The Explore Issue

We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes, too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can calculate the time, effort, and investment it will cost me. These things result in the highest control level and the least uncertainty.

But the truth is -  that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.

We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being beginners, and even for getting lost. Unstructured and open-ended times are the best for making connections, nurturing friendships, and building trust.

I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” don't even have to be big and crazy. July is the perfect month to explore. With school out and having long summer days, consider turning off the TV, putting down the phone, and thinking of ways you can explore.

Exploration can look like various ways, from staycations to road trips to even venturing just twenty minutes away to explore a part of town you’ve never seen before.

We hope that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration, prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life, lose yourself on a trail or in a book, book that trip you’ve been thinking about, and make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar.

Lakeside Living Explore Luxury

There’s a reason many people choose all-inclusive vacations when looking to travel. They want to get away from it all and totally relax. Now, there’s a place close by to do exactly that.

Peninsula at Wilson Lake, located in the beautiful town of Florence, Alabama, is just under two hours from Nashville and Birmingham, three hours from Memphis, and four hours from Atlanta. A gated 120-acre lakefront community, it will offer every amenity and service one could ask for to rejuvenate and refresh one’s body and mind.

“We're going to have a swimming pool, a clubhouse, a fitness facility, and tennis and pickleball courts,” says Kevin Tyner, one of three partners involved in this development. “We’ll have a really big green space - about half the size of a football field - in the town square. It’ll be a place where kids can play frisbee, throw footballs, play baseball, and run around. There will also be food trucks parked around the perimeter.”

In addition, there will be walking trails throughout the neighborhood, plus a boardwalk that goes around the lake area touching the property. It will be eight feet wide and a great place to fish, walk, and ride bikes.

“We're also building a covered sunset pavilion right down by the water,” he says. “It'll have TVs, tables, and fire pits all around it, so residents can go down there and watch football, hang out by the fire, and watch the sunset while they and their friends enjoy a glass of beer or wine.”

CONTINUED >

And there’s no need to get in a car. People can just take their golf carts and go wherever they want inside the development.

The property also sits adjacent to Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club. “Turtle Point has given us an easement onto their property, which is a little bridge that goes right over a creek through the woods,” says Kevin. (Residents can fill out an application to become members.) “It has an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones course, its own marina, and a swimming and tennis facility. It also has a restaurant in the clubhouse and a pro shop.”

Two additional Robert Trent Jones golf courses, open to the public, are directly across the water and a five-minute boat ride away.

For many residents, this might be their second home, while others may live there year-round, but in either case, they can take advantage of the finest guest services team. “When you’re on your way to the development, all you have to do is make a phone call and request what you want. For example, we own two marinas that are within a two-minute boat ride from where our land touches the water. You can say, ‘I'll be there at 4:00 p.m., and I want my boat brought over to the day docks.’ They’ll bring it over, and it'll be fully gassed up and washed. There can even be a cooler with drinks in it or whatever you want.”

There’s a cleaning service and landscapers available to take care of your property as well, so it’s a true respite from all the mundane tasks of everyday life.

“We're going to have a swimming pool, a clubhouse, a fitness facility, and tennis and pickleball courts.”

One of the more unique things about the property is that even though it feels like a secluded getaway, it’s within minutes of a grocery store, restaurants, and shopping. There’s no need to pack up everything needed to spend time at the lake.

Peninsula at Wilson Lake had its kick-off event on June 8th and now offers various-sized lots for sale. “It’s going to be built in a multitude of phases,” he says. “Initially, we’re developing phases 1A and 1B, which consist of 92 home sites. We have a list of five approved builders, as well as architects, but people can use their own, of course.”

Some of the smaller homes will be around 1,800 to 2,000 square feet, while others may go all the way up to 3,500 or 4,000 square feet. “We expect construction to begin in the spring and for people to start moving in shortly after,” says Kevin.

JOE MUER SEAFOOD PREPARES TO CELEBRATE

ONE YEAR OF THEIR NASHVILLE LOCATION

ARTICLE

In the heart of Capitol View is Joe Muer Seafood, a renowned Detroit-based restaurant known for its sustainable, exceptionally fresh seafood and upscale dining experience. Although its Nashville location has been open for less than a year, it quickly captivated the city and has become a popular dinner and happy hour hot spot for locals and visitors alike.

While guests at the Nashville location enjoy the food specialties, they may be unaware of the restaurant’s long and beautiful history, which dates back to 1929, when the Muer family opened the first Joe Muer Seafood location in Detroit. For 60 years, Joe Muer was a legendary staple of the Detroit culinary scene. It was widely beloved and earned numerous awards throughout the decades before the Muer family closed its doors in 1989.

This all changed during a fateful golf outing between Joe Muer III and Joe Vicari when Muer sold Vicari not only the restaurant's name but also his beloved recipes. Since 2011, Joe and Rosalie Vicari have preserved Joe Muer Seafood and its legacy, relaunching the restaurant and helping it grow outside of Detroit, introducing a new decade of customers to their culinary masterpieces. Shortly after opening a second location in Michigan, the Vicari’s saw Nashville's vibrant atmosphere and impeccable dining scene as the ideal setting for their third Joe Muer Seafood restaurant.

“We visited Nashville for the first time during CMA Fest a few years ago,” Rosalie explains. “We thought to ourselves, ‘This city is really something special,’ and we went back a few times afterward before deciding that Nashville would be the perfect spot for our first expansion outside of Michigan.”

Soon enough, the Vicari’s hired a Chicago designer who brought their vision to life, creating an elegant and chic yet comfortable dining atmosphere. In August 2023, Joe Muer Seafood Nashville opened its doors in Capitol View.

“The Gulch is a beautiful area, and it’s so easy to get to from anywhere in the city,” Rosalie says. Once guests enter the restaurant, they are met with floorto-ceiling windows, a sophisticated red, black, white, and gold color scheme, and colorful lobster artwork decorating the restaurant's walls.

Joe Muer Seafood is committed to serving the freshest fish possible. They work tirelessly to ensure that their seafood is served within 72 hours of being out of water, guaranteeing the utmost freshness in every dish. Guests can choose from a robust menu featuring fresh lobster, flounder, shrimp, and even prime-cut steak and chicken. Wash down your meal of choice with one of their phenomenal specialty cocktails, or consider splitting a bottle with the table from their carefully curated, award-winning wine menu.

“We always serve and source the best food possible,” Rosalie says. “What we use makes such a difference in the final product, so we take the extra step to search for the finest ingredients to create beautiful and delicious dishes.”

The Vicari’s have fallen in love with Nashville and its people, and Joe Muer has quickly become a fan favorite among residents. “The people in Nashville are amazing,” Rosalie exclaims. “Our customers have invited us over to drink wine with them. They are just very, very friendly people, and we are honored to be a part of this community.”

Preparing to celebrate their one-year anniversary, they are developing innovative ways to spice up the dining experience. They encourage guests to come for dinner before any downtown event to utilize their complimentary parking lot or $10 valet service. After you finish your meal, the restaurant will provide an Uber or Lyft credit to use towards getting to your event. When you get dropped back off at Joe Muer, you can top the night off with a nightcap or get your car and drive home.

Joe Muer Seafood is currently offering a summertime special consisting of a prefixed dinner that includes salad, lobster, filet, dessert, and a side for $99, allowing guests to sample menu favorites. They also offer Golden Hour on weeknights from 4 to 6 p.m., which includes a selection of small plates and drink specials.

EXPLORING THE BRAIN & MENTAL HEALTH

Jason Wahler and Dr. Amen Sit Down And Discuss The Importance Of Brain And Mental Health

ARTICLE BY SOPHIE BROCK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Jason Wahler and Dr. Amen

One area of health that often faces many misconceptions is mental and brain health. Engaging in conversations about these topics can be incredibly beneficial as these vulnerable moments can lead to healing and human connection. Brentwood Lifestyle had the opportunity to sit down with Jason Wahler and Dr. Daniel Amen, director and founder of the Change Your Brain Foundation, to discuss brain and mental health.

CAN YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY THAT YOU KNEW THINGS WERE GOING TO GET BETTER?

JW: Yes, I remember the first time things started to get better. It was when I opened up, got really honest about what I was going through, and admitted I needed help. When I did that, there was a huge sense of relief, and I knew this was the first step in the right direction. Through my process, I’ve created this AAA mantra that helps with any struggle I face: awareness, acceptance, and action. If I’m not aware of the problem, I cannot accept it, and if I cannot accept it, I cannot take action.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE CHANGE YOUR BRAIN FOUNDATION AND WHY YOU CREATED IT?

DA: Our mission at Change Your Brain Foundation is to end mental illness by creating a revolution in brain health. Let me explain what that means.

Mental illness affects us all. Either you’ve personally struggled, or you love someone who has. The incidence of mental health problems is skyrocketing despite the pharmaceutical revolution. Too often, psychiatric medications don’t work.  The brain imaging work we do at Amen Clinics— including over 250,000 brain scans—shows why. Most psychiatric problems are not mental health issues at all. Rather, they are brain health issues that steal people’s minds. But psychiatry remains the only medical specialty that rarely looks at the organ it treats – the brain. I want to change that. Looking at the brain with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans helps us see if the brain is overactive or underactive or if it has a toxic appearance. This helps psychiatrists ask better questions to find out why. For example, is it due to a past head injury, an infection like Lyme disease, or excessive alcohol use? Getting to the root causes of your mental health symptoms is the key to feeling better faster. I know that not everyone has access to one of our 11 nationwide clinics, or perhaps they can’t afford it.

That’s why my wife, Tana, and I created the Change Your Brain Foundation to support funding for treatment for people in need, cutting-edge brain-imaging research, and brain health educational programs. The foundation is helping us spread the message that mental health is brain health. It also provides scholarships for people in need to get brain scans and treatment through Amen Clinics.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN THE CHANGE YOUR BRAIN FOUNDATION, AND WHY SHOULD OTHER PEOPLE ALSO GET INVOLVED?

JW: I have a deep passion for helping those who struggle with mental health and or addiction, as that was me years ago. I was lost, scared, full of shame, and didn’t see a way out. However, through hard work, determination, and support, I was able to make it through. I want to be a beacon of hope for those who are lost and don’t know where to turn. That’s why I joined forces with Dr. Amen and the Change Your Brain Foundation. We are focused on prevention,

education, research, and solutions. We aim to end mental illness by creating a revolution in brain health. I believe it’s imperative that others get involved, as we are in the midst of a mental health crisis. Suicide and overdoses are at an all-time high, and more than one in four people around the world suffer from mental health disorders.

HOW CAN BRAIN HEALTH IMPACT MENTAL HEALTH?

DA: Our brain-imaging work with SPECT scans shows that having a brain that works too hard or that doesn’t work hard enough is associated with mental health conditions. When your brain is healthy, you’re more likely to be mentally balanced. When your brain is troubled—for any reason—you’re more likely to have trouble with your mental health.

WHENEVER PEOPLE SHARE THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES WITH MENTAL HEALTH WITH THE PUBLIC, IT CAN HELP WHOEVER SEES THEM FEEL LESS ALONE IN THEIR MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN THAT SO FAR IN YOUR OWN LIFE?

JW: I think one of the most valuable things people can do is share their experiences, strength, and hope. I always say by expressing vulnerability, we create humility and allow others to connect and know they are not alone. That’s why I try to share my experience as often as I can, to let people know there’s a way out.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU INCORPORATE INTO YOUR DAILY LIFE THAT WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

JW: I always say consistency and structure create safety. That’s why I have a daily routine, as it keeps me in check. When I wake up, I do a morning meditation, read my Bible, pray, and make a gratitude list of three things—not only what I’m grateful for but why. I eat a healthy breakfast, spend time with my kids, and then go to the gym. Throughout the day, I pause and pray and try to be of service to others when I can. At the end of my day, I do an inventory, not only on the areas I can improve upon but also on the areas I did well. This allows me to close out my day and start tomorrow fresh.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH?

JW: I think the biggest misconception about mental health is that it implies weakness, flaws, moral failings, or a lack of willpower. In reality, mental health issues are multifaceted and primarily related to brain health.

DA: The biggest myth about mental health is that it’s all in your mind. This notion leads people to feel like their mental health problems are a character flaw, moral failing, or lack of willpower. Our work with SPECT shows that these are brain-based issues. This helps people see their symptoms as medical, not moral, and it offers greater hope for healing. Another common myth is that all mental health conditions are single or simple disorders. Brain imaging shows that each condition has multiple types and requires its own targeted treatment plan. For example, giving everybody with depression the same treatment might help some people, but it can also make other people worse. To get the

most effective treatment for depression, anxiety, or ADHD, for example, you need to know your type.

CAN YOU SHARE WHAT CHANGE YOUR BRAIN FOUNDATION HAS IN STORE FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?

JW: The Change Your Brain Foundation always has amazing initiatives to increase awareness and education, as well as provide scholarships to those in need. Currently, we have over 20 research projects underway, and we have created and partnered on multiple educational programs. The latest collaboration was with Dr. Oz and his foundation, HealthCorps. We created the “ANTS” program (Automatic Negative Thoughts), which helps our youth address negativity, low mood, lack of motivation, low energy, anxiousness, strained relationships, unrelenting stress, and feeling overwhelmed—all challenges our teens face.

Our work together has already impacted over 1,500 teens in Southern California. Lastly, our goal for this year is to provide over 100 scholarships for full evaluations. This includes a comprehensive assessment, a brain scan, a diagnosis, and a treatment plan with multiple follow-up sessions.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IF YOU COULD GIVE OUR READERS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH?

DA: Love your brain. If people cared as much about their brains as they do their physical appearance, they would be so much healthier and happier.

JW: Just know you are not alone. You are loved, and you are worth fighting for. Simply reach out and ask for help. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, l and you can change! Remember, your greatest deficits can also become your greatest assets.

VISITING THE KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL

Summer Calls For Road Trips

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LANEY

Summer is the perfect time for a road trip. The warm breeze and sunshine practically beg you to hit the open road.  But where to? Luckily, many great destinations are fairly close to Nashville. One of my favorite places for a road trip is Bardstown, Kentucky. Kentucky is more than just bluegrass and horses, although there is no shortage of either. It has beautiful scenery, trails, caves, a national park- and my favorite- bourbon.

Traveling the bourbon trail in search of the legendary brown water is just two-and-a-half hours from Nashville.  When you pull into Bardstown off the Bluegrass Parkway, the sweet, yeasty smell of the distilleries is in the air, and there is no mistaking what makes this town famous.  Each distillery has a history, a culture, and a story.  But where to start? Here are a few of my favorites, but like a handpicked single barrel, savor the experience and try not to water it down by doing too much.

Heaven Hill Distillery makes Elijah Craig, Parkers Heritage, Old Fitzgerald, Larceny, and many other big-name bourbons. They have a state-of-the-art visitors center with a variety of tasting experiences.  My favorite is the You Do Bourbon Tour. First up is a bourbon class and tasting to educate your palate.  Then, you can go into the lab to bottle your own from start to finish.  You can even draw cartoons on the labels!  As you exit out the gift shop (of course) pick up some bourbon pear preserves, bourbon cherries, or bourbon ice cream. While bourbon is the obvious draw at the Willet Distillery, reservations at their restaurant, The Bar at Willet, are a must. The restaurant itself is fantastic, and the egg salad

is worth the rave reviews—a true cult classic. Fun fact: There are a few distillery cats that act as the welcoming committee and escorts. Wander the grounds and meet a few (mostly napping) throughout.

Technically in Frankfurt and not Bardstown, Buffalo Trace Distillery is my favorite of all.  Besides being one of the only dog-friendly distilleries, they have beautiful grounds, friendly employees, and free tastings!  Every morning, they announce which of the four possible allocated bottles are available for purchase in the gift shop (Blanton’s, Weller, Eagle Rare, and E.H. Taylor Small Batch).  Tours are best booked in advance, but if you just walk up, make sure to ask, as usually they can fit you in! If you aren’t lucky enough to score a tour, you can still do a free guided tasting upstairs.  I highly recommend this!  Their grounds are gorgeous, and the gift shop is a serious challenge to my budget.  Watch their website for one of their special events.  It’s worth the price tag, trust me.

This cute town has dozens of great distilleries, local restaurants, and antique shops. If you really want to get into the spirit (see what I did there?)  you can even stay in an actual bourbon barrel hotel with Bourbon Barrel Retreats.

“EACH DISTILLERY HAS A HISTORY, A CULTURE, AND A STORY… HERE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITES, BUT LIKE A HAND-PICKED SINGLE BARREL, SAVOR THE EXPERIENCE AND TRY NOT TO WATER IT DOWN.”

REAL ESTATE EXTRAORDINAIRE

Explore Local Real Estate With Jamie Shea

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

When it comes to real estate, Jamie Shea is a man who can do it all. An integral part of the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Woodmont Realty team, Jamie has a familiar face, and he may be the man who will help you find your dream home.

Jamie Shea
“Communication is paramount to make sure we are on the same page for what a buyer wants.”

His career started in the late 1990s as an appraiser. However, after years of gaining experience and becoming an expert in the field, he decided to make himself even more well-rounded in the real estate world and get his real estate license.

“I wanted to diversify my business a little bit, and it never hurts to try to wear two hats,” Jamie explains. “I got my real estate license in 2006 and joined this company, and over the years, I have transitioned to real estate as my primary business. I still carry my appraiser license, but my main focus is helping buyers and sellers. I do feel that being active in both disciplines makes me a bit more well-rounded in real estate.”

Since starting in 2006, he has worked hard with Berkshire Hathaway, where he’s helped countless families buy and sell their homes. His unique background

in real estate allows him to spot a good offer for his clients, regardless of the market's conditions.

“When I walk through a home with my clients, if I see something that could potentially be an issue, I will tend to point it out. I may say something like, ‘Hey, you might want to be careful or be aware of this,” he says. “Obviously, I always encourage them to get a home inspection, and my intention is not to scare them away. Buyers are going to fall in love with the house, but I want them to be objective about it as well because it's a big investment. My goal is to make sure my clients are making the most informed decision financially as well as what best fits their lifestyle.”

With everything happening in the housing market right now, there can be a lot of unknowns. Jamie has evaluated homes and seen what is and isn’t a good deal.

One of the benefits of working with a company like Berkshire Hathaway Woodmont Realty is that they will ensure you are getting the best deal possible.

“Sometimes people don’t realize that we have a great company backing us,” Jamie says. “Real estate can be competitive, but we are very much family-like here.”

Jamie isn’t afraid to be honest with his clients. He wants them to understand the process and help them get the best deal, whether working with buyers or sellers. With the current market, buyers and sellers may not know the best way to go about the process. One of his biggest pieces of advice for buyers is to get pre-approved.

“It is important to have conversations with your buyer clients about what they are looking for as well as having everything in place for when they find that just right home. Communication is paramount to make sure we are on the same page for what a buyer wants.”

Jamie explains. “In today’s market, it is important to communicate with buyers and sellers. In the recent past, with the interest rates being as low as they were, homes were not on the market long, and sellers were receiving multiple offers. Those days are done for now. The benefit for a buyer is that there is

“My goal is to make sure my clients are making the most informed decision financially as well as what best fits their lifestyle.”

more room for negotiations. For a seller, we will have the conversation of current market conditions, where their home sits in the market, and items that need to be done to get their home sold. Whether it is completing updates, such as painting and landscaping, or even something as simple as cleaning and staging the home.”

His dedication to his clients goes beyond closing deals. He strives to make the buying and

selling experience as ideal and stress-free as possible. Working with someone knowledgeable in real estate like Jamie can make all the difference in the always-changing real estate market. Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or looking to downsize, Jamie is the person you can rely on for expert guidance and exceptional service.

DOWNSIZE YOUR HOME, NOT YOUR STANDARDS

A CAREFREE LIFESTYLE

When homeowners are looking to downsize their properties, they really don’t want to downsize their high standard of living. “They still want a really nice kitchen and top-notch finishes,” says Gabrielle Dodson, a Realtor® with COMPASS. “They want a good-sized primary bedroom, bathroom, and pantry.”

“MOST

level with dual walk-in closets and custom-tiled showers. Three baths in total make up almost 1,450 square feet of space with wood and tile flooring.

Instead of a yard to maintain, there is a private covered rooftop deck with storage space and great views of Oak Hill. Another unique amenity is an ele-

SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOODS DON'T

OFFER THIS LEVEL OF ACCESSIBILITY.”

Basically, she explains, they want larger spaces where they need it, but not where they don't. They’re not looking for larger secondary bedrooms or huge bonus/playrooms, but instead want a big open kitchen with a seating/ breakfast area, maybe a family room and perhaps even an elevator to lessen the burden of stairs. They're used to top-of-the-line appliances and don’t necessarily want to give those up.

Fortunately for these discriminating homeowners, new luxury townhouses are now available at 5611 Franklin Pike in Brentwood that check all of these boxes and more. As of the end of May, several of the units have sold, and only four more are available.

One of them, unit #105, is a showstopper. The open floor plan living room, kitchen, and dining room with modern designer finishes is just gorgeous, and those, along with a pantry and a halfbath, are all on the first level. It has two en-suite bedrooms on the second

vator that goes directly from the private gated garage (where residents have two parking spaces) to the main level of each unit. No hallways or corridors to walk down to get to your front door.

The convenient location means there are lots of places to walk or bike. “Most suburban neighborhoods don't offer this level of accessibility,” she says. These homes are also near restaurants and other conveniences, including grocery stores and pharmacies. “You're still in Brentwood, but of course, you're right near Green Hills and Davidson County, closer to the airport, and that walkability is a great amenity, especially as we get more people moving here from out of town.” No more worrying about rush hour traffic to grab a bite to eat or pick up a prescription.

The reasonable HOA fees include water, maintenance, and trash pickup, so there’s no need to worry about these mundane tasks. Maintenance is a thing of the past. “It seems like when people

retire, they travel a lot more and don't want to be tied down to landscaping and other maintenance of larger homes anymore,” says Gabrielle.

Since many people considering this type of living are always in town, there’s another benefit to consider. “Maybe they're here six months out of a year, or maybe they travel twice a month to different places,” she says. “So, these townhomes can be short-term rentals through Airbnb or VRBO®. Owners can rent out their units as much or as little as they want, and they’ve got a potential cash-flowing asset.”

Gabrielle, who has lived in Brentwood for almost 30 years and is a graduate of Brentwood High School, is very familiar with the Middle Tennessee market. She enjoys using her real estate knowledge and her business skills (she has an MBA) to help people find exactly what they need at different points in their lives.

“It's about finding that perfect fit for people,” she says. “You meet with clients, listen to them, and figure out what they're looking for or what they may not know they're looking for by asking the right questions and having conversations.”

“IT'S

ABOUT FINDING THAT PERFECT FIT FOR PEOPLE.”

This type of building, she says, is the first of its kind in the area. “Once this concept becomes a bit more familiar and available, it's going to resonate with families looking to make such a change. People will look for properties that offer these types of amenities and potential revenue-producing opportunities.” Safety is important to people, and living in Brentwood provides that peace of mind.

Since there’s nothing to maintain and everything is brand new, there’s a lot more time for fun. When not traveling, homeowners can enjoy shopping and dining right outside their front door or by driving into nearby Green Hills or Cool Springs. They can also take advantage of community amenities such as pools, tennis access, pickleball, or one of the many country clubs in the area.

“They can enjoy a carefree lifestyle,” says Gabrielle.

HOW STUART DEMING AND HIS TEAM “CREATE ACTIONABLE CONTENT TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES” THROUGH XPLR.NASH

For many, adventure and exploration go hand in hand with passports, foreign languages, or incredibly exotic areas of nature. Stuart Deming of XPLR.NASH, however, wants people to think of exploration in a local, everyday way.

For six years, the team at XPLR.NASH has been highlighting small businesses and creating content for those who want to explore Nashville! Their goal is for you to stay invested in local communities and see mom-and-pop businesses thrive. They have curated thousands of videos on how to experience the city. The brand has racked up millions of views in a niche market, capturing the essence of Nashville. Stuart is a Christian, a husband, a dad, and an explorer. With

over 15 years in hospitality, he’s worn many professional hats in restaurants, hotels, and beyond. He’s had the privilege of giving tours of Nashville and middle Tennessee to over 20,000 individuals, covering everything from food and music to adventure and history. Stuart has always loved exploration. He grew up in rural New York and was constantly outside. Between building forts, chasing friends, and exploring the woods, He truly fell in love with nature. He remembers reading the book, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. In short, this classic novel is about a kid whose plane crashed in the Canadian wilderness and his survival in the time after. Ever since then, the love of exploration has been as permanent as the beard on Stuart's face.

“I LOVE HIGHLIGHTING SMALL BUSINESSES AND ENTREPRENEURS WHO TAKE RISKS. I LOVE TO TELL A STORY AND SHOW PEOPLE’S HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION. IF WE CAN HELP BUSINESSES THRIVE, GROW, ETC., WE WIN!”

In his collegiate years, Stuart was able to spend a semester in Italy. On a schedule that included three-day weekends, he was able to tour the nearby countryside and explore each unique city, town, and culture. He loved it so much that he raised money after school to go and help others experience what he lived. This season of life shaped Stuart as a Christian and as a man more than many other seasons in life. So why Nashville? One of Stuart’s first professional positions was at a residency in town over a young adult ministry. To pay bills, he would Uber and Lyft on his time off. He was one of the FIRST drivers in town. Over the next couple of years, he racked up over 250,000 miles on his car and loved telling stories and seeing the awe in other’s faces as they saw a waterfall, the Parthenon, or even Broadway for the first time. “I love highlighting small businesses and entrepreneurs who take risks. I love to tell a story and show people’s hard work and determination. If we can help businesses thrive, grow, etc., we win!” As a new parent, Stuart can’t wait to show his son these unique experiences that he didn’t get to experience until his mid-twenties. You can explore Nashville with Stuart by following their pages on Instagram or YouTube specifically.

https://linktr.ee/xplr.nash will take you to their Linktree with all their information included. The XPLR. NASH team is, for the first time, announcing international trips with their crew! In 2025, go see Italy, fall foliage in Montana, and Christmas in Germany with Stuart.

IT’S TIKI TIME!

"IF YOU CAN’T GET TO PARADISE, I’LL BRING IT TO YOU.”

It’s July. It’s Summer. It’s hot. It’s tiki time! It’s time for a high-flying cocktail concoction to replenish your spirits this Summer. It’s time to get on that flight and explore somewhere new for a paradise vacation or even a staycation with the Jet Pilot cocktail.

“If you can’t get to paradise, I’ll bring it to you,” said Donn Beach, the inventor of the Test Pilot the cocktail that preceded the fashionable Jet Pilot. The Test Pilot cocktail was invented by Beach in 1941 and preceded what we now know as the Jet Pilot. During this time of exploration and aviation, there were many variations of cocktails that sensationalized your taste buds. There was and is the Astronaut and the Space Pilot, but the Jet Pilot is the recipe we suggest you try. The Jet Pilot was created by tiki bar owner Steve Crane in 1958 at the Beverly Hills Luau bar and became a celebrated drink at tiki bars.

When replicating this frozen drink, make sure you don’t blend the ingredients too much so the effect has a crushed ice sensation that packs a punch. Or, if you’d rather, have it super chilled. You can crush the ice more as preferred to have a summertime slushy with a twist. Pack your bags and get on the next flight to paradise.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1-ounce overproof Jamaican rum

• 3/4-ounce overproof demerara rum (such as Plantation OFTD)

• 3/4-ounce gold rum

• 1/2-ounce grapefruit juice that is freshly squeezed

• 3/4-ounce lime juice that is freshly squeezed

• 1/2-ounce cinnamon syrup

• 1/2-ounce falernum

• 1 Dash absinthe

• 1 Dash Angostura bitters

• Garnish with a maraschino cherry and mint, a twist of lime, or with pineapple wings, if desired

STEPS :

STEP 1: Add all ingredients into a blender with a cup of crushed ice and blend on high until combined but not smooth, about 5 seconds. This allows the drink to have a crushed ice texture that is great for the summer heat

STEP 2: Pour into a double old-fashioned glass or have it in a whole pineapple with a tiki umbrella too!

STEP 3: Garnish as desired. Get creative and make a fruit plane to compliment the drink or flavor with a cherry and fresh mint leaves

The result is a satisfyingly flavorful mix of fruit and spice. The cinnamon compliments the varieties of rums and sends the tastebuds soaring. The combinations of rum give this drink an elevated kick. The crushed ice keeps it cool and refreshing. The cherry garnish creates a sweet and juicy finishing note. Try this treat while on your excursions or for your local explorations. The Nashville bars Chopper and Fox Bar & Cocktail Club have their own spin on this classy and timeless solace. This season is a fabulous time to try new places and explore! Cheers to the next exploration! The skies are the limit!
