The Thankful Issue

In this season of gratitude, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. Thanksgiving encourages us to slow down, embrace the present, and appreciate the people and moments that bring us joy.

This month, I’ve been especially grateful for the small, everyday moments that make life beautiful: the laughter of loved ones, quiet mornings with a cup of coffee, and the chance to be part of such a vibrant community here in Brentwood.

Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, giving back, and celebrating the people and organizations that make Brentwood such a special place. We’re endlessly thankful for our advertising partners, whose support allows us to bring inspiring stories to your doorstep each month, and for the readers who make it all worthwhile.

As we prepare to gather with loved ones, let’s take a moment to reflect on what truly brings meaning to our lives. This holiday season, may we find contentment not in possessions or accolades but in the connections we nurture and the good we do for others, knowing that our actions have a positive impact on our community.

Wishing you and your family a season of gratitude, grace, and many more meaningful moments to come.

CHICK-FIL-A CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF BUSINESS IN BRENTWOOD

Barry and Kim Hooper first met at the Chick-fil-A in the Hickory Hollow Mall in the early 80s. Barry and Kim were both attending college at Middle Tennessee State University at the time, with Barry working at Chick-fil-A and Kim joining the team later after graduating. Both from Smyrna, they are now the owners of the community favorite: the Brentwood Chick-fil-A.

The restaurant cut the ribbon on Oct. 6, 2005, and this fall, they celebrated the location’s 20th anniversary as well as their wedding anniversary.

Back in October 2005, there were 100 people camped outside the location waiting for its doors to open for the first time, where the first 100 customers received free Chick-fil-A for a whole year. There was only one drivethrough lane, and it was packed. At the time, there was a Kroger grocery store across the parking lot, where traveling musicians would park their tour vans. It just so happened that country music singer Jo Dee Messina was parked across the street. An impromptu concert for those in line kicked off the launch.

Kim and Barry had friends and family present as they celebrated the opening with party games, DJs, good food, drinks, the mascot, and other fun activities. Now, after 20 successful years, they are celebrating again. This year’s anniversary party welcomed past employees and guests. There was a prize wheel where you could win restaurant swag, ice cream, and digital offer cards for free meals. There was a cherished cow appearance as well. Cake was served to the workers in appreciation.

Chick-fil-A hosts all categories of people. There are the regulars, the early morning Bible-study goers, the “raving fans” loyal and dedicated, and a men’s group called “The Liars Club” that meets every day in the morning, popping in from 6 to 9 a.m. They all gather to share a good time, make memories, and make use of the scrumptious menu and hospitality.

Kids’ night is also a buzzing time. Chick-fil-A hosts a “Kid’s Activity Night” once a month with mascot Cow and Kid Cow being present. Kids can enjoy a great meal with their families and share in the excitement of the “Eat Mor Chikin” cows.

Be on the lookout because this Nov. 8 will be the last day you can get the pretzel cheddar bacon club or the four different versions of their cherry berry drinks. Grab the treats while you can! On Nov. 10, some of your favorite seasonal classics are returning. The peppermint milkshake will be available, along with the cozy tortilla soup.

Chick-fil-A employs numerous high school and college-aged students. They look for employees who are active, with high character, caring, and with a willingness to grow. All employees can apply for the yearly Chick-fil-A college scholarship that awards anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 toward school—and you can reapply every year. Some working students have received the scholarship three years in a row. Barry and Kim encourage college-age workers to apply.

“We go the extra mile with our staff, giving them training and skills to succeed,” said Kim. Barry and Kim work alongside their staff and seek to create a kind environment with great people. The Hoopers love seeing customers and serving them.

Chick-fil-A supports and collaborates with other businesses. They have partnered with The Oher Foundation, which helps school-age youth and was started by Michael Oher, the football player whose story was told in the movie The Blind Side. The foundation helps local churches, schools, and organizations. They also support local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts by giving them patio space to sell their goodies.

What is the secret sauce that is so popular at Chick-fil-A? It’s the people and the community they have built. Where is Chickfil-A crossing the road in the future? The company will hopefully be expanding globally. With locations already in Canada and the United Kingdom, Chick-fil-A is appearing in fresh new places. Barry and Kim hope their Brentwood restaurant will continue to “evolve and change as the business climate changes,” said Barry.

The Hoopers would like to return the favor to all their well-wishers, employees, friends, and family. They thank them for their contribution and support.

For the Thanksgiving season, the restaurant will have a family night, and for a Christmas celebration, there will be Christmas with the Santa Cow. Make sure you participate in the holiday merriment. To find more details, check out Chick-fil-A’s social media pages.

JOURNEY OF RENEWAL

Discover how Mii amo inspire guests to live more intentionally and more thankfully.

In today’s fast-paced world, finding moments to slow down, reflect, and care for both body and mind has never been more essential. True well-being goes beyond rest; it’s about stepping back with intention, reconnecting with yourself, and embracing gratitude. Since opening its doors in 2001, Mii amo, nestled in the iconic Boynton Canyon of Sedona, Arizona, has set the standard as a global leader in destination spas and wellness resorts. Mii amo works closely with each guest to craft a personalized experience, which the resort refers to as Journeys.

“Mii amo is for everyone!” General manager, Christian Davies points out. “Whether you’re

interested in a solo stay, journeying with a partner, family member, or friend, the destination spa is designed to meet the needs of every kind of individual and their goals. Past guests have journeyed to find reconnection, process grief, hit mental and physical reset, or simply spend some time immersed in the quiet energy of the vortex.”

Mii amo invites guests to embark on three-, four-, seven-, or ten-night all-inclusive Journeys, with each one thoughtfully tailored to the individual. No two experiences are the same, as every guest is guided to reconnect with nature, embrace stillness, and fully immerse themselves in a path to well-being.

“Each Journey is uniquely curated and highly personalized by an individual’s Journey Guide, and no two itineraries are created alike,” Christian explains. “Mii amo also has curated suggested itineraries for those seeking a specific type of stay, including taking silent reflection on a Quiet Quest or looking to dive deeper into holistic longevity.”

As part of its commitment to meeting guests exactly where they are in life, Mii amo hosted its PeriMenopause Wellbeing Pathway Series in September, a transformative three-night Journey designed to support women through one of the most pivotal stages of life. The experience blended immersive education with restorative treatments, creating space for both learning and deep relaxation. Sessions with experts like Dr. Angela DeRosa reframed the conversation around hormones, breaking down the ways they shape energy, mood, brain function, and sexual health. From exploring the importance of testosterone in women’s health to practical, stigma-free discussions, the series empowered guests with knowledge often overlooked.

Between workshops, guests immersed themselves in Mii amo’s signature treatments, each chosen to balance the body and quiet the mind. Therapies such as the 100-minute Abhyanga Shirodhara, with its synchronized four-hand massage and meditative flow of warm oil across the forehead, brought profound calm and release. Complementary offerings like Intentional Aromatherapy Massage or Cranial Sacral therapy provided additional pathways for restoring balance. The series offered a rare opportunity for women to not only to care for their bodies, but to leave with a deeper understanding of themselves.

“The transformative three-day workshop was designed specifically for women seeking to optimize their hormonal health, restore vitality, and embrace a more vibrant, empowered version of themselves,” Christian says. “It was led by renowned experts in the fields of women’s health, functional medicine, and aesthetic wellness, offering rich learning, intimate discussion, and hands-on opportunities in a serene, luxurious setting.”

Although every Journey at Mii amo is unique, each one contains the same thoughtful detail, care, and intention that define the resort’s philosophy. No matter the focus, guests can expect a balance of expert-led guidance, restorative treatments, and space for reflection, all woven together to create a deeply personal experience. The next scheduled series, Circles of Gratitude, will take place Nov. 23-26. Designed to deepen the gratitude for all that guests have and all that they are, these sessions are designed to cultivate a lasting gratitude practice and mindset that will invite greater joy, purpose, and intention. It’s an opportunity to pause before the bustle of the holiday season, step into a slower rhythm, and reconnect with what matters most.

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

Luxurious Living With Many In-Demand and Unique Characteristics

A PERFECT PLACE TO GATHER WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

The Primm Farm development in Brentwood encompasses 24 of the most luxurious homes for those wanting to live their best lives. With a secluded feel in the small enclave of Cool Springs, it’s also conveniently located to shopping, restaurants, the interstate, and more. One of these newly built homes, located at 8101 Turning Point Drive, is situated on a desirable cul-de-sac and features 7,622 square feet, with five bedrooms (three of which are on the main level), five full bathrooms, and two half-bathrooms. “It’s a transitional home that balances contemporary and traditional elements to create this stunning home built by Landon Development,” explains Susan Gregory, an award-winning Realtor with Onward Real Estate.

When entering the home, the hallway showcases handcrafted gas lanterns and custom-built in cabinetry with quartz countertops, evoking a sense of warmth, serenity, and sophistication.

With its large windows, soaring ceiling heights, and open concept, the house is light and airy, boasting numerous unique features. “It has a greenhouse with raised planter beds for the gardening enthusiast, but this space could work well as an art studio because of all the windows and a drain in the floor,” she says.

The kitchen is a true masterpiece that befits the opulence of the home. A professional-grade stove takes center stage, and premium appliances are on display throughout. The expansive island with its two-sided seating encourages people to gather around the heart of the home. Additionally, the working pantry, equipped with its own high-grade appliances, is a chef’s dream come true.

There are bonus rooms upstairs and downstairs, as well as a workout room. “The greenhouse, workout room, media room, and family room all have doors that open out to the pool area,” says Susan. “So, it’s great if you're having a party because everybody can easily circulate.”

Speaking of parties, the indoor bar area has everything needed for the perfect cocktail, including an ice maker, refrigerator, and black composite sink. Just add alcohol, and enjoy. Or, choose the perfect bottle for any occasion in the wine room, which can hold up to 435 of your favorites.

Other unique features include incredible wood accents on the ceilings, as well as on some of the walls, and the house even features an elevator!

The multiple fireplaces provide cozy atmospheres conducive for curling up on a chilly afternoon with a good book, chatting with friends and family, or falling asleep on a cold winter's night.

“I feel like our clients get more attention and more value by having a more intimate and knowledgeable local brokerage instead of one that is headquartered out of state.”

The primary bedroom is a true oasis with its vaulted ceiling with wooden beams and a sophisticated ArcusStone® style fireplace. It even has a coffee bar! The spacious walk-in closet and beautiful en-suite bathroom with two vanities, a soaking tub, a large walk-in shower, and a sauna complete the spa-like feel.

Outside, on the almost one-acre, beautifully landscaped property, is a heated saltwater pool, a stone fireplace with a large, covered seating area, and a fantastic outdoor kitchen equipped with a grill, refrigerator, sink, ice maker, and everything else needed for a fun outdoor get-together. The large property also provides ample space to build an impressive sports court, install an in-ground trampoline, or any other feature the homeowner desires.

For Susan Gregory, representing this type of home falls right within her real estate niche. “As a Nashville native, I am very familiar with the area,” she says. “I have focused on all aspects of real estate, in particular, new construction, for 30 years. And, she’s been involved with this subdivision since the beginning, so she’s able to answer any questions prospective buyers may have.

While working for Bob Parks for the past 25 years at PARKS Realty and now at Onward Real Estate, Susan has excelled in the industry. “I've been awarded the Best in Business Award multiple years, and have been consecutively named a top-producing agent in the Middle Tennessee area.”

Onward Real Estate, which she describes as a small, boutique-type agency with an international reach, featuring many top-producing agents. “I feel like our clients get more attention and more value by having a more intimate and knowledgeable local brokerage instead of one that is headquartered out of state,” she says.

MAKING THE MOST OF HIS GOLDEN YEARS AT TRADITIONS OF MILL CREEK

STAYING VITAL

At 95 years old, Robert Kramer has lived a life full of adventure and love. Born in Washburn, Iowa, in 1930, he spent his first two years of school in a one-room schoolhouse. At the age of 20, with the

ASSISTED LIVING, INDEPENDENT LIVING, AND MEMORY CARE…”

Korean War looming, he enlisted in the Navy. He served from 1950 to 1954 as an electronics technician aboard the USS Cowell DD547, which provided carrier escort duties in Korea.

During his time in the military, Robert had the opportunity to visit many countries around the world, including Japan, Egypt, Greece, France, and Algeria. (Later, he would travel even more with his first and second wives to places like Peru, Costa Rica, and the National Parks in the US and Canada.)

He spent most of his career in the Nuclear Power industry, which took him to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. He was married to his college sweetheart, Mary, for 38 years before she passed away in 1998. During their marriage, they had five children—four boys and one girl.

Robert was lucky enough to find love again, this time with Clare, a friend and widow, whom he married

and safe, and where Robert could also make his home.

“In 2021, we looked at different places that would meet our needs, and Traditions of Mill Creek was the one we chose,” he says. “It offered all three services—Assisted Living, Independent Living, and Memory Care—under one roof.”

This was important to Robert, who wanted to make sure he could visit Clare and help care for her on a daily basis. “We've been together for almost 25 years now, and I just don't want to give her up,” he says. While Robert is in the Independent Living part of the community, Clare is in the Memory Care unit.

In addition to spending time with his wife, he also enjoys playing music for the other residents at Traditions of Mill Creek. He has always loved music and, over the years, has learned to play the accordion, saxophone, sousaphone, and piano.

Model building, which he has pursued since his youth, is another one of his interests, and to this day, he continues to apply his skills. The facility allowed him to convert a storage room into a woodworking shop and store all of his tools there. “I can spread out a plan and work on it and not have to pick it up and put it away every time I stop working,” says Robert. “It's a nice little room with two tables in it.” It's actually available to other residents as well.

Here, he builds ships, airplanes, and trains. While most of the models stay in his room, he sometimes puts them on display at the center. Now, he is finishing up a special chair that he can use for his musical performances. “It's a folding chair that converts into a handcart, and that way I can carry the accordion to where I’m playing and then open the chair to sit. It has no arms and is the right height.”

Staying active, both mentally and physically, is essential to Robert. “If you don't use it, you lose it,” he says. “I play bridge a couple of times a week, there’s a Sit and Be Fit class available five times a week, and there is also musical entertainment. I've gotten to know some of the performers, and I've actually performed a couple of numbers with them.”

The other residents, he says, are friendly, and the staff is very attentive. He’s happy to be in a place that allows him to be with his wife, have friends, stay engaged, and continue the hobbies and interests he has enjoyed for most of his life.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH GARY SINISE

Academy Award winning actor Gary Sinise sits down with Brentwood Lifestyle for an inspiring conversation about the Gary Sinise Foundation

From the hills of Hollywood to the hills of Tennessee, Gary Sinise has carried his love for entertainment, community, and service the whole way. Since his iconic role as Lieutenant Dan in the movie Forrest Gump, Sinise has worked hard to build a legacy through the Gary Sinise Foundation. Over the years, he has continued to make a profound impact through his work with veterans and service workers around the nation.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR INSPIRATION BEHIND THE ADMIRABLE WORK YOU DO AT THE GARY SINISE FOUNDATION.

I have a lot of veterans in my own family, and on my wife's side of the family, as well. There were a lot of factors that contributed to the foundation, going back to the ’80s when I started supporting Vietnam veterans in the Chicago area… I felt a lot of compassion for them. I tried to help in various ways when I was living in Chicago and then moved out to Los Angeles, [where I] ended up getting a part in Forrest Gump as Lieutenant Dan — I actually was invited to the National Convention of the Disabled American Veterans Organization because [my character] was a double amputee. They invited me to come to Chicago to receive an award for playing Lieutenant Dan. I went and was very moved… There were around two thousand wounded veterans in that ballroom. [I’ve remained] involved with them for over thirty years now, but that all led up to what happened after September 11th, 2001. I had just started volunteering for the USO and was supporting a lot of different military nonprofits... I started meeting extraordinary people. I'd done many USO tours and started meeting a bunch of people that were involved in various nonprofits that were supporting the military, and then I just figured, ‘hey, this is something that I'm very passionate about — something I care about — and I think I'm helping a little bit by showing up,’ so I decided to start my own foundation and we launched in 2011.

YOUR FOUNDATION HELPS VETERANS IN SO MANY WAYS — CAN YOU EXPAND ON HOW YOU SERVE?

I got involved with so many different nonprofits that were operating in many different kinds of spaces… I was just lending a hand and going out there and entertaining the troops. I started taking a band with me on tours, then getting involved with other organizations that were supporting Gold Star children and first responders. All of that led to the creation of the Gary Sinise Foundation and our mission. Having done a lot of work with a lot of different organizations, I had seen where the needs were, and I saw how I could participate in helping fill those

needs, so it became clear that it was time to start my own organization. We made a very broad mission statement that [allowed us to] fill needs in a lot of different spaces. It's a big mission… We have to have a pretty strong and active team to fill all those needs, but thankfully, the American people continue to support us, and that allows us to expand our programs all the time and do a lot of different things.

WALLS OF HONOR IS A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO TRIBUTE A LOCAL HERO. HOW DOES INVOLVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY BY HAVING THEM WRITE MESSAGES OF GRATITUDE ON THE INSIDE FRAME OF THE NEW HOME THAT IS BEING BUILT HELP DEEPEN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN CIVILIANS AND SERVICE MEMBERS?

[In our mission statement,] we support and provide various programs designed to entertain, educate, inspire, strengthen, and build communities... when I put built communities in there, it was out of something that I had been doing prior to the foundation. [I would go] to these various communities [where] we were building homes for our wounded, and trying to rally community support around that local hero to make sure they knew that hero was there in their town. I didn't want to just build a house for somebody who had been severely wounded and then have them disappear into the house and never come out… I wanted the community to rally around [them] because that's how we help each other, right? I wanted people to be aware of that, and I wanted to build communities of support in various ways. We're supporting the spouses of our fallen heroes by creating empowerment workshops for them and building a strong community of support with people that are going through the same type of thing. Same with our Gold Star children - children that have lost a parent in service - we have programs that are designed specifically to bring those children together, introduce them to one another, and build a community of support within that group. When you build these communities of support, it shows people that they are not alone in what they're dealing with.

“I wanted the community to rally around [them] because that’s how we help each other, right?”

WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED THE FOUNDATION, DID YOU EVER EXPECT IT TO BECOME WHAT IT IS TODAY — MAKING SUCH AN INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCE NOT JUST FOR VETERANS, BUT FOR THEIR FAMILIES TOO?

When I launched it, I wanted to create something that was going to be lasting and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with any of the [existing] top nonprofit organizations that are supporting veterans, first responders, and their families. I put a lot of thought into how we could do that, but over time, things have

gotten stronger — and we've earned the trust of the American people, which is very important. My goal was to rally people to support [those] sacrificing in service to our country, to create something that was reliable that the American people would trust and feel is a worthy organization to support because of the way we're doing our work and because of the people that we were trying to do it for. I'm very grateful that we have a lot of support right now, but there are always evolving and changing needs… always a need for more support… so we're always looking to build bases of support so that we can expand our programs and serve more people.

WHAT MADE NASHVILLE THE PERFECT CITY TO MOVE BOTH YOUR FAMILY AND FOUNDATION TO?

I was in Southern California working in the movie and television business — I actually started the foundation while I was still working on the television series CSI New York . I had a little two-room office at CBS Studio Center in Studio City, and that's where it started. Eventually, we moved into a larger space in Woodland Hills, California. Then, I decided I wanted to move my family to Nashville. I've had good relationships here in town over the years with the folks in the music business… I've actually done many concerts, not too far from here at Fort Campbell. I started zeroing in on Nashville because of the amount of time that I had already spent here — and the people that I knew here — and Tennessee is very centrally located. I've done concerts at many of those bases all around Tennessee, and they’re very easy to get to. Every day we're doing something, and it's just a good place to be. Plus, it's also very veteran-friendly and very supportive of our veterans and first responders. People really care about the men and women who serve our country here.

LATER THIS MONTH, THE GARY SINISE FOUNDATION WILL BE DEDICATING ITS HUNDREDTH HOME. WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE WALK AWAY THINKING OR FEELING AFTER EXPERIENCING ONE OF YOUR EVENTS OR SEEING A HOME DEDICATION?

What’s fantastic about an event like our home dedication is that you have many corporate sponsors that provide support for these homes that we build… and in many cases, a lot of those folks come to the home dedications, and they're a part of it. That [not only] gives us an opportunity to thank them for their support, but it also gives them an opportunity to spend some time with the wounded service member that they've supported. They can see the change that they're making.

These homes that we build really provide opportunities for the service member and family to be more independent, so we provide all kinds of mechanics in the house [using] smart technology. When you go into a home like that at one of our dedications and you see all the people that are involved, it’s inspiring. One of the goals for me was to provide an opportunity for people to come together to support the men and women and serve our country, and now, many of these sponsors [and] individuals who supported us want [to continue] to do more and more. If you look at all our programs, they're all designed to lift people up and make things better for somebody who's sacrificed a lot. It's a good feeling to know that just a little bit of effort can make a big difference in somebody's life.

YOU’RE PERFORMING WITH THE LT. DAN BAND AT THE GRAND OLE OPRY THIS VETERAN’S DAY— WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TAKE THE STAGE AT SUCH AN ICONIC VENUE FOR SUCH A MEANINGFUL OCCASION?

We played at the Opry last summer, which was spectacular. I mean, I'm an actor… I don't even play for living.. and all of a sudden, here I am up on the Opry stage playing this iconic spot with all these great artists on the bill, and it was just the biggest kick! What a thrill. We’ve played hundreds of shows, and the folks of the Opry [are] very supportive of our veterans, and know the mission that I'm on here. They wanted to find an opportunity to get the band [back] in there, so we decided to do something special for the 30th anniversary of Forrest Gump. It went so well that the Opry said, ‘When are you coming back?’ So, I started talking to them about doing something on Veterans Day, and they were keen on that. We’ve got a great bunch of artists on the bill. [There is also] something special that we're going to do… my son, Mac, died of a very rare cancer, Chordoma, in early 2024. He was a great musician, composer, songwriter… he wrote a lot of music. Right before he died, he finished an album called Resurrection and Revival . He recorded that music in the final year of his life. After he died, I found all this other music on his laptop that he had written. My band [now] plays two of his songs in our show, so Mac is going to have his Opry debut on Veterans Day!

LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR HOW THE GARY SINISE FOUNDATION CAN CONTINUE TO GROW ITS PRESENCE IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE AND BEYOND?

When we got to Tennessee, I made it a point with our staff and our leaders — I have a great team of folks that do the daily work of the Gary Sinise Foundation — and said, ‘This is our new home. Franklin is our home. Tennessee is our state, and I want to be a part of the community.’ I want us to be a real presence and for people to know that we are here and we are serving our veterans and our first responders. Being a part of the community is very, very important to me — and our staff is doing a great job with their outreach and making sure people that might need our services know they are available and [that] we're here to help. I want to continue to expand that. As we set the stage at the Gary Sinise Foundation for the long haul, I want the foundation to be around a long time. I'm working very hard [continue to build] something that can last for decades to come.

“Gabrielle was truly a pleasure to work with—always upbeat, professional, and accessible. She helped us choose a smart price point to attract buyers, recommended painting the house a fresh neutral color, and brought in a talented stager and photographer to showcase its best features. Throughout the process, she was candid, responsive, and persistent in promoting our home. Thanks to her dedication, we felt supported every step of the way and are so appreciative of all her hard work.”

Monroe Harding lends a hand to young adults transitioning from foster care into independent living

“Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done,” said Bryan Stevenson, lawyer and social justice activist. It’s a thought that Pamela Madison, Chief Executive Officer of Monroe Harding nonprofit, lives by.  Madison has worked at Monroe Harding (MH) for 16 years, four years as the CEO. Their mission is straightforward: to transform the lives of young people. As foster youth age out of the foster care system, sometimes, they are struck with the lack of resources and support they need. MH aims to alleviate that stress and help its young people become successful individuals.

There are three main programs available: Foster Care, Supportive Housing, and the Resource Center, which is located in downtown Nashville. With the Foster Care program, MH recruits and trains families within Middle Tennessee to become foster parents for children from birth to 18 years old. The ultimate goal of foster care is to ensure children have a safe and stable home while their birth parents prepare for reunification.

The next program, alongside the foster program, is their Supportive Housing program. Through the Supportive Housing program, young adults over 18 years old gain the stability of a safe home while building the skills and confidence to live independently. There are 44 beds across seven homes located

in North and West Nashville. Each home offers young adults their own bedroom, private bath, and full walk-in closet, along with a shared common area that promotes community.  Currently, 41 of the 44 beds are occupied. The young adults are provided “wrap-around” services, including assigned case managers, career and educational skills training, as well as an on-staff therapist to work through any trauma for which they may need counseling.

The Resource Center helps young adults who have aged out of foster care and unhoused youth reach their educational and career goals,  whether that means earning their HiSET degree, formerly known as GED, graduating from college, or building a career that inspires them. Many of the young adults from MH have gone on to achieve degrees from Middle Tennessee State University, Tennessee State University, Tennessee College of Applied Technology, and technical programs. One such individual earned a Master’s from Columbia University. Another MH student completed the program, going on to establish

a career of interest in cosmetology. She is now an adamant supporter and volunteer of MH while owning her own barber shop in Midtown.

If you are curious about how to support MH’s mission, there are many needs that can be met. MH is looking for volunteers for the upcoming holiday season. MH hosts their annual holiday party every December, named “Calling All Elves,” for current and past fostering families within their care. Santa Claus will be there, making this one of the nonprofit’s favorite holiday traditions. The community can make the holidays brighter by sponsoring a child to help fulfill their Christmas wishes. Local businesses, organizations, and churches can also support by hosting the party, and volunteers are welcome to help wrap gifts.

Not just during the holidays, but throughout the year, MH could use speakers to teach classes, companies to host job shadowing and internships, as well as tutors.

How can we help change the world to make it a better place? Madison reminds us that when we choose not to judge children by the tragedies they’ve experienced, we create a world that is kinder and more compassionate.

To become a foster parent or attend MH’s virtual monthly Q&A session, visit their website or call.

THANKFUL FOR THEIR LOYAL CLIENTS AND GROWING COMMUNITY, WOODWARD HOMES CONTINUES TO BUILD WITH PURPOSE AND PRIDE.

Building your dream home can feel overwhelming, whether you’re starting from the ground up or renovating a space to make it your own. It takes the right team to not only bring your vision to life but to create a place that feels warm, welcoming, and uniquely yours. That’s where Woodward Homes comes in. Founded by husband-and-wife team Mike and Elizabeth Jakubowski, this family business combines expert construction with thoughtful design services, making them the perfect partners to transform a house into the home you’ve always imagined.

“After working for other builders and architects for 15 years, we decided to branch out and give it a shot in our own business,” Mike explains.  “During our time at our previous companies,  we learned valuable lessons on what to do, but also just as importantly, what not to do. Our vision has always been clear: build relationships and grow from building a solid reputation while focusing on customer service and not the bottom line. “

Together, Mike and Elizabeth bring more than 35 years of combined experience, with a portfolio that spans everything from intimate kitchen remodels to multi-million-dollar custom homes. Regardless of the project’s scale or scope, they approach each one with the same level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and genuine care, qualities that often get lost with larger builders.

“We're a small family-owned company without all the red tape and rules of larger builders,” Mike says. “We can be very flexible before, during, and after construction with changes, etc. We live in Brentwood and do most of our work here, and love our community.”

From complete home renovations and custom new builds to kitchen and bathroom remodels, screened porches, and outdoor living spaces, Woodward Homes offers a full spectrum of construction services. They’re able to take on projects of any scale and work closely with clients to craft creative, functional plans that reflect each homeowner’s unique vision. Woodward Designs also provides thoughtfully crafted floor plans available for purchase online, making it easier than ever to bring dream homes to life.

At the heart of every project, however, are the relationships they’ve built with their clients. Mike and Elizabeth emphasize collaboration just as much as craftsmanship, taking time to truly listen to the homeowners and understanding what they need most. Their process isn’t just about creating beautiful spaces; it’s about creating homes that reflect the people inside the house.

in the community. Their reputation has grown not just through the quality of their work, but through the trust they’ve created with clients, which often leads to repeat projects and word-of-mouth referrals. For Mike and Elizabeth, each home is more than a project on paper; it’s a partnership rooted in care, integrity, and respect for the people they work with.

As the holiday season approaches, Mike advises against starting a kitchen remodel during this busy time of year. Instead, he notes that it’s common this late in the year for outdoor projects, such as updating windows and doors, or adding porches, decks, and screened-in spaces.

“More than anything, we love working with good people.”
— Mike Jakubowski

“More than anything, we love working with good people,” Mike says. “When we have been recommended by their family or friends and there is a level of trust and confidence in us, it makes everything that much better.”

The balance of expertise and personal connection is what has made Woodward Homes stand out

As the year comes to an end, it’s the perfect time to start envisioning the changes you want to bring to your home in 2026. Whether it’s a full renovation, a new build, or a small project that makes daily life more comfortable, Woodward Homes is ready to turn these dreams into reality. Although there are hardships in our world there is still light to be seen and voices to be heard

Amid War

War is a complicated and delicate subject for those of us who have experienced it firsthand or indirectly. Many brave soldiers have fought on our behalf, protecting us from our enemies abroad and domestically. Beginning as Armistice Day in 1918 to commemorate the end of WWI, the holiday known as Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 to thank and honor our soldiers and veterans.

One such veteran, Richard Casper, has served our country overseas as well as our community here at home, establishing a nonprofit called CreatiVets. The mission of CreatiVets is to empower veterans to heal through the arts and music, aiming to equip veterans with lifelong skills and confidence to excel in life.

Casper joined the military as a Marine in 2003 after witnessing 9/11, feeling the drive to stand up and defend our nation and its citizens. He earned a Purple Heart and served as Guard of the President.

Returning home from Iraq—where he served for four years and a month—Casper was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury after surviving an incident. He also lost a close comrade, and upon returning home, he began healing through the arts of songwriting, drawing, painting, and sculpting. Casper decided to finish school with a degree in art. CreatiVets was soon to follow.

Casper attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, with his primary focus in ceramics. After a chance meeting with songwriter Mark Irwin, Casper was invited to Nashville to write music with him. Experiencing the catharsis of composition, Casper wanted other soldiers to experience the same. He started CreatiVets in July 2013 with co-founder Linda Tarrson.

The nonprofit helps veterans express their emotions, find healing through the arts, and repurpose their war experiences. There are numerous programs for veterans to choose from: Visual Voices, which involves art and mixed media; Stories in the Stars, which teaches astrophotography and allows veterans to explore the cosmos as a metaphor for resilience; Scars to Scripts, where veterans turn their life stories into screenplays, reclaiming their narrative through theater; and the music program, Songs of Survival. Veterans can share their stories through music—much like Casper—finding connection and voice through songwriting.

Veterans are encouraged to try the program and are flown to Nashville, all expenses paid, to participate. The Grand Ole Opry even welcomes the vets and writers backstage at their iconic venue. One such veteran wrote his song and opened for Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters in his first-ever performance!

“I’VE

WITNESSED COUNTLESS VETERANS OVER THE YEARS HEAL FROM THEIR OWN WOUNDS OF WAR, AND IT IS MY VISION TO BRING THESE PROGRAMS TO AS MANY VETERANS AS WE CAN REACH, AND TODAY THE DEMAND IS HIGH,” SAID CASPER.

The fine arts program explores painting, ceramics, 3D printing, sculpting, photography, and mixed media. The theater arts are also a part of the mission. Veterans can write a screenplay about their experiences, viewing their story through an objective lens. On Nov. 12 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, there will be a ticketed fundraiser for CreatiVets. Performers will showcase the veterans’ plays, bringing them to life on stage.

Veterans need to be understood, and the arts are a way for them to tell their stories. The therapy that the program offers allows a veteran to rewrite their memories and experiences, from traumatic to positive. They hear their song come to life and are immediately proud to share it with their spouse and family in a way they were unable to before.

Being in the military created a community—a meaningful and enduring camaraderie. It has taught Casper to be compassionate, understanding, and courageous. Serving your country is what Casper terms agape love—the love in which one lays down their life for another. There is no greater sacrifice.

It’s amazing what one man, with the help of those around him, can start. By sharing his story, Richard has helped his military

peers to heal and recover. Casper hopes his message, story, and contributions will save lives.

“I’ve witnessed countless veterans over the years heal from their own wounds of war, and it is my vision to bring these programs to as many veterans as we can reach, and today the demand is high,” said Casper.

CreatiVets is in the process of purchasing church property in Nashville to begin a 24-hour art and music center. To help with their cause, visit the website below and click on the volunteer link. One of the ways you can contribute is through teacherships— teachers are welcome from all walks of art. Currently, they even have a stained-glass artist teaching class.

You can listen to the songs of our noble soldiers on all streaming platforms. There are 60 songs and over 20 million streams, beautifully written with heartfelt passion and sentiment.

Veterans, there are not enough words to express our gratitude for your service, strength, and bravery. You are our heroes.

Happy Veterans Day. CreatiVets.org

Family Businesses Sebring Design Build and Woodward Home Share Their Family Recipes

Bryan’s Chocolate Chip Cookies (Sebring Design Build)

YIELD

About three dozen cookies

INGREDIENTS

• 1 ½ cups brown sugar

• ¾ cup white sugar

• 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened

• 2 eggs

• 1 tsp. vanilla extract

• ½ tsp. baking soda

• ½ tsp. salt

• 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

• 1 (12 oz.) bag semi-sweet chocolate chips

“A warm cookie and a house full of laughter are the best reminders of home,” Bryan Sebring says. “For us, being a family business isn’t just about working together — it’s about treating every client like family. We believe remodeling is personal, and every project is a chance to strengthen the ties that make a house a home.”

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until smooth and fluffy.

3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking soda, salt, and flour.

5. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, mixing slowly until just combined.

6. Gently fold in the chocolate chips by hand.

7. Drop rounded spoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet.

8. Bake for 10–15 minutes, depending on your oven. Keep an eye on them and pull them out just before they pass the “ooey-gooey” stage for the perfect chewy center.

9. Let cool slightly before enjoying (if you can wait!).

Estelle Apple Crunch (Woodward Homes)

INGREDIENTS

• 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell

• 5–7 tart apples

• ½ cup sugar

• 1 tsp. cinnamon

• ½ cup sugar

• ¾ cup flour

• 1/3 cup butter

DIRECTIONS

1. Pare apples and cut into eighths.

2. Arrange in a 9-inch pastry-lined pie plate.

3. Combine ½ cup sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples.

4. Combine the remaining ½ cup of sugar with the flour.

5. Cut in butter until crumbly, then sprinkle over the apples.

6. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 40 minutes. Cool before serving.

7. Top with a spoonful of whipped cream and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.

“Baking and building are not as different as one might think,” Elizabeth Jakubowski says. “Both require attention to detail. It can be difficult to visualize the end product, but with precision and care to each ingredient, the results are an end product worth the wait.”

Tips on meal prepping for less stress

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.

Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.

Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.

To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

2 WEEKS BEFORE

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu

• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.

• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.

• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).

• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.

• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

4-5 DAYS BEFORE

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries

• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.

• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.

• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.

2-3 DAYS BEFORE

Prep Meals & Set the Table

• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.

• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.

• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.

• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.

1 DAY BEFORE

Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks

• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.

• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.

• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.

• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!

• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.
