The Founders Issue

Bedford is more than a town - it’s a lifestyle. A magnificent juxtaposition of idyllic country meets luxurious city, fueled by a vibrant community that celebrates culture, honors tradition, and embraces change. In that spirit, Bedford City Lifestyle is a monthly love letter to this beautiful corner of Northern Westchester that we call “home.”
Our Founders Issue coincides with my favorite month of the year. America’s Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and we’ve been celebrating our freedom and proudly flying our flag ever since. From fireworks and festivals to beaches and BBQs, summer is the season of outdoor fun. Did I mention that July is an extra exciting month for me and my 4-year old daughter? We share the same birthday!
I'm feeling energized and inspired by the fascinating people I've met while preparing our July issue. From the lovely Fay Fox and her gorgeous photography to celebrity makeup artist Jenn Streicher, whose thoughtfully-curated beauty destination, Scout, recently opened a sister location, Duchess, in Bedford Village. In our feature profile, you’ll meet the founders of Kaleidoscope, a garden design dream team building more than custom gardens - they’re building futures one school at a time. You’ll also meet Bedford City Lifestyle’s Publisher, Dana Cifone, a restaurateur-turned-magazine-maven who’s dedicated to sharing our area’s best stories, big and small. In this issue, Dana gives a glimpse of her around-town summer staples, and I’m a fan of them all. What else do I love about July in Bedford? Late nights while the sun stays up, outdoor everything, and daydreaming while driving down scenic backroads, roping the wind and breathing in the fresh air.
Dana and I would like to thank our generous Founding Partners for believing in the vision for Bedford City Lifestyle, as well as our fellow media who have forged the path for storytelling in our communities. As we mark the milestone of our debut issue and embark on this journey together, we invite you to discover your neighbors, explore your towns, and fall in love with Bedford all over again, and again, and again.

Caramoor has long been the exemplar of the transformative power of live music performed by world-renowned artists in a wide variety of genres, from classical music performances that seek to expand the canon by spotlighting pieces from living and/or under-represented composers, to American Roots, jazz, opera, global and site-specific sound art installations. With a stunning variety of music performed in its verdant open-air venues, Caramoor’s curated concert season presents performers representing a vast array of backgrounds and lived experiences.
Caramoor's grounds opened for the summer with "Soundscapes," a celebration of sound art in which visitors were invited to discover a world of fascinating sounds through its Sonic Innovations exhibition. Live performances included Thereminist Dorit Chrysler
on the world’s oldest electronic instrument, and Pianist Conor Hanick’s musical art piece honoring John Cage’s complete Sonatas and Interludes.
“True to the vision of its founders, Caramoor is the place where you can be transformed by the convergence of an exciting and diverse mix of remarkable live music performances, stunning gardens and grounds, and the beauty of an art-filled historic home,” said Edward J. Lewis III, Caramoor’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “The Caramoor experience leaves both the artist and audience refreshed and renewed, and compels all to return again and again.”
Caramoor's summer concert season debut performance was by vocalist Audra McDonald with the Orchestra of St. Luke's led by Andy Einhorn. The summer concert series will
continue with over 40 performances through August 18th, culminating with piano rocker Neal Francis performing on Caramoor's Friends Field. Among the highlights of Caramoor’s adventurous programming this summer are the New York premiere of Ted Hearne’s FARMING performed by The Crossing; Grammy Award-winning Malian vocalist Oumou Sangaré; Handel’s Acis and Galatea with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra; and the annual Jazz Festival, presented in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center, which will be headlined by six-time Grammy-winning vocalist and MacArthur Grant recipient Cécile McLorin Salvant. Caramoor has also partnered with the Bedford Riding Lanes Association (BRLA) to offer an experience that includes an explorative hike on the private BRLA trails surrounding Caramoor, followed by Music and Meditation in the Garden.
“Each summer, we curate an extremely broad variety of music. One of the most fun parts of my job is choosing, from among our many beautiful venues, the perfect setting for each performance,” said Kathy Schuman, Caramoor’s Artistic Director.
Caramoor boasts five unique venues for performances. New this summer, guests can attend intimate classical recitals in the Music Room, which was once the living room of Caramoor’s founders, Walter and Lucie Rosen. Large-scale concerts are presented beneath the open-sided tent of the Venetian Theater. Casual concerts on Friends Field have a chill vibe: guests bring their own blankets, chairs, and picnics (food is available on-site) while enjoying stunning sunsets. Intimate settings include the outdoor Spanish Courtyard, replete with a fountain and surrounded by the Italianate architecture and stained glass windows of the Rosen House. The Sunken Garden is the venue for Caramoor’s Music & Meditation series, classical guitar performances, and more. The grounds are also open to explore for free from Thursday-Sunday, 10:00am-4:00pm.
Caramoor is the perfect destination for gathering outdoors with friends and family to feel renewed by the dynamic power of music and the arts. “There are so many different ways to enjoy music at Caramoor,” says Schuman. “I truly believe experiencing a performance here is unlike anywhere else in the greater New York area.” To learn more about Caramoor and its summer programs, visit www.caramoor.org. | @caramoor
Walking up the gravel path to the picturesque home office of Kaleidoscope Garden Design, it’s no surprise that there are countless potting plants lining the walkway. The front door opens and Roscoe, a massive senior dog and unofficial mascot of Kaleidoscope, hobbles out to greet me. “Roscoooooe!” The voice belongs to Alexandra Forrester, co-founder of
Kaleidoscope and a Bedford native. She walks toward me, freshfaced, her air-dried hair pulled back into a ponytail. Roscoe decides that I’ve brought nothing of interest to him and saunters off to rest under a shade tree. “He’ll lay there for hours,” she says with a laugh. “He loves being outdoors.”
It’s nice weather, so Alexandra and I settle in on her quaint back deck, adorned with hummingbird feeders and more potting plants. Toby Adams, Kaleidoscope’s co-founder and longtime Director of the Edible Academy at the New York Botanical Garden, has joined us, carrying a large garden salad that he harvested himself. There’s a joke about potato salad, so I ask its significance.
“We’ve created a dynamic school gardening curriculum that students get to experience with their classmates and teachers, and it’s important to extend that learning beyond the classroom to make it a lifestyle at home.”
From celebrity clients to school students, Kaleidoscope Garden Design is growing generations of environmental stewards.
Toby: So as you know, Kaleidoscope partners with schools to build their vegetable gardens and create a gardening curriculum for each grade. When we launched in 2011, we wanted to prove our worth and had the idea for a Potato Salad Challenge. Long story short, we harvested 40 pounds of potatoes and worked until 2am the night before the challenge, cleaning and boiling potatoes to bring to school the next day. That was the first and last year of the Potato Salad Challenge.
GIVE ME A BREAKDOWN OF YOUR SCHOOL GARDENING CURRICULUM.
Alexandra: We create fall and spring curriculums that directly support learning standards in the Natural Sciences, Math, and English Language Arts, and incorporate what kids are learning exclusive to their grade level in support of classroom teachers.
Toby: We also offer family friendly activities through the summer recess period to build community. It’s great for families new to the districts because it serves as a soft opening for meeting people. Our gardens bring them together.
WHAT DOES KALEIDOSCOPE DO WITH ITS EXTRA HARVEST?
Alexandra: We constantly donate from our harvests. In the spring of 2020, we hosted virtual workshops with the schools. Toby and I went to each school to harvest and donated 1,000 pounds of produce that season to Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry, among others.
IS THERE A CAUSE THAT KALEIDOSCOPE ALIGNS WITH?
Alexandra: Support local farms. Care about what goes into your body. And I encourage everyone to educate themselves on the Seed Savers Foundation, which aims to save our diversity in seed stock. It’s a massive issue on a global scale and it effects all of us every day.
YOU’VE BEEN BUILDING AND MANAGING SCHOOL GARDENS FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS. WHAT ARE YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS?
Toby: A college student reached out to me about her thesis on food politics, exploring the need for equal access to healthy foods. She told me that she was in our program in elementary school and it made a lifelong impact.
Alexandra: I once had a group of 7th grade boys planting tomatoes. One started singing a song, and all the other boys began singing along. It wasn’t meant to be silly; they let their guard down because they were having a great time. Kids these days are a bit disconnected as a result of electronics, and school is stressful. Gardening is a therapeutic outlet for them.
YOU DESIGN AND MANAGE RESIDENTIAL GARDENS, ALSO, AND HAVE DONE MANY OF THEM AROUND HERE, INCLUDING FOR MANY CELEBRITIES. WHO WAS YOUR FIRST RESIDENTIAL CLIENT?
Toby: It was a decade ago; the parent of a student in our program. Her daughter loved the curriculum and she’s still our client today.
Alexandra: We have several school families with gardens in their backyards, and we even garden with them. Kids have a rewarding experience gardening at school, and it’s creating positive change in our communities for generations to come.

Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings. For this alfresco dinner party, Chef Kyle draws on his favorite recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast.
• Build a menu around the season. Start with what produce is available locally based on the season for the most authentic meal experience. For instance, Chef Kyle says “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” but that meal served in the heat of Summer wouldn’t hit the same. In-season fruits and vegetables will always be of highest quality and best taste.
• Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.
• Draw inspiration from the season’s colors and temperatures. For Spring and Summer, think flowers, fresh herbs and linens. For Fall, think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” For Winter, head indoors to create a cozy environment for guests to connect.
• “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with bur - nished brass for warm fall vibes.”
• An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.”
• Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.”
• To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!”
• As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” Insider Tips for Hosting: “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Yield: 6 servings
• 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved
• 1-2 tablespoons olive oil
• ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced
• 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin
• 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice
• Salt, pepper to taste
• 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted
• Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional).
2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven.
4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes.
5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes.
6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute.
7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley.
9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
• If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters.
• Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.
Yield: 6-10 servings
• 2 cups heirloom carrot, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom rutabaga, peeled, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom parsnip, cubed
• 1 cup heirloom turnip, cubed
• 2 cups heirloom marble potatoes, halved
• 3 tablespoons rosemary, fresh, de-stemmed, chopped
• 1 tablespoon thyme, fresh, de-stemmed, chopped
• 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• Salt – to taste
• Pepper – to taste
• Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. Pre-heat oven to 400°F on convection setting (425°F conventional).
2. In mixing bowl, add oil and raw cut vegetables. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
3. Place seasoned vegetables on oiled baking sheet and bake in oven until they are caramelized and tender, about 30-60 minutes. Will be soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some lightly charred areas.
4. Remove from oven once finished cooking.
5. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley.
6. Enjoy.
Yields 4 cups
• 3 cups cranberries, fresh or frozen
• 1 cup cranberry juice, sweetened
• 1 piece orange peel
• 1 each orange for zesting
• ½ cup orange juice, freshly juiced
• 3 each cinnamon stick
• ¼ teaspoon clove, ground
• ¼ teaspoon allspice, ground
• ½ cup sugar
• Pinch salt
METHOD OF PREPARATION:
1. In medium saucepot on high heat, add everything except orange peel and orange zest. Bring ingredients to boil, then reduce to a simmer with lid.
2. While simmering, stir occasionally with rubber spatula ensuring bottom does not burn. Simmer for 30 minutes or until sauce thickens.
3. Remove lid and add orange peel and season to taste. Can add more sugar or spice if needed.
4. Once sauce is thickened and most liquid has evaporated, remove orange peel and cinnamon sticks and remove pot from heat.
5. With hand-held blender, puree sauce, keeping some texture.
6. Freshly grate in orange zest, stir and season to taste.
7. Transfer sauce to jar and place in refrigerator to cool overnight.
8. Enjoy!
CHEF NOTES:
• Enjoy with all types of poultry and game birds.
• Do not use ground cinnamon.
• Can puree with blender if you do not have hand-held blender.
• Consistency should be thick sauce and not a jelly.
8 WAYS TO ORGANIZE AND INJECT STYLE INTO YOUR SPACE
ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASSANDRA CASTANEDAEvery woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.
CONTINUED > 27 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/BEDFORD JULY 2023
The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!
Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions.
Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

Living just beyond the border of Bedford for more than a decade, I’ve spent much of my time in town, shopping and enjoying all that Bedford has to offer. As a longtime restaurateur (my most recent venture was Townhouse in Greenwich) I love meeting people and hearing their stories, which inspired me to launch Bedford City Lifestyle.
I’ve discovered so much joy exploring our area. One of my afternoon guilty pleasures is an espresso and a chocolate bar from Mast Market in Mount Kisco. It’s a great spot to relax and meet up with friends! Another favorite place of mine to pop into is The Huntress in Pound Ridge. I always find the perfect gift when I need one for a birthday or a housewarming, and I adore the scented Apollo candles – No.11 is my must-have.
Aside from shopping and dining, I enjoy walking through town with my puppy, Meeka. It’s been so nice to see everyone enjoying life outdoors now that the summer is finally here. Speaking of, I never leave home without my sandals from Very Lovely Soles, a lifestyle shoe brand born right here in Westchester. Support local!
I’m excited to share all of the people and places of Bedford and its surrounding towns, and look forward to seeing you out and about.
