Summer in Paris

As summer rages on, pool days, hiking trails and the Summer Olympics are upon us and I find myself feeling extra grateful to call this beautiful place home. Growing up, Colorado was our summer vacation go-to, and no summer felt complete without time spent here to get out into these Rocky Mountains and do some adventuring. Still to this day, that Colorado adventuring spirit feels at its max this time of year.

With the summer energy at its height and the days at their longest, it's time to get outside and enjoy that warm Colorado sun. Let’s appreciate all that this great state has to offer, whether that is following the Colorado River like Noelle Phares, heading to Red Rocks with your Sweepinspired braids, rock climbing like Brooke Raboutou, or getting in that shave ice fix at Punch Buggy,

This month we are celebrating all things summer that are loved by kids and adults alike. We are in a unique position when flipping on the Summer Olympics to see familiar faces and names right from our little corner of the world. These are people that inspire a whole new generation of Boulderites to hop on their bike, swim some laps, put on those climbing shoes, and dream up a future as the next Olympian. Let this be the summer full of dreams!

119 Years After it Opened, an Historic Boulder County Public Pool is Revitalized

MAKING A SPLASH MAKING A SPLASH

Nestled against the picturesque crags of Eldorado Canyon, the Eldorado Springs Resort became a go-to getaway when it opened in 1905 and experienced its heyday through the 1910s and 20s. Dubbed “The Coney Island of the West,” the mountain retreat drew the likes of Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower and famed conductor Glenn Miller with two luxe hotels and an array of amenities, including a sprawling swimming pool fed by the area’s coveted natural spring water. The pool has remained a beloved Colorado destination for locals and out-of-towners in the decades since. This summer, it’s slated to reopen following a five-year renovation that carefully balances the past and present.

Preserving the pool’s charming Spanish Mission architectural style while offering visitors a contemporary experience was most important to the resort’s team as they considered updates. “We needed to bring all of the amenities up to modern times,” says Erica Larson, director of HR and resort operations. “The pool has new filters and heaters, and a deck on top of brand-new locker rooms. A lot of the pool’s appeal is the deck space.” The pool also features an expanded snack bar offering ice cream, hot dogs and popcorn from local vendors. Visitor comfort was thoughtfully considered in the design as well—the facility is now ADAaccessible and has improved circulation throughout.

“THE CONEY ISLAND OF THE WEST” “THE CONEY ISLAND OF THE WEST”

Adjacent to the pool is a 1920s grand ballroom that also received a refresh. New floors, windows and bathrooms add elegance to the space, while the historic wooden framing remains (“That’s the coolest part about it,” Erica says).

Those who haven’t yet splashed in the pool or attended an event in the ballroom have probably sipped cold, crisp Eldorado Artesian Springs bottled water. It originates as snowmelt east of the Continental Divide before passing through sandstone and entering the aquifer, which is surrounded by a 200-foot-thick layer of clay that protects it from other groundwater sources. The water is naturally filtered, and a recent hydrogeological study found it to be an impressive 6,000 years old.

“The spring water is a true quality source,” Erica shares, adding that earlier this year, Eldorado won a gold medal at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Convention, where waters are tested for taste, smell and texture. “You could now say we have the best-tasting water in the world.”

With the long-awaited reopening of the pool, Eldorado turns the page to a new chapter while paying homage to its history and the nostalgia that keeps people returning year after year. But perhaps the most alluring aspect of the pool has always been its location—blended into the base of the Rocky Mountains and surrounded by Colorado’s natural beauty. “It has been a labor of love,” Erica says. “We’re excited to reopen and have everyone come back because they have so much fun. The pool holds a special place in everyone's hearts.”

Taste Some of the Top Wines from Burgundy, Without Ever Leaving Town This Fall at the Boulder Burgundy Festival

For three days this fall—October 18-20— Boulder will be the place to be for wine lovers from around the world as winemakers, wine professionals, collectors and enthusiasts will all converge in town for the annual Boulder Burgundy Festival.

Entering its 14th year, the festival is put on by Brett Zimmerman, the founder of the festival, Master Sommelier, and owner of Boulder Wine Merchant. For him, it’s a chance to share special wine with ever-wider audiences.

“Burgundy is just a different animal than some of the wine regions around the world,” explains Brett. “So, it’s about creating more awareness, creating more education, and even getting a little more mileage out of certain bottles. If 50 people can taste a bottle that we only get six of, for me, that's a win.”

Attendees will get the chance to taste these rare and up-and-coming wines all throughout the weekend. This year, events include a marquee winemaker dinner at Frasca, a lunch at Corrida and a seminar and grand tasting on the last day, where participants will have the opportunity to taste more than 200 wines from Burgundy.

“The ultimate goal is education and excitement for the region,” explains Brett. “Burgundy is very much a region that relies on discovery to find the next thing. It only takes a little bit of time for a wine to go from being kind of unknown to not accessible by anybody, from a price or quantity perspective. So we are always looking for who's the next

husband, wife, sister or brother, making some of those wines and jumping onto that bandwagon to ride it as long as we can until those wines are also not accessible.”

In addition to introducing a wider group of wine lovers to Burgundy and fostering community within the wine community near and far, the Boulder Burgundy Festival is a non-profit organization that raises money for community causes and wine education. Brett explains the various causes tend to revolve around “local education, kids and illness.” In years past, the causes supported by the event have included There with Care, Impact on Education, The Growe Foundation and Sophie’s Neighborhood, among others.

“It’s inspiring when you are able to generate resources for local charities,” emphasizes Brett. “It’s enough to make a meaningful contribution that can really impact people. I think that's a big reason behind the event, and that sets it apart from some of the other for-profit events around the country.”

Tickets are sold a la carte to each event, and often sell out fast, so watch BoulderBurgundyFestival. com and @BoulderBurgundy on Instagram for announcements about ticket sales, or join Boulder Wine Merchant’s mailing list at BoulderWine.com.

Meet Artist Noelle Phares, Who’s Finding the Abstract in the West’s Changing Landscapes

Nature's

Timestamps

For many artists, the call to create comes first—the medium and subject matter fall into place later. For Denver artist Noelle Phares, the arrival at a career as an artist took a different path.

“By the time I decided to become an artist, it wasn't really because I thought, 'I have to be a painter,'” Noelle explains. “It was more a feeling of, ‘God, I love the natural world.’”

Noelle’s work, which draws on paints, pastels, inks, pencils and sometimes even thread to capture entrancing scenes of nature, meditates on “the ever-encroaching presence of humanity into previously pristine open spaces.”

“I like to use abstract shapes and features that resemble architectural lines as nods to the human footprint on that landscape, instead of presenting these themes directly. First and foremost, the painting should be beautiful, and secondarily it should invite the viewer to ask deeper questions about what’s really going on with that specific terrain."

“I tend to use palettes that are rooted in the natural tones of the landscape itself but also draw on the emotion that I want the viewer to feel as they look at the painting,” Noelle continues. “For example when I want the viewer to feel nostalgic, I introduce a lot more haze and atmospheric colors than I would in a painting that I want the viewer to feel like they are in now, in which the colors would probably be bolder and the lines harder.”

“I like to use abstract shapes and

fea-

tures that

resemble architectural lines as nods to the human footprint on that landscape, instead of presenting these themes directly.”

Noelle’s abstract but highly analytic approach makes sense with her professional background; she holds an undergraduate degree in biochemistry and a master's in environmental data science. Before a leap of faith into full-time artistry, she spent 10 years working in tech and thinking about landscapes as geospatial data sets. Throughout that time, painting was something Noelle did for fun but didn’t see as a career path. “I just didn't have anyone in my life who was a working artist,” Noelle explains. “My academic focus was always on the sciences. I wanted to learn about the building blocks of life and those topics demanded my full attention through my twenties. I felt as if I needed to understand how the universe worked before deciding how I would leverage that information in my career later on.” But after a decade, Noelle reports the office atmosphere, computer screens and “abstract techie work” wore on her: “I kind of threw up my hands one day, feeling that this is just not what I am.”

So she made the leap. Today, her art can be found not just on the walls of galleries and collectors’ homes but on skis, SmartWool socks, Merrell gear, beer cans, wine bottles and more. For someone like Noelle, who reports an insatiable craving for new–be it food, travel or art—the product collabs offer the chance to envision different methods and outcomes for her work.

“There's nothing better than being out skiing and randomly looking down from the lift and seeing someone wearing a pair of skis that I've designed. That's happened twice, so it doesn't happen that much,” Noelle laughs. “But when it did, I thought, 'Dang, that's pretty cool.'”

Yet still, one of the greatest changes in her art career so far, attests Noelle, has been becoming a parent. She and her husband welcomed a daughter in early 2023, and it opened a whole new set of questions for her to explore in her work.

“A lot of people told me that having a kid would change my perspective for the better. And I just didn't know how to believe them, because you just don't know what you don't know,” Noelle says.

“I wasn't someone who had a strong vision about who I would be as a parent, but luckily those people were right. Having a child has absolutely underscored how important it is to me to make sure that she has clean air to breathe and water to drink. And maybe even mountains that she can go back to where she doesn’t have to hear the sound of a road.”

BMoCa’s current exhibit, “Tracking Time” features Noelle’s paintings and sketches, alongside multi-disciplinary artist  Chelsea Kaiah, both commenting on

“our evolving relationship to the natural world through the lenses of environmental studies and Native American cosmology, respectively”.

Noelle focused her study on the Colorado River. Noelle details, “I immediately thought of the Colorado River as an apt subject for many reasons. Firstly, the environmental, political and socioeconomic issues surrounding the river and the use of its waters abound in the West today. With recent mega-droughts and shifting water policies, the 40 million people who rely on the river are well aware of its increasing scarcity. Secondly, Colorado cuts a course through 1,450 miles of shifting terrain that runs through seven states and 11 national parks, from high alpine mountains to vast desert to the Delta in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. This diversity of landscapes along her course presents an array of ecological perspectives from which to paint.”

These new paintings detail locations in five Western states, ranging from our familiar Colorado landscapes to Glenwood Canyon with I-70 running alongside the river to the Grand Canyon, ending with landmarks found all the way in Nevada at the Hoover Dam.

Noelle made her way around from location to location to take in the surroundings and begin her sketches. She details the studies, “I got in my camper van last fall and drove a couple of thousand miles to spend time in these places and gather reference imagery. I sketched and wrote and marveled at how bright the stars are in the evenings next to the river in places far away from settlements.”

The paintings and sketches are accompanied by Noelle’s original poetry, as poetry is a part of Noelle’s practice of creating her art and bringing in her personal experience with the different locations depicted throughout the collection.

Noelle wraps up her creation of “Tracking Time”, “The exercise left me with the knowledge that one cannot 'capture' her subject through this work, I can only contribute in some small way to enhancing our greater understanding and reverence for her. I am merely an observer and one of the many millions of people who contribute to her downfall as I water my lawn and ride her waves. I hoped not to be extractive in this relationship with the river, but instead observant and respectful. These works are timestamps, small blips of recognition on an ever-evolving map of being of both myself and the river.”

To learn more about Noelle, visit her website at NoellePhares.com or find her on Instagram at @noellephares. Visit her exhibition at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, which is open until September 2nd.

Who We're Cheering for in Paris

Boulderites

With over 300 days of sunshine per year and access to seemingly endless hiking and biking trails, climbing crags, reservoirs and more, it’s no surprise that a number of athletes call Boulder their home base. It’s an incredible place to train, no matter your level— especially when you’re talking Olympic level!

As we collectively turn our eyes to Paris for the summer festivities—and prep for the eight-hour time difference—there are a number of Boulder-based athletes to cheer for, no matter your favorite event.

CONTINUED >

Taylor Knibb

Qualifying for one Olympic sport would be impressive enough, but Taylor Knibb is heading to Paris for two separate disciplines. Last August, she qualified for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team at the World Triathlon Olympic Games Test Event, held on the Paris Olympic course. This May, she secured her spot on the U.S. Cycling Olympic Team with her victory at the 2024 USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships, held in Charleston, West Virginia.

This is far from her first time on the national stage. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, she was the youngest US Olympic triathlete to compete, placing 16th in the individual event and earning the silver medal at the debut Mixed Relay event.

Knibb was also the youngest woman to win the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in St. George, Utah, back in 2022. It’s very unique to be able to compete in short-course, draft-legal triathlons and in long-course IRONMAN triathlons. It speaks to her versatility as an athlete, honed over many years of competing.

Her journey began at a young age when she saw her mom compete in an IRONMAN race and was inspired to try a kids’ race. It has since brought her all over the world, keeping Boulder as her home base.

Morgan Pearson

Knibb isn’t the only Mixed Relay teammate heading back to the Games this summer. Morgan Pearson had a disappointing performance in the Triathlon, where brutal conditions and a penalty compounded, landing him in 42nd place. The next week he came back and ran the team to Silver.

That’s since set him on an upward trajectory. Like Knibb, Pearson qualified for Paris right out the gate at the 2023 World Triathlon Paris Test Event last August, and he’s picked up some more hardware since then. This May, he won the 2024 World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama race, making him the first U.S. man to win a World Triathlon Series since 2009.

Pearson lived and trained in Boulder when he did his undergrad at CU—Sko Buffs! There he competed in cross-country and track and field and was a seven-time NCAA All-American.

Colin Duffy

At age 17, Colin Duffy became the youngest climber to qualify for the Olympic debut of climbing in Tokyo. He got an early start on the sport, beginning at age five, before joining Team ABC in Boulder at age eight.

Known for “comp” climbing (aka the indoor Bouldering, Lead and Speed disciplines we’ll see in Paris), Duffy has also climbed multiple 5.14s outside, as well as a V14 boulder problem.

Duffy has won four IFSC World Cup Medals. Two were gold medals at the Innsbruck World Cup in 2022 where he set a record for being the first male to win both bouldering and lead in the same World Cup event. More recently, he won the silver medal in the combined event at the IFSC World Championships to secure his spot in Paris.

Brooke Raboutou

Unsurprisingly, Brooke Raboutou also grew up climbing on Team ABC, where she trained under Robyn Erbesfield and Didier Raboutou, her world-class climber parents. They run ABC Kids Climbing and the elite Team ABC Boulder and split their time between Boulder and St. Antonin, France.

Raboutou competed in Tokyo in 2021 where she finished in fifth place at their debut climbing showcase. She’s also made a name for herself outside as the youngest woman to climb 5.14b at age 11 and was the second female to top out Box Therapy, a boulder problem in Rocky Mountain National Park that she's proposed downgrading from V16 to V15.

Last April, she won her first-ever IFSC Climbing World Cup gold medal in Hachioji, Japan. At the time of print, she was still trying to clinch her spot at the Games, having just won the Olympic Qualifier Series in Shanghai.

Fuel for Adventure

Rock Climbing Extraordinaire Sasha DiGiulian Also Makes Delicious, Nutritious Protein Bars

At just 31 years old, Sasha DiGiulian has quite the impressive resume—the Boulder resident is a world-champion professional rock climber, author and star of the new documentary “Here to Climb,” an intimate look into her record-breaking career released on HBO Max last month.

She’s also the founder of Send Bars (SendBars.com), a line of protein bars free of sugar, soy, dairy and gluten in four yummy flavors: banana bread, salted peanut, lemon cherry and peanut cacao crunch. Sasha created the bars in 2022 with friends Arianne Jones, an Olympian and holistic nutritionist, Chelsea Balboni, a brand strategist and Alex Hanifin. Available in Boulder at Wonder Press juice shop, Mecha and The Spot gyms, Jones & Co. boutique, Alive and Well pharmacy and the Boulder Rock Club, the bars reflect Sasha’s passions for wellness and adventure.

As Sasha celebrates her new documentary, she also reflects on her journey to bring Send Bars to market, one of her favorite climbs to

date, and how career challenges have only made her a stronger athlete and businesswoman.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR OWN PROTEIN BARS?

As a professional climber, I’ve always been invested in health for athletic performance. I started making my own bars as a teenager when I couldn’t find anything I wanted to eat. Everything was full of preservatives, refined sugars and “natural” flavorings. As the bar market expanded, I still found that anything healthier just tasted like paint. When my friends asked me to make them bars, I thought it would be amazing to do something with this idea one day.

HOW ARE SEND BARS MADE?

Our ingredients are certified organic, and we strive to source as locally as possible. Our lemon cherry bar is flavored with pure lemon oil that’s derived from pressing lemon rinds in a process similar to olive oil extraction. Our

banana bread bar is made with real dried whole bananas. This dedication to quality ensures that our bars are made from real, wholesome food.

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY FOR SOMEONE TO INCORPORATE SEND BARS INTO THEIR DAILY LIFE?

Most people enjoy them as a healthy snack—perfect for a tasty mid-morning or mid-afternoon energy boost. They’re also ideal for pre or post-workout nutrition and are popular among adventurers, who take them hiking, climbing and mountain biking.

HOW DO THEY HELP ATHLETES LIKE YOURSELF?

Send Bars provide athletes with sustained energy and essential nutrients for peak performance. Naturally sweetened with dates, they avoid the energy crash common with syrup-sweetened bars. Each bar offers 10 grams of plant protein and healthy fats, and they’re easily digestible. Perhaps most importantly, Send Bars are damn delicious!

THE MOST MEMORABLE PLACE WHERE YOU’VE EATEN A SEND BAR.

On the summit of Rayu—a big wall climb that I did with Brette Harrington and Matilda Söderlund in the Picos de Europa region of Spain. We spent about a month working on this climb and managed to “send it” (complete it successfully), establishing the hardest big wall climb achieved by a team of women. We cheered, hugged and celebrated with Send Bars at the summit before beginning our journey down, looking across the horizon at sunset with the ocean in the distance.

YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON OVERCOMING SETBACKS.

In May 2020, I underwent the first of five surgeries to reconstruct my hips. During the bulk of my recovery time, I focused on what I could control: healing through nutrition, physical therapy and my mindset. I wrote my coming-of-age memoir “Take the Lead” (Boulder Bookstore has signed copies!), and I built Send Bars. Redefining my identity in a way that brought me purpose was really important to me, even when I couldn’t find it in the physical sense.

Order online at sendbars.com or find Send Bars at Wonder Press, Jones and Co, and more.

ON THE BRICKSMOUNTA INVIBES

High Country Serves Up Comfort Cuisine and Community Spirit

With its debut this past April on the bricks of Pearl Street, High Country is quickly becoming Boulder’s latest spot for those seeking elevated comfort cuisine and welcoming vibes. This new venture comes from the dynamic team behind Gemini, a celebrated Spanish tapas-focused local favorite, which is conveniently located right next door. The concept for High Country was born out of a desire to create a space that resonates with the lifestyle and energy of Colorado.

Executive chef and Colorado native Brian Pierce, along with managing partner Michael Mehiel, executive pastry chef Catherine Neckes, and business jack-of-all-trades Elizabeth Neckes, sought to design a restaurant that not only reflected their culinary passion but also the community spirit of Boulder and beyond. The two ladies also happen to be identical twins who are married to their respective fellow partners, providing the partnership with a unique, enduring and family-based bond.

The journey to High Country’s partnership began years ago in New York City, where the founders met and honed their skills in

various culinary settings. The couples eventually moved away from each other, but the desire to create something special in Boulder brought them back together. When Hapa Sushi relocated, leaving a prime spot available on Pearl Street, the team jumped at the opportunity.

High Country encompasses a unique blend of mountain vibes, innovative comfort food and a welcoming atmosphere, making it a must-visit destination. Michael explains that the goal was to liken the restaurant to everyone’s favorite ski town joint, minus the powder and the often requisite wagon wheels and spurs. “The mountains,

“THE MOUNTAINS, THE PEOPLE, THE HIGH ENERGY, THE FUN.”

the people, the high energy, the fun,” Michael explains. “We wanted to do something adjacent to that and leverage that feeling.”

High Country aims to provide an inclusive and modern space with fare that caters to a wide range of tastes and diets. The menu is a celebration of comfort food with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. The selection stays the same from lunch to dinner and features juicy burgers and sandwiches, innovative vegetarian and vegan options, bright bowls and salads that feature fresh and locally sourced produce and hearty mains with your choice

of side. There’s literally something for everyone. The gluten-free and veg options that are called out on the menu aren’t just there for those who need them. The thought and execution that goes into everything grants permission for any veg-based dish to be just as crave-able for a seasoned omnivore as the decadent milehigh burger (two smash patties loaded with all the fixings including bacon, pepper jack, and both pickled and frizzled onions).

A recent dinner visit started on the tail end of their killer Golden Hour (2-5 pm, Monday-Friday: half-priced apps and snacks, $10

craft cocktails, $4 all draft beer, $6 all wine by the glass). The diverse cocktail list is intriguing and well-crafted by bar manager Francis Verrall. The tropical Disco in Frisco is the perfect pairing for a prime patio spot in the Colorado sun. One can also opt for something equally festive from the zerozero mocktail menu, like the pineapple and coconut-inspired Last Call.

The novel hippie dip app—luxurious, spicy roasted carrot and sunflower seed hummus paired with fresher-than-fresh veggies—is the perfect beginning, showcasing crisp raw turnips, radishes and snap peas from the Boulder Farmer’s Market. Every wing aficionado will also gravitate toward the dedicated section of the menu that offers four different rub/ sauce options for the brined, confited and fried stunners. There are piquant pepper heat options, but don’t miss the mildest of the bunch, the zesty ranch rub. Chef Brian explains that the rub isn’t just a mixture of dried seasonings. The kitchen goes so far as to dehydrate herbs and spices and fry

up fresh garlic and shallots for the umami-laden powder. The proof is evident in the deep and intensified flavor.

The hospitality is genuine and heartfelt, and the kitchen’s timing forges a splendid path between dishes. The main course summit bowl showcases a generous portion of roasted seasonal veggies over a mélange of quinoa, chickpeas and vibrant green goddess dressing, studded with pepitas and sunflower seeds. The flavors are distinct from the vegan app, but just as gratifying. The selection of mains also runs the gamut, but the well-versed team mentions not to miss the BBQ.

Yes, the ultimate highlight of the menu is the BBQ. Chef Brian chooses a straightforward cabinet smoker; the kitchen doesn’t have the luxury of an ancient, seasoned, wood-burning BBQ pit. Regardless, the team is able to blow away expectations by creating a level of smoked meat magic that you can put up against the most accomplished pitmaster. The bonanza brisket is fork-tender and dripping with flavor, paired with a red-eye BBQ sauce that provides the perfect amount of heat. The smokehouse ribs, a meaty St. Louis-cut half-rack paired

with mustard and vinegar-spiked gold rush BBQ sauce, showcases the perfect “bark”— that rich and darkened surface on a slowand-low-cooked cut. While the sides are all equally enticing (fries, mac and cheese, Spanish rice), the perfect combo

of sweet and savory is the buttery skillet cornbread, including a side of strawberry fresno chili jam.

The dessert menu tips its hat to throwback classics featuring executive pastry chef Catherine’s take on the lemon bar, carrot cake and your option of a chocolate malted or creamsicle milkshake. The standard chocolate sundae is elevated

through the roof with rye whiskey caramel and crunchy candied pecans, all atop a luscious brownie.

Only a few months in, High Country is already collaborating with Boulder organizations like Cultural Caravan and Street Wise Arts. The plan is to build on the restaurant the best that they can within the community at large, continuing to focus on the High Country vibe and lifestyle. Thursdays at High Country "Sparkle, Smoke and Shine" with a weekly event that started in June featuring tacos and quesadillas with fresh house-made tortillas, DV8’s Sparkle glitter liqueur and Bear Creek Distillery’s white whiskey.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, High Country invites you to join in on the relaxed mountain mood they create with their all-encompassing and satisfying fare, their inclusive atmosphere and their natural hospitality. This already beloved spot on Pearl Street was built with community in mind, making it built to last.

BRING

THE OLYMPICS HOME

Ready to play? On your marks…get set…go!

PHOTOGRAPHY BY POPPY & CO. BY KELSEY HUFFER

The 2024 Summer Olympics, set to take place in Paris, kick off on July 26. Bring the spirit of the XXXIII Olympiad back to Boulder with these ideas to get kids outside and on the move. Whether they’re little artists, outdoorsy explorers or track stars in training, these games spark the imagination and fuel the stoke.

FORLITTL E CLIMBERS

Event: Climbing

Equipment: Varies; all available for rent How to Play: A newer addition to the tradition, climbing made its way into the Summer Olympics in 2020 and will be returning again this year in Paris. Where better to get kids climbing than right here in Boulder, a region that has launched past and present Olympic climbers like Brooke Raboutou, Natalia Grossman and Colin Duffy. Head to ABC Kids Climbing, run by Raboutou’s family (ABCKidsClimbing.com) for private lessons, camps, open gym and even half- and full-day guided outdoor sessions in places like Boulder Canyon, Eldorado Canyon and the Flatirons. Other area gyms, like The Spot ( TheSpotGym.com) and Boulder Rock Club ( BoulderRockClub.com) also offer camps, lessons and teams for kids to grow their climbing capabilities. Or simply, head to the park and find a playground with climbing walls!

FORCREATIVE KIDS

Event: Roll a Masterpiece

Equipment: Two blank wooden dice, markers, paper

How to Play: Bring the creative expression found in official events like “artistic gymnastics” or “artistic swimming” home—no massive mats or swimming pools required. With a game like Roll a Masterpiece, shared by Tinker Art Studio in South Boulder ( TinkerArtStudio. com), being a competitor really means being a collaborator and curator. To play, mark each side of one die with a different color. On the other die, mark each side with a different design or shape, like a wavy or zig-zag line. Then you roll the dice! Mark your paper each time with the color and shape indicated by the dice in whatever way feels right. Roll until your masterpiece is complete!

Modifications: Play with family or friends all using the same prompt to see just how unique everyone’s artistic eye can be. Or, mix up your medium! This can also be played with sidewalk chalk to make it more collaborative and outdoor-friendly. Or try crayons, paints or pastels for even more variety. Play with regular dice by making a key for yourself—for example, one dot (or “pip”) equals the color blue or a squiggly line, or make your own custom dice out of paper.

FORTINY T R ACK STARS

Event: Hopscotch

Equipment: Chalk and a stone or other small object

How to Play: Take a cue from Generation Wild (GenerationWild.com), a movement from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) to reconnect kids with the great outdoors. They nabbed the Guinness World Records title for longest hopscotch game with a 7,037.51-meter (23,088 feet and 11.3 inches) hopscotch course at Chatfield State Park in Littleton. To play, simply draw a box with “1” in it, then two boxes side-by-side with “2” and “3” on top of it. Continue varying one box and two, labeling them all the way up to “10.” Begin by throwing a stone, bean bag or other small object into box 1 without touching the sides. (If it touches the sides, that player is disqualified.) Then hop, on one foot per box, all the way to 10, before turning around and hopping back to 1, always making sure to never touch the sides of the boxes. When you get back to 1, pick up the object while balancing on one foot—then you’ve completed the game!

Modifications: Your course doesn’t need to be four miles long like Generation Wild’s, but you can dial up the competition by seeing just how far you can take your course or how fast you can complete the course. You can also change the shape; while a straight line is traditional, try a spiral or triangle.

Giving Back with Happy Day Plants

In 2020, when Bailey Birmingham tossed up her graduation cap, her family cheered for the start of her brand-new journey. However, for individuals with Down syndrome like Bailey, the post-grad job hunt proved challenging—significantly more so than Bailey’s peers. Bailey’s mother, Jessica, struggled with that journey until the day she stumbled upon Ramble on Pearl Street, a clothing store that hosted an apprentice program for adults with disabilities. It was on this momentous day that inspiration struck and Jessica came to realize the excessive need for local job opportunities for individuals just like her daughter. Thus the seed of Happy Day Plants sprouted.

Planting Happiness

Jessica, a dedicated plant enthusiast, and the mind behind Happy Day Plants, had toyed with the idea of opening her own shop for years. Yet amidst the whirlwind of raising four children, the dream remained inked on the pages of her journal. But in 2021, following Bailey’s job hunt hurdles, Jessica sprang into action, hosting Happy Day Plants pop-ups around Boulder County, while testing the waters of the community’s plant scene. Soon after, fate smiled upon her when a storefront on Main Street in Downtown Longmont opened and Happy Day Plants found its forever home.

Stepping into the shop is like entering a botanist's dream. From easy-care succulents to lush tropical foliage and a fully stocked potting station, Happy Day Plants caters to every plant aficionado, whether a novice or a seasoned pro. The team, brimming with knowledge and warmth, eagerly shares insider tips on finding your perfect plant and troubleshooting any hiccups your leafy pals may encounter.

But Happy Day Plants isn’t just a haven for plants—it’s a nurturing ground for personal growth. At the shop, the staff are provided an opportunity to learn about caring for living things while also interacting with customers, which fosters valuable skills and relationships. Each year differences are made in the lives of Happy Day Plants’ employees, as Jessica recalls staff consistently stepping out of their comfort zones and learning things that they thought they might not ever be able to do. “I’ve watched

each of them take ownership of Happy Day Plants and step into big responsibilities. From teaching a workshop for the very first time to counting cash back for customers,” Jessica says, and for her, “watching each grow and develop communal relationships of their own is the greatest reward of all.”

In March, Happy Day Plants launched their Grow With Us Program, where businesses can partner with the team in three different ways: Nature’s Touch, Happy Haven and Botanical Bliss. With Nature’s Touch, businesses can purchase premium plants to spruce up their spaces. Happy Haven offers plant care services, ensuring fruition without the hassle. And with Botanical Bliss, businesses can sell Happy Day Plants' curated collections on their own. With seven Grow With Us Partners already on board, the program is already a roaring success!

Despite the inevitable challenges of small business ownership, Jessica remains steadfast in her mission. She recalls small bumps along the way as well as some pretty big setbacks, however, she’s learned that “during tough times it is so important to go back and think about why Happy Day Plants exists,” remembering “that the good that happens in our little shop will always be bigger than any challenge that comes along.”

BRAID SWEEP’S

As temperatures hit an all-time high for the year, July calls for getting creative while getting that hair off of your shoulders. Here is Sweep’s step-by-step guide of braids for all of your summer needs, from the hiking trail to the summer festival grounds.

Pull-Through Braid with Space Buns

Red Rocks evenings are in full swing, and we know just the hairstyle! Part hair down the center. Create pull-through braids on each side of the head. Tie elastic at the end of the braids to create a ponytail at the nape of the neck. For extra volume in the buns, tease the hair in the ponytail before twisting it into a bun. Secure with hair pins and... Voilà!

Reverse

Fishtail Braids

For all of your patio needs, all of the girls at lunch will love this style. Part the top half of the hair in two sections. Create fishtail braids (or braids of choice) and tie them together in the back of the hair. Add a fashion accessory around a ponytail for a little extra fun!

Bandana

Braids

Get your festival on with this cute hairdo! Place a bandana on the forehead and tie it in back. Create as many braids as desired in the back of the head, teasing the ends to avoid using elastics.

Simple Braided Updo

For your Saturday wandering the farmer’s market, this will be a great go-to. Part the hair down the center or side part, if preferred. Create braid(s) on the side of the head and secure with elastic. Twist the hair with braids into a simple bun, securing it with hair pins. Add an accessory for a classy touch. One of our favorites is the Mesa Brass Hair Pin from Cedar and Hyde.
