The ultimate guide to the neighborhood. Delivered to you monthly.
With sincere gratitude, appreciation and immense joy, I would like to welcome you to the first issue of Brentwood City Lifestyle. Creating this magazine has been a dream of mine for so long, and it is tough to put into words the excitement, humbleness and great responsibility I feel as I invite you to join me on this journey.
For those of you who do not know me—and many who do!—my name is Amanda Eberstein, and I live in Brentwood with my husband and three young boys. It is a very busy and dynamic household, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. And although my most important job will forever be “mama,” I have a longtime career as a magazine editor, too. After growing up in Connecticut and studying journalism at USC, I worked as an editor at Departures and Architectural Digest in New York before returning to LA more than a decade ago to serve as the editor-in-chief of Angeleno and Interiors California . Along the way, I fell in love, got married, pursued a freelance writing career and, of course, started my family.
Throughout the years, as we have become deeply ingrained in the Brentwood community, I have become more and more inspired by this beautiful place that we are so lucky to call home. To me, Brentwood truly has the feel of a small town in the midst of a big city, with so many incredible families, business owners, local shops and restaurants. How wonderful would it be to create a neighborhood magazine that tells the story of Brentwood, and all of the extraordinary people who make it such a dynamic place to live?
This first issue is small but mighty, and filled with so many of my local faves. Please be sure to check out our restaurant feature on All Roads, the new spot from the folks behind Toscana, as well as the home design story on a beautiful new residence by Studio APA in Brentwood Park. Elsewhere you will find newsy updates, party pages, recipes, event listings and more. I would also love to express my appreciation for my incredible group of Founding Partners, many of whom you will learn more about in the following pages. These businesses truly represent the best that the area has to offer, and I am so honored to consider them part of the Brentwood City Lifestyle family.
Enjoy the issue! And thank you for welcoming us into your homes. We are just getting started.

ALL ROADS PINSERIA & ENOTECA BRINGS ITS UNIQUE ROMAN FLAVOR TO BRENTWOOD VILLAGE
For 35 years, Toscana has served as a beacon of the Brentwood community, beloved by locals and visitors alike. The famed Italian eatery, which sits on a prominent corner on San Vicente, has become the go-to spot for so many residents’ momentous life occasions, from birthday celebrations and graduations to power lunches and festive nights out. Yes, there are white tablecloths, crisp crudité, homemade pastas and fine-dining cuisine, but at its heart, Toscana is a neighborhood restaurant. It’s the type of place where everyone truly knows your name.
ARTICLE BY AMANDA EBERSTEIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHERINE DZILENSKI
The restaurant’s beginnings can be attributed to another iconic Los Angeles culinary figure: Wolfgang Puck. In the mid-1980s, owner Mike Gordan—then an entertainment industry business manager—spent a day with the legendary chef, who taught him how to eye the finest, freshest ingredients at the famers market and incorporate them into recipes. The day changed the trajectory of Gordon’s life. He and his wife Kathie packed their bags and took off for Tuscany, where they immersed themselves in the foods, wines and traditions of the region. In 1989, Toscana officially opened its doors in a classic brick building that once housed a pharmacy.
Over the last three decades, the Gordons have slowly expanded their restaurant portfolio, first with neighboring Bar Toscana and eventually S.Y. Kitchen and Nella Kitchen & Bar in the Santa Ynez Valley, followed by Nerano in Beverly Hills. Now, they have unveiled their latest concept, All Roads Pinseria & Enoteca, right in Brentwood Village.
If Toscana is the Grande Dame of Brentwood Italian dining, then All Roads is its hipper, quirkier little sister. A joint collaboration between the Gordons, Roberto Facciolla—Toscana’s longtime general manager and partner—and executive chef Luca Crestanelli, the restaurant has been conceived as a Roman-inspired
“The heart of All Roads is its selection of pinsa, a pizza-like relic of the Roman Empire.”
polished casual eatery (named after the phrase “All roads lead to Rome.” Designed by Candice Goodwin of Ralph Gentile Architects, the 1,900-square-foot space features a warm clay color palette punctuated by vintage, dusty hues and inviting jewel-toned greens. There is seating for approximately 50 patrons alongside simple wooden tables as well as a chic marble-topped bar.
The heart of All Roads is its selection of pinsa , a pizza-like relic of the Roman Empire crafted from a dough recipe of
rice, soy and wheat grains, fermented over multiple days. The result is a crust that is perfectly crispy on the outside, but airy and cloud-like on the inside. According to Facciolla, a native of Puglia, Italy, who traveled to Rome many times throughout the conceptual process, All Roads is one of only a few U.S. restaurants to serve the unique dish. And, unlike pizza, pinsa dough has less gluten and a lower sugar content, making it easier to digest.
The pinsa offerings range from a traditional Margherita to Bianca (mozzarella,
parmigiano and Challerhocker cheeses with caramelized onions) to more meat-centric options such as Mortadella (with pistachios, salsa verde, fior di latte mozzarella, burrata and pecorino) and the Romagnola (prosciutto, arugula, burrata, fior di latte and tomato confit). Panini sandwiches are served from 11 AM to 5 PM daily, featuring a delicious pinsa crust. Rounding out the menu are Roman street food specialties such as Supplì lightly fried balls made of carnaroli rice, mozzarella and tomato—and Carciofi alla Giudia , or fried baby artichokes served with pecorino, chives and aioli. The farm-fresh salads are also standouts, as well as the wagyu-based meatballs and the generous Fritto Misto. The wine list features nearly all Italian options, save for one: a red blend, Cocobacio, made from grapes grown in the vineyard of the Gordon’s Santa Ynez estate. A makeshift Botteglieria , or “bottle shop,” displays roughly 30 boutique wines for sale.
“The vibe is to bring people of every age at all hours of the day,” says Facciolla of the restaurant’s overall ethos. “You can come for coffee in the morning, or a beer at night. Grab a snack, a meal, get some great salads—the chefs pick ingredients from the farmers market every morning. There is of course a great selection of wine. There truly is something for everyone.” All roads lead to All Roads, indeed.

“We wanted to bring the spirit of modernism to Brentwood,” says architect Alex Pettas. “Our goal was to integrate the site’s topography with the architecture. We sought to work with nature rather than against it.”
Over the last few years, on a prime street in Brentwood Park, residents have quietly been observing the progress of one of the neighborhood’s most notable new constructions. Now, the strikingly sleek and sophisticated home— the work of Los Angeles firm Studio APA—is finally ready for its closeup. “We wanted to bring the spirit of modernism to Brentwood,” says Alex Pettas, the firm’s founding principle. “Our goal was to integrate the site’s topography with the architecture. We sought to work with nature rather than against it.”
The result is a remarkable two-story contemporary residence, tucked against a hillside yet responding to the natural slope of the site. Pettas—who worked for renowned architects Marmol Radziner for four years before establishing his own practice in 2015—organized the 8,546-square-foot main house into a unique L-shaped volume, with continuous walls of sliding doors and wrap-around floor-to-ceiling glass that bring daylight into each space. A poetic stone walkway leads from the driveway up to the front of the house, punctuated by an intricate Japanese-style tiered garden by acclaimed landscape designer Hoichi Kurisu. The home’s exterior of Western red cedar and Endicott brick add to the overall organic feel. After ascending the stairs, one is greeted with the entrance to the house, as well as one of its most distinctive elements—an expansive deck and sparkling infinity edge pool that run parallel alongside the front of the residence, rather than the back. “It’s been said many times that Los Angeles is the perfect setting for indoor-outdoor living,” Pettas says. “This home really captures that spirit.” Sliding pocket doors
visually extend into the landscape, leading directly into a connecting great room, kitchen and dining space, all done in clean-lined modern furnishings by San Francisco firm FQ Designs. The project was carefully overseen by Jason Maltas of Maltas Group. Light fixtures include Venice-based Stahl + Band’s undulating P Wave pendant—made of handwoven elephant grass and recycled plastic bottles—and a pair of Illan suspension lamps by Luceplan—a beautifully airy creation composed of strips of laser-cut plywood—hanging over the kitchen islands. An impressive glass-walled wine room by Thomas Warner Wine Cellars leads to an intimate sitting area and al fresco dining terrace. The seamless fusion of indoor and outdoor space is ideal for entertaining, creating an ambiance of openness and freedom.
Yet although the public spaces are quite vast, the private areas are equally calming and Zen in feel. The spacious primary bedroom suite is filled with neutral materials, nubby fabrics and herringbone wood floors. Soaring windows flood the room with natural light, while a spa-like bathroom features a walk-in glass shower and soaking tub. The remaining four bedrooms all look out onto lush landscaping and have their own ensuite bathrooms, while details such as custom millwork and artisanal plaster by Kamp Studios adds textured touches throughout. The bottom level of the home contains a cozy state-of-the-art theater and refined gym. And last but certainly not least, a freestanding accessory building towards the front of the property acts as both a pool house and additional guest quarters, complete with a rooftop sundeck.

When a project is carefully considered and designed with spirit, hopefully the user can feel that. “ ”
The end effect is a gorgeous personal sanctuary in the middle of Brentwood that manages to pay homage to the site, and its history, while also creating something completely innovative and new. “Our goal is to create
an experience that is in harmony with nature while also reflecting a modern point-of-view,” Pettas says. “When a project is carefully considered and designed with spirit, hopefully the user can feel that.”
WITH THE LAUNCH OF HER FIRST COOKBOOK, CHEF CAMILLA MARCUS INVITES YOU INTO HER DELIGHTFUL AND DELECTABLE WORLD
ARTICLE BY AMANDA EBERSTEIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN ROSSER
Los Angeles native Camilla Marcus has become a pioneer of regenerative cooking, a culinary style that focuses on sustainable, locally sourced ingredients, meat alternatives, net-zero farming and reducing food waste. Now, the multi-hyphenate chef and entrepreneur—who resides with her husband and four children in a storybook ranch house in Mandeville Canyon—is releasing her first book, My Regenerative Kitchen: Plant-Based Recipes and Sustainable Practices to Nourish Ourselves and the Planet (Chelsea Green Publishing) . Here, Marcus shares one of her favorite fall recipes.
makes 4 to 6 servings
ingredients
• 4 tablespoons (60 ml) avocado oil
• 1 small yellow onion, diced
• 5 garlic cloves, grated
• 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, peeled and grated
• 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
• 1 teaspoon ground cumin
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon coriander seeds
• 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes
• Pinch of saffron
• 2 1/2 to 3 cups of medium-diced hearty vegetables*
• 11/2 cups (240 g) cooked chickpeas
• 1 cup (240 ml) vegetable stock
• 1 cup halved grapes
• 1/2 cup medium-diced dried fruit*
• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1 teaspoon minced preserved lemon
• 1/2 cup pitted chopped Castelvetrano olives
directions
Heat two tablespoons of the avocado oil in a tagine or Dutch oven over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onion and cook for five minutes, until tender, then add the garlic, ginger, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, coriander, chili flakes and saffron. Bloom the spices in the oil for one-to-two minutes. Fold in the chopped vegetables and cook for about five minutes. Add the stock, grapes and dried fruit and season with salt and pepper to taste. Turn the heat up to medium-high, cook for 10 minutes, then cover and turn the heat down to a gentle simmer for another 20 minutes, until everything is tender. Finish by stirring in the preserved lemon and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Remove from the heat and sprinkle with the olives and remaining two tablespoons of avocado oil. Serve with couscous, shallot labneh and fresh herbs, if you like.
*“The key here is using heartier vegetables that take a bit longer to cook, like beets, sweet potatoes, carrots, leeks and winter squash. The dried fruit that works best is similarly more enduring—apricot, goldenberries, prunes, plums, cherries—to ensure all components keep their shape and bright flavor rather than breaking down too quickly during the long cooking process.”
