The Investment Issue

Welcome to our Investment Issue.

Depending on the context, investing can take on many different meanings. By definition, investment is devoting time, effort, energy, or finances to a specific thing with the expectation of a worthwhile result.  While many people associate investing with money, there are countless other ways to invest that are just as valuable. You can invest in your relationships by maintaining meaningful connections with friends and family, invest in your community by giving back and making a difference, or invest in yourself by prioritizing personal growth, self-care, and well-being.

Unlike instant gratification, true investment is a gradual process. It requires patience, consistency, and dedication, but the rewards are worth it. The impact of your investments—whether in people, hobbies, or personal development—will often go far beyond what you could imagine.

In this issue, we explore the many unique and fulfilling ways you can invest. I hope that as you turn each page, you’ll feel inspired to make intentional investments in the areas of your life that matter most. After all, the best investments bring joy to your life and the lives of those around you.

Brentwood Lifestyle’s Q&A

with Southern Oak Wealth

Are you a fiduciary, and what does that mean?

Yes, we are. As fiduciaries, we are legally and ethically obligated to act in the best interests of our clients at all times. This responsibility includes prioritizing our clients’ needs above our own, avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining transparency, conducting thorough analysis and due diligence to provide well-informed advice, and adhering to the highest standards of professional conduct.

What are some common mistakes investors make?

Several common mistakes come to mind. One is concentrating investments in a limited number of stocks or a single sector, which can lead to significant volatility and drastic fluctuations in portfolio value. Another mistake is being overly reactive rather than proactive. While it is impossible to time the market perfectly, having a well-structured financial plan with strategic approaches can help investors capitalize on opportunities as they arise and remain well-positioned for necessary adjustments. Additionally, paying excessive attention to sensationalized news—whether positive or negative—can be detrimental, as such headlines are often designed to attract viewership or clicks rather than provide objective financial insight.

There is never a shortage of news about the markets or the economy. How do you determine what is important to focus on and what to disregard?

Determining what information is relevant is an ongoing process that requires continuous learning and adaptation while remaining grounded in sound judgment. Having a knowledgeable and experienced team to consult with is also essential for analyzing financial developments and making well-informed decisions.

What services does Southern Oak Wealth provide?

Southern Oak Wealth assists families and business owners in developing both short- and long-term financial plans tailored to their specific goals. We actively manage and monitor our clients’ investments, maintaining regular communication to ensure that any changes in their financial situation or life circumstances are appropriately addressed. Our mission is to serve as a trusted resource for all financial discussions our clients may need to have, extending this support to future generations as well.

INTRODUCING ROW 94 WHISKEY

DIERKS BENTLEY’S CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED NEW WHISKEY, ROW 94, IS OFFICIALLY ON THE SHELVES AND AVAILABLE TO ENJOY NOW!

Despite his busy schedule, country music star Dierks Bentley took the time to sit down with Brentwood Lifestyle to talk all things Row 94 and share his exciting plans for the rest of 2025.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, CONGRATULATIONS ON ROW 94! TELL ME ALL ABOUT THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND THE BRAND AND HOW IT CAME TO BE.

Thanks! I’m really proud of Row 94, it’s been a long time coming. The name actually comes from a pretty personal place for me. 1994 is the year I moved to Nashville and really started my journey in country music, and ‘Row’ refers to Music Row in Nashville (and also Whiskey Row.) So, Row 94 is a bit of a nod to where it all started, and it represents that sense of home and the journey for me.

WHAT SETS ROW 94 APART FROM OTHER WHISKEYS?

What really makes Row 94 stand out is the balance we’ve achieved. I wanted something that’s smooth but still has a lot of character… a bourbon that you can sip and enjoy straight but also works really well in cocktails. We worked with some amazing people in the industry to make sure the flavor profile was just right. It’s rich, it’s full-bodied, but it’s not overwhelming. The complexity is there, but it’s easy to drink. It’s approachable and has a little something for everyone. That balance is key, and I think people are really responding to it.

GOING

IN, WHAT QUALITIES DID YOU WANT THIS WHISKEY TO HAVE?

When we started out, I really wanted a bourbon that had depth, something that would stand up to the test of time but still be smooth enough for any occasion.  It was also important to me for it to be a 4-year-old Kentucky Straight bourbon, because that’s what I myself drink. My partner wanted it to be under $40 a bottle, so it was all a balancing act… but I really think we’ve created a topshelf bourbon that doesn’t break the bank.

TALK ME THROUGH THE DESIGN OF THE BOTTLE.

I wanted the design to be classic and timeless, so we went with a sleek, simple look and clean lines. Some of my long-time fans probably remember the thunderbird from the cover of Riser, it’s something I’ve always had a connection to and symbolizes strength, resilience, and optimism. That’s what I wanted Row 94 to stand for. We all work hard, we all go through struggles, but there’s this belief in making the most of each day and finding joy along the way. I think that’s what Row 94 captures. An appreciation for life and the people who live it with heart and purpose. It’s about celebrating the little things, whether it’s a great song, a great moment, or a great glass of whiskey.

WHAT DOES THE SUPPORT YOU’VE GARNERED FROM FANS AND WHISKEY LOVERS MEAN TO YOU AS YOU’VE EMBARKED ON THIS NEW ENDEAVOR?

It means the world to me. I’ve been lucky enough to have incredible fans who’ve supported me through my music career, and to see that same love and support coming through for Row 94 has been amazing. Whiskey brings people together, and when I see people sharing a bottle of Row 94 or talking about how much they love it, it’s a great feeling. It’s not just about making a good product, it’s about creating an experience. And knowing that people are enjoying it makes all the hard work worth it.

ASIDE FROM DRINKING IT STRAIGHT – BECAUSE IT IS THAT GOOD - WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE DRINKS TO MAKE WITH ROW 94?

When I'm on the road making music, I like to keep it simple (and usually in a solo cup.) But if I'm mixing it up, a good WithCo Old Fashioned is always a favorite.

BETWEEN YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE OF BEING A SUCCESSFUL, TOURING MUSICIAN TO OWNING YOUR OWN BAR ON BROADWAY, TO NOW CURATING YOUR VERY OWN WHISKEY, YOU SEEM TO ALWAYS HAVE SOMETHING FUN UP YOUR SLEEVE! ANY OTHER THINGS IN THE WORKS YOU CAN SHARE?

Absolutely! I’ve got some exciting stuff coming up. I released a new song and video for “She Hates Me” in February and dropped a single with one of my favorite new artists, Stephen Wilson Jr., called “Cold Beer Can” in March. This summer, I’ll be hitting the road with Zach Top and The Band Loula—I’m pumped to perform some new tunes live and see my fans again.

A RITE of Spring

ENJOY A DAY OF RACING AND MORE WHILE MAKING UNFORGETTABLE MEMORIES

Known as Nashville’s “Rite of Spring,” the Iroquois Steeplechase, sponsored by Bank of America, is a beloved tradition that started back in 1941 when the first race was held. It’s named after the 19th-century horse Iroquois owned by Pierre Lorillard, the first American-bred horse to win the Epsom Derby (1881), the preeminent race in England.

The mission of the Iroquois Steeplechase, to be held on May 10th this year at the scenic Percy Warner Park, is to manage and produce an annual world-class horse race. That mission has been successful year after year as it continues to be a cornerstone of Nashville's social calendar, drawing over 25,000 spectators annually. While the majority of participants come from Middle Tennessee, this iconic event also attracts people from all over the United States and from around the world.

"We're thrilled to celebrate the 84th anniversary of the Iroquois Steeplechase and expect another incredible turnout," said Dwight Hall, Chairman of the Iroquois Steeplechase Race Committee (and 1977 winner).  "The excitement of Bruton Street-US’s Snap Decision victory last year has continued to energize our fans, and we're ready for another fun day filled with horse racing, food, fashion, and music. With limited tickets available, we encourage fans to purchase tickets early."

Group and individual tickets for the race are available, and people of all ages come out to celebrate and not only view the race itself but to also take part in the myriad of activities that encompass the day.

For 2025, each ticket grants access to vendor shops, food trucks, tailgating areas, and the lively Steeplechase Central, which allows fans to fully immerse themselves in a day of racing and entertainment. It’s the perfect event for making memories with friends and family.

Horse racing is a popular international event, and the Iroquois Steeplechase is the only one in Nashville. The event features several horse races of varying distances on grass courses leading up to the featured three-mile hurdle stakes Iroquois with a $250,000 purse.

Just like with other sporting events, tailgating is a great way to start the day. It’s an opportunity to gather with otherswhether that’s a large group of family and friends or a smaller, more intimate gathering. Kids aged 12 and under are free in all tailgating areas, and there are even designated areas for families with young children. For example, while the Centerfield location tends to have a livelier, college-aged crowd, couples with young children may prefer other tailgating areas for a more family-friendly experience.

Other options include the Midfield Tailgating that is close to the action, or the Stirrup Club which allows premier track views. RVs are also welcome additions in designated spots, and private tents are available as well. These various tailgating choices allow attendees to customize the race day experience. But regardless of the one chosen, each provides access to the best of race day.

This year, the Hall of Fame Inductee will be Bruton Street US, which has won the grade one Calvin Houghland Iroquois five times in the past years. In an exciting finish to the Calvin Houghland Iroquois Steeplechase Grade 1 Stakes Race, Bruton Street-US' amazing 10-year-old, Snap Decision, clinched his third win at this race! The horse made history as only the second one to win the Calvin Houghland Iroquois this many times.

Many horses return year after year, and it’s believed that Snap Decision, who has more than $1 million in career earnings, will return to give others a run for their money. Speaking of money, the Iroquois Steeplechase isn’t just all about fun. The race has a huge philanthropic purpose too, with a legacy of giving back to the local community.

Sponsored this year by Bank of America, it’s run by the Volunteer State Horsemen's Foundation, a nonprofit 501c3 organization, which has proudly raised over $11 million for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Additional beneficiaries include The Foundation for the Horse, with a mission to improve the health and welfare of horses, and Friends of Warner Parks that focuses on the preservation of the Percy Warner Park grounds. All improvements to the Iroquois Steeplechase grounds are paid for by the Foundation from race proceeds and provides year-round benefits and enhancements for the Equestrian Center at the park.

Building on last year's success, the Iroquois Steeplechase promises even more excitement this year. The usual perfect weather and vibrant social atmosphere provide an amazing and enhanced race day experience.

STAY ON TOP OF EAR HEALTH TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE HEARING

HEAR WITH CONFIDENCE

As an audiologist, Dr. Rebecca Grome of Ears 4 U Hearing Services has seen the damage that can be done by not taking care of ears properly. While many of us go in for yearly physicals and eye exams, we often forget about checking in on our audio health as well.

Ears 4 U, the practice she bought in 2018 in Berry Hill, does custom hearing protection that is molded to your ears for your specific needs. While there are also plenty of over-the-counter hearing protection options, she says the simple and inexpensive foam ear-

MANY YOUNGER PEOPLE HAVE DAMAGED HEARING FROM WEARING AIRPODS, ATTENDING CONCERTS AND FREQUENTING LOUD PLACES SUCH AS RESTAURANTS AND BARS.

“Invest in your hearing by getting annual hearing testing,” she says. “I'm very well aware that people don't want to come see me because they don't want to admit that something's wrong, and hearing loss has always been associated with the aging process.”

Now, it’s more important than ever to protect our hearing from damage, and if that damage is already done, to stop it from getting worse and find solutions in order to hear properly.

“There was a huge study that came out in the Lancet [medical journal] last year that talked about the correlation between untreated hearing loss and cognitive decline,” says Dr. Grome.

Many younger people, she explains, have damaged hearing from wearing AirPods, attending concerts and frequenting loud places such as restaurants and bars. “There are some changes you can make to help protect your ears, and number one is wearing hearing protection in high-noise situations.”

plugs work great. The problem with these is they are sometimes hard to get in the ear canal. She also recommends Loop earplugs, which are very popular because they're cute and come in fun colors.

In addition to hearing loss, tinnitus (or ringing in the ears) can negatively affect people’s quality of life. Dr. Grome will address and educate her patients on what can be done for this condition. “I specialize in tinnitus and tinnitus retraining and we carry a few specialty products for this issue. Historically, we have had to rely on sound therapy, but the big news is that I was recently approved to offer the Lenire® Tinnitus Device, which features a tongue tip and a set of headphones for at home habituation.  We're seeing fantastic results with it.”

There are only about 20 approved Lenire practitioners in the country and she’s very thankful to be one of them so she can have this treatment available for her patients.

At the new Brentwood location, which she opened in September of 2024, she has a lot of tinnitus patients, many of whom are veterans, while the original location in Nashville caters to a large musician population. “A lot of musicians are scared to death that they're going to lose their hearing and then they won't be able to do what they love to do. So, it's really wonderful working with them, and it’s reassuring to them that they have a team of people on their side.

“We can discuss their typical sound environment or take measurements of their noise levels and come up with a plan of how long they can be in that environment safely before hearing protection is required.”

Just because there’s damage doesn’t always mean there’s a need for hearing aids. Every patient and situation is different, and she and her team will assess what’s needed.

Today, Dr. Grome believes people are more educated and more conscious of preventing hearing issues, especially parents of young kids. Dr. Grome, who lives in Brentwood with her husband Nick, is herself a mother of two children. Their daughter Naoma is in kindergarten, and their son Perry is in first grade. “They're very happy and very funny, and it’s just so nice to work close to home,” she says.”

“I

SPECIALIZE IN TINNITUS AND TINNITUS RETRAINING...”

Her family was a big impetus in buying the practice. “I was a hearing aid manufacturer rep for seven years, and I covered a very, very large territory, mainly in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. Once I had children, I realized that I didn’t want to miss out on their childhood and needed to find something that was a little less travel-heavy. I had learned so much when I was a rep about how people run their businesses, and I wanted the freedom of running my own office.”

Now, she has two! To make an appointment with Dr. Grome to speak about your ear health, visit their website.

from LOST to FOUND

Kelly Jean Torres, musician, singer-songwriter, and mother, has written a memoir on her life as a foster child adoptee and where she is now in her new book Saving the Lost Girl: A Memoir of Healing.

Within these pages, Torres explores her life as a foster child and adoptee who went through trauma and abuse. The story highlights why working through pain is essential and healing to the soul and one’s future. The goal of her story, shared with others, is to encourage and inspire those who may also have fallen victim to pain in this way. Torres has invested in herself and her future life by “untangling the pain” from her past.

Torres was separated from her birth mother at 10 months old. She and her sisters were placed in foster care and were then adopted later by the same foster family despite common knowledge that the foster parents were abusing them. Torres’s biological family could not care for her or her siblings because of mental illness and addiction. The separation from Torres’ birth mother and extended biological family created developmental trauma leading to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

CONTINUED >

“Saving the Lost Girl: A Memoir of Healing” takes its readers along a road of self-healing

Torres also has a younger brother who was placed with a different family. Later in life, Torres was able to reach out to her biological family.

Through the hard times, Torres relied upon music to soothe and heal herself. She loves to sing and write music as well as poems. She moved to Nashville from Chicago in 2012 to pursue her musical dreams.

Now Torres has a family of her own: her husband, daughter, son, and a yellow lab named Butter. She is happy with where she is. She has saved herself from her past, investing in her future, her family, and her dreams. She is proud of herself for being a good mother and “maintaining stability after so much chaos.”

Torres shows through her example that no matter how much pain we go through, we are resilient and brave. We can continue to move forward and heal.

As a voice for healing, Torres hopes for change in the process of adoption and fostering. Fostering and adoption should be child-centered and not so much parent-focused, with the child’s needs being paramount. Torres believes continuing education in trauma-informed care for foster and adoptive parents should be mandatory.

This book will be available on April 15th.  It can be found at Landmark Booksellers in downtown Franklin, Amazon, Barnes and Noble online, and Books a Million online.

“People should read no matter what walk of life because reading stories different than ours [creates] empathy and compassion,” said Torres.

In the future, Torres hopes to write more and continue her music.

INVEST IN YOUR GREENS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY

Boost your health by adding a generous serving of fresh greens to your daily diet. While both cooked and raw vegetables offer health benefits, consuming them raw often provides the most nutrients. Raw greens are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential vitamins, helping to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of disease.

DANDELION GREENS:

Dandelion greens are a nutritious and easy addition to any meal, perfect for salads or cooked dishes. They are rich in vitamins A, C, K, chlorophyll, and fiber, making them a great choice for digestion and overall health. Their light flavor and texture enhance salads and sandwiches.

BROCCOLI:

Broccoli is often hailed as a nutritional powerhouse, packed with a variety of vitamins and minerals that support overall health. Known for being high in vitamins A, C, and K, it also contains important minerals like potassium, iron, and calcium. In addition, it’s a rich source of beta-carotene, flavonoids, and fiber. Whether raw or cooked, broccoli is an excellent choice for immune system support, making it one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables available.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS:

Brussels sprouts are a highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable, known for their vitamin C, K, and folate content, as well as carotenoids and fiber. These vegetables can be shaved, sliced, sautéed, boiled, or grilled, offering a range of flavors from mild to bitter, depending on preparation.

KALE:

Kale is loaded with essential nutrients such as vitamins C, B6, E, K, and manganese. It contains twice as much selenium as spinach and is an excellent source of calcium. Kale’s unique properties help bind to cholesterol and lower oxalate levels, which promotes calcium absorption and makes it suitable for those prone to kidney stones. Additionally, it provides eye health benefits, thanks to lutein, and its disease-fighting properties make it a great addition to salads, smoothies, and more.

ARTICHOKES:

Artichokes are not only delicious but also packed with fiber, which aids in digestion. They are a great source of plant protein, potassium, and antioxidants like polyphenols. Artichokes also provide essential nutrients, including vitamins C, K, folate, magnesium, and B vitamins.

ASPARAGUS:

Asparagus is versatile and can be enjoyed grilled, sautéed, baked, or even raw. Packed with vitamins C, E, B, K, folate, and copper, it’s a great source of fiber. It also helps lower cholesterol and provides a variety of antioxidants that aid in healing. Asparagus is a perfect side dish that complements both light and robustly flavored meals.

SPINACH:

Spinach is a popular green known for its mild flavor and impressive nutritional profile. Rich in vitamins A, C, K, as well as magnesium, potassium, and iron, spinach is great for overall health. It also provides antioxidants that support eye health and includes calcium for stronger bones. However, because spinach has a higher oxalate content, it should be consumed in moderation by those with a history of kidney stones.

Each year, 25,000 people gather at the Iroquois Steeplechase racecourse at Percy Warner Park for an unforgettable day of thrilling horse racing, vibrant celebrations, and stunning fashion. Purchase your tickets now and join us on May 10, 2025 in the Royal 615 Lounge, Hunt Club or Tailgating areas!

MAXIMIZE YOUR HOME’S POTENTIAL

Increase your home’s value and appeal to a wide range of buyers

The real estate market remains strong for sellers, but that doesn’t mean homeowners can forgo making updates before listing their property. To secure the best possible offer and a quick closing, sellers need to invest time and effort into preparing their homes for the market. Thoughtful updates and strategic staging can make all the difference in attracting buyers and maximizing value.

Sold in Brentwood, TN
“When selling a home, it’s important to be mindful of updates that are less taste-specific.”

“When selling a home, it’s important to be mindful of updates that are less taste-specific,” says Realtor® Paula Hinegardner of The Paula Hinegardner Group of Keller Williams® in Franklin. “The way you live in a house is different from the way you sell a house.”

Many homeowners fill their spaces with personal touches - family photos, sentimental décor, and unique design choices. While these elements make a home feel special, they can limit a buyer’s ability to picture themselves in the space. That’s why depersonalization is key. Removing personal items, simplifying décor, and creating a neutral, inviting atmosphere helps broaden a home’s appeal.

Beyond depersonalization, sellers should ensure their homes align with current design trends. “Even if something isn’t your personal style, it’s important to create a look that appeals to the masses,”

Paula explains. “A neutral, stylish home will attract more buyers and better offers.”

To help sellers maximize their home’s potential, The Paula Hinegardner Group takes a concierge-style approach to real estate, offering full-service home preparation at no additional cost to clients. “We handle everything - professional staging, design consultations, landscaping, repairs, and deep cleaning,” Paula says. “Whether your home needs a minor refresh or a complete transformation, we take care of the details so you can focus on your next move.”

Unlike traditional real estate teams, Paula’s group consists of a diverse team of professionals, including interior designers, stagers, landscapers, and handymen. “Instead of just having buyer’s agents and listing agents, we provide a full-service experience,” she explains. “We’re a one-stop shop for getting your home market-ready.”

The process begins with a designer consultation, where experts assess the home and recommend updates that will make the biggest impact. They help select market-friendly colors, stylish furnishings, and key enhancements to highlight the home’s best features. If staging is necessary, Paula’s team can bring in furniture and décor to complement the space.

“Different homes require different styles,” she says. “The goal is to enhance the home’s architecture and character while making it as attractive as possible to buyers.”

The level of updates depends on the home’s current condition and the seller’s budget. Some homes may only require simple changes, such as repainting walls, updating light fixtures, or swapping out cabinet hardware. Others may benefit from more extensive renovations, like kitchen or bathroom remodels.

“Painting is the least expensive yet most impactful update you can make,” Paula advises. “Dark colors can make a home feel smaller and outdated, so opt for light, neutral tones. Grays are fading in popularity, and creamy off-whites are the preferred choice now.”

When it comes to larger updates, the kitchen is often the most critical space to focus on. Buyers are looking for open, functional kitchens with highend finishes. Features like quartz countertops, seamless backsplashes, bold lighting, and spacious islands are highly desirable.

“The kitchen is the heart of the home,” she says. “No matter how much seating you have in your house when you entertain, everyone gathers around the kitchen island. That’s why it’s important to make it a showpiece.”

Sold in Nashville, TN
Sold in Brentwood, TN
Sold in Brentwood, TN
“With the right approach, you can create a space that buyers fall in love with - and ultimately, that’s what leads to a successful sale.”

Bathrooms are another key selling point. Buyers favor spa-like features such as frameless glass showers, stand-alone tubs, double vanities with individual mirrors, and ample storage space. Flooring, lighting, and color choices should create a calm, luxurious feel.

Paula encourages sellers to approach home updates with a strategic mindset. “It’s important to make budget-conscious improvements that enhance your home’s value without overspending,” she says. “You don’t want to invest more money than necessary in a home you’re leaving behind.”

Her team helps sellers navigate this process, ensuring that every update adds value and contributes to a faster, more profitable sale. “Our concierge services are designed to take the

stress out of selling,” she says. “We handle the details, so you don’t have to worry about unexpected expenses or overwhelming to-do lists.”.

In today’s market, buyers have high expectations, and homes that are move-in ready tend to sell faster and for higher prices. By making smart updates, staging effectively, and working with an experienced real estate team, sellers can maximize their home’s potential and attract the best possible offers.

“The goal is to present your home in the best possible light,” Paula says. “With the right approach, you can create a space that buyers fall in love with - and ultimately, that’s what leads to a successful sale.”

Monkee's of Brentwood Explains Why It's Important To Invest In Your Jeans

Fast fashion comes and goes, with trends fading as quickly as they emerge. But one wardrobe item remains timeless: a well-made pair of jeans. Unlike trendy pieces that sometimes fall apart after just one season of wear, a quality pair of jeans can last for years, making them one of the most worthwhile investments.

With fashion constantly evolving, how do you determine which jeans are genuinely worth the investment and can blend effortlessly with both trends and timeless pieces?

“Denim never goes out of style,” Amanda Hellman, Monkee’s of Brentwood owner, explains. “It’s known for being sturdy and long-lasting. Denim can also be dressed up or dressed down.”

Monkee’s of Brentwood is a local boutique that offers a wide selection of high-quality jeans and an array of other stylish pieces like dresses, skirts, purses, tops, and even shoes. Shopping in-store allows you to skip the uncertainty of online ordering, giving you the convenience of trying on different styles and finding the perfect fit in person.

However, finding the right pair of jeans isn’t always as simple as it seems. It’s easy to make mistakes when trying on different styles, whether choosing the wrong size, overlooking how the fabric stretches over time, or not considering how the jeans complement your body shape. To help you avoid these common mistakes, Amanda shares expert tips on what to avoid, ensuring you make the best choice for your perfect pair of jeans.

First, prioritize the size of the jeans over the fit.

“(People) focus too much on size,” Amanda says. “Many people buy prior to size alone, but it’s important to consider styles fit differently, like skinny, straight, or boot-cut can fit differently even in the same waist size. It is essential to focus on how the denim fits your body shape, not just the number on the tag. Denim, especially with different cuts, fits, and rises, can behave differently depending on the brand and fabric. It is always best to try them on before purchasing to ensure fit and comfort.”

Secondly, the importance of the rise of jeans is underestimated.

“(People) ignore the rise,” she says. “The rise refers to how high the waistband sits on your body, low rise, mid-rise, and high-rise. Choosing a rise that doesn’t suit your body shape or personal style can lead to discomfort or an unflattering fit.”

Lastly, don’t ignore the waistband.

“(People) forget about the waistband, make sure the waistband fits snuggly without being too tight or too loose,” she says. “A waistband that’s too tight can be uncomfortable and cause a muffin top while one that is too loose will slide down.”

Shopping for jeans in person not only helps you avoid these common mistakes and assess the quality of the denim, but it also provides the opportunity to try on different styles, cuts, and washes to find your perfect pair.

With new styles of jeans constantly emerging and fashion trends shifting, it can be challenging to determine which is genuinely worth the investment. While some styles come and go, certain styles stand the test of time, offering longevity and timelessness. But what is the one style of jeans that guarantees a long-term investment, one that is effortlessly stylish and adaptable regardless of changing trends?

“A classic cut of denim that will remain timeless is straight-leg jeans,” Amanda says. “This cut offers a clean, versatile look that works with just about anything, whether you dress up or dress it down. It’s not too tight. It’s not too loose, making it flattering for most body types.”

HIGH-QUALITY DENIM CHARACTERISTICS:

1. Texture and feel. Premium denim often has a slightly rough texture.

2. Stitching. High-quality denim typically has neat, even stitching with no loose threads.

3. Fit and construction. High-quality denim will contour to your body well and provide a good fit.

4. Premium denim. You’ll notice that high-quality denim may fade more naturally over time.

5. Brand reputation. High-quality denim is known for their craftsmanship

“Trends come and go, but a good fit never goes out of style,” Amanda explains.
“Focus on a timeless fit that you’ll wear often and forever.”

Straight-leg jeans are not only a timeless wardrobe essential that never goes out of style, but they go with just about anything. Dress it up with some cute heels and a nicer top, or pair it with some sneakers and a t-shirt to wear while you go run errands. Straight-leg jeans offer endless styling possibilities, remain stylish throughout changing fashion trends, and are perfect for every season.

While investing in a timeless pair of jeans is always a smart and worthwhile choice, incorporating current jean trends into your wardrobe can bring a fresh and exciting touch to your personal style.

This spring, Amanda notes that some of the standout denim trends making waves in the fashion world are slim straight jeans, wide-leg jeans, and white denim. Because these trends are more neutral, they are easy to incorporate into your current wardrobe.

“Trends come and go, but a good fit never goes out of style,” Amanda explains. “Focus on a timeless fit that you’ll wear often and forever.”

Nashville nonprofits address challenges in uniquely effective ways.

Recognizing the Work of Nashville Nonprofits

Nonprofits face ongoing challenges of improving quality of life or extending lifespan through fundraising. Those involved are often silent avengers or unsung heroes. This list includes a few of the many organizations making a difference.

One of their three programs 4Relief, distributes donated shoes and clothing to those in need in areas of crisis or natural disaster.

4Opportunity helps those in developing countries set up a sustainable business with donated shoes and clothing. Since 2006, together with partners and donors, they have created thousands of jobs in 53 countries.

4EveryKid initiative provides unhoused children with new shoes, boosting self-confidence and a sense of belonging at school. Statistically, that sense of belonging takes the focus off of their living situation and redirects it to learning.

Soles4Souls Crossroads Campus

In 2013, Crossroads Campus opened Crossroads Pets Shop & Adopt in Nashville’s historic Germantown neighborhood.

This program acknowledges “at risk” young adults who are working to overcome poverty, homelessness, or time in the foster care system.

In order to prepare participants for the workplace, Crossroads provides paid job training in all aspects of care for dogs and cats available for adoption.

Their affordable housing program consists of a four-bedroom unit with a shared kitchen and living space. To prepare them for independent living, workshops on financial literacy and self-advocacy are provided.

Nashville Food Project

The Nashville arm of the Austin-based nonprofit was established in 2007.

Like other food banks, the NFP works with local restaurants, grocers, markets, and farmers to repurpose food that would otherwise go to waste. The NFP goes beyond and partners with other organizations to grow organic food.

NFP partners with more than 50 community-based organizations. The recovered food, along with garden-grown produce, is prepared into fresh meals in their kitchens and shared with community groups.

Acknowledging that more than 40% of Nashville's food goes to waste, the organization is working toward a just and sustainable food system.

Clean Clothes for Kids

In 2018, PENCIL Board Member Blake McDaniel became aware of kids and their families who as a result of their living conditions, lacked access to washing machines or the ability to afford the use of public machines. Wearing unclean clothes caused a stigma and embarrassment for students, leading to absences.

Blake created “Clean Clothes for Kids” and partnered with PENCIL to raise funds for the purchase, installation, and maintenance of washer-dryer sets in Metro schools identified by the district. Access enabled faculty and parents to discreetly wash kids’ clothes at school for free.

To date, 50 washer-dryer sets have been placed. Absenteeism improved by 90% when access was facilitated.

William Oscar Smith Music School

Rally Foundation

In 2005, experiencing her son’s friend battle brain cancer, Dean Crowe created the Rally Foundation and made it her mission to find better treatments with fewer long-term side effects, with an ultimate goal to find cures.

The movement, recognized nationwide, empowers volunteers across the country to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

BRENTWOOD’S historical legacy

DIVE INTO THE PAST WITH THE HISTORY OF OUR TOWN

Brentwood has the best of both worlds. Its rural meets city setting is perfect for families to invest in for those wanting a suburban lifestyle, described as “second to none” by Brentwood’s Mayor Mark Gorman.

Brentwood is rich in resources, culture, and history. In fact, our history dates back to the Paleolithic age, with tribes passing through as wandering hunters as long as 100,000 years ago. Native Americans from the Mississippian Age moved into the area and were called “mound builders.” Artifacts from these burial mounds were donated to the Smithsonian. The mounds themselves can still be seen today, on Moore’s Lane within Primm Park.

As settlers began to move into the area, the Native Americans were moving out. Several founding families began to establish homes in this location. Mansions like Cottonport and the Mooreland home were founding residences. Many other historical homes can be seen along Franklin Road.

The Cottonport home, located on Old Smyrna Road, was built in 1811 as a fort to protect it from Native American raids. It is one of the oldest brick houses in Brentwood, with brick walls 18 inches thick. The Frost family built it. At one point, the site was the commercial center of the surrounding area, with a cotton gin, general store, grist mill, and post office.

Mooreland, located right in the middle of town, was used as a hospital during the Civil War for both Confederate and Union soldiers. It is built in Greek Revival style, with 22 rooms and a finished basement where the servants would live. Presently, it is under construction but is a beautifully restored hotel.

As the city of Brentwood grew, schools and churches began to be built. One of the first schoolhouses, named the Boiling Spring Academy, opened its doors in 1833. The curriculum taught children on three different levels of education, studying Grammar, Arithmetic, Geography, Greek, Sciences, and other subjects. It later became a meeting house for Presbyterian and other religious groups. This historic site is located along Moore’s Lane.

Noble’s restaurant was the first restaurant and, for many years, the only restaurant in Brentwood. Now, we have an assortment of places to eat in town, including the beloved Mere Bulles, Puffy Muffin, and the coveted Chick-fil-A.

When built, our radio tower was the second-tallest tower in the world, only second to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Tower Park surrounds the radio tower and is a great place to bike, walk, jog, skateboard, roller skate, or walk the dog. The tower is 808 feet tall and can carry 50,000 watts.

“We believe in balanced and responsible growth.”
— Mayor Gorman

When cruising around town, it is hard to miss all the beautiful homes, land, and historic sites dotting our town. One particular place is the Liberty Methodist Church, hidden away in one of our beautiful subdivisions. This was the first church of Brentwood, founded around 1800 by Green Hill, a Revolutionary War veteran and early Methodist leader.

As time went on, restaurants were popping up, police and fire stations were too, and we even built our own radio tower and prestigious library.

Brentwood continues to grow today as business succeeds and many new residents move to this beautiful borough. Brentwood invests in its dwellers.

Bestowed by Mayor Gorman, there is construction currently taking place for a new park called Windy Hill Park located on Old Smyrna Road.

“We believe in balanced and responsible growth,” said Mayor Gorman. Brentwood’s hometown feel will not change as we evolve as a town, “valuing how things are” presently.

If you are a history buff, there are many other sites to check out. Other places to visit to learn more about our town include Ravenswood Mansion, Sneed Acres, Cool Springs House, Maryland Manor Stables, and many more. Many of the sites have plaques to inform about the place’s history and origin.

THE TOWER THAT CHANGED MUSIC FOREVER

How The WSM Radio Tower Left It's Mark On Music History

While you may recognize the iconic red and white diamond-shaped radio tower on Concord Road, you might not know how deeply intertwined it is with music history.

WSM first hit the airwaves on October 5, 1925. Less than two months later, its most legendary show—the Grand Ole Opry—was born.

By 1932, WSM constructed the WSM Broadcast Tower at a whopping 878 feet tall, making it the tallest structure in America at the time. This radio tower carried the sounds of the Grand Ole Opry far and wide. In 1939, its height was adjusted to 808 feet to improve static-free transmission, ensuring crystal-clear country music for listeners nationwide.

Like moths to a flame, musicians flocked to Nashville, hoping for a chance to perform at the Grand Ole Opry—all thanks to the reach of this historic tower.

On March 15, 2011, the WSM Tower was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places, securing its place in Music City’s legacy and American history.

So next time you're cruising down Concord Road with your favorite country song on full blast, take a moment to notice and appreciate the WSM Tower.

MORNING HABITS

SUCCESS FOR

Four Simple Ways To Start Your Day Off On The Right Foot

One of the best ways to invest in yourself is by creating a consistent and intentional morning routine. No matter how unpredictable or chaotic the rest of your day may become, starting your morning with self-care and purpose sets a positive tone that stays with you throughout the day.  Once you develop a morning routine that truly resonates with you, you'll look forward to it every night, knowing it will set the foundation for a productive and fulfilling day.

GET YOUR STEPS IN:

An hour-long gym session before work may not be realistic, but a quick morning walk is. Use this time to clear your mind, enjoy nature, and listen to your favorite podcast or artist—an easy way to start your day feeling relaxed.

If you're ready to elevate your mornings, here are some meaningful ways to invest in your routine and start each day on the right foot.

BE YOUR OWN BARISTA:

One of life’s simplest pleasures is savoring a homemade coffee each morning. While skipping the drive-thru may be tough at first, brewing your own allows you to appreciate the process—and chances are, you’ll end up preferring your own perfect cup of joe.

ENJOY SOME BREAKFAST:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet often the most overlooked. Setting your alarm just minutes earlier to prepare a fresh, nutritious meal can transform your morning, fueling your body and mind for a more energized and productive day.

READ A BOOK:

Starting your day with a book is far more calming than scrolling through social media. Reading in the morning helps ease you into the day, providing a peaceful and mindful escape that sets a positive, focused tone for what’s ahead.
