Welcome to our HOME Issue

The closer I get to fifty, I’m finding that more and more, I just want to be home.

If you looked in our garage, you might think the opposite. The walls are lined with skis, bikes, motocross gear, and fly fishing accessories. I even have a special section just for the individual racks that carry all of the said gear. My wife loves to lament about my many hobbies, and she is indeed correct. Hey, we live in Colorado, so how could I pass up on enjoying it to the fullest? While I do love getting out in the mountains, rivers, and trails, what I crave most is being home with Katie and our kids. On any given week, I am looking to see what concerts are coming to Boulder Theater or Velvet Elk, but by the time the weekend arrives, I usually pull a Homer Simpson and disappear into the bushes (or our couch).

The Home issue is always one we look forward to here at Boulder Lifestyle. Our distribution focuses on single-family homeowners so that naturally lends itself to highlighting the incredible talents of the local design community. We are so honored to have the “best of the best” as advertising partners with us. A home designed and built by Rodwin Architecture | Skycastle Homes was featured in our very first issue, back in 2013. Twelve years later, (and many other features in between) we are proud to once again feature their incredible work.

During COVID, we all had to “stay home,” which was fun for a while. We went stir crazy pretty quick, and the reaction that followed was everyone wanting to travel. Our family is now finding that balance of adventuring versus being content around a Monopoly board or Liberty Puzzle. Also, let’s be honest, we do it for the sake of our dogs' well-being. For anyone with an anxious dog, you can probably relate. There is nothing quite like the relaxed demeanor of a dog when the family is all safely settled on the couch together. Their hard work of protecting us all is finally done for the day.

We hope you enjoy the issue and thank you for reading!

BOULDER BALLET’S BOLD SPRING SEASON

As the natural world comes alive with colorful hues, Boulder Ballet is set to enchant audiences with a season that blends the elegance of tradition with the excitement of innovation. Recognized for stunning choreography and fresh perspectives on classical ballet, this new season promises a captivating journey for those who appreciate the finer nuances of art and culture.

“We are now on the threshold of a whole new chapter for ballet in Boulder. We are bringing in coveted works by world-renowned choreographers, and our dancers are gaining national recognition for the power of their performances,” shares the company’s Artistic Director Ben Needham-Wood.

WHAT’S ON DECK

The March program, “REVIVED,” features three dynamic works that explore unique approaches to the revival process.

One of these is the Boulder premiere of Nicolo Fonte’s The Heart(S)pace, a celebrated work originally created for Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. During its original creation nearly a decade ago, Nicolo experienced a profound personal loss, giving the piece its vibrant emotional depth. Now, Boulder Ballet will be the first company to bring it back to life.

“One of our rehearsal directors, Sadie Brown, was an original cast member of The Heart(S)pace, and thanks to her, we have been given permission to revive this ballet,” Ben says. “It's amazing to take a work celebrated on the international stage and bring it to our local community in Boulder.”

The second work, Within Without by Andrea Schermoly, offers dancers a rare chance to revisit a piece within the same season, having performed it in the fall. Ben explains that it’s “a rare gift” for a performer to revisit something while it's still fresh in their body, allowing them to dive even deeper into the process.

“It’s amazing to return to it and reflect on how much we’ve all grown since the start of the season,” dancer Gianna Forte says.

“Returning to Within Without feels like rediscovering a conversation with a past self—each performance unlocks something new, deepening my connection to the work and my own artistry,” dancer Philip Perez adds.

Finally, Cooties, choreographed by Ben about a decade ago, rounds out the program. This whimsical piece uses music by René Aubry and explores themes of relationships and interactions.

“What I recognize is that 10 years ago, I was a very different choreographer than who I am today,” he says. “With this revival, we can actually change the choreography to better showcase our Boulder Ballet dancers. It’s going to allow the interactions between the dancers on stage to be more genuine and personalized to them.”

“REVIVED” runs March 21-23 at the Dairy Arts Center.

“I hope our ‘REVIVED’ program unlocks different layers of emotions for our audience members,” dancer Morgan Rust says. “Each piece has a unique sentiment that will personally touch each audience member.”

The season culminates with a new production, Queen of Hearts, a spinoff of Alice in Wonderland, May 16-18. This original ballet offers a fresh narrative exploring the Queen of Hearts’ backstory, featuring modern, minimalist set and costume designs and a new score developed with music director Jean Hatmaker.

A gala fundraiser on April 3rd at Corrida will aim to help bolster the company’s growth and financially fuel its ongoing success. An evening of celebration and community support will propel its mission to new heights, reaffirming its place as a cornerstone of the city’s vibrant arts scene.

Join Boulder Ballet this spring to experience the artistry, passion, and creativity that define this exceptional company. The 2025 season promises to inspire and remind us of the arts’ profound impact on our lives.

“We are a small but mighty company here in Boulder, and we've built a lot of momentum these past couple of years. I know that with additional support we're going to keep growing, and it's so exciting to imagine what more this company could become,” Ben says.

Something Blue

Effortless layering, warmth, and a blending of eras are what interior designers Natasia Smith and Sandy Baisley bring to clients of their Boulder firm, Re-Find. Working with their in-house contractor, Tight Lines Construction, they start each project by addressing the history of a space and what a client needs from it. They also consider clients’ heirlooms and keepsakes to incorporate into every design. “We don't want them to have a space that feels impersonal,” Natasia says. When her husband, a billiards enthusiast, wanted a place where he could not only play pool but also entertain, work, and spend time with the couple’s three children, she and Sandy instantly started gathering inspiration.

MIXING MODERN AND VINTAGE

Located on the first floor of a 1920s addition to the client’s 1893 Boulder home, this space was part of a dated mother-in-law suite with a mountain wallpaper mural discovered during renovations. Its transformation began with a custom coffered ceiling in walnut and striking paint in Farrow and Ball’s Hague Blue. Moody yet inviting, this new vibe set the stage for furnishings and decor. Sandy and Natasia sourced an 1800s bench, a European leather sofa, mid-century chairs, and a 1970s-style tulip table. An oversized, 19th-century Turkish rug is unfurled beneath the room’s pièce de resistance: a Diamond Professional pool table, its original blue felt re-covered in a tan hue to better complement the room.

At the bar, intricate veins in the quartzite countertops play nicely against the copper sink. A freezer, refrigerator, and dishwasher have high-sheen cabinet fronts in the same color as the walls, with a mix of nickel and copper hardware. To preserve the room’s history, Natasia and Sandy kept the original fireplace brick after adding a Victorian-inspired gas insert; door hardware and the radiator are also original. Artwork throughout the room

ranges from commissioned pieces to family mementos to Facebook Marketplace finds. “We’re always traveling, searching and collecting,” Sandy says. “We have an inventory of beautiful things that we pull from.”

BUILT FOR STRENGTH AND BEAUTY

The most important focus of the billiard room was ensuring adequate space around the professional-sized pool table. Tight Lines Construction “spent a lot of time working with the client to make sure he had enough room to play pool without any interference from the walls or furniture,” Sandy says. “He needed an unobstructed playing field.” The builders also strengthened support beneath the room to hold the heavy table. During the renovation, Tight Lines aspired to achieve Re-Find’s vision—the team installed a large piece of glass over the bar that typically would be cut into two pieces with a seam—and pay homage to the character of the space with details like molding that was custom milled to match what existed. “When you walk in here, you can tell it's been refreshed, but it doesn't feel like an odd, brand-new room,” Natasia says. “Tight Lines did a wonderful job honoring the history.”

“We’re

always traveling, searching, and collecting,” Sandy says. “We have an inventory of beautiful things that we pull from.”

LIVED-IN LUXURY

Facing a firm deadline (the client was set to host the Boulder Historical Society’s annual gala), Re-Find and Tight Lines completed the billiard parlor within six months. From the dinette to the plush couch to the twin barstools, each nook invites family and friends to get comfortable while the pool table serves as the eye-catching anchor. It’s a luxurious room, to be sure—one that guests can’t help gravitating towards during dinner parties—but it’s also user-friendly. “We want our projects to be livable places,” Natasia says. “This is a joint entertaining space that’s enjoyed all the time.”

HOW DISCOVERY, CREATIVITY, AND PURPOSE BLEND AT THE REFINERY IN BOULDER

ARTICLE BY LISA VAN HORNE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFER

When former fashion industry executive and entrepreneur Paula Minnis was seeking inspiration for the next chapter of her career after moving to Boulder with her family, she knew that unearthing a sense of purpose would be key to fully investing in a new venture.

“One of the many lessons that my experience in running a social enterprise taught me is the importance of finding meaning in your work,” says Paula.

“ lIevo c o m bining differentstyles and eras. ”
“I’m all about the mix.”

With experience spanning fashion, retail, and brand development roles—as well as founding a lifestyle brand focused on providing sustainable employment opportunities for refugee women in Dallas—Paula hoped to discover a local need that aligned with her skills and background. She connected with friends and acquaintances—brainstorming ways to bring her love for interior design to purposeful use in her new community. When a local realtor friend mentioned the abundance of high-end furniture pieces that she often saw left behind when her clients downsized or made cross-country moves, an idea took root for Paula that immediately felt right.

Paula opened The Refinery in May 2024 as a furniture, art, and home consignment destination. Located on Prairie Avenue just off Pearl Parkway, it’s a business characterized by its distinct blend of styles, warm aura of welcome, and diverse mix of treasures sourced both locally and around the globe.

“I credit the incredibly cool, eclectic, and discerning style of Boulderites with what truly makes The Refinery special,” says Paula. “Boulder consignors have amazing taste, and our furniture collection is a reflection of that.”

Inspired by a daily sense of discovery and the beauty of imperfections, Paula works to help her customers find unexpected pieces to help foster a sense of home in their abodes. In addition to preloved pieces sourced from local consignors, Paula carefully curates additional items to complement this focal furniture. Purposefully seeking out ethically made and unique accessories—from artisan baskets to vintage textiles, quirky tchotchkes, and ceramics by local artists—Paula admits that it is also an opportunity for her to shamelessly indulge in seeking out fun home items to style and “zhuzh” throughout the store.

“I’ve been so touched by everyone’s warmth, support and enthusiasm.”

“I’m all about the mix,” says Paula. “I love combining different styles and eras, like an antique chest with a midcentury modern chair, an art deco mirror, and a vintage Moroccan rug. I also love a little quirk. Every home should have at least one funky piece that makes people do a double take.”

The joy that Paula feels in the design aspect of her work is matched by her enthusiasm for encouraging people to be mindful of how they furnish their homes.

“I hope to discourage the mindset that furniture is disposable,” says Paula. “Instead, we should try to continue to keep it in circulation for others to enjoy. It’s just about being intentional in what you buy, taking good care of it, then finding it a new loving home when it’s time to move on.”

As Paula looks forward to celebrating The Refinery’s one-year anniversary, she notes that she has been inspired by the many designers, artists, businesswomen, and leaders in the

community that she has met along her path. She aspires for The Refinery to become further engrained in the fabric of Boulder—giving back through an expanded partnership with HomeAhead, a local furniture bank that helps furnish apartments for people transitioning out of homelessness while continuing to build her own community as well.

“I’ve been so touched by everyone’s warmth, support, and enthusiasm,” says Paula. “It lifts me up every day.”

How Passion, Dedication, and Innovation

Helped this Flooring Expert Stay Grounded

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MEYER SKIDMORE

To say Abbey Van Horn has built a solid foundation in her line of work would be an understatement. As the owner of Meyer Skidmore and Company, a flooring business that’s been enhancing homes in Boulder and Longmont for nearly 50 years, her journey is the ultimate “working from the ground up” success story we all love to hear.

More than a decade ago, when she accepted an office manager role at the company, Abbey knew little of the flooring world. But, step by step—and with each new project—her passion and expertise within the industry continued to grow. Under the guidance of a boss-turned-mentor, she mastered the logistical side of the business while refining her ability to create a seamless customer experience.

Down the road—following countless floor installations and restorations—the founders decided to hang up their hammers after more than 40 years in business. Abbey couldn’t let the legacy of Meyer Skidmore slip through the cracks. Seizing the moment, she made a career-defining move.

“The owners wanted to retire and enjoy life outside of work,” Abbey recalls. “They were planning to close the doors, but I asked if there was a way to keep it going. They were thrilled and agreed to sell me the company—so here we are!”

A NEW ERA

While the Meyer Skidmore namesake remains, Abbey has expanded the business beyond its hardwood roots. Under her leadership, the company now specializes in tile, carpet, and epoxy flooring, continuing its tradition of quality craftsmanship with a broader range of expertise.

With her at the helm, Abbey’s small but mighty team of four has mastered the art of adaptation, receiving well-earned recognition along the way. They were named

the 2020 and 2023 Boulder County Gold Daily Camera Award winner for “Best Women-Owned Company” and recently took home the prize for the 2024 Boulder County GoldPeople’s Choice Award for “Best Hardwood Flooring.”

To keep pace with an ever-changing industry, the team made two game-changing moves: relocating from Boulder to Longmont and replacing the traditional showroom with an on-the-go mobile studio. The switch not only cut overhead costs but also made the selection process easier and more convenient for clients—a win-win for both business and customers.

“A few months ago, we decided to make the big switch and go with a fully mobile showroom,” she explains. “We still have thousands of samples, but now we bring them directly to our clients' homes. This makes a huge difference because the look and feel of a sample can change drastically depending on the space. In a traditional showroom, the lighting won’t be the same as yours, the wall colors will be different, and the kitchen cabinets might not match at all. Seeing it all in your own space is a huge help.”

OLD FLOORS, TIMELESS TRENDS

While a new floor installation is always a fun project for the Meyer Skidmore team, Abbey prefers the process of restoring an old hardwood floor to its former glory.

“One of the biggest misconceptions we hear from clients is, ‘This floor is over a hundred years old—there’s no way

to save it,’” she explains. “But the truth is, hardwood floors can typically be refinished five or six times in their lifespan, and most older floors have only been sanded once. That means they still have plenty of life left in them! Restoring them always brings a lot of joy, and then choosing a stain color becomes a fun part of the process.”

Speaking of, Abbey is excited to see that the grey-stain trend is starting to fade, and in its place, warmer tones— reminiscent of flooring trends from the 90s and early 2000s—are making a strong comeback. "Warm browns are really making a splash," she says. "People are looking for a timeless, 'forever' color, and light, bright natural stains will always have a place."

ELEVATING DESIGN

Although hardwood floor renovations will always be Meyer Skidmore’s signature, many of Abbey’s clients seek her out to level up their homes by redesigning their staircase. “Stairs can be a total statement piece of your home,” she explains. “It’s almost like a piece of art, unique to your space.”

Abbey and her team have recently been swapping out traditional staircases for exposed, block-tread designs to create a more open and airy feel. “It really opens up the space, and the stairs become a striking focal point instead of just a plain, carpeted set of steps.”

For older homes where an exposed staircase might not

suit the style, Abbey recommends painting the risers in an accent color. It’s a quick and easy way to make your staircase stand out and add character to your home.

A MASTER OF HER CRAFT

Abbey’s journey with Meyer Skidmore shows how passion and dedication can truly transform a business. Starting from the ground up, she learned every aspect of the flooring industry and used that knowledge to guide the company into a new era with innovative solutions, like the mobile showroom. Her path shows that taking the time to truly master your craft is not only a solid foundation for growth but a smart way to build something that stands the test of time.

FAMILY’S CONNECTION TO NATURE

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction’s Animal House

Instead of building walls and disassociating from nature’s abundance, many homebuyers are now curious to have a place that merges architecture and the environment instead of one that rejects the land’s natural essence. Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction are instrumental in advocating for this philosophy in the Boulder area and beyond. The sibling companies’ Animal House is yet another example of their commitment to sustainability and innovation.

“The owners love animals and have horses, dogs, and cats and wanted to fully integrate them into the design of the house and property,” says CEO Scott Rodwin. “In addition to a four-stall horse barn, there were numerous custom details such as built-in kennels in the main social space and a dog wash. Next to that we created a hard-working mudroom to help keep all their gear and the kid chaos well-organized.”

Completed in 2021, Animal House is entwined with congeniality, sustainability, and functionality. Nestled in the mountains to the west of Boulder, Animal House is a near-net zero energy home that sits at the crossroads of modern and physis. “Physis” means “nature” in ancient Greek, and Animal House represents the dual potential of old and new, sacred and contemporary.

The breathtaking views are unmatched. Whether you are doing your skincare ritual in the bathroom or sipping coffee on the porch, the benefits of having nature and home connect are incontestable. Not only are the design elements beautiful, they serve a function as well. “The steeply sloping property required a careful design. We created a bridge between the main house and the primary suite, which both helped to manage water flow around the house, and also meet the client’s desire for a private retreat

for their bedroom,” states Project Manager Jocelyn Parlapiano. “The owners requested that the house maximize their connection to nature. As you cross the glass bridge, it gives them a dramatic connection to the surrounding landscape and all the abundant wildlife in the area.”

Every element maximizes the home’s level of sustainability and relationship to the outdoors. Jocelyn continues: “The kitchen, dining room, and Great Room have an open floor plan with a vaulted ceiling. This again allows light, views, and a sense of being outdoors from every room in the house.” The eco-friendly aspects of the home do not stop there; Scott adds:

“The near net zero (HERS 10) home’s green features include a ground source heat pump, 10KwH of solar photovoltaics, an energy recovery ventilator that maximizes indoor air quality, foam insulation, and Energy Star windows. The native landscaping conserves water and minimized disruption to the idyllic site.”

“The kitchen, dining room, and Great Room have an open floor plan with a vaulted ceiling. This again allows light, views, and a sense of being outdoors from every room in the house.”

The masterminds’ most-loved spot of the whole house? “The primary bathroom was one of our favorite spaces,” beams Jocelyn. The process of building Animal House was just as unique as the final product. “It was especially challenging working on a remote site during the pandemic as both material and unprecedented supply-chain breakdowns made all construction dramatically more complex,” remarks Co-owner and President of Skycastle Construction

“Having the tight integration of the design/build process made it possible to successfully reach the finish line.”

Brandon David. “Having the tight integration of the design/build process made it possible to successfully reach the finish line.”

Rodwin Architecture and Skycastle Construction are on good terms with Mother Nature. Their project, Animal House, reiterates their mission of designing and building green homes that work hand in hand with nature and that last for lifetimes.

FINDING POSITIVITY IN EXTREME PREMATURITY WITH 4THOSE

ARTICLE BY MEREDITH ROWE

In 2019, Stephanie Hauser gave birth to her third son, Zev, at just 23 weeks and 1 lb, 4 oz. At the time, this was under the age of viability, and he was given less than a 1% chance of surviving through birth.

At 23 weeks, babies do not have fully developed lungs, but Zev stunned everyone in the delivery room by crying. In that moment, they collectively realized this little baby who could fit in the palm of their hands was stronger than anyone previously thought.

This began a seemingly impossible journey as Zev fought for his life in UCHealth’s NICU. Every day for five months, or 147 days, there was devastating news, like when two severe brain bleeds wiped out whole parts of Zev’s brain. And every time, Hauser got in the habit of asking the doctor or nurse to flip the narrative and tell them something possible or positive.

“Tell me what’s good,” says Hauser. “It really right-sized the moments and gave us a fuller picture.”

In the case of the brain bleeds Zev was so young that the neural pathways may not have even formed yet.

At two weeks, Zev was declining in health. The Hausers were given the impossible choice of taking him off the

machines and having him pass in their arms or trying on last hail Mary—a steroid called Dexamethasone that came with a 95% chance he’d never walk, talk, eat, or breathe on his own.

Again, they looked at the positive. That remaining 5% meant that someone somewhere did, and that could be their kid. The Hausers listened to their intuition and decided that no matter what, he’d have a beautiful life full of love. A life that wouldn’t be less, even if he never did any of those things.

Today, Zev doesn’t just walk and talk. He rock climbs and skis and has meltdowns, just like many other sixyear-olds. And Hauser, seemingly wired for positivity, has taken Tell Me What’s Good beyond the NICU.

Stephanie and Ben Hauser run a nonprofit called 4those, which aims to build community for premature babies and their families. They host an annual

NICU Family Day Out with a petting zoo and train. They also put on Parent Care Workshops, where a licensed family and trauma therapist helps parents and caregivers find emotional healing. Their long-term goal is to create a permanent place for all of these “impossible kids” and their families, creating a facility with programming for kids born prematurely with disabilities.

To raise funds, Hauser does something every year to mark those 147 days in the NICU. She ran 147 miles over 48 hours, raising $50,000 and creating 147, a Documentary that’s been in several film festivals. To her, nothing feels impossible anymore, and she’s set an even bigger, more ambitious goal for 2026: 1,470 miles and $500,000.

In addition to planning the route for that run, 4those is also working on this year’s Family Day Out on Saturday, June 14, from 9-11 am at Ascent Community Church in Louisville. They’re also bringing 147 to the Durango Independent Film Festival and have an upcoming screening at the Patagonia on Pearl Street on Thursday, March 13th, at 7 pm.

When a home is a work of art, work with the people who see it that way.

“We own every bit of this process from start to finish, so it’s critical we have sub-contractors that buy in with the vision.”

“This house is a work of art. It was a large-scale remodel, a very challenging paint job. Massive quantities of very intricate trim work, wainscoting, crown molding, miles of glossy finishes on the walls -- everything that’s gonna show any small defect. This Maurer crew was hands down the best crew I’ve ever seen. They show up in immaculate whites, they take it seriously, and it really shows. Just really professional all the way through. Before I was a general contractor, one of the many things I did . . . was a painter. So I can pretty quickly recognize quality when I see it. As important -- they’re really great people to work with. If you do a good job but you’re not much fun to be around with, I’m probably not gonna call you back for the next job.”

MUCH MORE THAN SITTING AND WATCHING, THIS FESTIVAL IS A CELEBRATION OF KINSHIP AND HUMANITY

SILVER SCREEN SISTERS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RANDY MALONE OR COURTESY OF BOULDER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Standing as a staple in the area and a testament to the importance of investing in tradition/creative spirits, the Boulder International Film Fest gears up to add another notch to its over two-decades-long run. I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with Kathy Beeck, co-founder of BIFF, for a colorful recanting of the festival’s history and ethos that provides the backbone for the celebration.

Kathy and her sister Robin have a long history with the art form, stemming from their early years in Boulder. “We grew up working in theaters, which really cultivated our love of the craft.” That initial love sparked many journeys through the years, traveling the world, making their own films, and attending various film festivals. Through this process, a nagging thought began to recur with increasing frequency: why didn't Boulder, vibrant as it is, have its own festival?

They waited and waited until they had the epiphany that it was they themselves who had the tools, experience, and passion necessary to bring the celebration of film to Boulder. Though they’d never done their own before, their amassed festival experience left them with a basis of ingredients they could distill, keeping the best factors and implementing that which they wished to have seen in other fests.

After pitching to the community and getting mass positive support, the first BIFF was launched, bringing the sister’s vision to life and creating the institution that is now 20 years old and running. Today, though the crowd is larger, the buzz is bigger, and the star power greater, the core of the festival remains the same: sharing human experiences in longform, unfurling, intimate nuances offered through the abstraction gifted to us while viewing the world through another’s perspective is what keeps the sisters, the vibrant festival staff, and volunteers joyously returning year after year.

Timeless

THE LEGACY OF FINE DINING AND FAMILY HERITAGE AT BOULDER’S FLAGSTAFF HOUSE

ARTICLE BY TONY FIRESTINE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEHIND THE APRON MEDIA

With an unparalleled view of Boulder, the iconic Flagstaff House has a storied history spanning nearly a century. From its humble beginnings as a cabin to becoming a premier fine dining destination, the Flagstaff House embodies the evolution of a family’s dream, perseverance, and dedication to excellence in cuisine and service.

View

“EVERY SINGLE GENERATION , IN ITS WAY, BUT WE STILL STAY TRUE TO THOSE HAS ADDED THEIR OWN TOUCH ,

In the early 20th century, the Flagstaff House was initially intended to be a ranger station providing access to Gross Reservoir. However, the property took a different turn when it was sold privately to a couple who used it as a summer cabin. Built in 1929, the structure changed hands multiple times, serving as a seasonal retreat before transforming into a fine-dining establishment.

In 1971, Don Monette, a visionary restaurateur, saw the potential in the property. At the time, Don owned and operated three different restaurants in downtown Boulder—each catering to different dining experiences. Despite his already demanding career, he decided to sell his businesses and invest in the Flagstaff House, which was still a modest summer cabin at that time.

With a steadfast commitment to creating a year-round destination for fine dining, Don began extensive renovations to accommodate guests in all seasons. Over the decades, the Flagstaff House

underwent numerous expansions and upgrades. The dining areas were modernized, and the expansive deck was added to provide guests with a breathtaking panoramic view of Boulder. Significant efforts were also made to connect the restaurant to essential utilities, and after public votes and approvals, infrastructure improvements were made to ensure the restaurant's long-term viability.

“[Don] fought so hard to make the Flagstaff House really what it is capable of being today. He laid down those stones,” recalls current co-owner, third-generation operator, and grandson of Don, Adam Monette. “Every single generation, in its way, has added their own touch, but we still stay true to those core values of excellence in both cuisine and service.” Adam took on a co-owner role with Executive Chef Chris Royster in 2022.

The Flagstaff House has always been more than just a restaurant; it is a family legacy. At one point, 16 Monettes worked within the establishment, contributing to its growth and success. Adam recalls childhood memories of helping his father with kitchen prep work. Even as generations have transitioned, the sense of family remains strong among staff members. Employees like Elena, a prep cook who has been with the restaurant since the late 1980s, are integral to its operations. Adam reminisces about Elena’s kindness, recalling how she used to sneak him sugar cookies as a child and recently did the same for his daughter, Presley.

Among the many cherished artifacts at the Flagstaff House, one stands out—the painting of Ruby. Left behind when Don Monette purchased the building in 1971, the painting depicts a woman reclining and exuding an aura of timeless elegance. “We will never take her out of the restaurant because we attribute the success and longevity of the restaurant to Ruby,” Adam shares. The painting has become the Flagstaff House's silent guardian, watching its evolution and continued success.

Today, the Flagstaff House is a balance of tradition and innovation. While the menu evolves constantly, the restaurant remains deeply rooted in its culinary excellence and hospitality. “We need to not just evolve for the sake of evolving, but we need to change with the times,” says Adam. “Service changes, cuisine changes, the ambiance changes, the artwork and the paint colors change. But no matter what, we still adhere to our roots and what we are.” The Flagstaff House’s commitment to greatness is also evident in its extraordinary wine program. The restaurant boasts a Grand Award-winning wine cellar recognized by Wine Spectator, offering a collection of over 16,000 bottles, including vertical and rare vintages. With generations of family stewardship and a commitment to constant evolution, the Flagstaff House remains a cornerstone of fine dining in Boulder. As Adam puts it, “Every day, we improve more and more. That’s what we are representing—54 years of evolution in fine dining. We’re very proud of that.”
