Essentials to pack in your (clear) bag for tailgate season
College football season has kicked off! Here are the items we won’t be caught without while putting our "horns up" at DKR on game day.
It’s still hot in Austin, so hydration is key. Pack vitamin and electrolyte drink mix packets to add to water. We love Bye-Bye Weekend for its additional digestive and detoxification benefits.
Make sure your devices stay charged through the tailgate and game with a personalized power bank from Classy Chargers. They add to your game day style when seen through your clear bag.
Hold it all in a clear, stadium-approved bag. While Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium allows clear bags up to 12"x6"x12", other stadiums and venues have different size requirements. Taylor Gray's Clear Stadium Purse is 8"x4.5"x3.5".

AUSTIN'S "LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD" REVOLUTION
The House of eMaGi owner Cleva Kah
“"I have come to realize that I am alright with who I am, and it has been a liberating journey of peace and self-discovery."
Growing up as an awkward, tall, super skinny boy was not easy for Austin designer Cleva Kah. He was teased. He faced body image issues. It led him to layer clothes to conceal his insecurities.
A transformative moment came when he went to a John Casablanca modeling audition in support of his girlfriend and was unexpectedly offered a contract. The experience reshaped his self-image and taught him to embrace his unique physique.
"Growing up in a low-income household, I never had the latest brand name clothing or designer labels that most of my classmates seemed to flaunt, and to be honest, designer labels were not a priority to me," Kah said. "I learned to thrift shop to find affordable pieces that I could mix and match to create trendy outfits. In my final year of high school, I was voted best dressed by my peers."

In 2003, he founded The House of eMaGi, a clothing boutique that stands as a beacon of self-expression and self-love. Central to its mission is the "Look Good, Feel Good" initiative, which empowers individuals to embrace their unique beauty and build self-confidence through fashion.
"I have come to realize that I am alright with who I am," Kah said, "and it has been a liberating journey of peace and self-discovery."

FINDING A TOUCH OF GLAM IN EVERYDAY DESIGN
ARTICLE BY ALLISON GIBESON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.
Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”
“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”
This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.
When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.
“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.
In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.
“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.
To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas
and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.
Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.
Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.
MAKING COLOR, TEXTURE AND PATTERN STAND OUT
Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?
HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS:
Find a base color with pops of other colors.
“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”
If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.
Consider wallpaper.
“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.
Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.
Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.
SUPPORTING austin's MUSICIANS
Austin's businesses are heavily invested in our community. One of those businesses is the personal injury law firm FVF Law, which is not only dedicated to education, transparency and putting clients first but also partners with dozens of nonprofits around town. One of these nonprofits is the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, also known as HAAM.
WHAT DREW FVF LAW TO HAAM AND ITS MISSION?
One of our strongest partnerships is with HAAM. If Austin wants to stay the live music capital of the world, we must take care of our musicians. The team at HAAM works tirelessly to do just that, leveraging every dollar donated into seven dollars of health care benefits for its members.
TELL US ABOUT HAAM DAY.
HAAM Day is HAAM’s biggest fundraiser of the year and has even become an official holiday for FVF. We soft-close the office so our team can volunteer and enjoy the 250+ free live music performances all over town. We’ve donated over 150 hours of our time to the event and have been proud sponsors since 2018. We cannot wait for HAAM Day 2024 on Tuesday, Sept. 24

OUT OF NOWHERE, ACTOR BILL MURRAY INSPIRES AUSTIN-BASED APPAREL BRAND THAT BEARS HIS NAME
“CINDERELLA STORY”
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC SHAUGHNESSY, JIM MILLER, TOM RAFALOVICH
Considering our vibrant, innovative city, known for its artistic, welcoming and unconventional spirit, it’s no surprise that the lifestyle and apparel brand William Murray has called Austin home since it was founded in 2016.
and unique designs that reflect the Murray family’s comedic flair as well as their love of the game.
Bill Murray and his five brothers grew up caddying in Winnetka, Ill., a family tradition picked up from their
"THE MORE RELAXED YOU ARE, THE BETTER YOU ARE AT EVERYTHING.”
The company has early ties to Austin-based humor website theCHIVE and has continued to find success by blending the laid-back, fun side of golf with the quirky charm and spirit of its namesake, iconic actor Bill Murray.
Years back, the whimsical actor and cultural icon shared the phrase, “The more relaxed you are, the better you are at everything” — words that fast-became the brand’s unofficial mantra.
William Murray also rode the sport’s evolution of embracing a more inclusive energy, one in which anybody and everybody is now invited to join the club, regardless of skill level or personal style.
“While a huge part of the game plan was to bring a fresh and lighthearted perspective to golf and lifestyle attire, our brand was equally as focused on creating unique performance apparel and the quest for a perfect blend of quality and personality,” said Brandon Barrett, William Murray co-founder and CEO.
William Murray’s product line offers a lineup of bold prints, vibrant colors

Stories have circulated for years regarding Bill Murray life-bombing moments, be it joining a random kickball game, DJ’ing at a stranger’s birthday gathering, crashing a couple’s engagement photos or giving life advice on camera at a bachelor party. Some of these antics have since even woven their way into Austin’s pop culture history.
One time, Bill famously crashed a local house party, playing roadie — and tambourine — for the Band. More recently, a night out with the William Murray team featured a stop at The Belmont to show support to fellow Chicagoan and rapper Lupe Fiasco, where it was reported that the actor called for two encores.

platforms that his one-on-one with Murray provided some “amazing words of encouragement,” proving that even superstars and others in entertainment aren’t immune to their own Bill Murray story.
In the past decade, the Murray brothers have spent time in Austin focused on business and posting up at the company’s East Sixth Street headquarters, where some well-timed humor and family stories have served as inspiration and motivation for a passionate, creative group of Austinites.
William Murray’s close-knit local team is responsible for creating and constantly refreshing successful men’s and women’s apparel lines, which include an assortment of performance-wear polos and wrinkle-free button downs, lightweight outerwear, cozy loungewear, hats, T-shirts, shorts and a bevy of accessories.
Many of the Murray brothers’ classic films have sparked creative ideas and original designs over the years. The brand has also found local inspiration partnering with some Austin-themed businesses — most-notably a handful of collaborations with Tito’s Handmade Vodka on

some custom, limited-edition polos featuring both brands’ logos and other subtle Austin and Lone Star State nods.
“The brand embodies the spirit of and best of Austin in its creativity, inclusiveness and unconventional ways,” Barrett said.
“William Murray continues to challenge traditional norms in the golf and apparel space with a product line that is as fun as it is functional, while taking pride in thriving as a brand driven to make the greatest game more accessible and enjoyable for all who are along for the ride.”
As the golf apparel and lifestyle space continue to evolve, William Murray will strive to remain at the forefront of the movement, bringing a fresh look, attitude and energy to the industry.

MARATHON KIDS’ ZILKER PARK RELAY EVENT BRINGS FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
In the age of endless screen time, kids across the country are failing to meet the one hour of exercise recommended for their physical and mental health. Marathon Kids, a nonprofit started in Austin, aims to end this trend by teaching children how fulfilling running can be and how exciting it is to set and exceed goals through hard work and persistence.

Construction. The event will include 200- and 400-meter kid dashes, an adult relay race, costume competitions, a post-race DJ party and a biergarten sponsored by Titos for those 21 and up. Children who participate will also score a free meal from Tacodeli. Registration is still open, and all proceeds will support Marathon Kids.
“This event is cool in the sense that it has this wacky, pop-up, kind-of-underground feel to it. There’s really nothing else like it,” said Jasmine Adgerson, Marathon Kids’ community engagement manager. “It’s overall just a really fun time.”
The nonprofit is made up of determined volunteers — often coaches, teachers or parents — and dedicated students who use the Marathon Kids app to log each lap run. Each child can set their own daily goal, a system that teaches them to develop healthy habits and, most importantly, stick to them.
“When you encourage kids to do this from an early age, they can take these habits on to their adult lifestyles,” Adgerson said.
“It shows that kids can do so much more than we give them credit for.”
By the end of each semester, most participants have logged three or four marathons worth of laps. Last year, participants in the Austin area ran a total of 18,310 marathons all together, totaling nearly 480,000 miles.
“It shows that kids can do so much more than we give them credit for,” Adgerson said.

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE
ARTICLE BY EMILY FOSTER INTERIORS
INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
GOOD LIGHTING
It is imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. A room needs a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, and I see this so many times, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I always add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Also, candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
GREAT TEXTURES
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
DECLUTTERING
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.

SUMMER END of CRAB BOIL
ARTICLE BY LEANN PARKER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.

White Pasta Bowls
Individual Ceramic Butter Warmers
Linen Napkins
Woven Placemats
Galvanized Tavern Mugs
Crab Napkin Rings
Crab Salt & Pepper
Crab Bottle Opener
Parchment Paper
Paper-Sail Centerpiece (instructions found in Martha Stewart’s book “Handmade Holiday Crafts” page 248) set in a galvanized bucket filled with white sand.
Blue Taper Candles placed in 8oz jelly jars filled with white sand.
Glass Bottles labeled “Let’s Sail Away.” Inside, roll up a handwritten note, joke or riddle for guests to enjoy a chuckle or conversation starter.
Large Galvanized Tray overlaid with parchment paper to hold the crab boil feast.
Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil and add crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and corn until cooked. Strain water and serve on a large galvanized tray, newspaper or parchment paper – enjoy your meal with guests, family style!
Give each guest a bowl of garlic butter for dipping as well as lemons for squeezing (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with twine to avoid seeds).
Include special beverages and desserts such as a tiered lemon cake or frozen treat to beat the heat.
