“I always avoided the dentist until I met Dr. Arredondo. I had an actual fear and would only go in when I had tooth pain. I had heard about Dr. Arredondo through a co-worker and thought I’d give him a try. I scheduled a comprehensive exam and found I needed quite a bit of work. I was nervous at first, but with each appointment I started to look forward to the next, knowing I was ensuring the health and longevity of my teeth. Dr. Arredondo helped me get over my fear of dentists and has helped give me confidence through an amazing smile. Thank you Dr. Arredondo and your amazing staff!!” - Brian Lee, Radio DJ from 99.7 The Bull

WHILE GROWING UP, I REMEMBER THE WAY THAT WE DRESSED IN SCHOOL WAS ALL ABOUT CONFORMITY. All the pre-teen and teen insecurities made us feel more comfortable to make sure we wore the “cool” jeans, the “in” shoes and the latest styles to fit in. I was so relieved to enter adulthood and begin to enjoy the freedom of developing my own personal style without worrying about peer pressure. It was so much easier! Style—whether the way you dress, decorate your home, or approach your favorite activity—is unique to each one of us. Bend is full of creative expression, and the styles we see around town reflect our active lives with no shortage of personal flair. This issue introduces you to several talented trendsetters making their mark in Bend. The following pages will introduce you to the Gilreaths, a local family entrenched

LEELA MORIMOTO’S WORLD OF ORIGAMI ART AND DESIGN ARTICLE JULIE E. FURNAS PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL PARTON

I d l o F

MOST ARTISTS DISCOVER AND HONE INDIVIDUAL TALENTS AT A YOUNG AGE. Leela Morimoto, owner and chief artist for LeeMo Designs, is no exception. Her talent of folding paper started at three years old when her mother needed something to keep her daughter's fidgety fingers occupied. Once she started, she couldn’t stop—folding anything and everything she could get her hands on. Today, LeeMo Designs features unique origami jewelry and household décor items such as multi-dimensional nightlights and brightly colored wall art. Growing up in India, Hawaii and Japan, Morimoto was exposed to many different cultures, art techniques, and uses of colors. Her designs draw on inspiration from her paternal grandmother, nature, and fashion. Global experiences led her to Oregon, where she graduated with a BFA in Product Design from University of Oregon. Whether in origami crane earrings, men’s cufflinks or wall art, her work showcases the beautiful and unique types of Japanese-imported paper she uses. The type of paper determines the level of difficulty and technique of folding used. “[While] the folding is no different for solid [color] versus prints, the thickness and texture of the paper do matter,” says Morimoto. She started making jewelry in 2008, “To challenge myself to fold smaller and smaller,” she says. The production of nightlights, curtains and wall art began in 2015 when she began to expand the jewelry business and collaborate with other local artists to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Her favorite piece to create is the popular LeeMo Signature Design, called the Ayano Diamond, which happens to bring her back to where she started: the design was created when she was a child. Today she continues to share her love of wearable paper art. LeeMoDesigns.com 16

ENJOY WHAT YOU OWN

CLOSET AUDIT ARTICLE JULIE E. FURNAS A YEARLY CLOSET AUDIT IS SMART AND IMPORTANT FOR THREE REASONS: IT’S AN EFFECTIVE WAY TO ELIMINATE UNWANTED CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES; IT HELPS TO REORGANIZE THE ITEMS YOU WEAR AND MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD, AND IT ALLOWS YOU TO PUT TOGETHER A LIST OF ITEMS YOU NEED THAT CAN BE PAIRED WITH THOSE TIMELESS PIECES THAT YOU’LL KEEP FOR A WHILE. Tips from Barbara Dolezal, a personal stylist with Bend-based business Style IQ, guides us on how to create a space that feels personal and makes dressing easier and more fun.

WHERE TO START A CLOSET AUDIT? “Go in with a very open mind, snacks, and possibly a friend—it’s going to take a few hours,” says Dolezal, who has been working in clients’ closets for more than 15 years. Some questions to ask about items in a closet include: When was the last time it was worn? Is it comfortable? Is it in good shape? And would it be purchased today, even it was on sale? “Be very honest with yourself. If you try most things on, it makes the honesty part much easier,” Dolezal says. When Style IQ does a closet audit, more than 50 percent of clothing and accessories get tried on so decisions can be made more effectively.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IN THE PROCESS? Getting rid of things in your closet can be difficult yet rewarding once the process is complete. “The, ‘When I lose 10-15 pounds’ section just needs to go. It really does,” Dolezal says. “When you do lose the weight, you’ll be so excited about the new you that you are going to want to treat yourself to new clothes,” she says. At this point in the closet audit, you’ve kept things that make you feel great. Consign or donate other items. There are multiple resale shops as well as thrift stores in Central Oregon where proceeds go to a worthy cause.

HOW TO LOVE YOUR CLOSET AGAIN: Once the closet audit is complete, maximize the space that exists by considering storing seasonal items, re-organizing space for clothes, accessories and shoes or possibly redesigning your existing closet. Don’t underestimate the power of baskets and hooks, which are especially helpful for accessories according to Style IQ. Another

Physical Therapy Plays in Neck Pain Relief

At the San Francisco airport with three young kids and luggage in tow, Lenya Montoya of Bend, lifted more than she could handle, which resulted in a neck injury. “We were visiting the grandparents, and the kids were too young to be much help with their luggage, so I managed most of it,” said Lenya. “However, when I got home the following week I knew I did more than just strained my neck. It was painful to touch, tight, and my range of motion was very restricted.” A retired physical therapist, Lenya was highly in-tune to her body. Unable to look side to side or up, driving a car was a complete challenge. Reaching overhead increased the stiffness she felt in her neck, which eliminated her ability to participate in a lot of the activities she enjoyed. Lenya began a series of at-home stretches and strengthening exercises to help relieve her pain. “I only had about 30 percent improvement,” said Lenya. “I knew I couldn’t segmentally mobilize my upper thoracic spine by myself, so my primary care doctor referred me to Glenn at Step & Spine Physical Therapy,” Lenya added. “In addition to a weak upper back, Lenya had joints in her neck that were restricted from the injury. Because the joints could not move correctly the pressure and strain was extending to the neighboring joints,” said Glenn MacLean-Talbot, PT, DPT of Step & Spine Physical Therapy in Bend. Massage is often a first line treatment for neck pain, however, it often provides only temporary relief. While it helps relax the muscles, the stiff joint will cause them to tighten again, creating a repetitive cycle. “Weak muscles get tight faster than strong muscles,” said MacLean-Talbot. “A lot of times we try massage, however, we should be stretching and strengthening as well.” In this type of injury, the trick is to get the restricted joints moving again and restore muscle function. Once joint motion is restored, it is important to strengthen the neck and upper back so they can work together when performing different activities. A physical therapist’s expertise is crucial for identifying the specific muscles and motions that are weak and then creating a very precise exercise program. To prevent future neck injuries, Lenya is continuing to strengthen both her back and neck using the customized program Glenn provided. She believes physical therapy is the best treatment for a lot of the pain issues that people develop. “Other disciplines only address the soft tissue or hard tissue, but not both,” said Lenya. “Physical therapy offers complete care, as far as mobilization, stretching, strengthening and postural education.”

AS THE SEASON EXPRESSES ITSELF IN CHANGING TONES AND COLORS, CREATIVITY EXPRESSES ITSELF IN HOW WE DRESS, DECORATE OUR HOMES AND IN THE CASE OF THE GILREATH FAMILY—IN EVERY FACET OF DAILY LIFE. Abe and Kirsten Gilreath, the founders/proprietors of local lifestyle shops Ju-bee-lee and Abode, realized their combined creativity through a spirit of entrepreneurship that began early. By their 20s, the duo had already launched the successful snowboard brand Mission Six by taking on every aspect of its creative direction: designing clothing, merchandising and the strategic plan. Ju-bee-lee was born in 2013 from a desire to stay in Bend and raise their family. Kate, 21, is now a visual communications student at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Luke, 18, is entering the music program at University of Oregon this fall. “It’s a way of life to be creative,” Kirsten Gilreath says of their family. “There is no other way for us to be.” “Being down-to-earth creative people gave us the ability to build our life and stay in the community,” she says. Kirsten selects gifts, furniture and clothing for her stores to create an element of “magic” and inspire the wonder of discovery that helps others express themselves in their own lives. Abe is a talented visual artist: his large-scale paintings fill the walls of their home and he builds furniture and fixtures as they appear in their minds’ eyes. The Gilreath’s creativity extends to their personal style, and clothing is another place for their expression of individuality. Kirsten says she enjoys, “Tradition with a ‘twist’.” Her advice: Select your basic (like a classic pair of vintage or new-American Levi’s) then add an element of surprise. “It’s hard to go wrong when you get the basics right,” she says. For Abe and Kirsten Gilreath, they say their greatest gift is to be creative. Their fall style expresses a life of artistic expression and the subtle beauty of the season. THE STYLE OF GIVING BACK ARTICLE KELSEY CLASPELL | PHOTOGRAPHY CHERYL PARTON

AT FIRST GLANCE, THE TREND OF MEN’S FACIAL HAIR MAY APPEAR TO BE SIMPLY A MATTER OF STYLE. Yet beards provide a segue to substance and community support. Beard clubs exist not only as a place for bearded individuals to come together and share a common interest, but also to make the world a better place. In fact, 98 percent of beard clubs in the U.S. have a strong charity focus. Bend is home to the Central Oregon Mustache and Beard Society (COMBS) which began in 2010. Bend Lifestyle spoke with COMBS President Casey Lillibridge to learn about COMBS and his personal beard style—the “Business Beard,” a popular beard trend in Bend. “A lot of people see beard clubs as a bunch of tough biker dudes,” says Lillibridge. “We want to show Bend that we’re here to give back and support the local community.”

The Business Beard CASEY The Business LILLIBRIDGE Beard CASEY LILLIBRIDGE The Business Beard is a beard style described as short and proper, clean-cut and professional. Casey Lillibridge, president of Central Oregon Mustache and Beard Society (COMBS) rocks one with pride and has taken home several first-place awards at beard competitions up and down the West Coast. He describes his mustache as, “Wild, but styled for it to be clean and competitive.” Originally from San Diego, Lillibridge moved to Bend 15 years ago to get away from the crazy pace and city traffic. He’s since devoted his lifestyle to focus on helping others and is currently a CPR/first aid instructor studying to be an EMT. Aside from giving back, Lillibridge is also a champion for inclusion. “We accept all kinds of beards at COMBS,” he says. Lillibridge has been a member of COMBS for the past four years and has helped the club become a philanthropic organization with the mission to make Bend a better, more uplifting place to live. As a beard aficionado and a humanitarian, he played a major role in starting COMBS’ charitable efforts, from beard competitions to local fundraisers, as well as supporting other beard clubs’ competitions. Lillibridge is currently working on his sixth event, a beard competition at Worthy Brewing on September 15th to benefit the Family Access Network. The competition is open. “(We) want everyone to know that you’re welcome here regardless of your beard size,” he says. “People tend to think that it’s the biggest beard that wins (in competition), but in reality, a short beard is just as cool as a big beard.” CentralOregonBeards.Typepad.com THE ARTIST | Casey trims and styles his own beard, but recommends Hannah at Bond Street Barber Shop, 841 NW Bond Street, Bend. AND VIEWERS A GLIMPSE, INTO THE WORLD OF BEND TRENDS AND FASHION. While top influencers can garner followers into the hundreds of thousands, Insta-Bend carves out its own niche by sharing the look and feel of our active community with inspirations from the environment. "I have always loved fashion, clothes and finding a great deal," says Ariana Powell of @bargainbosss. As a former journalist, Powell began her account as a way to challenge herself in a new way, plus have fun while doing it. "Bend style is something so much deeper than a certain look, it's about supporting the community," she says. "There are so many fashion influencers/bloggers out there, and for me, it's about standing out in the crowd by being myself," she says. Powell believes style is whatever you want it to be—whatever makes you feel confident in your own skin. Check out these stylish accounts to be inspired by fashion stories as they unfold post by post. @amarabessa @bargainbosss @cosacura @hotboxbetty @mirandapaul PHOTO: A.J. Powell
