I have been using A+ Cleaning for a little over 5 months and have been blown away by the service. Every detail is accounted for! Of course, I expected everything to be cleaned, but the fact that they fold every blanket, every towel and all the special little touches like folding the toilet paper is a level of service I wasn't expecting. My house smells amazing after every clean and it always brightens my day as soon as I walk through the door. I also just recently signed up for their laundry service! Time to Explore

On a recent getaway to California, I was able to explore Joshua Tree National Park, something I’ve always wanted to do. Although our visit in the park was cut short due to high winds and a fire (!), it left me wanting to return when I could soak up more time in this peaceful place.

Living here in the High Desert, we have so many beautiful places to explore within minutes, or just a few hours away. Now that summer has finally arrived, it’s time to pack up the car or RV, jump on a bike, boat, SUP or inner tube and enjoy our next adventures. And if it all goes right, it will leave you wanting to do it all over again.

This summer, I hope you can find time to soak up the short season we have to play in the warm sun.  Here’s to a fun and adventurous summer!

Beaver Coach Named One of Top Five RV Dealerships in North America

A Home on the Road to Explore New Places

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

(l to r) Ryan Kelly, General Sales Manager for Beaver Coach Sales and his father, Ty Kelly, owner of Beaver Coach Sales.

A competitive skater growing up, Ty Kelly traveled from event to event in a travel trailer. Today, he is the owner, along with his wife Jodie, of Beaver Coach Sales in Bend. Last year Beaver Coach Sales was named one of North America’s top five Blue Ribbon RV dealerships.

“We’ve been in the top 50 for six or seven years and that was a big deal,” he says. “Being in the top five is the most coveted spot and it’s been a goal of ours for years.”

This designation is not only based on the number of units sold, but also on how a company treats its employees, its overall culture and mission, service training, and philanthropy. Beaver Coach Sales scores high on every single category.

Employees are highly valued and recognized for their hard work and customer service. In fact, they’ve had multiple family members and friends become part of the team after employees shared their enthusiasm for the atmosphere. The team also includes a handful of

customers who later became employees due to their experiences at the dealership.

When it comes to service, there’s a highly qualified and certified service manager on board who can train and certify others. And, if a customer needs maintenance or repair, they are a one-stop shop.

mission is clear — to provide opportunities for adventure and enrich the lives of others.”

“Our employees really care about what they do,” says Ty. “For example, it’ll be a Friday night, and I’m trying to lock up when I see the three techs, the walk-through coordinator, and the sales guy still working because one of our customers wants to hit the road, but they had an inverter problem. Our guys will volunteer to stay to make that happen.”

The company’s most significant focus is always on its customers. “Our mission is clear — to provide opportunities for adventure and enrich the lives of others,” says

Ryan Kelly, Ty’s son and general sales manager who grew up to love the RV lifestyle as much as his parents.

“Our goal isn’t necessarily to sell the greatest number of RVs, but to sell the best RVs and create the best experience for customers. Oregon, all of the United States, are so beautiful, and there are so many incredible places to travel to and explore. We want to provide the best vehicle for people to get out there, play, and have fun.”

So, what are the biggest advantages of traveling by RV? “For the most part, people love having their own beds, their own bathrooms and their own refrigerators with all of their stuff,” says Ty. “Another advantage is that you can take your time seeing places around the country. What I love the most is that, no matter where you are, and whether you’re in a luxury RV park, a Walmart parking lot, or a rest area along the highway, when you wake up in the morning, you have to look out the window to remember where you are. It’s an adventure.”

Many of their customers are on their fifth and sixth RV, but for someone who isn’t sure the RV lifestyle is for them, or who doesn’t have a place to park one, there are plenty of rental options. “We have people that rent

multiple times a year, every year, and then all of a sudden they decide they want to buy one,” says Ryan. Employees are also encouraged to rent them and enjoy being out on the road.

Ty and his wife still love to travel all over the country, and sometimes they meet up with their customers. “We try to do at least one trip a year and sometimes we do multiple trips to RV shows, or what we call rallies.”

Philanthropy is another huge focus of the dealership and its entire team. “Almost every one of our philanthropies comes from employees telling us about something they’re passionate about. These usually revolve around kids, and sometimes pets.”

Being the title sponsor of the Boys and Girls Club annual banquet is one way they give back, along with being one of the top sponsors for Ghost Tree Invitational, an annual golf tournament that benefits local charity organizations. “We have foursomes that play in the golf tournament and it’s a lot of fun,” says Ty. “We’re also very involved with FFA [Future Farmers of America]. It’s cool to give to organizations that you know are making a direct impact on the next generation of young leaders.”

MOTORCYCLE MUSINGS

REFLECTIONS ON LIFE LESSONS LEARNED THROUGH A MOTORCYCLE'S RESTORATION

With such a low asking price, the owner got dozens of offers. Many for more cash than he was even asking. So, I sent him a message saying I have cash and a trailer . . . and I want it! Just a few hours later, I set off on my lunch break with a truck and trailer to make this happen.

I got it back home in one piece after securing it with admittedly a few too many tie-downs and a solid ‘that’s not going anywhere’ slap. It was overkill, sure, especially for a bike this small. But where others saw junk, I saw something more of a reflection of myself in its pitted chrome, weathered yet full of potential.

Sometimes, growth looks like a half-disassembled motorcycle sitting in my garage. It’s scratched, dented, weathered, and imperfect, but so am I. And maybe that’s why I see so much of myself in this little 1986 Suzuki Savage, a single-cylinder street bike that’s smaller than what I’m used to but full of potential.

I didn’t buy this bike because I needed it. I bought it because I needed something. Something to teach me patience, intention, and the value of effort. Something to remind me that even when things feel like they’ve fallen apart, there’s still a way to put them back together, piece by piece.

I found the bike listed for only $100. It had clearly seen better days and it’s hard to believe it was new at one point, but something about it called to me.

The first step was straightforward, removing the seat and gas tank to expose the frame of the bike. From there, I stripped it down to nothing but the engine and wheels, transforming a fully assembled machine into a puzzle of parts, like a set of adult Legos waiting to be cleaned and reassembled. I never second-guessed myself. Every setback was just another challenge to solve, and I knew I’d figure it out.

This bike isn’t perfect. Its flaws are visible from every angle, etched into its body by years of use and neglect. But I don’t see its imperfections as flaws. I see them as the marks of its story, every dent and scratch a chapter that brought it to me. If it were flawless, it wouldn’t have traded hands to where it is now. It wouldn’t have this opportunity to become something more.

And I hope someday someone sees me the same way. I hope they look at my weathered edges, my messy past, and see the potential for growth and renewal. But for now, I’m not there yet.

Orion Tupper near Tumalo, Oregon.

I’m still learning to see myself the way I see this bike: not as a sum of its broken parts but as a whole, with all the beauty that comes from wear and tear.

That’s why I decided to pull the engine. It was a big step, maybe even a risky one, but with the leaks and finish issues, I knew it was the only way to do the job right. I lifted it from the frame, stripped it down to bare metal, sanded away any rust and imperfections, then resealed, repainted, and reinstalled it, ensuring it was as strong and refined as it should be.

With the engine reinstalled, and a few preventative issues addressed (the top end is notorious for oil leaks), it was time to install the new carburetor and get everything back in place. And that’s where it sits now – rebuilt, refined, and ready for whatever comes next.

This bike is more than a project, it’s a mirror. It’s teaching me to trust myself, to embrace imperfection, and to take on challenges even when they scare me. And maybe, just maybe, when it’s finally rebuilt and shining in the sunlight, I’ll see a little bit of myself in it, a reminder of what’s possible when you stop playing it safe and decide to try.

Exploring New Horizons

Daytryp Health Offers Alternative Healing Options for Often Difficult to Treat Mental and Physical Health Conditions

(l to r): Dr. Laura Meaney, DNAP, PMHPN, Daytryp Health Medical Director and Leslee Rabuchin, Daytryp Rx online sales.

In a groundbreaking shift from conventional medicine, emerging mind-expanding therapies are quietly ushering in a new class of healing practices that offer those grappling with treatment-resistant depression, chronic pain, PTSD and many other difficult diagnoses renewed hope  – opening the door to deep healing, renewed perspective and a better quality of life.

One local clinic aims to help patients explore these new modalities and support them in achieving a more balanced state of mind, as well as overall health and wellness. Soul Psychedelic Systems first opened their doors in November 2023. Founded by Dr. Laura Meaney, DNAP, PMHNP, this clinic focuses on Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) and Ketamine Infusion Therapy, combining these pioneering therapy options with “compassionate care to support profound healing and transformation.”

Dr. Meaney practiced as a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) for 21 years before obtaining her doctorate in nursing anesthesia practice (DNAP). Her focused research was in ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression. In May 2022, Dr. Meaney became a psychiatric nurse practitioner of mental health, with an emphasis on ketamine-assisted therapy (KAP).

With close to 30 years’ experience as a nurse anesthesiologist, Dr. Meaney decided during the COVID-19 pandemic to expand her area of expertise. “During that time, it was easy to see how we all became disconnected, stressed and fearful and

"Dr. Meaney is a pioneer in the ketamine field and one of the most experienced ketamine practitioners in this country."

I think many of us realized it was going to cause great psychological problems, social anxiety, depression, a bit more abusive drinking, things like that… And, I thought, ‘you know, when we’re through this, we are going to need a lot of providers.’ And, I felt compelled to go into psychiatry.”

For the past few years, she has witnessed firsthand the impact of ketamine on clients afflicted with depression, anxiety, fibromyalgia, pain, migraine and other diagnoses. “It’s my passion to share the benefits of ketamine with those suffering from pain, whether it be mental, emotional or physical,” states Dr. Meaney.

Ketamine is a Schedule III controlled non-narcotic substance in the U.S. under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). First developed in 1962, it was approved for human use in the 1970’s and widely used since then as an anesthetic to induce loss of consciousness. According to the Ketamine Research Foundation, ketamine has been granted breakthrough therapy designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine can be legally prescribed and administered nationwide by licensed practitioners for use in psychiatry, for treatment of chronic pain, alcohol use disorders and much more.

“This therapy, ketamine assisted therapy… it’s just revolutionary. A lot of times people seek out this therapy as a last resort. ‘I’ve tried everything else, my doctor wants me to try this.’ I hear this often.” But, Dr. Meaney would like to suggest something different. “Before you’ve tried everything else and all these medications are in your system, maybe they are making you sick and you have wasted time… why not give ketamine assisted therapy a try. It can be absolutely life altering.”

Recent talks with a mental health colleague in Phoenix, Arizona is opening doors for this innovative local clinic, and Soul Psychedelic Systems is excited to announce their acquisition by and merger with Daytryp Health. For Dr. Meaney, this means that she can focus on what she does best, which is handle the day-today patient care and interactions at the clinic.

Daytryp Health was founded several years ago by Chris Cohn in Phoenix, Arizona. Now co-owners of Daytryp Health in Bend, Cohn also serves as CEO of the company while Dr. Meaney serves as the medical director for the Bend clinic.

Cohn has been a mental health care entrepreneur for many years, a graduate of the University of Arizona, later attaining his master’s degree in addiction counseling from Grand Canyon University. In 2008, Cohn founded Scottsdale Recovery Center and Arizona Addiction Recover Center, two of the best-known drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in the state. In 2023, Cohn founded Daytryp Health after his own deep dive to learn more about mind-expanding therapies and how they might help people heal, recover and thrive.

Dr. Meaney was a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) for 21 years before going into psychiatry with an emphasis on ketamineassisted therapy (KAP).

“I’ve known Chris since he first founded Daytryp several years ago,” explains Dr. Meaney. “We kept in touch, and I watched him grow that business. He’s done a fabulous job. He knows how to run and build a business, he’s great at marketing. I am a practitioner, and it’s hard for me to run the business side of things. I want to concentrate on what I do best, have him do what he does best. We really complement each other.”

Cohn agrees, “Dr. Meaney is an owner and medical director for the local Daytryp Health clinic. Every ketamine clinic needs a medical director with an appropriate DEA license to operate. Dr. Meaney is a pioneer in the ketamine field and one of the most experienced ketamine practitioners in this country. It was important to me to team up with the best. So, I reached out to her and let her know I wanted to open a Daytryp clinic in Bend and we started talking. Daytryp acquiring Soul Psychedelic Systems made the most sense.”

When it comes to those she serves, Dr. Meaney explains that she often has patients referred to her with dual diagnoses from primary care physicians or other therapists. For instance, chronic pain along with depression. Someone with addiction issues might also be dealing with anxiety. She has had great success in treating chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS) with KAP. “Ketamine is a wonderful pain management tool, and something I know a

lot about with my anesthesia background,” notes Dr. Meaney. “Most patients walk away with at least a reduction in pain, if not a total cessation.”

When it comes to questions about ketamine being addictive, Dr. Meaney notes that this belief is actually a misnomer. “It’s actually anti-addictive and can help patients get off of addictive substances,” she states. “We also use it to successfully treat PTSD even in veterans, trauma and have had success using it to treat long COVID symptoms.”

“With ketamine, we are creating new neuropathways. We are, at the cellular level, changing your body, actually teaching it to do something different than what it’s doing right now,” Dr. Meaney states. “So, it’s healing you in a way that is not just medicating you or covering up symptoms like a band-aid as most pharmaceuticals do, it’s teaching your body to do it right and better. With ketamine infusions we work to elicit a response at a cellular level, and with support and continued therapy, you are learning a new way to be. It helps facilitate changes and healing very quickly. For someone who has not had success in any other way, this therapy option just gives them new hope.”

“This therapy, ketamineassisted therapy… it’s just revolutionary." — Dr. Laura Meaney, DNAP, PMHNP

The new Daytryp clinic will continue to offer KAP therapy, ketamine infusions and therapy in-person. Daytryp RX online offers telehealth options for KAP, weight loss medications, longevity medicines and much more.

As for the future of Daytryp Health in Bend, Cohn notes that they would love to expand across Oregon, maybe even across the country. Dr. Meaney says that one of the first things they plan to do is hire a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse, along with additional therapists to be able to serve a larger volume of patients. For now, look for the grand opening of Daytryp Health to take place in July at 547 SW 13th Street, Suite 3 in Bend.

ADVENTURES on the TRAILS

With hundreds of miles of singletrack, Bend has become a mountain bike mecca in the Pacific Northwest. For those who live here, that means a seemingly endless amount of mountain biking trails to experience as we enter the 2025 season.

If you want a new singletrack challenge on Bend’s westside, check out three of my favorite 20+ mile loops. Then, grab a trail map and start linking some of your favorite trails together!

Beginner Loop

Start: Phil’s Trailhead

Route: Ben’s — Pine Drops — Upper Whoops Access Road (via 310) — Upper Whoops — Lower Whoops — EXT — Phil’s Distance: ~20.6 miles // Elevation gain: ~1,917 feet

If your average ride is around ten miles, this Phil’s beginner loop is a great place to test your stamina. It is also an excellent option for longer family rides as it has the most intersecting trails to cut the ride short if your kiddos, or you, can’t make it.

It begins with a 5.5-mile climb up Ben’s, a green (beginner) trail. Besides one techy and fun rocky section, the trail is relatively smooth as it climbs just over 700 feet. Ben’s is a one-way trail (climbing only), so you won’t need to worry about descending riders or blind corners.

Push Your Limits on These 20+ Mile Mountain Bike Rides in Bend

From Ben’s, connect onto Pine Drops, another green trail, climbing two miles and 475 feet. Once at the top, take a left on Forest Road 310, then a right in roughly half a mile on the Upper Whoops Access Road (signs mark the way). Two more miles and 670 feet of climbing will put you at the Shooting Star Snow Shelter.

Now, it is time to descend! Upper Whoops is a flowy, two-mile blue (intermediate) trail with fun turns and a few rooty sections. While there aren’t many technical trail features, sections of Upper Whoops can get pretty fast. Also, as of now, Upper Whoops is a two-way trail, and some people occasionally climb it, so keep an eye out as you descend.

Upper Whoops connects to Lower Whoops, a twomile blue descending-only trail. You’ll get to practice your jumps here, as Lower Whoops is littered with them. Fortunately, there are no mandatory gaps, and every jump is rollable.

Connect on the half-mile EXT trail — a green trail climbing roughly 60 feet — at the bottom of Lower Whoops. From there, connect onto Phil’s, a descending-only trail stretching nearly six miles back to the trailhead.

While most of Phil’s is green with fast, pedal-flow, a rocky section kicks things up a notch. You will know you are getting close as Phil’s crosses a forest road, enters a canyon, and are out when you see the Flaming Chicken (just trust me). From the chicken, you only have two miles to the trailhead.

Intermediate Loop

Start: Cascade Lakes Welcome Station

Route: Ticket to Ride (heading west/clockwise) — Voodoo Child — Voodoo — Ben’s — Pine Drops — Phil’s/Storm King Access — Storm King (North) — Storm King (South) — Catch and Release

Distance: 20 miles // Elevation gain: ~1,420 feet

Starting at Cascade Lakes Welcome Station, head west on Ticket to Ride for about 2.5 miles before connecting onto Voodoo Child. While both trails are rated green, you’ll find them a bit more rocky than Ben’s or Phil’s, upping the challenge just a bit.

Voodoo Child will connect you to the blue-rated Voodoo, providing relatively smooth sailing aside from punchy climbs. Voodoo will eventually end on Ben’s, climbing the trail's remaining 1.5 miles and 170 feet. From Ben’s, jump on Pine Drops, climbing its nearly 500 feet and two miles before connecting on the Phil’s/Storm King Access trail (just to the left of Pine Drops as you come out).

The Storm King Access trail will put you at the start of Storm King. Stretching over 8.5 miles, the blue Storm King trail is broken into “North” and “South” sections, divided by the highway. A true trail biker’s paradise, Storm King matches long, fast, flowy descents with punchy, sometimes technical climbs.

Completing Storm King connects you to Catch and Release, where you will turn left (northeast-ish) and head back to the trailhead. The two miles spent on the blue-rated Catch and Release will have you going up and down like an EKG before crossing the highway at the welcome center.

Advanced Loop

Start: Skyliner Trailhead

Route: Tumalo Ridge Trail — Tumalo Ridge doubletrack — Swede Ridge — Swampy Lakes — South Fork — SF to Tumalo Creek (connector) — North Fork — Metolius-Windigo — Mrazek — Farwell — Tumalo Creek

Distance: 23 miles // Elevation gain: ~2,700 feet

The advanced loop has several trails to piece together, but it is pretty straightforward once you’re riding. Trust me, the struggle will be worth it — this loop has two of the best descending trails in all of Bend.

Tumalo Ridge Trail will be a grunt as it ascends over 600 feet with some rocky bits and punchy climbs. Don’t worry, this blue trail gives way to some fun downs before switching to an old fire road, the Tumalo Ridge doubletrack.

After the doubletrack, jump onto Swede Ridge, an undulating blue with one particularly steep climb (walking it is okay!). After nearly two miles, Swede Ridge ends abruptly, and you’ll take a right on the Swampy Lakes trail, a blue with some technical roots and one stream crossing.

In just half a mile, you’ll be at South Fork, a proper black (advanced) trail descending nearly 1,000 feet in three miles. Rocks, roots, high speeds, and optional side jumps await as you begin your plunge. Keep your eyes down the trail for hikers and the occasional mountain biker coming up!

At the bottom of South Fork, continue onto the SF to Tumalo Creek connector. This will take you to the North Fork climb, a manageable four miles and 1,100 feet. The trail has spectacular views of Tumalo Falls before diving back into the dense forest. More waterfalls will be on either side of the trail as you pedal up through this truly spectacular zone.

The climb is almost over, just another hundred feet on Met-Win through some fun, rooty technical sections.

Met-Win gives way to a mostly descending mile-anda-half of Mrazek that will be a little rooty, a little rocky, and probably very sandy.

Don’t miss the turn onto Farewell — the other major descent on this loop, dropping over 1,100 feet in three miles. Farewell starts in the forest before opening up to spectacular views of the Cascades and Tumalo Falls. The terrain is rough and chunky, with fast sections, tight turns, and a lot of exposure. Be careful and have fun!

Farewell ends at the Tumalo Falls Trailhead, where you will jump back on the Tumalo Creek connector, a mellow green trail that will take you back to the Skyliner Trailhead. Watch for hikers!

Fun for All

Don’t let the mileage stop you from trying one of these loops. The beauty of Bend trails is that we have so many, and there is likely a cutoff nearby if you bite off more than you can chew. If you’re worried about whether you can make it, or you’re bringing kids along with you, each loop has cross trails that can potentially make things shorter.

The beginner loop has several optional trails to make things shorter if needed — MTB Trail, KGB, and Voodoo. These allow you to get off the “climbing only” Ben’s Trail and return to the parking lot. The intermediate loop has several cutoff options as well. Depending on where you are, trails like C.O.D. or Grand Slam can get you back to your car if needed.

Cutoffs become trickier with the advanced loop, especially after the South Fork descent. North Fork is a climbing-only trail, so if you need to turn back, you must walk your bike down.

Look at a trail map and see what you can manage. Try one of these larger Bend loops or create one of your own!

See you out there!
