LIFESTYLE LETTER EMILY O’BRIEN, @BOULDERLIFESTYLEEDITOR 14

This summer, we tried hard not to over-commit ourselves, planning only a few things and sporting an overall agreement to just let life happen. (Not an easy task for this recovering over-scheduler.) Then life reminded me that I am never actually in charge anyway (gasp!) when our daughter tested positive for COVID the first week school let out, several days shy of her first sleep-away camp. By the time we reached the afternoon the day before camp was set to begin, she tested negative. We rejoiced and we packed…only to hear later that evening the camp had to regrettably shut down due to a staff outbreak. Sometimes the irony of life is laughable. We made the best of it, and when plans with friends fell through later on or the weather refused to cooperate, we reshuffled, again and again. Oddly enough, the camp closure set a carefree tone for the summer, making it no lon ger about what we did, but rather how we adventurously went about the day. By summer’s end, we’d leaned hard into winging it, and something that had me feeling anxious in June had become second nature by late July.

~ TIBETAN PROVERB

The key to a confident retirement today is twofold: KNOWLEDGE AND ACTION. Knowledge begins with a clear under standing of your financial picture, know ing where you’re starting from and iden tifying your unique retirement goals. It’s also important to grasp the challenges you might face during retirement. Action is taking steps to put you on the path toward your goals and overcoming the challenges that threaten to derail them. Let’s face it: The days of relying on Social Security and pensions to fund retirement are disappearing. As financial profession als, it’s our job to provide a strategy that helps ensure your hard-earned money doesn’t follow suit. Read on for a basic understanding of the financial challenges you may face down the road. Then, act on that knowledge by meeting with us for a retirement income analysis.

“THE SECRET TO LIVING WELL AND LONGER IS: EAT HALF, WALK DOUBLE, LAUGH TRIPLE AND LOVE WITHOUT MEASURE.”

For many people, health care is one of the largest expenses in retirement. When building a retirement income plan, a financial professional will ask questions that may provide clues to your health care needs during retirement. Do you have an existing medical condition that requires extensive treatment or an array of pre scriptions? What is your family history for health and longevity? These factors will all be considered and put into play in your retirement strategy.

39| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDERAUGUST 2022

FOREVER YOUNG Americans are living longer. On average, men who have reached age 65 can expect to live an average of 84 years, while women who have reached age 65 live an average of 86.6 years. Longer lives mean a need for income that will cover the additional years. While many retirees have eliminated some of the costs from their working years, living an active lifestyle often creates new expenses to add to the budget. How long will you live and how much money will you need to live comfortably until you pass away? If you knew the exact answers, planning for lifelong income would be a much more straightforward process. Instead, a solid retirement income plan must address a variety of possible scenarios, with the goal of striking a balance between maximizing annual income and ensuring you won’t run out of money in your golden years. Through a retirement income analysis, a financial professional can help you consider strategies for maintaining finances during retirement. The objective of this analysis is to help determine how much income you’ll need every month in retirement, explore ways to potentially reduce tax liabilities and to help ensure your money doesn’t run out after you stop working. DOCTOR, DOCTOR, GIMME THE NEWS

Today’s retirees are facing unique chal lenges related to longer lives, increasing health care costs, greater need for longterm care and growing demand to care for loved ones. Understanding the options and navigating the obstacles resulting from these challenges can be overwhelm ing for many. An experienced financial professional can help devise a strategy that addresses your questions and “what-ifs” about retirement. They will work with you to find solutions that fit your unique circum stances, moving you along the path to the retirement you envisioned. The journey to retirement is a long one. should start today to help ensure you’ll have enough income tomorrow. Call now to schedule your personalized retire ment income analysis and get answers for questions about your retirement. It’s your retirement—make it a great one! WEALTH (303) 645-4800 KNOW? 2000, an average American's health care cost $4,672. In 2020, U.S. health care spending grew to $12,530 per person.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY BABY Longer lives also bring about an increas ing need for long-term care. On average, about 70 percent of Americans turning 65 will need long-term care at some point. Your financial professional can assist you in structuring a long-term care strat egy that accounts for your unique needs. The planning conducted in a retirement income analysis can provide you with more choices and options you might not have considered, increasing the likelihood your funds will last as long as you do.retirement

The Boulder-based design firm Native Edge Landscapes is in the business of creating stunning and sustainable yards for its clients. They execute large construction remod els for both commercial and residen tial clients with their team of design ers, architects and gardeners whose industry knowledge and experience mean they know Boulder’s unique land like the back of their hands.  We spoke with the head land scaper of Native Edge, Adrian Flynt, who has 10 years of experience leading projects that re-envision and reconstruct people’s yards, from building outdoor living spaces to xeric landscapes. Over the last few years, he has seen a growing interest in creating environmen tally-friendly landscapes where his team implements beautiful low-wa ter yards using drought-resistant plants. They also design and exe cute modern outdoor spaces like patios, pergolas and areas to cook so people can enjoy Colorado’s 300-some days of sunshine a year.  For those who are looking to start a summer yard project, whether that’s a vegetable garden or re-modeling a backyard space, Adrian’s tips and tricks are your guides to achieving a successful landscape project this season.  Budget The single most important thing to consider before starting a design at once. Your budget can be better managed this way and you will be able to see the project come together piece by piece ver sus scattered work that is less than 100% complete.  Foundation & Fundamentals

Phasing in Landscape Plans Focus on one area at a time and then build that area out completely to your vision rather than attempt ing to take on the entire property

Develop a Plan  It’s very important to work with a designer who is excellent at lis tening to your ideas, who is aware of your budget and can help you to develop goals for the specific project. When it’s time to begin the work, make sure that the design expert you are working with comes to see your property to map the site and see exactly what they are working with.

A key to long-lasting and healthy landscaping is the prep work, meaning everything that’s under neath. This includes properly establishing elements like soil prep for planting and having good drainage and irrigation systems, as these are all crucial to having your landscaping last for years to come.

“It’s very important to work with a designer who is excellent at listening to your ideas, who is aware of your budget and can help you to develop goals for the specific project.”

44

landscaping project is to develop a financial budget. Be clear and open about this with your designer so you can stay on track with your proposed budget and manage it with transparency as you progress through the landscape work.  Understand Your Goals  Maybe you are looking to reduce your water usage, add more color to your yard or create more out door seating. Getting clear on what you are looking for with your yard design is the first step, and then really understanding the reasons why comes next. Large landscaping projects should have a clear inten tion behind them so your money and energy are going to realistic visions.

Maintenance  For new projects, remember that it is not uncommon to see 5-10% of your new plants die within the first year of planting them because they are being placed in a completely new environment. Native Edge offers a warranty that includes replacing those plants for you. As this is an active investment to care for your plant life, make sure you are doing supplemental planting, hiring experienced gardeners and understanding that your gardens will continue to evolve.  Keep in mind that hardscaped areas like pergolas, patios and fire pits all require maintenance every two-to-five years.

A member of Feeding America, Community Food Share was founded in 1981 after several Boulder County organizations met to discuss how they could best resolve hunger issues within the area. The organization’s multiple programs—from the senior food program “Elder Share” to its mobile pantries across many locations— engage Boulder and Broomfield in eliminating hunger.

Everyone loves a newly remodeled kitchen and bathroom until they learn not only how much it costs but how long the design, per mitting and construction phases take. On top of that, many regions are dealing with a short age of premium materials and reputable, design-build firms. All this can make custom kitchens and bathrooms feel out of reach.

Speaking of a waitlist, Modern Homestead doesn’t believe in them or backlogging proj ects. “We are very transparent with clients if we are not the best fit for the particular type of project they’re interested in, or if a time line just isn’t realistic,” he added. “But we’re also doing everything in our power to make our services more accessible through the Curated Collection.”

YourModernHomestead.com 54

The idea for Curated Collection, which streamlines the design process through an interactive online process, came about over the last six to 12 months and is a nod to John’s background. John began his career as a trial lawyer but his attention to detail led him to the tech industry, where he worked for com panies like Google and Twitter. For 12 years in the tech world, John focused on making prod ucts more accessible to customers, enhanc ing customers’ experiences and coming up with scalable solutions. Now, he’s steering the ship on Modern Homestead’s latest initiative, Curated Collection. Right now, the traditional process to get a remodel designed, permitted and built takes several months, at minimum. John noted that many other top contractors are delaying smaller projects well into 2023, based on what he’s heard from clients and the community. So where does that leave homeowners? It means they can put off the renovation for months, if not years, or try to do it them selves by piecing the project together with trade laborers. This means frequent starts and stops and endless frustrations. With the Curated Collection, however, the design stage can often be completed in two to three weeks, and construction timelines are also condensed, according to Modern Homestead. “We are trying to combine our collective decades of design expertise with a more timely and transparent approach to design and construction,” John says. “In the current environment, we believe this is a way to bring premium design to smaller projects that can be completed in weeks and not years.”

OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN

Modern Homestead aims to make the pro cess easier. The company has put its custom ers first since day one, and now it’s taking that mission a step further. Modern Homestead’s new Curated Collection allows homeowners to design and build projects faster, as long as they don’t require structural changes. “We found that kitchens and baths were often our most exciting and sought-after projects, and since our clients have a hard time getting a reputable design-build firm to focus on a smaller scope, it’s a perfect fit,” says John Ploumitsakos, president and CEO of Modern Homestead. “We’ve been working on curating products we love that are high qual ity, available on a reasonable time frame and on-trend. From there, we started building out a more scalable design process and visualiza tions of the finished product through mood boards and renderings.”

The Curated Collection process begins with an online questionnaire to better under stand the scope of the project, including goals, budget, style preferences and square footage. Next, Modern Homestead puts together renderings of a design theme and tentative pricing, all based on the homeown ers’ preferences. Once a contract is signed, homeowners use the online portal to make final material selections, which are based on materials and products that are ready and available. When the final design is approved by the client, construction is scheduled and the work begins. “We are servicing an area of the market that needs high-end remodeling but doesn’t want to be put on a waiting list,” John says.

Now with almost two years and several collections under her belt, she’s rapidly expanding into new cat egories, with goods of all sizes and functions, having initially launched her brand with large-scale pieces and lighting. “Thismost

Based in Los Angeles, the Colorado–born furniture, textile and interior designer Lulu LaFortune got her start working for names like Kelly Wearstler and James Perse. But after she found herself furloughed at the start of the pandemic, she knew it was time to debut her own eponymous brand, Lulu LaFortune Limited.

A common thread you’ll find in every collection is the desire to make something that lasts—something that’s heirloom quality. Lulu points to the staggering statis tics when it comes to design industry waste: According to the EPA’s most recent estimates, just under 10 million tons of furnishings end up in the landfill each year.

Currently, all items are made in LA, where Lulu gets to check in personally on production. “This works really well as a small business. When working with small vendors, they don’t require an order minimum or a set amount of production time. Hopefully, I will grow to be able to make quantity and have items in stock, but right now, everything is made to order,” Lulu says. “While items are in production, I will typically stop into the shops and factories once a week to make sure my ideas are trans lating to how I imagined them to be.”

“By researching and interviewing dozens of families, I learned that furniture gets passed down very often— but those pieces that do get passed down have to have a strong purpose or a story, which can only happen if the furniture is well-made and can survive decades of use,”  Lulu explains. “So, while the reasoning behind crafting heirloom-quality pieces is to avoid the world of fast furniture, it is also to create meaningful pieces of fur niture that can have a story and purpose in your home.”

“With this free time on my hands, I learned that a lot of small shops and craftsmen in LA were still looking to work on projects,” Lulu explains. “So with some designs in mind, I spent the summer of 2020 prototyping a collec tion, and I launched my own brand in October of 2020.”

recent collection has been all about expanding Lulu LaFortune Limited into a lifestyle brand, which is the ultimate goal! With this launch you’ll find glassware, napkins, blankets and smaller pieces of furniture like cocktail tables and dining chairs,” Lulu explains. “While I love designing sofas or standout table lamps, I wanted this collection to have products that allow you to integrate the personality of my brand into your home without the huge commitment.”

And though her focus is set squarely on the future—of the brand, the industry, the planet—history is woven into each and every item. Each piece is named after a craftsman or artist from the past. “I work with a dear friend, Claire O'Neill, who is an art history genius, and we love to spend time researching notable creatives from the past,” Lulu says. “My favor ite of the bunch is the names of my recently launched glassware. Each color is named after a woman who worked at the Tiffany Glass Studio. A lot of people might not know this, but while Louis Tiffany was the founder of Tiffany Studios (the creator of the famous Tiffany lamps and lampshades), there was an incredible team of women designing the patterns of the lamps, cutting the glass and creating the iconic pieces that we think of today. So I decided to honor these women by naming each of the tall tumblers I designed after them.”  Snag a Tiffany glass or another future family heirloom at LuluLafortune.com , and find Lulu on Instagram at @ lulu.lafortune.

While only some trails allow for dogs to be off-leash, there are several off-leash dog parks in the region. On the north end of Boulder sits Foothills Off-Leash Dog Park, a large, fully fenced dog park. If your pup needs to release some energy, this is a great location. If your best pal still has energy after running in circles and sniffing their way through the park, there are several nearby trails you can access. An easily accessible dog park equipped with a spigot for water and a parking lot is Valmont Dog Park. Located at Valmont City Park on the northeast side of Boulder, this dog park spans roughly three acres for large dogs and a quarter-acre for small dogs.

If you’re looking for more hikes with a water feature, explore the trails at Gross Reservoir, but keep in mind that pets must remain on a leash and are not allowed in the water.

RESERVOIR ACTIVITIES If being on a reservoir or lake is more your scene, why not take your pup kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding? Although dogs are not allowed at the Boulder Reservoir between May 15 and Labor Day, there are plenty of other places to par ticipate in water sports. Rocky Mountain Paddleboard also offers rentals for both sports and is dog friendly. On hot fall days, visiting Coot Lake is another option. A 1.2-mile trail circles the lake and dogs can swim on the east and south shores.

Our four-legged pals are some of our best friends and closest companions. We take them on walks and hikes and occasionally let them join us for coffee, drinks, or a weekend of camping. But not everywhere we go is deemed dog friendly.  As the warm weather soon turns to fall, we put together a list of fun places in and around Boulder to take our furry friends before winter snow rolls into town. Don’t forget to pack extra water and bags to pick up pet waste.  HIKING   One of the best places to take our dogs is on a hike, and with 89 percent of the 155 miles of trails in Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) open to dogs on a leash, there are plenty of options to pick from. Before hitting the gravel pave ment, make sure to check leash requirements at the trailhead. Some trails also allow dogs to be off-leash if they are under voice and sight control by their owner and have a voice and sight tag. An easy, 2.6-mile, dogfriendly loop along the foothills is the Dakota Ridge Trail. This trail features a creek, wildflow ers, a shaded picnic area, and views overlooking Boulder. Another short hike for you and Fido is Ethel Harrold Trailhead and Walker Ranch Loop. Only 3.5 miles, these trails also showcase a creek and plenty of room to explore. Eldora Canyon Trail is another great option for our four-legged friends. The 6.6-mile hike just south of Boulder is a bit more challenging than Dakota Ridge, but the views and nearly 2,000-foot elevation gain will leave you breathless.

DOG-FRIENDLY PATIOS When it comes to patio-sitting with our furry friends, you can never go wrong with a shaded area that caters to both humans andOnedogs. such place is Romero’s K9 Club & Tap House. It has an on-leash enclosed pavilion, an outdoor beer garden where dogs registered with the company can roam, and a bar with rotating food trucks to enjoy. Located in Old Town Lafayette, Romero’s started because its founders didn’t think K9s should have to stay home while their owners socialize. (And we have to Anotheragree.)place for you and your dog to be social butterflies is Avery Brewing Company, which is sure to have several pups on the lawn. You can both make new friends here as you sip on a cold, freshly poured craft brew. Other dog-friendly eateries in the area include Rayback Collective’s outdoor area, Bohemian Biergarten’s patio and Roadhouse Boulder Depot’s patio.

PET FRIENDLY | LIFE + CULTURE

Further along Highway 119 is Twin Lakes Off-Leash Dog Swim, one of our favorite spots because every good boy and girl deserves to cool off in a lake, fetch nearby sticks and make new friends. When vis iting this park, we recommend bringing an extra towel or two to wipe off those muddy paws.

The sober movement has been cre ating a new sort of buzz. Even with the challenges we’ve all experienced over the past few years, Americans— and especially the under 30 crowd—are drinking less alcohol. Wellness-focused and, ironically, liquor store shelves are now filled with non-alcoholic spirit, beer, and wine lines; Google searches for “Dry January” were at an all-time high this year; and social gathering spots for the non-imbibers are popping up all along the Front Range. “A lot of people don’t want to drink, can’t, or are just looking for alternatives,” says Pat Irvine, owner of Boulder’s The Root Kava Co. “It’s definitely a community here.” Pat first discovered kava, an alcohol alternative growing in pop ularity, while living in Colorado Springs, when he wandered into his local kava bar not really knowing what it was. What kava is is a depres sant made from the root of the kava shrub. It’s traditionally drunk by Pacific Islanders out of a coconut shell, but at The Root, they serve it out of stainless steel “shells.” Kava fans swear by its relaxing, anti-anx iety properties, and Pat says it’s also used as a social lubricant. The fouryear-old bar goes through at least 20 gallons of kava a day, all of which is hand-squeezed by the hardworking bartenders, because yes, The Root is an actual bar. On its own, kava is earthy and bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. The traditional pours of kava are most popular at The Root, but they also specialize in another herbal extract indigenous to Southeast Asia, kratom. Different color strains of kratom produce different effects: Red is said to be a sedative; white a stimulant; and green euphoric. To counter its bitterness, they brew kratom with fruit juices and ciders and add syrups, honey and agave to make it Whilesweeter.Patsays that a good chunk of his regulars are in recovery, the bar also attracts a lot of young col lege students who simply aren’t that interested in drinking alcohol. During the day the vibe is mellow and calm, with people studying and working, but at night things get lively, with live music, DJs, karaoke, open mic and art events keeping the energy high until 2 or 3 a.m. In Denver, Awake serves the kinds of sophisticated mixed drinks you’d typically expect to find at high-end bars. Only there, at the city’s first sober bar, everything is zero-proof. Take the tangy In Like a Lion, a blend of passion fruit, house-made rhubarb jam, lemon, vanilla and a non-alcoholic spritz. Or the punchy Slow Burn Romance, made with turmeric, black cardamom burned honey, carrot juice and a spicy alco hol-free spirit. These time- and labor-intensive drinks are a far cry from the juices and sodas that non-drinkers used to be relegated to, and it’s about time. Because espresso martinis, fiery margaritas, Bloody Marys and negronis should be for everyone, regardless of ABV preference. In addition to the fancy drinks, Awake has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere—maybe even more so than at a traditional bar. Wife and husband team Christy and Billy Wynne opened Awake to be an allday destination for the commu nity, and it functions as both a cof fee shop and zero-proof bar. Their goal, and they’re succeeding at it, was to recreate the community feel you’d find at an alcohol bar, just minus the buzz.   In a culture that over-glorifies alcohol, it’s almost revolutionary to do something so simple as normal izing not drinking. The Root and Awake are doing just that, opening up the bar community experience to everyone. With a buzzing cycling culture, tight-knit cycling commu nity, year-round sunshine, and miles of bikeways for cyclists to explore, Boulder is a great place for bicycling and is constantly rated as one of the best places to bike in the country. Catering to new riders and professionals, Boulder residents and visitors alike, Full Cycle offers unique ways to explore and connect with the surrounding community. The com pany is once again elevating its hospitable, welcoming and encouraging customer experience by adding guided tours and ride clinics to its list of offerings. A fixture of the Boulder community for more than 30 years, Full Cycle merged with Colorado Multisport in 2020 and relocated to 2355 30th St. in 2021. The bike shop also reopened The Tune Up espresso bar and taproom as a full-service bar with indoor and outdoor ped-friendly seating. Full Cycle has become a one-stop shop for all cycling needs, including bike fittings and performance, service and repairs, rentals and now guided cycling tours and experiences. What sets Full Cycle apart, though, is its sense of culture, community and team of experts. “We pride ourselves on being all-inclusive, catering to all types and all levels of cyclists—from novice to pro, from urban commuter to triathlete, and everything in between,” says Davide Giardini, marketing director at Full Cycle, Colorado Multisport and The Tune Up, and Leah Van der Linden, tours and experience manager at Full Cycle and Colorado Multisport. “[We are also] creative, progressive and competitive in our approach as one of the few remaining brick-and-mortar, inde pendently owned, local small businesses. But what really sets us apart is our hyper-focus on the customer experience in this super competitive and ever-evolving town.”

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | SPORTS + RECREATION88

The bike tours and experiences division officially launched last summer when Davide’s niche bike tour side gig joined the Full Cycle family and was fully integrated into Full Cycle’s business model. “After the merger and move, we needed to do something in response to shifting consumer demands due to COVID and heavier competition from online retailers. With encouragement from the rest of the team, Leah was brought on to take the business I started to the next level,” Davide says.

Today, Full Cycle offers a plethora of experiences ranging from private or guided bike tours with a cycling pro fessional to self-guided adventures for road, mountain, gravel and city e-bike tours. These tours are provided by Leah or another professional guide. Within the same division, Full Cycle hosts cycling clinics, mechanic classes and free weekly community group rides. This new division, along with The Tune Up bar, further drives the company’s mission of “inspiring and empowering more people to ride bikes.”

The Mountain Bike Adventure option, also three hours long, takes place on nearby mountain bike trails with bike transportation to and from the trailhead included. “Boulder is truly an amazing place to cycle. Dubbed the ‘endurance capital of the world,’ we have a community and culture of active people and endless adventure. From our own experience of riding bikes around the world, we know that nothing beats local knowledge and riding with a local,” Davide says. “Cyclists flock to Boulder wanting to discover what the hype about riding in Boulder is all about. We want to show them an amazing local experience on two wheels.”

The most popular tours at Full Cycle this year have been its Gravel Adventure and Mountain Bike Adventure, accord ing to Leah. Cyclists get a chance to explore world-class gravel, dirt and fire roads in the sur rounding area with the three-hour Gravel Adventure.

Full Cycle is able to provide great customer experience because its staff is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and welcoming. The staff has worked together to develop a curated prod uct selection and fun environment for people to gather. “We’re not so much in the business of pushing products, but rather feelings, experiences and true human connections that are so hard to come by these days,” Leah says.

With world-class riding on all types of terrain and surfaces in and around Boulder easily accessible from the shop, guests get to explore the best off-road cycling in the area like a true local.

89| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BOULDERAUGUST 2022

Most tours and experiences end at Full Cycle’s in-house espresso and beer bar, The Tune Up. People from all walks of life gather here to enjoy coffee, beer, cocktails, conversation and quickserve food, making the shop a great local water ing hole to further con nect with and learn about Boulder’s cycling community.

All guided tours and experiences include helmets, locks, nutrition, hydration and lots of encourage ment. Bikes are available to rent at a discounted price when pack aged with a tour. “While safety is our first priority, we really focus on the fun aspects of cycling,” Leah says. “Even when things don’t always go as planned, people always return with big smiles on their faces.”

LOCALLY SOURCED | WELLNESS Photo: Mike Thurk 96

Honeybees use propolis to fill gaps in the hive and dampen vibration. They also use it to keep germs out of the colony. They even coat the front entrance of the hive with propolis so that as they come in from outside, they walk through the propolis and it "cleans" their feet much like a doormat would but with antimi crobial properties. You can find Björn’s Honey at our farmers’ markets and in retail stores in Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs. There are also two small kiosks at the Denver International Airport.

Honeybees do so much for us and we're very excited to be able to leverage the wonders of the hives not only for delicious honey but for healthy skin and immune systems, too.  What is propolis honey and how is it beneficial for your health?

Björn’s Colorado Honey is a small-batch, local honey pro ducer based in Boulder, offering American and CBD honey, CBD skincare, plus European-made, bee-based skincare featuring beeswax, honey and propolis. Its beekeeper, Pontus, grew up in Sweden and learned the practice from his grandfather Björn, the company's namesake. Pontus takes great pride in continuing his family’s tradition of beekeeping and has worked hard over the last nine years to build up hive yards on pri vate land and organic farms in Boulder County and Northern Colorado, which allow the com pany to source honey from the Front Range. This means it’s truly local honey Their littlest beekeeper, Ester, helps her dad in the beehives reg ularly, performing hive inspec tions and helping split hives in the springtime. Pontus’ wife, and Björn’s Marketing Director, Lara Boudreaux says Ester’s had her own bee suit since she was old enough to walk and loves being able to taste the fresh honey comb straight from the hive. We sat down with Lara to learn more about beekeeping. How long have you been in the honey business? Pontus, our beekeeper, started Björn's Colorado Honey in the spring of 2013, but he grew up as a third-generation bee keeper in Sweden. His parents and grandfather are still bee keeping in Sweden today. Does Colorado honey taste dif ferent from other honey? Honey’s taste and color change depending on what types of flowers the honeybees have pollinated. In Colorado, we pri marily have alfalfa, clover, and wildflower honey. Those are the plants that grow naturally or are cultivated in large numbers on the Colorado Front Range, so that is the type of honey varieties that can be found here. All honey tastes different, but in general, the Colorado honey types have classic honey flavor and are not thought to be dark or bitter nor are they thought to be light and super floral. We tend to have what is thought of as classic tasting honey at Björn's and it's delicious!  Your honey is produced in a Swedish fashion without any additives, fillers or preservatives. Does that change its con sistency at all? The focus of Björn's Colorado Honey is to provide top-quality local Colorado honey produced in our Swedish family tradition. It can be said that Swedes typically enjoy their honey crystallized, as this version is smooth, spread able and possesses a texture that is not too thick. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy honey, a fantastic natural sweetener. We also offer a traditional version for customers who prefer the fluid variety. You sell different types of honey but offer so much more than that—wildflower seeds, beeswax candles and even a skincare line. Would you say you use honey in as many forms and derivatives as possible? Honey (and all the amazing substances that bees make) holds so much potential and has many wonderful uses for our society. We love featuring honey, beeswax, royal jelly and propolis in our health and skincare line. We also sell bulk beeswax to other skincare companies and even local bakers in Colorado.

Propolis, an age-old remedy made by the bees from tree and plant resins, is known to bolster the immune system and con tains antifungal and antibacte rial properties. Björn's Colorado Honey is the only producer in the USA that sells a propolis honey, meant for people who eat honey to stay healthy. Our Propolis Honey was created by Pontus’ father Torbjörn in Sweden, and it quickly became a hit. When Pontus moved to Colorado, he couldn’t resist whipping up his own batch. By blending Colorado honey with high-qual ity propolis extract, we boost honey's health benefits.

LOCALLY SOURCED | WELLNESS Pontus finds it fulfilling to be a part of the food cycle and natural world here in Colorado. Supporting local beekeeping helps support area farmers, open space and ecosystems. Did you know you can easily support honeybees and native pollinators in your garden? One simple way is to eliminate the use of herbicides or pesticides in your yard. Lara says these chemicals can be very hard on pollinator populations and can even cause beehives to collapse. The company also encourages people to let the dandelions grow in the spring because they provide a crucial source of nectar and pollen at the beginning of the summer season when honeybees need it most. She also suggests putting out a source of water for honeybees, since local water sources can sometimes be difficult to find. She recommends filling a small birdbath or ceramic saucer, like the ones that go under flower pots, with water and a few rocks so the bees can land on the rocks and drink safely. “It's a simple way to support honeybees and makes for a great place to observe them at work,” says Lara.
