NIGHTLASE ®

Sleep

No Matter the Distance

As we age the flaccidity(looseness) of tissues increases. This is especially important for the entire airway. Upper airways become more restricted due to hard structures and soft tissue hypertrophy (Enlargement). The result is less airflow or volume. This resistance can be detrimental to sleep quality and athletic performance.

NightLase ® utilizes a twin laser system patented by Fotona Lasers. This procedure is a nonablative(no surgical cutting) technique utilizing laser impulses to tighten connective tissue, muscles, and their attachments to hold open the soft palate area and the upper nasal passages. The net result is increased airflow and volume during normal function, sleeping, and athletic performance.

This twin laser system is FDA approved for safety and effectiveness on the tissues treated. The standard procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and needs to be repeated 21 days apart for 3-4 sessions. No anesthetic is needed, and there is no downtime. Protocol maintenance is usually a one-session touch-up every 1-2 years or as needed.

Sharing the Journey

The Men’s Issue is one I look forward to every year. This year’s edition beautifully reminds us of a powerful truth: we are not meant to walk through life alone. We were created to walk alongside others—to share the journey, the challenges, and the triumphs.

Consider the cover story on the Von Erich men (“Wrestling For a Legacy” p. 64). Speaking about his sons, Kevin says, “It’s about loving people first. That’s what I’ve always tried to teach them.” Their story is a powerful example of how strong bonds between men shape character and community.

You’ll also find this theme in the heartfelt story from reader Rocky Whiting about his father and grandfather (“How Much For a Fox?” p. 58). It’s a moving reminder that the greatest lessons often come not from textbooks, but from the men who walk alongside us through life.

I feel especially blessed to serve on the elder team at Mission City Church. Among this group of men, there is a rare and beautiful transparency as we strive to serve God and steward our church community well. These are men who step up—not just in words, but in action—to support one another through life’s inevitable challenges. I am deeply thankful for them.

The Boerne 100 is another powerful example. They are committed to lifting up the nonprofits that are the backbone of our community. In a short time, I’ve witnessed a camaraderie among these guys rooted in action and generosity. They don’t just talk about making a difference, they roll up their sleeves and make it happen.

On a deeply personal note, years ago, God called my earthly father home. In his kindness, God also brought a spiritual father into my life. For the past 25 years, Louie Kaupp and I have met weekly. Our hour-long conversations are filled with fatherly love, biblical wisdom, and real accountability. Louie’s friendship and mentorship are treasures beyond measure.

I share all of this to encourage you: lean into the relationships God has placed around you. Cherish your fathers, brothers, and buddies. If you don’t yet have a group of men you can trust and walk with, reach out—talk to your pastor, or find a group that lives out a commitment to love and serve others.

At Boerne Lifestyle Magazine, our mission is simple yet profound: to shine a light on all that is good, beautiful, and inspiring in the greater Boerne community. We have no shortage of people who are making a real difference. This is your invitation—step in, get connected, and be part of the good work happening all around us.

Joshua Creek Ranch and San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Wildlife and Natural Resources Committee team up to support conservation and the youth of Texas

Get ready for an unparalleled celebration of the outdoor sporting lifestyle. For the first time, the Texas Hill Country Game Fair will bring a weekend filled with sporting brand exhibitions, engaging demonstrations, and opportunities to connect with outdoor experts and enthusiasts. Even better, these exciting experiences serve a purpose: to raise awareness and support for the conservation of our state’s natural resources and to educate the next generation of Texans. “We are excited to be partnering with Joshua Creek Ranch (JCR) to lead the way with this new event to provide additional funding and support for the benefit of the youth of Texas,” says Duane Westerman, the chair of the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo’s Wildlife and Natural Resources Committee.

On June 20-21, the scenic landscape of JCR will transform into a haven for outdoor sporting. This inaugural event is poised to become a cornerstone of the Texas Hill Country outdoor calendar for years to come, offering a unique blend of outdoor sporting activities and family-friendly entertainment. “This will be one of the biggest events we have ever hosted at Joshua Creek Ranch,” says Kevin Welborn, JCR’s Managing Director. “The Texas Hill Country Game Fair will be similar to other game fairs around the country, but with a Texas flair and underlying purpose that only a partner like the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo can support.”

The two-day fair will host a “Game Changer” celebration on Friday evening, featuring live music, chef-prepared hors d'oeuvres, an open bar, and a live auction showcasing hunting adventures, firearms, and other premium sporting items. On Saturday, the main attraction will be a creekside exhibitor village where attendees can explore a vibrant marketplace highlighting the latest in outdoor gear, firearms, fishing and hunting equipment, outfitters, sporting apparel, recreational vehicles, artisan goods, and more.

In addition to the actual Fair, Saturday will also include a mixed-discipline team shooting competition, buffet-style lunch, music entertainment, silent auction, informative trials and sampling, and interactive demos including shooting, fly fishing, dog field training, ranch tours, whiskey tastings, and educational briefings. “There will literally be something for everyone with our incredible list of sponsors, exhibitors, and activities!” Welborn declares proudly. “We anticipate growing the game fair into a destination event that attracts outdoor sporting enthusiasts from all over the country each year.”

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo has a long-standing tradition of supporting conservation and education through scholarships and grants, and this partnership with JCR extends that commitment to include a focus on outdoor sporting interests. JCR—renowned for its reputation as a world-class

wingshooting lodge and sporting resort, and for its 35-year dedication to sporting traditions—provides the perfect setting for this impactful event.

“In 2025, we will continue to offer our year-round hunter education courses, angler education, landowner educational seminars, and we have already awarded the first-ever Junior Taxidermy Scholarship,” boasts Westerman. “Through the game fair, we plan to grow these programs and expand into new scholarship opportunities to help shape the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.”

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA

Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.” Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life.

So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime.

Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estateland, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape—and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.

DRINK & DINE

Montana’s best kept secret? Our hideaway chefs, making waves from the Montana wilderness. Chef Brandon Cunningham, Executive Chef at the Green O, is a James Beard Award finalist whose creations at the Social Haus are highly curated through an 8-course tasting menu. Other highly trained and talented chefs like Chef Brett Edlund, Chef Ben Scott, Executive Pastry Chef Krystle Swenson, and Sunny Jin, the General Manager of Food and Beverage, are part of the intricate patchwork of the culinary experience at Pomp, Trough, Shed, Camp and the notable Chuck Wagon—a summertime treat where guests can ride a hay wagon along the banks of the Blackfoot River for an Old West-inspired chuck wagon dinner. The menu ranges from all-natural chicken and Tomahawk ribeye to fresh vegetables grilled over an open flame campfire.

HOW TO GET HERE

Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-squarefeet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent—ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).

For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.

Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-of-theart accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-emfrom-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.

FINDING Your Balance

CARLOS PORTER, M.D., OF PRIMARY CARE MEDICAL ASSOCIATES, EXPLAINS HOW MEN’S HORMONE THERAPY CAN RESTORE YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE.

ARTICLE BY AUBREY MATSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISON

Hormonal health plays a vital role in every person’s overall well-being, but it’s often an area that gets overlooked, particularly for men as they age. Just like women’s hormone therapy, men’s hormone management is just as crucial for maintaining health, vitality, and quality of life. Carlos Porter, M.D., is a seasoned family physician with Primary Care Medical Associates who specializes in hormone therapy for men, offering a range of services designed to balance hormones and promote overall health.

Porter’s career began with an undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, followed by medical school, residency, and an internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, where he studied family medicine. Today, his practice focuses on caring for adults of all ages, with an emphasis on managing chronic conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, and infections. However, one of the most critical areas of focus in his practice is men’s and women’s hormone therapy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FINDING BALANCE

One of the main reasons men seek hormone therapy is to counteract the effects of aging, which can include weight gain, increased fatigue, and a loss of strength. “As men age, they begin to lose muscle mass, and their sexual health often declines, which can affect their relationships,” Porter explains. Men often experience a range of symptoms that can signal a need for hormone therapy, from gradual weight gain and loss of strength to more significant health concerns like fatigue and decreased activity levels. “They put on 10 to 15 pounds per year, become more sedentary, and as a result, feel more fatigued,” Porter says. These changes often lead to a decrease in physical activity, which can further worsen the situation, creating a vicious cycle of declining health.

However, hormone imbalances can also be exacerbated by other factors. Chronic use of pain medications, obesity, and even the misuse of steroids can all interfere with natural testosterone production. "Steroid use can reduce natural testosterone production, which is why it’s important to consider hormone therapy that is medically supervised,” Porter notes. This professional approach is critical because self-directed care is not as reliable as medically approved treatments and can lead to further complications.

“PATIENTS ARE NOT AN ALGORITHM; we think through the problem and then find the best solution.”

HOW HORMONE THERAPY WORKS

Therapy isn’t just about treating numbers on a lab sheet; it’s about holistic wellness. Porter explains that the treatment is about addressing the broader impact of hormone imbalances on daily life. Testosterone therapy, in particular, plays a crucial role in restoring what men lose over time. “Testosterone therapy supports muscle mass, sexual health, and, in a lot of ways, it turns back the clock for men,” says Porter.

During an initial visit, Porter takes the time to understand the patient’s medical history, goals, and symptoms. “We don’t just treat off a number; we treat off of wellness,” he explains. After an examination and blood work to assess hormone levels, Porter develops a treatment plan tailored to the individual.

The practice offers a variety of testosterone replacement options, including injections and pellet therapy. Injections are typically administered weekly, which can cause fluctuations in hormone levels. For a more consistent and long-term solution, Porter recommends pellet therapy. A small pellet is injected under the skin, releasing testosterone gradually over four months. This approach helps maintain more consistent hormone levels, resulting in a smoother and more reliable experience for patients.

THE REWARDING ASPECTS OF HORMONE THERAPY

Porter says his favorite part of the job is the variety and the ability to create personalized care for each patient. Unlike specialists who treat acute conditions, Porter practices family medicine, which allows him to care for patients on a long-term basis, considering the full spectrum of their health. “We treat longitudinally. Family medicine is all about helping people live better, fuller lives,” he says. This approach to care enables him to monitor progress over time, adjust treatment plans, and ensure that each patient’s needs are met most effectively.

Ultimately, Porter’s goal is straightforward: to enhance his patients’ quality of life. “Patients are not an algorithm,” he says. “We think through the problem and then find the best solution.” For men dealing with the effects of aging or hormone imbalances, hormone therapy can provide a path toward regaining their strength, vitality, and confidence, leading to a better, more active life.

We love to start our day at our favorite family-friendly coffee shop, Spotted Deer Coffee Co. Since it opened, this Fair Oaks Ranch spot has become a treasured gathering place where we can unwind and enjoy quality time together. The atmosphere is warm, welcoming, and perfect for families. There’s a cozy couch, shelves of books, and the comforting smell of fresh-baked treats. The kids love sipping their specialty drinks, snacking on goodies, and getting lost in a story. And if we arrive later in the day, we also enjoy having lunch. Owner Gabriella McAllen—a Seattle native—opened the shop at 18 with her dad, Sean, and her mother, Veronica, and now runs it with her husband, Justin. More than just a coffee shop, Spotted Deer is a space that brings people together.

HOW MUCH For a Fox?

A BOERNE LIFESTYLE READER SHARES A FATHER’S TALE THAT TEACHES GENERATIONS THE VALUE OF INTEGRITY.

It's changed a lot, but Boerne was once a small farming and ranching community in Central Texas, a place where locals knew nearly everyone around. Ranching families worked hard, but finances were often tight. Livestock was a significant source of their income, but lambs and poultry were easily preyed upon by foxes. To help, Kendall County put a bounty on foxes. If you killed a fox, you would take proof to the county clerk's office, and collect a $2 reward. In a world where an entire BBQ chicken cost 50¢ and a Coke was 10¢, $2 was a lot of money.

My dad was the youngest of four kids in one of those ranching families. Growing up seven miles outside the city limits, he did well academically, played running back on the high school team, and was voted “most handsome” by his classmates. Even with the classroom learning, like many of the kids around him, his dad—my grandfather—was my dad’s most significant source of education.

Treila & Gary Whiting, 1967
Russell Whiting, 1970s

One evening in 1965, my dad took one of the school’s cheerleaders on a date to watch Boerne High School face off with New Braunfels Canyon. After the excitement of the game, they started the drive back home on the two-lane highway. In the glare of the halogen headlights, my dad spotted a roadkill fox lying on the side of the road. He instantly remembered the bounty and was excited about the tank of gas it would buy.

With no cars in sight, he turned the car around and stopped with the lights on the fox. He inspected the fox and found it to be only recently lifeless, so my dad took his proof with the sharp folding tool that all ranch kids carried for just such an occasion. His date didn't raise an eyebrow when he placed it in the trunk because she and her family were cut from the same cloth. The youthful pair continued back to Boerne without a question.

My dad—with a wry smile—replied, “Well, maybe the fox was born in Kendall and was just visiting relatives in Comal.” They both chuckled, but my dad, more seriously now, said, “The clerk isn’t going to be able to tell if this is a Comal fox or a Kendall fox. No one is going to know.” My grandfather responded, “There are three people who already know: me, you, and God.”

No sufficient rebuttal came to mind, so my dad shifted his focus back to the engine. A few seconds later, my grandfather said, “I’ll give you the $2 if you don’t turn them in.”

My dad made an exchange with a brushpile: a fox for a lifetime of integrity.

Before the sun got hot the next morning, my dad and grandfather were leaning over the engine compartment of a 1946 ranch Jeep. My dad, with grease on his forearms, proudly mentioned the fox he'd picked up the night before. My grandfather asked him, "Whereabouts did you pick up the fox?" When my dad told him, my grandfather paused, stood upright, and replied, "I think that's Comal County. It's pretty close to the county line, but they don't pay in Comal."

My dad was taken aback at the proposal. He knew my grandfather always did what he said, but my dad also knew that he never had money to spare.

No. You can't buy my honesty," my dad replied, "I'll just throw them away."

And so my dad made an exchange with a brushpile: a fox for a lifetime of integrity.

My five siblings and I heard this story a lot growing up. It seems that the older he gets, the more likely he is to get emotional toward the end. And that’s understandable. This one foundational experience has helped four generations understand that no amount of money can equal the value of your character.

Oh, and the cheerleader he took on the date?

That’s my mom.

My dad was the youngest of four kids in one of those ranching families. Even with the classroom learning, like many of the kids around him, his dad—my grandfather—was my dad’s most significant source of education.

Wrestling For a Legacy

Texas wrestling legends take a break from belts and body slams to make a home in the Hill Country.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Kevin Von Erich was lying in a hammock at his then-home in Hawaii when his wife, Pam, came outside with news that would mark the next chapter of his life. Hollywood was making a movie about his family.

“They didn’t need my permission,” he says, his voice carrying the calm weight of someone who’s lived enough to know what matters and what doesn’t. “I’d already turned down a half-dozen offers. Every one of them made us look like angry guys getting beat up. That wasn’t the truth. We had a beautiful story—if they’d only looked deeper.”

The Von Erich name is synonymous with wrestling royalty in Texas, especially after the 2023 film biopic about the family, The Iron Claw. While that story focused on the loss the family has faced, these days, Kevin and his sons, Ross and Marshall, are focused on legacy, healing, and finding community—and they’ve found that in Boerne, where the slower pace of life allows them to focus on what matters most.

“We always loved the Hill Country,” Kevin says. “I love water. Rivers, lakes—anything. Hawaii had that. But my sons’ careers were taking off. They were flying all over the world. That round-trip ticket [from Hawaii] was a burden on promoters in Japan and Europe.”

And then there were his granddaughters. “They’re at the age where they’re gonna start looking for men,” Kevin says with a wink. “I wanted them to find Texas men. Gentlemen… that’s what I want around my family.”

So a few years ago, the Von Erichs packed up and headed for the heart of Texas. Boerne, in particular, stood out. “There’s something about this town,” says Marshall. “We’d come through a few times while traveling, and it felt different. People like seeing each other here.” Ross agrees: "I haven’t met anyone I didn’t like, and I get to grow blackberries at home. I love that.”

It’s a far cry from the locker rooms of Tokyo, where Marshall and Ross cut their teeth in the wrestling world. “We were just kids,” Marshall says. “Getting beat up nightly, traveling constantly, sitting on our bags on buses. We didn’t even know how big Japan was for pro wrestling until we got there.”

On that path, the brothers spent years away from home, often wrestling in small towns with no English signage, communicating primarily through pain, grit, and mutual respect. They recall one particularly brutal trip where they were ready to quit. “We were on the roof of a building after a match, just exhausted,” Marshall says. “And we said this prayer— our first real one on our own. If we weren’t meant to do this, just show us.”

They went back down, wrestled another match, and got thoroughly beaten. But when they returned to that rooftop, they noticed something on the wall—an old etching that read “Kevin, David, 1982.” Their father and uncle had stood in that same spot decades earlier. “It was the moment we knew,” Marshall says. “God answered us. This is what we’re supposed to do.”

“There used to be a time when I’d pray and ask God for this or that. Now, I just ask him for a joyful heart. And every day, I wake up smiling.”
—Kevin Von Erich

Wrestling, however, is only part of their story. The brothers are deeply involved in their community. Along with wrestling, the family has an event venue on their property. They’ve teamed up with local law enforcement for community events, and they hope to collaborate more with local businesses (You might catch them hanging out at local Mexican restaurant Las Guitarras). “It’s funny,” Marshall says. “We’d just been talking about connecting with a local Texas business, and things just seem to align here.”

Career milestones accompanied their move to Boerne. When their contracts with Major League Wrestling were fulfilled, the brothers signed with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), an organization whose influence on the wrestling world is growing. That leap of faith was confirmed yet again. “All of a sudden, the movie comes out, AEW calls, and we’re sleeping in our own beds after matches for the first time ever,” Ross says. “That’s a big deal when you’ve been flying out of Hawaii every two weeks for years.”

For Kevin, seeing his sons find their path has been significant, especially after a life filled with so much loss. “I didn’t want them to wrestle,” he admits. “I’ve had so many injuries—knees, back, shoulders. But they saw me as this sore, bruised guy, and they thought that’s what a man was.”

Now, he sees them not only wrestling but shaping a new Von Erich legacy rooted in love, faith, and humility. “They operate from this mindset of, ‘We’re Von Erichs the second we step on a plane,’” Kevin says. “It’s about loving people first. That’s what I’ve always tried to teach them.”

Ross and Marshall have embraced that teaching. “There’s a saying in wrestling: ‘Put people over,’” Ross explains. “For us, that means encouraging everyone we meet. Make them feel seen. Make them feel loved.”

Their faith plays a quiet, steady role in their lives. “We’re not churchy,” Marshall says. “We’re more like gypsies—always on the road. But we’ve seen God work in ways that are undeniable. We don’t need a denomination for that.”

Today, Kevin explores nature with his grandkids, catching—but never hurting—critters and soaking in the stillness of early Texas mornings. He says his best days are spent with “muddy hands and a smiling grandson.” Sometimes, it’s frogs and fireflies. Other times, it’s monster trucks and laughter echoing into dusk. “I watch the sunrise every day,” he says. “I listen to the birds. I don’t need much more than that.”

He pauses, smiling at the thought of it all. The wrestling. The heartbreak. The healing. The roots now growing into the Hill Country soil. “There used to be a time when I’d pray and ask God for this or that,” he says. “Now, I just ask him for a joyful heart. And every day, I wake up smiling.”

DRIVING THE MESSAGE HOME

Custom vehicle wraps by Signarama can help your marketing make maximum impact.

Imagine you’re out for a drive with your family or friends, windows down, music up— and then it passes you. A car so cool, so bold, your whole crew goes silent. It’s not the make or model; it’s the wrap. Glossy, wild, or even glittery. Maybe it’s got a brand; maybe it just looks incredible. Either way, it’s made an impression, and you love it.

If you’ve seen an awesome-looking car driving around with an eye-catching wrap, chances are it’s one of Signarama’s latest works. While they offer a wide range of signage services, Matt and Kelly Mattingly have become particularly well-known for this standout specialty. It’s a distinctive space in the world of branding and visual impact that they’ve carved out for their locally owned shop. From full-body wraps that transform cars into mobile billboards to sleek, business-branded decals and creative custom graphics, the Mattinglys have established a reputation for excellence in turning vehicles into bold, mobile statements.

Matt and Kelly are not just business owners; they are proud parents to their two children, Maddie and Connor. But what sets them apart in the competitive wrap industry is their personalized approach and heightened attention to detail.

Each wrap is crafted with both the client’s vision and the vehicle’s design in mind. Whether it's a fleet of trucks for a local service company or a single sports car looking for a fresh, head-turning look, the Mattinglys guarantee precision, high-quality materials, and a flawless finish.

Their custom wrap process begins with an in-depth consultation, during which they listen to the client’s goals, branding, and style preferences. Using state-of-the-art design software, they produce an illustrated mock-up that lets the client visualize their idea before a single panel is printed. Once approved, the real magic begins. Their team works meticulously to apply the wrap, making sure every edge is smooth, every line is clean, and the overall look reflects both professionalism and personality. And with their recent 18,000-square-foot expansion, they can get larger fleets rolling.

What really allows the Mattinglys’ wraps to truly stand out is their ability to combine functionality with creativity. Their wraps aren’t just about aesthetics—they serve a purpose. For businesses, these vehicle wraps serve as high-impact marketing tools that generate thousands of impressions daily, eliminating the ongoing costs associated with traditional advertising. For personal use, wraps offer paint protection and an opportunity for self-expression without the permanence or price tag of a complete paint job.

But Matt and Kelly’s dedication doesn’t stop at the design and installation phase. They also educate their clients on how to care for their wraps to ensure they last as long as possible, maintaining vibrancy and durability even in the harsh Texas sun. That customer-first mindset is part of how they’ve built lasting relationships across Boerne and the surrounding Hill Country area.

In the end, the Mattinglys’ success with Signarama is not just about vinyl and vehicles—it’s about passion, service, and community. The couple has turned their craft into a local staple, helping other businesses grow while also elevating the look and feel of the community’s streets, one wrapped vehicle at a time. So, whether you're a business owner looking to take your marketing mobile or a car enthusiast wanting to stand out, Matt and Kelly at Signarama are the go-to experts for vehicle wraps that truly deliver.

BEERS & CHEERS

It’s the Creativity and Camaraderie That Keeps Boerne’s Craft Beer Scene Getting Better and Better

ARTICLE BY DANIEL GERTSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIEL GERTSON & EVAN HENSON

They say that at one point, Boerne had the highest number of breweries per capita of any city in the nation. I don’t know how true that is or was, but Boerne’s beer scene is still one of the best by any measure. Six breweries are operating now, pumping out award-winning brews and crafting a culture that brings people together, over a pint and in life.

We’ve certainly celebrated some of the key figures in our community’s beer scene over the years, but it has been too long since we took stock of the state of Boerne’s brews. To do so, I rounded up some friends (Mike, Cris, Evan, and Rob), including veterans and newcomers to Boerne beers, and visited every brewery in town, tasting almost every beer on offer along the way. So, check them off if you’ve been and make plans for those you haven’t, as we present the definitive guide to Boerne brewing—at least until the kegs run out and we need to start over.

28 SONGS BREWHOUSE + KITCHEN

110 Market Ave. | 28songs.beer

Founder Don Kretz has been slinging suds on Boerne’s north end for two years, using his single-vessel system to turn out an eye-popping variety and quantity of beers. Seriously… they had close to 20 of their own beers on tap. That assortment of beer, the food, and

the vibe bring people back, which Kretz says is his favorite part: “I tell people all the time that since we’ve opened, we’ve made hundreds of new friends.” Stop by and become their newest!

Our Favorites: Bonfire Blonde; Electric Armadillo; Look Ma, No Hands

FREE ROAM BREWING CO.

325 S. Main St. | freeroambrewing.com

Ever since co-founders Jeremy Affeldt (CEO, beauty) and Jaron Shepherd (Brewmaster, brains) set up shop along the Hill Country Mile three years ago, they’ve been leading the way and turning their historic building into Boerne’s backyard. Jaron likes to get creative, building recipes from seasonal and regional ingredients and making it happen with whatever sleep he can get as a new dad. Live music, food trucks, and community events like a men’s night and run club keep the place packed no matter what’s on tap.

Our Favorites: Luke, I am Your Patersbier; High Fence; Choco Rojo

HAMBY’S

437 S. Main St. | ci.boerne.tx.us/2401/Hambys

As a spin-off of Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. across the street, you may think the beer at Hamby’s is an afterthought. It is a burger stand, after all. Not so, says manager Beck Messimer. “We have other things too, but you’re not going to find a brewery around here that does so many lagers. The fact that they're crisp and easy to drink, and the variety that we have is pretty cool.” And they pair perfectly with the burgers, ice cream treats, and vintage pinball.

Our Favorites: Mazour Czech Pils; Pint Break; Tart Apple Gose

THE DODGING DUCK BREWHAUS & RESTAURANT

402 River Rd. | dodgingduck.com

This place is the granddaddy of the Boerne beer scene, and it’s seen it all in its nearly quarter century of brewing. Aptly named for its spot on River Road, the Dodging Duck has been a favorite for great beers, tasty bites, and chill vibes for decades. Despite the many years of service, they keep things fresh with a tap list that rotates regularly, so there’s always something fresh and flavorful to try. Just watch out for the quackers.

Our Favorites: Duck and the Giant Peach; Lukenbacher Hefeweizen; Darkwing Duck Nitro Stout

CIBOLO CREEK BREWING CO.

448 S. Main St. | cibolocreekbrewing.com

One of the first breweries you notice along South Main, this is where craft beer meets culinary flair. Their house-brewed beers pay homage to the local area's history, landscape, and people, offering unique flavors for every palate. Pair your pint with inventive dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The brewery also hosts live music on their patio, providing a bubbly backdrop to your dining experience. Whether you're a beer aficionado or just in for the vibes, Cibolo Creek will keep you coming back.

Our Favorites: Boerne Blonde; Belle Saison; Paul Rudd Double Vision

TUSCULUM BREWING CO.

236 S. Main St. | tusculum.beer

Since this crew took over the historic H.O. Adler Building and opened in 2019, they’ve been doing things right. They have their staples, but the seasonals mean there’s something fun and new to try all year long. As one of four breweries along Main St., co-founder Tripper Matthews says his favorite things about Boerne’s beer scene are the friendships and community they’ve formed. “All of us in town like to say we don’t have competitors, we have compadres. Boerne’s for beers and cheers!” We’ll drink to that!

Our Favorites: Lion Slide; Foggy Donkey; Kinda Lucky

MIKE-RO-BREWERY

mike-ro-brewery.com

This one’s the hidden gem that shows you’re really in the know. It’s actually a passion project for Mike Hagan, who loves brewing and serving it up for his community. You can find him at various events throughout his brewing season (late November to early May), where he gives away his beer and collects donations for Hill Country Family Services and Hill Country Animal Shelter. Like his friend Scott says, “Mike is extremely social, so anything that brings folks together is what he’s about.” So be careful when you meet him; he might just invite you over.

DAD’S DAY PANCAKES

Even the kids can help make these cinnamon roll pancakes from @showythecook that Dad is sure to love!

• Pancake mix

• 16 ounces vanilla frosting

• 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

• 1 cup brown sugar

• 8 tablespoons butter, divided, plus more for cooking

• 1 pound ground breakfast sausage

• Salt

• Maple syrup

• Fresh mint or edible flowers

directions:

Step 1. Prepare pancake mix according to package instructions. Let rest for at least 10 minutes. Brown sausage in a skillet and set aside. Wash and de-stem mint/edible flowers.

Step 2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 4 tablespoons of butter with icing. Microwave for 15 seconds and then stir. Repeat until icing is smooth and thin enough to drizzle.

Step 3. In another microwave-safe bowl, mix remaining butter with cinnamon and brown sugar. Add salt to taste. Microwave for 30 seconds and then stir. Repeat in 15-second intervals, stirring each time until smooth and thin enough to drizzle.

Step 6. Garnish with mint leaves/flowers, serve, and tell Dad he’s the best!

A Summer of Plenty

Debi Watson at Hill Country Daily Bread

Ministries shares how we can help make sure no child goes hungry this summer.

YOUR SUMMER HUNGER CAMPAIGN IS GOING ON NOW. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

When school ends, hunger begins for many children in our community. In Kendall County, nearly one-in-five children are food insecure during the summer months. Schools provide up to two meals a day for many children during the school year. Additionally, during the summer, families often face higher grocery costs with kids home all day, and accessing a food pantry can be a challenge. These are local children, right here in Boerne and the surrounding areas, who lose access to school breakfast and lunch programs over the break.

HOW

MANY

MEALS DO YOU HOPE

TO DELIVER?

Our goal is to provide 35,000 kidfriendly meals this summer. That equals approximately 5,000 bags, each containing seven easy-to-prepare and nutritious meals. These will provide food for children who would otherwise go without.

WHAT IS THE HEART BEHIND THIS SUMMER EFFORT?

We believe poverty alleviation is about more than material things—it’s about experiencing the love of Christ, dignity, community, and long-term transformation. This campaign is an extension of our year-round efforts to walk alongside people who need basic resources, with a particular focus on addressing the food insecurity faced by our community’s children.

HOW CAN PEOPLE HELP?

Everyone is invited to pick up, fill up, and drop off one or more Summer Hunger Bags at our facility in Boerne. Group drives are welcome, and we’re happy to provide bags in bulk. Each bag contains a shopping list and a card for you to sign and decorate for the family who will receive your bag. Of course, people can always donate online or find our Amazon wish list on our website!
