How much time do you spend thinking about what you're going to wear each morning? I'm an all or nothing kind of girl... its two minutes out the door, in the easiest thing to pull on, without a backwards glance in the mirror, or its sequins and bright clashing colors, retro preferably, like this 1980s spar kling fiesta of a dress I'm wearing in my Editor's photo, gleefully discovered at Revival Vintage here in Austin by a friend who saw it and knew it was very me - which I'm choosing to take as a compliment! Do you have a style you're known for? A look you've grown into? Or are you still working out what it is, creating a way to express yourself? Well, help is at hand. For fashionistas and future fashionistas, style mavens and tracksuit devotees alike, this issue is full of great clothes, gorgeous designs and wonderful Austinites who are working their individuality into their ward robes in the most wonderful ways - they have lots of tips and suggestions for readers, too. Ask a woman her favorite things and shoes and wine are likely to place high on the list. So it was with Jennifer Parkman, who married two of her favorite things and brought them to life (along with her best friend Cynthia McMillioan) with Blue Suede Shoes + Wine.
The shoes and wines are curated from all over, but Jennifer and Cynthia give a lot of love to local brands throughout the store. The stock of cider and beer are from Austin Eastciders and Austin Beerworks, they offer cheese boards made with Antonelli’s Cheese and serve fresh coffee from Austin Roasting Company. There’s jewelry from local designers for sale and candles from Deuxmoon, owned by sisters in Austin. We caught up with Jennifer to learn more about the women behind Blue Suede.
Located on South 1st Street next to newly opened Picnik, Blue Suede is a women’s shoe and acces sories boutique where you can shop, enjoy a bev erage and host a happy hour in the lounge. It can accommodate 30-40 people!

The Dorothy piece was commissioned from Ashley Longshore
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU AND CYNTHIA MEET?
We met 10 years ago when we played tennis against each other and Cynthia called me out on my foot faults as if we were playing Wimbledon instead of recreational tennis! Days later we met up for drinks with mutual friends and laughed about the ridiculousness of the entire thing and became fast friends.
Open since January, Blue Suede features notable designers such as Dolce Vita, Seychelles, Matisse, Donald Pliner, Yellow Box, Tamaris, and more, in addition to being the exclusive carrier in Austin for shoe brands including Jeffrey Campbell.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE OWNING THE SHOE STORE?
WHAT LED YOU TO OPENING BLUE SUEDE?
MCMILLIOANCYNTHIAANDPARKMANJENNIFER
When I lived in Chicago I loved going to Lori’s Shoes, a shoe boutique where all of the sizes were out and you could try on anything without having to ask someone to get your size. Lori’s Shoes was always packed with friends having fun trying on shoes and I would think, “If you just added wine to this…”
We were both mainly stay-at-home-moms, but I was formerly a Licensed Veterinary Technician and Cynthia did some side gigs as a realtor and home builder with her husband. WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NAME? It came to me on a long car ride from Colorado back to Austin. Literally, it just popped in my head and I loved it. It has nothing to do with Elvis!

Creating an incredible space where you get to work with your best friend. And, seeing people come in the door with this “wow” look on their face as they take it all in. AND YOU HOST WINE TASTINGS? Yes, every 6-8 weeks. They’re $20/per son and if you spend $75 or more on any merchandise in the store, the $20 fee goes toward that.

ANYTHING YOU’D LIKE TO ADD?
WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART ABOUT OPENING AND OWNING A NEW STORE?
Figuring it out! There are so many variables you don’t consider because you don’t know what you don’t know. From design and build out to choosing every single item for sale in the store, we’ve had to remind each other that we will always be able to figure it out.
WHAT’S BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART?
Our favorite quote is “we will figure it out.” In the beginning, we found ourselves saying it so frequently that it became a joke, so we ended up having it tattooed on the side of our arms. Now, whenever some one says “we will figure it out” everyone on our team holds up their arms.
Just that as two best friends who get to go to work together every day, it is not lost on us how fortunate we are. We took something we are passionate about and combined it with a bunch of ridiculously talented female friends who were willing to help us get it off the ground and make us look good. Add in our talented staff who work with us every day at Blue Suede, fur ther creating the space we had envisioned, and we are nothing but grateful. Blue Suede is located at 1600 S. First St., Ste,. 120, Austin, TX and offers two hours complimentary parking in the Willa Garage. SHANI DARDEN RETINOL REFORM: Shani is a facialist and this product is one of my alltime favorite beauty products and a secret of many Hollywood stars. It’s a gentle exfoliate that leaves skin feeling fresh and transformed and is an amazing alternative to other anti-aging products.

TINT: Monika is a fellow makeup artist that I’ve known and respected for years. I’m so into her Liquid Flush Cheek tint, a new formula that I just discovered. It is easy to use and glides on giving a sheer wash of color and leaving skin looking fresh and hydrated. Her product line is cruelty-free, fragrance-free, vegan and clean.
THE LEIA ULTRAFLESH BLENDER: This really unique and somewhat sexual looking beauty tool went super viral on TikTok. It was designed by fellow makeup artist Beau Nelson and is made from a futuristic-feeling polymer that mimics skin on skin contact. It doesn’t absorb any makeup, is super easy to clean, is sustainable and hygienic and with it I use less than half of the makeup I normally would.
From doing her friends makeup during lunch period at school to doing Jessica Alba’s makeup for the cover of InStyle, Lauren Andersen has always known she loved doing makeup. Known for creating beautiful natural looks for a palette of women who have included Jessica Alba, Eva Mendes, Billie Lourd, Zoey Deutch, Abigail Spencer and more, the now Austin-based artist makes any person her brush touches feel prettier. You can check out her tutori als from subtle to making a statement on her Instagram @laurenandersen. Here Lauren shares four products she’s loving right now:
ILIA’S SUPER SERUM SKIN TINT SPF 40 FOUNDATION: This serum is my go-to foundation these days. It has a lightweight dewy coverage that leaves skin looking and feeling fresh. It also has an SPF of 40 and anti-aging ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid and plant-based Squalene. Your skin will be beautiful, protected and better for using it.

Talking Shop with Stephanie Coultress O'Neill Nearly 20 years in retail and her passion & ambition still burn bright LOCAL LIMELIGHT | STYLE + BEAUTY22

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO OWN A CLOTHING BOUTIQUE? In my mid 20’s when I began to open my private practice in child and family therapy, I decided that I loved working with my clients and I enjoyed helping them find solutions and resolutions, but I found myself emotionally drained every day.

WERE YOU EVER A PSYCHOLOGIST? I was a child and family therapist. I worked as a non-profit therapist for Lifeworks for a few years, then I started my own private practice.
If you’ve ever needed something to wear for an occasion in Austin, you probably know Stephanie Coultress O’Neill. If not, you should. She’s the familiar face found at fashion bou tique estilo nearly every day for more than 15 years – in the store’s original location on 2nd Street downtown and in its current home in Tarrytown since 2015. Pre-pandemic Stephanie - who went to high school in North Austin and undergraduate and graduate school at the University of Texas- leased a neighboring store to open estilo men (which looks like a gorgeous curated closet) and she recently took over the store on the other side where estilo kids is currently being built. As Stephanie takes over a corner of Tarrytown and a large percentage of the Austin fashion retail market, we caught up with her to reflect on nearly two decades as a business owner and a stylist (after a career as a family therapist!), what’s coming up, and life when she’s not at the store.
WHERE IN AUSTIN DID YOU GROW UP? In Northwest Austin. In high school I worked at The Oasis and there was barely any develop ment in that area. It’s mind blowing to see how much it’s changed.

WHAT DID YOU STUDY IN COLLEGE? I stud ied Psychology. I’ve always loved people and understanding the dynamics of relationships and communication.
24
WHEN YOU OPENED THE FIRST ESTILO, WHAT WAS YOUR HOPE FOR IT? I wanted to be a specially curated space that was a one stop shop for clients.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION?
WHEN DID ESTILO FIRST OPEN? We were supposed to open in Oct of 2004, but due to construction the opening was delayed and we ended up opening the doors June 2005. However, I had already committed to Holiday inventory for that season, so I did what any entrepreneur would do, I sold all of my living room furniture and set up racks in my one-bedroom condo and had private shopping parties to launch “Estilo” and sell the inventory. I was able to keep my cash flow going and not tarnish the new relationships that I established with clothing brands.
When I had my existential crisis in my mid- 20s and I couldn’t decide if I really had a “passion” for being a therapist I thought about the elements of my job that I loved. It was the people and prob lem solving. I had always had a “passion for fashion” so when I thought long and hard about what I could envision myself doing and loving, it was owning a clothing store. I loved the idea of having clients that I get to work with every day and help ing them find their perfect ensemble. So, I decided to work part-time at a local bou tique as a sales associate, which was right on West 6th St., while I still saw clients part-time. I loved it. I was in my element. I decided that I needed to work full-time and stop seeing my clients to gain the full experience. I moved up from sales asso ciate to Manager, to Buyer to Director of Operations, and was able to learn all the aspects of owning your own store. After three years of experience, it was the per fect time to launch estilo.
WHAT PRECIPITATED THE MOVE TO THE CURRENT LOCATION? I had my first daugh ter in 2011 and second in 2014. As a mother of two, I found myself in the small neigh borhood shopping centers near our home a lot. At the time, there was a toy store and a men’s clothing store, but no women’s clothing store, yet the shopping center was full of women shopping. When a friend told me that a store in Casis Village was about to announce that they were closing, we contacted the store owner, who gave us the landlord’s information. We met with him on a Friday, pulled together a presen tation over the weekend and were able to negotiate a letter of intent the week after. We open at 8 am because so many of our clientelle are already in the shopping cen ter starting their days at 7:40 am school drop off – across the street!

WHEN DID THE MEN’S STORE OPEN?
November 2019, right before the pandemic! We had sold men’s clothing when we were downtown but didn’t initially in Tarrytown to not compete with another men’s cloth ier in the shopping center. When they announced their retirement, we jumped on the opportunity to bring curated contem porary men’s clothing to the area.

WHO’S SOMEONE YOU’D LOVE TO STYLE? Emma Stone. I hear she is a local now.
“After having been through two recessions, a pandemic and two locations, I am incredibly grateful for my clients’ support and loyalty.” estilo kids is currently under construction 26
SOME CREATIVES ENJOY THE ART MORE THAN THE BUSINESS SIDE, DO YOU ENJOY THE BUSINESS SIDE OF OWNING BUSI NESSES? I enjoy both. Obviously the business side is more stressful, but it’s so important. I love me some spreadsheets. Google docs have become my best friend. I wake up every morning and check finan cial accounts before I get out of bed most mornings. You have to know that side of the business and always know your numbers.

WHEN DID YOU START STYLING PEOPLE?
WHAT’S THE GOAL WITH ESTILO NOW? It’s my dream to have a retail space for the entire family. HOW DOES ESTILO DO ON THE WEBSITE AND APP? The pandemic was beneficial for my online business. I was very grateful to have a strong website when it happened and it brought a wider audience to our site. Over the last two years we’ve also been featured in a few Netflix shows and that brought a lot of attention to the website as well. HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED STARTING AN ESTILO ORIGINAL LINE? Yes, I did have a basics, organic cotton line years ago. I may revisit that again.

WHAT IS THE ESTILO OUTLET? It was a great opportunity for us to literally find an outlet for inventory. It’s all past sea son product that is discounted 50-75 per cent off or more. This resulted from the pandemic because I had excess inventory to sell and this was the perfect concept for that. It’s the best outlet for our past season product.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT OWN ING ESTILO? I love the artistry that goes into fashion, curating collections, and of course working with our clients.
|
I have always styled my clients at estilo. That’s my favorite part of my job. I love the creativity of putting together an outfit for specific occasions. I strongly believe there is a huge correlation with confidence and your outfit. If you love what you’re wear ing, you’ll walk into any moment stronger and more confident.

WHO’S THE ESTILO CUSTOMER? Some of my favorite experiences with customers are when I work with three generations of family at one time and everyone finds something they love. We try to offer a variety of options for clients, from casual to cocktail, last minute or plan ning in advance.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS A GOOD STYLIST SHOULD KNOW? Meet your client where your client is at. It is our job to help them find their own per sonal style, while helping them try pieces they may have never pulled for themselves.
WHAT’S BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Honestly, I am so grateful to have become a premier clothing destina tion in Austin. After having been through two recessions, a pandemic and two locations, I am incredibly grateful for my clients’ support and loyalty. 27|
CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/AUSTINTXSEPTEMBER 2022
WOULD YOU LIKE FOR THEM TO TAKE OVER THE FAMILY BUSINESS ONE DAY? I would love for them to carry on the brand but more importantly I want them to do something that they’re passionate about and love their career as much as I do.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN MARRIED? Todd and I met in 2002 in Austin, he proposed in 2007 and we were married in 2009. We were the first couple to have a wedding reception on the patio of The Long Center! It’s crazy to look back at pictures and see how different the skyline looked at the time.
HOW MUCH DOES TODD HELP WITH YOUR BUSINESS? He started helping me more as he launched Concierge Closet. His background is in software consulting so he tends to focus on back office solutions. He now helps me with some of the men’s buying as well.
ARE YOUR DAUGHTERS INTO FASHION? They both like clothing in different ways, have learned a lot about business and see that it’s seven days a week and a lot goes into it behind the scenes. They both do seem to have the entrepreneur flare and always come up with fun ideas for businesses.
HOW MUCH DO YOU HELP WITH CONCIERGE CLOSET? The idea for Concierge Closet came from the customers of estilo. I constantly heard customers complaining about not having enough closet space and no time to do anything about it. So, I’m definitely a con stant referral engine for the business and we talk a lot about how it should grow and best service customers.

Touring artist studios during East Austin Studio Tour had a last ing effect on me as a teen and I aspired to have my own studio in East Austin one day - and I now do! “Gardening takes me back to my roots, growing up on a farm in Illinois, so I love that this place is a two-minute drive from my house. Tending to flowers feels good for my soul, relaxing, soaking in the earth. One of my favorite things about Texas is the wildflowers on the roadside every Spring like a colorful carpet. I also loved my big prickly pear outside my first family home here in Austin. These earrings remind of it! It made me so happy, huge and flowering bright yellow every year.”
MATILDA: “The people that work here are really nice. I like sitting on the steps, or the wall, under the tree with my friends on a hot night, having their homemade ice cream with a fun cookie in the shape of a cactus or Longhorn. The artwork is cute to take photos in front of with my friends.”
“I feel so fortunate, as a foodie, to live in a place like Austin because nowhere else in the US compares for variety and quality. I eat out a lot - too much probably - and it is always a hard decision to decide where to go. I love coming to Taquero Mucho because it still feels very much Old Austin, which is getting harder and harder to find these days. It’s low key but cute, it has lots of personality but it doesn’t try too hard. It has its own vibe - and the chips and queso are awesome.”

Highlights to the scalp sometimes sliced and sometimes woven are back along with lightening natural bases with base breaks. Think 90’s Kate Moss super model vibes!! // 04 MONEY PIECE: We’re still seeing that bright face frame (money piece) we have been seeing just a little more blended now. The bright face frame piece should spill onto the hair for a more subtle framing. // 05 GLAM CURLS are back! 02/03 0506 04

Fall Hair
Think that not so beachy vibe! This is I’m trying hard and I want to look like it vibe! It’s best done by curling from the ends up with a 1 1/2 curling iron to make a nice round curl. Setting sprays like Davines medium hairspray and Randco Flexible Hold are great for this look. // 06 WE HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOU BRUNETTES!! Balayage for brunettes is still the way to go! You get dimensions with a softness at the root for a lovely low-maintenance color. But beware brunettes -you have to be ok with warmth if you go this route. It’s going to happen, and it’s beautiful when it does! 34
