November Brings People Together with Gratitude and Love

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As the autumn leaves settle and November reminds us to slow down, I find myself reflecting on just how grateful I am to be part of the Greater Asbury Park community. Gratitude feels especially powerful this time of year, and for me, it begins right here at home. Giving back to the community and reaching out to friends and family that were out of reach during the summer. Autumn brings us together with a warmth fueled with compassion and love.

Every day, I am inspired by the spirit of this place, the creativity that flows through our streets, the resilience and dedication of our small businesses, the generosity of neighbors helping neighbors. From the music that makes our city unique to the simple joy of a smile exchanged on a downtown street, these moments remind me of how fortunate we are to share this amazing community.

The autumn season is about more than just giving thanks, it’s about recognizing the connections that shape our lives. I am grateful for each of you, our readers, our local leaders, our artists, our families. All who contribute to the vibrancy of Greater Asbury Park. Together, we make this more than a town, we make it a home.

Wishing you and your loved ones a warm, joyful, and gratitude-filled November.

With appreciation and gratitude,

ASBURY PARK EATS

Not many beach towns can touch Asbury Park's culinary culture

When Travel + Leisure crowned Asbury Park the Best Beach Town in America, the honor didn’t just celebrate the legendary music scene or the mix of boardwalk nostalgia and indie creativity. It also recognized something locals have known all along: Asbury Park has become one of the most exciting culinary destinations on the Jersey Shore. Walk down Cookman Avenue on a summer evening and you’ll feel it instantly. The air hums with live music spilling out of bars, but it’s the aromas that stop

you in your tracks. Wood-fired sourdough pizzas at Talula’s, brasserie fare at Pascal & Sabine, fresh sushi from Taka, rooftop cocktails at AP Rooftop, and the smoky scent of ribs from Mutiny BBQ all blend together, creating a delicious soundtrack of their own. It’s proof that Asbury Park’s cultural revival isn’t just about art and music—it’s about food.

From Brunch to Boardwalk Bites Mornings here often begin at Cardinal Provisions, a café that redefined the Asbury brunch scene with imaginative

twists on classics. Whether it’s a lox toast piled high with pickled onions or a seasonal salad topped with vibrant local produce, the menu feels fresh, playful, and unmistakably Asbury. For those chasing something more old-school, Frank’s Deli is still the gold standard, serving pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwiches to generations of locals and beachgoers alike. By afternoon, the boardwalk calls. Seafood shines at spots like the Iron Whale, where ocean views frame lobster rolls and tacos that lean modern but comforting. Just steps away, newcomers like Palmetto channel Southern

coastal flavors, while high above the boardwalk, AP Rooftop offers Mediterranean-inspired small plates and a panoramic view of the Atlantic. With fireplaces glowing and the ocean breeze sweeping through, it’s one of the most unforgettable ways to savor a sunset in Asbury.

As day turns to night, downtown Asbury transforms. The dining scene becomes the city’s stage, each restaurant offering its own take on the town’s personality. Pascal & Sabine sets the mood with candlelit tables, French wine, and dishes that could be served in Paris. A short stroll away, Talula’s hums

with the energy of communal tables, sourdough pizzas drizzled with local honey, and cocktails that balance creativity with fun. On Cookman, Taka brings a sleek, modern take on Japanese cuisine, where sushi rolls, ramen bowls, and craft cocktails draw diners who want something refined yet approachable. Just across town, Porta delivers a warehouse-style party atmosphere with Neapolitan pies, while Kimchi Mama introduces Korean comfort food to the mix with fried chicken that locals swear by.

No Asbury food journey is complete without something sweet. At Milk Sugar Love, ice cream becomes art, with flavors like lemon olive oil and midnight cocoa pushing dessert into the unexpected. For those with a taste for European indulgence, Lola’s offers decadent chocolate gelato alongside perfectly crafted martinis— an elegant nightcap that feels both indulgent and timeless. And if the evening still has life in it, Asbury’s cocktail culture is thriving everywhere, from the swanky lounges of AP Rooftop to cozy local breweries tucked along the side streets. What makes Asbury Park’s food and drink scene so remarkable isn’t just the diversity of its restaurants—it’s the way they mirror the city itself. Just like Asbury blends grit with glamour, the dining here blends comfort with creativity. It’s a place where you can have a Jersey deli sandwich for breakfast, sushi and oysters for lunch, pizza and gelato for dinner, and martinis by night—all within a few blocks of the beach. As Travel + Leisure put it, “Asbury Park delivers both big city culture and small beach town charm.” The food scene is proof of that dual identity—worldly flavors, local pride, and a spirit of reinvention that’s made this Shore town a destination far beyond summer. So come for the music, stay for the ocean—but don’t leave without tasting what truly makes Asbury Park unforgettable.

THEATER ROCKS Asbury Park

THE ASBURY PARK THEATER COMPANY (APTC) IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

Nestled in the heart of a city known for its music and arts, the Asbury Park Theater Company (APTC), a non-profit organization, is bringing the magic of live theater to the Jersey Shore.

The company was founded in 2019 by a passionate group of local theater professionals and theater goers.

From its earliest productions, APTC set a high bar, presenting acclaimed works like Green Day’s "American Idiot," "Million Dollar Quartet," and "Always… Patsy Cline" to sold-out audiences. The company’s shows are known for their high production values, diverse casting, and innovative staging, often rivaling professional regional theaters far beyond the Jersey Shore.

Since then, APTC has become a vibrant cultural force that blends powerful, invigorating performances with transformative theater arts education. The company delivered productions ranging from reimagined classics to bold new works. Every APTC production is designed to spark conversation, celebrate diversity and transport audiences into another world.

APTC’s commitment extends far beyond the stage. Recognizing the profound impact of arts education, the company launched its School of Dramatic Arts, (SODA) offering programs in theater, voice, and movement. Led by seasoned teaching artists who have worked on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and regional stages, the school serves both adults and youth from across the community.

For many students, especially undersourced youth, APTC provides their first real opportunity to experience theater from the inside out. Scholarships supported by grants help ensure that cost is never a barrier. During the summer of 2025, APTC offered classes in sketch comedy and improvisation, musical theater intensives, and fullscale musical productions for students in grades 7–12. The students put on a spectacular show, Disney’s The Lion King Jr. “We see students walk in shy and unsure, and walk out ready to command a stage,” shares William Whitefield. “That transformation is what makes this work so meaningful.

APTC is intentional about producing works that resonate with the diverse cultural fabric of Asbury Park. From the start, the company has chosen plays and musicals that are often lesser known but rich in meaningful stories that invite reflection and conversation. This commitment to inclusivity is reflected not only on stage, but in the company’s broader mission to make theater accessible, affordable, and relevant to everyone.

Local collaboration is central to that mission. APTC partners with area schools, including those in Asbury Park and Neptune Township, to recruit students and offer them meaningful arts experiences. The company has also developed a grassroots partnership with the Jersey Shore Arts Center, Bell Theater at Bell Works and Axelrod Performing Arts Center, expanding its reach and impact.

In 2025, acclaimed musician, producer, and director Anthony D’Amato stepped into the role of Producing Artistic Director. His vision is rooted in both reverence for Asbury Park’s creative legacy and a bold commitment to its future. Outgoing Producing Artistic Director William Whitefield, who helped co-found the company in 2019, echoes that optimism: “After several years of commitment to the community, my time has come to step down. I’m excited to remain on the board and support my friend Anthony, who we all know will bring this company to the next level.”

“Asbury Park is so much more than just its location,” D’Amato said. “It’s a spirit, it’s a brand, it’s an energy. While there is currently no functioning proscenium theater stage in town, we’ve always had a unique, creative community that’s been

acknowledged around the world. We must continue to embrace and inspire those talents, collaborate with those in our county and state, and keep Asbury Park as a recognizable sanctuary for art and artists of all ages and backgrounds.”

D’Amato is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures on the Jersey Shore arts scene, with a national career as a performer, director, and producer. Under his guidance, APTC will launch an energized 2026 season.

“Our board has tremendous confidence in Anthony and his established commitment to the arts community,” says APTC President and co-founder Robert W. Allison. “We look forward to growing our company together.”

D’Amato has built a devoted following as Remember Jones, a powerhouse soul/pop singer-songwriter, bandleader, and showman whose performances are part concert, part theatrical spectacle.

His high-energy, show-band productions have sold out every major venue on the Jersey Shore and taken him to packed clubs and theaters across the country. Along the way, he’s shared the stage with legends including Bruce Springsteen, Dionne Warwick and Darlene Love.

Though he’s made his mark on stages nationwide, D’Amato’s heart has never left Monmouth County. He credits local theater companies for nurturing his passion from a young age.

Offstage, D’Amato’s impact on the community is just as powerful. A passionate philanthropist, he has supported a wide range of organizations including Light of Day, Lunch Break, Fulfill Food Bank, Monmouth Arts, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, he launched a weekly livestream series that highlighted nonprofits in need including Move For Hunger, The Loveland Foundation, and GetUsPPE ultimately raising nearly $25,000 through the support of his fanbase. He continues his mission to uplift others through art and action as a member of the Executive Board of the Light of Day Foundation.

D’Amato has emerged as a source of inspiration for many in the wellness space. Having lost over 200 pounds through dedicated diet and exercise and successfully maintaining that transformation for nearly 15 years he has cultivated a strong, supportive wellness community. Today, he continues to coach, write, and speak publicly, offering guidance and motivation to others on their own health journeys.

Beyond the upcoming productions, D’Amato and the board are collaborating on a new strategic plan, refreshed branding, and expanded programming for both audiences and emerging artists. APTC’s short term goal is to establish a stronger footprint for theater arts in the region. Long term, the company is working toward securing a permanent performance home- a space where high quality theater and innovative educational programs can thrive year round.

The Asbury Park Theater Company has announced its 2025 annual fundraising gala. This spectacular evening, which is slated for December 13 at the Jersey Shore Arts Center, will celebrate the vibrant arts community of Asbury Park, bringing together local stars and beloved Asbury Park favorites for an unforgettable night of entertainment. Guests will be

treated to holiday classics and more, performed live with a sensational 17 piece big band.

Following the resounding success of last year’s sold-out gala, this year’s event promises to be even more dazzling. Proceeds will directly support APTC’s mission to produce world-class theater, nurture local talent, and expand arts education programming throughout the community.

“Our annual gala has become a joyful tradition,” says Jeanne Montano Giannetta board member. “It’s a chance to celebrate the season, showcase our extraordinary local artists, and raise vital funds to support our work year-round.” Community members are encouraged to mark their calendars now and stay tuned for further details.

The Asbury Park Theater Company is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to producing bold, high-quality theatrical productions and providing educational opportunities that inspire, engage, and enrich the community.

JBJ Soul Kitchen Executive Chef Rob Nitti knows his clientele. After prepping a barbecue at JBJ Soul Kitchen in Toms River during a sun-dappled September Saturday afternoon, Nitti, while examining the line of folks waiting to enter the community restaurant, noted that customers would enjoy the delicious food the chefs were preparing and he was correct.

Nitti is an excellent culinary artist who impressed guests with juicy barbecued chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese and potato salad, all served during a special "Summer BBQ Series" held several times between June and September. During regular restaurant service, guests enjoy American Regional cuisine, starting with a choice of soup or salad, followed by an entree such as fish, meat or a vegetarian option and finished with a freshly made dessert or fruit. Many dishes are prepared with natural, locally sourced ingredients, and menus are updated on a bi-weekly basis.

At JBJ Soul Kitchen, it's about combating food insecurity and creating a community where all are welcome and treated with dignity. The JBJ Soul Kitchen serves nutritious three-course meals-including an appetizer, entrée, and dessert, to both paying guests and those facing food insecurity.

JBJ Soul Kitchen seeks to provide healthy, locally sourced food in a warm and welcoming restaurant setting to both in-need and paying customers. The restaurant is a program of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, founded in 2006 to break the cycle of hunger, poverty and homelessness. Since its launch, when Bon Jovi owned the arena football league's Philadelphia Soul, the nonprofit has supported the development of nearly 1,000 units of affordable and supportive housing across 12 states and Washington D.C., reaching thousands of people, including youth and veterans.

JBJ Soul Kitchen is a culinary destination in Toms River and Red Bank but it's much more than about the food. The unique restaurant, which has served 227,502 meals, is a laidback community restaurant. JBJ Soul Kitchen serves paying customers and those in need. It's a way the latter can enjoy a warm three-course meal. Those struggling can learn about volunteering opportunities at JBJ Soul Kitchen.  "We meet people here every day from every walk of life," Community Coordinator Joanne Gwin said. "Some of the people who come in here have everything. Some others are really struggling with financial stress, food, and housing insecurity. Those are the folks we're here for and we're trying to make a difference in their lives. We want to help them get out of their situation."

JBJ Soul Kitchen goes beyond meals and helps those in need with medical issues, documentation, and other critical issues.

JBJ Soul Kitchen Toms River partnered with Fulfill the People's Pantry to create The B.E.A.T. (Bringing Everyone All Together) Center. Guests not only enjoy a meal but are also connected to resources such as housing, education and job support. "You get invested in the people you serve," Nitti said. "There's a guy who I've seen her for three years. He updates me about his life. He told me he got a job at Target, then housing, a car and now even a dog. It's great to see these people get their lives together."

Gwin has been with the Toms River JBJ Soul Kitchen since it opened its doors in 2016. "I started as a volunteer," Gwin said. "I would volunteer Thursday nights, and the Soul Kitchen

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

FROM SPRINGSTEEN’S ASBURY PARK to Prince’s Minneapolis

PRINCE'S "PURPLE RAIN" RESURFACES AS A MUSICAL HEADED FOR BROADWAY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ED CONDRAN
Prince’s Paisley Park

There's a huge music common denominator that connects Asbury Park and Minneapolis. The former has Bruce Springsteen and the latter, Prince. Both have had an incredible impact on the world of music. Each reached the upper echelon courtesy of incredible talent and uncommon work ethic. Unlike the Garden State's larger than life Frank Sinatra and Minnesota's iconic Bob Dylan, both Springsteen and Prince opted to stay home as opposed to leaving for Los Angeles or New York.

Their mutual respect was documented. The Boss paid his respects after Prince's shocking death in 2017. Shortly after Prince passed away Springsteen and the E Street Band were shrouded in purple-tinted lighting as the group honored Prince on stage at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. "Prince forever!," Springsteen said at the conclusion of the intense 7-minute cover. "There's never been any better."

Prince continues to reign. The stage adaptation of Prince's legendary film and album, "Purple Rain," is expected to hit Broadway in 2026. However, music fans don't have to wait for the show to come to the Great White Way.  Folks can catch the pre-Broadway run of "Purple Rain" at Minneapolis' historic State Theatre, which runs through November 16. (https://purplerainbroadway.com)

The play brings to life the electrifying, fictional journey of "The Kid." The protagonist, originally portrayed by Prince, is a troubled but talented fledgling singer-songwriter, that is trying to make it on the Minneapolis club scene. There is plenty of conflict. The Kid has a tumultuous home life, battles a rival band and has an unexpected romance with an emerging singer.

Matt's Bar & Grill, home of the Juicy Lucy
The Veuve Clicquot Chalet at the Westin Edina Galleria

Fans can transport back to 1984 while enjoying the production. While in Minneapolis, the logical next step is visiting Prince's home and studio. Paisley Park, (https://www.paisleypark.com)

Paisley Park isn't in Minneapolis proper, but it's worth the drive to the suburbs. The studio perfectly represents who the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was during his unparalleled career.

The history of Prince is on display during a visit to the 65,000 square-foot facility, where fans learn about Prince the musician and a bit about who the complex person was that decided to remain in his native state when he vaulted into the pop stratosphere.

Guests are privy to Prince's array of costumes, the long coat from "Purple Rain," the aqua suit from Prince's 2007 Super Bowl halftime performance, rare videos and interviews and considerable memorabilia. But it's surprising how small the kitchen where Prince used to hang out to watch his beloved Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Timberwolves and catch film favorites such as the sublime "Some Like It Hot," happens to be.

(https://mattsbar.com). The other option is the Blucy, bleu cheese in the patty.  A Blucy is served at the Blue Door (https://thebdp.com/menu). It's a delicious gut buster. A side order of cheese curds or Nacho Tachos, tater tots, queso, lettuce, tomato, red onion and crema, will make for a memorable meal.

For those who would like to catch a Minnesota Vikings game, the Moxy Minneapolis (https://www. marriott.com/en-us/hotels/mspod-moxy-minneapolis-downtown/) is just a block from U.S. Bank Stadium. The stylish boutique hotel has comfortable rooms and a vibrant bar area with a bubble hockey game, which is free to play.

“Prince is the gateway to a vibrant, diverse city that deserves notice.”

Speaking of kitchens, Minneapolis is full of culinary delights. The Juicy Lucy, a burger with cheese stuffed inside the beef, is the most bandied about sandwich in the "Land of Lakes." Sample the delicacy at Matt's Bar and Grill

Another option is staying in the nearby Minneapolis suburb of Edina, which is a short distance from the Mall of America. The Westin Edina Galleria (https:// www.marriott.com/ en-us/hotels/mspwi-the-westin-edina-galleria/overview/) offers spacious accommodations, a game room and a Winter Village, which will return the last week of November for the sixth consecutive year. The Veuve Clicquot Chalet is a warm, stylish room with floor-to-ceiling windows and features multi-course dinners. The traditional Swiss fondue and Raclette will be offered.

Prince is the gateway to a vibrant, diverse city that deserves notice.
