ABBY CLARK’S JOURNEY INSPIRES GROWTH

Invest in What Truly Matters
Happy April, Bridgewater!
Although winter was relatively mild this year—a trend over the past few years—we’re certainly catching the spring fever. As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” Maybe we even need to invest in a little extra rain to bring out the beauty of May!

This month, our focus is on investing in every part of your life. Investment means devoting time, energy, effort, or finances to achieve worthwhile results— whether it’s supporting our local community, enriching our relationships, securing our financial future, or boosting our health.
As parents to four daughters, we believe in investing in the future. After all, who else will take care of us when we’re old? On page 30, learn how Far Hills County Day School is investing in tomorrow’s leaders.
We’re also celebrating rising stars. On page 24, we highlight the Somerset County Business Partnerships Top 40 Under 40. Our very own Publication Director, Carly Mac Manus, earned this honor this year—and she’s truly a rising star! (Don’t worry, we’re keeping her on our team.)
Your home is your biggest asset, so investing in its upkeep is key. On page 34, we feature Steve Dipollina, owner of Floor Coverings International of Somerset, who shows how upgrading your floors can transform your space.
Health is another important investment—both mental and physical. On the cover, Abby Clark, an eight-season contestant on American Ninja Warrior, shares her inspiring journey and the benefits of obstacle course competition. Learn more about her on page 18.
We’re also excited to share this month’s City List, where you voted for your favorite local businesses in categories like financial advisor, bank, law firm, co-working space, and auto dealership. SPRING BLOSSOM FIZZ
Celebrate the arrival of spring with a refreshing Spring Blossom Fizz! This cocktail blends floral gin, elderflower liqueur, and citrus for a light, bubbly drink that’s perfect for April’s warmer days. Cheers!

Ingredients:
• 1.5 oz Gin (a floral gin like Hendrick’s works great) • 0.75 oz Elderflower liqueur (St-Germain is a popular choice)
• 0.5 oz Fresh lemon juice
• 0.25 oz Simple syrup (optional, depending on sweetness preference)
• Sparkling water or club soda
• A few dashes of bitters (orange bitters works well)
• Edible flowers or lemon wheel for garnish (optional
Optional Variation: For a slightly different twist, you can add a splash of grapefruit juice instead of the simple syrup for a citrusy bitterness.
Directions:
1. Shake the base: In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and simple syrup (if using). Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.
2. Strain: Strain the mixture into a tall glass filled with ice.
3. Top with bubbles: Slowly pour in sparkling water or club soda to your liking—about 2-3 oz, depending on how fizzy you want it.
4. Add bitters: Add a couple of dashes of orange bitters on top for a bit of complexity.
5. Garnish: Garnish with an edible flower (like a pansy or a small violet) or an orange/lemon wheel to bring a pop of color.

BUILDING STRENGTH AND OVERCOMING OBSTACLES
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL LAGO AND ABBY CLARK
ABBY CLARK’S “AMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR” STORY
Abby Clark
Bedminster resident, Abby Clark, had just graduated from Springfield College in Massachusetts when her athletic passion—gymnastics—came to an end.
“YOU
about a Ninja Warrior/Obstacle Course competition in Brooklyn from a friend. With “zero experience,” they signed up, and although Clark said she failed — “I fell on obstacles!” — she was hooked.
LEARN HOW TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES, SET GOALS, PUSH PAST FAILURE AND JUMP BACK.” - ABBY CLARK
She had been a gymnast for two decades, finishing her last four years competing collegiately and winning the 2015 National Championship on the balance beam. She also competed in track as a hurdler and sprinter for 12 years, finishing her college career on Springfield’s outdoor track team.
However, when Clark earned her degree in rehabilitation and disability studies with a minor in psychology and received her diploma, everything just stopped. “Unless you are competing in the Olympics, once you graduate college, your gymnastics career is over,” she says.
Along with her now-fiancé, Joe Capo, whom she met on the Springfield gymnastics team, Clark wondered: How can we keep this athletic momentum going?
They began running and working out to stay in shape, but they missed the competitive aspect. Then, they learned
The couple registered for more, taking advantage of the training component that preceded each competition. Each time, they got stronger, and their reflexes sharpened.
Little did they know that Ninja Warrior soon would become their way of life — and catapult Clark to the national stage.
The couple had been competing for only a few months when, in 2017, they decided to apply to compete on an upcoming season of American Ninja Warrior. “Joe didn’t get a call back, but I ended up on the show that season,” she says. “I was extremely new to it and had no idea what to expect,” she says. “My first season was Season 9. It was the city qualifiers and filmed in Cleveland overnight. There were about 100 competitors, and they only air about 30. I fell on an early obstacle and did not qualify.”

However, Clark’s story began to change drastically the following season. In Season 10, Clark not only completed the course but also became one of the few competitors to ring the buzzer, marking her very first buzzer on the show. This was her breakthrough moment in the sport, qualifying her for her first city finals. She moved on to the Las Vegas National Finals, her ultimate goal, solidifying her status as a serious contender in the world of Ninja Warrior.
"I definitely kicked it into high gear in terms of training — mentally and physically," she says. "I’ve hit buzzers and qualifiers, and I’ve moved on to Vegas finals four times."
The show films outdoors, in all weather, and competitors do not know the obstacles prior to arriving. “We show up in the late afternoon or evening and are shown demonstrations of how to do each obstacle. They’ll say, ‘Here’s Obstacle One. These are your rules: You have to do this; you can’t do that.’ When you step up to compete, it’s your first time touching those obstacles,” she explains. “It challenges me personally, because as a gymnast and track athlete, you know exactly what you’re doing down to the millisecond. In Ninja, you don’t know what’s coming at you. You have to be flexible mentally and adjust and adapt within a split second.”
Clark has competed in eight seasons of American Ninja Warrior—one of the most veteran competitors on the show— and competed as a Las Vegas National Finalist in Seasons 10, 14, and 16. She also competes for Team DGS Ninja in the Elite Division of the World Ninja League, winning World’s Strongest Ninja in back-toback seasons.
“IT’S
US AGAINST
THE COURSE, NOT US AGAINST EACH OTHER.” - ABBY CLARK
Now, Clark and Capo are teaching their skills to the next generation of Ninja Warriors at Nex Level Ninja, in Flemington, which they opened in 2021. The obstacle gym, co-owned with partners Brayden Provan, Hunter Murphy, and Kelly Denti, is designed for children aged 5 to adults, offering structured recreational classes, open gym hours during which kids can play, advanced classes, and competitive teams, which start at age 6. They also host birthday parties and offer summer and holiday break camps. “It’s fun for everyone, no matter their ability,” she shares.
Leveraging Clark’s prior experience working with people with disabilities at a school in Manhattan, Nex Level Ninja offers programs for children and adults with special needs. “No matter the level you are at, you can reap the benefits,” she notes.
In addition to physical benefits like improved strength, balance, coordination, agility, and body awareness, there are mental benefits to obstacle course competition. “You learn how to overcome obstacles, set goals, push past failure, and jump back,” she says, adding that the environment is supportive. “It’s us against the course, not us against each other.”
The key is fun. “This is a different approach to fitness,” Clark says. “You don’t realize you’re working out. This is essentially a big playground.”

INVESTING IN TOMORROW'S LEADERS

Investing in the next generation of learners is one of the most important initiatives communities can focus on. Somerset Hills City Lifestyle spoke with Georgia Zaiser, Head of School at Far Hills Country Day School, about how to nurture children's growth, inspire lifelong learning, and shape future leaders.
AS A PROFESSIONAL EDUCATOR, HOW DO YOU BELIEVE CHILDREN LEARN BEST?
Children learn best through experience. That’s why we prioritize STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics—beginning at an early age. STEAM fosters hands-on, experiential learning that extends beyond traditional classroom boundaries. By actively engaging in real-world applications, students develop confidence in navigating an increasingly digital world. This approach deepens comprehension, encourages collaboration in
A Conversation

small groups, and helps students see the tangible value of their efforts.
HOW HAVE YOU INVESTED IN THIS TYPE OF EDUCATION?
We raised $1.2 million to support a STEAM curriculum across all grade levels and create the Learning Commons, a state-of-the-art technology space for all students, faculty, and staff.
Beyond the classroom, our 54-acre campus provides countless opportunities for hands-on learning. In today’s digital age, where instant gratification is the norm, incorporating tactile experiences is more important than ever. For example, our seventh-grade science students don’t just read about organisms and biomes—they collect water samples from our campus pond and analyze them under a microscope. In social studies, instead of simply studying a map, students build one from clay, reinforcing geography in a tangible way.
with Georgia Zaiser, Head of School at Far Hills Country Day School
Traditional skills like memorization, studying, and note-taking remain essential, but when paired with experiential learning, concepts come to life in ways that feel natural and engaging—sometimes without students even realizing how much they’re learning.
HOW CAN ADULTS INVEST IN CHILDREN’S EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE?
Individualized attention is essential. At Far Hills, our intentionally small class sizes allow teachers to form meaningful connections with each student, fostering a deep understanding of their unique strengths, challenges, and emotional needs. While academic excellence is at the core of our mission, we take a holistic approach—nurturing intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Through character education, leadership opportunities, and a supportive community, we empower students to develop self-awareness, resilience, and empathy—critical skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
HOW CAN PARENTS INVEST IN THEIR CHILDREN’S DEVELOPMENT?
For younger children, I encourage parents to minimize screen time and prioritize outdoor and unstructured play. Free play fosters creativity, problem-solving, and adaptability—skills that can be stifled when every moment is scheduled. Overloading children with structured activities can hinder their ability to navigate unscripted situations, build resilience, and develop critical thinking
In my eighth-grade wellness class, I remind students that human beings are imperfect. When parents expect perfection, they risk creating anxiety rather than confidence. Instead, they can focus on our school’s five pillars—kindness, responsibility, honesty, leadership, and respect—as guiding principles. Getting involved in the school community through volunteering, joining committees, or attending events also strengthens a child’s sense of belonging.
I love seeing parents on campus—that’s what makes a school a true family. It’s one of the reasons I was drawn to
Far Hills Country Day School, not only as an educator but as a parent. Both of my sons attended from age 3 through eighth grade, so I experienced firsthand the impact of this community for 14 years.
INVESTING IN CHILDREN ALSO MEANS INVESTING IN TEACHERS. WHAT CAN SCHOOLS DO TO HELP TEACHERS GROW?
Supporting teachers' growth directly enhances student success. At Far Hills, we are committed to continuous learning, which is why we have an endowed fund dedicated to professional development. This investment allows our educators to pursue graduate degrees, obtain specialized certifications, and engage in ongoing training that keeps them at the forefront of best practices in education. By empowering our teachers with the latest research, methodologies, and innovative strategies, we ensure they can provide the highest level of instruction and mentorship to our students.
Investing in children must also require an understanding of their challenges and teaching them how to navigate them.
Absolutely. When I surveyed my eighth-grade class, students shared that they feel immense pressure—to get into a top high school, excel in sports, achieve perfect grades, and meet unrealistic expectations. Social media amplifies these pressures with curated perfection, which can take a toll on their mental and emotional well-being.
Our role as educators is to help children develop resilience, coping skills, and a realistic perspective on success. A strong academic foundation is important, but without curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to overcome setbacks, knowledge alone isn’t enough. Too often, the focus on grades overshadows essential soft skills—like leadership, teamwork, and conflict resolution—yet these are the very qualities that often lead to long-term success.

“WHILE CHILDREN MAY RECEIVE AN EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION, IT BECOMES IRRELEVANT IF THEY LACK INSPIRATION, CURIOSITY, AND RESILIENCE . REAL LEARNING EXTENDS BEYOND KNOWLEDGE ACQUISITION; IT REQUIRES THE ABILITY TO ADAPT, EXPLORE, AND PERSEVERE IN THE

STEVE DIPOLLINA
Floor Coverings International

enhancing your home’s worth
Flooring Solutions Tailored to Your Home and Lifestyle
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY TAMAS SOLYMOSI
A home’s foundation starts at the ground level—literally. But when it comes to floors, it’s not just about durability; it’s about making a statement. Steve Dipollina, owner of Floor Coverings International of Somerset, knows that choosing the right floor can transform a space, adding warmth, character, and style. With a wealth of experience in the home improvement industry, Dipollina’s journey from corporate life to owning a flooring business is a testament to his passion for creating beautiful, functional living spaces.
A CAREER TURNED ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURE
Dipollina’s path to Floor Coverings International is one of both experience and ambition. Before launching his own franchise in the summer of 2022, Dipollina had an extensive career in corporate sales and management with Sherwin Williams. Having managed teams and overseen multiple stores, he was well-versed in the customer service and operational side of home improvement. But after years in corporate life, he yearned for something more hands-on.
"I was looking for an opportunity where I could have more control and flexibility," Dipollina explains. "Floor Coverings International offered a great business model, and it perfectly aligned with my experience in home improvement."
With a passion for customer service and an eye for quality, Dipollina made the leap into franchising. Two and a half years later, his business is thriving, and he credits much of his success to the scalability and adaptability of FCI’s business model.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOORING FOR YOUR HOME
Whether you're renovating or building from the ground up, selecting the right flooring is no small task. Dipollina emphasized that the key to helping clients choose the right product lies in asking the right questions.
“We take the time to understand our customers' needs. Do they have pets? Are they planning to stay in the home long-term? Do they want something stylish, or are they looking for functionality?” Dipollina shares. "These questions help us narrow down options and recommend products that fit both their lifestyle and budget."
For example, while hardwood floors may add timeless beauty and value to a home, they’re not always the most practical choice for families with pets or young children. In these cases, Dipollina often suggests luxury vinyl plank or waterproof laminate, which offer the aesthetic appeal of hardwood without the vulnerability to scratches or moisture damage.
And for pet owners, FCI offers a special line of pet-friendly flooring that resists the "three P's": pee, puke, and poop. These floors are designed to be easily cleaned, making them an ideal choice for households with furry friends.
SHOWROOM ON WHEELS: BRINGING THE STORE TO YOU
One of the standout features of Floor Coverings International is its mobile showroom—a service that
allows customers to browse thousands of flooring options without ever leaving their homes. The fully stocked van, which houses more than 3,000 samples, brings the showroom experience directly to the customer’s doorstep, making it easy to compare styles, colors, and textures in the context of the space they’re designing.
“We come to you,” Dipollina notes. “Whether you're in the middle of a renovation or just starting to think about new floors, we bring the store to your door. Our mobile showroom lets customers visualize the flooring in their own home, which makes a huge difference in their decision-making process.”
Dipollina considers the mobile showroom to be the backbone of their business. The convenience, paired with a vast selection of high-quality products, allows FCI to deliver personalized service in a way few competitors can match.
TRENDS IN FLOORING: WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S CLASSIC
As flooring styles evolve, Dipollina stays attuned to the latest trends while also keeping an eye on what will stand the test of time.
“Wide planks are definitely trending right now, especially in luxury vinyl and laminate. People are leaning toward seven-inch or wider planks for a more modern, spacious look,” he explains. “When it comes to colors, low to medium browns still dominate. Natural, classic hardwood tones are always a safe bet, especially in homes where people plan to stay long-term.”
Floor Coverings International of Somerset team

As for carpet, soft, warm textures are popular, particularly in bedrooms. But for high-traffic areas, many homeowners opt for low-pile styles like Berber or loop carpet, which are more durable and easier to maintain.
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
Looking ahead, Dipollina is excited about the future of Floor Coverings International. In the short two and a half years since launching, the business has seen rapid growth, and Dipollina’s goals are set high. He’s expanding his team and deepening his presence in the New Jersey market, with plans for continued growth over the next five to ten years.
“We want to be the first name people think of when they need flooring in this area. Our goal is to grow without sacrificing the high level of service that has been the foundation of our success,” Dipollina shares.
“We’re all about high-quality service and making sure our customers are completely satisfied.”
He also hopes to maintain the personal touch that defines FCI—whether it’s Dipollina himself answering the phone or his wife, Katie, helping customers directly.
“We're a family business, and we treat our customers like family too,” he says.
INVESTING IN YOUR HOME WITH FLOOR COVERINGS INTERNATIONAL
For homeowners looking to upgrade their space, Dipollina’s advice is simple: Choose what works for your lifestyle and budget. Whether you're installing durable vinyl, refinishing hardwood floors, or installing a petfriendly carpet, FCI offers a wide range of options to fit every need.
With personalized service, expert advice, and a diverse selection of flooring, Floor Coverings International continues to be a trusted partner for homeowners looking to invest in their home’s future.
