Why is cybersecurity important for small businesses? (FCC.gov)

As a dedicated real estate agent and passionate equestrian, I am honored to be featured in this month’s issue of Boerne Lifestyle Magazine. From the thrill of the show ring to the satisfaction of finding the perfect equestrian property, my journey has been one of passion, dedication, and success. I am grateful to my wonderful clients who have entrusted me with their real estate needs, allowing me to turn their dreams into reality. With each sale of a horse-friendly property, I am reminded of the unique bond between horse and rider, and the importance of finding a home that accommodates both.
I am excited to share my expertise and knowledge of both the equestrian world and the real estate market to serve the needs of our community. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey, and I look forward to continuing to make dreams come true, one property at a time.

Dear Readers,
As May blooms into our lives, it brings with it one of my favorite themes: celebrating the incredible women in our community. This issue is dedicated to the ladies who grace our lives with their presence, their strength, and their unwavering spirit.
Our community is a tapestry woven with remarkable women from all walks of life. From trailblazers in traditionally male-dominated fields to those who generously devote their time, talents, and resources to uplift others, our community is enriched by their presence (“Dream, Grow, Lead,” p. 42)
Reflecting on my own journey, I am profoundly aware of the influential women who have shaped me. Their impact knows no bounds, transcending age and time. I invite you to ponder: who are the extraordinary women in your life, past or present, who have played a pivotal role in shaping the person you are today?
In this month's travel feature, I had the privilege of spending time with some remarkable local ladies. What struck me most was the vibrant energy that radiates when positive women come together. In their company, there is not only camaraderie but also a sense of encouragement, laughter, and joy. (“Best. Trip. Ever.”, p. 30)
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it's easy to overlook the importance of taking moments to pause and replenish our spirits. Yet, it is precisely in these moments of self-care that we find the strength to continue nurturing and supporting those we love and the causes dear to our hearts.
As we celebrate Mother's Day this month, let us extend our gratitude to all the mothers and mother figures who have shaped us with their love, wisdom, and sacrifices.
May this issue serve as a tribute to the incredible women in our lives and a gentle reminder to cherish the moments of connection, laughter, and love that they bring into our lives.
Many Blessings,

I am thankful for these ladies that have been a part of my life since I was a toddler. They call each other the Investment Group and their name suits them well. They have invested in the lives of their families, their faith, and their friendships for 40+ years. The positive impact they each have made on my life cannot even be expressed in words, but one thing I can say is how grateful I am that I have gotten to witness a group of ladies fight for each other through the storms of life. They inspire me. Inviting them to a weekend in the Hill Country and getting to do all things Boerne was a memory I will hold in my heart forever. Find your tribe.

Imagine a day when you can relinquish the stress of coordinating a schedule, your glass never goes empty, and you’re surrounded by the women you love; a girls' trip where you leave the planning to the pros, and each experience is customized just for you and your besties. Sound too good to be true? Well, it is true with Boerne Wine Tours.
To get a taste of everything they offer, we recruited local luxury real estate agent Tamara Strait to round up her gal pals for a day-cation in fabulous Fredericksburg. Buckle up and come along as the clique partied at some of Hill Country's most deluxe destinations.
First stop? Brooke’s Bubble Bar, where manager Sandra greeted us at the front door
and welcomed us into a paradise of pink. Everyone’s faces lit up with a mix of amazement and wonder. From the bar to the bathroom, the whole venue was a tasteful collage of quintessential girlhood. In 2020, Brooke Rogan returned to her hometown and found a “pinkified” vehicle to cruise around in style. With her glamorous entrepreneurial cap on, Rogan launched a wine tour business that took the town by storm. The pink fleet grew, so Rogan built a headquarters and hangout made by a woman for women. On this day, laughter echoed from the Limo Lounge, where the ladies talked with mimosas in hand—until grumbling stomachs meant it was time to move on.
ARTICLE BY SOPHIE WINTERLE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISONOur group was still buzzing with excitement (and champagne) as we entered Burger Burger, the bustling bistro on Main St., bursting with the life of a 50’s diner. Fun signs adorned the walls; one that gave us a good laugh read, “May The Fries Be With You.” And indeed they were. Our table was filled with a variety of dishes in record time. The smash burger got rave reviews, but the real highlight was the salted caramel boozy shake. We were cordial as we shared, but things (jokingly) got tense as we fought over the last sip. A burger joint might not be the first lunch spot that comes to mind when going out with the ladies, but it was exactly what we needed to cushion our stomachs for the delights that were still to come.
A short drive east took us to Blumenthal Farms, which wowed us instantly. In another era, this was a farming town founded in the 1870s, complete with a saloon, dance hall, a few homes, and a cotton gin. A tornado and the decades reduced the hamlet to history until Chelsea Crossland came looking for the perfect place for an outdoor concert venue. Inspired by the past and the land's possibilities, Crossland officially opened Blumenthal Farms in 2023. Now, the renovated buildings and property include a tasting room, cigar bar, pickleball court,

amphitheater, putting green, and a general store—all situated just a few yards up the shore of the Pedernales River. The venue’s rich history is on display in the original steam engine that sits outside the floor-to-ceiling windows encompassing the main room. The decorations ooze luxury but are comfy enough to make you feel at home. In the cigar bar, Lele lights up the room with her old-fashioned presentation. We were mesmerized, and a few of us indulged in a cherry cigar that brought sweetness into the air. Blumenthal Farms was a truly remarkable experience we won’t forget.
The last stop was Slate Theory Winery, an all-encompassing winery built by Randy Jones rooted in psychology and human connection. With a name inspired by John Locke’s philosophy, our group was eager to learn how every step of the wine-making and tasting experience takes place on the vast estate—growing the grapes, developing the flavors, producing the bottles, and tasting the final product. We enjoyed a selection of bottles like the “Antisocial,” a red blend, and the Sangiovese Rosé was so delightful that we
had to bring a bottle home. But Slate Theory’s most impressive feature? The cellar. Spanning 9,000 square feet, the industrial glam space houses hundreds of barrels of wine and ten beautifully decorated cubbies where guests can indulge in privacy and comfort.
This was a destination we were not inclined to leave. The end of our trip was approaching, but the call of our quaint short-term rental made piling into the van for one last drive easier to handle. The Hackberry Haus by Gästehaus Schmidt was beautiful and charming—a perfect mix of Hill Country chic and modern elegance. The private guesthouse was cozy for all who stayed, and the hot tub was exactly what we needed after our fabulous day. Gästehaus Schmidt offers vacation rentals all over town and even in the countryside for an authentic getaway experience.
What an epic trip! You could have one too with Boerne Wine Tours. The entire experience was fun and straightforward, and each destination offered stellar service and precious memories. So round up your best friends and take your next girls’ trip to fabulous heights!
We are so grateful for the generosity of the people and companies who made this incredible trip possible. Show them some love and make your next trip the best!

DR. CATHERINE YOUNG IS EXCITED FOR WOMEN IN HER WORKPLACE
It is not often easy to be a woman in medicine. But Catherine Young, D.D.S. of Young Dental Aesthetics, has demonstrated determination and dedication in forging her own path, and she’s committed to bringing up other women with her.
Young began her journey to the east in Brenham, where its famous Blue Bell Ice Cream definitely didn’t hurt her grandfather’s dental practice. She worked in her grandfather’s office before finishing her undergraduate work at Texas State and dental school in San Antonio. During that season, Young got to know Jack Shirley, D.D.S., who offered to sell Young his practice in 2019.
Fresh out of school, Young found herself learning fast. “It was an adjustment; the trust [with patients] wasn’t there, so I had
to take that and turn that,” Young recalls. Learning to nurture relationships with existing patients while growing the practice was a challenging but formative experience. “It’s not just about teeth and a smile,” she says. “You are treating a person.”
Many people fear interacting with medical professionals, and Young is sensitive to those feelings. Women especially can face challenges receiving medical care. Suppose a woman is apprehensive about treatment because she has battled cancer or is going through menopause. In that case, Young will address these challenges with her patient during the initial consultation. She says it’s vital that women communicate openly with their providers to feel as comfortable as possible.
The future is looking brighter to Young. She is encouraged by how many more women are entering the dental field. Young
says that dentistry has been male-dominated, but she’s noticing more parity. “It shows that we as females are strong enough and have the willpower to juggle not only personal life but also a place of business and do what we love,” she says.
For all the young women considering a career in dentistry, Young’s advice is simple: “Go for it!” she says emphatically. Young notes that dental school has challenges but is extremely rewarding. She says women can absolutely find a balance between things they love, whether that includes relationships, family, or a career. She has the work, a supportive husband, and a three-year-old son to prove it. “Do not let anyone stop you. Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot; you absolutely can!”

HOW FIVE WOMEN INSPIRE US ALL AS THEY GUIDE BOERNE INTO A BRIGHTER TOMORROW
ARTICLE BY BRANDI JAMESON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VMBoerne has grown rapidly in recent years, and its sense of community has grown, too. This reality is driven home every day, thanks in no small part to these impactful and inspiring women. They serve our city in a variety of ways, but they all share a common desire to leave Boerne better than they found it. Meet five women who embody Boerne's best and are making our community's future even brighter.
When Boerne Police Officer Rebecca Foley saw a need for a mental health officer in the community, she was happy to take on the challenge of a new program. “We’re the first in the area, which we’re pretty excited about.”
Foley’s career in law enforcement and first responder roles has been extensive. She worked as an EMS dispatcher, EMT, and firefighter in Terrell Hills. In Boerne, she started as a Community Officer, where she enjoyed attending city events, including Coffee with Cops, parades, and school meet-and-greets. “Boerne is overwhelmingly loving and supportive,” Foley says. “We have a community that is very pro-law enforcement, which helps us build trust.”
“Boerne is overwhelmingly loving and supportive. We have a community that is very pro-law enforcement, which helps us build trust.”
Now, in her role as Mental Health Officer, Foley is focused on bringing new resources to the area. She co-chairs the Kendall County Behavioral Health Advisory Coalition and is planning for a local center where those struggling with mental health issues can receive help and guidance. Foley is also currently working on her second master’s in counseling. She hopes the extra knowledge will better serve those she encounters in the field because she genuinely cares about Boerne. “This is the most amazing community, and I plan to be here a very long time.”
When Dr. Kristin Craft became Boerne ISD’s Superintendent in January, this latest step in her 28-year education career made her the first woman to lead the district. “I feel deeply honored,” Craft says about being considered an inspirational woman.
Craft began her career in Houston as a teacher for six years before becoming an assistant principal and principal. She credits a mentor from her first year for encouraging her to pursue a master’s in administration. “I love puzzles, and I think school administration is a big puzzle. I’m able to see the big picture, break it down into small pieces, and help do intentional strategic planning to go from point A to point B.”
While recognizing Boerne’s rapid growth, Craft also knows there’s a strong desire to retain Boerne’s
“Parents are our partners, and we have an incredibly generous community. That’s a great combination of school partnerships because we cannot do it alone.”
small-town charm. The district currently educates almost 11,000 students in 12 schools, and a 13th school is expected to open this August. “Everyone I’ve met is 100% focused on the success of our students and our schools,” she says. “Parents are our partners, and we have an incredibly generous community. That’s a great combination of school partnerships because we cannot do it alone.”
Inspired by the critical value families put on education, Craft takes the responsibility of being a community role model seriously. “I just want to encourage all of our kids to dream big and know the future is in their hands,” Craft says. “We’re going to do our very best to prepare them, and we can’t wait to see what they do in the future.”
“A sense of purpose will take you places. It’ll be more beautiful than you can imagine.”
Chicago native Kriss-Abigail Paredes never imagined a future as a wild game processor. Starting as an urban photographer of fashion editorials and burlesque shows, but having her equipment stolen pushed her in another direction.
After a stint in the restaurant industry, Paredes answered a Craig’s List ad for game processing in Texas to improve her knife skills. Instead, she stumbled onto a new career path. “I fell in love,” Paredes remembers. “There’s something about making food for a hunter who killed an animal and is entrusting me to make food for their family. It’s a huge honor.”
Paredes is now a wild game butcher and processing manager for Alamo Meat Market and Provisions in Comfort. She also participates in Hunt Camps and works with the San Antonio Food Bank, teaching classes on skinning, butchering, and processing deer. “I love being able to share my knowledge,” says Paredes. “There’s a constant connection between animals and the food on our tables. I want to humanize the people behind the food and create empathy through compassionate education.”
As the only female wild game butcher she knows, Paredes hopes she inspires others to follow their passion. “A sense of purpose will take you places. It’ll be more beautiful than you can imagine.”
“We hope to continue increasing the growth while keeping a sense of community. We want to still be personable and help everyone feel included.”
Since she became president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce in 2019, Kimberly Blohm has put her stamp on Boerne. A Houston native and Texas A&M University grad, she and her husband moved their three kids to his hometown, drawn by the schools and family-oriented community.
As Chamber President, Blohm advocates, educates, and communicates with the town’s businesses. She helps companies connect so they can grow, and she also works with the broader community to include local companies in Boerne events, like last month’s spectacular solar eclipse. Blohm says, “We helped create a business guide beforehand and established special event protocols to help with crowd management.”
Since becoming president, Blohm and her team have doubled the Chamber’s membership and engagement, making Boerne the third-largest Chamber in the area. “We hope to continue increasing the growth while keeping a sense of community. We want to still be personable and help everyone feel included.”
That work drives her and has made her an inspiration to others. “It makes me feel really good; I’m proud of it,” Blohm says. “It gives me purpose like I can do it all in a balanced way. And that’s what I hope will inspire people.”
“Figure out what you can do to give back. The rest will fall into place.”
It wasn’t Judge Kirsten Cohoon’s goal to take a position on the bench. A fifth-generation Kendall County girl, she says the opportunity fell into her lap while serving as Boerne’s City Attorney. “My husband thought I should try and get the appointment for the judge,” Cohoon recalls. “I prayed on it, and it became clear that was what I was supposed to do.”
When she didn’t receive the appointment in 2017, Cohoon assumed the door had been closed. However,
the people disagreed when she won her election in 2019. “I realized the door was still open; it was just that God didn’t want me to take it that way,” she says. “It’s so much more rewarding to have the people choose you.”
Cohoon is the only District Court Judge in Kendall County, so she hears every criminal and civil case. She says adoptions are her favorite, and she is proud of her high clearance rate, which means she resolves cases swiftly, and fewer people must stay in jail. After all, “Justice delayed is justice denied,” she says.
As a community leader, Cohoon hopes to inspire the next generation of citizens. “Just keep your ears and your eyes open. Figure out what you can do to give back. The rest will fall into place.”
JANE BLOMQVIST SHARES HER LIFE ON THE TRACK AND HOW SHE INSPIRES THE NEXT GENERATION
ARTICLE BY AUBREY MATSON“This
is our 11th summer. We’ve graduated ten classes.”
With over a decade of Hill Country Comets Track Club behind her, coach Jane Blomqvist is no stranger to pouring hard work and determination into young athletes in Boerne. But that’s also because she has dedicated her life to athletics, particularly in track. “Track and field was my primary sport, although I did basketball and softball also,” says Blomqvist. Also a nurse
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PAULA VMand the Patient Care Manager with Embrace Hospice & Home Care, it's Blomqvist’s care for others and passion for seeing young people thrive that keeps her going.
Blomqvist attended Angelo State University on a track and field scholarship. After marrying and moving to the Hill Country, Blomqvist’s husband (whom she met on the track) still competed internationally for his native Sweden. “When we were having our children, they were at track meets with us,” remembers Blomqvist. “We started putting them in track meets from a very early age, probably three or four.” By the time her children were six years old, they wanted to be on a
team too. However, there wasn’t a team for them in Boerne, and they were not interested in making the drive to San Antonio to find one. “So,” Blomqvist explains, “we decided just to start our own club.”
When they started, the team consisted of about 20 athletes. Today, that number has multiplied exponentially. “Last summer, we were at about 350 athletes,” said Blomqvist. "Our mission was always to make it a primary sport for kids.”
When competing in the 80s and 90s, Blomqvist remembers that women with athletic builds were not celebrated. “I grew up feeling kind of weird amongst my peers because I was super athletic, very
“I remember finally feeling comfortable in my body and being able to celebrate what a strong girl is.”
muscular,” she recalls. “I didn’t fit the mold of a ‘cute 1980s girl.’ I was always very self-conscious about how I looked because I was so athletic.” Blomqvist said that when she went to college, this wholly changed—suddenly, young women with muscular, athletic builds like hers were all around her. “I remember finally feeling comfortable in my body and being able to celebrate what a strong girl is,” noted Blomqvist.
That’s a lesson that moves her work today. “Over the past 11 years, I’ve been able to see girls along the way in the same struggle,” Blomqvist says. She remembers the high school coaches who served as
essential mentors to her; now, she works to provide that same mentorship to the young women she coaches. “We’re able to open up so many avenues for girls and show that there is a huge need at any level for track and field in college. [I want to] show them that there’s a whole path for them if they want to do track and field.”
Today, The Comets send 30 to 60 athletes to state and national competitions each summer. After over a decade of competitive track and field in Boerne, Blomqvist continues pushing and inspiring young athletes to reach their utmost potential. “If we can have a hand in being able to get someone to school paid or partially paid,
that’s huge for us.” Scholarships from the schools are welcome, and The Comets have also been awarding scholarships for the past four years. “We want to give back to our community,” Blomqvist says. “Our community has given so much to us.”
Commitment and accountability are two traits Blomqvist says are necessary to be a champion, so she teaches them to every athlete she coaches. “I’m huge on commitment,” she says. You can’t expect to reach the next level in anything if you don’t put the work in—and that goes for your whole life.”

The women of Boerne do so much for the community. That includes leading our school district, keeping our neighborhoods safe, and nurturing the next generation. But the power of women to impact our society is especially on display through two philanthropic organizations that allow women to pool their efforts to make a difference. Both 100 Women of the Hill Country and The Sister Project are made up of women intent on giving back to those around them and beyond.
Serving more than six counties throughout the region, 100 Women of the Hill Country has donated over $200,000 to local charities since August of 2021. The group consists of 100 women who meet four times a year and pool their resources to support nonprofit organizations in the area. . At each of their events, the ladies engage socially with the other women in their community and hear from local charities as they present their mission and needs. Every quarter, one charity is selected to receive a donation from 100 Women of $10,000 toward their vital work.
100 Women of the Hill Country has awarded financial contributions to a variety of organizations, including Aid the Silent, Camp Agape, and Texas Burn Survivors. All membership costs go directly to the philanthropy chosen at the quarterly meetings. Members say some of their favorite experiences are getting updates from organizations that have benefited in the past as they share about the powerful work their ministry or program has done in our community.
A self-professed “giving circle,” The Sister Project is a ministry that supports local charities and is funded completely by the women who join. Each woman who participates donates $1,000 each year, and 100% of those funds go entirely towards the annual grants.
The Sister Project was founded over a decade ago and has since donated nearly $1,000,000 towards various ministries that help women and families in need. Members strive to live up to the group’s mission statement, which says, “The Sister Project seeks to shine the light of Christ by aiding, assisting, and encouraging women in need through the combined gifts of women.”
The Sister Project benefits ministries that positively impact the lives of women and their children in our area. Nonprofits interested in pursuing grants can fill out the application online, and non-members can even make donations online or by check. Past beneficiaries include Filters of Hope, Project Red, Handspun Hope, and many more.
“What do you wish you had known when you were younger?” It’s a common question but one we can often get too busy to answer. The demands of daily life can make reflection and introspection difficult, but the practice can often lead to a better life.
“Psychologically, our brain’s memory center stores life events and experiences and encodes them with a layer of emotion attached to the memory,” says Gillian Rodriguez of Trellis Counseling & Co. PLLC. “This is also how we learn from mistakes, develop iterations of ourselves, and do more of what we remember as joyful and fulfilling.”
Rodriguez’s work includes experience as a trauma counselor, so she knows that looking back on the past can sometimes be painful. While avoiding unhelpful mentalities of “toxic positivity” or “good vibes only,” processing difficult experiences—especially with the help of a professional—can lead to great healing. “I take the approach that our past is a place to visit, but not a place to stay. This gives a nod to the meaning and weight of past experiences, yet also acknowledges that the present moment is ours to seize, and the life we have yet to live is one that includes new discoveries.”
In this spirit, we asked the women of Boerne to share some of the advice and grace they have for their younger selves. We’re so grateful to the many who responded on our social media, and we’re especially grateful to the women of Morningside at Menger Springs for sharing their wisdom.

How Three Boerne Women Found Their Passion and Made Their Mark With Horses
ARTICLE BY REY LOPEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BROOKE LYONSAsk any of these three women to sum up their passion in one word, and you will likely hear the same answer: horses. But dig a little deeper into the responses from Susan Hallmark, Susie Phillips, or Andi Weekley. You'll find that while they each share a love for all things equine, their individual stories and their involvement with one of the most beautiful and majestic members of the animal kingdom are as unique as—well—each of the horses they work with.
As a realtor specializing in luxury residential, new home, and farm and ranch sales, Susan Hallmark has enjoyed a long and successful career for over forty years. However, she has also found joy in breeding miniature horses for over three decades. And it all started with an anniversary gift.
"I was a city girl born and raised in San Antonio," explains Hallmark. "My boys in their teen and college years had horses and roped calves. I was not familiar with horses and was, frankly, afraid of them. So, for my 25th wedding anniversary, my family gave me a miniature horse. They said that it's just a smaller version, so you can learn how to take care of them. Little did I know this first horse started as a hobby and ultimately a business with a horse breeding operation of approximately 80 horses at one time."
Susie Phillips is co-owner of Corrival Ranch, which bills itself as "a premier Quarter Horse and breeding facility that also offers a world-class rehabilitation center." Phillips grew up on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, the largest on the East Coast, and has been around horses her entire life.
"My parents encouraged my love for horses. I was bullied in junior high and high school," Phillips recalls. "Horses made dealing with all of that easy. I was involved with 4-H and FFA, intercollegiate horse judging, and showing horses, and I am active in both the American Paint Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. I built an extended family in the horse industry, who aren't even blood-related."
Like Phillips, Wyoming-born Andi Weekley, Vice President of the Youth Horse Club of the Hill Country, grew up around horses. "My dad was an outfitter, and we lived on the side of a mountain between Cody and Yellowstone," she explains. "He worked with mules, dude horses, and Belgian Draught Horses. I started roping in high school, rodeoed for a year, and then moved to Stephenville, where I mainly team roped and ran barrels." While living in Stephenville, she met her husband Mark Weekley—a former rodeo professional himself—and moved to San Antonio after they married.
Through their varied involvement with horses, Hallmark, Phillips, and Weekley each express a personal connection that affects them deeply.
"Horses were and are my therapy," says Hallmark. "I've sold real estate longer than having the horses, and some days, you just have to come home, sit out at the barn, and love on these tiny horses."
She also credits her love for miniature horses as a boon to her work as a realtor. "I lived on the ranches and learned about wells, fencing, barns, cattle, growing hay, etc. Those skills are now an asset that can assist other new ranch buyers."
Through Corrival Ranch, Phillips shares her love for horses by giving special needs kids life-changing experiences. "Whenever you work with children with special needs or other mental issues or struggle to find where they fit in, watching them take the reins of a 1200-pound animal is one of the best and

Caring for horses is a form of reflection.”
—Andi Weekley
most exciting things. Watching a child accomplish something that seemed impossible to them, there's nothing like that."
Weekley's affection for horses is rooted in a story from her younger days. "When I was a kid, we had a big plot of land. My mom would never let me ride in a saddle,” she remembers. “There was this squeeze gate, and I had to get off and on the bareback to get through it. This wasn't always the easiest thing to do. My horse at the time, Chance, would move to the fence so I could get on him. That's the beauty of working with horses. When you care for a horse, they take care of you."
All three women have worked hard to make their respective marks in the industry. Last year, Hallmark and her horse “Parade” won the Driving Horse of the Year in the 34" and under classes with the American Miniature Horse Registry in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She also earned the World Grand Champion High Point
Driving Horse at the American Miniature Horse Association World Show in Ft. Worth.
In October 2023, Phillips won her first Congress Championship at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress with her horse “Al That Matters Most.” It was a significant achievement for her and the horse since they competed in the world's largest Quarter Horse show.
As a member of the Junior High Rodeo Association state Board of Directors, Weekley is committed to passing along her passion for horses to succeeding generations. "Horses have always been my passion," she beams. “I love helping other kids get involved, especially those without the opportunities I had. I love mentoring them."
Weekley also has a unique and philosophical take on these majestic animals. "It's fun to see the patience a horse can teach you," Weekley muses. "Horses are very savvy and remember more than you think they do. Horses are very forgiving animals, and their love is consistent. Caring for horses is a form of reflection."

THE GENIUS BEHIND LOST BUDDY SPICES SHARES HER FAVORITE, MOUTH-WATERING RECIPES
ARTICLE BY SARAH WILBURN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSI EDISONLost Buddy Original Dry Rub has been in my family for four generations, so I have literally been enjoying it for my entire life. My parents used to give it away to anyone who asked… we even gave it as our wedding favor in 2010!
When I decided it was time to start selling it, I knew we would have the support of family and friends who had been enjoying it for years. I was so thrilled when Chef Jared Campbell approached me about bringing Garden Salt into the Lost Buddy family of products; it is the perfect complement to the Original Dry Rub.
We have lots of plans for the future and can't wait to grow, but for now, here are some of my favorite recipes that feature our spices. If you’re anything like my friends and family, I guarantee you’re going to love them!

A GUIDE TO OPTIMIZING FEMALE HORMONES AND EMPOWERING WOMEN’S HEALTH
What happened to your sexual health, your favorite body, or your ability to remember why you walked into the next room? These are questions I commonly hear from women. Our hormones impact everything! Everything? Blood sugar, blood pressure, metabolism, sleep, fertility, skin, hair, memory, mood, muscle mass, and more.
Often, our hormones start to decline in our early 30s, causing us to feel less like ourselves. No, thank you!
“It’s easy to overcomplicate health, but I believe health and happy hormones are in the basics. It’s not what you do once in a while that matters; it’s what you do most of the time that makes all the difference!”
What can you do to optimize your hormones as you age? As an expert in helping people find balance, here are my non-negotiables:
• Prioritize sleep
• Get morning sunlight
• Manage stress
• Lift weights
• Walk daily
• Get adequate protein
• Spend time with people you love
Sleep needs to be a priority because that’s when our bodies regenerate. A lack of sleep often equals suboptimal hormone production. Similarly, sunlight exposure in the first two hours of the day sets our circadian rhythm, which tells our hormones when to do what they’re supposed to do.
Stress will crush your hormones. Remove the stressors that you can, and find ways to mitigate stress that you cannot control. Meanwhile, lifting weights boosts hormone production because muscle is a hormone-signaling organ. Body fat, however, increases inflammation and lowers our ability to bind to hormones.
Go for a walk every day . Walking is one of the most underrated ways to help your health. It increases metabolism, helps lower inflammation, and improves lymphatic system function. For my favorite two-for-one boost, you can walk first thing in the morning to get moving and get early sunlight exposure.
When you get adequate protein, you can build lean muscle mass, making it easier for your body to make and utilize hormones. Reserves of amino acids (proteins) are needed to build muscle and create hormones and neurotransmitters.
How does spending time with people you love impact your hormones? Research has repeatedly shown that it helps lower stress, increases your mood, and is even related to extending your life.
If you want additional help balancing your hormones, consider bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. The treatment isn’t indicated for everyone, but it can be highly beneficial for some women.

Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday – give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside.
Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!
• 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet
• spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional)
• 6” bowl (cereal bowl size)
• floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch)
• 12” square cut chicken wire
• wire cutters
• garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire
• clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do)
• lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional)
• First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-floral elements used to assemble a floral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the flowers are built into to hold each stem in its place.
• Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl.
• Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later.
• Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one.
• Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens.

LOCAL LEADER (AND PAGEANT QUEEN!) STEELY LOTT TAKES US ON A TOUR OF HER FAVE FINDS FOR THIS SPRING AND SUMMER.
““My personal style is whatever makes me happy and lets me express myself… as everyone’s style should be.”
We’re in Texas, so I always grab light, flowy materials with that oversized or “boyfriend” fit because nobody wants to wear a heavy material that adds to the heat. I’m seeing a lot of pastel colors—powder blue, baby pink, soft yellows, lavender—which work great for the spring and summer months. I’m also loving this “Soft-Girl” style that includes florals, ruffles, bows, lace… anything very feminine.
The J. Forks look was easy to assemble because I love a boyfriend jeans-and-top combo. I’m drawn to anything in the teal/green family, so this top immediately caught my eye. It’s lightweight, airy, and cool, and it’s a “boyfriend” fit that looks great on any body type.
Everyone needs a good little black dress and a little white dress, so I know this piece at The Pearl Antler would be perfect for church, graduation parties, sorority recruitment, and brunch with friends. The possibilities are endless, and the floral detailing goes to that “Soft-Girl” style I love.
Steely is the Director of Marketing and Events for The Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce. A lifelong Hill Country resident, she grew up on a goat farm in Comfort and graduated from UTSA. She’s always had a love for style but that took off while managing a boutique in Boerne. Steely loves her friends, family, and goats, and spends her time baking, golfing, competing in pageants, and—of course—shopping!
The midi length of this dress from Hey Love seriously works for all body types. I’m drawn to this elastic, fitted bodice because it’s comfortable and looks good all day. You can style this dress so differently depending on your mood: heels, plain sandals, stylish sneakers, you name it!
