The Women's Issue

When I won Miss Mississippi Teen USA

in October I didn’t realize just how bad my teeth had shifted until I went for my dental

visit. I had already had braces back in high school and now I was facing the fact that the bottom teeth were crowding and somehow my upper teeth had started moving forward which looked like they were “bucking” out. I

met with Dr. Kemp and his team and we talked about making my smile beautiful again. I didn’t like to smile much at the time because the crowding on the bottom was very noticeable. Dr. Kemp explained the process and told me we could work quickly as to get me smile ready for Miss Teen USA. I had my braces for approximately 4 months. I have just had them removed and I don’t believe I have

stopped smiling yet. I have the perfect

smile now and I think my confidence level is at an all time high. The services I received were phenomenal. I absolutely love my smile now. On April 22 I will leave Mississippi to travel to Teen USA in Reno, Nevada. It’s a dream that has finally come true. We will be in Reno for one week learning the USA walk

EVERY YEAR WHEN MAY MAKES ITS WELCOMED RETURN TO OUR CALENDARS, WE CAN’T HELP BUT SING THE LINE FROM THE TEMPTATIONS’ “MY GIRL” THAT GOES, “WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE, I’VE GOT THE MONTH OF MAY.” This month brings with it an abundance of joy—bright blue skies, a rainbow of flowers and, of course, the celebration of mothers on May 12. In this issue, we not only celebrate mothers, but we also highlight all the wonderful women in our community—extremely successful, influential and real rock stars in their careers. The following pages are filled with stories to inspire us all to appreciate the women in our lives and to strengthen the connection we have with our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. From self-defense tips and a perfect bridal shower guide to behind the scenes of the CMA Foundation and profiles of several Brentwood women making a difference, the Women’s issue serves to recognize the powerful role women have in our community and beyond. (And don’t worry, gentlemen; you’ll have your moment—stay tuned.)

Showered in Love TIPS TO MAKE YOUR IMPRESSIVE AFFAIR SEEM MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN IT ACTUALLY WAS

SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME TO HONOR A BRIDE-TO-BE. It provides the most beautiful backdrop for a bridal shower, loaning its colors, patterns and seasonal goods perfectly for the occasion. But treating your ladies to a gorgeous luncheon paired with wine doesn’t need to be a daunting task! The Registry in Franklin is an ideal place to start gathering items and inspiration. Owners Kathy and Jane are no strangers to lending their expertise to all things wedding-related. They agree, first deciding on a color scheme and/ or theme is an important starting point. How would you like your party to feel? Would you like it more casual or formal or perhaps a bit of both? Will it be more traditional or contemporary? Will it be more minimalist or grandiose? Once those answers have been found, your event will begin to take shape. Most importantly, remember to have fun! This is a celebration! 18

Making Music Happen

Sarah Trahern, CEO of the Country Music Association

THREE LEADING LADIES OF COUNTRY MUSIC SPEARHEAD MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN NASHVILLE AND BEYOND

“Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.” – Plato

WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING MUSIC, TENNESSEE HAS ALWAYS PUNCHED FAR ABOVE ITS WEIGHT. Take a road trip along the length of Interstate Highway 40 and you pass through the folk songs of Appalachia, the country music and Americana of Nashville and the AM radio gospel of western Tennessee. And that is before you even reach the Isaac Hayes Memorial Highway, heading into Memphis with its wealth of blues and jazz and rolling to a rocking stop at Graceland. Not bad for a state without a beach. But music doesn't make itself; it takes music education. Currently, in Tennessee, only 68 percent of all public schools offer students access to both music and arts as required by state policy. Since at least the time of Plato, educators have known that musical education positively impacts students’ academic achievement and social development. Enter the Country Music Association Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to improving and sustaining music education programs nationwide. As the philanthropic arm of the Country Music Association, the CMAF since its 2011 inception has supported Pre-K through 12th grade music programs in public schools to the tune of more than $25 million, a testament to the generosity of the Country Music community and to the power of the annual CMA Fest to generate those funds.

LOCAL WOMEN SHARE THEIR STORIES OF INSPIRATION AND SUCCESS ARTICLE WILLIAM HARWOOD

Paula Hinegardner ABR, CRRS, ASP, CHLMS – KELLER WILLIAMS REALTY WHERE ARE YOU FROM, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN THE BRENTWOOD AREA? I was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia and went to college in Tampa. Because of our careers, my husband and I have lived in 16 different cities and seven states. Steve, my husband, and I have lived here for nine years with our two springer spaniels, Beau and Marley. WHAT LED TO YOUR CAREER IN REAL ESTATE? I retired from an amazing corporate life in 2010 knowing that I wanted real estate to be my second act. My mother had been a broker, so I had been around the business all of my life. Also, during the many years of moving, we worked with some incredible realtors as well as some who were not as experienced. Because of that, I learned quickly that real estate experiences, both good and bad, play a large part in setting up the moving family for either a smooth transition or for a very rocky road. Because of my personal experiences, I have a very soft place in my heart for people going through the moving process. It has always remained my goal to make every client’s experience as smooth and easy as I can! ANY ADVICE TO SHARE WITH OTHERS CONSIDERING THE FIELD? The most important that I could give people interested in going into real estate is to do it well and to be successful, real estate is hard work. As agents, clients not only give us their trust, but they give us the responsibility of what is often one of their largest financial assets, their homes. We owe it to them to be experts in our field, fully invested in their best interests and equipped to be able to provide them with the exemplary support and service from the beginning of the process to the closing and even afterward. It’s not always easy, and it’s nothing like what you see on HGTV or Million Dollar Listing, but it is absolutely one of the most rewarding things you will ever do! 28

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

(CON TI N U ED)

Connie Camp OWNER, NASHVILLE NEEDLEWORKS WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I was born in southern Ohio and raised in Kentucky. I have lived in Franklin, Tennessee, since 2000 with my family. WHAT DREW YOU TO YOUR LINE OF WORK? I have been doing needlepoint for more than 30 years. As a hobby, it allows me to be creative and inventive. I have honed my craft by taking classes from many diverse and unique instructors—always a good thing. ANY LESSONS OR INSIGHTS TO SHARE? Being a retail store owner certainly has its ups and downs, but it is well worth the long hours, and the non-stop activity to share something that I love with those who are just introduced to my craft has proven to be very rewarding. Yes, take the risk! It is worth it is so many ways!

Dia Mukerji MANAGING PARTNER, UNIIK DESIGN SOLUTIONS HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN THE BRENTWOOD AREA, AND DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMILY HERE? I was born and raised in Mumbai, India, but have lived in the Brentwood area for 15 years now with my husband and two sons. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? With an educational background in design and business management and a family business in textiles for 40 years, it was the lack of easily accessible and affordable woven fabrics that inspired me to start my business with textiles. The business quickly expanded to include other products such as artwork, furniture, flooring, lighting and everything interior. I started with residential design and then moved into project management for hospitality and commercial spaces. Our willingness to invest and expand into new product lines as opportunities arose has been a big contributor to our success. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN WHO WISH TO PURSUE THIS FIELD BUT MAY BE HESITANT TO TAKE THE LEAP? This is an industry that is growing at a fast pace, and I would encourage women to take the leap. As long as you are willing to learn and work hard, there is no stopping you!

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

(CON TI N U ED)

Connie Williams OWNER, THE POWER TO PAUSE WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I was born in Birmingham, Alabama, but my husband and I and our first son moved to Brentwood in 1997 from Atlanta. Our second son was born here. We were so fortunate to raise our boys in the Brentwood community and in the Williamson County school system. My boys are now in college, and we are sadly empty-nesters! YOUR LINE OF WORK IS UNIQUE. WHAT DREW YOU TO IT? A few years ago, I had a bad hip injury from a fall in bowling that sidelined me for months. I tried everything—massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, orthopedics. Nothing worked. I resorted to just plain and simple stretching on my floor at home. It was almost immediate relief. Within a week of daily stretching routines, I was back in action! It felt like a miracle. With my background in fitness, I knew that I had to learn more and share this with the world. I started studying everything I could find about stretching. I attended workshops in California and gained certifications. I opened The Power to Pause in April 2018 in the hopes that I would be able to help people understand the life-changing power of stretching and prevent injuries before they happen. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN WHO WISH TO PURSUE THIS FIELD BUT MAY BE HESITANT TO TAKE THE LEAP? I have been in the fitness industry for 40 years in many capacities. Agenia Clark PRESIDENT AND CEO, GIRL SCOUTS OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN THE BRENTWOOD AREA, AND DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMILY HERE? I am from Mobile, Alabama, but my husband and I moved to the area when we married in 1989. WHAT DREW YOU TO YOUR LINE OF WORK? I was a Girl Scout as a child, and it created an indelible impression on my life. To come full circle and work for the organization after years as a volunteer has been wonderful. WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT THE GIRL SCOUTS OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE THAT YOU WOULD MOST WANT OUR READERS TO KNOW? This year alone, we’ve had more than 80 new Girl Scout troops organized in the Williamson County area. More than 3,350 girls who are Girl Scouts live in Williamson County, with many being in Brentwood. More than 50 percent of the United Way annual Thanksgiving basket drive is filled by Girl Scouts in Williamson County. Girl Scouts, Brentwood and Williamson County are a winning formula. We can’t do what we do without the amazing volunteers and leaders. Oops, how could I forget? In 2018, Brentwood was the site for the Guinness World Book of Records “Most S’mores Made at One Time!” We’re still celebrating. It was so much fun.

HAS BEEN IN TOWN SINCE THE 1970S, AND LORI SHIPE HAS BEEN THE OWNER AND DESIGNER FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS. The shop just moved into a beautiful space next door which is filled with an abundance of flowers kept in stock every day. Lori and her staff are focused on customer service and personalized flower design for any occasion. She believes in being on the premises every day to ensure that everything is just perfect for her customers. For Mother’s Day, the shop will have a huge variety of flowers, including peonies, tulips, garden roses and unique flowers you don’t see every day. She encourages people to bring in a piece of family china, such as a teacup, in which she can arrange the flowers for a lovely table display. The arrangements themselves can be done in a variety of price ranges in order to fit everyone’s budget. “Mother’s Day is one of my favor-

Specializing in custom jewelry and repair, they also do rework, which is creating something new out of the old, as well as watch repair. Everything is done in-house, and most of the high-quality merchandise in the cases has been designed and made by either Sailor or Sonny. “We do all things jewelry,” Taylor says. For Mother’s Day, they have a variety of beautiful items from which to choose. Two of their most popular are the initial and name stackable necklaces. “We make them like modern-day charm bracelets so you can add letters and gemstones for future children,” Taylor says.

BRENTWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT HELPS WOMEN THWART AGGRESSORS WITH FREE, FUN AND EFFECTIVE COURSE

R.A.D.ically Empowered BRENTWOOD POLICE OFFICERS SAM BADY, MARK WOOD AND ALLI SEGAL ARE THE EXPERT INSTRUCTORS OF R.A.D., A SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAM THAT CAN HELP YOU TURN THE TABLES ON AN AGGRESSOR AND KEEP YOU FROM BEING VICTIMIZED. Standing for “Rape Aggression Defense,” R.A.D. is the nation’s largest and fastest-growing self-defense program, and Officers Bady, Wood and Segal are all R.A.D.-certified. Offered throughout the year, these free, women-only courses for women ages 13 and up meet at Brentwood Safety Center East from 6–9 p.m. twice a week for two weeks. Your strength, size and level of fitness do not matter; it’s a “go at your own pace” program. “If you can walk up a flight of stairs, you can do this class,” Officer Wood says. In addition to the camaraderie the course affords, it’s a great bonding experience for mothers and daughters. Participants learn how to make themselves a hard target while gaining experience in practical techniques of thwarting an aggressor. “It’s serious business, but our classes are still fun,” Officer Bady says. Classes also fill up, so sign up soon. To do so, contact Officer Mark Wood at mark.wood@brentwoodtn.gov, or call him at 615.577.6021 R.A.D. helps build confidence to defend yourself against predators.

Weight Lost. Life Gained.

With weight loss surgery, you often gain more than you lose.

With increased risk of developing other diseases, like diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure or cardiac disease, many find choosing weight loss surgery to be their first step towards lifelong health. If you are affected by severe obesity and have not been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, our team at TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center is here to walk you through this life-changing decision.
