I have been using A+ Cleaning for a little over 5 months and have been blown away by the service. Every detail is accounted for! Of course, I expected everything to be cleaned, but the fact that they fold every blanket, every towel and all the special little touches like folding the toilet paper is a level of service I wasn't expecting. MEETMARCUS LEGRAND
STEPPING UP FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
ARTICLE BY LYNETTE CONFER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NATALIE STEPHENSON
Marcus LeGrand, educator, father, husband, son, networker, community organizer. Tin Pan Alley, downtown Bend.
"... people inherently possess agency –the right to have a voice and make choices... "
In a world often driven by quick answers and surface-level understanding, a local educator stands apart – an unwavering advocate for curiosity, self-inquiry, and critical thought. More than just an educator, Marcus LeGrand acts as a catalyst for transformation, challenging those he mentors to dig deeper, question more, and engage the world with open minds and resilient spirits. He inspires those around him to discover their own agency, recognizing it as both a powerful tool and a pathway toward shaping their lives with intention and purpose.
A meaningful education goes beyond academics – it cultivates true knowledge, nurtures self-worth and lays the foundation for personal agency. As LeGrand sees it, one of his deepest callings is to walk
alongside his students and fellow community members, helping them discover their own agency – the quiet power to shape not only their own futures, but also the world around them. Essentially, ‘agency’ is about empowerment: a sense of control over one’s circumstances and the freedom to make purposeful choices with intention and clarity.
LeGrand is deeply passionate about learning, viewing the pursuit of knowledge as a bridge between the past and a brighter future. He often responds to questions with questions of his own, challenging others to think critically, seek understanding, and step out of their comfort zones. “There’s a difference between information and knowledge. Information is being thrown at us daily, but I want to
encourage people to look beyond what you are told, take a deep dive, investigate, and study a topic three times over before you start talking about it,” LeGrand emphasizes. “I think this is one of the most critical pieces for students and their families, for all of us.”
“We must also return to the understanding that people inherently possess agency – the right to have a voice and make choices and shape their own lives,” states LeGrand. But, agency isn’t just something granted; people must choose it. “We need to allow grace and understanding for everyone, and the space to simply be human. That is all I want for my students, for everyone.”
Indeed, as a father, LeGrand believes allowing his own children to have agency over their lives is essential. “I want them to have the freedom to engage without being stressed, harassed, and I want them to be able to use their skills and abilities to create impactful change.”
“Our youth are more in tune with what is going on in the world than we realize,” LeGrand states. “And, if we listen to them, they can help build what is necessary in our communities. For our kids to have a voice and a choice, we need to build systems for them. Things are always shifting and changing, we must do the same.”
A resident of Central Oregon for ten years, LeGrand grew up in Badin, North Carolina. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing, later earning a master’s degree in counseling and psychotherapy from Rowan University. LeGrand and his wife, a local OB/GYN, planned to retire in the Pacific Northwest, but made a decision to move up that timeline. “When our kids were five and three, we just decided it was the right time to make the move and relocated to Central Oregon,” states LeGrand. “Now they are 15 and 13, so that gives you a little insight to where we are right now… our kids have pretty much grown up here, this is our home base.”
One thing LeGrand loves about Bend is that so many people move here intentionally to get away from larger metro areas. “People move here to find peace of mind, so we are surrounded by people who are looking for grace and peace.”
Growing up with the support and encouragement of a large extended family, LeGrand acknowledges the advantage that afforded him. “I grew up in an activist, religious, entrepreneurial household,” he shares. “Finding creative ways to bring resources in was probably the number one thing I learned. We were taught respect, a strong work ethic, how to learn, but also how to apply that knowledge. We were taught to work hard and smart, but also how to observe how all things are connected. And, we were taught our worth.”
LeGrand is the Afrocentric Program Coordinator and a part-time instructor at Central Oregon Community College (COCC). He is a Bend La Pine School District Board Member and Chair of the Board, as well as a co-founder and legacy member of The Father’s Group in Bend. He also works as a consultant with elected officials and business leaders across the country on equitable practices. Additionally, he can be found offering assistance for events that bring the community together.
“I think my major professional role is networker and community organizer,” LeGrand remarks. “I’m an educator all day long, but I don’t give myself labels, I’m just not big on that. If you see me wearing different hats, I’m still just doing one thing – I am trying to make sure people have the right information to make decisions so that they can have agency within themselves and their lives. That’s my primary job.”
When it comes to the question of diversity, LeGrand says that wherever there is diversity, there is potential for deep connection. He believes that rather than seeing diversity as a divide or collection of ‘others,’ it should be recognized as a gathering of people, each
"We all long for connection and when we seek that and build community, we are stronger together."
striving to get things right, together. “When you have more diverse ideas, you have more diverse solutions,” LeGrand states. In this way, diversity becomes a foundation, not a fracture, for a stronger, more unified community.
“My responsibility as I’ve gotten older is to give all the information I have to my students. To help them find their passion, figure out where they are going and how to get there,” reflects LeGrand. “That way, no matter the community they find themselves in, they feel empowered to exercise their freedom of choice, voice and feel like they are part of society. I want them to recognize that they have the skills to be able to create their future. They just must dig in and do the work.”
For those who want to make a difference – whether with youth or in any part of their community – LeGrand encourages starting by finding organizations already doing the work. “Ask how your skills can support their mission,” he says. “Don’t enter with a ‘know-it-all’ attitude, but rather as a true advocate. The first step toward real change is listening – then rolling up your sleeves and getting to work.”
“Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone,” LeGrand emphasizes. Connection, he believes, is the key to change. “Isolation is detrimental to moving forward and moving on. We all long for connection and when we seek that and build community, we are stronger together.”

Life in Pictures
A Legacy of Everlasting Love Letters
Through the Camera Lens
Bend Lifestyle magazine remembers Gary Calicott, who passed away on March 26, 2025. Calicott was a frequent photographer for the magazine and, beyond that, he photographed some of the most iconic spaces in Oregon and around the world. His ability to capture musicians at the right moment during concerts was uncanny and his images of wide-open spaces and starscapes were his love letters to the earth and the night sky.
Donna Burklo, Calicott’s wife, says, “With photography, he would scope out locations and map the stars, the sunrises, and the sunsets. He often made a point of leaving the camera behind so that he could just enjoy the vistas he would travel so far to see.”
Born in Springfield, Oregon in 1964, Calicott had an early career in the automotive industry in Eugene and Portland. Calicott moved to Bend in 1999. Being an avid fly fisherman, backpacker, and mountain biker – Central Oregon was the perfect place for him to work and live. His friends will say that, “Gary knew all the right spots to go.”
Besides loving vintage cars and the outdoors, his passion and talent were in photography. Calicott made a name for himself shooting weddings, events, sports, concerts, portraits, real estate and of course, the great outdoors. In every photo he took, it was evident that he had a keen
eye for detail and saw the beauty in every person, place, or thing he shot. While his work kept Calicott busy, he always made time to slow down and enjoy his time camping, fishing, and hiking with friends and family.
After being diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, Calicott was no longer able to work full time, and this is where his next journey began. With Burklo by his side, the two planned the ultimate travel and photography bucket list.
It was always important to Calicott that Oregon came first and with his photography of the high desert, Cascade mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, and vegetation – his lasting images are a dedication to the state he loved so much. Calicott and Burklo intertwined their travels to the four corners of Oregon, along with trips to national parks, Maui, Alaska, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, Patagonia, a month-long immersion in the Western states of the U.S., and England, where he and Burklo attended a Liverpool match and visited Abbey Road. He got to drive a Lamborghini Huracan, rode in an acrobatic stunt plane and a souped-up private jet. Every precious moment was captured, every monument, every wide-open space or landmark photographed in real time for the community to share and remember Calicott and the legacy he left behind for those he knew and loved.

LOCAL LEGACY
After Calicott’s passing, dedications, music and photos were shared on social media and at his Celebration of Life. It was clear that Calicott had a strong connection with his family, friends, local musicians, his clients, and the Central Oregon community.
People shared images he took of them, of himself and the isolated spaces where he found raw, breathtaking beauty. Calicott’s photography is in homes and spaces everywhere. Musicians and clients have lasting photos for the promotion of their craft or business. Families have captured memories and
the protected spaces that Calicott loved so much, all preserved in each photo he took.
“Gary had an impossibly difficult section of his life that nearly resigned him to merely just existing, yet somewhere along the line he let love in and then after a terminal cancer diagnosis, chose to live life beyond any of the hopes or dreams he may have had in the past. He would love nothing more than to know he's inspired others to do the same,” says Burklo.
Thank you, Gary, for everything you did for the community, for every moment, person and landscape you captured, for everything you touched and the legacy of beauty you left for us all.

SIPS COCKTAIL CATERING
CUSTOM SIGNATURE COCKTAILS AND MOBILE CATERING FOR MEMORABLE EVENTS
ARTICLE BY JULIE E. FURNAS
It's been said that if you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. For Ryan Johnson, owner and operator of Sips Cocktail Catering, mixing the perfect drink for people is ‘getting paid to have fun!’ Putting together the perfect signature cocktail for a bride and groom, a corporate holiday party or a fundraiser is what drives Johnson to do what he does. “Creating a unique drink for guests at a themed party is my favorite part of what I do,” says Johnson.

“It never gets old.”
Even after more than a decade, mobile cocktail catering is still considered a newer concept when it comes to planning an event and Johnson has done his best to adapt to the strict permit policies, cost fluctuations and the ever-changing consumer demands. “Mobile bars still have to jump through a lot of hoops to be able to serve alcohol in public places,” explains Johnson. “Every time I think I’ve figured it out, a new protocol comes about.” Every event is different, every wedding unique, every gathering and location has its own regulations when it comes to serving alcohol. “Once everything is in place, the fun can begin!” he adds.
Johnson has been in Bend since he was ten years old and has watched the craft beer and hard liquor industries go through many changes. He’s also seen how difficult it can be for restaurants and bars to survive in the Central Oregon economy. Getting his corporate training at Olive Garden and a stint in fine dining, Johnson preferred catering over anything else and started cocktailing for the masses at small private events, weddings, and large fundraisers.
After the pandemic, Johnson decided to start his own cocktail catering company. With the knowledge and mentorship he had gained, his mission was simple: Bring the bars to the space and mix excellent quality drinks with fresh ingredients for any theme and every type of audience.
Johnson also prides himself on suggesting good, local beer and wines that fit the theme, season and client’s preference. With beautiful venues and landscapes, Central Oregon is considered a ‘destination’ for weddings and events of any size. Though the number of events might fluctuate with the economy, late spring through early fall is generally a busy time for outdoor events.
“Creating a unique drink for guests at a themed party is my favorite part of what I do."
— RYAN JOHNSON, OWNER, SIPS COCKTAIL CATERING
“I work alongside a close community of vendors who have all worked very hard to get where they are,” Johnson notes. “We all have the same objective – to make these events a success.” The summer season is Johnson’s favorite time of year because he enjoys suggesting cocktails with fresh ingredients like watermelon and pineapple mixed with rum, vodka, gin, and tequila. During the holidays, Johnson recommends whiskey and bourbon cocktails like Old Fashions and hot drinks like Hot Buttered Rum or Spanish Coffees.

SIPS’ TIPS FOR PLANNING THE PERFECT EVENT:
• When picking out beer and wine, support local Oregon breweries and wineries and if you’re serving an IPA, make sure to balance that with a light beer offering as well.
• Select beverages that all your guests will enjoy – everyone likes something different to drink!
• Fresh ingredients, like purees and lime juice are best prepared the morning of the event.
• Always consider a batch cocktail that’s easy to serve so that your guests aren’t waiting in a long line for a drink.
• Always provide a delicious and unique mocktail for those who don’t drink alcohol.
• Every event should have a water and lemonade station and should be in a place that is easily accessible.
• Late night events should include a coffee and hot chocolate bar to keep the party going.

JUICING
There is a common fear that juicing is full of sugar and lacks fiber, but juicing can be seen as a supplement, providing dense nutrients without the need for the body to break down fiber. The benefits to juicing are far reaching, from improved digestive health to better sleep, more energy and glowing, clear skin.
IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION
Hydration is a simple way to support overall health. A good rule of thumb, according to the National Council on Aging, is to take one-third of your body’s weight and drink that number of ounces in fluids. Health benefits include improved brain performance, better digestion, more energy, kidney stone prevention and better heart health, to name a few.
LIVING FOOD DIET AND PROTEIN
Eating living foods, raw or food in its most natural state, helps prevent disease and maintain health. These foods contain vital life force nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids and oxygen, as well as enzymes. High quality protein from sources like fish, chicken breast, eggs, quinoa, lentils and Greek yogurt are also important for energy, building muscle and strength.
GET REGULAR EXERCISE
According to the American Heart Association, men aged 30-50 should get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic activity, plus muscle-strengthening activity two days per week. Regular weekly exercise can lower cholesterol, improve circulation and decrease joint pain, along with lowering the risk of heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure.
SLEEP AND HORMONAL HEALTH
Quality sleep is vital for physical recovery and mental and emotional health. Sleep is essential for healthy testosterone and cortisol levels, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association . The average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Less than this can lead to far-reaching health issues, including cognitive issues later in life.
LAUGH AND HAVE FUN
According to sources, including the Mayo Clinic, laughter truly is one of the best medicines. Laughter can stimulate organs, release tension, relieve stress response, relieve pain, improve the immune system, boost emotional and mental health and so much more. So, take a break, go to a comedy club or find other outlets that allow you time for laughter and fun.
SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY
DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA
Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.”
Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life. So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime. Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estate-land, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO
To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape— and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.
WHERE TO STAY
Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-square-feet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent— ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).
For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.
Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-ofthe-art accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-em-from-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.
HOW
TO GET HERE
Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.

Enjoy a movie night together with popcorn, candy and all the fixings. Home movies enable strolls down memory lane, or one of his favorite movies from his childhood makes for fun conversation. Ordering a projector for a large format screening makes the movie night feel extra theatrical.
