Let's Get Learning

It’s official, we are hitting that point in the summer where we are feeling activity and travel fatigue and craving a bit of normalcy and routine, just in time for the school year to get started. As the kids head back into the classroom, maybe we consider doing a bit of learning ourselves. After all, we’re never too old to stop learning, in fact, it keeps us young!

We are offered opportunities galore to explore new ways of learning, and, lucky us, it is that time of year again, Month of Modern is here! With “Imagine” as a central theme, Month of Modern has an incredible line up of events that bring you back to that childlike wonder and intrigue of learning: from taking a look into a new world of possibilities to learning about the implementation of AI in the architecture space to taking a peek into artist’s worlds and seeing how other people’s minds and creativity work.

It is still summer after all. We aren’t quite done with those warm weather outdoor activities, and every day is an opportunity to learn something new in nature; even better to do so through community, like Wonderland Outdoors.

And age is just a number, right? BMoCa is making sure to keep learning accessible at all ages and for people living with dementia, through their Spark! program. Learning through more traditional and tactile ways, this program teaches about local artists and gives an opportunity to make art together, pulling from what they have learned.

The learning possibilities are endless. This month we are gaining fresh perspectives, opening up our mind to new possibilities and innovations, learning new outdoor activities through community, and even prioritizing our health through new learning opportunities.

So grab your backpack, sharpen those pencils and let’s get learning.

OWN THE LIFE

THE POWER OF JEWELRY

There are many ways to mark the passage of time and life’s changes, whether it’s getting a fresh haircut before college, buying a new suit before starting a job, or cooking up a family recipe to honor someone who's recently departed.

Since she was seventeen, Erica Simon has explored using jewelry as a vessel for life's most important moments and memories. Growing up in a small, seaside community in Maine, she was surrounded by talented jewelers. She worked in a gallery owned by a metalsmith and learned about design and redesign, discovering the work that goes into giving jewelry a second, third, or fourth life.

Creating Modern Heirlooms & Finding Personal Talismans, with Erica Simon

She’s always had a self-proclaimed appreciation for vintage things, but she truly fell in love with the French medals of love, or medaille d’amour, created by Alphonse Augis. They're based on a poem called “The Eternal Song,” that's written by Rosemonde Gérard. In the poem, there's a line that translates to, “I love you more, today more than yesterday and less than tomorrow."

Simon started wearing one of these pendants when she moved back to Boulder from the south of France and felt like it gave her luck during a challenging time. As the Covid pandemic pushed us further and further apart, physically and ideologically, the piece reminded her to be open and let love grow. It eventually inspired her to begin her current business, with some encouragement from her daughter.

In her studio above the New Local, Simon gets to be a confidant, an investigator and a powerful steward for passing forward family heirlooms. She knows of engagements well before they take place and helps families and individuals celebrate milestones and commemorate those they’ve lost. Each piece of jewelry

she sources or helps redesign is more than its raw materials—it’s about being able to carry a memory or a person with you, experiencing them anew every time you see the ring, watch, pendant, etc.

Recently, she helped a mother and grandmother gift their daughter/granddaughter a redesign for her 21st birthday that combined two family rings into something more modern.

When Simon presented it to the youngest woman in the family, all three were in the room together. The ring didn’t just celebrate a birthday. It cemented their close relationship with a permanent object—at least until it’s reimagined again for the next generation.

That’s the thing about quality jewelry: it lasts. Simon recognizes that gold is expensive, especially right now, but it can be reformed and reused, unlike tarnished, gold-plated pieces that will eventually be thrown out.

In the same way we’re seeing people reject fast fashion, we’re also seeing them embrace age-old jewelry techniques that reuse centuries-old materials. Simon lights up as she explains the return of the rose cut and the star set, two techniques that have truly stood the test of time and require care and handcrafting.

Simon speaks affectionately about the Boulder community and the many female makers and jewelers who are opening up stores. She describes the environment as loving, explaining how they’ll refer clients and support each other.

“I’m not curing any diseases, but I am making these beautiful connections,” says Simon.

What Simon may not realize is she’s actually part of curing one of the more powerful afflictions we currently face as a society: loneliness. Each time she brings someone into her space, they’re invited into an intimate moment to reflect over a cup of tea and maybe find a piece they didn’t know they were missing.

This year's theme, "Imagine," is sure to inspire and engage attendees with fresh ideas and new perspectives. From architecture and interior design to the built environment, artificial intelligence and graphic design, a wide variety of disciplines and backgrounds will be celebrated.

"Design, at its heart, is all about understanding what people need and finding ways to meet those needs," says Stephanie Bingham, MoM vanguard and marketing director at HMH Architecture + Interiors. "Whether it's improving safety,

promoting health or simply enriching everyday experiences, design is about making life better."

All events are open to the public, so if you have an interest in design or ideas to share, you are highly encouraged to attend. RSVP or buy your tickets in advance, as seats are limited and have sold out in the past.

Stephanie envisions MoM as more than just a series of events— it's a treasure trove of inspiration and connections. "Imagine being surrounded by your creative tribe, where ideas flow freely and new opportunities emerge," Stephanie says, capturing the essence of MoM's community-driven ethos.

BRIDGING GAPS AND

EXPLORING ART AND ITS LIMITLESS POSSIBILITIES WITH SPARK!

SPARKING HOPE

Art transcends gender, age, ability, race and class. It bridges gaps that traditionally divide us and shines a light on topics often labeled as taboo or too controversial. Moreover, marginalized groups often find their voice or newfound freedom in the many mediums that make up art. Whether you are the creator or the beholder, the arts have something for you.

According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 55 million people living with dementia worldwide. Additionally, there is an irregularity of who this affects. Women have a higher risk of developing dementia and a higher rate of mortality as a result of it. Women also contribute up to 70% of care hours for individuals with dementia. Startling statistics such as these serve as proof of the growing need for support systems and programs like BMoCA’s SPARK!

The local contemporary art museum, BMoCA, has been a pillar of the community for decades. Attracting over 100,000 visitors per year, inclusivity and accessibility are at the forefront of the museum’s mission. However, these are not the only things that make BMoCA stand out. Senior Manager of Education, Zachary Davidson, explains: “We are a non-collecting institution, which is unique for a museum. Our focus is on presenting rotating exhibitions and programs that stimulate active participation in the global and local dialogue about contemporary art, instead of purchasing and

“WE SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS IN MANY WAYS, INCLUDING THROUGH EXHIBITIONS AND COMMISSIONS, AND STRIVE TO BRING THESE PROGRAMS

collecting art. We support local artists in many ways, including through exhibitions and commissions, and strive to bring these programs to the Boulder community and surrounding underserved counties.”

One of the many free educational programs offered by BMoCA is SPARK!, a specialized initiative aimed at supporting the needs of individuals with cognitive diseases and their caregivers. Davidson also oversees the SPARK! program. Providing some details about SPARK!, Davidson explains that the organization “introduces local contemporary artists paired with constructive conversations about their involvement within the greater Colorado community." He continues, "Following this, our educators facilitate an art-making activity designed to pull from media and themes from the exhibition participants have just discussed.”

SPARK! began in 2013 and is subsidized in part by the Institute of Museum

and Library Services, the Maihaugen Foundation and the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District. Since the start, SPARK! has been providing creative workshops and free exhibition tours for individuals living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. By 2015, BMoCA established a partnership with the local Alzheimer’s Association, becoming the first museum in Colorado to offer SPARK!. This dynamism, banded together by the SPARK! Alliance, incites hope for those with memory loss as well as promise for the foundation of similar programs worldwide.

SPARK! and its successes stretch far beyond the four walls of BMoCA. The curriculum has been incorporated into assisted living facilities and public libraries across the Front Range area. “Due to the audience’s sensitive nature and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was important for BMoCA to take our time cultivating regional partnerships and building trust among this community, Davidson explains. "In 2022, BMoCA formed partnerships with five Jefferson County Libraries and two Douglas County assisted living facilities, which resulted in 31 program occurrences that served 124 participants.” These achievements and more would effectuate a program expansion that same year.

“People experiencing memory loss can have reactions to all forms of the arts that elicit and prompt long-term memory access, granting them a chance to form connections with others through

sharing their experiences, either explicitly in a group discussion or implicitly with producing artwork in a communal environment,” states Davidson. These sensory experiences have the potential to stimulate haptic memories for individuals which can be extremely rewarding and healing. As evident with SPARK!, building an effective and open discourse on the topic of memory loss and diseases can have huge benefits not only for those diagnosed but for their caregivers and family members as well.

A Grand Dame Home in Boulder

“At

“ I knew I had taken on a great responsibility when purchasing the house four years ago. It was a house designed out of love in the early ‘90s by an architect for his wife, lovingly referred to as the “grand dame” in honor of its femininity and strength. The paint colors we chose, from the English green in the dining room to the smile-inducing “Marry Me Pink” on the primary bedroom ceiling, reflect the home’s mood and have all garnered numerous compliments. I feel our grand dame is radiant in her new palette, laughing with us about some of the color names. As the interior designer, I cherished having a color expert partner like Tami to bounce ideas off of. Our collaboration, particularly on palette selection, was critical to the project’s success. I would select a hue and ask, ‘Do you think this will work?’ Tami would guide me to a different shade or affirm my choice with, ‘Yes, that’s perfect.’ While there are undoubtedly many skilled painters, I sought someone who would offer honest opinions and inspire confidence. I believe in Tami because she is truly an expert in her field. Once we finalized the color palette, I primarily worked with the Maurer crew. They are fantastic. Tami organizes everything meticulously and trusts her team to perform their tasks proficiently, and I, in turn, trusted the team completely.”

The Blue Bungalow

A THOUGHTFUL REMODEL TRANSFORMS THIS HISTORIC BOULDER HOME

In Boulder’s University Hill Historic District, a 1912 bungalow maintained the charming curb appeal of brick homes from that era, but its interior told a different story. A choppy layout, low ceilings and awkward addition from the 1980s weren’t functional for the modern family. To give the bungalow the efficiency and aesthetic appeal desired today, homeowner Paul Summerside sought the expertise of the Cottonwood Custom Builders Inc. team and Ely Merheb, founder of Verso Architecture and interiors firm.

“This is our 29th year of custom building in the Boulder and Front Range area,” says Jeff Hindman, Cottonwood owner and president. “We specialize in sustainable custom residential projects and are experts in high-performance homes that incorporate a tight building envelope, renewable energy systems, green building materials and high-quality finishes.”

Together, Cottonwood and Verso completed a total interior and exterior remodel that increased the home’s footprint to five bedrooms and 4,000 square feet, which includes a three-story, 640-square-foot addition and 500-square-foot deck and carport. An effortless layout, sustainable features and design cohesion (the exterior blue color honors the home’s recognizable hue and is also used on the kitchen cabinets) now bring elevated living to the property. Here, Ely, Paul and Colin Crist, Cottonwood's project manager for the renovation, give more insight into the bungalow’s transformation.

WHAT HISTORIC FEATURES OF THE HOME DID YOU KEEP?

Colin: The home is historically protected, so no changes to the front exterior were allowed under the City of Boulder’s Landmarks requirements. All windows and the brick, stucco and trim were only painted.

Ely: The porch is completely original and was restored to last another century. The original pine floors and the oak front door were carefully sanded and stained to highlight the beauty of the wood. The existing uneven concrete stairs were refaced with sandstone as well, creating an inviting connection to the street.

DESCRIBE THE VISION FOR THE NEW DESIGN.

E: To respectfully update the centenarian home to accommodate modern Colorado lifestyle, while infusing era-appropriate elegance and charm that had been previously stripped away. Floor plans for all three levels were redesigned to maximize flow and functionality, and access to views and daylight.

Paul: We wanted to bring natural light into the kitchen and family/dining areas with windows on the entire east exposure of the main floor. We have large family gatherings and designed these rooms to flow into the outside spaces of the deck.

WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE DURING THE RENOVATION?

C: As we worked on the project, we realized much of the existing structure wasn’t in good shape. We removed and lowered the basement concrete slab to increase the ceiling height. Many interior walls were also removed and replaced with steel beams and columns.

E: Reconciling the well-preserved exterior with the interior that had been repeatedly and severely altered. While that gave us freedom to modernize the floor plans, we re-established harmony by implementing a design language that paid homage to the craftsman era.

“We specialize in sustainable custom residential projects and are experts in high-performance homes that incorporate a tight building envelope, renewable energy systems, green building materials and high-quality finishes.”

PROJECT CREDITS

HOW DID YOU UPDATE LANDSCAPING AND OUTDOOR AREAS?

C: In the backyard, we replaced a wooden deck that was falling apart with a large steel deck. We had to work around an existing maple tree, which still stands today and provides excellent shade.

E: We maximized the usable area of the backyard by excavating and softening the slope. New turf replaced overgrowth and rubble stacks that broke up the backyard’s continuity..

HOW IS THE PROPERTY SUSTAINABLE NOW?

C: The original home didn’t have insulation in exterior walls (they were solid brick), so we installed rigid insulation over the existing brick and plaster on the main floor and closed cell spray foam on the underside of the roof and the basement exterior walls. Also, all back windows were replaced with energy-efficient windows, and energy-efficient HVAC equipment was installed.

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS HOME AND ITS LOCATION?

P: It has very strong, early 1900s character and is in one of Boulder’s oldest neighborhoods. It’s walkable and bikeable with close access to mountain trails and entertainment, and we love the proximity to the CU campus, historic Chautauqua complex and the Flatirons.

Introducing Wanderland Outdoors

Sharing interests with your partner is important—and for Bobbie and Angel Massie, one of those shared loves is for the outdoors. Back when Bobbie was playing for the NFL, they’d use his limited time away to travel, and those trips had to include fishing. It was a big part of the beginning of their love story, doing guided fly fishing experiences on the Big Thompson River in Rocky Mountain National Park, connecting with the land and feeling relaxed and meditative.

CONTINUED >

Over the years, the pair went on a number of guided outdoor experiences and eventually realized that Bobbie would not, in fact, be retiring once he stopped playing. Instead, his leaving the Broncos meant a new adventure for both of them: co-founding Wanderland Outdoors.

In reflecting on the very beginning of their company, Angel and Bobbie talked about one guide in particular who’s been a fly fishing mentor for Bobbie named Doc. Over multiple trips, he became a family friend as much as a trusted guide, and Doc eventually asked if the couple would like to take over his business. They weren’t in a position to do so at the time, but this planted a seed for the Massies that eventually became a repeated question: “Why not us?”

The Massies were already well known for their hospitality, throwing over-the-top parties for friends and family that always included fun surprises and thoughtful details. They’ve already brought this spirit to their company, starting with their Juneteenth launch event.

The pair invited guests to choose between two guided experiences. The first was a hike around Eleven Mile State Park that delved into the history of the Nuuchu people and invited the participants to meditate and reconnect with the land and their own heartbeats. The other group spent the morning fly fishing along the South Platte River, learning to cast and practice patience. Afterward, all the guests met underneath a big, white tent right by the water and had a violinist serenade them while they enjoyed Chef Bobbie’s famous fried catfish.

There are certain things that are guaranteed to bring people together, and good food and good music are high on the list. But the Massies want

to make their outdoor experiences even more meaningful for guests.

They start by tailoring the guided experiences for each individual. Every booking begins with a call to find out what’s going on in their life and whether they’re using the time to celebrate, decompress, or somewhere in between. Then, they use that information to create an adventure that’s catered to their experience level and will invite them back to the land, back to their breath, and away from all the noise of adulthood and responsibilities.

But that doesn’t mean the operation isn’t responsible. The Massies see themselves and everyone in their organization as stewards of the land, and all of their guides are Leave No Trace certified.

When describing their management process, Bobbie has the perfect inspiration from his years of playing football: “If your players are happy, the game goes well.”

If you’ll excuse the continued metaphor, Bobbie and Angel are the GMs of their company, setting up their guides to create magic with their guests. That means hiring the right people, treating them respectfully, making sure they’re paid equitably, and, of course, securing the right permits so they can go and explore beautiful places.

Their guides are their all-star recruits, especially their founding guides, Austin Campbell and Erica Nelson. The demographic makeup of their entire company is intentionally inclusive and, in many ways, different from that of the traditional guide service.

They bring together people from all walks of life. By doing so, the Massies aim to introduce people who would not otherwise run into each other and unite them over a shared love for the outdoors.

LET’S GO TO THE THEATRE!

A Look Into Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company's 19th Season

The Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company is entering its 19th season. Showcasing five different productions with a special engagement by George Brant, each performance will touch on timeless themes while engaging audience members in theatrical delights. Different facets of a small community shine a light on the greater picture and purpose of the collective as a whole. BETC, or “Besty,” is no different for Boulder. “Boulder doesn't have as many theatre companies as Denver does, and

so our city's gaggle of theatre companies really matters in the city's cultural landscape,” remarks BETC’s Producing Artistic Director, Jessica Robblee. She continues by adding how “Boulder (and Colorado in general) is an inquisitive and adventurous community—always game, always up for new experiences, intellectual challenge, connection and delight. These passions align exactly with why theatre-makers do what they do. An excitement for exploration is absolutely required as one crafts a production, and I think audience members can feel this in the layers of craft that make up a show.”

Given America’s current cultural and political landscape, arguably we need art now more than ever. When you are sitting in a crowded, dark theatre, staring up at a lit stage full of props and extravagantly dressed people, you are not really thinking about who is in there with you. You are not questioning their politics or habits. You are not considering what they have done or will do. There is no prejudice in a theatre.

Everyone is there for the same reason: to be entertained. Robblee stresses that “the arts have a way of swinging for the fences— they break rules, they make up new rules, they play and experiment. We’ve known this for a long time, and it’s still true. It’s still invaluable. In that spirit of play, people’s minds open, surprises happen, lenses shift. And what a sensation that is—what a gift, right?” A gift, indeed.

At the helm of Season 19 with Robblee is BETC’s Managing Director, Mark Ragan. In addition to producing and selecting the season, the two will co-direct "Enemy of the People." This play tells the story of a scientist who makes a startling discovery only to be questioned by the very community he is trying to help. Once again, humanity and proclivity are at the core of BETC’s artistry. In consecutive order, audiences can expect productions of Bernardo Cubría’s comedy "The Ballot of Paola Aguilar," Louisa May Alcott’s "Little Women," Michael Hollinger’s comedy "Hope and Gravity" and Sean Daniels’ "The

White Chip." Additionally, in preparation for 2025, BETC will focus on organizing a celebration of Civil Rights leaders, featuring dancers from the Boulder Ballet and musicians from the Boulder Philharmonic.

There are a lot of exciting factors to look forward to in the new season of the Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company. Come together, challenge your biases, laugh, cry, immerse yourself in the story and forget about the rest for a while. Robblee notes how “when we experience theatre, we’re simultaneously receptive and contributing. This is the state of mind that the arts meet you in—with humor, and daring, and vulnerability—all the good stuff that has a disarming way of bringing us together.”

FROM OLYMPIC COACHING

TO FINANCIAL MASTERY

JOHN YOUNG’S UNIQUE PATH AND HOW HE GUIDES HIS CLIENTS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

INVEST

John Young’s journey from coaching Olympic swimmers to becoming a respected financial planner at Young Global Wealth Strategies is a lesson in the transformative power of skill transferability. John shares his insights into how his coaching background continues to shape his approach to wealth management, highlighting parallels between guiding athletes to peak performance and helping clients achieve their financial goals.

In college, John’s passion for swimming garnered him a spot on the University of Southern California’s prestigious swim team. They were number two in the country when he came on board. “I was fortunate enough to walk on to the USC swim team, which had numerous Olympic athletes from different countries,” John recalls. His tenure under Coaches Dave Salo and Peter Daland, and his previous experience coaching starting at 12 years old, laid the groundwork for a long-running coaching career, often shaping future Olympians like Amanda Beard and Jason Lezak. John reflects that coaching taught him precision, attention to detail and understanding individual strengths and weaknesses, skills that seamlessly transitioned into his role as a financial strategist.

“ DOINGREGULAR CHECKUPSAND MAKINGSURETHAT THEYSEETHAT THEY’REMAKING

PROGRESSISIMPORTANT

John emphasizes the role of applying long-term goal-setting techniques that can be used with athletes to financial planning, stressing the importance of consistency and periodic evaluations to track progress toward financial objectives. “Long-term investing is a hard game because a lot of people want the satisfaction now,” says John. “Doing regular checkups and making sure that they see that they’re making progress is important, even though it might not be progress they want right away.”

John’s coaching insights shine through in risk management. Drawing on his experience, he advocates for alternative investment strategies to diversify portfolios and enhance client outcomes. John underscores the importance of aligning investment strategies with client risk tolerance and market conditions by understanding market history and client psychology. By contextualizing financial challenges within a broader historical perspective, John helps clients stay focused and calm amidst volatility.

Central to John’s philosophy is personalized client service. “We’re definitely not doing cookie-cutter, onesize-fits-all portfolios,” John asserts. “We’re listening

to our clients and making sure the solutions that we’re presenting not only fit to the goal but fit the question of ‘Who is this investor and what are they going to get out of it?’” This tailored approach ensures that strategies meet financial objectives and resonate with clients on a deeper level, fostering trust and long-term partnerships. Looking forward, John emphasizes the importance of ongoing planning and adaptation. By staying proactive and responsive, he ensures that his clients remain on track toward achieving their financial aspirations.

John Young’s transition from coaching Olympic swimmers to guiding clients through the complexities of financial planning exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary skills. His ability to integrate coaching precision, goal orientation and empathy into wealth management sets him apart in the industry. As he continues refining his approach at Young Global Wealth Strategies, John remains committed to empowering clients to navigate their financial futures confidently and clearly. In essence, his journey underscores that excellence in any field requires dedication, adaptability and a commitment to understanding and serving the unique needs of those he coaches and advises. The Journey of an Artist

Artist Topher Straus Imbues His Unlikely and Harrowing Travel Experiences Into his Pioneering Paintings

“As Topher continues to evolve artistically, his travels remain an integral source of inspiration.”

For many artists, their path involves a clear and deliberate trajectory. However, some individuals, like acclaimed artist Topher Straus, take a more unconventional and unexpected route. Topher’s story is one of serendipity and a relentless pursuit of passion, intertwined with a mosaic of experiences that have shaped both his life and his distinctive artistic style. Before officially stepping into the role of a professional artist, Topher had been quietly producing art for over three decades. For years, he kept these pieces hidden, going so far as to remove the paintings from his walls before welcoming visitors—until his son inspired him to reveal his heart and soul to the world.

Six years ago, Topher made a profound shift from his previous creative roles in acting, film direction and video game production to embrace the world of art. Today, his remarkable paintings adorn galleries across the United States and line the walls of his avid collector’s homes, signifying the culmination of a journey that was both unexpected and exhilarating. Reflecting on this

transformation, Topher shares, "In my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined that I'd not only be an artist, but a successful one at that." He goes on to explain that his success isn't measured merely by how many paintings he sells, but by the profound gratitude he feels for his work and the ability to channel his passion into meaningful contributions to organizations that he believes in. Topher has raised over $100,000 for various charities through his art, aligning his success with a commitment to give back to communities affected by different experiences portrayed in his work and beyond.

Topher’s meticulous process draws from photography, collage and immersive experiences. He envelops himself in various landscapes, from foreign lands to serene aspen groves, capturing the essence of these moments through photography. These images serve as a reference for his digital painting, where his work takes shape with meticulous precision, using a stylus and computer. The process doesn't adhere to a strict timeline;

instead, Topher believes each painting represents a lifetime of experiences. His creative journey extends beyond the completion of a piece, immersing himself virtually in different environments and refining details to achieve a harmonious blend of nature's rhythm in his work. The pinnacle of Topher's technique involves fabricating the finished painting using recycled aluminum and a specialized heat transfer process. This unique method not only embeds colors directly into the metal but also captures the essence of surrounding light, ensuring that each piece interacts with its environment and reflects the viewer's presence.

Topher's artistic journey isn't solely about his innovative technique. As a true voyager seeking adventure, his travels have become an integral part of his artistic process, influencing his creative vision in profound ways. Visiting places like Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Israel, Italy and England, in 2023 alone, Topher finds inspiration in diverse cultures, weaving these experiences into his artwork. Among his adventures, he’s unexpectedly ended up in some incredibly harrowing circumstances. For example, he laid witness to the wrath and destruction of the Maui wildfires on a trip to Hawaii this past August, culminating in his Maui Strong six painting series in which portions of his sales were donated to the Maui Strong Fund.

In addition to his gallery exhibitions, Topher offers limited and special editions, preserving exclusivity and value for collectors. His dedication to maintaining the integrity and exclusivity of his pieces resonates deeply, ensuring that each artwork carries a unique story and evolving value for collectors. Furthermore, Topher extends a personal touch to his patrons by offering private studio tours. These exclusive experiences allow serious collectors to witness his creative process firsthand and forge a personal connection with the artist behind the canvas.

As Topher continues to evolve artistically, his travels remain an integral source of inspiration. His upcoming series inspired by

Southeast Asia promises to bring transformative and diverse narratives to life, reflecting his continual growth as an artist. His enigmatic and adventurous personality reverberates in both his stories of his extensive travels and his vibrant and powerful art.

For Topher Straus, art isn't just about aesthetics; it's an immersive journey that intertwines with life's unpredictable adventures. With an unwavering commitment to storytelling and a passion for diverse cultures, he continues to build a canvas that transcends boundaries and captivates hearts worldwide. Beyond the Bubbles: Sati Soda

Blending Mindfulness with Flavor, Sati Soda is Redefining Refreshment

David McLaughlin has always been inclined towards a healthier more intuitive lifestyle, opting for kombuchas and teas over alcoholic drinks for the past twenty years. Always toying with the idea of creating his own beverage brand, the thought came to fruition in 2018 after David first-hand experienced the positive benefits of CBD.

Disappointed by the bitter flavors and excessive sugars present in existing CBD drinks in the market, a light bulb went off in David’s head. His vision became “to produce a CBD-infused soda that not only harnessed the therapeutic effects of CBD, but that tasted great to consumers and stayed true to organic principles”—attributes he knew were desired in communities like Boulder, being a resident himself for over twenty years.

Together with Paul Devlin and their PhD food scientist friend, Sati Soda was created. The name, “Sati,” inspired by the strain Sativa, also resonates with meanings like “friend” in Nepalese and “mindfulness” in Buddhism, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the Sati brand. They developed three distinct flavors: Chill Ginger Soda, Clarity Lemon-Lime Soda and Energy Berry Soda, each infused with natural supplements like chamomile, theanine, ashwagandha and organic yerba mate to uniquely enhance each flavor’s health benefits.

In October 2019, the team debuted the sodas at a CBD exposition in Denver, where they immediately stood out, with hundreds of eager people lining up for a taste. The expo furthered their belief in the product. Can after can popped open for curious consumers to try, confirming the fact that David and his team were onto something big.

Yet, following the expo, like every small-business owner, they encountered numerous challenges. Of course, navigating complex regulations regarding CBD growth and distribution practices proved stressful. Sati continuously had to adhere to strict guidelines and rigorous inspections to keep up with changing demands. Similarly, issues with securing investors, raising capital and retaining consumers were also priorities—taking time away from the team to branch outwards with their business plan. True to their form, Sati did not quit, and the team motivated one another to keep moving towards their initial vision, not looking back. From this journey forward, Sati additionally released three non-CBD sodas, appealing to another niche in the market and keeping one step ahead of competitors.

With the success of the exposition and new soda launches behind them, McLaughlin and Devlin set out on the next step to find manufacturers and

retailers. Opting for a direct approach, they bypassed traditional distribution channels, offering their sodas to supermarkets with a risky two-month money-back guarantee. Luckily, their strategy paid off, as Sati Sodas flew off the shelves quickly, becoming a consumer favorite.

The best part? Sati Soda is the only CBD soda to be USDA Certified Organic, joining the mere 5% of generic sodas on shelves with this label; a dream McLaughlin had hoped for since the early days. He recalls the process as both “daunting and exciting, pioneering the way for organic CBD drinks to come.”

“‘Sati,’

inspired by the strain Sativa, also resonates with meanings like ‘friend’ in Nepalese and ‘mindfulness’ in Buddhism...”

As of today, Sati Soda is available in 35 states and has established multiple co-packing arrangements, including one in Longmont. The growth of the brand has been an extremely collective effort, with David’s wife, Heather McLaughlin, joining as a co-owner in 2021. From 2018 forward, the local Boulder community has played a crucial role in Sati’s success, providing essential support and guidance. David reflects on his journey with immense gratitude, emphasizing that “if you can make it in Boulder’s community, you can make it anywhere.”

Looking ahead, the way forward for Sati Soda is more than promising, bubbling with potential as the team hopes to expand further, innovate and introduce new flavors. In the mind of Sati, their sodas are more than just a drink; they’re a lifestyle, promising to bring health, flavor and a sip of mindfulness to customers nationwide—and we’ll say cheers to that!

POPULUS, THE U.S.'S FIRST CARBONPOSITIVE HOTEL, IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN DENVER'S CIVIC CENTER PARK

A Sustainable Marvel

ARTICLE BY TONY FIRESTINE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RENDERINGS BY NEPHEW AND STUDIO GANG

Contributing to the revitalization of Civic Center Park at Colfax Ave and 14th St, a groundbreaking addition is set to be added to the Denver skyline in the summer of 2024. From Aparium Hotel Group, Populus isn't just another hotel; it's a pioneering venture, poised to redefine the hospitality industry. With its exceptional commitment to sustainability and nature-inspired design, Populus prides itself on being the first carbon-positive hotel in the United States, setting a new standard for environmentally responsible hospitality.

Developed by Urban Villages and managed by Aparium Hotel Group, Populus epitomizes sustainability in every aspect of its conception and operation. With a focus on offsetting its carbon footprint, Populus has embarked on a remarkable journey of collaboration with nature. Over 70,000 Engelmann Spruce trees have been planted in Gunnison County, Colorado, in partnership with One Tree Planted and the United States Forest Service, to sequester the hotel’s initial carbon emissions and rejuvenate the local ecosystem. More trees will be planted as the interiors are

moving towards completion. Populus has also integrated sustainable practices into its construction, utilizing low-carbon concrete mixes, high-recycled content materials and maximizing structural efficiency to minimize its environmental footprint. The hotel's ongoing operations will also contribute to its carbon-positive status, ensuring that every guest's stay leaves a positive mark on the planet.

“We hope Populus will serve as a model for how the real estate industry can more directly address the urgency of climate change while also meeting the preferences of today’s eco-conscious traveler,” says Jon Buerge, president of Urban Villages.

“Buildings currently account for 45 percent of greenhouse emissions in the United States; we need a new way to build.

We hope the transparency with which we are sharing our ever-evolving efforts to reduce the building’s carbon footprint during construction and operations and to establish creative, local ways to sequester additional carbon off-site, will empower other developers to take a more sustainable and holistic approach.”

Populus' architectural style, crafted by the renowned Studio Gang, draws inspiration from Colorado's majestic signature Aspen trees. The building's distinctive facade, featuring "Aspen-eye" windows and outward-extending "lids," not only pays homage to nature but also enhances energy efficiency in Denver's diverse, and often disparate, climate. Internally, Populus exudes warmth and tranquility, courtesy of Wildman Chalmers Design. The interiors seamlessly blend natural elements with modern luxury, creating a sensory experience reminiscent of wandering through a mountain grove. “By taking cues from nature and partnering with local artisans, we hope to create a strong connection between the design of Populus and the earth and its surroundings. The result will be a hospitality experience that’s warm, welcoming and uniquely Colorado,” says Heather Wildman, principal and design director of Wildman Chalmers Design. Every detail reflects Populus's reverence for the environment.

Beyond its eco-friendly ethos and captivating design, Populus will offer many

amenities designed to elevate the guest experience. From modern guest rooms and flexible event spaces to a signature rooftop bar offering panoramic views of the city and mountains, every aspect of Populus is tailored to provide guests with unforgettable moments amidst nature-inspired comfort. Populus' commitment to sustainability also extends to its operational partnerships. The hotel continues to explore collaborative alliances for renewable energy sourcing, regenerative agriculture initiatives and waste diversion programs to further

reduce its carbon footprint and foster a more sustainable future.

Natural Summer Skin Care with Larissa Day of Lara Botanica

ARTICLE BY WILLOW KING | ILLUSTRATION BY GINA DODGE

Stepping into Lara Botanica off of Spruce Street is like walking into a cool oasis. The palette and the light are soft and the scents are soothing. Larissa Day specializes in botanical skincare, and she shares her tips here for keeping summer skin healthy, naturally.

As is often the case, the factors that lead to health on the outside often start on the inside. Day shares that there are many factors that affect skin but she believes that our diet and lifestyle choices can have the biggest impact overall. Our digestive system and lymphatic system’s ability to effectively filter out waste and toxins, as well as absorb and assimilate nutrients, will significantly impact our skin. If there’s sluggishness in these body systems it can result in a buildup of toxins and pathogens in our body which can then migrate up to our skin and cause havoc, as well as deprive our body’s ability to assimilate nutrients to give our skin cells what it needs to thrive. A healthy diet and lifestyle choices such as reducing our daily exposure to toxins, prioritizing whole plant foods in our diet, getting regular exercise, drinking plenty of water and being mindful of reducing stress will have beneficial effects on our skin health.

Since there are so many skincare options out there and ingredients can feel confusing, we wanted to drill down on what truly natural skin care looks like. The Lara Botanica

definition of natural skin care includes the use of skincare products made from organically grown ingredients, free of toxic and unnaturally derived ingredients. It also means keeping the skin’s protective moisture barrier (acid mantle and stratum corneum layers) intact to aid in hydration, skin health and immunity. Lastly, it employs facial massage modalities as a key component in facial treatments and at-home rituals to increase circulation and help deliver nutrients and oxygen to skin cells.

Another element we deal with, particularly in Boulder, is keeping the skin hydrated. Of course, drinking adequate water and eating an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that naturally have high water content is key. Additionally, it’s best to avoid salty food and alcohol, as these are very dehydrating. Also, avoid skincare treatments and products that strip the skin’s protective moisture barrier, such as chemical peels, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments, as well as foaming facial cleaners. Hydrating and moisturizing skincare products, as well as a mineral SPF, can be helpful.

As is often CASE, the factors that LEAD TO HEALTH on the outside often start ON THE INSIDE.

Sunscreen? Yes!

Larissa suggests using mineral sunscreen on the face daily and eating antioxidant-rich foods that increase the body’s ability to protect itself from sun damage. It also helps to avoid drinking alcohol, as consumption significantly increases the body’s risk of sun damage.

Choose a mineral sunscreen (with zinc oxide and/ or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients), using the teaspoon rule: apply a teaspoon of at least SPF 30 to your face and an additional teaspoon to each area of your body.

Mineral sunscreen, which contains the active ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, are the only SPF active ingredients the FDA has considered safe for use. Chemical sunscreen, on the other hand, has been discovered to penetrate through the skin at much higher levels than previously thought, and there aren’t adequate studies to prove its safety.

SUNSCREENS WE LOVE:

• Forah everyday mineral face sunscreen- sinks in, smells good

• Dune- love both mug screen and the mineral melt for body. Lightweight, sheer, effective

• Supergoop- Play 100 SPF 30 with green algae. Protects during swimming, sweating and sport.
