because often it’s the feeling that a home gives us that means something. That could be attributed to location, interior design, or often and most importantly, those who share the home with us. Home is our little sanctuary that reflects our truest selves. This month, we bring you our “Home” issue, and each story brings a different definition to the word. Home can mean a strong sense of community, and we learn about the Freemans, who have kept community at their core since day one with opening Bellevue Square in 1946. Home can also represent our style, and we sat down with sought-after designer Brian Paquette, who shared with us some interior design tips. Home can be a reflection of the old and new, as seen in our Open House cover story with Roberts Group renovation of an old home in Enatai. And finally, if home is “where the heart is,” then that also means we think of our neighbors, and while Bellevue is known for its abundance, there are still many in our community in need, and we highlight Humble Design, a wonderful nonprofit that helps make a house a home.

CORPORATE TEAM CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Steven Schowengerdt CHIEF SALES OFFICER Matthew Perry

With springtime upon us, we can’t forget a shift in the real estate market, and we asked Bellevue Lifestyle’s luxury realtors to share with us their forecasts and tips for buyers and sellers. Who better to learn from than the experts themselves? Whether you’ve just moved to Bellevue or it’s a place your family has occupied for generations, we hope this issue inspires you to appreciate the place you call home!

WHAT COULD A CLIENT EXPECT WHEN HIRING YOU TO HELP CURATE THEIR DREAM HOME? They can expect a support system and a co-creator. I could, of course, come in and bulldoze the creative process telling people they need this and this and this, but they would not be happy in the result. It would not be home to them; it would be mine, and that's not success. It is a process for sure, and it is not without a bit of stress and commitment, but the result will be life-changing for years to come. We are only as good as our last client, and it holds up that most of our clientele are friends and referrals. WHAT IS YOUR DREAM PROJECT OR A FAVORITE RECENT PROJECT YOU’VE COMPLETED? A dream project is less about space and more about open-mindedness, and of course, a good budget never hurts the process. A dream project is a client who comes to us for our strengths. WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE FOR 2019? I hope to see more intention and more thoughtfulness in what people buy and bring into their home. We are slapped in the face with quick fixes every day. Slow down and take your time. WHAT ARE SIMPLE WAYS PEOPLE CAN SPRUCE UP THE LOOK OF THEIR HOME? Fresh flowers and natural life in a home are my favorite ways to quickly revive a space.

ANY TRICKS FOR ENHANCING SMALL SPACES? The idea that small spaces need smaller things is silly. You must be comfortable. You will never be comfortable if your only seating is a love seat and two small chairs. Ditch the chairs and get a real-sized sofa. The same goes for the bedroom. I loved my studio apartments because they forced a "less is better" mentality and made me enjoy and be purposeful when buying items for them. ANY TIPS ON SMALL THINGS YOU CAN DO TO START ENHANCING THE AESTHETIC OR DESIGN OF YOUR HOUSE? Slow down and stop looking at social media and what companies tell you what a beautiful home should be ... only you and your designer can determine that. Start with books and visual imagery that inspires you and find out why. Why does that painting by Cy Twombly inspire you. Is it the space? Is it the color? Whatever it is, draw it out in something in your home—the color of a room or a textile on a beloved chair. Think about quality of light. One of the biggest changes in a home can be dimmable 40-watt bulbs throughout a space in your decorative lighting ... you may never leave the space, and that's OK.

RESTORING FAITH BY DESIGN

LOCAL NONPROFIT HELPS SEATTLE FAMILIES FIND THEIR WAY HOME

IMAGINE A FAMILY MOVING INTO THEIR FIRST HOME FROM A SHELTER AND THE HOME HAS NO FURNITURE—CHILDREN SITTING, SLEEPING AND EATING ON THE FLOOR. Now, imagine an organization that helps create stability for these recently homeless families by furnishing and decorating the empty home. An organization that helps restore dignity to people who have been homeless and creates a warm and welcoming home for them. That organization is Humble Design. Founded in Detroit in 2009 by Treger Strasberg, Humble Design now offers its services in four locations around the country, including Seattle. Treger did not set out to start a nonprofit. She was working in the corporate world in marketing when she realized a co-worker was struggling with transitioning out of homelessness. She began to collect items for her co-worker’s home and continued to collect items for other recently homeless families, and Humble Design was born.

“ G e t t i n g to s e e t h e l o o k o n t h e fa c e s o f t h e fa m i l i e s w e s e rv e — i t ’ s as t h o u g h t h e i r fa i t h i n h u m a n i t y h as b e e n r e sto r e d a n d t h e y a r e s o g r at e f u l — i t m a k e s e v e ry t h i n g w e d o s o w o r t h i t a n d r e wa r d i n g .” –T i a B a k e r , o p e r at i o n s m a n a g e r , H u m b l e D e s i g n s S e at t l e

Shortly after, U-Haul took notice of Humble Design and played an instrumental role in expanding the nonprofit, including providing a wrapped humble truck for each warehouse. To date, Humble Design provides personalized furnishings for the homes of families in Detroit, Chicago, San Diego and Seattle. The Seattle office, launched in 2018, is located near West Seattle and is run by Operations Manager Tia Baker. Tia made the leap from the corporate world in the legal field to Humble Design and was the first hire for the Seattle location. A Seattle native, she saw firsthand how bad the homelessness problem was becoming and wished she could do something about it. When Treger, a family friend, mentioned she was opening a Seattle warehouse, it was the perfect opportunity for Tia to jump on board and be able to serve her community.

GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

Humble Design Seattle served 11 families in 2018, averaging two families per month. The goal for 2019 is to serve one family per week. They have partnered with Mary’s Place to identify people and families who are transitioning out of shelters into permanent housing. From there, they send an interior designer out to meet with the family in order to determine their needs, style and likes. The designers then return to the warehouse to curate household items and furniture based on the meeting with the family. On Fridays, known as “deco days,” volunteers arrive at the warehouse for a brief orientation and then load up all the items into the truck. They caravan to the home, unload the truck and decorate the home within three hours. The family returns to the house, and the volunteer team hosts a big reveal of the home for them. No detail is forgotten when it comes to decorating the home. Some of the sweet final touches include setting the dining table with proper place settings and utensils and putting kids’ names above their beds so they feel the sense of security of having their own bed. One of the most important pieces for Tia is making sure each home is personalized so that the family truly feels like it is their home when they walk in. Of the 11 homes that have been furnished by her team, she has seen many of the homes start without any furniture at all—families sleeping and sitting on floors, without a table to eat on or a desk for children to work on their homework. Humble Design is there to help the family have a jump-start to begin again and take any unnecessary burden away so they can focus on rebuilding and beginning a new life. They think of everything, right down to stocking toiletries and paper products in the bathrooms and kitchens of the homes they transform. The impact is so significant that less than 1 percent of the families served by Humble Design go back to homelessness.

H o w c a n yo u h e l p ? Humble Design Seattle is always looking for volunteers. With only seven employees and four of those parttime, volunteers hold the operation together. You can go to the website, HumbleDesign.org/volunteer, and sign up to volunteer for a “deco day” as an individual, or companies can volunteer as a team with a “sponsored deco day.” They are also always looking for volunteers to help keep the warehouse organized throughout the week. You can donate home goods and furniture as well by dropping off items at the warehouse Monday through Friday, or by purchasing items online through Humble Design’s Amazon Wish List. Items don’t need to be brand-new; as long as they are in good condition, they are welcome donations.

Kemper Development Company has roughly 325 employees, and more than 100 of those employees are trained security officers who keep the expansive Bellevue Collection safe. For Kemper Freeman Jr., safety is one of the most important things to keep a healthy and vibrant city flourishing. Making sure the streets of downtown Bellevue are safe for workers, residents and visitors is a top priority to ensure people continue to work, visit and live in the city. The rural town of old, one whose streets were lined with strawberry fields and farms, is now a bustling, urban city with a population of more than 700,000 people, with less than 9 percent of the population commuting out of the Eastside for work. Bellevue has become the epicenter of the Eastside, with its gorgeous skyline and complete offering for a full life; a city where you can work, eat, dine, shop, live and raise a family.

Originally built in 1955, the home underwent additions in 2012. When the current owners bought the property, they had a vision in mind that was cultivated and brought to life by design consultant Stephne Johnson, who worked hand-inhand with Roberts Group to make the homeowners’ dreams come true. Owen Roberts, the founder of Roberts Group, was involved from day one, walking through the home prior to purchase with the soon-to-be owners. For more than 25 years, the Brazen family has been influential in Bellevue real estate, leading the way with their innovative marketing and setting the standard for quality representation. Their partnership with Windermere Real Estate allows them to pair their deep roots and local knowledge with the global reach that comes from being a part of one of the leading brokerages. + LUXURY REAL ESTATE TREND FOR 2019: "In 2019, we expect to see not just your standard smart home but a rise in 'smart green homes.' The savvy Eastside buyer is still excited by the latest and greatest in-home technologies, but they have a heightened awareness for the environment as well. Smart green homes by design are built to reduce a household’s energy consumption and invest upfront in smart technologies that yield long-term, positive ROI for homeowners. + TIP FOR BUYER: "It’s not about the size of the home, it’s about the quality of the home. Homes in today’s luxury market are all about the details. The baseboards are larger, the ceilings heights are taller, and the windows are more expansive. It’s important for buyers to pay attention to the small details, like does the home have soft-close drawers? Is the driveway asphalt or paved? Are the closets custom built-ins? And what kind of appliances are used throughout the home?" + TIP FOR SELLER: "Color is making a comeback. No more of the all gray and white or “greige look” we’ve seen over the last three years. Pops of color are being woven throughout various rooms through accent walls, decor and painted furniture, and various details such as tile, cabinetry or trim.

The team has more than 30 years of expertise, representing a multitude of cultures, fluent in six languages, representing buyers and sellers both locally and around the globe and clientele at every price point. + LUXURY REAL ESTATE TREND FOR 2019: "Immense square footage of the traditionally 'luxurious' mansions are not defining luxury as in years past; having unique experiences to share and conveniences of a home are the mark of today’s luxury clients!" + TIP FOR BUYER: "Master the process with an expert. Luxury markets are hyper-local, and often relationships become incredibly important for finding the perfect luxury property that may very well not be found on the large search/data systems." + TIP FOR SELLER: "Have a great story to tell and an even better storyteller to share it with the world. The luxury market is saturated with a lot of noise. Working with a marketing expert who will curate a compelling story that sets your property apart from the masses will prove to be worth the investment." March 2019 | Bellevue Lifestyle

DIY LEATHER DOOR WEDGE

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED. + A piece of wood, about 1.5″ wide & 6.5″ long + White paint (preferably high gloss) + Minwax Polycrylic (again, gloss) + Whatever kind of saw you have on hand + Drill + Leather strip, about .5″ wide & 5″ long + #6 brass finishing washer + #6 3/4 in. brass phillips flat head wood screw + Sander or sandpaper + Paintbrushes, pencil, ruler First, use your pencil and ruler to draw a straight line diagonally across the wood. Saw along the line and sand to a smooth finish. Here’s a tip: if you have a longer length of wood, it’s easier to mark the 6.5″ length and saw the diagonal line before cutting it off the larger piece. Otherwise, you might need a clamp so you don’t saw your fingers off. Use the ruler to mark off a section at the bottom of the wedge and paint it white. Then use the polycrylic to coat the unpainted wood. Do NOT use the polycrylic on the white paint — it will yellow it. Take your leather strip and fold it in half, so that the two ends meet. Using the other scrap half of your wood as a base, drill a small hole through the center of the two ends. This just gives you a nice little place to put your screw. Place your washer over the screw, and attach the new leather handle into the back of the wedge with the drill. Now admire your handiwork.

+ 1/4-1/2 cup + 2-4 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce (Use low sodium)

+ 1/4 cup + 2-4 tablespoons rice vinegar + 2 tablespoons fish sauce (optional) + 2 tablespoons thai red curry paste + 1 tablespoon fresh ginger + 1 tablespoon sambal oelek (chili paste) + The juice of 1 lime + 1 tablespoon Chinese five spice + 1 teaspoon black pepper + 2 tablespoons sesame oil + 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon brown sugar + 2 cups wild mushrooms, left whole or button mushrooms, sliced

3. In a small bowl mix together the melted coconut oil, curry powder, miso, brown sugar and a good pinch of pepper. Add the cubed squash to a greased baking sheet and pour the curry mixture over the squash. Toss well. Bake for 30-40 minutes, tossing a couple of times during cooking. You want the squash to be lightly browned and crisp. 4. Meanwhile, remove the pork from the crockpot and add the mushrooms. Cover the crockpot and crank the heat up to high. Lightly shred the pork with two forks or your hands. 5. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sesame oil. Once hot, add enough pork to cover just the surface of your skillet, do not overcrowd the skillet. Sprinkle a little brown sugar over the pork, add 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, toss. Allow the pork to caramelize, about 2 minutes. Stir and allow the pork to continue to caramelize, about 3-5 minutes total. Remove the pork from the skillet, repeat with the remaining pork. Keep the pork warm. 6. Add the Ramen noodles to the crockpot and allow them to cook 5 minutes. Once the noodles are cooked, stir in only half of the pork. Ladle the soup into bowls. Top with extra caramelized pork, curry roasted acorn squash and an egg. Season the egg with salt and pepper, Add the carrots, jalapeños, green onions and cilantro if desired. Happy slurping!

Eastside Market Review* Greater Eastside The Eastside housing market in 2018 shifted, transitioning towards a balanced market. There are a multitude of factors affecting this change, several worth noting. First, inventory levels are at their highest since 2008/2009. From January to September last year, the number of homes for sale shot up 214%. Second, buyers are cautious due to political volatility and uncertainties around economic policy. Lastly, foreign investment is down substantially compared to 2016/2017, due to international government restrictions. This has especially impacted the Eastside, where foreign investors have contributed significantly to the Buyer pool in the last 5 years. Community
