SmithKlein Gallery has become a destination for local, national and international clients. The relation ships that the team forges with their partner artists are fundamental to this success. One such partnership is with Karen Scharer, a local artist who showcases her oil paintings at the gallery.

“Having a community identity is becoming even more important in a world where places tend to look the same. Local businesses provide character and original ity, and create cultural diversity in ways that corporate shops simplySmithKleincan’t.”

A commitment to enriching the community—as well as the lives of those within it—through artistic expression has remained foundational through the business’s nearly 40 years of Communicationexistence.and experience are dual principles that are also key to the SmithKlein Gallery mission.

Gallery has been a much-loved mainstay on Boulder’s historic Pearl Street Mall since 1984. Nathan’s mother, Deborah Smith-Klein, founded the gallery in an effort to spread her passion for fine art, and she became one of the few female business owners on Pearl Street Mall at the time. Nathan and his wife, Ann, purchased the business ten years ago, and it has evolved to represent modern and contemporary artists from all over the world.

The SmithKlein Gallery expe rience today is characterized by extensive knowledge—thanks to longtime manager Lize Brittin and the gallery team—as well as the expressive curation of the gallery itself. Curating is a particular passion for Nathan, as he pairs paintings with glass that highlights the colors of the works along with sculptures and other pieces—all from different artists—to create scenes and tell stories so that visitors can be inspired. Meanwhile, Ann works to provide realistic digital expe riences to clients through tai lored digital compositions that help them visualize their artwork in their home.

The Art Expressionof

“American cities and towns aspire to be places where people want to live and visit,” Ann says.

“I’ve been working with Nathan and Ann since 2019,” Karen says. “I feel like a valued member of the gallery family.”

Community identity is a concept that’s close to the hearts of Nathan and Ann Klein, second-generation owners of Boulder’s SmithKlein Gallery. And it’s through their cel ebration and proliferation of art that they hope to help the Boulder community retain an identity of cultural diversity and vibrant artistic energy.

Regarding the gallery’s physical location, Ann notes that it is of paramount importance that clients not only love the artwork that they choose, but also have an enriching experience when they walk through the doors. Ann notes it’s a virtue that has become even more vital since the onset of the pandemic, as there was a period when con necting with art in-person and on a personal level was lost.

“A brick-and-mortar gallery run by knowledgeable art advo cates who are also involved members of the community can provide much more than just décor,” Karen says. “The decadeslong presence of SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder is a statement about the importance of a local source for art and creativity in a vibrant community. Their presence and welcoming approach offer an opportunity for members of the community to engage in-person with creativity, and the community’s ongoing support of their gallery is a reflection of the value it brings.”

“I have a strong sense of optimism about people and our abil ity to overcome obstacles and build a better world,” Karen says. “I hope my paintings convey that sense of optimism and grati tude for the incredible world that we live in.”

44

LOCAL’S CHOICE | ARTS + CULTURE

Karen’s parents met during an oil painting class, and she was surrounded by a love for art throughout her early years.

As Nathan and Ann look to continue their family legacy of pro viding art to the community of Boulder and around the world, Karen notes the inimitable importance of a gallery such as theirs.

“Both of my parents had an appreciation for how art can enliven and enrich life,” Karen says.

“My motivations are pretty simple,” Karen says. “I paint because I feel compelled to try to add something positive to the world. I want my work to be uplifting and a source of inspiration andWhileencouragement.”Karennotes that most of her work is non-objective, she says that the influence of the natural world—especially Colorado’s inspiring light, vistas and colors—is undeniable.

This early exposure planted the seeds for Karen’s eventual immer sion in a creative career, and she began pursuing artistic endeavors seriously in 1986. From painting with watercolors, then acrylics, to now primarily focusing on oils, Karen has also transitioned from a style of traditional realism to non-objective abstraction.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | SPORTS + RECREATION “Hiking fanatics can rest their legs for a minute and stargaze after taking a night hike to the peak of their favorite trail. The farther you are from city lights, the better you will be able to see the night sky.” 50

CONTINUED

Whether you are looking to decompress, explore the out doors or simply make your inner child happy, stargazing is an activity that is sure to help you take a step back and relax.

• September 25 New Moon — There will be no moonlight in the night sky, making for perfect stargazing conditions.

October 8-9 Draconid Meteor Shower — Best viewed Saturday evening in dark skies, this shower may produce several meteors per hour.

• September 26 Jupiter at Opposition — Spot Jupiter as a small bright dot all night as it reaches its closest proximity to the Earth.

>

September 10 Harvest Moon — This is the full moon closest to the Autumnal Equinox, when both hemispheres receive the same amount of sunlight.

Conveniently, the Boulder area (and all of Colorado) is home to breathtaking views and miles of open space. All you need is something comfortable to sit on and warm layers, and you can enjoy starry skies just about anywhere.  Here are several astronomical dates to keep in mind during the next few months as you plan a stargazing adventure:

IN YOUR BACKYARD

• November 8 Total Lunar Eclipse — Viewers in Colorado will only be able to see part of the eclipse, but look out for a red-tinted moon as the Earth aligns directly in between the sun and the moon in the early morning.

AROUND BOULDER

51| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDERSEPTEMBER 2022

There’s no easier place to decompress and enjoy the outdoors than in your own backyard. In good weather, grab your favorite people, blankets and snacks to watch the sunset, then cuddle up for a night of magical sightseeing. Special gadgets like tele scopes or binoculars aren’t necessary, but be sure to bring them out if they are accessible to you. Stargazing apps like Night Sky share information about the stargazing conditions at any location, while visualizing and locating constellations and planets. By pointing your device upwards and scanning the sky, viewers can see it come to life. Search “stargazing” in your app store and you are sure to find an app that suits your needs.

Hiking fanatics can rest their legs for a minute and star gaze after taking a night hike to the peak of their favorite trail. The farther you are from city lights, the better you will be able to see the night sky. There are also several spots to drive to around Boulder. The Boulder Star on Flagstaff mountain lights November 11,

The town’s accomplishments have led to vis ible dark skies and incredible Milky Way views. An added bonus, the towns are only a threehour drive from Boulder and offer plenty of hotels and cottages to stay in.  Experience the starry skies on Main Street in Westcliffe, or head to the Smokey Jack Observatory (SJO) to look through one of Colorado’s most state-of-the-art telescopes. Public Star Parties scheduled throughout the month (both in-person and virtually) allow attendees to look at various constellations, galaxies and planets through this telescope at Westcliffeno-cost.  also offers reservations for Amish Wagon Rides, which pull visitors through the countryside day or night. Boulder-based Melton Design Build is known for its team’s expertise in distinct home remodeling, gorgeous custom home construction and fos tering meaningful partnerships with its clients. The team is also highly adept at navigating the various municipal requirements and per mitting scenarios that often arise in Front Range builds. This collective expertise paid off especially well in one recent Denver project. For this project, the team’s clients were relocating from Chicago and seeking a Front Range home to suit their taste and lifestyle. Having found the ideal lot, the clients began the process to renovate the 1927 brick bungalow. However, due to permitting restrictions, the project evolved into a new custom home build with elements of the original structure incorporated.

“The Melton team has extensive expertise at both complex remod eling and new custom home builds,” says Adrian Wisniewski, project developer with Melton Design Build.

“Because of this experience, we were able to pivot with this project rela tivelyThesmoothly.”clientsand the Melton Design Build team collaborated to envision a home that would reflect the owners’ personal style and strike the right bal ance of respecting the area’s history and modernizing and improving upon it.

“The clients came to us with a spe cific set of goals and wanted to reuse the existing building’s footprint and extend vertically to modestly support their needs,” says Greg Ingalls, AIA, NCARB, and primary architect on the project. “They wanted to make sure that the second level blended with the historic first story in harmony.”

The end result is a home that, as Adrian notes, walks the ideal line between timeless and contemporary. Described by Greg as a unique take

“The clients had a great eye for style and were very good decision-makers,” says Adrian. “We quickly got to know their unique aesthetic preferences, and then we were off to the races.”

A warm color palette permeates throughout the home, which is filled with abundant sunlight spilling in from new oversized and uniquely shaped windows. Dark blues and rich wood add to the home’s comforting, contemporary nature. The kitchen is exem plary of this warmth and welcome and includes a custom bronze vent hood for added character. Distinct tile details are also sprinkled throughout. In the mud room, the porcelain wall tile gives the illusion of custom wood trim details. The primary bathroom is yet another sterling example.

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN on a modern urban home, it has a clean, simple style with pops of color and personality throughout. Upon entry, guests are greeted by an open staircase that’s flooded with natural light as well as an inviting entryway that offers a glimpse into the living space and backyard that follow. Greg notes that the open main floorplan is the highlight of the home, an area that connects the living, dining and kitchen areas and allows for open conversation between the spaces. It’s an area ideal for both entertaining and everyday living with lovely, spacious flow.

“Every piece has its own unique character. These clients were a joy to work with and gave great design direction so that we could build their custom dream home together.”

“We found an amazing handmade tile for our dramatic her ringbone feature wall,” says Emily Stewart, interior designer with Melton Design Build. “Every piece has its own unique character. These clients were a joy to work with and gave great design direc tion so that we could build their custom dream home together.”

61| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDERSEPTEMBER 2022

Intention and purpose are themes throughout the home, including in the materials used both inside and out. The home’s exterior blends with the existing character of the neighborhood with its reclaimed ground-level brick masonry and dark framed window grilles, which Greg notes pay homage to the industrial buildings across Denver. Meanwhile, the wood balustrades and charcoal siding provide a comforting modern touch.

In all, it’s a home that comes together to celebrate simple mod ern style along with the history of the area. As Greg notes, it’s a home that reads like an old soul, but that includes all the ameni ties and comforts of contemporary living. MeltonDesignBuild.com

To continue the physical and metaphorical cleans ing custom, Moon Bath’s Boulder-based co-creators Dakota, an artist and entrepreneur, and Sierra, a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner who grew up in the Rocky Mountains, created a line of sustainable and organic bath teas, salts, aromatherapy and body and facial rituals that are sold online, directly to consumers.

On a spring night five years ago, Dakota Hills and Sierra Brashear both drew baths to honor the Scorpio full moon, filling the tub with botanicals, bath salts and essential oils. They then immersed for a 30-minute soak, getting out to air dry so their skin could fully absorb the lingering effects of the bath tub’s contents before practicing breathing exercises andThemeditation. morningafter the ritualistic dip, the two won dered if a simple bathing practice could help them, and others, connect with themselves and the cosmos. It started with a name: Moon Bath. It refers to the sacred act of bathing in the moonlight, as well as the ancient Ayurvedic ritual of immersing in water, salt and inten tion in alignment with nature’s rhythms.  Ayurveda, a historical and natural medicinal practice still widely used in India today, often uses natural plants and minerals for treatment, plus diet, exercise and lifestyle recommendations. And the rit ual of bathing has a centuries-old history, too: In cul tures and religions around the world, water wasn’t only necessary for washing up, but also represented purity, spiritual well-being and wisdom.

“We loved the idea of turning our bathtub into a warm tea, adding a little milk and honey, and then steeping our bodies,” Dakota says.  The two friends wrote a book together in 2019, “Moon Bath: Bathing Rituals and Recipes for Relaxation and Vitality,” that guides you through 16 bathing rituals using botanicals (which you brew like tea before adding to the bath water, which isn’t hot enough to extract the medicinal properties), salts and essential oils. The baths correspond with a new moon, waxing moon, full moon and waning moon for each season.

Included with the bath recipes, the book contains journal prompts and self-care prac tices. Dakota and Sierra say they often feel the effects of the change in moon cycle and season in their energy level, desire to be social or instinct to go inward. With moon bathing and meditation, they harness these reactions, bal ancing the body with the elements of nature and the moon’s energy.

Sierra mentions the Ayurvedic concept of prakruti, one’s mind-body constitution, as a guiding principle for aligning our self-care with the elements within and around us.

“When we know our prakruti, we can more easily discern what is beneficial for us versus what is harmful, and which rituals and practices will bring us closer to balance,” Sierra says. “The moon’s phases are such a powerful representa tion of these natural forces.”

“Self-care is always crucial, and it’s the lack of this awareness that can result in us finding ourselves in a state of discomfort,” Dakota says. “We hope the moon bathing movement inspires folks to reconnect with nature’s rhythms and, ultimately, more with themselves.”

Moon Bath’s co-creators suggest setting the mood with a soft towel and robe, warm lighting and music before gently stepping into your tub to soak for 30 minutes and relax.

These four phases correlate to each of Earth’s four seasons and the elements that influence them. The new moon resonates with the season of winter, the cold air inviting us to turn inward and reflect. The waxing moon represents expan sion and growth, corresponding with spring and the earth element. The full moon embodies summer, a season of activation influenced by the fire element. And the waning moon rep resents autumn and water as a time of harvest and releasing what no longer serves us as we prepare for the new moon.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | HEALTH + WELLNESS

68

By understanding the lunar cycle and its asso ciated seasons, Dakota says that “you become more attuned to Earth’s rhythms. And when that happens, you strive to live in harmony with the rhythms, creating space for the natural ebb and flow of the energetic tides within us.”

“I love being horseback as much as I can. Because I grew up doing it, a lot of the ranches will just put me to work. So I’m just part of the crew for the day or the week or the weekend, whatever they’re doing,” he explains. “What I’m really just going for is to be in it–to feel it. I think that really, for me, it’s essential to experience that all the time so when I go back to drawing and painting, I feel it. I’ve been there. Then, when someone who knows that world looks at my work and says, ‘You got that right,’ boy, that really feels good. Because I have done an awful lot of it.”

Sometimes that of friends; sometimes his own, like the one he grew up visiting in east ern Colorado. Now, year after year, week after week, he still regularly makes the drive between his home in Denver to the world of cowboys and cattle. But to Duke, it’s not as distant as people think.

See the West through Duke’s eyes at Altamira Fine Art, which represents Duke and has galleries in Jackson, Wyoming and Scottsdale, Arizona. Or see more of his work at DukeBeardsleyStudio.com or follow him on Instagram at @DukeBeardsleyStudio.

“The temptation for me is very real, but I’m not happy there,” he says. “I want to push the art and myself outside the confines of convention. I grew up loving the traditional giants of Western art, like Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. I knew their work inside and out, basi cally by heart…But I grew up in the 1970s in the suburbs of Denver with a cattle ranch outside of town. And the West I grew up in was entirely different than the one they portrayed. So I want to portray our West, our time.”

CONTINUED > 73| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDERSEPTEMBER 2022

“I’m very influenced by the color palette of the pop art movement,” he explains. “And so those bright, saturated primary and second ary colors, they just speak to me. It’s just such a fun juxtaposition against the traditional Western iconography.”

“The separation between rural and urban, ranch and city is more in our heads than any thing,” he says. “Part of what I hope to do in chal lenging and modernizing this iconography for myself is make it relatable to people who don’t spend their time in a saddle or fixing fence. So they can experience it for themselves.”

Growing up sixth generation Coloradan, Duke has had more than his fair share of expe rience. Today when he goes out to work on ranches, he’s gathering inspiration for his art, but only in between putting in the work.

On any given day, particularly during brand ing season in the spring, you might find Colorado artist Duke Beardsley on some of the most stunning ranches in the West.

Duke says that with something as beloved as Western art and iconography, a traditional artistic approach is tempting; it can be lucra tive in terms of recognition, awards and earn ings. But as someone who likes to, as he puts it, “shake the snow globe” in order to see things differently, there’s no reward in that for Duke.

“The separation between rural and urban, ranch and city is more in our heads than anything.”

His camera and sketchbooks go with him. But the art comes to fruition later, at home in his studio in Denver where he sorts through thousands of images and all the quick 10-15 second gestural sketches he made to study the nuances of the form and movement of the horses and their riders. Then it all comes back to life on canvas, where everything starts as a charcoal drawing before Duke layers on acrylic paint followed by layers of oil paint.

For date night, whether it’s a first fling or a longtime, slow-burn romance, you need food and drink that will inspire. Luckily for those in love (or aspiring to be), Boulder recently got two date night-worthy spots, Bellota and Sherry’s Soda Shoppe . Because the only thing better than eating some of the best regional Mexican food and old-school ice cream is eating it with someone you’d give up the last bite for. Bellota opened in north Boulder in late June, and it’s been pack ing its sunny courtyard and bright dining room ever since. From the team behind Boulder’s already beloved Oak at Fourteenth and Corrida, plus the amazingly talented, James Beard semifinalist chef Manny Barella, there’s pretty much no way you can’t have a crush on this restaurant.

Manny, who was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico, has also spent time in fine dining kitchens at Frasca and Denver’s Uchi, but Bellota is the culmination of those elevated skills and personal fla vors. Take that chile relleno, a tempura battered poblano inspired by his time at Uchi to keep it crispy but light. Or the shrimp taco, where Manny uses techniques learned at Frasca to achieve crus tacean perfection in the form of griddled shrimp butter-brushed tortillas stuffed with shrimp, cheese and tomato crema.

It’s possible that nothing can ignite a spark quite like pork that’s been rubbed with achiote, garlic, cumin and oregano, wrapped tightly in banana leaves and cooked overnight. Or maybe it’s the perfect chile relleno you need to find that loving feeling, lightly crisped with tempura batter and oozing with cotija and Chihuahua cheeses. If all else fails, there’s nothing more roman tic than frozen cream and sugar; maybe in the form of a scoop of creamy pistachio ice cream or a boozy vanilla bean shake.

But it’s that cochinita pibil, marinated for up to two days before slow cooking overnight, that really inspires passion. Find the pitch-perfect pork in tacos and tortas, and its braising liquid—because you don’t want to waste a drop of that juice—in the red potato appetizer. The bowl of taters is coated in the pibil jus, then topped with cotija and onions.

The original Sherry’s is in Five Points, but the sequel location is on The Hill, and you’ll find sparks flying between high school sweethearts both new and old while waiting in line for the ice cream floats and sundaes. It’s the perfect place to close out date night—or, if you’re lucky, maybe it continues.

How Sunflower Seeds Ukraine Supports Those Affected by the Russo-Ukraine War From Boulder 86

PLANTING PROTECTION

The Russo-Ukraine War started in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea and began armed conflict in Donbas. After a Russian military build-up on the border of the two countries late last year, they launched an inva sion of Ukraine in February.  Ukrainian couple Andriy Zakutayev and Viktoriya Oliynyk began the all-volunteer nonprofit Sunflower Seeds Ukraine in Boulder when the war first started as a grassroots way to provide medical supplies and protective gear directly to the frontlines.   The husband and wife reached out to friends in Ukraine to ask how they could help save lives. With their home country in terror, this Boulder family also called on their action-oriented local commu nity to help provide humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian people and medical supplies for small groups of their defenders.

of Colorado Boulder, put on Night Out For Ukraine. Sixty participating restaurants, half in Boulder with the rest in surrounding Front Range cities, donated a portion of their pro ceeds on that day to the organization. Though Sunflower Seeds Ukraine is still totaling the final amount, the event raised tens of thou sands of dollars.

“It’s a major amount of money for people in the Ukraine and can provide hundreds of first aid kits and personal protective gear items,” Ben says, estimating that most adults there only make $200 to $400 a month. This isn’t nearly enough to provide supplies to a friend or a family member at the front line, let alone a larger number of people in Ukraine.

On July 7, a team led by volunteer Ben Teitelbaum, professor of ethnomusicology and international affairs at the University 88

“Besides the fact we live here, we think Boulder is highly educated and compassion ate in international relations and foreign politics,” Andriy says on why they started the organization in Boulder. “It’s a very natural place for a grassroots organization because of the global awareness people have here.”

“There was one person from Nederland who managed to take 26 suitcases from Denver on her way to vacation in Poland, along with 3 kids of her own,” Viktoriya says, with the bags then delivered to Ukraine.

“We found a cure for that sadness in Sunflower Seeds Ukraine. We are able to do things in Boulder that help save lives in Ukraine, one first aid kit at a time,” Andriy says, and he encourages others to do the same. “There’s always a need for good hands, kind hearts and smart brains, which are plentiful here in Boulder.”  Learn more about Sunflower Seeds Ukraine at SunflowerSeedsUkraine.org

With methods like this, smaller grassroots organizations find ways to move quicker and more flexibly than big, national ones like Red Cross or UNICEF, staying agile to ever-changing needs during the war.

Following the fundraiser, Boulderites reached out to put on similar benefit events to help Ukraine. On September 17, Sunflower Seeds Ukraine is helping a local artist orga nize Benefit Art Auction for Ukraine, with all proceeds from dozens of pieces of excellent original art going to this cause.  Events like these help Ukraine by fund ing supplies, but also increase awareness in Boulder during a war that continues destroy ing the country. Andriy says he and his wife, as well as other volunteers, channel their heart ache surrounding this war into helping those who defend Ukraine.

GIVING BACK | LIFE + CULTURE

As Sunflower Seeds Ukraine’s team in Boulder grew, so did the amount of aid they could provide in Ukraine. Their team near Rivne, in western Ukraine where Andriy grew up, ensures medical help gets to those in need at the frontlines in the eastern and southern parts of the country. When possible, the organization buys tourniquets, bandages and other first-aid kit components in Ukraine to support the local economy, which has been derailed by the war. When materials can’t be purchased in Ukraine, Sunflower Seeds Ukraine instead buys them in Germany, then their Polish team delivers these items to Rivne. When the organization has to buy specialty medical items in the U.S., they find friends and volun teers willing to take them in extra luggage to Ukraine or Poland.

“Our floor products are 100% sourced, grown and manufac tured in the United States from sustainable forests,” Peter says. “We’re proud that we have a zero-waste product and 100% utili zation. While we have produced over one billion square feet of hardwood flooring, we have more standing timber today than we did in 1889.”

For Peter Connor, fifth-generation company president of WD Flooring, sustainability is much more than a buzzword. It is a core philosophy and practice that remains a legacy of his 150-year-old“Sustainabilitybusiness.isour ethos,” Peter says. “It has been part of our lexicon since 1872.”

FLOORS FROM THE FOREST

WD Flooring was established by Peter’s great-great-grandfather in Laona, Wisconsin, where the family owns and operates its vast timberland and sawmill. When WD Connor, Peter’s great-grandfa ther, inherited the business, he set out to establish it as a sterling example of sustainable forestry and manufacturing. He became the namesake of the modern iteration of the company as a tribute to his trailblazing in sustainable forestry in the early 1900s.

As the company has evolved over the decades, this foundation of sustainability has remained steadfast.

“We’re dedicated to the idea that we can bridge the divide between what consumers want and what nature can provide with out harm,” Peter says. “Our timber is a net positive contributor to the environment. We’re capturing and sinking carbon from the atmosphere and storing that carbon first in the trees, then put ting that carbon into a product that, in most cases, will outlive the useful age of the buildings in which it exists.” This principle of sustainability also translates into how the company satisfies the needs and wants of consumers. WD Flooring and its Legacy of Sustainability BY LISA VAN HORNE

HOME UPDATE | HOME + DESIGN

“We essentially live at the center of a two-circle Venn Diagram,” Peter says. “One circle is what nature provides and the other is creative design. The nexus of these two notions is where we exist. It’s what keeps us relevant and always progressing.”

For Peter, evolution and adaptation will continue to feature sustainability as WD Flooring extends its legacy.

94

This means that the company’s prod ucts—its prefinished hardwood floors in particular—allow for customers to be closely connected to the products’ ori gins. From the forest to the mill to the showroom, this process allows for a lim itless platform for design—respecting the evolving styles that customers are seeking as well as the life of the forest. Today, WD Flooring offers hundreds of hardwood floor products—what Peter notes is probably the most diverse prod uct mix in the industry—to customers for a wide range of projects. From myriad res idential renovations and builds—such as the Greystar project at Union Station—to commercial undertakings, sports floors, flooring for high-profile clients and much more, WD Flooring products are defined by their inimitable quality, craftsmanship, artfulness and longevity.

The company recently marked an expan sion into Colorado with the opening of its showroom in the Denver Design District. This was a highly personal move for Peter, as he has a long-standing connection to the mountains and the Colorado lifestyle.

“We’re in control of every aspect of the manufacturing process,” Peter says. “We’re one of the last vertically integrated companies in the industry.”

Nearly every floor that the WD Flooring team produces through its showroom is a custom creation. One such example is in a recently completed green-build home in Boulder, in which the design and build team was looking to partner with a company that shared its emphasis on sustainability. This project in particular involved creating flooring that could be used over Warmboard radiant flooring panels. In addition to its exquisite floors, the WD Flooring team is also known for the close collaborations that they forge with the designers and architects they work with to bring their beautiful floor ing to life in spaces such as this.

“We love all things Colorado,” Peter says. “People here just get things done, unless of course, it’s a good powder day in the moun tains. For over 20 years Colorado has been a target market for us. We’ve been a big part of bringing a lot of Colorado’s new and changing design choices to the market.”

“We're experiencing a lot of flux in the world right now, so I got thinking about how can we use design to inspire and create change,”

That’s exactly what Boulder’s annual Month of Modern (MoM) event celebrates. In its eighth year, MoM will focus on designing for change.

Stephanie Bingham, a founding partner at Month of Modern and marketing director and partner at HMH Architecture + Interiors, says about this year’s MoM theme. All events will take place in-person and health and safety mea sures will be in place, including low-touch, individually packaged food curated by GB Culinary, extra space for attendees to roam each venue, and limited capacity and ticketing for indoor events. MoM events are open to everyone. “You don't have to be a designer. All of our events are open to the public,” Stephanie says. “Anyone who's curious about design or has ideas to share is welcome, and I hope that this year’s theme makes people curious.”

Various Month of Modern events will take place across Boulder in September, including a panel discussion about the future of work places, a local art and design exhibit and a self-guided tour of homes.

Stephanie suggests RSVPing or purchasing tickets in advance because seats are limited and have sold out every year.

MoM also partners with nearby nonprofit organizations. This year, proceeds will be donated to NoBo Art District, Street Wise Arts and Historic Boulder. Read on to find out more about these wildly popular events.

Taking place at BC Interiors, this panel discussion will explore that ques tion and focus on how to best set up workplaces aligned with today’s protocols and what workers are demanding.

“We’ve all spent the last two-plus years of uncertainty discussing how the office could and should evolve,” says Laura Chapman Boyd, creative director at BC Interiors. “We look forward to continuing that conversation with the thought leaders from Haworth and our panel of design experts.”

For the last two years, companies have been investigating and testing different design methods and reconfiguring their workplaces. But what do employees need in an office now and how does design play a role?

Attendees will leave this event with new ideas and an idea of what’s next for workplaces.

“After reading Cobblestones, Conversations, and Corks, I was filled with immense pride. Giovanni Ruscitti’s book is an eloquent and poetic tribute to his father and his family. It’s a work of art that made me laugh and cry.”

Vic Lombardi, thirty-three-time Emmy-winning sportscaster

Giovanni Ruscitti is a husband, father, son, and brother. He is also the founding and managing partner of Boulder-based law firm Berg Hill Greenleaf Ruscitti LLP. And when asked to tell the Ruscitti story, he became an author.

ON SHELVES NOW

A few weeks before his father Emiliano Ruscitti passed away in 2019, he told his son, “Someone should tell our Faststory.”forward to August 16, 2022, the day Cobblestones, Conversations and Corks: A Son’s Discovery of his Italian Heritage, a memoir about his parents and their struggles during World War II, their extreme post-war poverty, how they met, and their romance, and their decision to immigrate to the US, hits the shelves.

Dan Luzadder, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author and journalis

In 2020, he decided to fulfill his promise to his father and write a memoir about his life, his romance with his mom Maria DiGiallonardo Ruscitti, and the enchanting village of Cansano, told through several trips we all took together to Cansano. The book, titled Cobblestones, Conversations, and Corks, was picked up by Radius Book Group and was released on August 16, 2022.

“I am so honored and proud to be able to tell his story. I hope you enjoy my tribute to my family and Cansano,” said Ruscitti.

“It is a story that preaches the art of living life in full, with joy and compassion.”

A captivating, candid, and insightful account about a man’s Italian heritage. Kirkus Reviews

“I’m in the middle of the NFL playoffs and couldn’t put the book down. I had to finish it. Readers will love Ruscitti’s book!”

“My parents’ story was much like that of many immigrants - they grew up in Cansano, Italy, during World War II in deep misery and poverty. They fell in love and emigrated to the US in the late 50s to live the American dream. And that they did,” said Ruscitti.
