A lot of people think of spring as the season of new beginnings. As a former teacher, this time of year has always carried that same energy. There’s something special about the start of a new school year: fresh supplies, new outfits, and those backto-school haircuts. It’s a season of new routines that are not always easy—growing independence, and big changes for so many families.

I always looked forward to meeting my new class. There was something magical about that first day. There was a mix of nerves and excitement on everyone’s faces. I loved watching students discover new things, gain confidence, and surprise themselves with what they could achieve. That feeling of fresh starts and endless possibilities has never really left me. While Austin and I currently don’t have children, we do have a little pup who is very much like our child. He fills our home with laughter, keeps us on our toes, and reminds us daily of the love and companionship pets bring into our lives.

In this issue, we’re celebrating two of life’s greatest joys—kids and pets. Whether it’s the unconditional love of a loyal dog, the curiosity of a child, or the beautiful chaos that comes when those two worlds collide, this month is all about the little ones. That includes those who still think they’re little—and the ones we wish would slow down and stop growing up so fast—each bringing so much heart into our homes.

One thing children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

Wishing you a season full of wagging tails, happy hugs, and back-to-school magic.

WHERE LEARNING meets joy

A Blue Springs preschool built on heart, curriculum, character and community for every child

Preschool class lining up after an activity-filled morning.

Discovering in the making space by building, creating, and exploring new ideas.

When Doug and Nicole Markussen first considered opening a preschool, they weren’t looking to become entrepreneurs — they were looking for a place where their own children could thrive. As Blue Springs residents and parents of three young kids (with a fourth on the way), they wanted a nurturing, structured environment that felt like an extension of home.

When the opportunity to open a franchise of The Learning Experience (TLE) nearby emerged, it felt like more than good timing — it felt like purpose.

“I grew up just a mile from here,” Doug says. “We love this community. We saw the difference early education made for our oldest, and we wanted to bring something new to Blue Springs — something that put kids at the center of everything.”

The Learning Experience is bright and welcoming, but it’s also thoughtfully designed with children in mind. Every mural, mascot and color choice reflects the joyful energy of early learning. But what truly sets it apart is the blend of play-based curriculum and intentional character development.

“We teach kids their ABCs and 123s, of course,” Doug explains. “But we also teach them manners, kindness, how to be part of a community.” Characters like Penny Polite and Grace and Charity guide themed lessons that focus on values as well as skills — from reading to yoga to philanthropy.

In just a few months since opening, the Markussens have seen measurable growth in their students — and their own kids. “My middle daughter was so into story time the other day, she didn’t even notice that I had walked into the room,” Doug laughs. “They love it here. We all do.”

Though part of a national franchise, each TLE location is locally owned and operated. For the Markussens, that means investing deeply in their team and culture.

With more than 15 teachers and staff — many of whom started on day one — the school runs on collaboration and shared purpose. “We’ve got a teacher who’s diving into sentence structure with the preschoolers,” Doug says. “Another who ensures every baby is held, soothed and supported. It’s all very intentional.”

And families take notice. One parent drops off Starbucks every week in gratitude. Another says TLE gave their child a sense of safety and stability during a difficult time.

“This place is so much more than childcare,” Doug says. “We see it in the kids every day — their confidence, their curiosity, their growth.”

Safety is also a core focus. From secure entry systems to classroom cameras and age-appropriate playgrounds, every part of the building supports a safe, enriching experience. Families stay informed with daily journals and classroom updates.

The curriculum combines academics with enrichment like sign language, Mandarin and cultural activities — all included in tuition. “It’s about helping kids love learning early,” Doug says. “And making it fun and meaningful.”

For Doug and Nicole, it all comes back to building a better future — not just for their kids, but for the community they call home.

Empowering Dogs. Supporting Owners. Strengthening Bonds.

PERSONALIZED GUIDANCE THAT BUILDS LASTING BONDS, CONFIDENT DOGS, AND EMPOWERED OWNERS

Chuck Klingsick never expected to change careers—or find a new calling. After working in the IT industry for 30 years, a series of health issues prompted him to reevaluate his priorities. Stepping away from his longtime career to focus on his well-being, Chuck found himself searching for a new path—one that would bring purpose, fulfillment, and a fresh start.

What he found wasn’t just a new job—it was a calling. That calling soon evolved into a passion for helping others experience meaningful change in in their own lives.

Today, Chuck leads with passion and empathy as the owner and a trainer at Dog Training Elite Kansas City, helping both dogs and their owners build better communication, stronger bonds, and lasting results through personalized training.

TAILORED TRAINING THAT BUILDS TRUST

What sets Dog Training Elite KC apart? It’s not just about getting your dog to sit or stay—it’s about building a lasting relationship based on trust. “We offer a balanced training approach, paired with classical conditioning that goes beyond the basics,” Chuck shares. “Whether it’s excessive barking, jumping on guests, or leash pulling, our method focuses on real-life scenarios and teaches both dog and handler how to respond confidently and calmly.”

Every training journey begins with a free in-home consultation, where a trainer works one-on-one with your dog to ensure they understand foundational commands and expectations. Once the dog is comfortable, the owner joins the process to help strengthen communication and build a solid foundation.

CONTINUED >

“One-on-one sessions are ideal for addressing specific challenges,” Chuck explains. “It’s a more personalized experience where we tailor each session to your dog’s needs and your goals as an owner.”

This individualized approach lays the groundwork for continued progress and success in group classes, where distractions, new environments, and other dogs reinforce obedience through real-world practice.

GROUP CLASSES WITH A PURPOSE

Once dogs complete their initial obedience training, dogs can transition into ongoing group classes designed to build confidence and maintain skills. These sessions are structured yet engaging, offering a mix of foundational exercises and creative games like Red Light, Green Light, Simon Says, or even pack walks through the neighborhood.

Group training is about having fun and teaching dogs how to behave around other dogs—no matter the energy level, distraction, or environment. “Socialization sometimes means interacting with other dogs,” Chuck explains, “but more importantly, it means teaching them to stay calm, focused, and well-mannered around others. The goal is composure, confidence, and learning to navigate real-life situations.”

THERAPY & SERVICE TRAINING THAT CHANGES LIVES

Dog Training Elite KC also specializes in therapy and service training, helping dogs take on meaningful roles in people’s lives. Service dogs are trained to support individuals with disabilities by staying focused and tuned in to their handler’s needs, tuning out distractions, and responding when it matters most.

Therapy dogs bring comfort to people in hospitals, schools, fire stations, and counseling centers. They are trained to be calm, well-mannered, and confident in new environments, making a powerful impact wherever they go.

TRAINING THAT ADAPTS TO FAMILY LIFE

Dog Training Elite KC understands the demands of modern family life. That’s why they offer flexible scheduling, with appointments available as early as 9 a.m. and as late as 7 p.m. Clients are matched with a trainer based on availability, and sessions can be adjusted around vacations, illness, or busy schedules. “Life happens,” Chuck says. “We’re here to support our clients every step of the way.”

MORE THAN OBEDIENCE— IT’S A LIFELONG PARTNERSHIP

One of the biggest transformations Chuck sees in dogs is confidence. “Once dogs understand what’s being asked of them, they start showing up differently,” he says. “They’re calmer, more focused, and you can tell they’re proud of themselves.”

The same can be said for owners. With expert guidance, practical tools, and a supportive training program, families can build peaceful, structured homes where dogs are more than pets— they’re well-behaved, trusted companions. “We’ve had so many clients tell us they’ve built a stronger bond with their dog—and that they feel like they’re being trained too, so they can help their dog succeed,” Chuck proudly shared.

Dog Training Elite KC doesn’t just train dogs—they transform lives. Whether your goal is basic obedience, preparing for public service, or a stronger connection with your furry companion, Chuck and his team are committed to helping you every step of the way.

A LITERARY WONDERLAND THAT’S REDEFINING HOW KIDS (AND GROWN-UPS) EXPERIENCE STORYTELLING

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

“IT’S

While childhood can have memories of family vacations, an obsessively-watched cartoon or a favorite toy opened on Christmas morning, there’s something uniquely transporting about opening a book you read as a kid. Children’s books are

literature. Inside, museum-goers will find exhibits for beloved characters including Curious George, Madeline, Frog & Toad and Babar the elephant, and can step into the familiar spaces such as the kitchen from “Blueberries for Sal” or the green great room from

OUR MISSION TO INSPIRE THE READING LIVES OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS.”

enjoyed over and over, and remind us of times in our childhood bedrooms, sitting on an adult’s lap and the coziness of that time of focus and quietude that seems reserved only for reading time, especially in the loud, rambunctious days of childhood.

That’s why The Rabbit hOle, located in North Kansas City, an immersive museum for children’s literature, is so special. It brings the characters, colors and the feeling of reading as a child to life, taking two-dimensional stories and turning them into interactive, art-filled exhibits that are anything but static.

The Rabbit hOle is a project years in the making, started by married couple Deb Pettid and Pete Cowdin, who originally owned the Reading Reptile bookstore in Kansas City. The two, who also raised five children, set out to make the nation’s only immersive museum for children’s literature in 2016.

The museum has secured rights and permissions to over 70 works from the last century of children’s

“Goodnight Moon.” They will also be introduced to lesser-known settings, such as the cliffs from “My Father’s Dragon,” or the Harlem-based bookshop from the works of late author John Steptoe, created in collaboration with his children. The museum has worked closely with the authors and illustrators and their estates, explaining their unique educational project and gaining the rights to bring these books to life.

The Rabbit hOle is located in one of North Kansas City’s many industrial areas, in a four-story 150,000 square foot building. While many cultural institutions choose to situate south of the river or in Johnson County, Rabbit hOle development and grant manager Emily Hane says that the city of North Kansas City has been instrumental in getting the museum going and is especially supportive.

“North Kansas City is certainly having a renaissance,” says Emily. “This is a project that — I don’t know that it could have happened in any other place.”

CONTINUED >

She says she loves the museum’s location, joking that the nearby train tracks are an extra attraction for young children. You can see the neon rabbits atop the building from the interstate and it’s close to most pockets of Kansas City.

“You always want to have an artistic anchor in a community and The Rabbit hOle gets to kind of provide that for the Northland,” says Emily. “All the kids who come through [for] school field trips, our goal is that they leave wanting to read a book. But there’s lots of kids who leave who are like, ‘Oh I want to build a giant tiger statue when I grow up.’  It’s going to help inspire artists, too, which I think it’s really cool.”

While so many programs for children focus on children’s literacy and the ability to read, Emily says that not many programs serve to solely foster the love of reading.

“It’s our mission to inspire the reading lives of children and adults,” says Emily. “We want to be a place where kids can really discover the types of stories that they like that they’ve maybe never been exposed to before — whether it’s because they’ve never seen a picture book with a kid who looks like them, or heard cultural stories that might resonate with their own household.”

Behind the robust and imaginative construction of the museum’s exhibits is a staff of two dozen fabricators, all with different specialties and backgrounds.

“WE BELIEVE THAT KIDS DESERVE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.”

The book exhibits a range from animated shadow boxes to larger-than-life mechanized sculptures. The exhibit’s makers studied the original books carefully, paying close attention to colors, lines and illustration styles, making models of the exhibits before painstakingly bringing them to life with wood, metal, foam, concrete, paint and more.

All of the fabricators have remained on staff since the museum opened, as The Rabbit hOle continues to add exhibits to all four floors of the building.

One of these fabricators and artists is Kelli Harrod, who has a background in theater design. I witnessed her a month before the museum opened, painting scenes from Shel Silverstein’s “Where the Sidewalk Ends.”

She said one of the hardest challenges of bringing the books to life is taking a two-dimensional page and transforming it into a three-dimensional object. There are some sides of characters or rooms — like the wall behind the point of view in the great green room from “Goodnight Moon” — that you never see in the books. So the fabricators derive inspiration from the author or illustrator’s real life to complete the scenes.

Above all, though, Kelli says her favorite part about the work is how much joy it brings her.

“I get to show up and have fun every day,” says Kelli.

On top of the immersive exhibits inside The Rabbit hOle, the museum features a bookstore with a space for author talks, a “Tons of Fun” room for making literacy-based arts and crafts, a resource library for scholars and educators, a rotating exhibit space, a more traditional white wall museum gallery, and a story lab and print shop, with spaces for writing activities and residencies for authors and illustrators.

Emily says that the museum, overall, is a rare place that celebrates the culture of children. The Rabbit hOle takes special care in making something interactive and artistic, drawing inspiration from the St. Louis’s City Museum. The exhibits are built to withstand the enjoyment of children while still being interactive and imaginative so all generations can enjoy the displays.

“Whenever you’re talking about children’s culture, there is this [idea of], ‘Oh, it’s good enough. It’s for kids, you know, just make it cheap. They don’t really deserve anything beautiful,’” says Emily. “And that’s the exact opposite of how The Rabbit hOle feels. We believe that kids deserve something beautiful. Yeah, it’s going to be durable. Yeah, we’re going to be able to sterilize it and clean it and everything. But just because it’s for children, doesn’t mean it is a lesser art form.”

BAGS THAT change LIVES

For many kids, sports offer more than just fun—they build confidence, teach teamwork, and open doors to opportunity. But for underprivileged youth, the cost of equipment can be a major barrier. That’s where Build A Bag Foundation steps in.

Brooklynne Simbeck, a former standout college pitcher and seasoned pitching coach, founded Build A Bag Foundation, a Kansas City-based nonprofit dedicated to helping young athletes chase their dreams. It started with sharing extra gear with friends—but that small act quickly grew into a bigger mission: ensuring no child is left on the sidelines due to lack of equipment.

In 2024, Build A Bag supported over 100 families, providing everything from sports bags and cleats to hygiene products and learning materials. Their impact is personal, like helping 9-yearold Nathan, a young catcher, receive a full set of gear and a sense of belonging, through their Adopt An Athlete holiday program.

Now, the foundation is looking to continue growing, with plans to introduce free camps, clinics, and additional youth programs. With a goal of helping over 200 families this year, community support is more important than ever.

You can support Build A Bag Foundation by donating new or gently used sports equipment, giving online at buildabagkc.org , or adopting an athlete through their annual holiday program. Every donation helps a young athlete gear up, grow in confidence, and chase their dreams.
