Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16, but there are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, baseball games, camping trips, fishing excursions and so much more. BOISE KIND AIMS TO MAKE A KIND AND WELCOMING CITY Boise

launched the Boise Kind initiative at the Treefort Music Fest in March. The community-wide collaboration is aimed “to protect and promote the core values that make Boise a kind and welcoming city.” Part of the initiative includes the Kindness Count, which encourages Boiseans to share stories about acts of kindness they see or offer at
BoiseKind.CityOfBoise.org.
According to the city, community interest in the initiative has been high, and a wide variety of community leaders have pledged their support. Since the initiative’s announcement in December, a steering committee of community members has been helping to refine the initiative’s scope. More Boise Kind events are planned and will be on the Boise Kind website. In the meantime, you can participate on social media channels using #BoiseKind or take the Boise Kind pledge, which encourages gener-

In order to encourage new anglers, Idaho Fish and Game's “Take Me Fishing” trailers are traveling the state. The trailers contain a wide variety of gear, including fishing rods, tackle and bait. Staffed by expert anglers, the trailers are offering events through July. Most events will be preceded by a visit from a trout-stocking truck. BOGUS BASIN After years of turning out the lights in the spring and hanging a “closed until winter” sign on the lodge door, Bogus came roaring back several years ago with a topflight summer program and a long list of activities. Its flagship “mountain coaster” is like a four-season bobsled run for those who don’t want to defy death, and there’s much more to do. You can mountain bike or hike on the trails, play a round of disc golf or do various other activities including summer tubing, climbing wall, trampoline and more. They also serve food and drinks on the patio. Bogus has done a really nice job of making things affordable and family-friendly for summer visitors. 18

BRUNDAGE MOUNTAIN When people think of summers in McCall, three things often come to mind: Payette Lake, Ponderosa State Park and Brundage Mountain. All three are summer destinations, and even without Brundage’s famous powder, it’s still a blast and worth a trip. Take a scenic chairlift ride and see the amazing 360-degree views that show you McCall’s mountainous backcountry, Payette Lake, Long Valley, New Meadows and Seven Devils mountains. Brundage has been operating its lifts for hikers and mountain bikers for more than 20 years and has a growing network of trails, as well as a rental fleet of bikes and a summer pro shop. Brundage recently added more than 6 miles of XC bike trails, including a stunning scenic ride in the Lakeview Bowl area, so those who prefer to pedal uphill can do so while taking in one of the best views around. You can also enjoy the disc golf course; a free Friday concert series in the grassy amphitheater; and dining at Smoky’s Bar and Grill, which features a full bar if you want to relax on the patio with a beer, wine or cocktail. I’m fortunate to represent a significant number of national and local blue-chip clients with federal and state elected and appointed officials. The result of my work has been and continues to be the development of major legislation, rules and policies. HOW DID A MENTOR INFLUENCE YOUR LIFE? I have had several great mentors, including my father. All have instilled in me the values of hard work, integrity and respect.

While I got into this work to protect special places, and I’ve had many successes, the reason I’ve stayed in this work are all the special people I have met and worked with. These range from leaders like Cecil Andrus, Bethine Church and Mike Simpson to the remarkable next generation of conservationists I get to see each day. Through this work, I’ve met presidents and become friends with people I once thought of as opponents. Love of Idaho— and doing something to protect it—brings remarkable people together. A great writer of the West, Wallace Stegner, wrote that we will not have succeeded “until we create a society to match the scenery.” My favorite thing about my job is the people. WHAT IS THE BEST DECISION YOU EVER MADE? Playing off the poet Robert Frost, I chose the path less traveled, and it has made all the difference. I chose a path based on my love of Idaho’s outdoors and the then-uncertain sense that I could meaningfully contribute to helping protect it. I didn’t seek a career, per se, but after decades, it’s clear a career in public service found me. Taking this path made all the difference. I’ve had a great career with an impact that is lasting and good and built a team bringing this work to new generations. Once I chose this path, prompted by the challenges of Idaho politics, I consciously decided I was in this work to make a difference rather than make a point. I work in politics, and too few in politics really understand there is a difference between the two.
LIFE LESSON: “One person can make a difference. This lesson, learned over and over, empowered
me as a volunteer to step forward and try to help protect wild places. Later, helping empower thousands of others to make a difference led me to running Idaho’s largest conservation organization, which I’ve now done for 24 years. This lesson has helped protect the Boise Foothills and wilderness in Idaho’s Owyhee Canyonlands and Boulder-White Clouds. It’s helped protect our clean air and water. It’s taken me from catching an extended hand to cross a mountain stream to shaking hands with the president of the United States in the Oval Office of the White House.”

EVEN BEFORE I WAS OLD ENOUGH TO DRIVE, I’VE ALWAYS LOVED PONY CARS: PONTIAC FIREBIRDS, FORD MUSTANGS AND PLYMOUTH BARRACUDAS, TO NAME A FEW. In 2009, Dodge released its third-generation Challenger based on the 1970 design, and I found my new dream car. In 2015, the Challenger experienced a new facelift which incorporated a circa 1971-style grill/split tail lights, and I couldn’t wait any longer. I purchased my new 2015 Dodge Challenger in “B5” blue, and I’ve never looked back. Some hidden gems the Challenger offers are the open hood intakes and true dual exhaust system. The Super Track Pak lowers the suspension by 0.5 inches and adds Bilstein shock absorbers, high-performance brakes and specially tuned suspension. Every day I have the deep enjoyment of driving my dream car, and that has made all the difference in my life. But mostly, it’s just fun to drive!

reach,” Brittney says. “He connected us with Travis Hughes, the veteran services coordinator at BSU Veteran Services, to establish an emergency education fund for BSU veterans. Upon meeting, we immediately knew we wanted this event to help impact veterans at BSU.” March’s outing was the first tournament of what organizers are planning to make an annual event. Plans are already being made for the next tournament in April 2020. “Being an organization that operates nationwide, sending vets all over the place, it was so heartwarming to be welcomed by so many companies and people here in Idaho,” Brittney says. “The response we received was incredible. We cannot wait to continue to show how many lives are being impacted just by this event.” Wishes for Warriors assists veterans across the U.S., but Brittney says the partnership with BSU Veteran Services on the new education fund will directly help local veterans. “Sometimes, life throws lemons, and some of these veterans in school feel the need to quit school because of those lemons,” she says. “Things that interfere with the veteran’s success; that sometimes the [United States Department of Veterans Affairs] doesn't cover. We are here to fix that.”

WHAT SET YOU ON YOUR CAREER PATH? I worked as a commercial fisherman and served in the military before deciding to attend college. I knew if I was going to spend the time, money and energy required to get a degree, I wanted a rewarding career. Journalism was a good choice because it's challenging, interesting and lets me make a living doing things I enjoy.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? A good balance in life. I love to play outdoors, and in order to play, I have to work so I can afford it. Working gives me a sense of accomplishment, so at the end of the week, I can ride my mountain bike, catch a fish or hike up a mountain as a reward for working. The two feed off each other, so I appreciate work for the opportunities it provides. I still deal with the hassles of everyday life, whether it’s commuting, pulling weeds or getting an oil change, but all those things are manageable if I can escape outside and recharge.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SUCCESS HABITS? I never stop being curious, I never stop trying to learn (emphasis on trying) and I never assume I have everything figured out because then I might stop doing the first two. Oh, and I never say never. (Just kidding!)
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG ASPIRING WRITERS? Don’t fall for the myth of “follow your dreams.” Set realistic goals, have a plan and pursue it. I treat writing like a job skill as much as an art. Before I went to journalism school, I knew how to write—we all do—but I wanted to make a living at it, so I had to get better and learn to become a professional.
