Health & Wellness Issue

Happy 2025!

I hope everyone had a very happy, healthy and enjoyable holidays! And now that ‘it’s the holidays’ isn’t an excuse for over-indulgence for another ten and a half months or so, we’re here to help you get back on track with our annual health & wellness issue.

This issue is packed with gems.  The Skinny Confidential founder Lauryn Bosstick, who’s long been extraordinarily disciplined with daily rituals and routines to optimize her mental and physical health, shares a day in her life, full of helpful tips to incorporate into your own routines. Other useful how-to intel comes from top trainers Sandy Brockman and Tone It Up co-founder Karena Dawn who demonstrated a workout that can easily be done at home with a pair of weights and an optional chair.  Our cover stars are pro volleyball players Juliann Faucette and Andrea Nuete-Elliott. Juliann plays her first game this month on the inaugural season of a new pro volleyball league and balances life as an athlete with being a full time mom of three. Andrea now plays beach volleyball, runs a business conceived by her husband, UT Volleyball Head Coach Jerritt Elliot and dedicates time to mental health causes.

Elsewhere in the issue we learn about Innate Beauty founder Dr. Shirat Ling’s magic machine for a non-invasive ‘baby face lift’ and learn about facials for every age from the owner of BelVer Studios. We also have longevity hacks for dogs, courtesy of the founders of Roots Integrative Veterinary Care.

There’s all that and more packed in the pages of this issue that I hope gives you a nugget of knowledge that helps with your new year goals, or at the least leaves you a little bit inspired. Thank you for reading and wishing you all a happy and healthy year full of dreams fulfilled and many happy memories.

Cheers,

January 2025

Learning from the Ultimate Daily Routine

LAURYN BOSSTICK SHARES TIPS FOR OPTIMAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH

The Skinny Confidential founder gives us a look inside her average day and her non-negotiables. The answers provide kernels of knowledge to help you level up your routine in 2025.

WALK US THROUGH WELLNESS RITUALS AND ROUTINES YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY…

I wake up around 7am and immediately remove the mouth tape, then tongue scrape, ice roll, open the shades and make the bed. The kids and I try to get outside right away so lately we’ve been sitting outside with books or crayons and coloring sheets and we hang out for 30 minutes to an hour.

Then I’ll do a quick morning skincare with some facial massage and get my gym clothes on. We turn on Bossanova jazz music, light Primally Pure candles and make breakfast for the kids. As soon as they’re done eating, my son and I go out for a circadian walk. He sits in the stroller and I turn on a walking meditation and we just walk.

We get time together, our movement in, and absorb the morning light. When I get home, if there’s time I’ll do the sauna for 15 minutes with a 4-minute cold plunge, then Michael and I take our daughter to school and go to the gym to see our trainer. I like to have a coffee with a couple of inches of raw milk before I work out because it’s this perfect combo of fat, carbs and protein that I think is the ideal pre-workout drink. We get our raw milk from a local farmer here in Austin.

When I get home, I’ll usually have Sunlife’s spicy bone broth and I’ll make some kind of hydration drink with electrolytes, colostrum, lemon, and aminos. While I drink this, I write out my day. I set intentions, the book I’m reading, what podcast I’ll listen to, who I’m sending good vibes to, the things I’m grateful for and any to-dos that have to get done.

Around 10:00am I get right into work mode. I get hyper-focused and pack as much as I can into the day so that I always have dedicated time to bookend the day with my family. We’re full-time working parents, so things don’t always go this way, but we try!

THINGS I TRY TO DO EVERY NIGHT:

Warm eucalyptus shower: Grab some eucalyptus leaves from the farmer’s market, rinse them off, roll over them with a rolling pin to release aromas, then use a hair tie to wrap it around your shower head. Your steamy shower will create the most spa-like experience. Dim the lights and only use a salt rock night light to up the ambiance. I use Flamingo Estates body wash because I love the earthy smell.

When I get out I’ll use Primally Pure’s almond vanilla body butter and sculpt with The Skinny Confidential Body Sculptor. I’ve noticed such a difference in my cellulite and muscle tone since I started using it. And it just feels good after a warm shower. (I usually dry brush in the morning before I shower).

After this I’ll do my skincare in the warm light of the salt rock light while I listen to Louise Hay or a chime machine and take fish oil and Arrae Magnesium. Depending on what I had for dinner, I’ll also take Arrae’s bloat capsules. Their concoction of natural herbs just works. It makes such a difference if you’re prone to feeling puffy and bloated after meals.

Weighted neck pillow: My new addiction. You can warm it in the microwave, but I recently got a salon warmer and it works perfectly. So, at night I’ll grab Pique ginger digestive tea with some raw honey from the farmer’s market, a book, put my feet up and sit there with my warm neck pillow. It’s the most relaxing experience. If you’re looking for a good book I’ve recently read these and highly recommend: Green Lights, The Greatest Salesman in the World, and Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.

We go to bed early and I make sure I’m asleep by 10 pm. For us, the bedroom is for sleeping, so we don’t have a TV in ours.  As a little treat I always eat a piece of Hu dark chocolate almond crunch when I’m in bed. It’s become a ritual at the end of the night.

People always ask me how I have time for all of this. And I ask them right back, ‘How much time are you spending consuming other people’s content instead of focusing on your own life?’

Through all of this, my top tip for winding down is to end your night with positivity and only things that are inspiring and uplifting. I truly believe the last thing you consume before going to sleep affects your dreams and your subconscious so make sure you’re thoughtful about what you’re looking at.

YOU DO A LOT TO OPTIMIZE YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR NON-NEGOTIABLES?

Mouth taping at night. Mouth tape has changed my life. After using it every single night for a year I’ve noticed brighter eyes, a sculpted jawline, a stronger chin profile, and so much energy in the morning. And of course, the deepest sleep I’ve ever had. If you’re new to mouth tape, check out beginner tips on TheSkinnyConfidential.com to help you get used to nasal breathing.

Some other things I do because they make the biggest difference for me personally are: cold plunge, barrel sauna, ice rolling the second I get up, facial manipulation and scalp care (I always pull my hair up by the handful to stimulate my scalp and stretch the fascia in my face), dry brushing and hydration (electrolytes and colostrum, always). And, my absolute number one non-negotiable is moving my body. Whether I meet my trainer at the gym, do Pvolve or classical Pilates, or do a video at home, it gives me a clear head and makes a noticeable difference to my mental health.

There are also some really purposeful boundaries with the phone. I associate it with work so as soon as 7pm hits, I want to throw it across the room. Regarding time, I say no to a lot. Also, I don’t respond to messages right away. There are certain times in the day that I respond because I wait until I have time and can be more thoughtful. There’s so much pressure around responding right away and I believe we all deserve a bit of grace when it comes to replying to people. The content you consume matters too. I’m very careful what I’m consuming and it has to be inspiring, entertaining or informative.  And, sleeping is serious in our household. I get 8-9 hours a night and I like to optimize it.

I think of my wellness like my business. I don’t get it right every day, but it’s all about trying your best. When you feel good, you perform better.

New Chapters for These Fashion Entrepreneurs

Model and entrepreneur Nicole Trunfio opened her first brick-and-mortar store for BUMPSUIT at The Domain. Currently a six-month pop-up in the space formerly occupied by Skims, it’s planning to follow suit with a permanent location at The Domain, and more retail stores to come.  Nicole created BUMPSUIT during her third pregnancy to fulfill a need she found for stylish, versatile and comfortable clothes during pregnancy, post-partum and beyond. This store, designed by Will Fox of Fox Fox Studio, shows how much they’ve quickly grown, featuring all the BUMPSUIT collections: intimates and shapewear, loungewear, healing compression wear for recovery, occasion wear for events and baby showers, as well as the activewear and terry sweatsuits, all perfect for expecting moms, new moms – and any women who love to slip into something soft and flattering. The store also carries  the Armadillo baby carrier, has a marketplace and is designed to host the mom-and-baby community, complete with an interactive play and seating area, so look out for events there.

Kendra debuted Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott on South Congress, across the street from her flagship namesake store and it’s the store of your Cowgirl Chic dreams.  She says it’s a love letter to her home state of Texas. The store features fresh takes on vintage-inspired jewelry, boots, hats, and more. They’ve reimagined heritage Western styles with contemporary materials for styles that are worthy of the legendary yellow rose name, which Kendra tells Austin Lifestyle was inspired by the name of her ranch, Yellow Rose Ranch, the yellow rose of Texas and yellow being her favorite color, adding, “beyond that it’s very significant to me because the suffragettes wore yellow roses when they were trying to get their right to vote. So, it’s all about strong, trailblazing women with a lot of grit and determination, and that’s who we celebrate here at Yellow Rose.”

They’re also continuing the promise to give back as they grow, which has led to a partnership with the nonprofit Nest, sharing that through their shared commitment to empowering the next generation of makers, artisans, and entrepreneurs with the resources they need to succeed, they’re making sure the future of cowgirl culture is as rich as its past.

Stephanie has realized a dream years in the making, taking her three storefronts at Cassis Village in Tarrytown – Estilo, Estilo Men and Estilo Kids – and combining them under one roof to create a boutique department store. Inspired by the famous Fred Segal in Los Angeles, each space in the store has its own distinct feel, although those who have watched Stephanie grow her business over the last 20 years know the feel will always be local, a place you can go for personalized service and styling, where Stephanie  probably knows your name, and if she doesn’t, she will. There’s also a seating area in front where friends can catch up – or people can wait in comfort while their significant other shops through the ever-changing trove of inventory.

Estilo’s official grand opening party is forthcoming, but here’s a glimpse inside BUMPSUIT and Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott’ opening parties.

ATHLETES MAKING POINTS

Pro Volleyball players Juliann Faucette and Andrea Nucete-Elliott on life on and off the court
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BIRN PHOTOGRAPHY BY WESTON CARLS

Juliann is a three-time All-American who helped lead the University of Texas to three-straight NCAA Semifinals appearances and was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 2020. After stepping away from playing pro volleyball after a season in Italy in 2021, the mom of three is back in the pros, playing for team Austin in League One Volleyball (LOVB), a new pro league embarking on their first season this month. Their first game is January 8 in Houston and the first home match is January 15 at the HEB Center in Cedar Park.

Andrea made the switch to pro beach volleyball after moving here from Italy in 2013 and finding there wasn’t yet a pro indoor league to join. While she was looking she instead found her now husband, UT volleyball coach Jerritt Elliott, and in addition to being the most fashionably dressed person at the games, she plays a maternal role to anyone on the team who needs her.

Juliann and Andrea met at Juliann’s wedding. Andrea says, “I was Jerritt’s date and he told me, ‘You two are going to be friends, it’s like you were separated at birth,’” and adds,  “My nickname for Juliann is my Wonder Woman. Our friendship lays on the foundation of admiration and support without the need of everyday communication. She knows I am her biggest cheerleader and I know she is mine.”

Austin Lifestyle spent a morning with the women at The Kollective where they wowed us with their physical strength and

ability to cold plunge as if they were in a warm salt bath. “It’s because we’re athletes,” Andrea says. Afterwards they changed into looks to wear to game day styled by Stephanie Coultress O’Neill from Estilo boutique, we grabbed smoothies at Sunlife Organics and chatted about volleyball and life.

JULIANN FAUCETTE WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO AUSTIN?

The University of Texas. I got a scholarship to play volleyball for UT and ever since I knew I wanted to end up living in Austin.

YOU HAD QUITE A STORIED VOLLEYBALL CAREER AT UT, AND THEN AFTER COLLEGE YOU PLAYED PROFESSIONALLY OVERSEAS IN COUNTRIES LIKE JAPAN, CHINA, ITALY AND FRANCE?

When I graduated college in 2011 the only options for pro volleyball were overseas. I also played for the US National team during the summers of 2012-2015. Professional seasons would go from September-May and then I would play for the National team in May-Aug.

YOU HAD YOUR FIRST CHILD IN 2020 AND MOVED TO ITALY SIX MONTHS LATER, BUT MOVED BACK TO AUSTIN AFTER ONE SEASON. WAS THAT THE LAST TIME YOU PLAYED PROFESSIONALLY BEFORE LOVB?

My season finished in Italy in 2021. I decided to step away from volleyball again because it was too difficult to bring my family overseas and be a mother and an athlete in an environment that didn’t have the right resources for me and my family. I felt like I had no support from the league or the staff as a mother. Although I ended the season playing really well and in great shape after having my first child, I didn’t want that experience again. It was mentally taxing and I didn’t want to feel isolated and misunderstood as a mom and an athlete. At that time, there were still no options to continue my career in the states. Until now with LOVB.

HOW DID THINGS COME ABOUT WITH LOVB?

I was at a volleyball gala when I ran into a former USA coach of mine from 2008. He told me he was now working for LOVB and in charge of putting the teams together. He hinted that there may be an Austin team and asked if I would consider playing again. At this point, I had just had twins four months prior and I laughed. He was serious and told me to call him if I was interested. I thought on it for a month and realized that if I didn’t have to pack my family up and move, if I had a full year to get myself and my body ready, I could do this. I have all the help and support here in Austin and if I’m getting the opportunity for something this special in our sport, I’ve got to go for it. This was November of 2023. We checked back in January of 2024 to see how my body was holding up, and then they asked for some film of me practicing. I sent it over and they offered me a playing contract a few days later.

WHAT’S YOUR TRAINING ROUTINE BEEN LIKE GETTING BACK TO BEING A PRO ATHLETE?

I started this process knowing I had a full year to get into playing shape, so I really took my time. Post baby bodies are in need of careful repairing. Hip alignment, core stability, balance and building up my endurance were my focuses in the very beginning. My trainer (Anthony Brown) worked with me through my twin pregnancy, and when we began to push harder after we decided I would play again, all the pre-pregnancy and during-pregnancy work we did made the climb back to playing much more fluid. Before we began jumping and pounding on my joints, we made sure my body was ready for that by focusing on strength and endurance.

DO YOU ADHERE TO ANY KIND OF DIET WHEN YOU’RE TRAINING?

No, I tend to just eat a really balanced diet in general. I did however begin adding loads more protein once I knew I would

play again. I take my protein in lots of different ways, through shakes, bars, meats, beans, cottage cheese, etc. I don’t ever count calories or macros, I just focus on how I’m feeling. And, I’ll eat the same thing every single day for long periods of time. I am a creature of habit and do what works well for me. It helps take the stress out of it.

AND NOW YOU HAVE THREE KIDS! IS IT HARDER TO STAY DISCIPLINED WITH FITNESS AND NUTRITION WITH KIDS?

Definitely! I have had my fair share of missed workouts and not keeping up with eating right because that is life! Having kids has taken a lot of my perfectionism away and I have had to learn to roll with the punches. I do love bringing the kids to workouts and I try to cook healthy meals for us all so that they learn good habits early on. I believe in being the best example for them instead of telling them how to be healthy. It’s really cool to be able to show them firsthand.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT BEING A PRO VOLLEYBALL PLAYER?

I think my favorite part is the lifestyle of being a pro athlete. I love being disciplined, I love working hard, I love routines, so playing pro allows me to lean into my personality and grind. I also

love that you get to meet so many new amazing people. Some of my best friends are former teammates of mine through the years of playing.

PEOPLE SEE THE GLAMOROUS PARTS OF BEING A PRO ATHLETE, BUT WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE MOST CHALLENGING PARTS FOR YOU?

The most challenging part is the sacrifices I have had to make. Previously when volleyball was only accessible overseas, I would be in a foreign country alone for up to eight months of the year. I missed birthdays, weddings, births of my nieces and nephews, celebrations, etc. It was hard to be away from loved ones. Volleyball also is not a highly funded sport, so depending on where I played, facilities were poor, medical care was sparse and it wasn’t exactly what you’d think a pro athlete’s lifestyle would be.

YOU’RE A SINGLE MOM OF THREE, WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU DO FOR SELF-CARE/YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

I’m really lucky that my kids are great sleepers, so I get a couple of hours to myself every single night after they go down. During that time I like to take baths, read, watch a show, or journal. I also consider my time in the gym “me time”. My therapist taught me that everything can be considered mini vacations. My commute is an awesome time to reflect, listen to music as loud as I want or listen to a podcast. I also try to get a girls’ night once a month. I love to dress up and go all out for that.

DID YOU THINK YOUR VOLLEYBALL CAREER WOULD HAVE SUCH LONGEVITY?

I always thought that I had to finish my volleyball career before becoming a mom so I tried to stick to that model - but then I realized that I was capable of doing both, albeit difficult. I also didn’t know much about women’s bodies after pregnancy and just assumed that the stigma around postpartum and postbaby bodies was true - that you will never be as strong, as beautiful, or as athletic as you were before babies. Once I figured out that was not true, in fact it was the opposite for me, that’s when I knew I could keep going and keep pushing my body physically for as long as I decided,  given the circumstances were right for me and my babies.

ANDREA NUCETE ELLIOTT

YOU WERE INITIALLY A PRO INDOOR PLAYER, WHAT PROPELLED YOU TO SWITCH TO BEACH VOLLEYBALL?

Mainly the lack of professional leagues in the USA when I moved here for school.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEACH VOLLEYBALL?

I love the fact that beach volleyball is mentally tough. Your weaknesses, mental, physical and tactical are constantly exposed, you must deal with unforeseen circumstances like weather, different types of sand, heat, cold. It’s overall very physically and mentally demanding and it takes years to master the art of it. I love that.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN?

Six days a week.

DO YOU ADHERE TO A STRICT DIET?

As someone who has overcome 10 years of emotionally triggered bulimia, I’ve learned what my body needs and have tried my best to keep my system running on the best fuel I can. However, I love French fries and sweets.

YOU LOOK STRONG, INCREDIBLE AND SO CONFIDENT IN A BIKINI, - YOUR WORK UNIFORM! BUT, AS YOU SAID, YOU HAD AN EATING DISORDER AS A TEEN AND YOUNG ADULT THAT YOU GOT OVER – HOW DID YOU DO IT?

In retrospect, I should have sought the help of a professional. In reality, I’m a very stubborn person and when I decide to put

OF ADMIRA

“OUR FRIENDSHIP LAYS ON THE FOUNDATION
TION AND SUPPORT. SHE KNOWS I'M HER BIGGEST CHEERLEADER AND I KNOW SHE IS MINE.”  -ANDREA

my mind to something, my body will follow.  My distress levels were at a point of no return and my bulimia had gotten very much out of control. There was a very memorable moment for me where I believe I made the decision to stop and make a change forever.  I was crying and overwhelmed with guilt, feelings of self-loathing and all of the worst feelings that hating yourself and your body bring up. Then, I washed my hands and looked at myself in the mirror.  I was so sick of it, so fed up, so angry at myself, I felt like the ultimate loser, like someone so weak who

can’t even control the only things that are in her control.  So, I told myself out loud while pointing at the mirror ‘You are done.’  And I was.  After that time there were only a couple of times where I fell back. In most important life decisions I have the mirror conversation.

YOU HAD CHALLENGING TIMES GROWING UP, BUT YOU ALWAYS SEEM SO HAPPY AND POSITIVE. WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU DO FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH?

The things that I do or don’t do for my mental health have changed over the years and continue to do so. When I lived in Houston in my early 20s I used to go dance until my body couldn’t stand it anymore, music has always been cathartic for me.  It’s given harmony to my life since I was a child.  Competing is another one.

Academics and sports were an escape from my reality and they helped me stay focused and challenged me to improve and redirect my teenage anger.  They were my outlet and are still what keeps me sane today. I also love being able to take slow time for me, running errands or getting a massage.

YOU STARTED SHE IS ME MOVEMENT LAST YEAR. WHAT IS THAT AND WHAT IS THE GOAL?

She is Me is a mentorship program Jerritt and I started to facilitate self-discovery and entrepreneurship through real-life scenarios.  It’s a way to give back in a concrete way

that doesn’t involve money, but requires a high level of attention and dedication to an individual, donating the intangibles of time and knowledge. We help people discover their interests outside the sport they’ve been dedicating their lives to.

LET’S GO BACK, YOU WERE BORN IN VENEZUELA AND RAISED IN ITALY. WHAT LED YOU TO MOVE TO AUSTIN?

Initially, I moved to Houston in 2013 because I wanted to get to know my dad, whom I didn’t grow up with, in hopes of developing a relationship with him as an adult and to study neurosurgery.

AND THEN YOU MET JERRITT…

Yes, and Jerritt led me to move to Austin in 2015. Jerritt and I met because of the volleyball world. I was seeking to continue

my career as a professional volleyball player and all the information I could find (with my limited English) led me to send him a Facebook message saying, Italy volleyball help,’ to which he responded, “You are too old” (laughs).  That got it started.  Then I came to a game in November, we stayed in touch and on March 11, 2014 we went on our first date.  We have been together ever since.

JERRITT’S THE UT VOLLEYBALL COACH AND YOU SEEM TO BE THEIR BIGGEST CHEERLEADER! DO YOU ALSO GIVE THE GIRL’S TIPS?

I am a resource to those young women if they ever need it. I love them so much that my chest hurts and I want to see them succeed.  Even if I don’t have an official role within the team, I am around them if they are ever homesick and need a home-cooked meal, or if they have questions about ANYTHING.  Our home has an open-door policy; we want them to feel like they can always come to it if they need it.

AND YOU AND JERRITT OWN TIY (TIE IT YOURSELF), HOW DID THAT COME ABOUT AND HOW IS IT GOING?

TIY Products has been a wild ride.  Jerritt originally had the idea of creating a customizable hair tie that every hair type could use.

Due to his full-time job, he hadn’t had the time to dedicate to the business. I pivoted on the decision to pursue medical school, so I dedicated my time to TIY®. Thanks to the help of my husband and a couple of key mentors, it’s grown so much! It’s now a nationwide recognizable brand and I’m so proud of it. Jerritt is the endless business developer on TIY, his brain is so different than anyone I have ever met, and I am someone very disciplined and dedicated to creating a fun and kick-butt team, with an emphasis on women and women of color, to take TIY to the next level.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINERS SHARE A WORKOUT TO DO WITH WEIGHTS AT HOME

Karena Dawn co-founded fitness community and popular workout app Tone It Up. Sandy Brockman has been a personal trainer for the better part of two decades and currently sees private clients at the new state-of-the art Nutrabolt/C4 HQ. They both agree strength-training is a priority over cardio. “I think strength training needs to be your bread and butter and should be the bulk of your workouts. Cardio is great for mental and metabolic health, it should be done but no more that twice a week,” Sandy says. Karena adds, “I used to be a triathlete and marathon runner. Now, I love strength training mixed with walks and hikes outdoors.”

Austin Lifestyle joined Karena and Sandy for a workout at Nutrabolt where they demonstrated a strength-training workout comprised of four moves that can be done at home with a set of weights and a chair.

THE FOUR MOVES, SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS ON THE RIGHT ARE:

1. Goblet Squats

2. Shoulder Press

3. Curtsy Lunges

4. Bent Over Row

Do 5 rounds of 10 reps each 3-4 times/week.

FOR WEIGHT SANDY SUGGESTS:

Women:

• Beginners: 5 - 10lbs

• Intermediate: 10 - 15lbs

• Advanced: 20-30lbs

Men:

• Beginners: 10-15lbs

• Intermediate: 20 - 30lbs

• Advanced: 30-45lbs

• Rest as necessary for good form

She also recommends adding in sprints at the end, which can be done on a treadmill, bike or row machine, or sans equipment doing mountain climbers or burpees 30 seconds on with a minute rest for ten rounds.

Dr. Ling’s Magic Machine

Innate Beauty founder shares treatment that turns back the clock

Dr. Shirat Ling specializes in minimally invasive procedures with maximum results. She’s currently loving the Agnes RF, a machine that delivers what she calls The Baby Nip and Tuck. She’s one of only a few medical spas in the area that offer the treatment, and possibly the only Board-certified physician performing it in Austin.

“The minimally-invasive procedure bridges between resurfacing procedures and invasive surgical lower facelift results, without the risks of general anesthesia,” she says, explaining, “The micro-insulated needles precisely target and penetrate the area while transmitting RF energy to permanently reduce fat and help tighten skin. The micro-insulated needles are engineered at a precise depth to protect other structures of the skin and to help minimize downtime.”

Dr. Ling says The machine’s RF energy also “helps promote a more youthful appearance by reducing sagging skin. The versatile device addresses undereye fat pads, jowls, double chin, fat over nasolabial folds, superficial and deep wrinkles, and saggy brows.  It can also be used for acne, syringomas, sebaceous hyperplasia. It is safe for all skin tones and textures.” She says the Agnes RF accomplishes this because “the heat from RF treatment causes fat coagulation, tightens collagen fibers and stimulates fibroblasts to create collagen.”

Relatively new, Dr. Ling says she’s been watching this technology for a few years, to ensure the technology and results were consistent and safe and says everyone who has received it has been very happy with their results. She says she recommends the treatment to anyone with sagging skin, jowls, a double chin, herniated fat pads under the eyes, wrinkles or droopy brows and that some results will be evident immediately,

with continuing improvement of texture and tightness over the next few months. “Fat dissolution can take up to four months for full results, and may need additional treatments,” she says, adding, “In some cases, we combine it with micro-needling with Radiofrequency (Secret RF) to address surface texture and enhance the tissue lifting.

The treatment costs $500-$2500, depending on the concern and areas addressed and Dr. Ling says, “A single treatment can produce great results, and frequency (of how often you should

get the treatment) depends on how well the body creates and maintains collagen. The body will continue to lose collagen with normal aging, so doing these annually for maintenance is recommended. Additional treatments may be necessary for larger areas of fat, and also depends on patient compliance with proper diet and exercise, and use of effective skincare products.”

Longevity Hacks –for Your Dogs!

ROOTS INTEGRATIVE VETERINARY CARE

OWNERS ON EXTENDING YOUR PET’S LIFE

Biohacking has become increasingly common for humans looking to live beyond the average lifespan and be healthy on the way there. Yet, although we grumble about the often heart-wrenchingly shorter lives of our dogs, biohacking pets’ health is less common. Roots Integrative Veterinary Care is changing that.

Root’s mission is simple yet transformative: to truly improve the lives of pets and their families. By blending the best of Eastern and Western medicine, they go beyond treating symptoms to uncover the root causes of illness. This integrative approach allows them to craft personalized care plans that nourishes health and wellness at every level—Root Cause, Root Nutrition, Root Wellness – leading to healthier, and often longer, lives for furry family members.

Founded by the dynamic duo Dr. Adam Lassin and Jessica Lassin, who bring together complementary strengths to redefine veterinary care, Roots has been serving the Austin community for four years. Jessica leverages her extensive experience in emergency and specialty veterinary medicine, along with her business acumen and entrepreneurial drive, to ensure the clinic operates smoothly and efficiently. Adam, a licensed veterinarian with over 14 years of experience, brings a wealth of knowledge in both Western and integrative medicine. His expertise in acupuncture, herbal therapy, and nutrition—combined with a lifelong passion for animal welfare—drives Roots’ commitment to compassionate, cutting-edge care.

Their philosophy centers on a holistic, human approach to pet care, combining traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, acupuncture, herbal therapy, and more with the science-backed precision of Western medicine. Here they share habits they say can help your pet live longer, healthier lives.

• Feed a Diet of Unprocessed, Whole, Real Food: Nutrition is the cornerstone of health. Processed pet foods can contain additives, by-products, and low-quality ingredients that may contribute to chronic inflammation and long-term health issues. Choosing a fresh, whole, species-appropriate balanced diet that provides the nutrients your pet needs while reducing exposure to unnecessary fillers and potential food intolerances and/or sensitivities. We know and think of food as medicine itself—what goes into your pet’s body matters every day.

• Be Proactive with Gut Health: A balanced gut biome is essential for long-term health and longevity. Using gut flora mapping, we can assess your pet’s unique microbiome and recommend targeted nutrition or supplements to optimize digestion, strengthen the immune system, and reduce chronic inflammation. This personalized approach supports both preventative and therapeutic care.

• Maintain a Healthy Weight: Portion control and regular exercise are essential to prevent obesity, which can lead to numerous

health issues, including diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Keep your pet active and at their ideal weight to improve their overall quality of life.

• Be Proactive with Preventative Care: Regular exams and lab work allows you to detect potential health issues before they become serious. Stay on top of routine wellness exams, and work closely with your veterinarian to address any changes in your pet’s health.True preventative medicine.

• Use Vaccines Responsibly:  Only vaccinate your pet when appropriate for their age, health, and lifestyle. Consider titer testing to measure immunity levels, avoiding unnecessary vaccinations. Never vaccinate pets who are sick, have underlying conditions, immune mediated diseases, cancer, and/or are on immune-suppressing medications. This approach minimizes stress on the immune system while keeping your pet protected.

• Provide Plenty of Love and Enrichment: A happy, mentally stimulated pet is a healthier pet. Regular interaction, playtime, and affection contribute to emotional well-being, which positively impacts health.

A Facial for every stage

Master Esthetician and BelVer Studio owner Katya Khayutin shares her expertise with Austin Lifestyle

Katya decided to move from NYC to Austin with her husband during the pandemic and says, “Austin was our sole choice because we loved it so much and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. The city’s vibrant culture and community truly resonate with us.” Spring 2024 she opened facial spa BelVer Studio which has quickly become a local favorite, and the reason why is no surprise. Katya has roots in esthetics. Her mom is an esthetician and she says, “It has always been a dream of mine to open my own dedicated space for facial treatments.” When she goes to work massaging your face, it’s nearly impossible not to drop into bliss. Her facials truly help one glow from the inside and out.  She shared non-invasive but effective facials she’d recommend for every stage of life, all of which are offered at BelVer and incorporate various European facial techniques.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A FACIAL SUITED TO PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT STAGES IN LIFE?

Each stage of life brings unique skincare needs and understanding these can help you maintain a glowing complexion.

In your 20s, focus on prevention and keeping your skin’s natural resilience intact. A HydroDiamond facial is a fantastic option; it deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates, leaving your skin radiant. Microdermabrasion is also great for gently removing dead skin cells, giving you that smooth, polished look.

As you transition into your 30s, you might notice a few fine lines. This is when hydration and toning become really important. Microcurrent therapy can be a game-changer—it uses low-level electrical currents to lift and tone your facial muscles. LED light therapy is perfect for stimulating collagen production and evening out your skin tone.

When you hit your 40s, hormonal changes can affect firmness and hydration. An Oxylight facial, which combines negative ions therapy with ultrasound technology is rejuvenating and refreshing. You might also want to try a buccal massage; it releases muscle tension and lifts your facial contours.

In your 50s, addressing dryness and deeper lines becomes key. Radiofrequency treatments stimulate collagen and elastin for improved firmness, while chemical peels can enhance skin texture and reduce fine lines and age spots.

In your 60s and beyond, the focus shifts to maintaining skin health and addressing deeper lines. Microneedling creates tiny

micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production for firmer skin. This procedure is little more invasive than the rest but gives great results when performed correctly.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECOMMEND PEOPLE GET FACIALS?

For optimal skin health, I recommend getting a facial every 4 to 6 weeks. This frequency allows the skin to rejuvenate and adapt to various environmental factors and changes in your skincare routine.

IF PEOPLE USE ONE PRODUCT REGULARLY ON THEIR FACE, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND IT BE?

If there’s one product I’d suggest making a staple in your skincare routine, it’s a good serum. Serums are like the superheroes of skincare;

they pack a punch with concentrated active ingredients that really target your skin’s specific needs while keeping it hydrated. Biologique Recherche’s Serum Matriciel Visage is amazing for giving your skin that lifted, toned look and smoothing out fine lines—perfect for anyone wanting to enhance firmness and elasticity. Omorovicza’s Daily Vitamin C serum is fantastic for brightening and protecting your skin. It’s loaded with antioxidants that fight off early signs of aging and help you achieve that radiant glow.

ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO ADD?

I really want to highlight how important it is to listen to your skin and seek out professional guidance. Here’s a fun fact: your skin renews itself about every 28 days, which means it’s constantly changing! This makes it even more crucial to tailor your skincare routine to what your skin needs at any given moment. At BelVer, we’re all about helping each client find the right treatments and products for their unique skincare journey. We run a facial special every month for new clients who want to try out our services. It’s a fantastic way to kick off your journey with us and discover what works best for you.
