NIGHTLASE ®

Sleep

No Matter the Distance

As we age the flaccidity(looseness) of tissues increases. This is especially important for the entire airway. Upper airways become more restricted due to hard structures and soft tissue hypertrophy (Enlargement). The result is less airflow or volume. This resistance can be detrimental to sleep quality and athletic performance.

NightLase ® utilizes a twin laser system patented by Fotona Lasers. This procedure is a nonablative(no surgical cutting) technique utilizing laser impulses to tighten connective tissue, muscles, and their attachments to hold open the soft palate area and the upper nasal passages. The net result is increased airflow and volume during normal function, sleeping, and athletic performance.

This twin laser system is FDA approved for safety and effectiveness on the tissues treated. The standard procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and needs to be repeated 21 days apart for 3-4 sessions. No anesthetic is needed, and there is no downtime. Protocol maintenance is usually a one-session touch-up every 1-2 years or as needed.

Together, Stronger

Dear Readers,

As 2025 began, I envisioned a year focused on creating space—for more rest, self-care, and family. In some ways, I got it right. But what I didn’t realize was just how much space I would truly need or the reason why.

In mid-January, our world shifted when we learned that our four-year-old had been diagnosed with leukemia (ALL-B). Before that moment, I had lit tle understanding of what this meant. Now, I find myself navigating a world I never expected to know so intimately—learning medical terms, adapting to weekly hospital visits, and mastering the routine of accessing a port.

I tend to be a private person, but as we celebrate and honor women in this issue, I felt it was important to share this part of my journey with you. Resilience, strength, and community—these qualities shine through the stories of the incredible women featured in these pages, just as they have illuminated my own path these past few months.

Resilience takes many forms: the entrepreneur breaking barriers, the mother fighting for her child’s future, the survivor turning pain into purpose. And often, resilience is found not just within ourselves but in the hands that reach out to help—friends who show up without being asked, neighbors who lend a hand, and communities that rally around those in need.

Right now, I find myself on an unexpected battlefield—one I never would have chosen. I thought I was in a season of replenishment, but life had other plans. And yet, even in the most challenging moments, I see the strength of my child, the unwavering support of family and friends, and the kindness of a community that has wrapped its arms around us.

To those who have faced an unexpected diagnosis, illness, or hardship—you are not alone. This town, this community, this family we’ve all built together is here for you, just as it has been for me. My heart is with you. And while every journey is different, I remain hopeful for the future and grateful for the road ahead.

Ladies, I celebrate you—not just in the triumphs but in the struggles, the quiet perseverance, and the moments in between. Together, we are stronger.

With gratitude,

May 2025

BUILDING NEW FUTURES

Magdalena House Empowers Women and Children to Create Stronger, More Resilient Lives

“I didn’t even know how to properly parent when I arrived,” “Heather” says. That was before her three years at Magdalena House, a transitional shelter for women and children who have survived domestic violence or trafficking.

“Magdalena House didn’t just give me shelter; they gave me the skills I needed to take care of myself and my family.” —Lucy

After receiving counseling and parenting coaching, she has made significant strides in her emotional well-being and parenting skills. Her son, who once struggled with aggression, is now thriving thanks to the combination of therapy and coaching. “Now, I understand my son better, and I can be the loving, nurturing mother he needs.”

Family is one of the most important influences in a child’s life. When healthy, family provides protection, care, and love. Family relationships are so powerful that they shape future connections. Yet, for many families, this foundation has been fractured by violence and instability. Since opening in 2007, Magdalena House has been working to restore and rebuild that foundation, one family at a time.

“The ultimate goal is for them to leave and never need another shelter after they complete

our program,” says Tiffany Fleming, Director of Development at Magdalena House. Through the program’s focus on healing, education, and empowerment, over 170 individuals have regained stability and independence. “We want to equip these women with the tools they need to thrive on their own.”

A core part of this empowerment is education. All mothers at Magdalena House are full-time students pursuing college, trade certification, ESL classes, or working toward their GED. They are not given a deadline to leave; instead, they are welcomed to stay and heal as long as they continue to meet their quarterly covenant goals—set in collaboration with Executive Director Becca McNitzky— and remain committed to their educational journey. This unique structure allows each woman to heal at her own pace while gaining the skills and confidence to become self-sufficient and financially independent.

With the support of donors, Magdalena House families experience a safe home, loving community, and the tools to heal. “Lucy” arrived with no driver’s license and spoke little English. She speaks English fluently now, advocates for her children's well-being, and has obtained her driver’s license, increasing her independence. “Magdalena House didn’t just give me shelter,” Lucy says. “They gave me the skills I needed to take care of myself and my family. I now have the confidence to make decisions and advocate for my children.”

As the mothers heal, they can love more fully and provide the stability their children need. Another mom remarked, “Being at Magdalena House has let me have a better, closer relationship with my kids. Before, I couldn’t focus on them because I was so focused on surviving.”

The shelter’s offerings go beyond typical shelter services. In addition to therapy and counseling, mothers can participate in parenting classes, financial education workshops, and even fun activities like goat yoga. The kids are not left out either; they engage in therapy, peer-support groups, and community activities like the summer reading challenge, birthday celebrations, and Trunk or Treat. Children receive bicycles, a practical and symbolic gift of freedom and carefree fun. “They’re not just surviving here; they’re learning to live,” Fleming says. “Seeing the growth in these women is the most rewarding part of my job.”

Since its founding by Reverend Denise Barker, Magdalena House has grown from housing just four families at a time to supporting as many as 12 at once. In the coming years, they plan to double their capacity again, building three additional homes to serve an additional dozen families. The impact of this extended family of care is life-changing. As one mom shared: “I have no family. Without Magdalena House, my child and I are alone. You are my family.”

“The ultimate goal is for them to leave and never need another shelter again. We want to equip these women with the tools they need to thrive on their own.”
—Tiffany Flemming

This Mother’s Day, Magdalena House invites the community to honor the love, strength, and resilience of mothers by making a donation that brings hope, healing, and a brighter future to mothers and children escaping violence and instability. Donors can make a gift in honor of a mother they love, and Magdalena House will send a beautiful card to the honoree, letting them know that their gift has helped a mother receive the support she needs to care for and provide for her children.

Because it strives to be a place of transformation, Magdalena House has become a home where women and children can heal, grow, and

ultimately thrive, breaking the cycle of trauma for themselves and the generations that follow.

“Mary” recounts the story of her journey from victimhood to being empowered like this: “I didn’t need someone just to pay for my rent; I needed someone to help me really rebuild my life,” she says. “Magdalena House has done so much more for me than I could ever express. They’ve helped me rediscover who I am and become a better mother and person.”

LOOKING & FEELING

Our Best

Dr. Elizabeth McRae Leads the Way In Helping People Live Beautiful Lives
ARTICLE BY DANIEL GERTSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VM

For over 36 years, Dr. Elizabeth McRae has been a pillar of the Boerne medical community. As the town’s first female doctor, she built her career in internal medicine, dedicating herself to providing quality healthcare in a small-town setting. But in 2005, her passion took an unexpected turn—one that allowed her to help patients in a whole new way.

“I was helping people feel better, but I realized that sometimes, people needed to see their well-being reflected in the mirror,” McRae shares. Her journey into medical aesthetics was driven by a desire to bridge the gap between how her patients felt on the inside and how they looked on the outside. “It’s about helping them look as vibrant and youthful as they feel.”

Her interest in aesthetics began when a friend playfully told her she needed a facelift—an idea she quickly dismissed because of how invasive the procedures tend to be. “I wasn’t going to do that!” she says, laughing. Instead, she began exploring and offering non-invasive cosmetic treatments, starting with Botox in the mid-90s, long before it was widely used for cosmetic purposes. By 2005, she had fully embraced medical aesthetics, launching what is now known as McRae MD Medical Laser Center.

“The shift was challenging at first,” she admits. “I was a ‘real doctor,’ and I wondered if this was serious enough work. But then I saw how much it meant to my patients. It wasn’t just about vanity—it was about confidence, self-esteem, and feeling like themselves again.”

McRae and her team specialize in advanced, medically supervised rejuvenation treatments—from laser therapies and injectables to weight loss programs. She believes that what sets her practice apart is her extensive medical background and commitment to patient safety. “There are so many new med spas popping up, but not all of them have experienced medical professionals on-site,” she cautions. “Patients should always do their homework. Your health and safety should come first.”

Beyond aesthetics, McRae has a long history of service. In the late ’90s, she co-founded the Kendall County Medical Society and helped launch the Mission for Health, a free clinic for uninsured patients. “I love medicine,” she says. “Whether it’s internal medicine or aesthetics, my goal has always been to help people feel their best.”

“I love medicine! Whether it’s internal medicine or aesthetics, my goal has always been to help people feel their best.”

Her philosophy is simple: she wants her patients to feel safe, empowered, and informed in their journey toward self-improvement. “I take a very serious, medical approach to this work,” she explains. “We don’t just follow trends—we test and research treatments extensively before offering them to patients. If I offer it, it’s because I truly believe in its effectiveness and safety.” With that in mind, McRae and her practice have been leading the way for years.

She founded the first aesthetic medicine clinic in Boerne, and for 20 years, companies have sent doctors from around the country to learn from her.

While her practice keeps her busy, McRae also finds joy in her personal life. She’s a proud mother of three, a new grandmother, an avid traveler, and a passionate equestrian. “Riding horses keeps me feeling young and fit—it’s part of my own self-care,” she says with a smile.

After nearly four decades in Boerne, McRae remains as committed as ever to her work. “Some people think about retiring, but I feel like we’re just getting started,” she says. “Every day, I get to help someone feel more confident, whether it’s a woman preparing for her daughter’s wedding or a man launching a new business venture. That’s what keeps me going.”

With her blend of medical expertise, compassionate care, and dedication to helping people live confidently, McRae has undoubtedly left her mark on Boerne—and she’s not slowing down anytime soon. When asked how she wants to be remembered, her answer is clear: “I hope people think of me as someone who truly cared—who made them feel safe, valued, and beautiful, inside and out.”

WECANDO H ARDTHINGS

When author Glennon Doyle says, “We can do hard things,” she’s not talking about perimenopause, but she may as well be.

Once women reach a certain age, the changes that come can be frustrating and downright frightening. We sat down with Kaytlyn Kuecker, MPAS, PA-C, a local Physician Assistant and founder of Diamond K Fitness, to talk about how bodies change, what symptoms to expect, and—most importantly—how to feel your best during this transitional time of life.

(Responses edited for length and clarity.)

LET’S START WITH THE BASICS. WHAT IS PERIMENOPAUSE?

Perimenopause is the phase before menopause, typically starting in the 40s, though it can begin earlier. During this time, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate, leading to a variety of symptoms. Menopause is defined as the point when a woman has gone 12 months without a period, but perimenopause can last for several years as the body gradually adjusts to lower hormone levels.

What

Every Woman Needs to Know to Face Perimenopause With Confidence

WHAT SHOULD WE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR?

The symptoms of perimenopause can vary widely, but some of the most common include irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, and trouble sleeping. There may also be physical changes like weight gain, fluctuations in blood sugar, and decreased energy. Plus, some people experience emotional symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, and even difficulty concentrating.

ARE THERE EFFECTIVE WAYS TO MANAGE THESE SYMPTOMS?

Absolutely! While everyone’s experience is unique, some of the best ways are:

Prioritize protein and balance blood sugar. Sufficient protein and fiber-rich foods help regulate hormones and stabilize energy levels. Support gut health. A healthy gut plays a key role in hormone metabolism, digestion, and mood. Include probiotic-rich foods and reduce processed foods.

Manage stress and improve sleep. Elevated cortisol (stress hormone) can worsen symptoms. Incorporate deep breathing, meditation, and a solid nighttime routine.

Strength training. Lifting weights helps maintain muscle mass, supports metabolism, and keeps bones strong, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Consider lifestyle and supplement support. Certain supplements—i.e., magnesium, omega-3s, adaptogens—may help, but make sure you work with a provider who can help develop a strategy customized for you.

HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO’S BEGINNING THIS STAGE OF THEIR LIVES?

Conquer this phase with knowledge and confidence. Perimenopause isn’t something to fear—it’s your body’s natural evolution. By taking control of your nutrition, stress, and movement, you can feel strong, energized, and balanced rather than just “pushing through.”

If something feels off, advocate for yourself. Your symptoms may be “just part of aging,” but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer. There are real, science-backed ways to support your body and feel your best. You deserve to feel strong and vibrant in every season of life!

FAMILY I N FASHION

A POWERFUL MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOND MAKES THIS MULTI-GENERATIONAL BOUTIQUE FLOURISH.

ARTICLE BY TANESHA DILLARD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISON
“I want you to feel good— whether you buy something from me or not.” —Reagan Harris

Walking down the Hill Country Mile, The Pearl Antler is hard to miss. The thriving boutique combines country fashion with sparkle, sass, and everything in between. It may be the bright blue truck that catches your eye and the fashions that draw you in, but it will be Reagan and Robyn who keep you coming back.

Owner Reagan Harris has nurtured this passion project since 2015 with the support of her mother, Robyn McGarr. “Because I'm her mother…I'm a good sounding board for her,” she says. Reagan agrees that her mom is a trusted confidant and partner. “She just supports me,” says Reagan. “We do everything together.”

That unwavering support can sometimes look like a lot of things. When Reagan decided to open a store, Robyn says her response was, “You’re crazy! What if you fail?” Reagan replied with her own question: “What if I fly?” And that was enough for Robyn, who ended with, “I’m with you 100%. So if you say you’re gonna do it, I’m with you all the way.”

From then on, the collaboration was continuous. When renaming the business, Robyn suggested Reagan use her birthstone. Thus, The Pearl Antler was born. Robyn explains, “The pearl adds a little bit of upscale. That’s the glam. And then the antler fits in with the Hill Country.”

“You don’t have to think alike, but you have to think together to be aligned.”
—Robyn McGarr

The logo came out of their mother-daughter dynamic, too. The ladies knew they needed to distinguish themselves at Fredericksburg Trade Days, so Robyn’s beautifully adorned axis deer head with pearls and rhinestones became the brand. “So we pulled that out, put it in the turquoise, and wrote ‘The Pearl Antler’ over it,” Reagan says, and in March of 2016, she opened The Pearl Antler in Boerne. Plus, she was excited to move back. “I just knew when I opened my store, I had to come back here. My brother lived here, my Nana, all my cousins—everybody was here. It's always felt like home.”

Reagan was born and raised here, so the Boerne lifestyle has always shaped her style. “All of high school, I wore starched jeans, boots,” she recalls. “Like I was that girl.” When she went to college, her style naturally evolved. “I realized all of my friends that rodeo didn’t dress like they rodeoed,” she says. “I told myself, ‘You can ride and do just the same things as them. You don’t have to dress that way.’”

Reagan and Robyn share a passion for inspiring customers to broaden their style. Reagan says, “It may not look like your style, but you can wear it with other things and make it yours.” Carrying brands like Umgee and Jaded Gypsy in sizes small to three XL, Reagan says, “I want you to feel good—whether you buy something from me or not—I want you to know that this is a safe space.”

Aligned in their values and vision, they have their differences. Robyn says, “It’s probably both age and personality because this girl has no fear.” Unlike her daughter, Robyn says she doesn’t like taking chances. “I see how she makes things work, so I don't want to be the ball and chain all the time.”

But when necessary, Mom will share her

point of view. For example: “Sometimes I'll have picked something that I think is darling,” Robyn says, “and she'll say, ‘No way, that'll never sell.’” Yet, they do sell, she says, smiling, and often quickly. Of course, she’s quick to admit that the same drama plays out vice versa, too.

Both daughter and mom work full-time jobs outside the store, limiting their time in the shop. “I have just hired really good people to make it work,” Reagan says. Julie Livingston-McCartney, the chief merchandiser and longest-serving employee, credits the duo as the backbone of The Pearl Antler. “Robyn and Reagan complement each other,” she says. Despite their differences, “They have complete respect, understanding, devotion, and compassion for each other.”

They have also supported each other through many family losses, most recently Reagan’s grandmother and Robyn’s mother, Mary Ellen Penwell. Glamorous and always put together, Mary Ellen often visited the store. “She would just sit and talk to people all day long,” Reagan reminisces. “She loved to come hang out with us.”

The Pearl Antler now involves a fourth generation. Reagan’s two daughters, aged six and three, contribute to a small section of resale items. And her husband, Bryant, has chipped in, too, primarily doing carpentry work for the store from the beginning.

Since moving to its current location in 2022, The Pearl Antler has received recognition from The Boerne Star and Boerne Chamber of Commerce. Reagan hopes to add stationery and a tea room, serving meals made by Robyn. Until then, Reagan holds pop-ups for vendors, participates in community events, and welcomes passersby to check out the late-1950s turquoise Chevy Apache in the courtyard.

There's something for everyone, from sale grab bags and a hat bar to accessories and a tiny men’s shirt section (yes, it does exist). Yet, the bond between Robyn and Reagan makes The Pearl Antler special. As a long-time family friend, Livingston-McCartney sums it up this way: “Their charisma just oozes with love, friendliness, and compassion… They love big, and they just make life fun.” The Pearl Antler is an extension of their charisma— grounded in their faith, family, and community—making fashion fun.

Considering starting your own business? Reagan says, “Just do it. Go for it. You’ll never know until you try.” Robyn cautions, though, “It’s not as easy as it looks.” Reagan and Robyn recommend spending time researching and identifying your niche. Reagan shares that it is essential to be strategic with spending. “It was probably year two, year three, before I truly saw that it was making a profit.”

When mixing family with business, Robyn advises, “If you’ve got a good relationship already, it’ll work.” Though lines can blur between work and home, Reagan says you have to be able to have hard conversations. Robyn says, “You don’t have to think alike, but you have to think together to be aligned.”

A Legacy of Dedication

ASHLEE PFEIFFER REFLECTS ON THE CHALLENGES AND TRIUMPHS THAT MADE HER THE GREATER BOERNE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE’S “BUSINESSWOMAN OF THE YEAR”

When you meet her, it’s clear that Ashlee Pfeiffer’s journey is deeply intertwined with the Boerne community. She’s a proud 1993 graduate of Boerne High School, and her husband’s family has been in the area since the 1800s. To her, it’s always been clear that Boerne would be home.

At Home in Boerne

After earning her degree, Pfeiffer took a temporary job at Kendall County Abstract Company (KCAC) before starting her planned career in finance. After a two-year stint in a corporate position in San Antonio, the offer of an office, an assistant, and the opportunity to train for leadership brought her back to KCAC. Understanding the importance of building a career within the community where she and her husband would raise their future children, Pfeiffer accepted.

“I love helping my friends and neighbors through the real estate process.” —Ashlee Pfeiffer

In 2022, Pfeiffer and her husband, Rick, had the opportunity to carry on the legacy of dedication begun by KCAC’s previous owners, Gordon Holland and Mike and Laurie Lang. In fact, the chance to continue a business with such strong community ties was one they embraced enthusiastically. “I love helping my friends and neighbors through the real estate process,” Pfeiffer says of her work in the same office she started in 25 years ago, a symbol of her enduring commitment.

A Business Built on Relationships

At KCAC, customer service is the top priority. “I hope that by helping people buy their dream home, remodel the home they’ve lived in for years, or take a second lien to pay for college, I am in some small way giving back to this town that I love,” Pfeiffer says summarizing her approach. She often tells her clients she’ll see them around town, and she means it. Whether at a local event or a football game, these relationships extend beyond business.

KCAC’s commitment to Boerne has never wavered. Many team members grew up in the area, creating a deep-seated investment in the community. The company continues to operate on the values instilled by previous owners: “God, Family, Work.” This principle guides every decision, ensuring that integrity and community always come first.

Giving Back to Boerne

Pfeiffer is incredibly grateful for the opportunities she has had in our community, including being named “Businesswoman of the Year” by the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce. “It is such an honor!” she says excitedly. “I think Kim and her team are amazing. When you look at what they do daily for this community, it is remarkable.”

Looking ahead, Pfeiffer hopes that KCAC will continue serving Boerne for another century. With a strong foundation, dedicated leadership, and a deep love for the community, she is confident in its future. Motivated by her husband, children, and mother, Pfeiffer remains committed to making a lasting impact in the place she proudly calls home. kcac.net | 830-816-2131 | 103 N. Saunders St.

Go Shopping With Steely For Styles That Look

Fabulous Over and Over

As the old saying goes, “You can’t re-wear an outfit once social media has seen it.” But if that’s true, it means we have to Poshmark every look after we’ve worn it once, right?! Wrong! With some outsidethe-bargain-box thinking and a few minutes, we can freshen up a style and make your fave look last.

To create longevity within your closet, you need to focus on how you style pieces differently each time you wear them. This is where you bring your own personal spin to a piece and show off your inner fashionista. Annnnd this also helps me justify a purchase. If I can style one dress in four different ways, it’s technically a quarter of the cost, right? Isn’t girl math the best?!

So join me as we visit three of my favorite Boerne boutiques, and I’ll show you how to assemble a great outfit—then spin it into another fabulous look!

Wear It Again, Girl!

CLASSIC DENIM DRESS

Ella Blue | shopellablue.com

Whether you’re on TikTok or not, you’ve seen the trending videos where influencers show an outfit completely blank versus fashionably styled—so that’s what I’m doing here!

Imagine a Tate McRae bop looping in the background as we show how even this great maxi denim dress is pretty plain on its own. But it totally transforms into an on-trend, springy look when I add the platform sandals, an oversized boyfriend shirt, and vintage-style sunnies. Full disclosure: I actually loved this look so much that I purchased it myself!

ELLA BLUE DENIM HIGH NECK MIDI DRESS, $90

ELLA BLUE LIMONCELLO BUTTON DOWN, $54

FLORAL SCARF, $18

SUNGLASSES, $18

TOP MODA TRACI-25 SANDALS, $40

MADISON WEST MINI BOWLING SHOULDER BAG, $56

ONE SKIRT, TWO WAYS

The Dienger Trading Co. | thediengertradingco.com

When you have a statement piece in your closet— like a bold pair of heels, a blingy jacket, or a summery, printed skirt like this one—it’s basically begging to be worn again and again. That’s where styling comes in!

With this paisley wrap skirt, I chose to show it in two simple ways: dressed up and dressed down. The more casual style with sandals and minimal jewelry can work for a shopping day with friends. Meanwhile, the dressier look—complete with a pair of wedges and layered jewelry— gives it that elevated “I’m-going-to-dinner-on-vacation” vibe.

TRENDY CORAL DRESS

The Pearl Antler | thepearlantler.com

This dress is a great example—when a piece has a lot of great things going on, you can refresh the look with just a few select pieces.

This coral dress is totally on trend by itself because of the bow details, so I chose to keep the styling simple. The bows provide enough oomph on their own, so you don’t want to get crazy with the accessories—I kept it simple with sandals and highend turquoise earrings. This dress is super easy for church when styled like this, but it can also be perfect with a dressy sandal for a shower or grad party, or with a simple pair of casual sneakers for brunch with friends!

ENTRO DRESS, $58.95

LUTZ TURQUOISE EARRINGS, $310.95

TAMING THE TEXAS SUN

Transforming your outdoor space into a comfortable retreat during the scorching Hill Country summers can be brutal. Adding outdoor shades is a stylish and practical solution, providing much-needed shade, cooling relief, and privacy while enhancing your home’s aesthetic. We turned to Deborah and Greg Moats, the experts at BlindsNMotion, to learn how to choose the perfect outdoor shades to beat the Texas temps in style.

(Responses edited for length and clarity.)

WHY IS ADDING SHADE TO YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES A GOOD IDEA?

Shades will add additional living and entertainment space. This allows you to enjoy outdoor living yearround without the bugs, wind, and rain. WHAT SHOULD A HOMEOWNER KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANNING TO ADD SHADE?

When deciding which type of outdoor shade is best for you, consider how you want to use the space today and in the future.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIEL GERTSON

Master intense rays, soaring temperatures, and unpredictable winds with shades specifically designed for you to enjoy your patios and porches year-round.

ARE THERE POPULAR TRENDS OR INNOVATIONS HOMEOWNERS SHOULD CONSIDER?

The current popular trend in outdoor shades is Keder track systems that are hurricane-rated. This design offers high wind resistance, larger shade widths, and lower maintenance than Zipper tracks.

WHAT PITFALLS SHOULD HOMEOWNERS WATCH OUT FOR?

Common pitfalls when purchasing outdoor shades are making decisions based on price alone. Instead, we recommend considering long-term maintenance and durability. Often, lower-priced products can cost you more in the long run with maintenance and longevity of materials.

WHAT IS THE MOST CRITICAL FACTOR TO CONSIDER WHEN ADDING SHADE TO YOUR HOME?

Outdoor shades are available in a variety of systems. Ask questions and research which application works best for the openings you want to cover, is properly engineered (especially in oversized widths), and suits how often you plan to use your outdoor space.

With over 30 years of experience, BlindsNMotion has grown from a custom drapery workroom to a premier provider of high-quality window treatments, including solar screens, designer shades, and outdoor blinds. DIAMOND CONNECTION

These sluggers hit for community and teamwork on and off the field.

It's Wednesday evening in Boerne, and the warm air surrounding Northrup Field carries the sound of a bat cracking. The cheers of teammates and spectators swell. Tonight, the softball league isn't just about playing a game. It's about a community, a gathering where experienced players and rookies join forces to play hard, have fun, and share their love for softball.

Teresa Widner's passion for the game runs deep. As a consistent thread throughout her life, softball is not just a sport to her. "I've never stopped playing," she says. "The only time I did was when I was pregnant, for obvious reasons." Her experience stretches back to high school and college. While she mainly occupies the catcher's position these days, she's played almost every position on the field for the Servpro team. And while the competitive spirit is there, it's the community she enjoys most. "They're my friends, my family," she says of her teammates. "We've been through a lot together— divorces, new marriages, new kids. They've always been there."

Like Widner, Krystle Hartley has spent much of her life with a glove in hand. She started in T-ball as a child and played high school and college ball before returning to the sport through Boerne's co-ed league. She now plays first and second base for “Famigos,” a team that originated as a family venture and has since grown into a tight-knit group. "It's kind of been fun," Hartley shares. "My husband and I use it as a date night during the school year. In the summer, it becomes a family event, and the kids love it."

Hartley's experience in co-ed softball has been an adjustment from her years in fastpitch. "The speed of the pitch was a big change," she laughs. "And the speed of the ball coming off the guys' bats—it's definitely different playing with them." Still, she finds that the women on the field can hold their own. "We've got some strong, fast women in this league. It's nice to earn that respect from the guys who might not expect it."

Softball was a sport Megan Gagliano left behind after high school—until a friend invited her to join the Boerne league.

“It’s not just about playing. It’s about friendships, memories, and having something to look forward to every week. This league has been a part of my life for nearly 20 years, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
—Teresa Widner

Now a “Low Expectations” member, she plays catcher and second base. "It's been a lot of fun," she says. "I hadn't played in a while, but getting back into it was great. It's a good mix of competition and social time." The league has helped her form new friendships and connect with the community. "You meet so many people— whether they're from Boerne, San Antonio, or Fredericksburg. It brings people together."

The co-ed dynamic in the league is unique and adds challenges and camaraderie. "Co-ed is actually way more competitive,"

Widner explains. "For whatever reason, the girls can make or break the team. The guys will swing for the fences, and sometimes it's the women who are consistently getting on base."

Beyond the games, the league fosters an appreciation for community beyond the playing field. Widner remembers a moment when tragedy struck a fellow player's family. "We lost a teammate last year, and we were able to come together for a memorial," she says. "At the end of the day, we put all the competition aside and just supported each other."

Hartley affirms that sentiment, observing that the friendships forged in the league carry over into daily life. "We'll run into each other around town and catch up," she says. "During the off-season, we still keep in touch, and we even do dinners or hangouts outside of softball."

As the league grows, players look for more opportunities for area tournaments and increased field space. However, Boerne's co-ed league will never leave its core purpose of bringing people who love the game together.

The message is clear for those on the fence about joining: give it a shot. "You don't know if you don't try," Gagliano says. "It's fun, it's social, and it's a great way to meet people."

Widner agrees, adding, "It's not just about playing. It's about friendships, memories, and having something to look forward to every week. This league has been a part of my life for nearly 20 years, and I wouldn't trade it for anything."

For many, the league is more than just an athletic outlet—it's a way to stay connected with old friends and forge new relationships. Hartley points out, "A lot of us grew up playing together, and now we get to bring our families into it. Our kids play together, our spouses come out and watch. It's not just a sport—it's part of our lives." Gagliano adds that the sense of belonging extends to new players, too. "It doesn't matter if you've played your whole life or if you're just starting. If you show up, you're part of the family."

The players hope to see more growth opportunities, perhaps even an expansion of the league. "It would be great to have more teams, more games, maybe even a women's division," says Hartley. "I'd love to see this league continue to thrive."

In Boerne, where community reigns supreme, the co-ed softball league is as much a means to an end as anything else. It's an opportunity to join together for the love of the game, the continuation of the tradition, and a reminder that some of life's most memorable moments happen under the lights of a softball field.

SIP, READ, REPEAT: A Book & Wine Club’s Recs

Find Fun and Friendship With the Boerne Women’s Book Club’s Recommended Reads

The Boerne Women’s Book and Wine Club meets every month somewhere around town. To find them, search for “Boerne Women’s Book and Wine Club” on Facebook. Once “approved” for membership, they’ll post reading lists and meeting details for you to join in!

When Brooke Erin Lowry set out to meet people after moving to Boerne seven years ago, she had a surefire combo that was guaranteed to accomplish her goal: books and wine. Thus, the Boerne Book and Wine Club was born. And since it officially started in 2019, it has blown up. “I started the Boerne Book and Wine Club and made a post about it on a Boerne mom’s Facebook group,” Lowry recalls. “The group has grown like crazy since then.”

Tapping into the magic combo of wine and books has led to meet-ups at all of the hot spots around town, both new and old. “We have gone to Lost Oak, DeVino, Dodging Duck, Bevy, Inferno’s, Tusculum, 28 Songs, Freeroam, Pure Country, Richter,” Lowry rattles off, knowing she’s leaving some out. “We try to rotate between going out to support local places and going to the homes of one of our members.”

These days, the group meets once a month, but Lowry says the connections are much bigger. “I have found my people through this group, and it has given so many people a place to fit in and belong in Boerne,” she explains. “We welcome everyone and hope that anyone who wants a place to meet new people can come and join us.”

So let’s say someone has been looking for new fun friends and wants to catch up on some of the books they’ve been reading… where should they start? Lowry and crew gave us six books they know you’ll love this summer. And when you’re ready to discuss your thoughts on these reads, go find them and share. “We can pretty much guarantee you’ll have fun!”

GATHER UP YOUR GALS FOR AN EPIC MORNING WITH THIS PERFECT BREAKFAST COCKTAIL BAR

Mimosa Magic MIMOSAS

Brunch with your girlfriends is always a good idea. But when you add a mimosa bar to the mix? Pure magic. With just a little creativity and a few simple ingredients, you can easily elevate your next brunch with a mimosa bar. So gather your gal pals, mix in some bubbly, and toast to making unforgettable memories!

PICK THE RIGHT BUBBLES

For a classic mimosa, reach for a dry champagne or prosecco. To add something a little different, try including a sparkling rosé to add a beautiful hue and fruity notes to your brunch cocktails.

KEEP IT FRESH WITH A VARIETY OF JUICES

Sure, orange juice is the traditional choice, so it’s practically required as an option. But also think outside the box for more creative options. Some of my favorite ideas: pineapple, grapefruit, cranberry, and mango.

TOP IT OFF WITH FUN GARNISHES

You can’t go wrong with fresh fruit, à la orange slices, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or pineapple wedges. For a refreshing twist, offer herbs and punchy flavors too. Fresh mint or basil adds an aromatic touch, while edible flowers, flavored sugar or salt rims, and a splash of flavored syrups make each sip memorable.

MAINLY VINTAGE

Popped into Mainly Vintage and Two Trick Pony Consignments to see if our homes were missing anything. We loved browsing their eclectic selection of antiques and unique finds, and the lotions and soaps from Caren are especially inspiring. Tara snatched up this pillow that captures her feelings perfectly.

FLASHBACK FUNTIQUES

The scents of the bath/body products inside Cielo were divine. We loved the gardenia room spray, and we found lovely vintage-style glass containers and gifts for upcoming birthdays. After that, we had too much fun playing pinball and slots at Flashback Funtiques. Billy and Heather Howards’ hospitality is unmatched—it seems like they always have a cold beverage ready for their visitors!

One more stop for high-end decor, jewelry, and gifts at Laurie Saunders. Then, we went over to Lost Oak Winery for a tasting—their nice, dry Trebbiano is a favorite—great conversation, and more “cheersing.”

APRIL’S ART HAUS  aprilsarthaus.com

We learned to make art with resin at our final location: April’s Art Haus. April customized our experience just for us, showing us how to select and arrange dried flowers and greenery into pretty custom pieces. Plus, she had charcuterie and drinks ready for us as we worked. It was the perfect end to a beautiful day out with friends!
