he says. His advice? Find a club, learn the fundamentals, and recognize that the Tour of Somerville is just a small part of a much larger cycling world.

Beyond the race itself, the Tour of Somerville holds deeper significance. The event was first held in 1940, 1941, and 1942, but World War II led to its discontinuation until 1947, when it was renamed the Kugler-Anderson Memorial. Furman Kugler who won the first two races and Carl Anderson the third winner of the race—tragically lost their lives as a result of the war. This history makes its Memorial Day tradition especially poignant. Saling hopes the race continues for years to come, with greater recognition from USA Cycling for its historical importance.

After nearly 70 years in the sport, his enthusiasm remains as strong as ever. “Watch a race like Somerville,” he urges. “It will be the quickest two hours of your life.”

And for Joe Saling, a lifetime on two wheels has gone by just as fast.

From Wildflowers to Florals

On a warm summer afternoon, Lucy Sandler was captivated by the beauty of nature as she picked wildflowers for her mother. The colors and textures of the blooms left a lasting impression on her young heart. Dana Kane, meanwhile, found herself more focused on searching for four-leaf clovers and dandelions in the outfield during softball games rather than the game itself. These small moments sparked a lifelong love for floristry, a passion that would later evolve into something much more—an art form that would allow them to touch the lives of others.

Today, that passion has blossomed into House of Blooms, a women-owned floral business that has captured the hearts of its clients. Through every arrangement, Lucy and Dana combine their love for nature with their artistic talents, creating designs that feel personal, intimate, and full of life.

HOW HOUSE OF BLOOMS BLOSSOMED INTO A BUSINESS OF EMPOWERMENT AND ART

“THOSE EARLY EXPERIENCES TAUGHT US TO NOTICE THE BEAUTY IN EVEN THE SIMPLEST THINGS, AND THAT FASCINATION
GREW INTO A PASSION WE NOW SHARE THROUGH OUR FLORAL DESIGNS AT HOUSE OF BLOOMS.” - LUCY SANDLER

THE SEED OF PASSION: FROM CHILDHOOD MEMORIES TO FLORISTRY

Lucy and Dana trace their love for floristry back to their childhoods. These small moments of connection with nature laid the foundation for their shared passion. Lucy recalls, “Those early experiences taught us to notice the beauty in even the simplest things, and that fascination grew into a passion we now share through our floral designs at House of Blooms.”

Their bond, founded in childhood memories of wildflowers and clovers, led them to create floral arrangements that celebrate both nature and personal style.

A FLORAL REPRESENTATION OF PERSONAL STYLE

For Lucy, the perfect floral arrangement embraces nature’s wild beauty, celebrating spontaneity and organic designs. She loves wildflowers for their unique textures and untamed aesthetic. Dana, on the other hand, prefers structured arrangements that are thoughtfully balanced. Her designs evoke emotion and connection through careful composition. Together, their styles merge seamlessly, creating arrangements that are both artfully curated and naturally effortless, capturing the essence of each client’s vision.

EMPOWERMENT IN BUSINESS: A FOUNDATION OF STRENGTH AND CREATIVITY

At the heart of House of Blooms lies empowerment. As a women-owned business, Lucy and Dana prioritize creativity, collaboration, and leadership. “Empowerment means having the confidence to pursue our passions and the strength to lift others along the way,” says Dana.

They believe in inspiring other women to chase their dreams fearlessly. “We want to create a space where women feel encouraged to take risks and follow their visions,” Lucy adds. Through their work, they aim to foster a sense of community and encourage others to pursue their passions.

MOMENTS OF MILESTONES AND MEMORIES

Looking back on their journey, one of the most memorable moments was their first Mother’s Day as business partners. After a week of long hours and hard work, they celebrated with a glass of champagne, feeling immense pride in what they had accomplished together.

CONTINUED >

Dana Kane
Lucy Sandler

This moment solidified their partnership, reminding them of the power of collaboration and the joy of building something meaningful together.

THE FLOWER THAT REPRESENTS THEIR LIVES

Flowers hold personal significance for both Lucy and Dana, and each has a bloom that symbolizes their journey. For Lucy, the Phalaenopsis Orchid represents resilience, elegance, and the constant pursuit of beauty. It mirrors her approach to floristry—graceful and ever-growing. Dana, however, identifies with the Garden Rose, a symbol of timeless beauty and connection. Its classic design and rich fragrance reflect her ability to create lasting, meaningful relationships through her work.

FLORAL DESIGN: A CREATIVE PROCESS THAT NEVER STOPS

Staying inspired is essential in an industry that demands constant creativity. Lucy draws inspiration from nature, whether through quiet walks or observing flowers in their natural environment. Dana finds inspiration in various art forms, from visiting museums to experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. Collaboration also plays a key role in keeping their creative energy alive. “When we collaborate, we remind ourselves why House of Blooms was created. It’s that balance of personal creativity and shared passion that keeps us motivated,” says Dana.

CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY: A FLORAL LOVE LETTER

When asked about the best flowers to give on Mother’s Day, Lucy and Dana recommend tulips, lilacs, and primroses. Tulips represent perfect love, lilacs evoke the joy of motherhood with their fragrance, and primroses symbolize new beginnings, making them perfect for celebrating mothers.

Roses, especially soft pink and white roses, represent a mother’s love for both. “Pink roses symbolize admiration and gratitude, while white roses embody purity and the unconditional love mothers give,” Dana explains. For Lucy and Dana, roses are the perfect flower to express the profound bond between mother and child.

NEW TRENDS IN FLORAL DESIGN FOR MOTHER’S DAY

This Mother’s Day, Lucy and Dana are embracing the “Modern Meadow” trend, which celebrates whimsy, texture, and unexpected compositions. “It’s a free-flowing design that feels vibrant and alive,” says Lucy. It’s the perfect way to honor the creativity and spontaneity mothers inspire.

For last-minute shoppers, they suggest the Designer’s Choice arrangement. “It’s a timeless gift,” says Dana. “We select the freshest blooms and craft something bespoke for every recipient.”

THE LEGACY OF HOUSE OF BLOOMS

Through House of Blooms, Lucy and Dana have not only created beautiful floral designs but also built a business grounded in creativity, empowerment, and connection. As they celebrate Mother’s Day, they remind us of the women who, like them, bring beauty into the world and make it bloom.

Crowning Confidence

GINA MELLISH'S MISSION IS EMPOWERING WOMEN TO FIND THEIR VOICE—ON AND OFF THE STAGE

Gina Mellish, crowned Miss New Jersey USA in 2020, didn’t have the typical pageant queen upbringing. In fact, she grew up as a self-described tomboy in Oceanport, NJ, and had no idea what the world of pageantry even looked like. Fast forward to today, and Mellish is not only a former titleholder but also an inspirational coach who has helped young women across the country achieve their pageant dreams.

In a candid interview, Mellish opened up about her unlikely journey to becoming Miss New Jersey and how she now works full-time as a coach, using her experiences to guide the next generation of pageant competitors.

FROM TOMBOY TO BEAUTY QUEEN

The spark for Mellish's pageant career came during her time at Red Bank Catholic High School. As a sophomore, she was inspired by her senior volleyball captain, Christina Thompson, who had just won Miss New Jersey Teen USA. “She was so kind, smart, and hardworking. I thought, ‘I want to be like her,’” Mellish recalls.

That admiration led Mellish to her first pageant, where she placed third runner-up. But instead of walking away, she dove deeper, and the following year, she won Miss New Jersey Teen USA. “That’s when my parents became pageant parents,” she laughs, recalling how they got fully involved in the experience.

Mellish competed in Miss Teen USA, made lifelong friends, and, after graduating from Marist College, decided to return to the pageant world. “I thought maybe it would take a few years to win Miss New Jersey USA,” she says. “But I ended up winning on my first try. And I wasn’t even old enough to have a martini to celebrate!"

THE ROAD TO MISS USA AND TOP 10 GLORY

Mellish’s journey took an unexpected turn when the world shut down due to the pandemic in 2020. Crowned Miss New Jersey USA in November 2019, she was ready to compete in Miss USA that following year—but the world had other plans.

As the pandemic forced a postponement of the competition, Mellish had to train in the comfort of her own home.

“I was juggling school, interning at Giorgio Armani, and preparing for Miss USA all at once,” she says. “But when we were sent home, it was a hard time for many, but it gave me the chance to focus.” That focus paid off, as Mellish placed in the top 10 at Miss USA in 2020, a feat she still feels proud of today.

FINDING PURPOSE BEYOND THE GLITZ

Mellish's time as Miss New Jersey USA was about more than just looking pretty in a crown. As she competed at Miss USA, she used her platform to raise awareness around healthy relationships, working closely with the organization One Love. “I had been in an abusive relationship when I was 16, and competing again gave me a chance to speak out and use my voice for something that mattered,” she shares.

Her message resonated deeply with others, as Mellish’s vulnerability and courage in sharing her story helped countless people navigate their own struggles. “I wanted to leave a legacy that wasn’t just about the crown and the glitz,” she notes. “It was about using my story to help others.”

A NEW CHAPTER: COACHING THE NEXT GENERATION

After her reign, Mellish transitioned into coaching, and now she helps young women—both teens and adults—navigate their own pageant journeys. “My biggest job as a coach is to help girls find who they are,” she says. “I want them to feel beautiful, not just in the pageant world, but in their everyday lives.”

She works with women from ages 14 to 35, teaching them everything from interview prep to personal branding. “We talk about current events, styling, walking, and image consulting. But more than anything, I want them to leave with tools they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” she explains.

Mellish has coached multiple pageant queens, including several Miss New Jersey Teen USA winners. “It’s incredible to think that my first national client won Miss Teen USA, and now I’ve had clients go on to win Miss Universe!” she says, looking back on her unexpected success as a coach.

But for Mellish, it’s not about the trophies. It’s about the people. “I’m just the catalyst between them and their dreams. My goal is to help women feel beautiful and empowered, no matter what stage they’re at in life.”

As Mellish reflects on her coaching career, she remains grateful for the opportunities pageantry has given her—and the chance to help others. “I’ve had some amazing moments, like coaching a Miss Teen USA and a Miss Universe,” she says. “But I’d love to have a Miss USA in my future. That’s the last piece of the puzzle for me.”

Above all, Mellish’s message for young girls and women who want to step into the pageant world is simple: take risks and have fun. “If I can do it, you can do it,” she shares with a smile. “Don’t be afraid to fail. You never know what can happen unless you try.”

Whether you’re a young girl dreaming of a crown or a woman looking for confidence and guidance, Gina Mellish is here to help you shine. Follow her on instagram  @theginamellish or visit her website ginamellishconsulting.com for more inspiration.
