Dear Bridgewater,
Happy February! It’s the month when ambitious New Year’s resolutions make way for heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. While it’s the shortest month, February certainly doesn’t hold back—it’s filled with love, cozy moments, and brisk reminders that winter is still with us.
This is our Love Local issue, and we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. Around here, “love local” isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s a lifestyle. Supporting local businesses strengthens our neighborhoods and keeps our favorite spots thriving. It’s about ensuring the places we recommend to friends and family continue to shine. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the people and places that make Bridgewater extraordinary.
We’re thrilled to unveil our February City List feature on page 14. You nominated your favorite local fine dining restaurants, florists, jewelers, day spas, and real estate agents. The results are in, and the businesses topping each category have earned the title of Readers’ Choice. Be sure to follow us on Instagram—@bridgewater_somerset_hills—to vote for future categories and continue celebrating all things local.
Looking to sweeten Valentine’s Day? Check out the Berry Sweet Love Trifle recipe on page 32. With layers of berries, cream, and sponge cake, it’s a dessert perfect for sharing—or enjoying solo (no judgment here!).
And speaking of love, we’re proud to celebrate one of our own. Congratulations to Jaclynn Hurley, recently named a 2024 Exemplary Educator by the New Jersey Department of Education. Mrs. Hurley, your dedication to shaping young minds inspires us all. Learn more about her on page 40.
Here’s to February: a month of love, connection, and celebrating the local businesses and people that make Bridgewater so special. Let’s keep lifting each other up, one small business and heartfelt moment at a time.
With love (and maybe a trifle or two),

Carly Heitlinger-Riordan and her Family.
Local blogger blends life, style, and a love for small-town connections.
Carly Heitlinger-Riordan has built a vibrant platform of inspiration through her blog, CARLY. What began in 2008 as a personal outlet during her freshman year at Georgetown University has blossomed into a trusted lifestyle resource for women navigating the many stages of life. From parenting tips to style advice, Riordan uses her blog and social media platforms to share candid reflections, relatable anecdotes, and timeless inspiration.
“I started my blog as a way to express myself,” Riordan recalls. “It was the perfect creative outlet during a tough transition, and over time, it evolved into something much bigger—a reflection of my life and the community around me.”
One post, written during her senior year of college, captures her journey: she vented about the pressures of looming adulthood, a moment that resonated with many readers and exemplified her raw, relatable voice.
Originally intended as a diary-like space, CARLY struck a chord with readers who saw themselves in Riordan’s words. Her early posts detailed her life as a college student-athlete, sharing her struggles and triumphs alongside what she was wearing, reading, or exploring. As her life evolved, so did her blog.
Now based in Madison, New Jersey, Riordan balances life as a mom to two sons, wife, and entrepreneur. Having grown up in Florida and later lived in Connecticut and New York, Riordan says she has embraced her life in New Jersey.
“I never envisioned myself living here, but I truly couldn’t love it more,” she says. “Madison is such a wonderful place to raise kids. The sense of community and the incredible women I’ve met have made it feel like home.”
Her connection to her community shines through in her content, which often highlights the joys of small-town living. Whether she’s sharing her favorite local spots, documenting her sons’ adventures, or hosting events with fellow moms, her love for New Jersey is evident.

As a mother and business owner, Riordan emphasizes the importance of hobbies. “Hobbies help us step away from the noise,” she explains. “They offer a creative outlet that’s not tied to work or external expectations. For me, needlepoint has been a way to relax and create something tangible with my hands.”
Her love for needlepoint began before the pandemic and has since become a central part of her life, inspiring others to explore hobbies of their own. “There’s something special about making something with your hands,” she reflects. “It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to bring you joy.”
Her passion for hobbies also extends to her book club, which she started as a separate Instagram channel. “Books were my company during some challenging times,” she shares. “Now, I use my book-focused Instagram to connect with readers and authors. It’s amazing to see how Bookstagram and BookTok are changing the publishing world.”
Riordan’s authenticity resonates with her audience as she navigates motherhood with refreshing honesty. “You can be overwhelmed as a mom and still focus on the positives,” she says. “It’s about finding joy in the chaos and creating magical moments without overcomplicating things.”
She is mindful of protecting her children’s privacy while sharing snippets of their lives. “I’m careful about what I post,” she explains. “I want my kids to be part of my story without losing their sense of self or safety. It’s a balance I think about every day.”
Her approach to motherhood is grounded in simplicity and connection. “You don’t have to throw extravagant parties or have a

picture-perfect home,” she says. “What matters most are the little moments and the effort to be present.”
Through her blog and her book, Business Minded , Riordan champions female entrepreneurship and personal growth. She acknowledges the challenges she has faced along the way, such as building a sustainable brand in an ever-changing digital landscape. Her advice? “Success comes from balance,” she notes. “It’s not about perfection—it’s about finding what works for you.”
Her platform continues to evolve, offering insights into everything from home decor to needlepoint projects. Her classic style, often punctuated with bows, monograms, and timeless silhouettes, adds a signature touch to her posts.
As she continues to grow her platform, Riordan remains committed to inspiring her readers to create a life they love. Whether sharing a cozy needlepoint project, a thoughtful book review, or a heartfelt parenting story, she reminds her audience to find beauty in the everyday.
With her signature classic style, creative ingenuity, and commitment to authenticity, Carly Heitlinger-Riordan proves that life’s best moments are found in the little things.

Blue Mass Celebrated at Saint James Church in Basking Ridge
On Wednesday, November 27, 2024, Saint James School in Bernards Township held its annual Blue Mass to honor and pray for local police officers from the township and surrounding areas. The event brought together students, teachers, staff, administrators, parents, police department representatives, and relatives of students who serve in law enforcement.
The Mass was celebrated by Reverend Monsignor Sylvester J. Cronin and Deacon Robert A. Barry. During his homily, Monsignor Cronin highlighted the selfless nature of police work, describing it as a vocation. “When these men and women put on their uniform to serve our communities, they are a target,” he said. Monsignor Cronin also emphasized the importance of gratitude, reminding the congregation that “we should be giving thanks every day, not just on Thanksgiving, for what these men and women do for our local communities.”
After the Mass, police officers in attendance were honored in front of the assembled students, teachers, staff, and parents. Monsignor Cronin thanked the officers again and offered words of encouragement, saying, “When your day is going tough, and nothing seems to be going right, always know that our school and students are behind you, praying for your safety.”
The officers received a standing ovation as the school choir led everyone in a heartfelt rendition of “God Bless America.” The Saint James School community expressed its deep appreciation for those who serve and protect local communities, towns, and the state.
Saint James School is a private Catholic institution serving students from pre-K through eighth grade. As a ministry of the Church of Saint James and part of the Metuchen Diocesan educational system, its mission is to foster Christcentered academic excellence. The school was recognized as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School, reflecting its dedication to creating a nurturing environment grounded in faith, love, and learning.

LOCAL ABA THERAPY CENTER FOCUSES ON PERSONALIZED CARE, COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND ADVOCACY FOR INCLUSION.
Success on the Spectrum (SOS) Bridgewater is making significant strides in providing high-quality Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for children with autism. The center focuses on personalized care, fostering a supportive, family-like atmosphere for both staff and clients.
Led by CEO Mahvish Gilani, SOS Bridgewater emphasizes individualized treatment programs tailored to each child’s unique needs. “Our approach starts with a detailed assessment by a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA),” Gilani says. “This allows us to identify core deficits and create customized programs for each child.”
Drawing from personal experience and a strong sense of community, Gilani guides the clinic’s mission. “We’re not just running a clinic; we’re building a family,” she says. Staff and clients frequently express gratitude for the nurturing environment, which Gilani believes sets SOS Bridgewater apart from larger clinics.
“Our goal is to advocate for children to receive the oneon-one support they need in inclusive environments.”
— Mahvish Gilani
At SOS Bridgewater, children receive one-on-one support from Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) during their sessions. For families with school-age children, the clinic offers after-school programs, while younger children benefit from full-day services. This adaptability ensures that all children receive the time and care they need to thrive.
In addition to therapy, SOS Bridgewater hosts regular parent training sessions to extend therapeutic strategies into
the home. “It’s a partnership,” Gilani says. “We maintain open communication with families, sharing progress and addressing challenges together to ensure consistency in care.”
Despite its successes, SOS Bridgewater faces challenges common in the ABA industry, including navigating insurance constraints and addressing gaps in school resources. “Some school districts claim to offer support, but the reality often falls
short,” Gilani notes. “Our goal is to advocate for children to receive the one-on-one support they need in inclusive environments.”
To further support families, SOS Bridgewater plans to launch parent support groups in the coming year. “A diagnosis can feel overwhelming,” Gilani says. “We want to create a community where families can share experiences and resources.”
With 15 children currently enrolled and a dedicated staff of more than 20, SOS Bridgewater is exploring ways to expand its capacity. The clinic’s ultimate vision includes not only helping children with autism but also educating the broader community about inclusion. “The focus needs to be on equipping neurotypicals with the tools to embrace diversity,” Gilani says. “Empowering communities with awareness and empathy can create transformative change.”

The Ultimate Valentine’s Day
Trifle
Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love, and what better way to show someone you care than with a dessert that’s as sweet as they are? This Berry Sweet Love Trifle is a delightful mix of juicy berries, fluffy cream, and soft sponge cake—perfect for sharing with your special someone or treating yourself!
• 1 pound fresh strawberries, sliced
• 1 pound fresh raspberries
• 1 package of vanilla sponge cake (or ladyfingers)
• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
• 8 oz cream cheese, softened
• 1/2 cup powdered sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup raspberry jam or preserves
• Fresh mint for garnish (optional)
1. Prepare the Cream Layer: In a large mixing bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture until combined, creating a light and fluffy cream layer. 2. Assemble the Trifle: In a trifle dish or large glass bowl, start by layering pieces of vanilla sponge cake (or ladyfingers) at the bottom. Drizzle a small amount of raspberry jam over the cake for extra flavor and sweetness. 3. Layer the Berries: Add a generous handful of sliced strawberries and raspberries on top of the cake layer. You can arrange them however you like to create a colorful contrast. 4. Add the Cream: Spoon a thick layer of the cream mixture over the berries, smoothing it out with a spatula. Repeat the layers (cake, jam, berries, cream) until you’ve filled the dish. 5. Top it Off: Finish with a final layer of berries and a light dusting of powdered sugar. For an extra touch, add a few fresh mint leaves to the top. 6. Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2-3 hours to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve chilled and enjoy this sweet, fruity treat perfect for sharing with your Valentine.

HOW REACTIVATION MASSAGE EMPOWERS CLIENTS TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR WELL-BEING
Inside the tranquil setting of Reactivation Massage, a team of highly skilled therapists is transforming how clients approach self-care and recovery. Led by Holly Lange, along with Rebecca Place, Patricia Vreeland, Leona Kardux, and Tammy Pica-Dolan, the studio blends expertise in medical massage, neuromuscular therapy, wellness coaching, and cutting-edge therapies to help clients regain balance and control in their lives. "What sets us apart is our focus on holistic therapy and teamwork," Place shares. "Our goal is to help clients avoid surgical and pharmaceutical interventions by teaching them that they have more control over their well-being than they think." Place, one of fewer than 60 certified medical massage practitioners in the U.S., uses her distinction to highlight the technical and science-backed nature of her work.
Medical massage targets full-blown pathologies with precision and is supported by proven research, offering a vital resource for clients seeking alternatives to traditional interventions. Vreeland, specializing in trauma recovery, blends somatic mindfulness with a deeply personalized approach. "Massage is not just about the physical aspect-it's emotional and energetic as well," she explains. "We connect with our clients, truly listen, and guide them toward feeling better." Kardux, an Integrated Energy Therapist and named among the top 30 Master Instructors in 2013, integrates energy work to help clients achieve emotional and physical balance. Her approach promotes overall wellness by addressing the mind-body connection through proven energy techniques. Pica-Dolan, a Certified Cryoskin Technician and ACE Certified Health & Wellness Coach, brings her expertise in non-invasive fat reduction and wellness coaching. "Combining Cryoskin therapy with a holistic wellness approach allows clients to see dramatic physical results while supporting their overall health journey," Pica-Dolan says. The therapists work collaboratively, often referring clients to one another to ensure personalized care. This teamwork amplifies the effectiveness of their treatments and reinforces their mission of holistic recovery. Empowering Clients Beyond the Studio Education plays a key role in the studio's approach. "We encourage practices like stretching, Epsom salt baths, and vagus nerve reset techniques," Lange explains. "These tools help clients extend the benefits of their massage sessions and stay in tune with their bodies." Manual lymphatic drainage, a specialized therapy offered by Place, further exemplifies the studio's technical focus. "It is designed to filter through the body's waste and strengthen the immune system, offering relief and overall improved health," she says. Rooted in Community Founded by Lange, Reactivation Massage has grown from a single room in a yoga studio to a thriving multi-room practice in Bridgewater. Despite the expansion, the studio remains committed to its sense of community. "Our motto is simple: 'Working together so YOU can live your life, not limit it,'" Lange says. "That applies to our clients and our team. We support one another every step of the way." With a focus on expert care, collaboration, and education, Reactivation Massage empowers clients to take control of their health and well-being.

Bridgewater-Raritan Alumna Recognized Statewide for Dedication and Leadership in Education
The State of New Jersey has officially recognized what the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District has long known: Jaclynn Hurley is an exceptional educator. A year after being honored locally, Jaclynn Hurley, a fifth-grade math, science, and social studies teacher at Eisenhower Intermediate School, has been named a 2024 Exemplary Educator by the New Jersey Department of Education.
The Bridgewater-Raritan Regional Board of Education celebrated her achievement on Tuesday, Dec. 10, during a regular meeting where Superintendent Bob Beers presented her with the state’s Exemplary Educator certificate. “Congratulations on winning another award. You are an excellent representative of the district,” Superintendent Beers said.
Mrs. Hurley expressed her gratitude, saying, “This is extremely gratifying to see the work that I do acknowledged and to witness each student achieve success.”
The Exemplary Educator Program identifies outstanding educators across the state for special recognition. This year, Mrs. Hurley was one of 160 honorees selected. Dr. Laura Bassett, Eisenhower’s principal, nominated Mrs. Hurley earlier in the year,
building on her prior recognition as the school’s Governor’s Educator of the Year for 2023-2024.
“I am so proud of Mrs. Hurley for this state-wide recognition,” Dr. Bassett said. “She exemplifies leadership and dedication, making a positive difference in our school community.”
Mrs. Hurley’s ties to the district make this honor especially meaningful. A proud alumna, she attended John F. Kennedy Primary School, Van Holten Primary School, Eisenhower, Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School, and Bridgewater-Raritan High School, graduating in 2001. After earning her degree at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, she returned to teach in the very district that shaped her.
“I always wanted to come back to BridgewaterRaritan,” she said. Remarkably, she even taught in Room 206, where she studied language arts as a sixth-grade student.
Dr. Bassett concluded, “Jackie is a leader in our school and exemplifies what it means to SOAR at Eisenhower.”
